Fall Program Guide 2024

Page 1

Welcome

Soon, there will be a fall chill in the air, but programs are heating up at the J! The Fall Program Guide is our biggest guide that we print and that’s because it’s jam-packed with exciting and engaging events for community members of all ages.

Kick off autumn and welcome the holiday season at the Fall Market. Shop around and enjoy local produce, food trucks, and handcrafted art at the J. Then, visit our annual Under One Roof sukkah art exhibit in October to take in community members’ creations, interpreting the theme Luminosity.

If you’re looking to begin or continue your fitness journey, the J offers specialty workout programs like Commit to be Fit Express, Women and Weights, and our Pilates classes. Of course, don’t miss out on our annual Oy Vey 5K, which supports the J’s sports & recreation programs.

Read on to learn more about all we have to offer this Fall, including new and returning kids classes, exciting young adult events, and collaborative lectures and workshops.

We hope to see you there!

Warmest regards,

SUKKAH ART EXHIBIT LUMINOSITY Luminosit y Luminosity UNDER ONE ROOF ARTS, IDEAS & JEWISH LIFE

ON DISPLAY AT THE J

October 16 - 30

FREE to Visit | Mayerson JCC

Celebrate the festival of Sukkot* this fall with the Under One Roof community art exhibit, which features artwork designed by various individuals and groups as they interpret the central theme, Luminosity.

What brings light to your life? How can we aspire to make the world a better and brighter place?

From the beginning of time–from when G-d said, “Let there be Light!” to how luminescence influences and inspires us–light has been an enduring symbol in Judaism. As the Proverbs teach, “A mitzvah is a candle, and the Torah is light.” As we take in the radiance of the stars in the night sky above our sukkah, the artworks in the 2024 Under One Roof exhibit will explore the brilliance of light all around us.

The Under One Roof Sukkah Art Exhibit will be on display in the community sukkah, a temporary structure, in the Mayerson JCC courtyard. Visit the sukkah exhibit anytime during regular business hours from October 16 - 30.

Take a deep dive into Judaism's core ideas, texts, and practices. This class explores what being Jewish has looked like in the past and scouts ahead for what it could look like in the future. Part lecture series, part study club, and part spiritual laboratory, this series is designed to teach about and challenge mainstream Judaism. This introduction to Judaism course is built around the notion that Judaism is constantly changing and is in a period of especially radical change. We believe that there is no singular way to teach “what Jews believe” or “what Jews do.”

Judaism Inbound is an introduction to Judaism class that covers Judaism as a religion, Judaism as history, and Judaism as a culture, with a “spiritual but not religious” approach. It is meant for a wide variety of people, but a perfect course for those considering conversion, in multi-faith relationships, seeking to unlearn/relearn a new framing around Judaism, or just curious about Judaism.

FROM STAGE TO SCREEN:

THE BROADWAY MUSICAL GOES TO HOLLYWOOD

Thursday, November 21

7pm | Virtual

For nearly a century, Hollywood has been captivated by the allure of Broadway musicals. From the beginning of talkies up through today, most of the Great White Way’s biggest hits have made the transfer to the movie theater, though sometimes the journey has yielded damaged goods. For every triumph like My Fair Lady or Cabaret there have been misbegotten flops like Camelot or A Chorus Line. This talk will look at the colorful history of the Broadway-to-movie musicals and trace its development from truncated adaptations, in which most of the songs were abandoned, to glorious reinterpretations like Milos Forman’s Hair or Steven Spielberg’s remake of West Side Story.

“IT’S A WONDERFUL TOWN” NY CITY IN THE MOVIES

Thursday, December 19

7pm | Virtual

For more than 125 years, filmmakers have been drawn to the dynamic vitality of New York City. Its dramatic architecture, its diverse neighborhoods and populations, its universally recognized landmarks, its 24/7 lifestyle, and its 8 million stories have helped make the city a featured player in more than 17,000 movies—including such memorable films as King Kong, Naked City, On the Town, West Side Story, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Taxi Driver, Wall Street, and Do the Right Thing. Illustrated with more than 50 clips, this presentation demonstrates the changing ways New York has been captured on film, and why it remains a star attraction today.
