Meet Mayfield

Our students are everything.

Meet Christina Class of 2030

Curious and outgoing, Christina looks forward to coming to school every day. With a ready smile or spontaneous hug for those she meets, it isn’t surprising she has many close friends. Christina loves to learn; she enjoys writing and art and is inspired by the interaction with teachers and fellow students. Tennis is her passion outside of school, and Christina is often on a tennis court practicing with her brother or playing in a tournament. You may also find her dancing – staying active makes her happy!

MEET MAYFIELD JUNIOR SCHOOL

Meet our students. Confident, curious, and passionate, they love coming to school every day. Meet our teachers. Innovative, collaborative, and caring, they inspire their students to love learning. As a Holy Child school, Mayfield Junior School embraces the development of the integrated, whole person. Everything is learning.

We invite you to meet Mayfield. A bright and joyful spirit fills our classrooms and courtyards. We look forward to sharing our school with you!

OUR PROGRAM

In the mid-19th century, Cornelia Connelly, founder of Holy Child Schools, profoundly stated that we must “educate for the wants of the age.” It was her belief, in a constantly changing world that we must respond to each child as a whole person, encouraging, teaching, and helping them become the best person that they can be for today and tomorrow. Her wisdom and vision were generations ahead of her time. Today those same needs and concepts are more relevant than ever. Our students become inspired leaders with:

CURIOUS MINDS

Our students are active participants in their education. The academic program encourages meaningful and relevant connections and inspires an enduring enthusiasm for learning.

CONFIDENT VOICES

At Mayfield, students build the skills to listen for understanding, collaborate, and communicate with assuredness and expression. Whole child education inherently supports and encourages finding one’s voice to advocate for self and others.

CREATIVE SPIRITS

Opportunities for exploration and self-expression help students discover and share their unique gifts and potential.

OPEN HEARTS

Mindfulness, empathy, and a growth mindset are fully integrated into the curriculum. Faith formation provides a foundation for a personal spiritual journey and students develop compassion and perspective through service opportunities at every grade level.

Meet Cole Class

of 2030

From the moment he opens his eyes in the morning, Cole gives 100%. He is always willing to try new things. Sing a solo in the Christmas Concert? Sure. Play a hot dog on stage? Why not. Confident and caring, he loves spending time with his family and is a great friend. Baseball is a passion. Reading, music, cooking, bikes, roller blades are just a few of the things that keep him busy. And he can really dance. Whatever life throws his way, Cole’s got the moves.

MISSION

Meet Jeff & Oscar

Class of 1996 and Class of 2032

As a student at Mayfield in the 1990s, Jeff never imagined being back on campus to watch his son, Oscar, on stage in the Kindergarten Nativity Play or to experience Blue & White Day together. Jeff knows good things often improve, and Mayfield is one of those good things. He hopes the motto, Actions not Words, will influence Oscar’s life as it has his. His son is thriving with the caring teachers and inspired whole-child program. Best of all, Jeff loves seeing Oscar enjoy every minute.

Applications for financial assistance are accepted beginning in November.

Meet JUSTIN

Design and Engineering

Justin Velez appreciates the dynamic of a maker space. Managing a space that accommodates a long and everevolving list of activities and elevates design thinking means every day is different, and new challenges arise - good creative challenges. Helping to plan the stages of a project with possible outcomes and supporting the students throughout the process means Justin is often guide, facilitator, mentor, and even lifeguard at any given moment. He wouldn’t have it any other way.

Inspired by his grandmother, a teacher for fifty years, Justin believes the right encouragement can bring out the best in students. Things might get messy; the unexpected may happen – it’s all good.

Meet PAIGE

Class of 2026

Outgoing with a smile that doesn’t quit, Paige enjoys hanging out with her friends, playing sports, and adores sour candy. She is also confident, capable, and generous — a team player on the field or court and in the classroom. Paige believes one person can make a difference and is willing to advocate for herself and others. A champion in more ways than one.

ADMISSIONS FAQ

How can our family get to know Mayfield?

There are a variety of events to help you and your child get to know Mayfield. Our Open House Tours include short presentations from Mayfield administrators, a campus tour and classroom visits, and opportunities to talk with current students and parents. We host a coffee at our Head of School’s house for parents inquiring about kindergarten in the fall, and applicants meet teachers and other students at Kindergarten Playdates and Grades 1-8 Shadow Days. In addition, we invite interested families to attend several activities and events such as Morning Prayer and the Harvest Festival.

How many students are enrolled in kindergarten?

Is admission possible in all grade levels?

Our main entry point is kindergarten. We enroll 54 students in kindergarten each year, which is divided into 3 classrooms of 18 students with 2 full time teachers in each classroom. New enrollments in grades 1 to 8 are based on attrition. Most years each grade level welcomes new students.

What is the age requirement for a kindergartener?

Applicants for kindergarten should be 5 years of age by September 1 of the enrollment year.

What if we are not Catholic?

Mayfield Junior School welcomes applicants of all faiths and beliefs. Approximately 50% of our students are baptized Catholic.

How do I apply for financial assistance?

We are committed to providing opportunities for a Mayfield education to all students regardless of financial situation. Please refer to the tuition and financial aid brochure and details on the website.

Will applying for financial assistance influence my child’s application for admission?

Admissions decisions are made without knowledge of a family’s financial circumstances. They are separate processes, and financial assistance applications are not shared with the admissions office.

Do you offer after school care?

Yes. MJS Extended Care offers enrichment classes, homework clinics, and supervised care from the end of the academic day to 6pm for an additional cost.

Have more questions? Please contact our admissions office. We are happy to answer any questions you may have.

Meet SARA

Lower School Science

Even in the flurry of activity that fills the Lower School Science Lab, a peaceful embrace presides, guiding student enthusiasm, encouraging connection, channeling wonder, and inspiring discovery. Sara Crepaux has taught science to grades K-4 at Mayfield for sixteen years. Patient and thoughtful, Sara was drawn to teaching because of her grandmother’s experience as an educator in a one-room schoolhouse, and those stories still inspire her today. Whether observing clouds, experimenting with states of matter, or exploring the life cycle of plants and animals, Sara seeks moments that engage the senses and revel in the magic of science and the natural world. Wide-eyed and ready, her students are always eager to take it all in.

Meet DOUGLAS

Class of 2027

Soft-spoken and studious, you might not guess Douglas loves adventure and trying new things. White water rafting, mountain biking, maybe one day flying a fighter jet - Challenges make him brave. He knows it’s about hard work, skill, and believing in yourself. Especially in school. Examining the human experience through history and literature in humanities class can be complex. With the support of a good teacher, enlightening. Adventure is everywhere.

Meet ELSA

Kindergarten Associate Teacher

Elsa Lazo knows firsthand the magic of the kindergarten year.

The classroom is a busy, welcoming place filled with curiosity and discovery, and she is grateful to be a part of each child’s growth from September to June and even beyond. She will continue to watch them grow on stage in grade-level productions, when they return to the kindergarten classrooms as 6th graders for the KPals program, and she is especially looking forward to celebrating her first class when they graduate in 2030. As the saying goes, it takes a village. Elsa is inspired by the dedicated kindergarten team and supportive Mayfield community, which share her belief in teaching kindness, respect, and compassion. Kindergarten is a great place to start!

Meet ELOISE Class of 2030

Talking with Eloise is always a treat. She is thoughtful and serious, as if she observes life with careful intent. When Eloise smiles, her face lights up - revealing a joyful confidence few her age possess. It seems challenges inspire her, and experience grounds her. Whether learning to chop vegetables with precision or developing her public speaking skills, Eloise is all in. In friendship, it is the same. She is a good friend; fairness is important to Eloise, and she will step up and speak out if needed. It might be a bit scary, but like her command of the cutting board - she’s got this.

Reflecting on her years at Mayfield, she knows good teachers make all the difference. “Life as a student is multifaceted, with many joys and hardships that come with the preparation for life that school gives you.” Sophia writes. “Of these joys, one of the biggest is teachers.” Sage is curious and thoughtful, fond of birds, and is a quick study, often winning at board games she’s played for the first time. She finished her first year of middle school, excelling as a member of the MJS speech team. With the support of the Mayfield community, possibilities make her brave. Sophia and Sage share wisdom and resilience beyond their years - like the birds Sage loves, for these sisters, the sky’s the limit.

HIGH SCHOOL AND STUDENT SUCCESS

A Mayfield Junior School education comes full circle when the time comes to send our eighth graders off to high school and out into the world.

Mayfield graduates are accepted to and attend the top high schools within the greater Los Angeles area and beyond. The school takes an active role in assisting with the application process and works in partnership with students and parents to help each student make thoughtful, well-informed decisions.

• Annual High School Options Night: A community event held on Mayfield’s campus that brings representatives from independent schools from all over the West coast, the Southwest region and even the East coast together to share information about their schools.

• High School Guidance: In the fall of the eighth-grade year, students and their parents may choose to schedule a guidance conference. Students are provided information and support to help make informed decisions.

• Application Process Information Night: Details the logistics and timing of the application process and students receive information on HSPT/ISEE test prep courses that are available in the area.

• School visits: Both off-campus visits and on-campus special assemblies are arranged with local schools.

• Interview Skills: Coaching for interviews is available.

In keeping with our mission, the goal of the high school application process is to ensure the placement of each student in a school environment best suited to their academic strengths, personal interests and individual needs.

Meet Lydia Middle School

Math

Lydia Flores was born to teach. Coming from a family of educators, it’s in her DNA and, perhaps more importantly, in her heart. Lydia is continuously motivated by her students. Math can be challenging, and understanding that everyone learns differently, she is patient, generous with her time and creative.

Helping her students find those golden moments of clarity and build confidence in their abilities never gets old. Interactive and fun, Lydia’s classes encourage a growth mindset in a safe, trust-in-the-process atmosphere. Golden moments, indeed.

Meet MINA

Class of 2025

Boundless curiosity is Mina’s strength. Everything is interesting —everything is an opportunity to learn. If not engrossed in a book, she might be exploring a new hobby or craft, honing her volleyball skills, delving into a complex role for a grade-level play, or developing her talent for speech and public speaking. Mina never stops learning, discovering, experimenting. Life’s menu is vast. With curiosity and courage, she’ll take one of everything, please.

of 2027

Meet ALEX Class

Alex is destined for greatness. An entrepreneur in the making, it isn’t surprising that math is his favorite subject. Solving problems gives him a sense of accomplishment; challenges inspire him. His best day starts with a morning bun, followed by working on his math skills and a game or two, and maybe ends with time at a trampoline park. Although independent, relationships mean a lot to Alex. He enjoys being with his friends, is a good teammate, and appreciates his family; their support encourages him to try new things. For Alex, it’s about making the most of every day - find some adventure, laugh a little, learn a lot, and if you make it to the trampoline park, jump a little higher.

Meet Kylie & Leanne

Class of 2027 and Class of 2031

Sisters Kylie and Leanne each have a creative streak. Energetic, artistic, and a little bookish, Leanne loves art and music classes at school, would have sushi every day for lunch if she could, and is a big fan of funny movies. Kylie spends most of her free time sketching or painting and has a keen eye for detail. She dreams of becoming an architect one day focusing on sustainable design with a positive environmental impact. Both Kylie and Leanne appreciate their friends and teachers at Mayfield and look forward to coming to school. Like many active kids, however, they also love the snooze button! More time to dream!

Meet Nichole Humanities

Department Chair

Nichole Mercado realized early in life that sharing one’s time and talent with future generations can have a tremendous impact. She had good role models. Her parents modeled hard work and the importance of giving back, lessons that influence her every day. With sixteen years of experience, ten at Mayfield, Nichole is grateful for the support and community of her colleagues and truly loves being an advocate and cheerleader for her students. She often says middle school kids are her people. Maybe because of her willingness to be herself and give of herself, Nichole has a talent for seeing her students for who they are, for being understanding and flexible, but not without expectations. Sounds like a teacher.

Meet Ben & Joey

Class of 2026 and Class of 2029

You can tell Ben and Joey are brothers. Besides sharing similar physical traits, they both like to laugh, especially at the antics of their dog, Maple; love their mother’s cooking, and look forward to coming to school. Getting to know them, however, reveals two unique individuals. Ben is curious, a bit serious, and mature for his age. Knowledge gives him confidence. World history is a passion. Observant and thoughtful, Joey thrives in math and art. He is an active kid who loves playing basketball. If a sport involves a ball, Joey will excel at it. Although somewhat mischievous, he is a caring, loyal friend. He also knows he can do anything with his big brother by his side. That makes all the difference.

Meet Scott

Coach and PE Teacher

As a member of Mayfield’s physical education team, Scott Salsman has the unique opportunity to teach every child at Mayfield. For Scott, it’s a privilege. Whether creating new games for kindergarteners to develop fine motor skills or nurturing talent and perseverance in team sports, he wants to help each of his students thrive in multiple ways. Scott credits his viewpoint to the tremendous role models in his life - those teachers who took the time and care to look beyond the immediate toward the greater good. In just two years at MJS, Scott’s positive presence has already made an impact. His teachers would be proud.
