(1-4) Students Return to In-Person Learning Before Recent Stay at Home Guidelines For months, Mayfield worked with government and health officials to prepare our school for students to return to campus. Under the “limited in-person services provision” we were thrilled to welcome Kindergarten students on Monday, November 9. Mayfield submitted and was granted the TK-2 waiver allowing first and second-graders to join their classmates on campus. In response to an increase in COVID-19 cases and new guidelines, all students returned to remote learning on December 8.

(5-7) Traditions, Explorations & Gratefulness A sixth-grade Elf tradition is reimagined for remote learning; third-graders study Galileo and record observations in Night Sky journals, and students pen letters to active military veterans as part of MJS’s Week of Gratitude.

5 (3-4) Leading With Purpose Helps Build Longstanding Bonds Heading a School Family is one of the most anticipated responsibilities for an MJS eighth grader. Consisting of one student from each grade beginning in the first grade, School Families meet on Friday mornings to pray, share announcements, collaborate on projects and more.

Winter 2020

Service Connects Us Reach Out has always been an essential part of what the MJS motto – Actions not Words – means to all of us. From making treats and collecting towels for the Humane Society in Kindergarten to visiting with and making weighted blankets for students at Villa Esperanza in fourth-grade, every year at MJS, students are given the opportunity to make meaningful connections with charitable organizations in our community. Even in this unusual year, the benefits truly outweigh the challenges, especially as thinking about others never fails to remind us to be grateful, and working together for good (even at a safe distance) connects us.

Mayfield’s Class of 2021 forged ahead with Reach Out efforts as soon as school started. With creative thinking and care, they held a modified Harvest Festival to kick off fundraising. An amazing raffle, online activities, drive-thru games, and enthusiastic trunks or treats provided a day of celebration and a start to a year of service. The Class also declared a Week of Gratitude in November starting on Veterans Day with a necessity drive for Operation Gratitude, which works to forge strong bonds between Americans and the Military and First Responders. The eighth-graders also led their school families to write thank you letters to mail to active military at home and abroad. Learn more by visiting ‘Today@MJS’ at www.mayfieldjs.org.
