Untitled (Como se Pone el Canpo por la Noche!), 2023 by Felix R. Cid at Allouch Gallery This is my first encounter with Felix R. Cid, yet his work instantly reminded me of two artists I admire: Eddie Martinez and Marco Pariani. A little research revealed he holds an MFA from Yale—unsurprising given the depth of his craft. His pieces are visually rich and layered, alive with tension yet beautifully balanced amidst the chaos. And though he only has two auction results to date, it’s no shock that both sold well above the high estimates.

Last year, I had the privilege of touring Fernando Botero’s home in Mexico City, guided by his family.

Every wall was adorned with paintings bursting with joy and vibrant character, and from that moment, I became a dedicated fan. One story stood out—how Botero found his iconic style. He once painted a still life of a guitar, and by simply shrinking the soundhole, the instrument took on a dramatically fuller form. Diego Rivera encouraged him to pursue this unique perspective, sparking a creative journey that would define his work.

This painting captures it all: the figurative beauty, the playful still life, and Botero’s unmistakable humor. It’s my top pick from the exhibition.

Halley’s signature fluorescent Day-Glo colors create striking, visually impactful pieces that consistently draw collector interest. Beneath their initial allure, his works reveal a layered, complex commentary on contemporary society.

Featured in major museum collections and exhibited worldwide, his art offers both aesthetic appeal and depth.

On the Stage – Tree Story 1, 2023 by Joonsung Bae at Art Park Another artist who captured my attention at the fair was Joonsung Bae, whose work stands out for its intricate detail and storytelling. A renowned South Korean artist, Bae is known for his innovative blend of painting and photography, though I personally have a soft spot for his oil paintings.

In a world where iconic personas often blur the lines between self-expression and art, Boy George and Johnny Depp have taken their creative flair beyond the familiar stages and screens to find a new canvas—their own. Boy George, known for his kaleidoscopic style and unapologetic authenticity, paints with the same colorful boldness that defines his character, creating portraits that pulsate with life and drama. Depp, meanwhile, with his characteristic stoicism and fondness for the darker corners of celebrity, paints as he acts: with shadows, with mystery, with the unspoken.

Now, Castle Fine Arts is bringing works by these two captivating figures to Art Miami, where they will join an impressive lineup of artists and their originals and one-of-a-kind pieces. It’s a showcase not to be missed.

For Boy George, creativity isn’t just a part of life—it’s the heartbeat of everything he does. His art isn’t confined to a canvas; it’s woven into every facet of his world, a vivid tapestry of punk, rebellion, and selfexpression.

Catapulted to fame at 22, George quickly took his place alongside the cultural mavericks of his generation—Warhol, Basquiat, Haring—who, like him, treated art as a fist shaken in the face of the status quo. And yet, Boy George’s origins were hardly the stuff of avantgarde galleries; expelled for his unapologetically flamboyant style, he found his salvation in art. “In a classroom of thirty, art was the one place where I could indulge my real self,” he notes, perhaps with a wry smile, as he recalls his early sketches of David Bowie, whose audacious aesthetics served as both guide and provocation.

Decades later, George’s face has been immortalized by everyone from Annie Leibovitz to Rankin. But in his own work, he pivots the lens. Through his art, we see Boy George’s worldview—a kaleidoscope of wit, rebellion, and unvarnished human beauty.

It’s an invitation to see, and perhaps even to dare, as he does: in living color.

‘STRENGTH’ 2024, BY JOHNNY DEPP FROM HIS TAROT COLLECTION “Why do you want to fight with something that doesn’t want to fight with you?” is the contemplative message etched into the surface of ‘Strength’, as if spoken by the majestic grey elephant that gazes directly at the viewer.

The text juxtaposed with the traditional symbol of strength invites a deeper reflection of how we use our power.

Johnny Depp “I’ve always needed to escape into a blank piece of paper,” Johnny Depp reflects, describing a lifelong creative impulse that began long before his celebrated career in film. For Depp, art is an essential, a lens through which he explores the world around him with a constant sketchbook in hand, bridging the visual with the poetic.

Through his partnership with Castle Fine Art, Depp has unveiled a series of collections that capture the figures and themes most influential to him. His Friends & Heroes series, featuring icons like Bob Dylan, Elizabeth Taylor, and River Phoenix, reflects a deeply personal approach, each portrait brimming with intimate details that preserve his subjects’ essence. His Tarot series delves into the mystical, exploring archetypal characters with a surrealist

edge that speaks to his fascination with symbolism. Most recently, Bunnyman Genesis introduced Depp’s recurring motif, The Bunnyman, adding a playful, haunting signature to his work.

Known for his transformative roles, Depp’s intuitive eye brings a remarkable authenticity to his portraits, revealing the nuance and depth he’s known for on screen. When his first Friends & Heroes series sold out in hours, Depp was moved: “I tried to capture the spark, the way I see them,” he says of his subjects.

Having kept his art private for years, Depp now welcomes the opportunity to share his visual world. To him, it’s an invitation to experience his view—raw, multilayered, and deeply personal.

aglialatella Galleries is unveiling JETER, a collaboration uniting Major League Baseball, celebrated pop artist Russell Young, and baseball icon Derek Jeter. This is no ordinary sports memorabilia; it’s a bold fusion of athletic legacy and artistic flair, highlighted by monumental portraits of Jeter in action. Titled The Jump and The Swing, the pieces were hand-selected by Jeter and Young to blend high art with the spirit of the game.

Jeter, of course, needs no introduction. Five World Series rings, a spot in the Hall of Fame, and that rare capacity to embody both grace and grit. But it’s his off-field pursuits that lend a certain gravitas to this collaboration. Through his Turn 2 Foundation, he has fashioned himself as a champion for youth

Helena, you’re widely recognized for your modeling career but have also gained extensive experience in the editorial and photography realms. Camilla, as an artist and designer, you’ve explored various industries through your work. Could you both share what defines your creative journeys and your ongoing collaborations?

HELENA: I was a photographer before I modeled, and that’s what I

initially wanted to do as a job, but via the modeling business, I ended up doing so many different jobs—photography, design, and interior. I have learned so much and absorbed so much knowledge from everyone I’ve worked with, all on a creative and technical level. I was in the best photography school but also had the best fashion design teachers, and I’ve learned about history, cultures, architecture, furniture design, and art in so many forms. This is where Camilla and I cross over, our mutual love for and curiosity about art, music, design, interiors, and architecture.

When you share a mutual love for all those topics, you get excited about creating together.

CAMILLA: I grew up immersed in the Danish furniture industry, with a mother who was also a horse breeder, shaping a unique blend of influences that guided my creative journey. While I pursued a path in fashion, launching my brand STÆRK with my thesis collection in London, I always knew my work would come full circle to incorporate my heritage, including elements like interiors, furniture, sculpture, and architecture. This formed an ever-evolving aesthetic universe driven by storytelling. Short films have always been a critical medium for expressing my abstract ideas and bringing my narratives to life. My work is deeply inspired by the saddles of my horseback-riding youth, the sharp surrealism of David Lynch, and the haunting glamour of old Hollywood and film noir. Helena and I share a passion for drawing inspiration from everything around us, letting it seep into our inner worlds. From the moment we met, we had a strong, unspoken creative communication—a rare and special bond that continues to inspire our work together.

You first connected during a Nylon magazine shoot, and ever since, you’ve collaborated on various projects, even establishing a studio together in New York. The studio’s artistic influences span from Danish design heritage to gothic elements and the allure of Old Hollywood. Could you share more about how you crafted such a unique style that blends these cultural influences? What are the key elements you aim to communicate through your work?

C: Our collaboration under Stærk&Christensen represents a shared

aesthetic universe where our creative expressions converge. It is shaped by the influences that have always inspired us in our individual work and by memories from our Danish upbringings. And on Helena’s part, her mom is Peruvian too. Both of us left Denmark at a young age and have been influenced by adapting to and drawing inspiration from multiple cultures, still holding onto our roots. While our respective work and styles are quite different, there is common ground that we knew we needed to explore further.

As a small, women-led studio in the creative industry, how do you view your role and your work within the broader dialogue surrounding women’s empowerment?

H: We follow our hearts, minds, and passions. This is our personal

empowerment, and hopefully, through our creations, we are able to convey the quiet strength that we wish for women everywhere to experience for themselves. Women are as powerful in their quiet, wise calmness as they are in their loud, collective, and rightful fight for equality.

You describe In My Dream Last Night... as a “visual journey of your long-standing friendship and creative bond”. What compelled you to create a book on this topic?

H: Exactly that; our friendship and deep bond are something worth

celebrating and honoring. We are very grateful for this friendship and love the idea of a visual manifestation of it.

What do you hope readers will take away from being invited into your shared journey?

H: Rather than readers, we consider them viewers, as this is a visual book.

If the photographs and film stills can capture the creative bond between us and spark curiosity or even awaken old memories in the viewers, that would be the greatest reward we could hope to achieve from this book.

Where does the title In My Dream Last Night... come from?

C: In My Dream Last Night... is the armature behind our ongoing short

film and sound concept. We collaborate with friends who are artists from various fields and who continuously inspire us. The film pieces and the process of making them are a celebration of our pure love for creating, of friendships, and of the spirit of collaboration. Each piece is an intimate moment—surreal, raw, and as personal as the dream wants to take it.

In dreams, we can be free from boundaries and the fear of being vulnerable.

Each piece is a co-interpretation of the subject’s dream, envisioned through the spectrum of any or all of these dual installations: darkness lightness, poetic - erotic, love - solitude.

What was different and exciting about the process of creating a book?

C: The goal of capturing the essence of our short films without using

moving images was a wonderful challenge. The snapshots from our films and our photography throughout the years also narrate the story of a friendship that was forged through visual creation.

We strived to convey this narrative through images and snippets, using minimal text so as not to detract from the opportunity to inspire new aspirations and surreal moments for the audience.

We hope our book can serve as an invitation to explore emotions, memories, fantasies, and dreams.

What is next?

C & H: ‘In My Dream Last Night...’ is an ongoing cinematic journey

for us, constantly evolving and expanding. But we are focused on an architectural project that has been in the works for over three years. Stay tuned for more.

I

t’s quite an awe-inspiring thought, really. It takes a single wine vine and a lot of oenological serendipity to produce a bottle of 2011 Château Angélus Premier Grand Cru Classé “A,” one of the crown jewels of the Saint-Émilion appellation in France. To savor the liquid velvet I’m about to gobble at Logis de la Cadène—the culinary/hospitality gem owned by the de Boüard-Rivoal family, who also owns Château Angélus— much had to align with Bacchus’ plan to keep us jolly with viticultural bliss.

Whatever pours from that bottle has weathered many of Mother Nature’s caprices. Sudden rainstorms can stress the vines, disrupting the delicate dance of sugar and acidity. Too much water can drown the soil, choking the roots of oxygen.

And then there’s the searing heat, ripening the grapes too quickly, risking a less-than-stellar vintage. This resilient nectar, shepherded by an army of devoted “vine whisperers” who guide it through nature’s whims, lies at the heart of the Château Angélus universe. Thanks to the leadership of its CEO, Stéphanie de Boüard-Rivoal, that universe is expanding.

First, a little background on Château Angélus. It’s more than just a vineyard, it’s a family-owned legacy steeped in centuries of history and prestige. Since the late 1700s, this storied estate has been passed down through eight generations of the de Boüard family, each carefully nurturing its viticultural heritage. With a reputation for wines that blend refinement and character, Château Angélus has become synonymous with excellence. Its vineyards, rooted in a mix of clay and limestone, produce full-bodied wines with a complex flavor profile, typically featuring a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon. These blends are known for their deep, velvety textures, layered fruit notes, and hints of spice, tobacco, and earthy undertones. As they age, the wines develop even greater complexity, with silky tannins and a long, refined finish holding a coveted place in the world of luxury wine collections.

In a move that embodies the spirit of reinvention, Stéphanie ushered Château Angélus into a new era with a series of bold decisions making it a full circle moment.

“From when I was quite young, seven years old precisely, I knew I would take over at Château Angelus one day,” she explains. “But, I also understood it would be helpful to gain a diversity of experience before attempting to realize this dream of mine. I led a successful career in London, working in financial services, and looking back I can even more clearly appreciate how much this time helped build my ability to recognize and capitalize on opportunities.” One of those opportunities was withdrawing from the SaintÉmilion classification system—a defiant statement that the estate’s prestige no longer hinges on outdated rankings, but on its own reputation.

Her vision materialized in the construction of a cutting-edge winery, where form and function coexist in harmony supported by sustainable ethos. Stéphanie also expanded the luxury footprint by acquiring hotels and restaurants, an ecosystem where wine isn’t just tasted— it’s lived. “Our venture into hospitality was initially about seizing opportunities,” explains Stéphanie. “Although we came to see it as a wonderful new avenue for growth and an opportunity for refining our approach in wine.” Nowhere is that more palpable than at Logis de la Cadène, the Michelin-starred culinary jewel in the heart of Saint-Émilion, led by Chef Thibaut Gamba, who gives the local bounty a rich international edge. Gamba’s creative genius finds its muse in the local terroir of Château Angélus, which supplies the freshest produce from its own farms, including a fungi farm run by two men who dazzled me with their dedication and knowledge during my visit at their underground mycological terrarium. The footprint of Gamba’s stints at top kitchens such as Pierre Gagnaire in Paris and Per Se in New York is felt on

every plate, while the impressive savoir-faire is exercised to perfection by his team. “The owners of Château Angelus are true epicureans,” Gamba explains to me. “I immediately aligned with their approach and values. The most important things in my job are pleasure, generosity, and sharing—and on that we are completely on the same page!”

This shared passion extends naturally to the hotel itself, a chic spin on French elegance and modern comfort. Each room is thoughtfully designed, offering guests a serene retreat with luxurious touches such as plush bedding, top-notch amenities, and views of the vineyards and the charming medieval streets. The property I checked into, was mine for the taking, with its sumptuous wood paneling and serene tones—a space available for those who crave exclusivity. And there I was, playing the part of the lady of the house, indulging in the fantasy of owning it all, if only for a brief moment.

As my visit drew to a close I couldn’t help but feel I had been part of something important. It was a full immersion into the universe Stéphanie has masterfully curated. In that moment, surrounded by the quiet sophistication of SaintÉmilion, I realized this was more than just a destination—it was a state of mind, a place where time slows, and life, like the wine, is savored to the very last drop.

Alberto Checa’s latest artistic offering, fresh from his solo exhibition at Emerson Dorsch, is a masterclass in layered references, offering a dialogue between past works and a surprising nod to the iconic Celia Cruz.

It was Jean Chung, the curator behind a two-person project at Laundromat Space, who first introduced audiences to Checa’s practice. In that show, and in other collaborative performances with fellow artist Diego Gabaldon, Checa delved into the complexities of masculinity, showcasing both artists’ ability to unpack multifaceted themes with finesse.

At the heart of Checa’s installations is a profound meditation on labor—particularly the often-overlooked forces that fuel Miami. “Whose labor powers this city?” is a question central to his work. His DIY aesthetic is a reflection of the city’s immigrant spirit, heavily influenced by the Cuban diaspora, who have long been navigating spaces of scarcity.

Through his thoughtful creations, Checa captures the raw ingenuity of a community accustomed to making much from little. The work stands as a testament to the city’s quiet laborers, those who build, create, and thrive with minimal resources, showcasing Miami’s vibrant creativity at its core.

“With an impressive array of accolades to his name, Novoa is an artist who never fails to captivate my attention,” says Galpin. Known for his visionary work that fuses the futuristic with the fantastical— drawing equally from his travels and boundless imagination—Novoa wrestles with concepts of time and truth in ways that leave an indelible mark. His presence in prominent museum group shows, from Madrid’s Museo Reina Sofia to New York’s Bronx Museum, only cements his status as one of the most forward-thinking minds in our cultural sphere. “I deeply admire his dedication to nurturing knowledge, supporting fellow artists, attending openings, and always offering incisive critiques,” Galpin adds. Novoa is currently engrossed in a groundbreaking research project in collaboration with the illustrious [NAME] Publications, Inc.

GeoVanna Gonzalez “If you’re searching for incredible, thought-provoking artists, the best tip is always to ask other artists,” Galpin muses. Several years later, her intuition was right. “I’ve quietly watched GeoVanna’s practice evolve since that recommendation, and it’s been nothing short of captivating.”

One project in particular, Gonzalez’s 2021 installation at Locust Projects, remains vivid in Galpin’s memory. “The environment she created, paired with the performance and film documentation, is seared into my mind,” she recalls. So when she discovered that curator Isabela Villanueva had enlisted Gonzalez for a new project, Galpin was thrilled.

This Miami Art Week, art aficionados can experience Gonzalez’s latest work, Flowing Pathways, at the Third Street Entrance of Miami Dade College’s Wolfson Campus. With a show currently at MCA Denver and a forthcoming project at the Hammer Museum, Gonzalez’s career trajectory is unmistakably upward. Scholars have also taken notice—her work is featured in Nuyorican and Diasporican Visual Art: A Critical Anthology, published by Duke University Press, where Teréz Iacovino analyzes her piece PLAY, LAY, AYE in a chapter that dives deep into diasporic art.

Homecoming, the new exhibition

by Jose Parla taking place at the Pérez Art Museum this fall, not only describes the New York artist’s return to his native Miami; it also represents his comeback to his life and practice.

In 2021, Parla contracted a life-threatening case of COVID-19 that Return to Miami's left him in a four-month coma during which Ancestral Circle, 2024 he suffered a stroke and severe brain bleeding. While he miraculously survived, the recovery was an arduous process during which he questioned whether he would ever paint again. Once he did, it was with a completely different perspective.

“I feel a deep sense of gratitude these days,” says Parla. “Having gone through such a challenging period, I’m more aware of my body, my mind, and the delicate balance we exist in. There’s a renewed sense of purpose in my work, and I feel compelled to pour everything I’ve experienced into the pieces I’m creating now.”

That life-changing energy is palpable in the works that make up the exhibition—larger-than-life canvases bursting with color and texture. “These paintings are raw and filled with the intensity of survival,” says Parla. “Each one is a record of the time I spent confronting my own fragility, and yet, they’re also filled with resilience.”

To reflect the complexity of emotions he went through, Parla relied on the process of layering ink, paint, and plaster to produce the works, which are inevitably defined by their tactile qualities.

“It’s as if you can feel the breath, the heartbeat, and the struggle within the works,” he says. “It’s about the layers of life, the scars we carry, but also the beauty that emerges from it.”

Homecoming will be an elaborate, two-part exhibition that leans heavily into the immersive. In the first part, visitors will be able to observe Parla’s dance-like technique as he paints a site-specific mural, which he reveals will be “an homage to the region of Miami, Cuba, the Caribbean, and Latin America, but also to the idea of rebuilding and reimagining.” The second part of the show will be presented in a gallery converted to look like Parla’s studio, complete with paint-covered tables and the artist’s records collection.

“I wanted viewers to step into the works, not just observe them from a distance,” says Parla.

“When you surround someone with the textures, colors, and scale of a piece, it becomes a physical experience. You feel the weight of time, the depth of history. In that space, the viewer can become a part of the narrative, engaging with the work in a more intimate and visceral way. avid Benavidez, a Phoenix native and two-time undefeated world champion boxer, has dedicated much of his life to mastering the art of boxing. Familiarly known as the “Mexican Monster” for his formidable fighting style, Benavidez became the youngest 168-pound World Champion in boxing history at just 20 years old. While his life remains deeply rooted in the sport, it is Miami that has now captured his heart. Together with his wife, Karina Silva—a successful entrepreneur—the couple has embraced a new chapter in the vibrant Brickell area.

“We came to Miami without intending to stay,” Karina shares. Initially, David split his training time between Seattle and Miami, having already owned a condo in the area. Yet, a family visit to the city’s dynamic culture and community changed everything. “We were here for about three months, and then we thought, ‘Why go back?’” David recalls. It was realtor Giovanna M. Fernandez of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices EWM Realty in Coral Gables who secured their stunning penthouse, a move that seemed destined given Fernandez’s elite status as a Diamond Chairman’s Club member, Top 1%, and Luxury Collection Specialist at Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices EWM Realty.

Since their February 2024 move, the transition has been remarkably smooth.

David appreciates Brickell’s family-friendly atmosphere, where he finds peace knowing his wife and children are safe. “It’s more family-oriented here, a beautiful area where everything is within walking distance,” he notes.

Both David and Karina’s business ventures have flourished since the move.

Karina oversees two thriving businesses in Washington state—Dress in Love, a chic clothing boutique in Seattle’s Westfield Southcenter Mall, and Botanica Beauty Studio, a medspa in Bellevue—all while balancing life as a mother of two.

Despite the distance, she successfully manages both remotely from their new Miami home.

David’s entrepreneurial ambitions are also expanding. In January 2025, following his anticipated championship fight in Las Vegas, he plans to launch EZBachi Japanese Grill, a gourmet food truck in downtown Miami. A franchise of a Phoenix-based brand, EZBachi will serve high-end hibachi dishes such as lobster plates and filet mignon bowls. “I’m excited about the business opportunities here,” says David. “Miami is a booming market, and we see so much potential.”

Their shared Mexican heritage also enhances their connection to the city.

“We love the strong Latino presence here,” David says. “But what’s even more incredible is the mix of cultures from around the world—it’s truly unique.”

Though they miss their West Coast family, the couple feels at home in Miami.

Their children enjoy outdoor living, especially in the sun-drenched pool, and they’ve quickly integrated into the community, including at BOXR Gym, where David trains. “We’ve made wonderful friends here,” says Karina. “We’re really starting to settle in.”

David’s three-year-old son, Anthony, is already following in his father’s footsteps. With an Instagram following at @babyanthonybenavidez, the toddler loves to showcase his punch combinations after his father’s matches. “He’s been throwing punches since he was six months old,” David says proudly. Boxing runs deep in the family—David’s father, José Benavidez Sr., trained him and his brother, José Benavidez Jr. In fact, José Jr. made his acting debut in 2023, portraying Felix Chavez in Creed III, further solidifying the family’s prominence.

Should Benavidez secure victory in his upcoming fight against David Morrell Jr. in Las Vegas, he will become the light heavyweight world champion by next year. “Our dream is to continue building successful businesses,” David shares. For this power couple, Miami is not just a city—it’s the foundation for their next chapter of joy and growth.

ver the course of his decades-long career, designer Uli Petzold’s mission has been the same: To make other people look and feel good. Born in Frankfurt and raised in Berlin, he started working in fashion—furs in particular—before moving to work as a freelance designer in Montreal, New York, South Korea, and Paris, where he designed products, packaging, accessories, and showrooms for major companies like Balenciaga and Mercedes Benz until a colleague convinced him to move to back to the U.S. and settle in Miami in 1997.

“I was married by then with three young children—and Miami’s low-key, sunny environs seemed hospitable for a growing family,” says Petzold. So he took a leap, purchased a home in the Sunset Islands, and started fresh. “It wasn’t exactly an easy start,” admits the designer. “The kids hardly spoke English and we knew almost no one.”

Before long, though, a random meeting with tech entrepreneur Peter Loftin changed his trajectory. “He had just purchased Gianni Versace’s mansion on Ocean Drive with plans to turn the estate into a luxury hotel and asked me if I could help to illuminate it,” recalls Petzold. “By doing so I became known virtually overnight as a lighting guru.” Over the years that followed, he steadily built his reputation in the field—working with world-class architects like Norman Foster, Zaha Hadid, and Arquitectonica and lighting the homes of high-profile clients like baseball star Alex Rodriguez and Puerto Rican singer Luis Fonsi as well as luxury condominium buildings, retail shops, restaurants, and hotels across the country from Miami and L.A. to New York and the Hamptons.

Much of his success springs from his philosophy that good lighting should be subconsciously sensed rather than seen. By minimizing the light sources and integrating them into the architecture, he brings out the best in what he’s illuminating—be it people, food, interiors, or cars (as he did for his first lighting project in a showroom for Mercedes Benz).“ We

want people to walk into the rooms we illuminate and feel crazy comfortable without knowing why,” says Petzold.
