Dear Mayfield Community, These are truly exciting and historic times for Mayfield Junior School. I love the cover photo on this issue, taken at our Groundbreaking event in June, with smiling Mayfield students excited about the future of our campus. Today, with progress well underway, we all look forward to the full completion of Phase I of our campus master plan, which includes a new athletic field, Center for Teaching and Learning, Arts and Media Annex, playground, and morning prayer area. Information about our campus master plan and our capital campaign, Learning Elevated: The Campaign for the Whole Child, has been in the mail. This campaign is indeed building a better Mayfield with its focus on our students and our remarkable Holy Child/Whole Child programs. We have funded the beginning of Phase I of our master plan (a subterranean parking garage with 121 parking spots and an artificial turf field up top) through the quiet phase of our campaign. During this quiet phase, we raised almost $9 million from about 50 donors in less than eight months. Thank you to our Campaign Chair, Brad King P ’17, ’20, ’22, for helping us to inspire these transformational early gifts. Our momentum is strong, and I am confident that we will quickly fund the completion of Phase I during the campaign’s public phase. This Maypoll contains our Annual Report and celebrates our community. Mayfield has always been about the people—students, parents/guardians, faculty, staff, alumni, alumni parents, and grandparents. Last spring, we completed our Holy Child Network of Schools Mission Effectiveness process, which included a collaborative community-written report and a visit from a team of Holy Child educators from across the country. Their final summary written during their visit was very positive. They wrote, “Throughout the visit, we witnessed the vibrant whole child approach that is at the heart of a Mayfield Junior School education. From current students, teachers, staff, and Board of Trustees members to alums and parents, it was clear to the committee that all constituents cherish a Holy Child educational model that values the dignity and uniqueness of every human being and seeks to explore, develop, and celebrate the unique gifts of every student. We were impressed by the school’s strong faith life, inclusivity, and creative academic program, and by the way the Holy Child mission is intentionally prioritized by the MJS community.” I love that they saw us for who we truly are! The 2022-2023 donors we celebrate in this issue represent confidence in our mission and program. These gifts help to provide important resources for the operation of the school as we continue to flourish. Thank you to those of you who are long-time donors (perhaps members of the Cornelia Connelly Society) and thank you to those who have just begun your support of Mayfield Junior School through our Annual Fund, Learning Elevated capital campaign, and other opportunities. All of you make a difference. Thank you! Go Mustangs! Joe Sciuto Head of School

Alumni Giving We are thankful for the generosity and spirit of our Mayfield alumni and their heartfelt investment in our school’s future.
Blue and White Day of Giving May 19, 2023
MAYPOLL
Helen Forve O’Leary ’41
Mayfield’s 2nd annual Blue and White Day of Giving was held May 19, 2023. This digital campaign encouraged alumni to contribute to the Annual Fund to support either the Blue Team (odd grad years) or the White Team (even grad years). The competition was fierce as donors responded to email messages and challenges on social media, all while current MJS students participated in the relay, tug-of-war, and other events for Blue and White Day on Spirit Field.
1950s
In the end, the White Team showed the most Mustang spirit and won, supporting programs that inspire future students as they learn, play, grow and pray together.

Mahalo Mayfield: A Night in Old Hawaii Mayfield parents, alumni, and friends enjoyed a tropical evening on May 6 for the 2023 Benefit, Mahalo Mayfield: A Night in Old Hawaii. The West Pavilion and Spirit Field were transformed with lush foliage and bright florals; a huge tiki bar served up Mayfield Mai Tais while the smooth sounds of ukulele drifted across campus. Benefit co-chairs Kelley Terrazas ’95 and Marie Levenick and their event committee, including Décor Chair Brigid Brahos ’78, brought the aloha spirit to the Mayfield community during an otherwise rainy spring. The 420 guests in attendance wore sundresses and chinos, and many sported our limited edition Reyn Spooner X Mayfield collaboration polo shirt. Each year, the Benefit raises funds for Mayfield’s Endowment and a Paddle Raise supports a special, designated cause. The event raised more than $175,000 for Endowment and in addition, donors raised their paddles to give over $80,000 to the Gill Fund for Professional Development to support faculty and staff training and continued education. Unique to this year’s Benefit was the official announcement of Learning Elevated: The Campaign for the Whole Child. This much anticipated plan to develop the Mayfield campus was unveiled with a beautiful video presentation followed by sparklers and a champagne toast led by Head of School Joe Sciuto and Campaign Chair Brad King.

Mayfield Junior School accepts many kinds of gifts, including:
• Cash Current cash gifts are deductible for income tax purposes to the full extend allowed by law and may be made with cash, check, or credit card.
• Appreciated Securities A gift of appreciated stock or other capital assets can result in significant tax savings. You may be able to obtain a tax deduction for the full market value of the gift and avoid paying tax on the gain.

Building a Better Mayfield New Expanded Parking Complex and Mayfield Mustangs Playing Field: Construction Update Phase One construction is well underway. A groundbreaking event in early June officially kicked off this historical milestone with a special blessing by Father Tony Marti, OFM, Cap., MJS Board of Trustee member and St. Francis High School President, and a land acknowledgement by the Gomez Family honoring the Tongva Tribe recognizing the land’s past, present, and future. Following the field excavation, construction crews have made incredible progress. Currently, we anticipate the new parking complex and Mustangs playing field will be completed in May 2024.

Board Notes At the final meeting for the 2022-2023 school year, Jason Bridge P ’23,’23 retired his role as Board Chair and passed the torch to incoming Chair Jennifer Allen P ’18, ’21, ’28. The entire Board of Trustees expressed gratitude and praise for Jason’s leadership and counsel as the school navigated the return to campus following the COVID-19 pandemic, and set the stage for the future of Mayfield with the launch of Learning Elevated: the Campaign for the Whole Child. Jason will remain on the Board through the 2023-2024 academic year. In addition, retiring trustees Michael Albrecht, Ryan Brist, Keith Thorell, and Rob Tolleson were recognized for their service, expertise, and fellowship.
My family’s Mayfield journey began 14 years ago. When we started with our oldest son, Will (who is now a sophomore in college!), I was overwhelmed by the joy and positive energy that MJS created each day through the students, faculty and staff. That feeling only grew when Dylan, my now-high school junior, entered kindergarten. And it continues now with my 4th grader, Bode, who looks forward to going to school every day. To me, it is a rare gift to offer a child an environment of joy alongside a top-notch education. All three of my children thrived with the right proportion of academic challenge and positive reinforcement. At MJS, they refer to it as Holy Child education. In the Allen family, we call it Mayfield Magic.
Announcing Jennifer Allen as new Chair of the Board of Trustees Jennifer Allen has been appointed the new chair of Mayfield’s Board of Trustees beginning in the 2023-2024 school year. Jennifer joined the Board in 2019.
My strong connection to our school and this community led me to serve a higher purpose here. As chairwoman of the Board of Trustees, I have the pleasure of working with a dedicated Board, faculty and staff, and I look forward to helping Mayfield navigate important decisions during my term. Mostly, I am excited to engage our incredible community – because we cannot take giants leaps forward without you. Over the years, there have been some tremendous highs in our school history. Yet I believe that there has never been a more exciting time to be a part of this special school. Our campus transformation is well underway. With a brand-new parking garage, fabulous new (and level!) turf field, and the new, innovative Center for Teaching and Learning, our facilities will align with the student-centered academic program already in place. I am thrilled to be part of this incredible journey. Go Mustangs! Sincerely, Jenn Allen

Rock Lei William Hayden ’83 As an alum, parent of alum, current parent, and son of former Board Chair Stan Hayden, Bill Hayden’s connection to Mayfield runs deep. He currently serves as Senior Vice President at Majestic Realty and is responsible for the acquisition, development, leasing, and asset management of projects in master-planned business parks in California, Arizona, and Nevada. Bill graduated from Santa Clara University with a Bachelor of Science degree and earned his master’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Southern California Marshall School of Business, with an emphasis in real estate and finance. He and his wife, Lindsay ’93, are the parents of Will, who graduated in 2022, and Matthew ’26. Since 2018, Bill has served on both the Advancement and Facilities and Technology Board Committees at Mayfield.
Rock Lei is the Co-founder and Chief Revenue Officer of ENS Security, a national security surveillance company. As a first-generation immigrant from China, Rock earned his master’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Denver. At ENS Security, Rock is responsible for leading the revenue strategy and execution for the entire company, overseeing sales, marketing, and business development. He has successfully managed and led a team of about 100 inside sales reps in 11 different branches, achieving consistent sales revenue and margin growth every year. With a passion for art collecting, Rock serves as a committee member of the Contemporary Art Acquisition Group and Modern & Contemporary Art Council of Los Angeles County Art Museum. He and his wife Anita Feng have two boys at Mayfield, Leo ’29 and Raphael ’30. He is an active volunteer at MJS, serving on the Facilities and Technology Committee and the Learning Elevated Campaign Committee.
My tenure as Board Chair was slated to start in the summer of 2020, with a primary focus on the upcoming campaign, Learning Elevated. The COVID-19 pandemic threw us a curveball. It was an ’all hands on deck’ emergency, and our focus remained on the physical, social and emotional wellbeing of our children, our faculty and staff, and our MJS community. I remain in awe of our faculty and staff and their commitment to our children. What a precious gift we give our children and families when we decide to join the MJS community. There has been no better gift Evy and I could have given our children in their entire lives. I truly mean that. We will forever be grateful to the faculty and staff of MJS for helping our kids, our family, and our community emerge from the pandemic with thriving social-emotional and physical health. There are always blessings, even in the worst of times, and upon reflection of the last few years as Board Chair, I can only think of how grateful I am for all of you. My wife, Evy, and I want to take this opportunity to simply say Thank You! I believe we, as a community, have emerged stronger and that our Mission-based Holy Child Education stood up to the test when we needed it the most.
With two Class of 2023 graduates, we are no longer at the school, and I am not sure who misses it more: Evy and I or our twins. To MJS families, you and your children are in great hands. The board is strong, school leadership is strong, and confidence is high. Graduates attend the top high schools and then to the best colleges, all while being challenged academically and nurtured as a whole child. MJS is in good financial health, and the institutional reputation is stronger than ever. We have all this strength and vision for future growth because we have benefited from the dividends of the past 90+ years. Our community’s confidence impressed us with the magnitude and the pace of fundraising during the quiet phase of Learning Elevated: The Campaign for the Whole Child. Even more impressive was the collaboration involved in implementing Phase One. We were able to raise funds, get permits through the city, secure a loan (in the middle of a banking crisis), and break ground all in the last 12 months. I am excited for the future of Mayfield Junior School. Jason Bridge Chair, Board of Trustees 2020-2023 MAYPOLL

Mayfield’s Recommitment to the Goals for Schools of the Holy Child Every six years, each school within the Holy Child Network of Schools participates in a self-study process surrounding the Goals for Schools of the Holy Child called Mission Effectiveness. Mayfield Junior School began our fifth Mission Effectiveness self-study in June of 2022 with the theme Mission Possible. Following the submission of a written report, created with the input of all members of our school community, a team of Holy Child educators from other Network schools visited in the spring of 2023 to complete the process. Visitors to our campus, with the insight and purpose Holy Child educators possess, always provide a unique opportunity to see the school with fresh eyes. Within the vibrant activity of this busy campus, it is the little things, those thousand moments that happen in a day, that make working and learning at Mayfield joyful. While the self-study allows the school the opportunity to reflect and evaluate how strongly the Goals are incorporated into our daily life, our community appreciates and becomes stronger through this wonderful time of celebration, renewal, and recommitment to what makes us Holy Child.
Throughout the visit, we witnessed the vibrant whole child approach that is at the heart of a Mayfield Junior School education. From current students, teachers, staff, and board members to alums and parents, it was clear to the committee that all constituents cherish a Holy Child educational model that values the dignity and uniqueness of every human being and seeks to explore, develop, and celebrate the unique gifts of every student. ~ Visiting Committee Reflection

Goals for Schools of the Holy Child Goal 1: Holy Child Schools foster a faith commitment
that leads to a joyous personal relationship with God in addressing the realities of the world. Faith Journey
Prayer guides school life. Our community actively participates in masses, prayer services, and fellowship, such as School Families and the Family Heritage Fair. Opportunities for spiritual growth, cultivating empathy, and purposeful reflection are woven into all aspects of the program and curriculum.
Goal 2: Holy Child Schools live, learn, and worship as a dynamic Catholic community. Inclusive Community
A joyful spirit fills our campus. School events such as Morning Prayer, art and music performances, athletic games, Family Movie Night, annual Benefit, and Family Heritage Fair support and build upon the strength of our community. Our diverse community enriches our perspective. A warm and welcoming atmosphere supports the growth of our students as caring and compassionate individuals.
Goal 3: Holy Child Schools offer an intellectually
challenging, innovative, and creative program of study that develops academic excellence, encourages curiosity, and instills the joy of learning. Life-Long Learners
Meeting the wants of the age. Mayfield provides a studentcentered, creative program of study designed to instill a love of learning and develop skills with the future in mind. A commitment to the whole child addresses all aspects of the person: the spiritual, the intellectual, the creative, and the athletic.
Goal 4: Holy Child Schools promote Catholic social
teaching in every facet of life as we carry out our motto, “Actions not Words.” Global Citizens
Teach kindness, compassion, and understanding. Mayfield continues to foster a climate of dignity and reverence for all. We align our Holy Child mission with the important work of diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice (DEIJ). Reach Out has always been an essential part of what the MJS motto – Actions not Words – means to all of us. From making treats and collecting towels for the Humane Society in Kindergarten to making and delivering lunches to the guests at the St. Francis Center in the middle school, every year at MJS, students work together to make meaningful connections with charitable organizations in our community.
Goal 5: Holy Child Schools create a learning climate based on trust and reverence for the dignity and uniqueness of each person. Respect
Children of God. Mayfield recognizes our differences make us stronger and emphasizes the individual potential of every student. Leadership, maker fairs, multiple athletic teams, public speaking, and performance opportunities reveal and showcase unique gifts and talents. Differentiated learning is recognized and supported by Learning Center specialists. Social-emotional development is prioritized, and a growth mindset is encouraged. Our community’s multicultural heritage is embraced with opportunities to share and celebrate throughout the year.
Goal 6: Holy Child Schools promote the personal
growth and development of all who participate in the life of the school. Thrive
Whole Child. Integral to Mayfield’s program and daily experience is the focus on the development of the whole person. A safe and supportive environment allows inquiry, creativity, and growth. Whether speaking at Morning Prayer, embracing design thinking in science, or collaborating with classmates on stage or the field, opportunity is prevalent, relationships are prioritized, and self-discovery is encouraged. Full-time counselors are dedicated to mental health and supporting the well-being of all students. Learning Specialists support teachers in all grades. A middle school Advisory program develops skills in social-emotional resourcefulness, digital citizenship, and executive functioning.
Goal 7: Holy Child Schools ensure the continuation
and growth of Holy Child mission and philosophy in the school. Future Focus
Next generation. With an eye towards the future, thoughtful planning across our community has Mayfield well-positioned to continue to meet the wants of the age. Mayfield’s continued faithfulness to fulfilling Cornelia Connelly’s vision of caring for and developing the Whole Child is paramount, particularly in our post-pandemic world. Our commitment to the Master Plan and Learning Elevated: The Campaign for the Whole Child supports the continual improvement of our school.
*The Goals for School of the Holy Child were updated in 2023 with input from all Holy Child Network Schools.

Alumni Lives Mayfield Junior School alumni find their passion and true potential in many meaningful and dynamic fields and careers. The alumni featured here draw from their Holy Child experience, continue to love learning, and stay true to their unique gifts and perspectives.
Meet Jacqueline Jabarian Geragos ’08 2023-2025 Alumni Council Chair In June, MJS was pleased to announce Jacqueline Jabarian Geragos ’08 as the next Alumni Council Chair. Jacqueline has served on the Alumni Council since 2020, including as Secretary during the 2021-2023 term. She will serve as Alumni Council Chair through June 2025.
Sometimes magic happens in challenging times. When the pandemic required the world to stay home, Jacqueline made plans. A COVID cleaning project in her parent’s home kept her busy, but it also inspired her. She realized taking the chaotic to composed brought her joy. In 2023, Jacqueline Jabarian Geragos ’08, Mayfield Junior School’s new Alumni Council Chair, is a busy mom and business owner. Those pandemic plans have become a successful home organization business called The JAJA Effect, and she couldn’t be happier. Jacqueline admits she has always liked cleaning and organizing, “There are pictures of me mopping and organizing my Barbie dream house!” but she never dreamed it would become her career. After high school, Jacqueline attended the University of Southern California (USC), earning her degree in communications, and straight out of college was hired by a top Los Angeles public relations firm. Everything seemed to be going well, except something was missing. “I worked as a publicist on red carpet events, and it felt right,” she explained. “Then, one day, I realized many of the staff were married to their jobs. I wanted more.” Stepping away from the fast-paced life in the entertainment industry, Jacqueline started working for her father in wholesale jewelry. When the pandemic hit extra time provided a new opportunity. Still living at home, she used the time to go from room to room, cleaning and organizing her parent’s home. She created a schedule, coordinated systems, and maximized storage. It felt good, and her fiancé, now husband, 32

suggested she consider making it a career. The JAJA Effect was born. Sitting for this interview with her son on her lap, Jacqueline was introspective. “I feel good about the route I took and where I am now. With my own company, I can control the amount of work I have, which is great because I can take more time to give back and volunteer here on the Alumni Council and in the community. I can better navigate the time that I have.” When she is not organizing homes and businesses across Southern California, Jacqueline loves to give her time to helping others. She has worked with the Armenian Missionary Association of America (AMAA) for many years, providing aid to families and children in Armenia. The association provides basic needs and education opportunities, and Jacqueline loves that Armenians are helping Armenians. She has met some amazing women and their families who share her compassion and willingness to make a difference. Being back on campus as Alumni Council Chair also brings her joy. Jacqueline is excited to support the school she loves. “I am so appreciative of the education and experience I had at Mayfield Junior School. I believe so much of who I am and what I do comes back to my time here at MJS.”
Meet Patrick Liddy ’12
Patrick Liddy ’12 was never good at team sports. In fact, as a kid, his youth soccer coach kindly recommended to his father that he try something else. Patrick chose cars. From Go Cart to Radical racing, it didn’t take long for success to come his way. 2018 was his big year: Patrick, who had graduated from Loyola High School in 2016, was studying pre-law, philosophy, and English at the University of California, Santa Barbara, when he got a call from a friend who worked on a team for Lamborghini. They were looking for a young driver for an opening round at an upcoming race. It was his first time racing in this kind of car at this level, and he won. Lamborghini invited him into their young driver program, and he’s never looked back. We had a chance to talk with Patrick this summer when he was back in Los Angeles. He decided to move to Europe after racing for a couple of years, while he finished college. It was May 2020— He had a deal with Lamborghini and sponsorships in place, but with the uncertainty of international travel at the time, he wasn’t quite sure what would happen when he arrived in Rome. “With letters from Lamborghini in hand,” he told us, “I donned all my Lamborghini gear - hat, pants, jacket and got on the flight.” It was a good call, as security straight off the plane, “…looked at me said ‘oh, Lamborghini,’ stamped my passport and let me in.” Living in Italy and Monaco during the nine-month racing season was a great experience, and Patrick returns to Europe every year. As a Group GT3 (Cup Grand Touring Car) driver for Lamborghini, Patrick races all over the world, assists in product testing and launch, works with engineers on drive development, and has gained business and marketing experience exploring sponsorship opportunities for his team. He recently participated in the launch of Lamborghini’s new off-road vehicle, the Huracán Sterrato, spending ten days out near Joshua Tree National Park doing testing and media promotion. He has also
consulted and assisted with stunt driving and sound for recent films about motorsports, including Gran Turismo. The question of speed inevitably came up, and Patrick admitted he’s driven over 200 MPH but not in the race car. “The speed in the race car is track dependent, and the skill comes from how late you can break in the corner and how much speed you can carry through it. It’s fine-tuning yourself and being at the car’s limit without going over it.” To prepare for races, Patrick meditates, and the team participates in guided stretches and brain work to boost reaction times. Once in the race, focus is critical, and the biggest obstacle is heat. “It can be 135F in the cockpit, and you are basically wearing fire-proof pajamas.” At home, Patrick admits he drives slowly and safely, although, like every young driver growing up in Los Angeles, he got early training for racing on the curves of the 110 North to Pasadena. He was at Mayfield for only 7th and 8th grade; however, is still close with many of his Mayfield friends. With his growing experience in the many sides of professional racing, Patrick has clear goals for the future. Joining the elite group of Formula 1 drivers is certainly one of them. Right now, he is focused on the next couple of years. “Continuing with the GT3 series this year will be fantastic, and next year, I hope to compete in the Asian Le Mans Series in Singapore, Abu Dhabi, and Dubai in a new prototype, the LMP2 car.” Formula 1 may be closer than he thinks. Meet Graham Pulliam ’94
Graham Pulliam ’94 has lived his adult life aligned with the two mottos he learned as a young man at Mayfield Junior School and Loyola High School. Mayfield’s motto, “Actions not words,” and Loyola’s “Men for and with Others” were demonstrated when he decided to join the United States Marines, when he volunteered to lead an Embedded Training Team (ETT) in Afghanistan and when he became a business owner in Los Angeles. Those ideals are still present in his ongoing work helping Afghan refugees and supporting veterans as they acclimate to civilian life and look for jobs. Graham has made decisions and acted with the welfare of others in his heart. Although his father had served in the Korean War, this selfdescribed “EMO kid who listened to music nobody liked and hung out in comic book stores,” never imagined the path he would take. Graham graduated from Loyola in 1998 and started the architecture program at the University of Southern California (USC). It never felt right, and with his father’s struggle with Parkinson’s disease escalating, he decided to work and continue his education at community college, eventually completing his undergraduate degree at Cal State Los Angeles. By this time, the Iraq War was intensifying, and Graham decided to join up. “I felt there were a lot of people in harm’s way,” he explained. That winter, he found himself at the Marine Corps Officer Candidate School (OCC) at Quantico. “I really didn’t think I would be in the Marines for that long - it is a 4-year commitment as an officer - but the work was so compelling.” Graham received orders for the 1st Reconnaissance Battalion, an elite unit down at Camp Pendleton, then volunteered to go to Afghanistan, joining a small team embedded with the Afghan Army. “It was the greatest job ever,” he said. “I worked with well-trained individuals who sought out the job and who really believed in the mission.” Graham’s team lived and worked with about 70-80 Afghan soldiers. “All our knowledge and capabilities combined with their knowledge of culture and country - it was the most effective thing I saw on the ground.” 34

In 2011, Graham married Brooke, his childhood crush, and returned to Afghanistan almost the next day as a Reconnaissance Company Commander. When he finished his service and returned to the United States, he worked for a tech start-up and continued his education, earning his MBA from UCLA Anderson School of Management. Partnering with a fellow former Marine, Graham started searching for a company to buy. He was motivated by a study that found the transition for veterans coming out of this war was often met with “an ocean of goodwill in a sea of apathy.” Graham said, “We were hoping to get back in the company commander seat in the private sector and hire vets.” The perfect opportunity never came through, and they were just about to level up when the pandemic hit. Working through the next few years as a controller, succession planner, and in business development, he decided to consider a franchise and found Paul Davis Restoration. Although he is busy with his family (Graham and Brooke have two young sons), and building his business, when Graham learned Holy Family Church in South Pasadena, their parish, was organizing a group to assist the Sharifs, an Afghan family seeking asylum, he immediately got involved. Graham joined a group of volunteers who have helped with childcare, provided transportation to ESL classes, and connected the Sharif family with organizations that offer legal support. Graham has employed the family patriarch at Paul Davis as his warehouse manager and does what he can along with another MJS alum, Chris Gibbons ’96, who manages mitigation for the business. Looking forward, Graham feels optimistic his new business will grow and give him more time to do more and give back. He’d like to help the Sharif family reach a more stable status and return to his plan to develop better networks for veterans seeking jobs. As a man of action, there is no doubt he will find a way.
35th Annual Maureen Shea Memorial Tennis Tournament After a three-year hiatus, we were thrilled to host the 35th Annual Maureen Shea Memorial Tennis Tournament. An energetic group of students, parents, and alumni took to the courts at Arroyo Seco Racquet Club on Sunday, May 21 for a full day of fun. Sixteen players participated in the Donna Martin Alumni Division that saw sibling pairs Lorna ’03 and Jack ’13 Baggott and Sarah ’21 and Matthew ’15 Leiva battle it out against friend and family duos that included Henry Tolleson ’19, Etienne Lanchantin ’22, Luke Garrity ’17, Bryan Lynch ’98, Alex Cook ’21, and Shea McConnell ’09. The Leivas took the honors as the 2023 Alumni Division champions. Tournament Director Jon Wood led a “Hit-for-Prizes” session during the lunch break, where participants scored vintage tournament swag and tennis accessories. In the afternoon, it was delightful to see current students in grades 5 through 8 play in the Maureen Shea Student Division, many of whom were participating for the first time. Partnering with a parent, students Eva Borncamp ’24, Hayden Heath ’25, and Chris Guerra ’26 (playing with mom Ashley Guerra ’85) eventually fell to finalists Spencer and Smith Sanderson ’26 and student duo Paolo McCarrey ’23 and Oberon Chu ’23. Later that evening, all the participants gathered with family and friends to cheer courtside during the final match of the Student Division, which took place on the clay tennis court at the home of Mrs. Mary Shea, Maureen’s mother. Following McCarrey and Chu’s victory, Head of School Joe Sciuto congratulated the group and thanked Mrs. Shea, along with four of her children and several grandchildren, for hosting the celebratory Pie ’n Burger dinner, as she has for all 35 years of the tournament.

Inez Berger ’48, SHCJ To say that Sister Inez Berger knew Mayfield Junior School is an understatement. The Holy Child spirit was present in her upbringing, education and, ultimately her vocation as a member of the Society of the Holy Child Jesus. Sister Inez entered the Mayfield School in the 7th grade, and with only six students in her class, graduated in 1948. As a devoted follower of Saint Therese, she always had a keen awareness of her deep love for God. “I was a shy girl, and I remember as a high school student at Mayfield, Mother Mary Wilfrid, who knew my love for St. Therese, took me to the Carmelite monastery one day so that I could see what it was like to be religious. That had a profound effect on my decision to join the Society.” That summer, she travelled the long trip by train to Rosemont, Pennsylvania, and entered the convent as a postulant with the Society of the Holy Child Jesus. As a postulant, Sr. Inez learned how to teach and her teaching career spanned a period of over 60 years taking her from Pasadena to Pennsylvania, to Oregon, and back to Pasadena. One of Sister’s greatest blessings was her beautiful ability to write in the classic art of calligraphy. She shared this talent with the Mayfield community by helping with lettering special certificates and awards, scribing the memorial book, and creating wonderful bulletin boards. This, along with her time on campus, was in her words, what “keeps me happy, and mindful of God’s grace.” Though she officially retired in 2002, Sister Inez spent nearly every school day on campus sharing her time and many gifts with the Mayfield community until she moved to an SHCJ residence in Rosemont, Pennsylvania in 2015. God called her home on April 19, 2023. MAYPOLL
