President and C.E.O M-Trex Networks.

MBE: Mori can you please speak briefly about your background and your family? MORI: I have three daughters and a wife. I always joke around that the large volume of travelling I do is because I have to come home to four women and I’m usually in the way. I take a lot of pleasure in spending time with my family. I have been very involved with my daughter’s as their soccer coach. They have all played since they were young children and since they have been playing I have been their coach. As a family we are also very involved in cycling and still spend time cycling together. I started my education in architecture but quickly realized due to the recession that was going on in Canada at the time that I had to change my focus towards business and not architecture. As soon as I graduated I joined Bell and worked there for the next 18 years. I left Bell as Senior Vice President and moved to Rogers. MBE: Could you please start off by giving us a brief introduction about your company and what it does? MORI: We at M-Trex are a wireless company. We connect directly to the large carriers and take their networks and bring it into our secure network. We deal with any kind of machine that requires wireless data such as ATM’s and GPS machines. We do that in Canada, the US, Europe and South America. We are based out of Mississauga where are head office is and have offices in all the cities where we are located. My background has always been in telecommunication, I spent 18 years at Bell and a further 8 years in Rogers.

While I was at Rogers I saw the opportunity to get involved in Machine to Machine, which is a part of the wireless industry. With the help of Rogers as my first partner I was able to start M-Trex in 2008. MBE: What is main line of products offered by your company? MORI: Our products are very few because we try to focus on network connections. An example of one of the products we have developed is a wireless router people can use for devices such as ATM’s and Kiosks. But even this wireless router we developed was made for the purpose of driving network connections. Along with routers we also have modems and personal Wi-Fi routers. MBE: How was your experience working with the giants of the telecommunication industry such as Rogers and Bell? MORI: Rogers has been a good partner for my company. The thing about companies such as Rogers, Bell and Telus is that because they are such large companies sometimes they were the best of partners but at the same time they were also my biggest competitors. Overall we do have a very positive relationship with these companies and they continue to support us at M-Trex. MBE: At Rogers you had a chance to work with Ted Rogers can you please shed some light on that experience. MORI: Working with the man was great and he was everything you have ever read about him. He had vision that very few people had. At the time I was very well

settled at Bell but the major motivation for me to move to Rogers was a personal phone call I got from Ted Rogers inviting me to join Rogers. It was an offer from a man I could not refuse. MBE: Do you think there will come a point where do you not need the help and support of these large companies. MORI: No because the relationship we have with these companies is a symbiotic relationship where we are using their help as far as infrastructure. The only way I would be able to work without their help is if made a very large investment and made my own infrastructure but that is not feasible. MBE: Mori can you please comment on the fact that technology is always changing in a rapid pace and this brings about challenges especially in the industry both your company and our company are involved in?

The same project would most likely have not been feasible a couple of years back. We at M-Trex are also now able to cater to companies that do not require so much data. For example some of our clients in Europe are only using 15 Kilobytes a month. Whilst some companies would not be able to provide them service due to their low volume, we at M-Trex are able to cater to them. Overall as technology changes we make sure that our networks are up to date and secure and cannot be compromised. MBE: Do you see any future challenges that your company would not be able to keep up with or not be able to tackle such as the emergence of new companies and competitors?

MORI: Technology is changing very rapidly so what we at M-Trex try to do to counter this is we try to focus purely on the network side of things. We focus all our efforts into making sure these networks can function securely and efficiently with the new technology.

MORI: I do see these kinds of challenges in the industry but I feel as if these challenges usually affect a particular country instead of a global market. Newer competitors are always entering the market and this can have a positive impact also. As long as there is a good balance between these companies and the market there is more than enough business out there and it should not be a problem.

As an example a big change that came recently was the cost of data which has gone down rapidly in the last couple of years. A couple of years ago using around three gigabyte of data a month would be very expensive. Now because the cost of data has gone down we have been able to venture into new projects such as the one we just worked on in New York. The government in New York has been it mandatory for all taxis to have cameras in them and these cameras send lots of gigabytes of data back to the network. Because it is feasible in this day and age we were able to successfully complete this project.

MORI: I believe the MBBP program is a wonderful program because we all need to have business relationships in our daily lives. MBBP is a good way to create these business connections and this is especially for the younger people who are just finishing university who have a future of business relationships ahead of them. This program helps these kinds of people come together and grow together with other companies in a mutually beneficial way.

MBE: To finish off can you please give a message to our readers and members of our program.

Designating Beneficiaries

by Colleen Hoch Hauser, Money Mentors While nobody likes to talk about it, Estate planning is an important part of every financial plan to decide what happens with our assets after we pass away. As a part of this planning, you will need to designate your beneficiaries – that is, choose who you leave your assets such as funds, income or payment from an investment, retirement pension or savings plan, insurance policy, property or other assets. ...................................................................................................................................................................

A beneficiary can be a person, estate or entity, although the most common are spouses/common-law partners, children, relatives, friends, and charities. You can name one person or several loved ones to share the proceeds. Be specific as whoever you choose will receive all or portions of your assets when you're gone. Most retirement plans annuities and life insurance policies let you designate beneficiaries providing you the final say over who receives your death benefit. Some policies allow you to name a contingent beneficiary as the second in line to inherit assets, should the primary beneficiary not be alive to collect the assets. For example, a wife names her husband as the primary beneficiary on her life insurance policy and names her adult son as her contingent beneficiary. If the husband and wife die at the same time, or the husband dies before his wife, the son would receive the funds from his mother’s insurance policy. Carefully consider your options before choosing your heirs, as beneficiary designations allow assets to pass outside of your estate and avoid probate. Consider the needs of your spouse, children with special needs, minor children and aging parents. If you name minor children as beneficiaries, you will also need to name a trustee until those children reach legal age. Communicate your wishes clearly. After you decide, we recommend informing your spouse, other beneficiaries, your executor and other family members. Remember, these assets do not necessarily go to the same person you have named in your Will. Make sure your beneficiary arrangements are up to date at all times.

CHECK YOUR CURRENT BENEFICIARIES. HAVE YOU NAMED THEM WHERE POSSIBLE? Ensure that’s what you want, as you may have changed your mind. With most policies, you can change your beneficiary at any time by completing a “Change of Designation” form. If you fail to name beneficiaries within your assets, they will become part of your probate estate and pass under your Will. Update changes in personal circumstances like births, weddings, divorce, death. Consult a tax professional/specialist/accountant and/or a financial advisor, regarding implications to your individual situations. Life insurance is free of income tax to beneficiaries, but faces probate fees if the benefits become part of the Estate. Avoid naming your Estate as a beneficiary of your life insurance, for this reason. Segregated funds issued by insurance companies allow a beneficiary designation. Registered Retirement Savings Plans (RRSPs), Registered Retirement Income Funds (RRIFs), Locked-In Retirement Account (LIRA), Life Income Funds (LIF), and Locked-In Retirement Income Funds (LRIF) allow a beneficiary designation. Generally, your spouse must be named as beneficiary on your pension plans and locked-in plans consistent with pension legislation. Tax Free Savings Accounts (TFSA) can designate a beneficiary. If a spouse is named, the amount can be added to the survivor’s TFSA without affecting contribution room. Other beneficiaries receive the money outside their TFSA. Name a contingent beneficiary where possible in case the primary beneficiary dies before you. Review and update your beneficiary designations annually; I do mine at tax time.

When an individual dies without a will in ontario, the surviving spouse is entitled to the first $200,000 of the value of the estate. The remainder of the estate will be distributed as follows: 1. If the deceased had no descendants, the surviving spouse Will receive the remainder of the estate; 2. If the deceased had one child (or descend ants of a deceased child), one half will go to the surviving spouse and one half will go to the child (or their descendants); or 3. If there is a surviving spouse and more than one child (or descendants of a deceased child), one-third will go to the surviving spouse and the remaining two third will be divided between the deceased's children (or their descendants per stirpes if a child is deceased).

If a spouse has already received some property under a will, that amount will be deducted from the amount they would be entitled to under the division set out above. For these purposes, “SPOUSE strictly means a married spouse, and does not include a common-law partner.

In Ontario, where two people die simultaneously, they are deemed to have survived each other. Jointly held property is deemed to be held as tenants in common. For an insurance policy, unless the contract provides otherwise, where a person insured, or a group person insured, and a beneficiary die at the same time or in circumstances rendering it uncertain which of them survived the other, the insurance money is payable as if the beneficiary had predeceased the person insured or group person insured.

A surviving spouse may apply for a division of family property, or “equalization payment”, within six months of the date of death (see section 17.4.9 of chapter 17, “Family Property”, for a discussion as to which types of assets are considered family property in Ontario). if the spouse makes such an application, they will not receive anything under the will, or any distribution in the case of an intestacy. One-half of the value of a jointly owned property will be included in the assets of the deceased person when determining the amount of the equalization payment. However, this can be problematic as the asset itself has now been transferred to the survivor, and therefore will not be available to satisfy a family property equalization payment. The proceeds of any insurance policy or lump sum payments under a pension plan owned by the deceased and paid to the surviving spouse

will offset any equalization payment owing to that person. In fact, if there is an excess, the personal representative is allowed to recover it for the estate. Common-law partners do not have the right to apply for an equalization payment upon relationship breakdown. However, a surviving common-law partner may be able to make an unjust enrichment claim. In the event of death, the non-owning spouse only has a right to retain possession of the family home for 60 days after the spouse’s death. If a spouse dies owning an interest in a family home as a joint tenant with a third person and not with the other spouse, the joint tenancy will be deemed to have been severed immediately before the time of death. This means that the deceased’s interest will form part of his or her estate.

s will be entitled to al du vi di in g in w llo fo e In Ontario, th ey were financially th if te ta es e th t ns ai make a claim ag ath: ceased at the time of de de e th on up t en nd pe de

1. A spouse (which could include a former spouse); 2. Acommon-law partner, where the couple had cohabited together in a conjugal relationship continuously for at least three years; 3. A child, including, a step-child or grandchild; 4. A parent, including a step-parent or grandparent; and 5. A sibling.

For the purposes of making a dependant’s relief order, the court will consider certain assets to be part of the estate, even though those assets did not form part of the estate for probate purposes. These assets will include: 1. Gifts made on the deceased’s death bed; 2. Money (and interest), in an account in the name of the deceased in trust for another; 3. Joint bank accounts held by the deceased and a third party; 4. Any other disposition of property made by a deceased whereby property is held at the date of his or her death by the deceased and anoth er as joint tenants; 5. Any disposition of property made by the deceased in trust or otherwise, [0 the extent that the deceased at the date of his or her death retained a power to revoke such disposi-

tion, or a power to consume or dispose of the principal (but this clause does not affect the right of any income beneficiary to the income accrued and undistributed at the date of the death of the deceased); 6. Proceeds of any insurance policies effected on the life of the deceased and owned by him or her, notwithstanding that these proceeds are payable to a designated beneficiary; 7. Any amount payable on the death of the deceased under a policy of group insurance; and 8. Any amount payable under a designation of a beneficiary.

Therefore, if the deceased leaves a spouse who was financially dependent upon him or her, and the deceased had an insurance policy or an RRSP plan that was payable to children from a previous marriage, it is possible that the spouse Could make a claim against those assets.

With jointly held property, the value to the estate will be the amount of the deceased’s interest in the property. A dependant’s relief application must be made within six months from the date on which letters probate or letters of administration are granted.

In Canada’s economy there’sAlberta, and there’s everywhere else

erbate the regional split,” Benjamin Reitzes, a senior economist at BMO Capital Markets in Toronto, said in a telephone interview. Alberta’s growing power is doing more than putting energy ahead of manufacturing exports such as Ontario’s cars and Quebec’s aircraft. It’s drawing tens of thousands of young people to the province, seeking energy jobs with some of the country’s highest salaries. The oil- and gas-rich western province was responsible for all of the country’s net employment growth over the past 12 months, adding 81,800 jobs while the rest of Canada lost 9,500. Alberta’s tradesurplus, C$7.4 billion ($6.9 billion) in May, almost matched the deficitrung up everywhere else. If growth trends over the past decade continue, Alberta would pass Quebec to become the country’s second-largest provincial economy in three years, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. “Alberta is already by far the strongest province economically, and higher oil prices will only exac-

It’s also posing a challenge to policy makers: Oil wealth has led to a stronger Canadian dollar, squeezing Ontario and Quebec manufacturers. Canada’s central bank is keeping interest rates near historic lows, looking for a weaker currency to boost exports. “We see a two-track economy,” Bank of Canada Governor Stephen Poloz said at aJuly 16 press conference after his decision to extend the longest interest-rate pause since the 1950s. Canada’s non-energy exports have disappointed, he said, holding back growth. At the same time, “energy exports have indeed been quite strong and we expect that to be a continuing trend.”

bitumen to the Pacific Coast, opening access to Asian markets and reducing Canada’s reliance on the U.S. for its crude exports. Producers are also waiting for President Barack Obama’s delayed review of TransCanada Corp.’s Keystone XL pipeline, which would bring Alberta oil to U.S. Gulf Coast refineries.

Manufacturing has been at the heart of Canada’s economy and government policy for decades, marked by a 1965 pact to establish a single market for autos between the U.S. and Canada, and a 1988 free trade agreement to wipe out tariffs on goods traded by the two nations, later expanded to include Mexico.

Even without those conduits, Alberta’s oil is powering growth. Calgary-based Canadian Pacific Railway Ltd. (CP) shares have returned 61 percent in the past year, compared with 24 percent for the benchmark Standard & Poor’s/TSX Composite Index, as the company benefits from increasing shipments of oil by rail.

Today Prime Minister Stephen Harper, who represents a Calgary district in Parliament, says the world’s 11th-largest economy may see C$650 billion of resource projects over the next decade, such as Enbridge Inc.’s C$6.5 billion Northern Gateway pipeline, which won conditional approval last month. The project would take Alberta

“Continued expansion of oil and gas production has resulted in increased revenues,” Chief Operating Officer Keith Creel said on a July 17 earnings call. “Looking at the balance of 2014, we see strong fundamentals on the demand side.”

The unbalanced nature of the economy is reflected in the construction of Calgary skyscrapers, like Encana Corp.’s headquarters. It can also be seen in economic statistics. Alberta has been “effectively the lone driver” of recent housing starts, spurred by population growth that’s the highest in more than three decades, Bank of Montreal estimates. The province’s per capita gross domestic product will reach C$88,000 next year, C$35,000 more than the rest of Canada, Toronto-Dominion Bank economists predict.

“Alberta will lead all other provinces as many sectors of the economy are performing well,” Arlene Kish, senior economist at Lexington, Massachusetts-based consulting firm IHS Global Insight, wrote in a July 16 report. Economic growth rates of 3.4 percent this year and 3.0 percent next year will be the strongest in Canada, she forecasts.

Manpowergroup Inc. is a Milwaukee-based employment-services firm. Alberta’s labor market has gone “from a very tight unemployment rate to an extremely acute, critical point,” Luft said through a telephonic Interview. “They are really sitting at zero unemployment.” Alberta’s jobless rate was 4.9 percent in June and has averaged 5.4 percent over the last five years. That compares with Canada’s 7.1 percent rate in June, and five-year average of 7.5 percent. “When you live in Alberta you have a sense of job security and of choice,” said Byrne Luft, vice president of operations for Manpower Canada in Toronto, who was raised in Edmonton and Calgary.

More people moved to Alberta from other provinces than to any other area -- about 27,700 in 2011-12, the latest year available -- according to federal statistics agency. Since records began in 1976-77, Alberta has brought in a net 483,600 people from the rest of the country, while Quebec saw an outflow of 465,400 people over that period. Ontario saw a net inflow of 63,200 people, about 13 percent of Alberta’s total.

ciation of Petroleum Producers. The value of exports of crude oil derived from bitumen has almost doubled to C$81.7 billion in 2013 from C$42.8 billion in 2009, according to Statistics Canada data. That’s helped the province turn a deficit, forecast at C$2 billion for the year ended March 31, into a C$755 million surplus. Alberta’s coffers are being filled by oil royalties, with output from the province’s oil sands set to more than double to 4.1 million barrels a day by 2025 from 2013, according to the Canadian Asso-

In Ontario, Finance Minister Charles Sousa’s plan to take until the 2017-18 fiscal year to eliminate its C$12.5 billion deficit led Moody’s Investors Service to cut the outlook on the province’s Aa2-rated debt to negative on July 2.

Ontario has been hurt by cutbacks at automakers such General Motors Co. and weakness at smartphone maker BlackBerry Ltd. Quebec has struggled with with Montreal-based Bombardier Inc. seeing delays with its new CSeries jet and lumber and paper mills closing. Alberta’s bonds due in seven to 10 years yielded 2.63 percent on July 21, compared with 2.79 percent for similar-maturity Ontario debt, according to Bank of America Corp. data. Alberta pays 60 basis points above comparable federal debt to borrow money for seven to 10 years, the lowest spread among Canada’s 10 provinces, the data show. Investors demand 80 basis points from Ontario and 81 basis points from Quebec to hold debt of that maturity.

To be sure, Canada’s economy still benefits from a broad array of commodity exports and is underpinned by the world’s safest banks headquartered in Toronto. “Canada is becoming a tale of two cities, Toronto and Calgary,” said Jack Mintz of the University of Calgary’s School of Public Policy, who used to teach at University of Toronto. “I don’t think growth in Alberta means other places are worse off,” he said. Ontario has lost manufacturing competitiveness toChina, the U.S. and Mexico.

Prosperity

List

Calgary rated higher than Toronto in a review of prosperity across 24 global cities conducted by the Toronto Region Board of Trade. Calgary was second on superior growth for income and jobs, along with lower taxes, and Toronto was in third place. Paris topped the list. Alberta’s rise both marks a revolution for Canada’s economy as well as a throwback to the days when the country, then a collection of colonies, relied on the fur trade. Canada remains dependent on exports of such staple goods. While such reliance brings economic risks, oil as a staple export has more staying power than the beaver pelts that once fed Europe’s fashion industry, said CIBC World Markets economist Peter Buchanan on a telephonic conversation or Interview from Toronto. “Fur hats come and go in fashion, but it’s harder to do without oil.”

TIPS FOR CHOOSING

Whether it’s coming inside after hitting the slopes, playing ice-hockey, or walking the dog on a brisk night: there’s nothing better than curling up to a nice, warm fire. A fireplace will keep you cozy on cold winter nights, but it should also be safe and energy efficient. If you’re looking to add a new fireplace to your home or upgrade an existing one this season, make sure you know all the options available.

WOOD-BURNING

Wood-burning fireplaces are great for those who love the majesty of an open fire, the smell of burning wood, and the sound of crackling logs. However, you may not know that older wood-burning fireplaces are not very energy efficient and can actually pollute the environment. The good news is that there are newer, safer, and more advanced wood-burning fireplaces available. Look for models that are certified by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)*, as they emit 90% less smoke than traditional wood-burning fireplaces and distribute heat better in your home.

ELECTRIC Electric fireplaces are the perfect way to set the mood, and temperature, at the flick of a switch. They are safe, convenient, low-maintenance, and cost little to install. Although electric fireplaces probably won’t add to the value of your home like other types might, they are great for small spaces and don’t require a chimney or outdoor venting. Most models also come with the option of having the decorative fire turned on while the heating element is off: a great feature if all you’re looking for is a little ambiance.

GAS Gas fireplaces are popular options because they are clean burning, efficient, and don’t even require a chimney. Although they may not offer the same flame sensation as real wood-burning fireplaces, gas is more energy efficient and you won’t need to worry about cleaning up woodchips or ashes. They also distribute heat better and provide a constant supply of fuel, even if the power fails. Look for models that have an Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) rating; the higher the rating, the higher the efficiency.

OTHER OPTIONS

If you already own a fairly old or outdated fireplace, there are still options available. Electric and gas models, for example, are easy to upgrade or replace entirely if you’re looking to make your fireplace more energy efficient. Similarly, you can purchase inserts for traditional wood-burning fireplaces that cause less harm to the environment and improve heating efficiency. And if you want to experience an open fire a little closer to nature, consider buying an outdoor fireplace. Outdoor fireplaces come in many shapes and sizes; just make sure to check your local municipality’s by-laws for safety regulations.

TIPS FOR RENOVATING

YOUR BASEMENT Want to add more space to your home without building up or out? Look no further than your basement. According to the Appraisal Institute of Canada, renovating a basement can give you a 50-75% return on your investment when it comes to selling your home. Here’s how to get it done right:

START WITH A PLAN

What type of space does your family require? Is it an extra living space for your teenager, a playroom for the little one, or perhaps an entertainment area for all to enjoy? Once you decide on how you want to utilize the space, you can layout your design. If budget allows, an architect or interior designer could assist you with the layout design and make valuable suggestions.

DO IT YOURSELF OR HIRE A PROFESSIONAL

Depending on your skill set, budget, and time, you may want to enlist the services of a contractor who has the expertise required to finish a basement. If you do it yourself and don't have the required time or skill to do the job correctly, you may find yourself looking at a repair bill far exceeding the amount you originally thought the project would cost. Make an informed decision. Be sure to carefully weigh all factors when deciding which option is right for you, while considering costs, material, labour, and equipment requirements.

FRAMING

Framing basement walls and ceilings is one of the most important aspects of any basement renovation. Two popular wall framing options are wood or steel studs. Wood is the classic choice. It is versatile, easy to work with, and cost-effective. Whereas steel, although more costly, adds a level of strength, rot resistance and won’t warp and crack like wood might over time. Two popular ceiling framing options are dropped ceiling tiles or drywall. Dropped ceiling tiles provide easy access to pipes and wires which can be a saviour if a tub or toilet on the main level floor springs a leak. Alternatively, dry wall ceilings offer a smooth finish and require less vertical space – a great option if your basement ceiling height is already low.

06

FLOORING There are plenty of basement flooring choices to choose from including laminate, linoleum, vinyl, wood and ceramic tiles. Be sure to match your flooring choice with the intended use of the space and your geographic location. For example, a game room may require more durable flooring than an office. Do you live in an area with a tendency for flooding or is your location dry? Carpet with high density under pad will offer cushion and moisture protection from the typical condensation found in basements. Engineered hardwood made for below grade installation will flex and handle moisture better than traditional hardwood.Ceramic tile is great for bathrooms and laundry rooms and is easy to install on concrete.

ADD A BATHROOM Installing a bathroom in the basement is a great way to add value to your home. Determine if you require a full bathroom or if a powder room will suffice. Powder rooms are relatively simple to install, easy to keep clean, and won’t take up too much room. Full three or four piece bathrooms can provide a comfortable, private, and even luxurious, space for overnight visitors to enjoy. With either option, time and costs can be reduced if bathroom fixtures are located near existing plumbing and are arranged in a line on one wall. Be sure to check local codes for plumbing and electrical aspects of your project.

ADD STORAGE No matter what kind of plan you come up with for your basement, remember to factor in plenty of closet or storage space. This will enable you to de-clutter the rest of your home to keep it tidy and inviting. Further, if you ever decide to move, having this extra storage space should appeal to just about any prospective buyer. A FINISHED BASEMENT CAN NOT ONLY INCREASE YOUR HOME ENJOYMENT BUT IT CAN ALSO ADD VALUABLE SQUARE FOOTAGE. FROM EVERYDAY LIVING TO FINANCIAL VALUE, FINISHED BASEMENTS PROVIDE MANY BENEFITS TO YOU AS A HOMEOWNER.

Whether doing-it-yourself or hiring a professional, interior painting, hardwood flooring and kitchen upgrades are amongst top renovations. If you’ve spent years waking up to wood-panelled walls and soft shag rugs, some home renovations, especially if you’re thinking of selling your home, may be in order. While some renovations

such as updating a kitchen or bathroom may require a trained professional, there are a number of do-it-yourself projects that are sure to increase a home’s resale value. The Royal LePage Renovations and Returns Survey examines some top renovations that bring the best return on investment (ROI), as compiled by the Royal LePage network.

“Amid today’s competitive real estate market, renovations offer a relatively affordable means to boost the value of a home,” said Lisa da Rocha, vice president, marketing and sales, Royal LePage Real Estate Services.

“Do-it-yourself tasks such as painting walls, changing cupboard knobs or laying new flooring will make a house not only more appealing to buyers, but also offer a great return on investment.”

REASONABLE & RADICAL RENOVATIONS From simple aesthetics to washroom overhauls, Royal LePage has identified the top renovations that will increase the equity of a home. The list is ranked in ascending order of cost of project. FRESHEN UP: Adding a new coat of paint can freshen up a house and make the interior look like new not to mention more spacious. For homeowners looking to sell in the near term, neutral colours are most preferred.

WHITE PICKET FENCE?: Building a fence and a deck instantly boosts a home’s appeal. Keeping kids and pets in the yard, and nosey neighbours out, fences provide the back and side yards with a sense of being finished.

FLOORS GALORE: Today, hard surfaces are all the rage. If genuine hardwood exceeds budgets, laminate works well. Buyers like to see hard floors throughout, so if possible, be sure to lay down laminate in dining rooms and living rooms, and even in bathrooms and bedrooms.

OCCUPIED, NO MORE: A bathroom situated on the main floor is increasingly seen by homebuyers as an essential fixture in their next purchase. While many older homes were built with bathrooms only on the second floor, many homeowners are resorting to transforming closets or adding new rooms to accommodate two-piece powder rooms.

LIGHTEN UP: Old or standard-grade light fixtures, electrical and light cover plates can easily date a house. To modernize, add distinct flair to the interior, consider installing new light fixtures. PEBBLE BEACH? WELL, CLOSE: The old adage, you never get a second chance to make a first impression is extremely true when it comes to selling a home. To increase curb appeal and entice buyers, ensure front lawns are tidy and gardening is minimal. While there is no need to go overboard and plant an expensive Japanese Maple, adding some standard shrubs and flowers will make a home more inviting. STYLISHLY STEEL: Similar to the issue with old light fixtures, knobs, fume hoods and backsplashes can make a kitchen seem outdated. Sleek, stainless steel hardware designs have the biggest and most positive impact on those people looking to buy a home. OPENING ALL THE RIGHT DOORS: An elegant entrance enhances a prospective buyer’s first impression of the house itself. ROI FROM THE GROUND UP: To see an even higher return on investment, replace old flooring with new hardwood. While a range of qualities, textures and colours exist, it’s best to opt for a neutral wood colour to accommodate the widest possible array of tastes and décor.

EXQUISITE EN SUITE: Today’s homebuyer prefers bathrooms that have spa-style tubs and modern faucets. Granite and marble tiles are now readily available and can be purchased at relatively affordable prices. EVERYTHING, AND THE KITCHEN SINK: While prices can vary when renovating a kitchen, one thing is certain – updated kitchens bring one of the highest returns on investment. With homeowners spending more time in the kitchen than any other room, it’s no surprise they want the best possible style and functionality. Stainless steel appliances, ceramic sinks and clean lines on cupboards rank as the more preferred finish options. Since kitchens and baths can be such a personal space, it’s wise not to select a dramatic style or colour scheme since your tastes may not be the same as the next owner.

Jon Lee You may be asking yourself why should your business accept credit cards. Today, accepting credit cards for every business is a must. Several decades ago, cash and checks ruled the payment arena. With the convenience of paying with plastic, the amount of customers wanting to pay with credit cards has soared to over 3 trillion a year. This is all because more and more merchants are accepting credit cards by opening a merchant account. TOP FOUR REASONS TO ACCEPT CREDIT CARDS: INCREASE YOUR SALES FASTER CHECKOUT INCREASE YOUR SALES Several studies have shown that the average size of credit card orders is up to three times larger than cash and check. There are several reasons for this. One being that consumers like to keep their current life style and that can result in charging for purchases and paying it off later. Another reason is it allows consumers to make purchases without the need to carry around a lot of cash. This can make consumers feel more secure. FASTER CHECKOUT For retail merchants, accepting credit cards can speed up your checkout line. It only takes a few seconds to swipe a credit card and receive an approval. Whereas it can take a lot longer to take cash and give change or wait for a customer to write out a check.

06

MORE CONVENIENT CHEAPER THAN CASH MORE CONVENIENT For Internet and non-retail businesses, it is critical to accept credit cards. Today, very few consumers want to purchase something online and pay by mailing or faxing in a check. Charging it on a credit card is much more secure, faster and convenient for them as well as the merchant. It would probably be safe to say that the majority of all transactions online are handle with a credit card. CHEAPER THAN CASH Credit card orders are generally always much larger than cash or check orders. For this increase in revenue, it can easily justify and pay for the cost you incur in accepting the credit card. For example, if your credit card orders are a low 10% larger than cash, then that easily pays for the 2% or 3% it would cost you to accept that CREDIT CARD.

With all the stress in today’s world; rapid changes in our economy, competition becoming fiercely intense and having to consistently provide value to our customers and our clients, it’s no wonder that it can be extremely difficult to stay motivated in both daily business and our lives. Staying motivated allows us to push through any obstacles that we may face and overcome any challenges that may plague us. We begin to get motivated, and then before we know it, that motivation is lost. Developing a momentum as it relates to motivation is essential. Keeping that ball of energy rolling may take a little more effort, but reaping the reward is well worth it. When it comes to accomplishment; consistency is power. Doing certain things every day can help keep you in moving forward. Here are 10 tips I put together on how to get and stay motivated.

1.Reward yourself achievements.

for

small

If you have a large task to accomplish, break it up into smaller goals. Every time you achieve each one of these mini goals, you give yourself a reward of your choosing. This will allow you to have something to look forward to while completing the entire task.

2.Fill your mind with inspiring material. Just like we are what we eat, we are also what we think, read, write, and speak. Read books that will motivate you! Listen to motivational speakers during your commute. Those who are social

06

media fans can set up their news feeds to display motivational content; such as pictures, quotes or videos. Speak to yourself and others using positive terms. Having your daily dose of inspiring messages will feed your mind the fuel it needs and give you that extra drive.

3.Visualize yourself already in possession of your goals. Visualization is a powerful tool. Live as if you have already accomplished your goals. This will reinforce to your subconscious mind that you are striving for something. Visualization will trick your subconscious into thinking that it is already in possession of the goal, and you will feel a sense of accomplishment, allowing you to further accelerate.

4. Do not compare yourself to others. Comparing yourself to others can be very detrimental. People are unique and we are all equipped with different talents, ideas and strategies. The only person that we should compare ourselves to is the person who we were yesterday. Only then can we reach the true potential of our personal power.

5. Spend your time with the right kind of people. Spend time with people who have their own goals and those who will help you achieve greatness. You will feed off that energy and it will help you progress.

6. Set goals, write them down and tell others about them. Setting goals is very important. Without them, you will never know when you’ve reached your destination and become fulfilled. Write down your goals on a card and place it in an area where you will see it multiple times a day. Preferably, once when you awake in the morning, and once before you go to bed. The mind thinks in pictures and the visualization of your goals will seep into your subconscious, and thus attaining those goals will become an impulse.

years. A mentor is sure to keep you on track, conditional upon your willingness to put in the effort.

8. Although it may seem counter productive - take time to relax.

Recharging is crucial when it comes to success. In order to have a clear mind that will allow you to work at your peak performance, you must take time to rest. You will simply discourage your-self if you are feeling drained.

In the Bible it says, “work six days; rest one.” However, do not confuse this by resting six days and working one. If you rest too long, the weeds will take over the garden! 9. Learn to overcome failure.

Failure is a part of success. It is essential to know the power of failure. Look at it as a challenge rather than the end. Failure offers the gift of teaching us lessons, and helps us to develop into the best possible version of ourselves. Under-stand that it is only temporary defeat. Keep going!

10. Have faith!

Believe in yourself and what you are trying to accomplish. Napoleon Hill wrote in his book, ‘Think and Grow Rich,’ “one may develop faith by voluntarily suggesting to the subconscious mind that one has faith. The mind comes to take on the nature of influences, which dominate it.

Telling people about your goals and future plans will create accountability. This will give you that extra push "Faith will permit you to see because someone may possi- your end result and allow you to believe in your endless posbly inquire about its status. sibilities." 7.Find a mentor.

A mentor is an example of the kind of person you want to be like. Model your mentor. Someone who has fifteen to twenty years of experience can teach you what he or she knows in two to five

Foods that seem healthy often aren’t, and sugar is the latest culprit By Scott Anderson Courtesy to U&T Magazine

For decades, we’ve been warned about foods high in cholesterol and saturated fats. But lately, attention has shifted to sugar: soft drinks, fruit juices and, surprisingly, yogurt have become the new “danger” foods. To get a better sense of what we should – and shouldn’t – eat when it comes to the sweet stuff, U of T Magazine editor Scott Anderson spoke with Prof. Mary L’Abbé, chair of the department of nutritional sciences.

Sugar seems to have replaced fat as the new dietary no-no. What’s wrong with sugar? There’s nothing “wrong” with sugar in the sense of how our bodies metabolize it. We need a certain amount of sugar for energy; our brain needs sugar to function. The problem with sugar is the amount we consume. Excess sugar gets stored as fat. The World Health Organization has recommended that no more than 10 per cent of our calories come from sugar. Is this guideline enough to address the issue? I was on the panel that made this recommendation. It’s a start. One of the things we wanted to make clear is that the sugar you consume is not just the sugar you tip from a spoon into your coffee. Many beverages have sugars added in processing. Foods that you wouldn’t necessarily think of as sweet – with labels that say “no added sugar” – in fact have added fruit juices or fruit puree and are high in sugar. Yogurt is a good example of this. How can individuals find out how much sugar they eat? No one expects an individual to add up exactly how much sugar they’re getting in a day. But they should make themselves aware of the main sources of added sugar in their diet, such as juices, sport drinks and sodas. And they should acquaint themselves with recommendations for healthy eating, such as minimizing processed foods and eating more whole fruits and vegetables and whole grain products. What’s the problem with processed foods? Think of an apple. You can eat a whole apple or consume the same amount of “apple calories” in the form of apple juice. The sugar in the whole apple results in a slow increase in our sugar levels. But apple juice causes a sudden spike in our sugar levels, putting a strain on our insulin system. From a metabolic point of view, it’s much easier for our body to process the sugar when it’s in the form of an apple rather than apple juice. Over time, frequent and sudden spikes in our sugar level can lead to insulin resistance, Type 2 diabetes or metabolic syndrome. How is this related to body fat? When you experience a big spike in sugar levels, the sugar is pushed into your liver, which processes it and eventually stores it as fat. When sugar is released slowly, your body is able to metabolize it and doesn’t store it as fat. It doesn’t seem like food companies’ interests are aligned with the goal of minimizing processed foods…. You can’t blame the food companies entirely, though, because they wouldn’t make the foods if people weren’t buying them. Consumers demand certain types of products and the food companies respond.

For a while, “low-fat” was the diet buzzword. Then it was “low-sodium,” and now “low-sugar.” Has this led to confusion among consumers about what to eat? We made recommendations to lower fat in the hope that this would lower people’s calorie intake. But in many foods, fat was replaced with sugar. In the end, these foods weren’t always lower in calories. How does your research relate to this? We look at the food supply, including packaged foods and restaurant food – to understand the levels of sodium, trans fats and sugar that are present and how these change as the food supply changes. We also do consumer research. Under current regulations, food manufacturers can talk about sodium in different ways. We wanted to see how consumers look at the information: do they look on the front of the package, where it might say “low in sodium,” or do they check the back for the nutritional facts? Do they think food that is advertised as “low in sodium” is healthier in other ways – lower in calories, for example? It turns out they do. We also showed consumers restaurant menus and asked them what they would order. Another day we’d show them the same menu, but this time with calories on it. Would they change their order? Some don’t and some do. For those who do, we ask why and then measure to see if their calorie intake goes down. For those who don’t, we ask why not. We also want to understand who is more likely to change their order – young people, older people or people wanting to lose weight. Your lab has created tools to give people a better sense of what they’re consuming . . . Last year we released a salt calculator. And we tell people what their main sources of sodium are – such as eating in restaurants or consuming processed meats. We hope they use the information to adapt their eating habits. Could you make one for sugar? Absolutely. The sodium calculator is part of a package of three we did with the University of Ottawa. The first one was about life expectancy. With Given your habits – how much you smoke, drink, exercise, your stress levels and the food you eat – what is your life expectancy? What is the average for a person your age? Then you can play around with it and see what effect reducing the number of cigarettes you smoke each day, for example, has on your life expectancy. The third calculator concerns hospitalizations: given your habits, how many days can you expect to stay in hospital during your lifetime? We also want to develop apps to help consumers when they’re shopping for food.

AND THE ULTIMATE GOAL OF ALL OF THIS? IMPROVED PUBLIC HEALTH – IN THREE WAYS: enabling governments to make good policy decisions; | helping health professionals educate and treat their patients; and helping consumers make healthy choices.
