Human Interest Black History Month Highlight Lois Carson, local community leader representing Riverside and San Bernardino Counties is known for her work as the executive director of the Community Action Partnership for Riverside County (CAP) for 30 years. Also, Mrs. Carson worked as the director of Upward Bound at the University of California, Riverside (UCR), and served 24 years on the San Bernardino Community College District Board as trustee. A native of Memphis, Tennessee, Lois was the valedictorian of St. Augustine Catholic High School. Lois earned several scholarships and attended Wilberforce University in Wilberforce, Ohio, the rst private historically Black owned and operated university in the United States. After moving to California, Lois graduated from California State University, San Bernardino (CSUSB) in 1967 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English. Additionally, Mrs. Carson earned two master's degrees (English and Education) from the University of California, Riverside (UCR). Mrs. Carson founded the San Bernardino County Status of Women Commission and the Inland Empire section for the National Council of Negro Women (NCNW). In 1973, Mrs. Carson was the rst African American woman elected to the San Bernardino Community College Board of Trustees. During her 24-year tenure as trustee, Lois served two terms as president, as well as board clerk and vice president. In her capacity as trustee, Mrs. Carson advocated for childcare, transfer centers, the Extended Opportunity Programs and Services (EOP&S), welfare reform, and community dialogues. From her dedicated work as trustee, Lois served on the Board of the Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT) and as a member of the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC).

A recipient of several awards, Mrs. Carson was the recipient of the 2007 Lyndon Baines Johnson Human Services Award from the National Community Action Partnership. Lois Carson passed away on July 14, 2021. Page 3


Strata Contracts 400MWh In Rialto

January 26, 2022 - Strata Clean Energy (“Strata”) is proud to announce its Inland Empire Energy Storage (“IEES” aka “Poblano Energy Storage”) was awarded a 15-year Resource Adequacy Agreement with Energy Settlement by Paci c Gas & Electric (“PG&E”). On January 21, 2022, PG&E led an Advice Letter at the California Public Utilities Commission for approval of 6,396 megawatt hours (MWh) of new and incremental utility-scale battery energy storage systems (“BESS”), and Strata is honored to be a part of this historic solicitation. “The IEES project in Rialto, CA is a 100MW stand-alone battery energy storage system contracted to produce 400MWhs of capacity by the summer of 2024,” said Josh Rogol, Chief Development Of cer for Strata. “As a fully developed BESS with site control, an executed interconnection agreement and completed entitlements, IEES was well positioned to respond to the request for offers.” This is Strata’s second contracted BESS in California. The 400MWh Ventura Energy Storage project (now owned by Arevon) came online in the summer of 2021 and is serving Southern California Edison under a twenty-year Resource Adequacy Agreement. 34th Senate District Young Senators Program Senator Thomas Umberg is excited to announce that we are now accepting applications for the 34th Senate District 2022 Young Senators Program! This 6-month virtual program is being offered to students who are seeking to impact change in their community but don’t know where to start. The goal of our young senator’s program is to provide educational opportunities that foster skills in public service, empowering students as community leaders. Participating students will attend monthly meetings, during which they will hear from local and statewide public policy experts, participate in discussions and debates on current events & policy proposals, and strategize on creating and promoting local events that bene t our community. Applications are open to students who meet the following criteria: 1) Be a current High School Freshman, Sophomore, or Junior. 2) Attend at least 1 virtual meeting per month, beginning Saturday, February 26th through August 13th. 3) Complete the Google Form Application here by Sunday, February 18, 2022 No prior work or volunteer experience required!
