PRINCIPAL’S FOREWORD PRINCIPAL’S FOREWORD

Our “Mayflower Promise” is to develop future ready Mayflowerians with a Zest for life, a Curious mind, and a Generous spirit. Our school motto “Mighty in Thought and Deed” has indeed served us well as a beacon to guide our Mayflowerians in navigating the many challenges during the past 2 years’ of COVID disruptions.

On 24 March this year, when the Safe Management Measures (SMMs) were relaxed to allow big-group school events, our teachers and students rose to the challenge under a tight timeline to stage a mass celebration for our school’s 41st Speech Day and Aesthetics Showcase on 14 April. The whole school relished in being able to come together to mark this significant school event after a 2 years’ hiatus.

With the easing of SMMs, the school was also able to resume our Outdoor Adventure Camps for Sec 1 in May and Sec 3 in June. Our Outdoor Education is a key Co-Curriculum of Mayflower that aims to strengthen the holistic development of our students with outdoor experiences, which cannot be replicated in the classrooms. For many of our Sec 1 students, this was their first outdoor experience at Mayflower where they were challenged to go beyond their comfort zone in an authentic outdoor environment. These adventure camps enable our students to work well in teams through their expeditions, kayaking and team building activities. It also helps to forge a strong school spirit.

As we transit to living with COVID and normalising our school activities, we can look back at how the school has journeyed in the past 2 years managing the many challenges thrusted upon us. Together as a school, we have adapted and made changes to the way we socialize and learn in school. We stood together and adhered to the different SMMs. We wore our masks properly, minimized social interactions with friends and stayed home when unwell to prevent any school based Covid transmission. Thankfully, we were able to keep the school open and disruptions to our lessons were minimised. As such, I’m proud to say that our Mayflowerians have grown to be more responsible, resilient, and caring towards one another.

FROM THE VICE-PRINCIPALS

DearMayflowerians,

The education landscape has been evolvingrapidlyoverthepastfewyears. As a society, Singapore has traditionally placedgreatemphasisontheattainmentof high academic qualifications. Theworld we are preparing our students for is however very different from the past with technology disrupting every industryintheworkforce.Howthendowe better prepare our students for the uncertainfuture?

As a school, we strongly believe that students have different strengths, interests, aspirations and learning needs and should not be pursuing the same definition of success. We therefore strive to cater to their varying strengths and interests, helping them to go as far they can. More importantly, we want to guide each student to recognize and uncover his/her interest and passion. It is with this passion that they will be driven to pursue their interests and be able to persevere amidst the setbacks thattheymayfaceinthisjourneyahead.

The introduction of the Personalised Learning Device (PLD) for our students has provided countless opportunities for teaching and learning in our school. Teachers now leverage on the PLDsto provide our students with a wider spectrum of learning experiences. Through the learning experiences that are designed for them by their teachers, students will be able to use the PLDs meaningfully to organise their work, document their own learning and competenciestoachievespecificgoals.

greater agency epending on their readiness, students embark ona school-curated or self-initiated SILto facilitate their learning within and beyond the formal curriculum. These activities are not meant to beonerous and provides students withthe time and space to pursue theirinterest. SIL therefore provides anopportunity to develop students’intrinsic motivation andnurtureself-directedlearning.Allof theseareimportantsoftskillstoprepare themforthefuture!

As we settle into the new norm post-COVID, may I encourage all Mayflowerians to be optimisticand resilientwhenfacinguptochallenges.Itis withthismindsetthatwecancontinueto excelinthefutureahead.

In my second year in Mayflower, I continue to be thankful for the dedicated teaching and non-teaching staff, the supportive parents and alumni, and the curious and teachable students whom wehavetheprivilegeofeducating.

It has been more than 2 years of living with COVID-19. We have learnt what it means to be COVID-resilient. As I look back, the many facets of resilience development are really about helping our students form a sense of selfassurance. Through our efforts, we hope they will develop the dispositionto learn for life, be nimble to adapt to changes, internalise the requisite skills and know how, and when, to tap on the environment to ride the storms that cometheirway.

But, because we live in a culture that celebrates grit and resilience, sometimes havingtoomuchofitmightbeharmfulto our wellbeing. Take a car engine for example. No matter how powerful the engine is, with bald tires or dirty oil, the car is likely to break down. We need to take care of the car, just as how people need to take care of themselves. When negotiatingachallengingpath, weneedto know when to apply the brake, rest and rejuvenate. This is about understanding our personal limits and giving ourselves the time and space to pause, recalibrate our direction or seek help when the need arises. To me, these are the qualities which will develop our studentstobe future-ready.

In 2022, we have continued with our efforts of reimagining the education experience for our students in creative, impactful and sustainable ways. Our Peer Support Programme and Cohort Camps are designed to build strengthsof “Iam,Ican,Ihave”andhelpstudentschart their resilience roadmap through planned reflections. However, what has become even more important today, is finding purpose and meaning, rooted in a sense of belonging and desire to contribute. We will do so by ensuring that no dream is too small to create change and that every Mayflowerian can turn their interests into action and become the best versions of themselves.

SCHOOL ADVISORY COMMITTEE

Dear Mayflowerians,

As yet another year draws to a close, I would like to affirm the students and staff of Mayflower on a job well done.

Throughout the past two years, you have shown strength in adapting to the changes that Covid-19 brought.

While we welcome the easing of restrictions and the end of the pandemic, continue to remain resilient in the face of challenges and always remember that you are mighty in thought and deed!

As we know, the past two years have been very challenging due to the COVID pandemic. I am heartened by the high spirits that the school has displayed and the strong support shown amid all the uncertainties caused by policy changes.

Thank you all for the additional hard and “heart” work! Big kudos to all teachers who are also parents to young kids – it must be extremely exhausting and feel as though you are candles burning on both ends. Now that we all have a breather from the pandemic, hope all of you get to recharge. We will have a better year ahead!

Learn earnestly and live your dreams. There is no limit!

Everything should be done in love. Stay awake, stand firm in the faith, be brave, be strong. Rise up; the matter is in your hands. We will support you, so take courage and do it!

SCHOOL ADVISORY COMMITTEE

SCHOOL ADVISORY COMMITTEE

As MF alumnus and now SAC member, it is my privilege to pen a few thoughts for the school’s Yearbook. As the academic year draws to a close, I encourage all staff and students to reflect on the past 12 months; what was done well, and what could be better. No one is ever perfect and each of us can improve. A simple goal is to be a better version of yourself tomorrow than you were yesterday.

For the graduating cohort, I urge you to hold dear your connections; to your friends, your teachers, and the school. These bonds will serve you well as you embark on your next life adventure and bring you cherished memories as they did for me.

Warm appreciation to the Principal and all staff of Mayflower for their selfless work and dedication to the progress and well-being of our student community.

When I turned 60, I gave myself a physical challenge to climb the World’s Highest FreeStanding Mountain, Mount Kilmanjaro, Tanzania at 5,895M. It was not an easy feat, especially at the tail end of the hike as the air pressure was dense which made it difficult to breathe. I was close to giving up but I decided to take things one step at a time, and through grit and perseverance I eventually reached the summit. Although I was the last person to ascend the summit that day, it was one of the most satisfying feelings I had ever felt as I overcame my fears and achieved my goal.

Although the past few years have been challenging, it is similar to my climbing experience. We should be defined by ups and downs of the journey, and not just by the destination. I have seen the resilience of MFSS and how you have bounced back from the COVID-19 pandemic. I hope you will continue to keep the memories and lessons to heart and remember not to give up easily in whatever you do.

I congratulate you on your achievements over the past year and wish you the best as you strive for greater heights in 2023.

As 2022 draws to a close, we can take pride that we have not only survived but thrived throughout the pandemic, and are putting Covid19 behind us and resuming our lives.

Just remember that, like a book, the end of a chapter is the beginning of a new chapter. The future is unknown and it not only holds many challenges but also many opportunities.

YOLO, You Only Live Once. Life is short, so we were never meant to live easy, we were meant to live our best life.

You have to conquer every obstacle before you can reach the top of the mountain.

As long as we remember to “Be mighty in our thoughts and deeds” and persevere in what we do, it is destined that “every mayflowerian will bloom” long after you have walked out these hallowed school gates.

My message is simple: “Tough times don’t last, tough people do”.

Be a Warrior, Live your Best Life, and Be the Best Version of Yourself.

I wish you and your families all a happy holiday season.

Follow your dreams!

NATIONAL DAY CELEBRATIONS: STRONGER TOGETHER, MAJULAH!

The school celebrated this year’s National Day with greater pomp and fanfare as safety management measures were relaxed in Semester 2. The week leading to National Day was peppered with fun-filled activities like Guess the Song contest and Own a Tile with a National Day message event. On the eve of National Day, Mayflowerians celebrated the nation’s birthday with class-based activities before coming together as a school to witness the parade segment and performances by Chinese Dance, Concert Band and Modern Dance. Joshua Sotarduga of 3 Justice also debuted his original lyrics and song composition “Down the Paths of Singapore”, which was one of the top 20 entries for SYF’s The Youth Station Project 2022. In addition, the school also carried out the Lock-down Drill exercise to impress upon the students on the need to be prepared even in times of peace and stability.

CROSS-COUNTRY & SPORTS FIESTA ON YOUTH DAY

Students representing their Houses for the competitive Cross-Country turned up bright and early in school and were escorted to Bishan Park to take part in our first Cross-Country race after a long absence. Staff members also ran alongside them to get their share of exercise along the 2.4km route. Over at MF, the different levels and classes were rostered to take part in a whole host of activities like Kin-Ball, Tag Archery, Spartan Race and Human Foosball. Fringe activities included Soccer Snooker, Meltdown, Bouncy Castle, High Wall, Goofy Ball and Thirsty Hippo.

And what’s a celebration without food?! Students had their fill at the carnival stalls brought in just for the event. Popcorn, churros and ice-cream, anyone?

41ST SPEECH DAY AND AESTHETICS SHOWCASE 2022: MAYFLOWERIANS ON THE GLOBAL STAGE

This year’s Speech Day recognised and celebrated the achievements of our Mayflowerian prize winners who have embodied our school motto, “Mighty in Thought & Deed” in pursuing excellence.

The Aesthetics Showcase was also a splendid display of the artistic talents of our Performing Arts groups. In line with the theme, our student artists treated us to contemporary pieces that took us to faraway destinations in Europe, the Americas and the Orient. While the reflective pieces sought to mirror the darker undertones of the Covid pandemic, they also brought out the wonderful optimism associated with the school’s emergence from the pandemic Mightier Together.

INDUSTRIAL VISIT

The objective of the industrial visit was to allow our Sec 3s to get firsthand exposure to a working environment. During their visit, students spoke to professionals who shared about their job scope and experiences. This encouraged students to start thinking of their ‘end goal’ and make informed decisions about their post-secondary pathway. In addition it also helped students to see the relevance and application of skills they learn in school in a real world setting.

SUPERHERO PERSONALITY PROFILING ACTIVITY

Students did a Superhero Profiling test to gain greater awareness of their strengths and weaknesses. This session was useful in helping them narrow down possible careers that they can consider. Having identified these possible careers, it inspired them to plan their post-secondary pathway towards achieving their goal.

INTER-CLASS GAMES

3E AND 3J TRANSITION PROGRAMME

Students had a fun and engaging workshop where they learnt relevant competencies to develop resilience, optimism and peer support skills as they adapt to the higher demands in upper secondary. In addition, they were equipped with tips on how to develop positive habits and stay motivated, positive and resilient in face of challenges.

Students showcased their teamwork and excellent coordination skills through an e-sports competition–Overcooked Challenge.

Students showed great team spirit and camaraderie as they came together as a class to compete in the inter-class games of Dodgeball.

CRAFT & TECHNOLOGY

The Craft and Technology (C&T) Department’s vision: Curious, creative and critical individuals empowered to impact self and others meaningfully through making. This vision is applicable for both teachers and students where it allows continuous reflection and professional development in a conscious effort to provide the best learning experiences for students.

ACHIEVEMENTS/PROGRAMMES

This year, one of the key highlights for the C&T dept is the physical launch of the Work-in-Progress Exhibition in October. After a two year hiatus, the department welcomed teachers from S1 schools as well as parents and relatives of the Sec 3 students to the exhibition. The exhibition offered opportunities for the students to curate and showcase their learning experience throughout their Sec 3 journey. It also gave our C&T students a platform to display their other talents such as hosting, playing musical instruments and singing.

Nutrition & Food Science Unit

The lower sec FCE & upper sec NFS syllabuses are designed to empower students to be knowledgeable and confident health ambassadors who are able to influence their families and the community. They are also able to make responsible and informed decisions to manage resources optimally and sustainably.

Students in the lower secondary start off by learning basic cooking skills that enable them to serve nutritious meals and progress to being able to cook a dish independently for a food business project. The process helps to develop critical thinking and analytical skills as well as nurture their entrepreneurial spirit as they progress to upper secondary.

Highlight for NFS unit:

1) Our dept SIL activity: ‘Set for success’ where students explore gelatinisation in desserts starting from the simplest (jelly) to the more challenging ones like gelatin art), the video features our student Nasuha Salamat of 2D.

2) Our day to day lessons:

Art Unit

The Art unit always aims to provide students with the opportunity to give form and meaning to their ideas, thoughts and feelings through visual and tactile forms. In Mayflower, the process of art making involves the use of a variety of media and technologies, as well as its role in the development of critical and creative thinking.

DT Unit Design and Technology is a ProjectBased Learning (PBL) subject applying design thinking for solving situated problems identified in the real-world context. The subject curriculum develops students’ competence and autonomy through a self-directed approach.

At Mayflower Secondary, the D&T unit has designed and re-designed the curriculum to enable all D&T students to become efficacious in the

sense-making of the three pillars of D&T - empathy, idea imagining and prototyping. The curriculum focuses on developing competence for mastery in design thinking through experiential learning.

 The design thinking at lower secondary starts with the students experiencing the wonders of designerly learning through the structural build-up of truss using common daily items of toothpick and bluetack. This designerly activity opens the opportunity to a designerly learning approach.

 The mobile robotic curriculum is a core part of D&T unit with the students inducted early at lower secondary curriculum through tinkering with electronics and lego programming sessions. This programme enables the passion for interest-based robotic technology to be ignited.

HUMANITIES

VISION: Humanities students and staff are lifelong learners with a global perspective.

The Humanities team strives to prepare our students to excel beyond the examinations. We aim to instil in them qualities needed to provide balance and perspective in an ever changing technology-focussed world. With a sound humanities education, we hope to strengthen our student’s global view, broaden their intellectual foundation, and develop communication skills needed to be responsible problem solvers in this VUCA world. Thus in a nutshell, we’re all about putting our students into the driver’s seat.

This is achieved with the affordances of technology. E-pedagogy has thus become the buzz word as the team plans and delivers learning experiences that allow for students to take on an active role in learning.

A range of learning experiences, mostly anchored in the use of inquiry learning is deliberately planned to stretch their disciplinarity thinking.

We strongly believe in our vision of “Every Mayflowerian a FutureReady Mathematical Thinker” and customise our Mathematics curriculum to guide every Mayflowerian towards achieving this vision. In Mayflower, Mathematics comes alive and exists beyond textbooks and the confines of the classroom. Students learn Mathematics through inquiry and collaboration and present their findings to their peers. This shapes their inquisitiveness, moulds them into confident people and enriches their learning.

ACHIEVEMENTS/PROGRAMMES

We have a strong enrichment programme to complement our curriculum, providing opportunities for every student to experience aspects of Mathematics which cannot be experienced in daily lessons. PHYSICAL EDUCATION & MUSIC

Our Physical Education Curriculum is learner-centred and develops a zest for life, a curious mind and a generous spirit in our students. They actively participate in and enjoy physical activities through the acquisition of skills, concepts and an attitude that leads to lifelong physical health and an appreciation for the outdoors.

The 2-Year Music Programme strives to bring fun and joy to our students through music making and dance. Teamwork, character and values development are also infused into the lessons.

Through PE modules like Outdoor Education, Games, Physical Health and Fitness, and programmes like Cross Country Run and Sports Fiesta, Sec 1 Cohort Camp and Sec 3 MOE-OBS Challenge, we instil excellence and the joy of learning in students.

The Music Curriculum progresses from the keyboard, ukulele and Bandlab, a digital handphone app, to creating song covers and composition of jingles. The Hip Hop Dance Programme helps students gain self-confidence through an Inter-Class Dance Competition.

 In our MF Music Programme, Sec 1 students learn how music can be related to body movements through dance. They enjoy this Hip Hop Dance Module and at the same time gain self-confidence as they move to music.

 After much preparation during their Dance Module, the Sec 2’s strutted their stuff in the hall at the InterClass Dance Competition, during the week assembly programme in Term 2.

 “A department that plays together, stays together!” Fun time bowling at SAFRA Yishun for Department Learning Day, end of June holidays.

 Great department bonding! A great McDonald’s meal to get energy for the Department Learning Day Bowling at SAFRA Yishun in June.

 In the Music Programme, students focus on instrumental mastery in music making. Here, the Sec 2’s combine the use of keyboard, ukulele and the Bandlap, a digital handphone app that creates drum accompaniment patterns.

 With the use of technology, Outdoor Education during PE can be more fun! Here, students use the Sportident set to help them time their Orienteering effort.

 One of the most important pieces of equipment when one is outdoors is the tent. Pitch it well, and it will protect you from the elements and make your time out in the open, more comfortable and safer. Here, at the PE Outdoor Education lesson, students learn to pitch a shelter using ponchos.

 At Department Time-Tabled Time, PE colleagues demonstrate how to cook popcorn, as part of our Outdoor Education Module.

 An after-school event, the MF Badminton Tournament in Term 2 attracted many student enthusiasts that came together in friendly competition.

 Camping Days are here again, after Covid-19 restrictions! The Sec 1 Cohort had a most enjoyable stay out camp at MOE Changi Coast Outdoor Adventure Centre end of Term 2. Students were put in a mixed group with campers from other classes, and they enjoyed their camaraderie together, in camp activities like kayaking, outdoor cooking and beach clean-up.

 The Cross-Country Run has returned to Bishan Park this year as part of the Youth Day Sports Fiesta! This Inter-House Competition saw 64 runners competing in 4 Divisions over a distance of 2.4km.

MOTHER TONGUE

The Mother Tongue Department believes in the importance of nurturing students to learn and love Mother Tongue Languages as living languages and also appreciate the beauty of colourful cultures behind them. To engage our learners, our teachers engage in life-long learning to continuously improve our pedagogies and effective use of ICT in their lesson and assessment design. MT teachers hope to infuse ICT into Assessment for Learning (AfL) and encourage students to be self-regulated learners.

ACHIEVEMENTS/PROGRAMMES

To enrich the students’ exposure to language and culture, we designed an ALP Programme in reading, speech and drama, Journalism and Broadcasting. We also held Mother Tongue Language Fortnight, showcasing the theme on Chinese and Malay weddings. We had a festive Chinese New Year celebration which includes an e-concert and engaging classroom activities for the whole school.

This year, we continued to stretch our students by participating in a variety of competitions. These includes:

- National Bilingual Debate Competition 2022

- 3T National Inter-Schools Translation Competition

- The 5th National Textbook Recital Competition

 To strengthen students’ critical thinking skills and develop their interest in debate, they have trained and participated in the National Secondary Schools Bilingual Debate Competition. They honed their bilingualism through the sharpening of their critical thinking and rebuttal skills.

 Mayflower students and staff celebrated a special Chinese New Year with our very own “Tiger Dance Competition” followed by an e-concert in the classrooms.

 To spread our love to the community during the festive season, staff and students also rallied together for a donation drive to provide the AWWA elderly with daily necessities.

 Our school sent three Sec 3 Express students for this year’s National Inter-Schools Translation Competition. This annual competition aims to promote bilingualism in our students.

 Our Malay Language teachers conducted Malay wedding craft workshops for our students while teaching them about Malay wedding customs.

 Our Chinese Language teachers conducted Papercutting and Red Packet-making workshops for our students while teaching them the origins of these traditions.

 Before the start of our Mother Tongue Intensive Programme for the students taking their Mid-year O Level Mother Tongue Examination, the department came together to prepare care packs for the students

 The teachers work closely with the instructors to conduct quality lessons for our students to teach them skills for reading and speech and drama.

SCIENCE

Our department vision is that we aim to provide a Hands-on, Minds-on & Hearts-on authentic Science learning experience in a nurturing and caring environment.

Students are equipped with a holistic understanding of the world around them through an inquiry-based approach in the teaching and learning of Science.

The department hopes to inspire every Mayflowerian to develop a learning experience of the Sciences beyond the classroom and enhance their depth of learning in the various domains of Science.

ACHIEVEMENTS/PROGRAMMES

Our lessons design are anchored in the 5E Instructional model – Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate and Evaluate. Harnessing the effective use of the students’ Personal Learning Devices allows the students to take on more ownership in their learning.

Through our signature Learning Journey programme for the Normal (Technical) students, we provide students with the opportunity to experience Science and relate theory to action. THE ACADEMIC COUNCIL TEAM

The Mayflower Academic Council Team is led by our Vice Principal, Mr. Goh Keng Teng and comprises the Academic and ICT Heads as well as the SSD. The team aims to provide Mayflowerians with a student-centric curriculum designed to prepare our students for the future. The recent paradigm shift in education has meant that the distinct roles of teachers and learners have become increasingly blurred, and education is no longer defined in terms of what a teacher will teach but in terms of what a student will be able to demonstrate. Consequently, the team has been refining the MF curriculum, and technology is being harnessed to maximise learning.

LEARNER-CENTRED PEDAGOGIES & ASSESSMENT FOR LEARNING

Across departments, the team ensures that the learning experiences have been changing to promote active learning in the classroom. Problem-solving, inquirybased learning, design thinking and process writing are just some of the key approaches used pervasively to promote active and deep learning. Subjects are also taught in a way that allows students to appreciate its relevance in real world contexts. The Team assesses the professional development

DISCIPLINE

needs with the SSD and the Teacher Leaders to ensure that our teachers are well supported and equipped to adopt learner-centred pedagogies in a technologically enhanced environment. Other than looking into the pedagogies, the team makes decisions pertaining to assessment. Assessments conducted by each department are coordinated at this level to ensure that they are meaningful and comfortably paced out to minimise stress for our students.

CUSTOMISATION

At Mayflower, we recognize that every student is unique and so conscious effort is made to customise pedagogy and programmes so that no student is left behind. The learning progression of each and every student is monitored, and the holistic development of the student is considered when deciding on the necessary support needed. The intervention strategies involve creating structured remediation and consultation sessions, after-school study venues for graduating classes as well as individualised help for struggling students. The team also works with the Student Development Team in identifying students that need special attention, including the need for greater parental involvement.

ACADEMIC INFORMATION AND ASSESSMENT

AIA is the central body that manages student information and implements sound processes related to academic and assessment matters. The committee comprises four units: School-based Assessment, National Examination, Subject-based Banding and Secondary 3 Subject Allocation. The committee works closely with School Leaders, management team, staff and parents to make key decisions.

Do the right thing even when no one is looking! This is what we expect of our Mayflowerians and positive discipline is what the DC Team in MFSS advocates.

For discipline to be successful, connection must come before correction. Hence the purpose of positive discipline is to teach students by first establishing a secure relationship with them as students learn best when they feel comfortable and connected to others in the framework of safe relationships. When there is a sense of connection, there is mutual respect.

This year the Discipline Committee is really happy to announce the addition of a new member, Mdm Liu Xuefang, to further strengthen connections with our students

Student voice is very important to us and this year we have made changes to the rules - from handphone usage to recess - after garnering feedback from students and endorsement from staff. These changes are in line with connecting with our students and the aim of cultivating self-responsibility.

ACHIEVEMENTS/PROGRAMMES

For GEAR-UP, the team is focusing on getting the students to contribute back to school under the banner of ‘Paying it Forward’. Mastering the Rubik’s Cube has enabled the seniors to reach out to the juniors while imparting skills to them while Own A Bench or Tile projects have allowed the students to rope in their peers in the spirit of inclusivity to add colour and vibrancy to the school environment. The

outcomes of these projects have also highlighted the creative talents of our Mayflowerians.

Moving forward the DC will increase the scope and depth of the GEAR-UP students ‘Paying it Forward’.

Also this year, a new twist was added to the recognition of positive behaviour by ‘Catching Mayflowerian Doing Good’. Students who received good conduct cards were given a spin in the toy capsule machine for a surprise gift. Response has been great and overwhelming. The DC team hopes to see more Mayflowerians being ‘caught doing good’ in the near future!

The team has put in place effective structures and processes (i.e. communication with stakeholders, upskilling of staff and students, and collaboration with valuable partners etc.) to achieve the best outcomes for the school.

ACHIEVEMENTS/PROGRAMMES

Personal learning devices (PLDs) were rolled-out to the Secondary One cohort in Term 2. Students were equipped with the necessary skills to ensure they use their device responsibly. Staff were given opportunities for professional development on PLD device management and the Google Workspace. Likewise, students were given opportunities to upskill themselves through technology mediated self-directed and self-paced lessons, as well as further explore their interest via a technology focussed SIL.

STAFF WELLNESS

The Staff Wellness Committee is made up of teacher representatives from all departments. The committee looks after the physical, intellectual, social and emotional aspects of the staff and synergise them through various activities which promote teamwork, open-mindedness and a caring culture.

 The SWC takes care of staff’s physical and social well-being through several iClub Sessions each year. Different types of games such as Badminton and Amazing Race were organised to suit staff interests and allow people from different departments to get to know one another better in a relaxed mode.

STAFF WELLNESS

 Staff awards recognise and give affirmation to staff who have gone the extra mile. Platforms are also provided for students, parents and even staff members to constantly affirm staff of their efforts in nurturing students in the school.

 SWC organises various workshops to promote life-long learning and self-care amongst staff. The Origami Workshop which was conducted as part of the Chinese New Year celebration was well-received by the staff. It offered a relaxing physical and emotional outlet to staff who needed the time-off and a time to foster relationships.

 Festival Celebrations like Chinese New Year “Lo-Hei”, Hari Raya and Deepavali Makans are also organised yearly for staff to celebrate uniqueness and embrace racial and religious harmony. Staff can enjoy fun-filled sessions decked with sumptuous food and games.

 Activities that stretch the minds and push the bodies a little bit more are included in Staff Learning Day. These activities allow staff to go beyond their usual thinking caps and strengthen teamwork and build a healthy school culture. The SWC also organises Learning Journeys that brings staff to new and creative environments to provide valuable perspectives in order to encourage continuous growth and promote happiness and fulfilment to individuals and camaraderie to departments and the school as a whole.

 Mental wellness is an important aspect of staff wellness. The SWC organises several initiatives to promote self-care and mindfulness. One such initiative is the “Quiet Time” where staff have a 15-minute lights-out session to have mindful reflection and rest after school. This decompressing session with beautiful zen music was very wellreceived and will be conducted regularly to uplift staff spirit.

The Aesthetics Committee has been playing a vital role in supporting the performing arts scene, which is one of the niche areas of the school. Nestled under the Learn for Life (LLP) Programme, it has developed many artistic talents from the school and will continue to be a platform for students to display their artistic skills.

ACHIEVEMENTS/PROGRAMMES

In March, the committee organised the Lunchtime Concert to provide a platform for the students to showcase their talents in the performing arts. In July, we had the Mayflower Got Talent competition to give recognition to students who excel in their individual art forms. Other than the two concerts, the committee also planned and curated a few assembly programmes on Wednesdays for the viewing pleasure of the school. These included singing, dancing and drama performances by external arts groups. The MF Jam Band is also an interest group that the committee has initiated for the students to get together and play musical instruments. Lastly the Arts Ambassadors Talent Development and Leadership Programme mentors and trains students to plan and carry out event management and also hone their leadership skills.

STUDENT REFLECTION

I think we did the performance well and it was great that we all encouraged one another. I think there was a lot of positive energy and I also enjoyed interacting with my audience. However, I should also keep calm during the performance even though the music and sound volume was not clear. As I performed I became more brave and I gathered up my courage to face the crowd. I think that the school should continue providing everyone a supportive environment where everyone cheers for the participants and we all have fun together.

DANCE MOTTO: Practice like you have never won, dance like you have never lost

CHINESE DANCE AIMS TO

• Develop students’ talent, passion, and appreciation of dance through Arts Experience, Arts Exposure, and Arts Excursion.

• Showcase their talent and hone their dance skills through collaborative learning strategies.

• Contribute to the community through their skills, talents, and knowledge.

• Develop socio-emotional skills and leadership in students.

ACHIEVEMENTS/PROGRAMMES

• Performed during CCA Exhibition 2022

• Sec 1 dancers performed during Lunchtime Concert 2022

• Online performance recording for Chinese New Year 2022

• New committee organized a farewell for our secondary 4 dancers in the end of Term 1

• Performed in the Aesthetics

Production at Speech Day 2022

• Resilience Workshop 2022

 I was really excited and nervous that I had to perform in front of so many people. It was my first time experiencing that. During our practices, many dancers made mistakes but we managed to resolve them and enjoyed the entire process. - HOO ZI YI (3F)

 I’m extremely grateful for the chance to represent Chinese Dance in the Chinese New Year performance. I saw everyone working hard to perfect the dance and that motivated me to continue to work hard with my CCA mates. I felt proud of my CCA following the successful performance we had put up.

 During our weekly dance practice, the instructor starts by letting us warm up. We will then practise and learn new moves to improve on our technique. This allows us to push ourselves to new limits while working on our skills. -

(3A)

 Other than weekly dance practices, our instructor also often plays videos for us to watch. The dance videos that the instructor shows us broaden our knowledge of the art form and develop our appreciation for its elegance and sophisticated techniques. I was exposed to various types of dance such as the lion dance and the miao dance, which had their own cultural heritage and background.

 LTC was the first performance I did in secondary school. It was a memorable experience as I was performing with my new CCA mates. It taught me how to adapt to a new environment and work with new people. Overall, I had an enjoyable time preparing for the performance.

 We benefited greatly from this workshop. We got to learn how to reframe our perspectives and persevere through our failures. I believe that we can apply what we have learnt to persevering in all our sessions and become better performers.

CHINESE ENSEMBLES

Chinese Ensembles is made up of three sections: Percussion, Plucking and Bass. The Percussion section plays mainly Chinese drums, the Plucking section plays the Liu Qin, Pipa and Ruan, and the Bass section plays the Cello. The sections also play other unique instruments to complement their music, and are fielded as Mixed and Percussion Ensembles for the biannual Singapore Youth Festival Arts Presentation (SYFAP), where they have consistently attained Distinctions since their establishment.

ACHIEVEMENTS/PROGRAMMES

With the gradual relaxation of safety measures, the CCA has been able to perform in the following events: Chinese New Year (Jan), Aesthetics Production (April), Mid-Autumn Festival at THK SAC (Aug) and Teachers’ Day (Sep). In addition, the members were also able to participate in the following CCA group activities: Sec 1 Orientation Programme (Feb), Seniors’ Leadership and Mentoring Skills Workshops (May), VIA Project at THK SAC (Aug), Teachers’ Day Celebrations (Sep) and Sports Enrichment Programme (Sep).

 Our Percussion Ensemble also saw action in this year’s ‘live’ Aesthetics Production. Utilising a mix of light and sound effects, they wowed the crowd with their excellent rhythmic grooves.

 2 years ago, a group photo of our CCA in our performance attire would have been unthinkable! We are glad that the small things in life are gradually coming back to normal.

 We were able to organise a proper farewell for our Sec 4s this year. Here, our Sec 4s are looking through the mementos made for them by their juniors.

 As an equal opportunity CCA, we accept students both with and without foundation in music, as well as through DSA. We currently count over 50 members in our musical family.

 At the heart of the CCA are the next generation of Sec 1 members. Here, prospective students from the Sec 1 cohort check out the Chinese Ensembles booth during CCA Exhibition.

 The CCA takes pride in developing our members into the best they can be through a comprehensive Orientation and Familiarisation Programme and Seniors’ Leadership and Mentoring Skills Workshops conducted in-house.

 During Teachers’ Day Celebrations, our Sec 2 and 3 Percussionists wowed the school with their rendition of “滚核桃”.

 With the relaxation of safety measures, The Sec 2s and 3s were finally able to do a ‘live’ performance for the seniors at THK SAC while the Sec 1s made Mid-Autumn lanterns with the seniors as part of their VIA project.

 The CCA spends a lot of effort integrating our new members into our music family. Here, Mr Wu, our percussion instructor, is teaching our Sec 1 and 2 members.

 Our Mixed Ensemble was able to perform ‘live’ in front of an audience this year in the Aesthetics Production. Conducted by our Music Director Mr Chiang, it was a great comeback after a 2-year hiatus.

 Our students were able to enjoy a much-needed break before the EOY study break by learning In-line Skating as part of their Sports Enrichment Programme.

DRAMA

The Mayflower Drama Club aims to groom its members into confident, expressive performers and openminded, sensitive appreciators of the Arts through the teaching and honing of core skills such as voice projection, articulation, character and world building in script-writing and exploration of physical theatre.

ACHIEVEMENTS/PROGRAMMES

The club recently obtained a Distinction in the Singapore Youth Festival presentation 2021. It was a wonderful celebration of the students’ hard work and a clear portrayal of the great potential they possess as performers. Despite being limited by the social distancing measures, the club also took to multimedia platforms in showcasing their research and storytelling skills to raise awareness for mental health (2021) during assembly.

 Many hours are spent on perfecting our story-telling. Costumes and props are also an integral part of creating a believable fictional space. Our members are exposed to a wide range of experiences not only as a performer but also as props and costumes managers, stage managers, backstage crew, lighting and sound effects crew.

 Thrilled to be able to perform with their masks off after a long time, the actors and backstage crew delivered a compelling, relatable story about friendship and overcoming unforeseen accidents and injury. The Joint Aesthetics Production was a huge success on Speech Day.

 One of the highlights of being part of the Drama Club is the joy and thrill of performing a self-devised play for SYF. The members put in a lot of effort in researching the historical figures and devising believable sketches of their characterisation to propel the audience into the fictional world.

 Brainstormed and devised by students, this is a play that is the pride of the Drama Club. It explores the tenacity of the bonds of friendship in face of adversity and provides insight to what is most important about sincere care among people.

 Gaining exposure to puppetry helps to widen their performance skills as they learn how to express emotions and develop story-telling skills through different dramatic forms.

 Specialists at multi-tasking, our members at the sound and lighting control panel are adept at giving cues and supporting our actors on stage.

 The Farewell Party is a bittersweet event. Members will always come and go, but the bonds will never be broken.

 The juniors plan the annual party to show the outgoing seniors lots of love; everyone wishes the seniors all the best in the national examinations and the seniors enjoy a brief reprieve from intensive revision.

ENTERPRISE CLUB

In the Enterprise CCA, we would like to inculcate the values and skills to be an entrepreneur, as well as to develop students to be creative and visionary so that they can plan ahead.

Every student will be given an opportunity to experience a planning process. This student-directed initiative will allow students to be more involved in the brainstorming, planning, experimenting and execution process to give them a flavour on how to organise an event.

VISION:

To think and act like an entrepreneur

MISSION: Creation through teamwork

ACHIEVEMENTS/PROGRAMMES

The Enterprise Club engages the students through different programmes such as special events in the Verdure (Hari Raya, CNY/Vday, etc). They also participated in the Sports Elective Programme, learning archery to bond the CCA.

Students also participated in various competitions like SYF 2022, where students designed artwork that is related to the environment. They also took part in the Young TrailBlazer Competition, where they had to come up with a solution given a problem statement.

 Digital art workshop held by our very own students to teach the CCA more about digital art and what are some things to help captivate the audience.

 Before Hari Raya, students came up with various products and had their first hand experience with making satay, and various food products for sales.

 Student learn a few skills and Resin Art was one of them. They learnt more about the chemicals and what is a good piece of resin art.

 This 1-day student-led CCA camp was planned and executed by the student leaders. Students had fun bonding with their CCA mates through well organised games and activities.

 With the relaxed management measures for COVID-19, the students were finally able to have fun as a CCA and tried Archey as part of their Sports Elective Programme.

CHINESE DANCE

While I was in sec 1 I had seniors to dance together with me for my first ever LTC dance but sadly the sec 1 had to dance by themselves this year as the seniors were busy with other dance. It was really brave of them to be able to go up on stage and put in their very best efforts into this dance! They have done MFCD proud, and showed resilience and determination! MFCD is a place where everyone is bonded, supportive and always putting in their best effort!

CHOIR

The Aesthetic Production was the first concert I had in 2 1/2 years. It was great to perform once again after Covid-19. This experience has taught me that with perseverance and teamwork, we can do it!

I’ve been through many difficulties when choir practices were held online. Never thought that learning music and singing through zoom was possible.

CCA REFLECTIONS CONCERT BAND

During the four years in the band, there were definitely ups and downs, with the many achievements and obstacles I faced. However, it is clear that this experience was enriching, engaging, and most importantly fun. I wish I could relive every moment in the band again.

DRAMA

In Drama CCA sessions, everyone is allowed to express their opinions and ideas freely in the inclusive space that we have created. We build on each other’s ideas, stirring our imagination and creativity, and emerge stronger together, both in our craft and in our bonds!

I was really glad and honoured to be a part of this year’s Chinese New Year celebration performance. Despite the safe distancing measurements, I’m relieved that our Chinese dancers managed to put up two performances in two groups through video recording. To start off,《大日 子》was a lively dance to celebrate this year’s Chinese New Year and it was our last performance with the graduating batch of seniors so it was heartwarming and fulfilling to be able to put up such vibrant performance with them. Our second performance, 《七色花》, showed graceful movement that our dancers spent months and efforts preparing for. It was tough learning through our screens but we eventually overcame it as one and managed to perform smoothly.

However, what encouraged me to push on and do my best for the choir was my seniors and peers.

– Su Yu Yan, 4A, President of the Choir 2021-2022

CONCERT BAND

Being part of the Mayflower Concert Band is like being on a roller-coaster ride with many ups and downs. In the band, we had to learn how to work together to produce wonderful music. Though the process is difficult and takes time to do so, the satisfactory results always make our efforts worth it!

– 2022 2I Chit Myat

Band has taught me so much about discipline and teamwork essential not only for band, but also for life. The band members and seniors here are warm and welcoming and would help out whenever possible.

Concert Band allowed me to develop and improve myself to be a better person. Although covid has affected practice, it did not stop me. Instead, it made me appreciate the times that i spent together with the members and the performance that we have put our very best into such as speech day and national day.

MODERN DANCE

DRAMA

Drama is really fun and inclusive as our teachers and CCA mates always make sure to include everyone in the enjoyable activities. None of us feel left out and we get to learn a lot as we have fun too!

Drama Club is the best place to socialise and start friendships with people who carry the same passion. I enjoy the freedom of expressing myself and being creative with my friends.

Modern dance is a CCA that is slightly demanding as constant practice is required for us to learn and progress. But because of that, it pushes me to work harder and improve. With that being said it is also very fulfilling as I get to experience performing in front of a crowd and to explore my dance abilities. I am also able to bond with my cca mates and make new friends through modern dance. I have also learnt several values such as discipline and perseverance. Exploring Jazz was a fulfilling experience as I was able to step out of my comfort zone and learn a new genre of dance.

The CCA has given me the opportunity to show my talent and passion for dance through multiple performances. I have learnt to be more disciplined and ways to deal with difficult situations. BOWLING

My journey with Mayflower Bowling so far has been fun, enriching and exciting! Despite initial doubts in myself, bowling is now my passion! This is all thanks to my coaches, who have helped me to improve my bowling skills tremendously and motivated me to stay resilient in times of difficulties. My supportive CCA teachers are always there to listen to my concerns and provide feedback and solutions. Last but not least, my amazing teammates are always supportive and encouraging me. Laughing and joking around with them make up precious memories that will forever stay close to my heart. Bowling with Team Mayflower has brought me so much joy, satisfaction and comfort. If I were to choose a CCA again, Bowling would still be my number 1 choice!

– Cheok An Ting, 2F

Impactful, memorable, euphoria — reminiscing this amazing team never fails to put a smile on my face. Joining this family has probably been one of the best decisions I have made here in Mayflower. Our coaches strongly believe that adopting a growth mindset and having an undying passion will enable us to achieve our goals. My teammates across the cohorts were congenial and supportive, laughing and crying together, always cheering each other on. Not to mention, our CCA teachers-in-charge prioritise our mental and physical well-being, often going the extra mile to check in with us. Empathy has been a value that I hold close to my heart as a leader. Such an attribute allowed me to become a better leader. Leadership allowed me to recognise that in every problem, there lies a seed of success. My 4 years with this team have been an insanely rewarding experience! I would never trade it for the world.

Basketball is quite fun and I felt good playing my first match.

I felt that covid has disrupted our progress in learning the game. However, my team and I are glad that we were able to play the InterSchool games one last time before we graduate.

Personally, I feel that the Football CCA has taught me a lot of things. My Football CCA has not only taught me technical skills and strategy, but also the discipline needed to play the sport. I have played football for years and I have developed a very strong connection to it. The CCA sessions have also allowed me to bond with like-minded friends and thoroughly enjoy it.

TAEKONDO

When I first joined Taekwondo, I only wanted to be fit and strong. But Taekwondo taught me many important values that can be used in my daily life. Now, I want to be strong in my character and train hard to achieve my best in taekwondo.

When we first joined the CCA as secondary one students, our captains at that time taught us resilience and empathy. They were determined to bring out the best in us. Their efforts and commitment towards the CCA inspired us to carry on their legacy which in turn led us to aim to become CCA leaders. As Taekwondo Captain and Vice-captain, we aspire to bring excellence to our team and let them experience the same joy of learning as we did in the past.

During my time with Mayflower Football, I had various memorable experiences with friends and teachers. We are always taught the importance of values such as discipline, respect, empathy and more. I have bonded well with my teammates through drills and competitions. We learnt to work hard together, support and encourage one another. This is a great CCA to be in, as it has an excellent environment of inclusivity and acceptance. I learned a lot from the sessions and I will never forget my experience here.

NPCC

NPCC is a really enjoyable CCA with many games and activities. Even though the foot drills can be quite tiring, the company makes the sessions more enjoyable.

INFOCOMM CLUB

I learned how to use the audio system of the control room, theatrette, and Parade Square. I also learned about photography and coding, which are interesting. I like being on Photography duty during school events. Although coding is difficult, it is interesting and I look forward to getting new skills at my CCA.

Why Not You?

My journey in NPCC has been a long, and fruitful one. I’ve had many good experiences and learning opportunities, with the highlight being the .22 Revolver shoot. It was exhilarating, scary but enjoyable – Febio George, 4J

SCOUTS

After one and a half years in scouts, I have learnt many skills that I can apply to different activities such as backwoodsman and hiking. Overall, I am proud to be a member of scouts.

Scouts nurtured me to be a better leader and gave me the courage to face challenges. I thoroughly enjoyed the bonding sessions with my peers and have gained a myriad of skill sets. Through the CCA, I have discovered my strengths and weaknesses.

I think it’s fun when we bond across different levels. It was interesting learning how to put our drawings on the storyboard and turn them into a video with animations. I look forward to being on duty with juniors so I can hone my on-site photography skills while juniors can take the chance to train. It is meaningful to help out at events.

MAYFLOWER YEARBOOK: LOOKING AHEAD

Every year, the Mayflower Publicity Team adds a refreshing twist to the annual yearbook that reflects the currency of the academic year. Last year, we commemorated the 40th anniversary with a flashback to our history. This year, we welcome the transition from the traditional hardcopy yearbook to a digital one.

After careful consideration, we decided to make the switch, largely due to the eco-friendly option it offers. We thought about the benefits of physical space saved on our shelves (no more dusting when spring cleaning!) and the number of pages - and therefore trees - saved. More importantly, we considered the larger impact a digital yearbook would have, we could reach Mayflowerians far and wide, not just our current staff and students. Everyone will be provided with a glimpse of what Mayflower stands for at present! Of course, as you have seen, the digital realm also opens up opportunities for interactive pages as well.

So here we are with our first online digital yearbook aimed to capture life at Mayflower in 2022. We hope that you enjoy navigating the pages, on whichever device you prefer and from wherever you are, as much as we enjoyed bringing them to you.
