Service is a value that motivates every member of our organization – it’s more than what we provide, it’s also how we solve problems and find new solutions to allow our community to live our mission with us. From the Early Childhood School (ECS) students starting at 6 weeks old through our oldest, but young at heart, seniors, we pride ourselves on our ability to serve and exceed expectations for individuals throughout their entire lives.

Rena Hannon, Director of ECS, adapted with the ever-changing regulations during the pandemic, all while ensuring that stringent health and safety requirements were upheld. The teachers in the ECS have been able to continue to serve our community’s youngest by following not only the policies and procedures set forth from the state of Ohio, but also from additional measures that we implemented ourselves, allowing parents to comfortably and confidently send their children back to school. We did this all the while the children had fun while learning.

“We have been creative, utilizing indoor and outdoor space to ensure the quality of education has not been impacted whatsoever. We lowered the teacher to student ratio, installed temporary dividers, created new drop-off and pickup procedures, all while social distancing, mask wearing, and constantly emphasizing hygiene and handwashing.” While the education and safety of the children was at the forefront, Rena and the teachers were transparent with the families in communicating the ever-evolving classroom as the pandemic progressed. “Through this challenging time, our team and the ECS community have only grown closer, thriving and coming out the other side even stronger.”

Our unrivaled service to our community is consistent throughout our entire organization, but has been especially recognized with our award-winning Senior Center that is home to the vibrant 60 & Better community. As the COVID-19 situation unfolded, our Senior Department immediately recognized the severity of how this could affect our seniors, as we were forced to temporarily close our doors. Two of the most impactful services for our 60 & Better population are Meals on Wheels (MOWs) and Congregate Meals – both programs ensure food security for older adults in our community. MOWs differ from Congregate Meals as the program involves the delivery of kosher meals directly to 60 & Better members’ households; Congregate Meals normally are held daily, in-person at the J, allows our seniors to enjoy the delicious lunches together while getting in a little schmoozing.

The leadership of our Senior Department anticipated and planned for the significant disruption the pandemic would have, and didn’t skip a beat before getting straight to work on figuring out how to continue these vital services as the governor shut down senior centers state-wide.

“It’s amazing what we’ve been able to accomplish and the sheer amount of lives we’ve touched.

It’s hard we don’t get to see their smiling faces within our doors, but we are working as a team to look out for our community and keep them all safe.” From mid-March through August, the J delivered 40,104 meals to 366 unique people. That is slightly less than double what they did a year ago in the same time period. This alone shows the dedication and level of service your J has towards our members and community.

Though times are uncertain, our ability to provide stability and support to our community stands strong. Our service to the community has provided a safe place for children to attend preschool, continued food security for those who rely on us, and everything in-between. It’s amazing how much we can accomplish together, in our unified and vibrant community.

Respect We respect and value people for their unique and important contributions.

While this has been a time of uncertainty for almost everyone, the J has been working diligently to provide stability for our community. From providing meals to the 60 & Better community, to childcare starting at 6 weeks and up, to our virtual programs, the impact can be felt for all walks of life; none of which would be possible without our dedicated, passionate, and hard-working employees. In order to live our mission, we feel it is essential to support our own employees so they can support our community.

With many schools transitioning to a partial or completely virtual setting, some of our staff members didn’t know where to turn for help with childcare. One employee explained, “Some staff were waiting on pins and needles, hoping the J might find a way to help so that they could come to work.” She continued, “For those who don’t have a support network, the J stepped into that supportive role.”

One of the ways we’ve been able to support our staff through the increased uncertainty with the start of the 2020 – 2021 school year is with discounts for their children to attend All Day at the J. Our All Day at the J program supports students with their virtual learning curriculum with an engaging, camplike environment, providing children a safe place to learn while their parents continued to earn a living knowing that their children were safely and successfully completing their schoolwork. Valuing our fellow team members is just one way we display and demonstrate respect for not only our employees, but our fellow man.

Another focus for us throughout these challenging times has been providing mental and emotional health support across departments and teams. We offer staff an Employee Assistance Program (EAP), which is a free program that allows anyone to engage with a professional for mental health support, crisis management, addiction, and myriad of other services.

Staff and small group meetings have taken a new look during the pandemic. Besides now being on Zoom, we begin each “gathering” with a social and emotional check-in on one another. “This pandemic has taught us how to be flexible and more appreciative of each other, and how we need to do whatever it takes to continue to serve our mission in the community.”

Flexibility and empathy between staff members have become essential. “We have become stronger, leaning on each other throughout this crisis. The challenges we have faced together this year have cultivated relationships and a new respect for the part we all play in fulfilling our mission.”

The selfless work produced by our staff throughout this pandemic shows how we live our mission daily. We are providing support and showing appreciation to every member of our team, making this year one of growth, learning, and unity.

Here at the J, we welcome all walks of life, regardless of race, religion, or ability. Our community’s vibrancy is made up of beautifully unique people with one common interest – living fuller and happier lives. We connect and foster these relationships through our diverse programs and impactful services.

It is widely known that our 60 & Better Senior Center works tirelessly to provide enriching (now virtual) programs as well as food security for our Meals on Wheels (MOW) and Congregate Meal clients, but many do not know about the additional ways we support our 60 & Better members.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, the 60 & Better team wanted to ensure our community was equipped with masks so they could live their lives more safely throughout this pandemic. Our team added masks to their deliveries for those who weren’t able to obtain masks themselves, even while the rest of the nation was experiencing a shortage.

Recently, the Early Childhood School (ECS) collaborated with the 60 & Better Department to ensure that the seniors they deliver food to have a sweet surprise in their next delivery to welcome in the Jewish New Year. The delivery package included personalized cards created by the ECS students, and apples and honey to symbolize the sweet New Year.

Especially true for our 60 & Better community, the J often serves as a second family to our members. Susan BradleyMeyer, Director of our 60 & Better Senior Center shared, “If someone doesn’t show up to a Zoom call or an event they registered for, we personally call them to make sure everything is okay.” She further explained, “Someone from the 60 & Better Department goes to every funeral – it’s not talked about; we just go. It’s in our values and our blood to be there for each and every one of our members.”

Exemplifying kindness isn’t just limited to one area at the J. A long-time member and now a foster parent in the Cincinnati community, Mollie Fingerman came to us with the hopes of sharing the J’s magic with her foster child by enrolling her into Camp at the J. Her foster child required financial support in order to enroll, and we worked with Mollie to provide week-to-week scholarship money so that her foster child could experience our one-of-a-kind Camp at the J. We were able to provide Mollie’s foster child new experiences by attending Camp and being wrapped in a blanket of our community’s kindness.

Mollie felt that one of the most important takeaways from Camp was that her foster child formed very special connections with not only the other campers, but also our counselors.

Our wonderful counselors whole-heartedly embody our mission – treating each camper as their own, forming instant, but meaningful connections. Mike Creemer, fondly known as “Mr. Mike” and a definite crowd favorite among the campers, radiates a special energy and connects with each of the kids on an individual level. He made Mollie’s foster child a nightlight out of a cardboard box and dinosaurs. Mollie shared that every night before she went to sleep, she made sure that her nightlight was glowing. Foster care can change in an instant, and Mollie’s foster child was only able to stay at Camp at the J for 2.5 weeks before returning to her home. But in that short time, we were able to provide her with the Camp at the J magic, with our counselors providing her with memories that will last forever.

Now she can fall asleep each night next to her glowing nightlight and have these memories to cherish for years to come.

Here at the J, we create lasting memories and experiences for our greater community; now more than ever, showing kindness and compassion throughout the organization every day.

Ask some of our current and former team members and they just might say that paying attention to details is this J’s secret sauce. Whether in times of a pandemic or just a plain old ordinary day, this J is always working, reworking, and modifying.

Whether it’s small tweaks to the Welcome Desk or adding shade to the courtyard, we work to provide an unrivaled customer experience. This remained true throughout our closure due to COVID-19 and within every step of our reopening plans. During our temporary closure, we maintained communication and engagement with our community. Through phone calls, emails, newsletters, social media, and more, we were able to keep our community informed regarding virtual opportunities during our shutdown, as well as our plans for reopening.

After being closed by the state mandate in mid-March, we reopened on June 1 and were one of the first Jewish Community Centers to reopen nationally. We maximized the opportunity and set the bar high for our phased reopening. During the time that our doors were closed, our Management team worked together to build a playbook in order to ensure safe operations throughout the pandemic. This playbook detailed our

protocols in each of our program areas, along with the new waivers and consent forms necessary in the current climate. We all worked together to implement policies and procedures that allowed for us to safely reopening, while maintaining impactful services and offerings to our community.

Every detail matters to ensure the health and safety of each person that walks into our facility. In that spirit, we created signage that lives on the floors, walls, and everywhere in-between. These efforts not only indicated new directional foot traffic patterns, but also serve as a reminder for our members to maintain a proper social distance.

Yael Newman and her family are familiar faces at the J and continued to visit throughout this time. She said, “Over the course of the pandemic, we continued to enjoy the J while maintaining a social distance; the aquatic center was a lifesaver this summer! The J is a safe place that I know we belong in; we feel safe and we feel at home.”

Every decision from programming, to fitness, to marketing, involves attention to detail and careful consideration, especially with the current state of the world. From the intensive sanitization processes our essential employees conduct day and night, to the warm greetings you receive when you walk by the Welcome Desk; we know that every interaction and detail makes a difference. Across every aspect of the J, we’ve safely reopened our doors, maintaining the exceptional member experience and setting a high standard for JCC’s across the nation to follow.

From painting collaborative art to be on display in our Under One Roof sukkah art exhibit, to showcasing films around the Greater Cincinnati area in our Jewish and Israeli Film Festival, we are constantly breaking down physical barriers to create new opportunities. Collaboration is regularly exercised across every team and department, and within our cultural arts programming here at the J, the collaborative efforts have had an especially significant impact on our community.

One of our most acclaimed events is the Jewish and Israeli Film Festival (JIFF) – a month-long event held at the beginning of the year. JIFF offers a selection of films that explore current topics that are important to our common humanity. Speakers and organizations will continue these conversations off-screen, further tying their relevancy into our personal lives. This community-facing event has evolved over the years, bringing the J outside of its walls and into the city, engaging with our neighbors in a unique way.

Frances Kahan, our Cultural Arts Manager, wholeheartedly embraces our mission, and looks at her role as being on the frontline to create connections, build bridges, and bring new programs and experiences to the broader Jewish and Cincinnati communities.

Throughout her 4 years with the J, Frannie has formed invaluable relationships that have led to numerous new events that our community has never experienced before. Frannie builds upon established relationships, such as our

ties with The Nancy & David Wolf Holocaust and Humanity Center, with whom we show a number of films at the Jewish and Israeli Film Festival that impact and educate our community on the reality of the Holocaust.

From this ongoing relationship, we also have standalone programs that dive deeper into Jewish history, utilizing their expertise in a collaborative effort serving to further educate and inform the broader community.

One of the many other relationships has been with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra (CSO) and Louis Langrée, a world-renowned French conductor and the Music Director at the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra.

As part of film festival programming, Louis discussed the documentary, “Good Thoughts, Good Words, Good Deeds: The Conductor Zubin Mehta”, speaking to his journey as a world-class conductor and his personal relationship with Zubin Mehta. We continue to work with the CSO and Louis on new collaborative events in the arts for the community to enjoy.

Another crown jewel in our arts programming is our sukkah art exhibit, Under One Roof, that invites our community to create collaborative artwork around their interpretation of each year’s theme. Miriam Karp, a very involved member at the J and in the arts community, loves Under One Roof. Miriam shared with us how the event unifies individuals and organizations through their interpretation of each year’s theme. She elaborated, “The J created a comfortable environment that empowers us to create – I love how Under One Roof allows participants to step out of their self-imposed limitations to produce a wonderfully unique exhibit for all to enjoy.” This year’s theme, “Together Apart”, was chosen because of these unprecedented times, and asks participants to express and interpret how these words relate to their personal experiences during the current pandemic.

Filling our sukkah with unique and meaningful artwork, all connected through the common theme from across our greater community, symbolizes the beauty of collaboration and the different perspectives and experiences it brings.

Whether it’s the much-anticipated Jewish Community Night at the Ballet, or a drive-in film festival with diverse partners, we maximize our connections and opportunities through ongoing collaboration. Frannie reflects, “The arts are universal, connecting people no matter who they are or where they are from. Representing the Jewish community through the arts can change hearts and minds by creating personal experiences, helping us move forward in achieving our mission.”

Through collaboration and inclusion, we are creating more opportunities that allow individuals to live happier and fuller lives, while creating a more vibrant Jewish Community.

For 89 years, our multi-faceted community center has served the Greater Cincinnati area. From the minute our doors opened, we established a tradition of innovation; never standing still or being satisfied with the status quo in any area of the organization.

Innovation to some means having the newest, top-of-the-line fitness equipment, but that’s only a small part of it. To fully fulfill our core-value of innovation, we continuously evolve with purpose and intention, anticipating and satisfying the needs and wants of our community before they are broadly evident.

Our historical innovations span from tweaking menus to address dietary needs to evolving the J Classic from a small golf outing to an all-day event that nearly quadrupled fundraising revenue.

Our ability to honor deeply rooted and beloved traditions while exploring new ideas has resulted in 89 successful years, initiating industry-leading programs and services across all departments.

This year has put our abilities to the test with the wave of COVID-19 flooding our lives, forcing us to completely pivot all efforts overnight. Whether it’s installing the newest hands-free thermographic camera to handle temperature checks, or lively virtual discussions over relevant topics such as Netflix’s series, “Unorthodox”, we continue to uphold our values and mission throughout the most challenging times.

Having built our foundation on reoccurring programs, annual events, and traditions, we quickly got to work on how to serve our community virtually and continue to adapt to the

ever-changing climate this pandemic has placed us in. From mid-March, when we had to physically shut our doors, each department worked collaboratively, creating virtual and remote programs that connect our members and community one to another so they live happier and healthier lives.

Melissa Shrimplin, our 60 & Better Program Manager, created a seamless onboarding process to ensure the 60 & Better community could access our newly established virtual platform. Melissa elaborated and said, “Not only are our members eager to continue our programs virtually, they are so interested to stay connected, and they learned the tech side of things very quickly! I love that you truly can never stop learning.” Our team’s persistent exploration and innovation to discover of new ways for engagement has led to us serve the largest virtual audience in our history.

Innovation through virtual engagement spans across all of our departments. Our Fitness Department understood the necessity to provide remote fitness classes and training to our community throughout the pandemic. Our fitness classes and programs offer much more than physical activity, they strengthen our immune system and provide a social outlet with others in our community. Utilizing Facebook as the primary platform, our trainers and instructors live-stream fitness classes that range from High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) to Chair Yoga for those seeking a less intense workout.

Our long-time member, Richard “Rick” Stern recalls the beginning of quarantine as being “grim and isolating.” Rick attributes his newfound healthy mental and physical state to our online fitness classes.

“I hurt if I don’t exercise. . . the Functional Fitness and Chair Yoga classes are really great. The J has done a wonderful job – I look forward to the virtual fitness classes every day.” Rick further mentioned that our fitness programs get him out of bed in the morning, providing him with value and interactions throughout his day.

Throughout our continuous exploration to best serve our members, we discovered that we can serve some within our doors and others at home, but there is also a new niche market for members who want a hybrid between the two. We worked cross-departmentally to install the outdoor fitness tent that provides an open-air, socially-distanced workout area to help our members continue on their respective health and wellness journeys. To ensure we didn’t disrupt the current class schedule, our Fitness team crafted a variety of new classes to help members reach their fitness goals in an environment they’re comfortable in.

Through our dedication to our core-value of innovation, we addressed our community’s needs, supporting them throughout these challenging times. No matter what obstacle we have faced, our solutions continuously challenged the status quo, providing support to our community when they needed us most.
