ATTENTIVENESS

For the J, it’s all about the details. We know that little things add up to make or break the experience for our members. That’s why this past year, when more community members started to return to the building, we wanted to create a welcoming, comfortable—and safe—space to gather. We ordered outdoor recliners and couches, as well as commercial umbrellas for our courtyard, so people can enjoy the already beautiful setting in a more enjoyable way. Each day, you will find moms enjoying a cup of coffee together while their kids look for the ducks or peek at the fountain, or friends enjoying their lunch from the J Cafe together.

This attention to detail was especially important in welcoming members of our 60 & Better Center back to the J. Finding connection, encouragement, and a sense of community was a difficult challenge for many throughout the pandemic. For the senior population, many of whom live alone, the lack of connection was particularly isolating. But the JCC helped build community when it was not possible to gather in person. The 60 & Better Center provided more than 300 virtual programs in 2020 alone, ranging from exercise classes to discussion groups and musical events.

In April of 2021, we launched a multi-phase plan for in-person programming, beginning with offering congregate lunches five days a week. The second phase included hosting larger events in the outdoor tent, the first of which was a Mother’s Day concert. When we noticed some in this group could not comfortably sit, or maneuver around the folding chairs, we ordered new, more stable chairs for events in the tent. June saw the return of Friday Flicks and in-person exercise classes, and in July, in-person field trips happened for the first time since before the onset of COVID-19.

In each phase, and for each individual program, staff members carefully considered what precautions should be taken to ensure participants’ safety. The details truly mattered in this case. Some of those included setting a maximum number of participants, and requiring registration for all classes and events, to ensure proper social distancing. In order to meet the demand (and enthusiasm!) for the return of Friday Flicks, we added a second showing. We know it’s important to create connections during our popular trips and activities, so they are mostly planned in safer outdoor settings.

After a challenging year, it was wonderful to see everyone, once again fully engaged in our 60 & Better programming. There is so much energy around the building, and people are creating connections with each other that are creating momentum for an even better year to come.

The pandemic was hard on everyone including the seniors, but they adapted to the new challenges amazingly well,” Senior Adult Services Director Susan Bradley-Meyers said.

“They have been excited to be back at the J for programming in the tent with over 100 people participating in the L’Chaim Happy Hour! They have continued to embrace the new Zoom technology to allow more people to participate in their favorite hybrid discussion group and we are seeing people everyday at the congregant hot kosher lunch.

COLLABORATION

When it comes to getting the Jewish community together and educating our youth about Judaism, PJ Library takes it home–literally. This program sends free Jewish children’s books to the homes of about 850 kids ages 8 and under in Cincinnati each month. And PJ Our Way allows 150 kids ages 9-12 to pick their own Jewish literature each month. The program is a collaboration between local and national funders, as well as day schools and synagogues. The driving force behind this program is to foster knowledge of Jewish customs and traditions, beginning at an early age. Not only are books sent to homes, but socializing in the community is encouraged with monthly programming offered by the Mayerson JCC and community congregations and schools.

From ice cream socials to pumpkin picking, children and parents are given the opportunity to form life-long friendships.

“PJ Library is an easy, accessible way to bring Judaism into your home to start and grow Jewish traditions for you and your family,” PJ Library Coordinator Marisa Phillips said. Grinspoon Foundation, and local donors like Anne Heldman—with the help of the Jewish Federation of Cincinnati, we are able to provide hundreds of children and families with books for many nights of bedtime reading.

“Because of those partnerships, we are able to invite families to attend monthly programming on and off site. Our goal is to create connections and share meaningful experiences as our children grow together.”

The Mayerson JCC also works with the community in support of local businesses, including the JCC Fall Market.

One of those vendors is Andrew Kartal, beekeeper and the owner of Pure Honey, a local raw honey producer that sells his products at farmers markets and grocery stores around Cincinnati. His honey is not processed and sells well, his only advertising is word of mouth from return customers.

The JCC Fall Market is unique not only because it offers goods to help families observe the Jewish New Year, but it also offers a variety of kosher products, including produce from 80 Acres, one of this year’s sponsors. 80 Acres brings the next generation of fresh kosher produce—grown 100% pesticide free at an eco-friendly indoor farm near you.

Noah Zelkind from 80 Acres said it is important to him and his family to be engaged in the Jewish community.

“We appreciate the work the J does throughout the year and enjoy connecting with people at the Fall Market. We also thought it was quite important to get kosher certification. It puts us in a unique place to share something new and special with the community.”

These partnerships are critical to serving our community. Because of our collaborations with funders and other organizations, we can fulfill our mission of connecting people so that they can live happier and fuller lives, creating a vibrant Jewish community.

INNOVATION

After COVID-19 hit in 2020, the J was at the forefront, actively responsive in real time, to daily changing scenarios relating to COVID within our community. Even when the building was closed, staff and volunteers continued working, to ensure meals were getting to seniors. We reopened the Early Childhood School as soon as we could, with a focus on safety procedures including sanitizing, social distancing, and masking. Fitness classes were held over Zoom and on Facebook live, as well as safely in person at the J. And we created a new program to respond to a unique challenge—working parents who now had to help their kids with virtual learning from home. That’s where the idea for All Day at the J was born. All Day at the J served as a distance learning support program with the goal of providing a safe environment for children grades K-6 to attend virtual classes and complete their educational requirements.

We supported them by helping them log on to classes, made sure they completed assignments, and provided socially-distant activities when they were not participating in school-related classes or projects. This program was a great way to provide a sense of normalcy for kids who found themselves in an unusual school year—and peace of mind for parents.

Along with innovation in our day-to-day programs at the J, we rethought how to safely approach celebrations that would typically draw hundreds of people.

“In the midst of COVID restrictions, our regular plans for what we call ‘the Yoms’ were thrown out the window. we had to quickly pivot to a hybrid model that would be safe for our community,” said Devra Silverman, Youth and Family Programming Specialist. “Even though we did the commemorations and celebrations virtually, it taught us so much about what our community is capable of. It pushed our professional team to think outside of the box and provide unique and meaningful experiences while we were all stuck at home.”

Instead of having three Yoms events—Yom HaShoah and Yom HaZikaron commemorations and a Yom HaAtzmaut celebration—we decided to spread Israel programming across an entire week, with the goal of offering different types of Israel programs for different age groups in our community.

We ended the week with an in-person Yom HaAtzmaut Drive-In Fireworks Spectacular, put on by Phantom Fireworks. Much like a drive-in movie, participants came to the Mayerson JCC, received a goodie bag during check-in, then parked in a socially-distanced spot to watch the show from the comfort of their car. Participants’ goodie bags had blue and white glow sticks, Israeli snacks, games and activities to keep kids occupied, and a Havdalah prayer sheet.

Although we celebrated a little differently this past year, the J community’s enthusiasm and commitment to be together shone through--just like the fireworks in the night sky this year at Yom HaAtzmaut. The J’s commitment to always exploring new ways of doing things allowed us to serve our community in important ways this year, from providing a safe place for students to complete online learning to ensuring our community could show our Jewish and Israeli pride.

KINDNESS

Our Early Childhood School (ECS) provides a high-quality, age-appropriate curriculum that encourages development, curiosity, imagination, and self-esteem. That is done through a wide variety of classes—swim lessons, music, fitness, yoga, gardening, and more. But most importantly, we strive to offer a program where kindness is reflected throughout our interactions with children, families, staff, and the community.

One of our parents who has experienced this is Becky Katterjohn. Becky has enrolled both of her children in the Early Childhood School and said that gives her peace of mind knowing that her children are with kind and caring teachers.

“As a parent, obviously, you want what’s best for your child, including being in the care of people you trust,” Becky said. “I never worry. I don’t feel the need to check in, and I can focus on my work during the day.”

Becky knows that her children are in good hands because of the reputation of the program and the positive energy she sees every day. Her son, Liam, always runs to give his teachers a hug in the morning because of their bond.

As their biggest fan, Becky wants others to know that the community is welcoming and everyone goes out of their way to make you feel included.

“Get on the waitlist as soon as you can. Get in there because it’s worth its weight in gold.”

That kindness found at the ECS extends into other areas of the Mayerson JCC—like fitness. Whatever someone’s fitness goal is, the Mayerson JCC fitness team is here to help. The main force behind making sure each member is supported, is our fitness trainers.

Fitness Director Rachel Horton has been a part of the fitness team since our opening.

The fitness staff is often the first point of contact new members have at the J, so it’s essential they are welcoming and kind.

“Rachel does a phenomenal job connecting new members to fitness,” General Manager of Fitness Operations Donnie Kalb said. “People will always mention how nice and sweet she is. If you overhear her in the gym, it’s apparent how great her relationship is with members.”

After having such a positive experience in the fitness center, new members are often drawn to the many other offerings the J has to connect people in our community and make it much more vibrant.

RESPECT

When it comes to respecting our employees, that doesn’t stop when they leave the building. We have nurtured a strong work-life balance for our employees, including a generous paid leave policy of three weeks of vacation, which is accrued from day one on the job. We encourage our employees to use that full amount of time off each year.

Not only are our staff a part of the community, but so are their families.

With a family membership to the J, spa discounts, and discounts for youth and family programming, families benefit from all the features a staff member receives.

“We want every staff member to feel like they’re part of the community here,” Chief Operating Officer Jennifer Kash said. “And that even includes their family.”

Respecting our employees for their unique and important contributions extends beyond the benefits package. We have made significant adjustments in this past year to improve wages.

The goal of the adjustments was to pay a more competitive wage for our non-exempt/hourly positions and retain our quality staff, with a special appreciation to those who stayed with us through the pandemic. It was also allowed us to recruit qualified new staff members. Employees are recognized for the contributions to the J in multiple ways, from yearly service awards, to employee of the month and individual “Chai Fives” that staff members give one another. Each method of recognition is reflective of our respect and true appreciation of every team member.

All the wonderful features at the J would not be possible without our dedicated staff – thank you! As we respect our employees’ contributions, we value their expertise and development. As our employees grow in their roles and achieve each goal, we want to make sure that does not go unnoticed.

“We make it a priority to promote from within the organization,” Jennifer said. “There were several staff members in multiple departments who were promoted over the last year, which demonstrates our strong belief in developing and retaining the best talent for the J.” “We really value and respect every member of our team and their individual contributions to achieving our mission and living our values every day,” Jennifer Kash said.

SERVICE

Service is at the core of who we are at the J. One of the most significant ways we served our community in the last year is by delivering meals to seniors who are homebound or do not feel comfortable going out because of COVID-19.

In 2020, the 60 & Better Center delivered 97,323 meals to 1,022 unique clients—a significant increase from the year before. These numbers include not only regular Meals on Wheels clients but also congregate meal clients, who would typically eat at the J if it weren’t for the pandemic. For these seniors, the department pivoted to create bi-weekly meal delivery packages until they reopened for meals at the J in the spring of 2021. Now that the J is open again, we are able to serve our seniors in-person and we get to see each other daily again.

Managing the swift increase in meal delivery due to the pandemic shutdown would not have been possible without the generous annual donation from Jo Levine, which enabled us to purchase supplies for shelf-stable meals and fund the work of the 60 & Better Center and Mayerson JCC Food Services. We also received critical funding from the Jewish Federation of Cincinnati, The Jewish Foundation of Cincinnati, and the Community COVID Relief Fund.

For both Meals on Wheels and Congregate Meal clients, meal delivery provided a point of contact at a time when socialization was not possible. This gave clients something to look forward to—in addition to getting nutritious meals.

We could not have provided this critical service without the many volunteers, who spent countless hours packing and delivering food.

Freddie Wolf and Jessie Heines met at Camp at the J in the summer of 2015, and when Jessie left to go back to University of Wisconsin that fall, she and Freddie kept in touch. Freddie went to visit her in Madison, and Jessie joked, “Since you drove eight hours to see me, I guess you are my boyfriend now.”

Now, Freddie and Jessie are engaged to be married. As they look ahead to their future, they still reflect on the fun times they had at camp, like dressing up for themed days and coming up with “punny” titles for camper awards.

Developing relationships while serving the community together is a family tradition. Freddie’s parents, Natalie and Scott Wolf, also met at the JCC. Spending the summer together at Camp at the J forged the bond between another couple, Lauren Glynn and Robert Smyjunas. While they also met in 2015, they worked together as counselors for two summers before making it official.

CONNECTIONS

While the volunteers and staff members at the J work hard to serve others, sometimes connections are forged among those who serve. Often, good friendships form—sometimes even marriages.

“Through the J, Robert and I have both had many opportunities of service to give back to the community which has strengthened our relationship overall,” Lauren said. “Robert has become a vital part of the boys’ basketball team as a coach, and both of us have volunteered at many events together here at the JCC. Not only did we meet at the J, but through service and new experiences, we have grown at the J.”
