Our Mission Mayfield Junior School, a Catholic independent school founded and sponsored by the Society of the Holy Child Jesus, implements the philosophy of the Holy Child Schools which is based on trust and reverence for the dignity of every person. From the Head of School Dear Mayfield Community,

I recently looked back at the letter that I wrote for last summer’s Maypoll. Although there was a lot of hope in that letter, there was some sadness due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the need to end the school year physically apart from each other. Now with the 2020-2021 school year behind us, I am so proud of how this community thrived and came together during the most challenging of times. Together, we focused on continuing to provide the best education possible. Together, we re-made and re-organized our campus to bring back students and teachers safely for in-person learning. Together, we found ways to celebrate (on-campus and virtually) all that make up the affirming cycle of a school year – longstanding traditions like the Kindergarten Nativity Play and Blue and White Day, and events such as First Eucharist, the Eighth-Grade Play, our new Grad Night and of course Graduation. Together, we mourned the passing of beloved community members, Bonnie Onken, Father Alan Phillip, C.P., and Jameson Hill. And together, we ended the year grateful for every open window when a door seemed to close and the resilience and enthusiasm to move forward joyfully. Mayfield Junior School is about people, and our faculty, staff, administration, Board of Trustees, parents, alumni, alumni parents, grandparents, and of course our students, rose to the occasion at every turn.

Our Ever Forward theme inspired us for the 2020-2021 school year and sets a hopeful tone for the year ahead. We have learned so much and become even stronger through the challenges we have faced, learned from, and overcome. There is much work to do as we plan for the future. We will continue to focus on our Mission and philosophy of the Holy Child schools, “which is based on trust and reverence for the dignity of every person,” as we, in Cornelia Connelly’s words, “meet the wants of the age.” Our trustees, administrators, faculty, and staff will continue to commit themselves to educate by the Goals for Schools of the Holy Child and to lead our students to embrace these values for themselves.

I am forever grateful to all of our community for their support. I especially want to thank our Ever Forward Scenario Planning Team, which included Board Chair, Jason Bridge, P ’23, ’23, Immediate Past Board Chair, Alison Jones Gamble, ’83, P ’18, ’20, Administrators Beth Dorr, Bridget Kelley-Lossada, Kathy Sweeney, and Larry Guyer for working so closely (and so often!) with me as we navigated through the uncharted waters of the pandemic. We kept the health and safety of our community at the forefront of all that we did, and I am honored to have worked with this group.

Such bright days are ahead for this joyful community, and your love and support continuously bless us. Thank you!

Board Notes

From the Chair of the Board of Trustees

Dear Mayfield Community, The 2020-2021 school year was one that we will never forget. Crises are often accelerants to change, catalysts to innovation, tests of resilience, and tap into our visceral emotions of grief and even unexpected joy. COVID-19 presented us with all of the above and more. As Chair of the Board of Trustees, I had the honor of working with the governing body of Mayfield Junior School and partnering with Joe Sciuto to face these challenges in collaboration and strength.

I am proud of the work of the Board, which acted with extreme care and dedication throughout the pandemic. Our usual seven meetings a year increased to ten. Countless additional Committee meetings were scheduled to ensure unexpected issues of expenses, required health and safety protocols, and the timely and safe return of our faculty/staff and students to campus were thoroughly addressed and considered. The expertise, perspective, and time offered by each Trustee and Committee member were invaluable and inspiring.

As we prepare for Mayfield’s 90th school year, our campus will be full of the life, joy, and learning that brought us all together. Our Board is focused on continuing to care for the health and safety of our community, increasing support to the academic and social-emotional needs of our students, expanding DEIJ initiatives, and developing a plan for the campus that will not only serve our current students but prepare Mayfield to serve students for the next 90 years!

As a result of the change, innovation, and resilience experienced during the pandemic, I truly believe that Mayfield Junior School is emerging from the shadows of the pandemic stronger and that our community is more closely connected.

The Board of Trustees is engaged in the success of Mayfield Junior School and continues to show our support of the Mission and dedication to the whole child development that makes Mayfield the best K-8 Independent School in Pasadena.

Retiring Members We are grateful for the service, insight and fellowship shared by this year’s retiring Board of Trustees members Alison Jones Gamble ’83, Bob Nakasone, Chad Norton, Gwen Palafox and Mari Salazar.

New Trustees Simone Johnston ’92

is the President of Oak Tree Ranch LLC, a working horse ranch in Creston, CA, and the mother of three current students: Ignatius ’23, Louis ’25, and Seamus ’28. An alum of Mayfield Junior School, Class of 1992, Simone continued her Holy Child education at Mayfield Senior School and then received her bachelor’s degree from Loyola University New Orleans. Simone returned to Los Angeles, where she opened the clothing boutique, Lily Simone, and later Cross & Brown General Store. She closed the shops in 2010 after seven years to be at home with her children and since then has worked in interior design and home renovations before starting Oak Tree Ranch. At Mayfield, Simone has served on the Facilities and Technology Committee and has also volunteered in several Parent Board roles. The teachings of the SHCJ have been a constant thread in her life, tying together faith, morals, service, and sense of community.

She is so happy for her children to now also be a part of this amazing lifelong community.

Brad King is an early Internet

pioneer and has spent the last 30 years building and launching technology-based companies.

His passion is to develop scalable technology-based solutions to help improve people’s lives. His current venture, called StartItUp, is a mobile-based technology solution for small business entrepreneurs. Brad has also produced several awardwinning independent films, and in his role as Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the Pasadena Playhouse, helped initiate and activate the revival of the Playhouse as one of the top regional theaters in the country.

In addition to having three children attend Mayfield Junior School (Aidan ’17, Rhys ’20, and Jocelyn ’22), Brad has been an engaged member of the school community for over a decade. He is currently serving on the Facilities and Technology committee. His wife, Pamela King, has also served as a Mayfield trustee, and together they share a passion for seeing that the Holy Child (nurturing the whole child) continues to remain at the core of Mayfield Junior School’s mission.

Jennifer Neumayer is an

experienced teacher and administrator currently serving as the Hastings Ranch Nursery School (HRNS) Director. She is a focused educator passionate about engaging children to enhance their individuality and discover their unique potential.

Jennifer’s role at HRNS has provided extensive experience working for a non-profit and managing everything from policies and budgets to admissions and curriculum. In addition, she has served in leadership positions around the community, including UTLA Teacher Union Representative, English Learner Advisory Committee Member, and youth athletics coach. Jennifer received her bachelor’s degree, as well as a Master of Arts in Child and Adolescent Literacy, and a Specialist Instruction Credential (Reading) from Loyola Marymount University. She is the mother of two current MJS students, Collin ’24 and Rylie ’27, and has been an active volunteer on campus, including roles as parent mentor, room parent, and Advancement Committee member.

entered the Capuchin Franciscan Order as a postulant in 1989 and did his novitiate at the San Lorenzo Seminary in the Santa Ynez Valley.

After completing his initial formation, he moved to St. Conrad friary in Berkeley to begin his theology studies until he was ordained on June 8, 1996. Subsequent to his ordination, Fr. Tony served as associate pastor at the St. Lawrence of Brindisi Parish in Watts. Later he served as vocation director until he was elected provincial minister in 2002.

After serving for six years as the provincial minister, he was appointed President of St. Francis High School in La Cañada, where he currently serves. Fr. Tony is a widower and has a daughter. Fr. Tony’s daughter and son-in-law live in San Francisco with their son and daughter. Prior to joining the Capuchins, Fr. Tony was an international banker and Senior Vice President with First Interstate Bank in Los Angeles. Fr. Tony also served in the US Army as a medic in the 47th Medical Battalion at Fort Hood in Texas from 1966-1968.

He strives to create transformational spaces that are shepherds of the students they host, the educators that teach within them, and the communities in which they reside.

Hazim is the managing Principal for CannonDesign’s Los Angeles office. He develops and leads strategies for office growth, operational excellence, diversity and inclusion, community and client engagement, cultural advancement, and talent development. He also works directly with his education clients, helping them rethink and assess their strategies and facility investments to better support their visions and advance their communities. Hazim was born and raised in Pasadena.

He has served as an active member of the Facilities and Technology Committee and, alongside his wife Betty, is the proud parent of Olivia ’21, Isaac ’23, and Elena ’25.

They are deeply committed to Mayfield Junior School and its mission.

Graduation 2021 The final weeks of the 2020-21 school year were filled with celebratory events highlighting the many accomplishments of the Class of 2021. The festivities culminated with the graduation ceremony held on June 3 outside on Spirit Field.

Although re-imagined slightly for COVID-19 safety, the traditional speakers and presentation of awards highlighted the closeness of the class and their positivity and tenacity throughout this challenging year.

Following the awards presentation, Student Body President Sophia Sissy Scout Page stood before her classmates one last time. With words of admiration and friendship, Sissy acknowledged the importance of this moment in their lives.

She spoke with pride — “if anyone thought that a worldwide pandemic would hold us back, they had another thing coming,” and celebrated the class she knows so well, “When I look at our class, I see talent, determination, compassion, support, and most of all, I see a bond.”

Head of School Joe Sciuto recognized the extraordinary perseverance of the class in his address, spoke to their accomplishments, and reminded them to be optimistic and make the most of their many options, “We are moving out of dark times, and you have so much light and joy ahead of you.”

Finally, graduation speaker Erika Randall P ’18,’21, with a nod of gratitude to the late Father Alan Phillip, reminded the class of six gifts they received in their Mayfield education in threeletter words. First HUG, which Father Alan had taught them in second grade, a word for forgiveness and feeling worthy and loved. TRY for the intentional development of a growth mindset in every student, ASK as questions support curiosity as well as clarity, AID because service and helping others is a cornerstone of a Holy Child education. An open heart and compassion, modeled by their teachers, became LUV (with some liberties in the spelling), and the sixth was JOY as there is great joy in learning, growing in faith, and discovering one’s unique potential.

Ever Forward MISSION FOCUSED

hroughout the entire 2020-2021 school year, the theme of Ever Forward was both opponent and ally. Never losing sight of the goal to bring students back to campus as soon as safely possible, the Ever Forward plan was created over the summer. It was hopeful and provided momentum. It was also incredibly layered and complex.

With three scenarios, Forward On-Campus, Forward Choice, and Forward Remote, Ever Forward was designed to be consistent with flexibility, able to bend with the unpredictable dynamics of the pandemic while remaining Mission focused. All the benefits of a Mayfield education: the opportunity to discover, collaborate and create, the challenges and encouragement, voice and choice, and the development of faith and compassion remained in focus as|we navigated an altered structure and delivery to ensure the well-being of our students and community.

“One of the most important things that I have learned from this pandemic is to see everything as an opportunity. Like a dark cloud that covers up the sun, we never know what the world has to offer us. But if we are resilient and have an attitude of gratitude, there will be a light at the end of the tunnel. All you have to do is wait for the cloud to move and feel the warmth of the sunshine.”

Forward Remote Although the year opened in Forward Remote, learning was still strong, and both teachers and students kept a positive mindset. It was an opportunity to do school differently and advance. Along with academics, the schedule included regular times dedicated to religion, physical education, and the arts. It was clear these disciplines were even more essential as students navigated the unique experience.

There were golden opportunities those first few months to see and celebrate each other. A school supply drivethru was a party on wheels with cheering teachers and special photos. The eighth grade put together a very creative Harvest Festival with drive-thru games, trunk treats, and an online costume parade. A Deck the Halls drive-thru before Christmas was a festive occasion in support of Reach Out as families delivered gifts for the Adopt-a-Family program.

“I had trepidation about teaching online because I knew I would not be in control of my classroom. With technology, you can’t predict if the Wi-Fi will glitch during the session. I noticed my students were also feeling anxious. It became the elephant in the room because we didn’t talk about it.

So finally, I decided, let’s talk about it. Let’s talk about how sometimes Wi-Fi will not work for us. It will be glitchy, but that’s OK because we are here, and we’re communicating, and if for some reason you get kicked off, just come right back. After we had that conversation, it was like I could relax and the students could relax, and we were OK with whatever happens during our Zoom calls. That stands out to me as a very positive thing.

Forward On-Campus Beginning in November, the school received the green light to bring Kindergarten back for in-person learning, and Grades 7-8 were allowed to attend conditioning classes on the field. Despite a setback in December due to rising case numbers and hospitalizations, we moved forward in February as things improved. Bringing hundreds of kids to campus safely, however, was no easy task. Resourcefulness, teamwork, and tenacity went a long way. Following local and state guidelines, systems were put in place, protocols and procedures posted, and campus enhancements such as air purifiers and touchless water faucets were purchased, all to keep our community safe. As things progressed, Grades 1-2 returned in midFebruary, Grades 3-4 the second week of March, Grades 5-6 the next week, and Grades 7-8 beginning March 22.

Families were given a choice at set intervals throughout the spring to keep their child in remote or return to campus. By May, nearly 85% of students were on campus.

With all-hands-on-deck, it was both a heroic and humbling effort. Daily health screenings were required, plus temperature checks on arrival. Hand sanitizer, and hand-washing stations were strategically placed. Physical distancing requirements created the need to use every available space on campus as a classroom. Indoor spaces were rearranged and adapted, staff and administrators enlisted as faculty partners, and directional paths were marked in courtyards and hallways. Segmented outdoor spaces (including the Head of School’s backyard) were assigned, and additional community support associates were hired to assist with carpool and supervision, as well as in classrooms.

Students were grouped in small cohorts and spent 50% of their time outside. Faculty received HyFlex teaching training to accommodate those who continued the year remotely while also engaging the students physically in front of them. With “roomies” and “zoomies” together, teachers juggled direct teaching with Zoom limitations while keeping everyone in the mix.

I saw them come up with creative ways to engage with each other.

They’d write notes and then deliver them to a classmate’s desk. They found ways to connect despite the distancing regulations. There was also more talk of doing hard things.

So many things seemed hard. We discussed them and plowed forward together. We didn’t give up!”

Most importantly, everyone remained committed to providing all the elements of a Holy Child education.

Enrichment classes such as music and art continued with the teachers in remote and eventually moved to outdoor spaces on campus. PE coaches engaged students on the field with obstacle courses, jump ropes, and even special “Jedi” training sessions for K-2. Even Mustang sports managed a short season with competition in football, volleyball, baseball and soccer.

We were grateful many spring events could happen on campus including First Eucharist and an adapted Blue and White Day. A new Grad Night party on the field and courtyards celebrated the Class of 2021 and graduation events, while outside and designed with physical distancing, were filled with gratitude.

Our Ever Forward year ended with a jubilant mass and a collective deep breath. All of the above may sound a bit like organized chaos, and it did (and always does) take a village. The sound of laughter and youthful chatter, the happy waves of hello, exuberant running on the field, full enjoyment of the playground, interaction and spontaneity - all worth every extra hour of planning, every adjustment, every ounce of effort. The students are the soul of our school, and their presence is both restorative and invigorating.

We use the word “joyful” a lot around here. It is what we aspire towards in all aspects of learning and being, in growing in faith, in confidence, in skill. The universal nature of joy sustains us. If we can see, feel it, we’ve done something right. Working towards it, sustaining it, and letting it work its magic will keep us moving Ever Forward.

Mayfield Angels What happens when a loving, close community of volunteers graciously accepts the role of angel?

Middle School Director Bridget Kelley-Lossada knew the challenges and uncertainty of this school year would take a toll on even her most upbeat and easy-going teachers. How could she reach out in support of every faculty and staff member all alone? Mayfield Angels to the rescue.

Over 85 individuals answered the call for help and truly went above and beyond in their efforts. Messages of hope, thoughtful gifts, letters of appreciation, and more appeared mysteriously on a daily basis – merely signed, An Angel. Small moments of joy for a weary school – blessings from heaven.

BE Clubs Within the Ever Forward schedule the middle school was able to accommodate the exploration of student interests.

“BE Clubs,” which were held Friday afternoons via Zoom with a faculty advisor, offered student voice and choice, unstructured play, and affinity.

There were over 20 clubs and collectives, created for students by students. “BE Clubs” included skill-building activities like WritersLandia or Baking Club, supported cultural education activism with the Black American Student Collective (BASC) and Asian American Student Collective (AASC), nurtured collaborative outreach in the Helping Hands Club or Advocates for Endangered Animals and offered a space for connection with Movie Club or Self-Care and Wellness.

Several BE Clubs took their efforts outside of the Friday meetings. Helping Hands assembled 200 hygiene kits for the St. Francis Center and BASC founder Moses Ma ’22 created several educational presentations, which he shared with the entire community during Morning Prayer.

Playlist Therapy Sixth Grade English Project Reveals the Power of Music Mrs. Guyer’s sixth grade English class covered a lot over the year. With the unique opportunity to have the passionate veteran librarian as teacher, guide, and mentor, the class was introduced to new literature, discussed relevant current events and issues, and discovered Mrs. Guyer’s deep love of music. Without a doubt, the course work was a challenge yet designed to engage students with thought, reflection, and expression. The final project asked students to self-reflect — to think about the moments in their lives, especially over the last year — through quarantine, remote learning, returning to campus — and consider what they learned about themselves, how they had grown, friendships nurtured, or lost, goals discovered. They were asked to select eight moments and share them all — through music.

With themes like, Never Give Up, the Year of Firsts, Up & Down, Grateful, and Small Moments, it was clear the impact emotionally was significant, even profound. Music choices illuminated individual experiences and the personal connections they had to each song. Pandemic life revealed in a playlist.

Excerpts from “The Playlist of My Year” project: ”Wow, what a year! If you would have told me in 2019, that there would be a global pandemic, I would not have believed you…My playlist will be called ‘Gratefulness’ because of its uplifting music. I believe that laughter is one of the best ways to change your mood. With the songs that I picked, it definitely can make you grateful for the things that you have…One thing that I learned during this tough time is that you have to go through the hard parts of life to really appreciate the good days and moments… My first song in my playlist is ‘High Hopes‘ by Panic! At the Disco.

This song reflects the good parts of quarantine, and some of the bad parts. Back in March of 2020, I wanted to have high hopes for the future, but I also knew that if I did and they did not come true, then I would be heartbroken…This song makes me so grateful for how much progress we made to get to this point where we can see our friends, and go back to a normal way of learning.

‘Tubthumping’ by Chumbawamba is a very empowering song. It reminds you that when you are knocked down, you can get back up again. You can’t let one situation bring you down. A lot of people give up after one try at something, but how can you get success if you only give it one attempt? I am grateful for this because it gives me the power and motivation to keep on going with whatever I’m doing.” Ava Schlaerth “This year has been really hard for everyone, but we’ve also had lots of new experiences.

My playlist is called ‘A Year of Firsts’ because lots of people (including me) have tried out new things, or had a new appreciation for the things that we already had. Even though we had a hard time, we learned a lot along the way… This year reminded me of a lot of Pink Floyd songs, especially because I listen to them with my Dad, but ‘Time’ was very meaningful. It talks about ‘ticking away the moments that make up a dull day’ and how time moves in a weird way. The lockdown seemed very long but now that it is over it seemed short. As the song says ‘the sun is the same in a relative way but you’re older.’ I learned that my family and friends are the most important part of my life. Drawing is something I have also spent a lot of time on during quarantine. I chose the song ‘I Can See Clearly Now‘ by Johnny Nash because even though it was hard sometimes when I couldn’t get something right, I always tried my best. Another big step was coming back to school, but it was also really fun. It was really nice seeing everyone’s faces and being able to talk with people.

Stepping UP to PRESS START! An inconsistent, short, and, at first, nonexistent and remote rehearsal schedule could not keep the Class of 2021 from putting together the Eighth-Grade Play. And what a play it was! Video game characters we know and love saving the day by organizing a musical fundraiser? Yes, please!

Press Start! was the perfect combination of creativity and collaboration both on stage (and screen) and off. Following months of living in a seemingly virtual world, just like video game characters dominated by pixelated images, the entire class worked hard to respawn and earn points to further the cause! They recorded audio and video tracks from home, at school, with and without green screens, on their own, and in small groups until there was enough footage to string together this hilarious plotline.

Student Council even organized a snack bar so that viewers from home could enjoy the show with concessions and support Reach Out. And, in a truly magical fashion, the show came to life as the audience of eighth-grade household pods watched the video on the field. Level achieved!

Benefit 2021:

Let the Good Times Roll!

Laissez les bons temps rouler! This year’s Benefit, Let the Good Times Roll!, was all about finding positivity and looking toward the future with hope. Inspired by the vibrancy, resiliency, and joy of the city of New Orleans, Benefit 2021 started with a fun and festive drive-thru for the MJS Community. The North Parking Lot was transformed by our talented Benefit committee, led by Co-Chairs Mary Cole and Rebekah Wong and Décor Co-Chairs Tiffany Barden and Heather Chen, into a Mardi Gras celebration full of games, prizes, jazz music, and delicious Cajun food and drink!

The evening culminated in a live stream Auction, Paddle Raise, and Raffle hosted by Head of School Joe Sciuto and Marcie Sciuto, alongside Lower School Director Beth Dorr and Middle School Director Bridget Kelley-Lossada.

With heartfelt support from the Mayfield community, this year’s event raised over $175,000 for the MJS Endowment. A strong Endowment ensures that MJS can remain steadfast under any circumstances and continue to offer Holy Child education at the highest caliber for students today, tomorrow, and beyond.

Thank you to all those who gave to this year’s Paddle Raise, raising over $60,000 in support of enhancements to the Greg Smith Memorial Gym. The gym is the

center of community activity at the school – home to generations of sporting events, school Masses, graduation ceremonies, and more. We are excited to get to work refurbishing the space with a traversing wall, new scoreboards, new padding, and new flooring with the updated Mustang Mascot.

We are so grateful to all those who participated in Benefit 2021. Whether you tuned into the live stream, attended the drive-through celebration, became an event patron, or raised your paddle high, your generous support of our special school allows the good times to keep rolling!

Claire Furlanetto, Fifth Grade and Sissy Scout Page, Eighth Grade, were recognized this spring as winners of the Hassan Hathout Foundation’s Loving Heart essay contest. The Hassan Hathout Legacy Foundation is an educational nonprofit organization whose mission is to spread the message of “Love in God.” 2021 was the 11th year of the competition, and despite challenges with the pandemic, the number of students submitting essays was the largest to date.

“Rosalind’s Loving Heart”

Sissy Scout Page participated in and was chosen as a winner in the Hassan Hathout Loving Heart Essay contest for the last four years. What perhaps started as an opportunity to try something new and write about something important to her has become a meaningful interfaith connection – one she treasures and feels blessed to have experienced.

Sissy’s essay topics over the years are thoughtful reflections on our choices made with the gifts we are given. Fifth grade was a recipe for growing a loving heart with the gift of choice in our actions.

In sixth grade, she wrote about the gift of mercy, drawing from a quote in the Qur’an, and in seventh grade, called for preserving and protecting the gift of nature. Sissy’s final eighth-grade essay considered seeking and witnessing the beautiful – how this gift is so much more than visual; it holds emotions, strength, and connection.

“Beautiful is a special word. The word beautiful has more meaning than simply to look pretty; beautiful represents character and who you are on the inside.

Beauty is what we see when we take a look outside at the world around us; beauty is the feeling of serenity with animals; but most of all, beauty is how the world is full of unique and different people wanting to live in harmony.”

There is no shortage of passion or confidence when you speak with Claire Furlanetto. The busy middle schooler loves to write and tell stories, so her approach for the Loving Heart essay was unique. She was the first in the history of the contest to submit a fictional essay – sharing the growth of a loving heart through the daily experiences and choices made by her story’s heroine, Rosalind, who continually pushes aside her plans to help others. Claire chose the fictional essay as it played to her strengths and shared that she only had to look to the people in her life for inspiration.

”Rosalind ate her chicken nuggets and was about to finally do something she wanted when her mom called. “Rosalind! Can you tell James the story you promised?”

“Ok,” Rosalind yelled back.

As she told James the story of the creation of the world, and as James’ smile got wider and wider, she realized something. Even though she hadn’t done anything she’d wanted that day, she realized that it was ok. She had helped people. And that was the best thing of all.”

The Alumni Council consists of 21 members, who function as a voluntary group to the Advancement Office and the Head of School.

Announcing the 2021-2023 Alumni Council Chair The MJS Alumni Office is pleased to announce Bryan Lynch ’98 will be the next Alumni Council Chair. Bryan has served on the Alumni Council since 2017 and will serve as Chair, effective July 1, 2021 extending through June 2023.

After graduating from Mayfield Junior School, Bryan attended Loyola High School and went on to the University of San Diego, where he studied English and Art History. He is currently pursuing his Masters in Social Entrepreneurship at the University of Southern California (USC) while also working as a Major Gift Officer at USC’s Marshall School of Business.

Bryan has been grateful for his 16 years of Catholic education and the foundation Mayfield Junior School provided throughout his personal and professional life.

I’m humbled with the opportunity to lead the Alumni Council and strengthen our role in conjunction with our Head of School, Joe Sciuto, and his future plans for the success of Mayfield Junior School.

As Alumni Council Chair, my primary focus will be to engage more and more alums. We have had a goal of increasing our alumni donor participation to 10%, which I believe is very achievable – we just need to get there! Through creative engagement and utilizing the strengths of our MJS Alumni Community, we can achieve a strong alumni presence which is paramount to our collective success.

Mayfield Junior School has very much influenced who I have become both professionally and personally. Before getting into the world of philanthropy, I worked in various roles in business but found my passion in giving back – Mayfield Junior School is a huge reason for my need to give back. Giving back and making an impact in our community is something I hold dear to my heart.

I have so many wonderful memories from Blue and White Day to remembering my First Communion, but our campus stands out the most. I know it sounds funny, but the laughter and playfulness of like-minded children playing bring a giant smile to my face as I look back and think about my experience at MJS. Being an MJS graduate makes me feel incredibly proud. I know wholeheartedly that I always lead with a positive and meaningful mindset with everything I do.

Graduating from a prestigious school like Mayfield Junior School elevates my selfawareness for the challenges that lay ahead in high school, college, and finally, in my career. I have never forgotten Cornelia Connelly’s principle, Actions not Words.

The Mayfield Community inspires me as I’ve received so much from the friends I made during my time there – we remain close to this day!

Departing Faculty The impact of a Mayfield teacher is best understood through the eyes of their students. Whether currently attending, recently graduated or seasoned alumni, ask any to describe the best part about Mayfield, and they will mention a teacher (or two). The teachers leaving Mayfield this year made unique contributions to the life of the school, some over many years and some only over a few. All inspired us, raising the bar with their focus and commitment, and all will be missed.

Pam Danni In her 31 years at Mayfield, Pam has been a Fourth-Grade teacher, Religion Teacher, Eighth-Grade Team Leader, Morning Prayer Coordinator, Student Council Coordinator, and more recently, she had taken on the role of Legacy Coordinator. She has always been very passionate about the eighth-grade experience at MJS. From day one of the eighth -grade year, students were held to a higher standard, taught to lead with grace and compassion, be role models and fully embrace the responsibilities entrusted to them. When Pam became an eighth-grade advisor, she was guided by the legendary Señora Reichert and Kathy Holtsnider. She intuitively understood how important this last year at Mayfield was for the students, set out to make the most of it, and never lost sight of that goal.

”Pam, you leave behind some extraordinarily big shoes to fill, and although I know my stubby feet will never look as fabulous in heels, I will always remember what you have taught me - make your bed, everybody makes mistakes, never give up, we need owls, peacocks, lions, and koalas, tuck in your shirt, and lead on purpose!“

Pam created the School Families program in the late 1990s to cultivate the leadership skills of the eighth graders as well as build community and relationships across grade levels. As a religion teacher, she enlightened young minds to social justice causes and the importance of service. Pam continually grew the Reach Out program, inspiring student voice and choice and encouraging them to find and cultivate their personal causes.

Years of graduates will remember Mrs. Danni guiding them through uncovering their leadership personality – owl, peacock, lion, or koala -– to begin the year. Harvest Festival Planning sessions, and sitting wide-eyed as Mrs. Danni rationed donuts in a lesson on inequality are legendary. Always busy, Mrs. Danni’s eighth graders could find refuge in the welcoming chaos of her classroom whether covered in Love Gram preparations or set up for sandwich-making for St. Francis Center. She was there to listen to stories about first experiences with School Families , lead a prayer circle before Blue and White Day festivities, extend a hug and lovely complement on graduation day, and so much more.

It is hard to imagine a group of eighth graders without Pam Danni standing among them. Although many of her students have towered over her physically, Mrs. Danni’s very presence, expectations, and visible care and attention always made her the tallest person in the group. Pam learned to trust her instincts, expect the unexpected, and always go with love, encouragement, and trust.

Middle School Science | Robotics Mark Pattullo has retired after ten years at Mayfield. He was an advisor, taught middle school science, and led Robotics and STEAM programs. Calm and steadfast, Mark encouraged his students to wonder and ask questions. His students benefited from the passion he brought to his teaching, and he has been extremely supportive of their unique gifts.

Eighth Grade English Diane Bonfils has retired after nine years at Mayfield. Often referred to as inspiring by her students, Diane deftly nurtured writing talent while developing skill. She deeply respected student voice and looked for opportunities to encourage her students’ curiosity, energy, and passion.

Susan Reedy Counselor

Patient, comforting, and passionate about the social-emotional well-being of all, Susan Reedy was Mayfield's school counselor and guidance teacher for 13 years. She was the first to bring mindfulness to the classroom before it was a fad and spearheaded efforts at training others on what it means to teach in a trauma-informed way. Susan shared so much with our community — years of empathetic listening, powerful skill-building, and revolutionary parenting workshops.

In her 17 years at Mayfield, Ann Vradenburg was a strong advocate for both students and colleagues. Reassuring and supportive, Ann brought expertise and insight to her work and quickly made each student she worked with feel loved and encouraged.

In Memoriam Father Alan Phillip, CP The MJS community mourned the loss of Father Alan Phillip in March of this year. He was a bright light within a gentle soul. We were so fortunate to have him in our Mayfield family and will miss his humor, warmth, and kindness.

”Father Alan was one of our greatest blessings. His sense of humor, thoughtful manner and gentle spirit, radiated peace and goodness. The children really responded to this, especially the second graders as they prepared for and received the sacraments of Reconciliation and First Eucharist with his help. Bonnie Onken Jameson Hill The MJS community was deeply saddened by the death of longtime faculty member, Jameson Hill. Jameson passed in late May after a long, brave battle with cancer.

In his 22 years at Mayfield, Jameson was teacher, advisor, colleague, and friend.

He loved teaching and taught Middle School religion, math, French and dance with both style and substance. Jameson embraced Holy Child values, was devoted to his students, and was a close friend to so many fellow teachers. We will miss his humor, creativity, goodness, and grace.

In November 2020, our community learned of the sudden passing of MJS staff member Bonnie Onken. Bonnie had been Advancement Coordinator for 11 years and generously shared her beautiful singing voice with our community at many masses. Always ready to listen or share a pot of tea, she was a great friend and colleague and well loved by our faculty and staff.

This year, Mayfield Junior School joins all Holy Child Schools to commemorate the 175th anniversary of the founding of the Society of the Holy Child Jesus (SHCJ).

The founding is formally recognized as October 15, 1846, in Derby, England, when Cornelia Connelly and three postulants assisted at their first Mass as a religious community. One founding led to another. At Mayfield Junior School, our own history, traditions, and spirit began in 1931 when Holy Child Sisters opened our school here on Euclid Avenue. This heritage and the relationship we continue today with the SHCJ is essential to who we are as a school and community.

We at Mayfield are blessed to be a part of this truly international community.
