INTERVIEW WITH CURT BINNS

Curt Binns, a well known giant in the ATM Payments Industry joins us today at MBE Business Magazine to talk about his experience and his thoughts on the ATM Industry in Canada. Curt Binns was the former Vice-President of Operations at ICICI Bank for 2 years and after that joined ATMIA as Executive Director for 10 years. Curt Binns is well known and well informed when it comes to the financial and Atm industry in Canada spending more than 30 years in the industry.

1. Can you please start by telling our readers about your childhood and your upbringing (born and raised etc.)? I was born and raised in Sydney, Cape Breton, NS. My early years were filled with loving support from my parents, Eugene and Regina along with my six siblings. I was always supported in all my ventures. Besides schooling, my extra circular activates included Air Cadets, where I received several honors. These included a scholarship to attain a Private Pilot’s license, leadership course and a summer on a European tour. One of my fondest memories was camping, fishing and hunting with my two brothers. My first job while still in school, (14 years old) was working for Colonel Saunders (KFC) on evening and weekends as a potato peeler, cook, meat cutter and general help as needed. Management was very supportive and accommodated me when it came to time off to fulfill self-improvement and educational commitments. My first job after high school was working for a Financial Institution which involved moving out of the family nest to a posting in Annapolis Valley. Working in the bank and living on a farm as a border, I enjoyed helping with chores (not required but, very much appreciated).

7. What are your thoughts on the Finance and ATM industry knowing new technology is entering into the industry rapidly?

Help those who need help on their current path. Keep your family close.

During the reign of the ATM, there have been many distractions and attacks on the use of cash in our society. Changes in technology over the past few years have advanced at lightning speed allowing distributors to operate. Varieties include Loyalty programs, Cryptocurrency, Online retail banking and payday houses plus the IT knowledge of the next generation. Globally, cash remains the number one form of payment as evidenced when systems crash amid Mother Nature disasters. Despite the advances of technology, we have a long way to go and I believe the ATM remains on the cutting edge of that of technology.

8.What are your thoughts on how the industry has changed especially with ATM ISO’S since it first became a good business back in the late 90’s? I need to applaud all ISO`s especially the early entrants into the ATM Space for their entrepreneurial savvy. They have made a case in point that cash is here to stay well into the future. Our society today, in general the ATM, has become a very necessary convenience.

9. What do you feel has changed in the financial, banking and payment industry before during and after COVID-19 and its effects? With the onslaught of COVID-19, global consumers in the ATM space have learned to adjust to life without using an

breed, thus increasing the population resulting in an automatic increase in the number of zoonotic diseases. These are dangerous mosquitoes which are a cause of transmission of diseases that includes West Nile Fever, Yellow Fever, and Chikungunya. These are diseases that are far more active and mature much faster with warmer temperatures.

THE CHANGING RAINFALL PATTERNS: The climate change has caused the process of rainfall to be much heavier in comparison to normal. There is a huge link with local conditions that also leads to favorable conditions for the transmission of zoonotic diseases. As an example we can consider the Rift Valley Fever that happened in the continent of Africa follow periods of heavy rainfall and floods. The reason behind that is the eggs that are laid by the mosquitoes in the flood water. These are the dangerous mosquitoes that transmit rift valley fever & are a cause of changing rainfall patterns. An increase in the rainfall also leads to increased crop yields. This automatically results in more rodents as well as rodents-borne diseases that are even more dangerous and cause deaths at a much faster rate.

LYME DISEASE- ‘THE CANADIAN EXAMPLE’: The lyme disease became a common one in the province of Quebec in Canada. It is largely due to the ticks that transmit the lyme disease have substantially expanded their range from 35 to 55 Km per year. This expansion has at the same time increased the rate of human-tick contact that was lesser before. This has caused the increase in the cases of lyme diseases in humans as well as the trend is much expected to continue. This continuity in trend is dedicated largely to the expected temperature rise by an additional 2-4 Degree Celsius in the next 30 years.

A rise in international students has been a major cause of an increase in the rate of employment in Canada. This is precisely as the job markets have become more stable and more job opportunities have been created in various sectors. A Govt. research estimates that the international students contribute to some $23.5 billion annually towards the country’s economy. PREVALENCE & INCIDENCE DIFFERING IN MALE & FEMALE? However, interestingly Canadians with dementia now live longer as compared to 20 or 30 years from today, mainly due to the medical treatments and remedies that are available to dementia patients. A technologically enriched medical system in Canada makes sure dementia doesn’t become the cause of death of most patients. For a disease the term ‘Prevalence’ is commonly used and is known as the proportion of people in a population who have a disease at a specified point in time. ‘Incidence’ is the term used for the occurrence of new cases of a disease in at-risk population over a specified period of time.
