Mayfield’s Recommitment to the Goals for Schools of the Holy Child

Every six years, each school within the Holy Child Network of Schools participates in a self-study process surrounding the Goals for Schools of the Holy Child called Mission Effectiveness. Mayfield Junior School began our fifth Mission Effectiveness self-study in June of 2022 with the theme Mission Possible. Following the submission of a written report, created with the input of all members of our school community, a team of Holy Child educators from other Network schools visited in the spring of 2023 to complete the process. Visitors to our campus, with the insight and purpose Holy Child educators possess, always provide a unique opportunity to see the school with fresh eyes. Within the vibrant activity of this busy campus, it is the little things, those thousand moments that happen in a day, that make working and learning at Mayfield joyful. While the self-study allows the school the opportunity to reflect and evaluate how strongly the Goals are incorporated into our daily life, our community appreciates and becomes stronger through this wonderful time of celebration, renewal, and recommitment to what makes us Holy Child.

"Throughout the visit, we witnessed the vibrant whole child approach that is at the heart of a Mayfield Junior School education. From current students, teachers, staff, and board members to alums and parents, it was clear to the committee that all constituents cherish a Holy Child educational model that values the dignity and uniqueness of every human being and seeks to explore, develop, and celebrate the unique gifts of every student."

Goals for Schools of the Holy Child

Goal 1: Holy Child Schools foster a faith commitment that leads to a joyous personal relationship with God in addressing the realities of the world.

Faith Journey

Prayer guides school life. Our community actively participates in masses, prayer services, and fellowship, such as School Families and the Family Heritage Fair. Opportunities for spiritual growth, cultivating empathy, and purposeful reflection are woven into all aspects of the program and curriculum.

Goal 2: Holy Child Schools live, learn, and worship as a dynamic Catholic community.

Inclusive Community

A joyful spirit fills our campus. School events such as Morning Prayer, art and music performances, athletic games, Family Movie Night, annual Benefit, and Family Heritage Fair support and build upon the strength of our community. Our diverse community enriches our perspective. A warm and welcoming atmosphere supports the growth of our students as caring and compassionate individuals.

Goal 3: Holy Child Schools offer an intellectually challenging, innovative, and creative program of study that develops academic excellence, encourages curiosity, and instills the joy of learning.

Life-Long Learners

Meeting the wants of the age. Mayfield provides a studentcentered, creative program of study designed to instill a love of learning and develop skills with the future in mind. A commitment to the whole child addresses all aspects of the person: the spiritual, the intellectual, the creative, and the athletic.

Goal 4: Holy Child Schools promote Catholic social teaching in every facet of life as we carry out our motto, “Actions not Words.”

Global Citizens

Teach kindness, compassion, and understanding. Mayfield continues to foster a climate of dignity and reverence for all. We align our Holy Child mission with the important work of diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice (DEIJ). Reach Out has always been an essential part of what the MJS motto –Actions not Words – means to all of us. From making treats and collecting towels for the Humane Society in Kindergarten to making and delivering lunches to the guests at the St. Francis Center in the middle school, every year at MJS, students work together to make meaningful connections with charitable organizations in our community.

Goal 5: Holy Child Schools create a learning climate based on trust and reverence for the dignity and uniqueness of each person.

Respect

Children of God. Mayfield recognizes our differences make us stronger and emphasizes the individual potential of every student. Leadership, maker fairs, multiple athletic teams, public speaking, and performance opportunities reveal and showcase unique gifts and talents. Differentiated learning is recognized and supported by Learning Center specialists. Social-emotional development is prioritized, and a growth mindset is encouraged. Our community’s multicultural heritage is embraced with opportunities to share and celebrate throughout the year.

Goal 6: Holy Child Schools promote the personal growth and development of all who participate in the life of the school.

Thrive

Whole Child. Integral to Mayfield’s program and daily experience is the focus on the development of the whole person. A safe and supportive environment allows inquiry, creativity, and growth. Whether speaking at Morning Prayer, embracing design thinking in science, or collaborating with classmates on stage or the field, opportunity is prevalent, relationships are prioritized, and self-discovery is encouraged. Full-time counselors are dedicated to mental health and supporting the well-being of all students. Learning Specialists support teachers in all grades. A middle school Advisory program develops skills in social-emotional resourcefulness, digital citizenship, and executive functioning.

Goal 7: Holy Child Schools ensure the continuation and growth of Holy Child mission and philosophy in the school.

Future Focus

Next generation. With an eye towards the future, thoughtful planning across our community has Mayfield well-positioned to continue to meet the wants of the age. Mayfield’s continued faithfulness to fulfilling Cornelia Connelly’s vision of caring for and developing the Whole Child is paramount, particularly in our post-pandemic world. Our commitment to the Master Plan and Learning Elevated: The Campaign for the Whole Child supports the continual improvement of our school.
