Graduation 2021 The final weeks of the 2020-21 school year were filled with celebratory events highlighting the many accomplishments of the Class of 2021. The festivities culminated with the graduation ceremony held on June 3 outside on Spirit Field. Although re-imagined slightly for COVID-19 safety, the traditional speakers and presentation of awards highlighted the closeness of the class and their positivity and tenacity throughout this challenging year.

how you choose to use them is what defines the motto Actions not words.” Following the awards presentation, Student Body President Sophia Sissy Scout Page stood before her classmates one last time. With words of admiration and friendship, Sissy acknowledged the importance of this moment in their lives. She spoke with pride — “if anyone thought that a worldwide pandemic would hold us back, they had another thing coming,” and celebrated the class she knows so well, “When I look at our class, I see talent, determination, compassion, support, and most of all, I see a bond.”

Head of School Joe Sciuto recognized the extraordinary perseverance of the class in his address, spoke to their accomplishments, and reminded them to be optimistic and make the most of their many options, “We are moving out of dark times, and you have so much light and joy ahead of you.”

Finally, graduation speaker Erika Randall P ’18,’21, with a nod of gratitude to the late Father Alan Phillip, reminded the class of six gifts they received in their Mayfield education in threeletter words. First HUG, which Father Alan had taught them in second grade, a word for forgiveness and feeling worthy and loved. TRY for the intentional development of a growth mindset in every student, ASK as questions support curiosity as well as clarity, AID because service and helping others is a cornerstone of a Holy Child education. An open heart and compassion, modeled by their teachers, became LUV (with some liberties in the spelling), and the sixth was JOY as there is great joy in learning, growing in faith, and discovering one’s unique potential.

Alumni speaker Lily Salazar ’19 welcomed the class to the Alumni Association and, drawing from personal experiences since her own graduation, offered perspective, “…we do not take time to appreciate and understand the impact of our choices and what change we have made on one another unconsciously… Our words hold weight, but depending on

It was so meaningful for our community to celebrate the Class of 2021, in person, for graduation. With a collective deep breath, we came together, reduced in number but not in spirit with chairs spaced and masks on to place our attention on this class and joyfully wish them well. Join us in congratulating the Mayfield Junior School Class of 2021.
