Dear Matters Magazine Readers,

There is something special about picking up a magazine and getting immersed in its stories. The tactile feeling of the luxurious paper between your fingertips and that novel smell of printed paper. The absolute satisfaction of flicking through articles for the following headline to capture your attention. The experience of reading a magazine feels elegant and sophisticated and is a call back to simpler times when algorithms did not generate or optimise articles, they were curated and crafted by professionals.

The content is elevated and prestigious. Honour is evoked when you are featured in a magazine. When you share the page with the legends before you, you share your story and advice among true business and entrepreneurship leaders.

No other medium provides that exclusivity of recognition. It still means something to be on a cover and featured in a magazine.

My role is simple. Invite business leaders to contribute to the magazine and share their prestigious content with the Sunshine Coast community. We have an incredible team to partner with our contributors and advertisers to craft exceptional, must-read content. Distribution and promotion of that content are essential. In 2024, we will publish three issues of Matters Magazine. We will hand-deliver 12,000 copies to over 5,000 locations across the Sunshine Coast, from Beerwah to Pomona. We have launched a new mobile app, redefined our social and email strategies, and partnered with the leading media, chambers of commerce, industry and business groups on the coast.

“IT’S THE TACTILE FEELING OF THE LUXURIOUS PAPER BETWEEN YOUR FINGERTIPS THAT GIVES YOU ABSOLUTE SATISFACTION AS YOU FLICK THROUGH ARTICLES FOR THE FOLLOWING HEADLINE TO CAPTURE YOUR ATTENTION.”

I have led businesses and high-performing teams throughout my career— almost 20 years in marketing. Over that time, there has been enormous change. But the fundamentals have not changed. To build trust with an audience, you must lead with value—authentic, genuine, and helpful content. The right content shared with the right audience at the right time remains the pillar of content marketing, regardless of the media or platform chosen.

To contribute or advertise in a magazine is to commit yourself to creating premium content worthy of the page. An article you are proud to frame and place on your wall. To share it among colleagues and customers as they enter your space. It is a privilege. Anyone can post on social media, but very few can publish in a magazine.

As we celebrate the magazine’s rich 17-year history, we embrace the new beginning of Matters Magazine. Settle in, grab a warm beverage and take this time to be inspired by the stories that matter from the business leaders of the Sunshine Coast.

Thank you for choosing to read Matters Magazine.

“ WITH EACH NEW BEGINNING, WE ARE REMINDED THAT STAGNATION IS THE ANTITHESIS OF GROWTH. THE CHALLENGES THAT COME WITH UNCERTAINTY ARE NOT STUMBLING BLOCKS BUT STEPPING STONES THAT PROPEL US TOWARD CREATIVITY AND IMPROVEMENT.”

Dear Matters Magazine Readers,

As we step into the dawn of a new era for MATTERS, I am honoured to share this moment with each one of you, our esteemed readers, partners, sponsors and contributors. Our theme for Issue 105 delves into the profound notion of new beginnings.

In the vast expanse of life and business, the allure of a fresh start is magnetic. We teeter on the edge of uncertainty, a thrilling precipice, where trepidation dances with excitement. It is amidst the challenges that lie ahead that we unearth the essence of growth, innovation, and the unyielding spirit of entrepreneurship. Embarking on new ventures resembles navigating uncharted waters. The currents, unpredictable and at times daunting, also offer unmatched opportunities for learning and forging new paths. During these uncertain times, we unearth our resilience, our adaptive prowess, and our innate capacity to overcome.

As the new editor of MATTERS, I am acutely aware of the diverse experiences our readers encounter in their professional and personal journeys, for I have had many of my own. From the seasoned entrepreneur to the budding professional taking their inaugural steps, a common thread unites us—the pursuit of progress and the fortitude to embrace the unknown that lies ahead. The world of Sunshine Coast business is ever evolving, and with each new beginning, we are reminded that stagnation is the antithesis of growth. The challenges that come with uncertainty are not stumbling blocks but stepping stones that propel us toward creativity and improvement. It is through these trials that we refine our strategies, sharpen our skills, and emerge stronger than ever before.

As entrepreneurs, we seek the thrill of venturing into unexplored territory. This is matched only by the potential rewards that await those of us who dare to dream big. It takes a special kind of tenacity to turn ambiguity into an ally, and to transform challenges into opportunities. Our cover story features Kira Steinhaus of MyHaus Property Group – a woman who embodies this indomitable spirit of determination. She teaches us that embarking on a new journey may be demanding, yet the endeavour proves worthwhile, particularly when legacies are established and the enduring influence remains sustainable. As we voyage these uncharted waters together, let us remember that it is precisely during moments of uncertainty that greatness is often revealed.

The pages of MATTERS are a testament to the power of resilience, innovation, and the unwavering spirit of our community. In every story shared, in every insight offered by our contributors, resides inspiration for those embarking on their own new beginnings. As we embrace the unpredictability of the future, let us do so with a sense of purpose, affirming that every challenge is an invitation to grow, every setback is an opportunity to bounce back stronger, and every new beginning is a canvas waiting for us to paint the masterpiece of our collective success.

Here's to new beginnings, to the thrill of the unknown, and to the unwavering human spirit that propels us forward.

STEINHAUS PAVES A SUSTAINABLE PATH IN PROPERTY DEVELOPMENT

KIRA
I“ WE CAN BEGIN NOW TO TRANSFORM THE WAY WE THINK. IT CANNOT JUST BE ABOUT PROPERTY VALUE; IT MUST BE ABOUT THE VALUE WE PLACE ON OUR PLANET AND ON OUR FUTURE.”

n the ever-evolving world of real estate, where choices leave indelible marks on both landscapes and legacies, MyHaus Property Group stands at the forefront of innovation and sustainability. At its helm is the visionary principal, Kira Steinhaus, a stalwart advocate for environmentally conscious property development. In an industry often measured by profit margins, Kira's mission transcends traditional paradigms, weaving together profitability and ecological mindfulness. Her influence extends beyond the boardroom, as she tirelessly educates clients and fellow real estate professionals on the transformative potential of sustainable practices, igniting a paradigm shift in the way we envision and execute property development.

With two eco-conscious residential property developments to her creditKenLea Estate in Woombye and Abbott’s Road in Palmwoods - Kira is rapidly forging a sustainable path forward, simultaneously maximising the potential for land development while minimising the impact on our environment. Using innovative design and establishing sustainable covenants regarding building materials, landscaping, and water-saving measures, MyHaus is pioneering the way forward to a greener future.

How and why did this unique gem in the wilderness of real estate evolve into an ambassador for sustainable property development?

CHILDREN OF THE LAND

Kira’s upbringing was not just a series of memories, but a tapestry woven with outdoor adventures and a deep connection to the earth. Growing up between Holland and Australia, Kira recalls spending most of her playtime with Mum in the garden. “We’d be running outside, loving the plants and animals, often reminded not to hurt anything. It was fun having our hands in the dirt, really being part of nature and creating that communion with our land.”

Years later, as a mother of two adventurous nature-loving boys, Kira believes the less computer time the better, preferring outdoor activities like nurturing vegetable seedlings and pioneering in the forest.

“I’d rather they climb a tree or get their hands a little dirty than be attached to an iPad,” she says. “The lessons they learn transfer to their actions and behaviours with others. They are kind, considerate, and compassionate boys and I feel that has a lot to do with their connection to the earth.”

ASBESTOS SHOCK SPARKS INSPIRATION

The turning point for Kira came not in a boardroom, but in the innocence of play while playing in the dirt with her two toddlers beneath their rented home in the Sunshine Coast hinterland. Little did she know that this ordinary day would reveal a lurking danger – asbestos. The shock, the fear, and the realisation that her children’s health hung in the balance ignited a fire within her.

“I know that exposure can lead to longterm adverse health effects 30 years down the road, so it was quite daunting. But what was more disturbing was that there was no accountability from the property management company or the owner of the home,” she says.

“I started doing research of my own and had the council come inspect and tape off my property, forcing an evacuation of our home. It was serious!” Ultimately, Kira educated the agency and the owners about the process. That’s when it became clear something had to be done. Simply handing in the keys and receiving no apology or compensation she said, “This is not good enough.”

But where there is adversity, there is inspiration. Coming from a family dedicated

to living harmoniously with the land, her mission statement revealed itself: to create a better world for her boys and educate people on the benefits of sustainable property development and healthier home design. This moment of reckoning prompted a new beginning - the birth of MyHaus Property Group - and a response to the negligence and transactional nature of real estate that had failed to prioritise the well-being of her family.

IT'S NOT A TRANSACTION, IT’S A JOURNEY

As an aspiring agent, Kira recalled watching her mother conduct transaction after transaction over her 17 years in the industry. She was called Ms. Consistency for her steadfast efficiency and professionalism. As a buyer and former tenant, Kira has reflected on the lack of compassionate customer service and follow-up, and pervasive sense that clients are merely numbers pushed through inspections as rapidly as possible. Together, she and her mum have changed their philosophy and made a massive impact with their eco-friendly marketing practices and a

relationship-focussed approach on the journey with their clients.

“It’s about nurturing a relationship between people and the properties they inhabit. We exist to transform your perception of property. We are a fullservice real estate company, but we are not agents – we are influencers, inspiring and educating land and homeowners, investors, and industry professionals on how to make better, more conscious choices in property development,” Kira says.

A SYMPHONY OF COLLABORATION

Named after the principles of passive house design, where European influence meets Australian landscapes, MyHaus is rewriting the narrative of property development. Each structure harmonises with nature and stands as a testament to conscious living. Her clients are those aspiring to leave a lasting imprint while safeguarding the delicate balance of our planet.

It’s a team effort. Collaborating with a network of consultants, including designers, architects, builders, and environmental experts, Kira and MyHaus apply best

practices and the highest standards to create legacies that embrace and protect the land on which we stand.

Kira emerges as a formidable force, not merely a leader in sustainable property development but a catalyst for change within the real estate sphere. Her strength, passion, and unyielding commitment to integrity propel MyHaus to the forefront of a new era in property development. This is more than a business; it’s a movement led by an influencer whose progressive ideas put people and the environment first, and as a result, maximise the value and potential for the land.

“I know the words development and sustainability don’t usually go hand-inhand. But I will always be conscious in my choices and how I represent my clients, from the beginning and throughout our journey together,” Kira says.

“We can begin now to transform the way we think. It cannot just be about property value; it must be about the value we place on our planet and on our future.” u

Transform your pain into purpose with Ann Noler Harris

“ENERGY MEDICINE IS USING ONE’S OWN BODY ENERGY AND UNIVERSAL ENERGY TO SUPPORT HEALING. IT HAS BEEN AROUND FOR CENTURIES AND OVER 55 PER CENT OF PEOPLE ARE NOW USING ENERGY MEDICINE BECAUSE IT IS NON-INVASIVE AND DOES NOT REQUIRE PRESCRIPTION DRUGS.”

BY

The day Ann Noler Harris met a labrador retriever named Ella, a seeing eye dog with terminal cancer, her life changed. At six years old, after a life dedicated to the service of those living with disability, Ella was retired from work due to her diagnosis and poor prognosis. Traditional veterinary medicine had done all it could, and now it was time for Ella to simply live out her days with the best quality life possible in the care of Ann and her family.

FROM SCEPTIC TO BELIEVER

In her eBook, The Belief and Power of Energy Medicine, Ann describes the moment she changed from sceptic to believer. “Watching Ella walk down the driveway towards me, I felt my heart melt. There was no spark in her eyes, and she seemed to have lost her passion for life. I felt a shift in my body and in that moment, I knew I was not going to let her die.” Fuelled by a desire to save her beloved Ella when Western medicine offered no hope, Ann delved into studying alternative medicine and attended spiritual workshops. Originally from England and having had a career in the corporate business world, taking the journey into holistic healing was risky, but she had nothing to lose, except Ella.

Ella became Ann’s study partner, creating an extraordinary connection that transcended the boundaries of conventional healing. The healing techniques Ann applied to Ella marked the start of a remarkable transformation. The spark returned to Ella’s eyes, and her passion for life was rekindled.

What began as a temporary commitment to care for a retired service dog evolved into a profound journey of healing and self-discovery. What was meant to be a three-week adoption period of Ella turned into another five-and-a-half years of joyful living for Ann and her dog.

SECRET WEAPON OF SUCCESS

After years of study, Ann became a Reiki Master, an Advanced Metaphysical Anatomy practitioner, a Medical Intuitive, and a Certified Life Coach. Her unique blend of qualifications has become her “secret weapon of success.” From canines to people, including her husband, who had suffered injury and pain from a serious accident, Ann uses energy medicine to upgrade the quality of life for her clients, helping them release blocks, alleviating physical pain and emotional stress.

“Energy medicine is using one’s own body energy and universal energy to support healing. It has been around for centuries and over 55 per cent of people are now using energy medicine because it is noninvasive and does not require prescription drugs,” says Ann.

Many of her clients are high achievers – they want better results, they want to make an impact, they want more money, they are consumed by their business and career. Often, they undergo transformative changes, such as career shifts or stepping into leadership roles.

“One of my clients, a professional woman, presented to me with depression and shoulder, neck and back pain. She also experienced ongoing financial stress and turmoil within her family relationships; she felt trapped and miserable in her life. She’d tried many different modalities and medications to relieve her pain, but never really got to the root cause of what was happening.

Our main goal in her sessions was to release her anger and resistance to letting go of the pain that resulted from childhood trauma and failed marriages. During our time working together her pain resolved and new opportunities presented themselves. She invested in herself and did the inner work that was needed to live her best life with her new man. It was a wonderful, positive outcome.”

THE RIPPLE EFFECT

Ann believes women are the centre of the home and their pain causes a ripple effect, impacting family dynamics, relationships, even pets’ behaviour in the home environment. “Ninety per cent of the time, I see women focussing on their partner’s and children’s happiness, and if they’re not, they believe there is something wrong and they are not doing a good job. This begins an emotional roller coaster ride and a life of pushing through and sometimes hiding their pain. However, when she begins the work internally and starts to understand the triggers in her environment, everything changes. I take my clients through a gentle process because navigating such changes can be daunting. It takes courage.”

Some heal generational pain that’s been passed on from parents and grandparents. Others overcome addictions, breaking cycles of alcoholism and dependence on anti-anxiety medication. She has worked with policemen and military servicemen suffering from PTSD who’ve been through or witnessed significant trauma, many who have exhausted conventional avenues of therapy and now seek a holistic understanding of their pain.

“When someone has experienced trauma, sexual abuse or anything that has impacted them, they don’t want to relive it. They don’t want to re-experience the feelings that come up. By telling the same story repeatedly they’re just imprinting their neural pathways by replaying the tape recording in their head,” Ann says. “It becomes automatic. I work with them energetically to get to the root cause. That’s when the healing begins.”

A GLOBAL GUIDING LIGHT

Ann’s virtual healing sessions have broken down geographical barriers, attracting clients from diverse backgrounds and locations all over the world. Her ability to connect with individuals on a soul level, irrespective of physical proximity, underscores the universal nature of energy healing. The transformative stories from Ann’s clients speak volumes about the efficacy of her methodologies. From chronic pain to emotional trauma, individuals have experienced remarkable results, often when traditional methods fell short. She also works with groups of up to ten at a time.

“It works because energy has no boundaries,” Ann explains. “I contain us all in the energy and the energy goes where it needs to. There is energy all around us and we are connecting to it all the time.”

Her expertise has been acknowledged in numerous magazines, live radio interviews, podcasts, and book publications. She received the Ymag Award as one of the Top 10 Women to Watch in 2020 and has been featured in Women Inspired, a compilation highlighting women on the Sunshine Coast making a difference in the world. But, beyond accolades and recognition, Ann’s ongoing impact is seen in the lives she continues to touch.

With Ella as her guiding force, Ann Noler Harris has forged a path in the realm of energy medicine that transcends the conventional. Her journey is a testament to the transformative power of healing, inspiring business professionals to explore holistic approaches. As the ripple effect of Ann’s impact continues to spread, the narrative of turning “pain into purpose” becomes a compelling call to embrace transformation through energy medicine. u

GLOBAL AMBITION AND

EXPERTISE

Melissa Schembri, Daniel Rees and Sotheby’s marriage of success

“ WE TREAT BOTH PARTIES WITH TRANSPARENCY AND RESPECT. WE REALISE IT IS ONE OF THE MOST SIGNIFICANT TRANSACTIONS IN LIFE. WE LOVE TO HELP OUR BUYERS SECURE THEIR BEAUTIFUL NEW HOME AND SELLERS MOVE FORWARD TO THEIR NEXT CHAPTER.”
MELISSA SCHEMBRI

In the heart of Maroochydore, Queensland Sotheby's International Realty has planted its roots, unveiling a new chapter. The driving forces behind this expansion are no strangers to success. As life and business partners Melissa Schembri and Daniel Rees steer the ship with a vision that combines passion for real estate, profound local industry expertise and the opportunity to provide a global selling platform for lifestyle properties on the Sunshine Coast.

A JOURNEY OF DISCOVERY

Melissa and Daniel's journey to the Directorship of Sotheby's Sunshine Coast (Maroochydore to Caloundra) was not merely a career move but a strategic alignment of values and lifetime aspirations. Mel reflects on the past seven years of her real estate career. “I gained the attention of Sotheby’s when I made the Sunshine Coast’s highest residential sale of $20.5 million for a 21-acre estate in Buderim, while also breaking waterfront, street,

16 | MATTERS ISSUE 105
NEW BEGINNINGS | Feature

and suburb records for over $80 million worth of property in one year. When they initially approached me, I wasn’t ready to make a change.”

Enter Daniel Rees, a seasoned entrepreneur with 26 years’ experience in real estate and finance, specialising in high net-worth clients, property investors, and Melissa’s new partner. With a shared love of working in property and helping others achieve their real estate dreams, Dan and Mel decided that they wanted to combine their skill sets and work together as a couple.

A PERFECT MATCH

Melissa acknowledges the excitement they felt when they realised that this was the ideal path they should be on. The allure of working with the world’s number one luxury real estate brand that could elevate their client’s property to another level, coupled with the prospect of coaching and nurturing a team, proved irresistible. The decision was made. Melissa and Daniel embraced the opportunity to become not only agents but mentors within Sotheby's International Realty.

A GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE WITH A LOCAL FOCUS

Amid inquiries about their choice of Sotheby's, Mel and Dan articulate a compelling rationale. They believe Sotheby's fills a significant gap in the market by seamlessly connecting high networth clients across the globe to the local Sunshine Coast market. The agency's global database, collaborative national offices, and international marketing reach, position it as the premier luxury real estate agency in the world.

They acknowledge the changing dynamics of the local real estate market, with more people seeking a shift in lifestyle post-pandemic. The Sunshine Coast, with its perfect blend of coastal charm and urban convenience, emerges as an ideal destination for increasing numbers of interstate and international migrants. Simultaneously, they understand the financial challenges this influx of population brings.

A tremendous advantage they now have with Sotheby’s is being able to fund everything necessary for their selling client’s needs, to produce an optimal result. “With Sotheby’s, we can fund everything to get you set up for a maximum result – styling

and staging, marketing, advertising and small refurbishments. It’s like a deferred payment option, requiring no payments until settlement.”

Sotheby’s is a brand that has stood the test of time and epitomises luxury in real estate, yet Mel and Dan are quick to dispel any misconceptions. They proudly state that their expertise extends beyond the opulent mansions and waterfront estates. They list and sell properties of all shapes and sizes, anywhere on the Sunshine Coast. This includes everything from a small unit in Caloundra, to a block of land in Maleny, or an executive Minyama waterfront. Sotheby’s offers the same premium service to all.

NAVIGATING COMPLEXITY WITH A HUMAN TOUCH

Bringing a wealth of comprehensive knowledge to the table allows them to navigate complex deals with finesse. Their backgrounds in property law, life coaching and finance empower them to offer a level of professional insight that goes beyond the typical real estate transaction. Navigating the delicate balance between buyer and seller interests, they articulate their role as compassionate and considerate facilitators, working towards a win-win situation, ensuring informed decision-making and a smooth transaction process.

“We treat both parties with transparency and respect. We realise it is one of the most significant transactions in life and we love to help our buyers secure their beautiful new home and sellers move forward to their next chapter.”

With a commitment to growth and an unwavering dedication to client satisfaction, Melissa Schembri and Daniel Rees are set to redefine the narrative of luxury real estate on the Sunshine Coast and encourage locals to give them a call to receive an invitation for a ‘seat at the table’ in their Agent selection, to showcase what they have to offer.

As Sotheby's International Realty's Maroochydore office emerges as a force in the industry, Mel and Dan position themselves not just as real estate agents but as lifestyle ambassadors and global real estate advisors, sharing the allure of the Sunshine Coast with a global audience. u

“We look at the property and we work out whether it’s going to be an auction property or a private treaty sale with potential multiple offers. One size does not fit all. We are not the keepers of price, but we discuss with you the best option to achieve a maximum sale price.” Daniel

PROMOTION

“Effective marketing strategies and exposure are essential for reaching a wide audience of potential buyers. Leveraging our national and international networks, we maximise exposure and attract more qualified buyers. By creating competition, we achieve a higher price.” Daniel

PEOPLE

“We have so much fun selling property. Dan and I have a keen sense of humour and love the people we get to meet. We are highly experienced, so we can afford to relax and be genuine while talking to people. It’s an interesting marriage because we’ve got a very established, long-standing brand in Sotheby’s, yet we bring this whole different vibe and energy to what we do, and we love it!” Melissa www.queenslandsothebysrealty.com

10 experts share valuable lessons learned FROM STARTING A NEW BUSINESS

Mentors can be hard to come by; however, at MATTERS, business professionals are part of a community dedicated to education and collaboration. Together, they have years of experience and wisdom they are willing to share. We’ve asked 10 Matters Magazine entrepreneurs what they believe is one of the most valuable lessons they learned whilst staring a new business.

For me, starting a business mirrors the rush before stepping onto the stage - a blend of nerves and anticipation, giving way to overwhelming joy and pride once the performance begins. Drawing on my experience as both a doctor and a performer, I recognise the chemistry behind these feelings of fear and excitement - it’s all the effect of adrenaline and your interpretation of the signals your brain is sending. So, my advice is to redirect your fear into exhilaration by embracing the joy of creation, conquering obstacles, and ultimately achieving success. Let’s see what our experts have to say!

HOBBY VERSUS BUSINESS

MIND YOUR CASHFLOW

“You need to understand your business cashflow intimately. It’s not enough to have your accountant prepare a cashflow forecast and then put it away. You need to review and revise often, especially in the early days. There are some great accounting software tools available to track your forecast and overlay how this compares to your actual revenue and costs. Knowing when you are running at a profit or a loss is critical to your future success and will allow you to be swift in making changes.”

“Turning a hobby into a business is an enticing prospect, blurring the lines between passion and profit. I’m an avid artist who wanted to become a professional one. However, there are compelling reasons why a hobby should remain just that – a hobby. The transition from leisure pursuit to livelihood often strips away the joy and spontaneity that initially drew you to the hobby. Hobbies don’t always align with market demands or possess the scalability required for business success. There may be financial risks and uncertainties that can overshadow the intrinsic rewards of the activity. Maintaining a clear distinction between leisure and work allows individuals to preserve their passion without the constraints of commercial objectives.”

COMMUNICATION BUILDS TRUST

“The pivotal lesson in launching my business centres on the paramount role of consistent communication with clients. Sustaining regular touch points proves transformative; even initial rejections can evolve into eventual affirmatives. The key lies in perseverance and understanding that a ‘no’ might simply signify a ‘not yet.’ By maintaining an open dialogue, I discovered the power of fostering relationships turns potential clients’ hesitations into opportunities. Regular communication serves as the linchpin for trust-building and reshaping perceptions, ultimately steering the course towards successful collaborations.”

MARKETING

DREAM, REALISTICALLY

“A common mistake I’ve observed is people transitioning from paid employment to entrepreneurship without fully understanding the risks involved. Follow your dream but be realistic. My key strategies are:

• Retain supportive employment and progressively reduce your working days.

• Address the unconscious blocks that can hold you back.

• Keep your energy in receiving mode so clients come to you easily and effortlessly.

• Enjoy what you do and know why you are doing it.

Most businesses fail in the first year and the owner can end up with debt and no business. It doesn’t have to be this way. Success is waiting for you.”

“Like selling a property, I believe that one of the most important aspects of starting a new business is to have a clear and concise marketing strategy. You must know who your ideal customers are, what their needs and preferences are, and how your service/product can solve their problems. Having a strong brand identity that reflects your values and personality, and creating a consistent message across all marketing channels is paramount. Finally, like selling a property, you need to remember that marketing is an ongoing process that requires continuous effort and adaptation.”

MELISSA SCHEMBRI, Director - Maroochydore

FOLLOW YOUR PASSION

“Someone once told me that starting a business is one per cent inspiration and 99 per cent perspiration. I strongly disagree! If you love what you do, then it flips this figure on its head. Now you are energised daily by 99 per cent inspiration, and it doesn’t feel like work. So, if you ask me, ‘What’s the most important lesson I’ve learnt whilst starting a business?’ then it’s, ‘Go with your passion.’ Don’t do it for the money. Don’t do it for the fame. Do it because, if you had the choice to do anything today, this is what you would do – 100 times over. Enjoy!”

YOUR BRAND, YOUR STORY

ACCOUNTABILITY, STRUCTURE AND INTEGRITY

“These would be the three points I have learnt the most from, in myself and in others. In anything in life, you must have a high level of accountability. We must do what we say we’ll do and be there when those who rely on us need us, particularly as industry professionals. Clear structure paves a way and holds a solid foundation from which to grow. I have learnt from making many mistakes; I am still finding my way through structure. The most important lesson to speak of is maintaining integrity in your values in business. Then it is easy to follow your passion and be true to yourself. It is harder to constantly try keeping up with the Joneses. Be authentic; be awesome.”

“When starting a new business, ensure you understand how the strategy behind your brand can make or break the business. Having a solid strategy in place to differentiate you from your competitors will position your brand front and centre in the minds of your customers. A brand is more than a logo. By taking a strategyfirst approach to brand development you will create a brand that resonates with your customer and creates leads and sales over you just simply liking your logos. Your brand should tell your story, visually and emotionally. It’s that story that will create your success.”

STRATEGIC FOCUS

STAY CALM. STAY CONSISTENT.

“As business owners we can face many challenges on any given day. I learned that nothing is as bad as it seems at the time, so don’t stress over the little things. Stay calm, focused and do what you do best for your customers consistently. Over time you will build trust and reap the benefits of building long term relationships.”

BEN PRICE, Managing Director Bridgewise Insurance

“Launching a business is complex, and a vital lesson I’ve learnt is the power of having a strategic focus in the following areas:

A business plan is more than a document; it’s a roadmap that you regularly revisit and refine. Financial preparedness is non-negotiable; meticulously budget for start-up and unforeseen costs. Collaboration is essential; don’t navigate the journey solo, rather build a network for invaluable support. Embrace technology to boost efficiency and enhance your customers’ experience. The ability to make a swift pivot is a secret weapon; turning challenges into opportunities is essential for thriving in a competitive landscape. Foster a culture of adaptability; it’s the key to surviving in today’s dynamic business world.”

Building a welcoming community EMBRACING DIVERSITY ON THE SUNSHINE COAST

The Sunshine Coast has long been celebrated for its pristine beaches, lush hinterland, and vibrant community spirit. However, beneath its picturesque facade lies a rich tapestry of cultural diversity and migration stories that contribute to the region's dynamic social and economic landscape. We often don’t hear of these, yet each year, thousands of multicultural individuals embark on a journey to this idyllic region, driven by dreams of a brighter future.

Luisa Lopez’s journey from Colombia to Australia a decade ago is a testament to resilience and determination in the face of adversity. Arriving in Australia at the age of 24, with aspirations of learning English and pursuing further education in business and finance, Luisa encountered numerous obstacles along the way.

"When I landed in Sydney, I burst into tears. I thought, ‘Oh, my God, what am I doing? I don't think I can do this’," she recalls. Despite the initial uncertainties and fears, Luisa found support and kindness in unexpected places, from strangers in the airport to her host family who was instrumental in teaching her basic English.

“During my first week here, though, I didn’t leave my bedroom. I was overwhelmed with thoughts like ‘How am I going to get to school? How do I catch a bus? How am I going to get a job? This is so hard’. But I felt a lot of support coming from everywhere; that was nice," she reflects.

Luisa's experience mirrors that of many migrants who have made the Sunshine Coast their sanctuary, enriching the community with their diverse talents and aspirations. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the region's Estimated Resident Population stood at 413,218 in 2022, with 83,605 people born overseas.

Cate Gilpin, the Queensland Coordinator for Welcoming Cities, underscores the challenges faced by migrants in integrating into the Australian workforce.

"For many migrants, their international qualifications are not recognised in Australia,

posing a significant barrier to employment," Cate explains.

“In business, many experience confusion and complexity due to the different tax laws, superannuation requirements and business structures in Australia. We are working with Sunshine Coast Council to develop support programs to help migrant led businesses thrive.”

Stella Romagnoli, Program Coordinator of the Baringa Community Centre, says migrants often arrive with high hopes and dreams, but the reality of the adjustment process can be dramatic, especially when their expectations do not align with reality.

“Securing their first job is significant in their transition; it not only provides financial stability but also a sense of dignity, belonging and connection with their local community,” Stella says.

Nambour Community Centre Settlement, Engagement, and Transition Support Worker Linda Dennis emphasises the invaluable role migrants play across various sectors, from healthcare to hospitality. Linda cites the Intergenerational Report 2023 which states, "Migrants bring with them a wealth of skills and experiences. Their contributions are critical to maintaining essential services and driving economic growth. The vast majority of migrants with a permanent visa or on the skilled migration stream, are mostly between 20 and 39, highly trained and experienced, and are critical to maintain health, caring, and educational systems as well as finance, insurance, hospitality, and IT companies."

Many migrants initially need to take lowerlevel jobs to improve their English, familiarise themselves with the Australian system and integrate into the workforce gradually – like Luisa. Despite having a degree in business from a university in Colombia, she worked in cleaning, hospitality, and as a nanny while studying English.

Overcoming one challenge after another, Luisa persevered, eventually securing a scholarship for a diploma in mortgage broking at Kaplan in Brisbane. With resilience and determination, she navigated the challenges of finding employment in her desired industry and will soon be a Senior Mortgage Advisor at the Mason Finance Group on the Sunshine Coast.

"Life is not easy or fair, but just keep working. Never give up," Luisa advises.

"There are amazing people who want to help and see you succeed.”

In 2023, Sunshine Coast Council reinforced its commitment to cultural diversity and inclusion by joining the Welcoming Cities Network. Sunshine Coast Council Economic and Community Development Group Executive Greg Laverty highlights the significance of this milestone.

"Our region is home to migrants from 150 countries, with 96 different languages spoken," he says.

Programs such as the Diverse Queensland Workforce, Migrant Work Ready, and Migrant Business Ready, alongside events like the upcoming Migrant Job Fair and Business Expo in May 2024, are tangible items of the Council’s commitment to inclusivity and cultural diversity.

“Imagine the Sunshine Coast being nationally and internationally acknowledged as one of the most welcoming regions in Australia!” Greg exclaims. For Luisa Lopez, it certainly has been.

“By embracing diversity, fostering inclusivity, and championing collaboration, our region is not just welcoming migrants, it’s building a stronger, more vibrant community where we all belong,” Greg says. u

Emotional fitness: transforming our relationship with uncertainty

Emotional fitness is preparedness for the challenges, pressures, and stresses that life can bring.

First thing we must appreciate about uncertainty is that it is a precursor to all growth. Growth is a requirement of life and therefore uncertainty is something we need to remain alive and well. Unfortunately, most people correlate uncertainty with fear instead of growth. There are many reasons why people are frightened of uncertainty. What if we can change this?

People often associate uncertainty with getting out of our comfort zone. This is typically doing something we have never done before. In other words, this is doing something with zero reference points. Examples could include learning any new skill, or moving to an unknown foreign country, basically, doing something we have never done.

Uncertainty prepares us for the road ahead in our lives. It prepares us for the next level. It provides us with the skills for our ever-expanding responsibilities. Could the 2010 version of you handle your current life? Probably not. The version of my life today would completely overwhelm the 2010 version of me.

There is a big difference between getting out of our comfort zone and expanding our comfort zone. Getting out of our comfort zone normally means we are having a new experience with minimal if any reference points. In other words, it is literally entry into the unknown. It is the first time we are experiencing that thing. For example, going to an overseas non-English speaking country for the first time was getting out of my comfort zone.

I had zero past experiences (reference points) to draw on. It was literally entering the unknown. These experiences are significant for our growth. This kind of growth can be intense in a great way.

Bestselling author of the book

Courage to BE YOU – Mastering Uncertainty and the creator of the Emotional Fitness Formula.

“GROWTH IS A REQUIREMENT OF LIFE AND THEREFORE UNCERTAINTY IS SOMETHING WE NEED TO REMAIN ALIVE AND WELL.”

These experiences provide us with huge psychological growth spurts and prove to be very effective. I can still clearly remember the first time my wife and I flew to a foreign country, where we had zero reference points of experience to draw on. A month later when we returned to Australia, we both felt and knew we could handle so much more! Suddenly minor incidental things that used to challenge us, no longer bothered us.

On the other hand, expanding our comfort zone has many familiar reference points. In other words, we are having an experience that is different yet familiar at the same time. For example, even though I have been a runner for some thirty years, entering a marathon, is an expansion of comfort zone. I have the many years of experience to draw on, but in a new and unfamiliar situation. There is growth to be had here too.

The final tip here is that most people don’t like change (uncertainty), but they want to grow. All change leads to growth either immediately or sometime soon. Anytime we are facing change, see it for what it really is, a growth opportunity. We need to grow into our future, so we can handle whatever our future lives will demand.

Thank you for reading.

Across continents and cultures: a new beginning for Anita Norval

Norval Real Estate’s foray into property management is not just a business; it's a culmination of diverse, rich experiences spanning continents, cultures, and industries, all converging to provide a unique, unparalleled service to this dynamic community.

Originating from the ‘bushveld’ landscapes of South Africa, Anita Norval, Owner and Principal of Norval Real Estate in Yaroomba, has had a journey marked by profound transitions. Moving from the highstakes environment of offshore oil rigs to the nuanced, relationship-driven world of property management, she’s carried a core principle: the stewardship of valuable assets, irrespective of their nature. This transition was underpinned by a wealth of experiences that not only honed Anita’s skills in asset management, but also deepened her understanding and appreciation of the myriad cultures and perspectives she encountered. Such diversity is a cornerstone of her approach to property management, mirroring the multicultural mosaic of the Sunshine Coast.

The philosophy at Norval Real Estate is intricately tied to this ethos of diversity and inclusion. The Sunshine Coast, with its eclectic blend of nationalities, ages, and lifestyles, presents a unique canvas for their work. They do more than manage properties; they foster communities and nurture investments, applying a personalised touch that resonates with their deep-seated values of respect, empathy, and professionalism towards all.

Over a decade in Australia, Anita has embraced continuous learning and adaptation, gleaning lessons that have become integral to their approach. Adaptability, a key takeaway from Anita’s time in the offshore industry, is crucial in property management. It requires an openness to change and an ability to anticipate and meet the shifting needs of tenants and owners alike.

The art of communication, refined through her global experiences, has

proven indispensable. Clear, transparent communication fosters a foundation of trust and understanding, essential for navigating the complexities of contracts and relationships, ensuring a harmonious living environment.

Cultural sensitivity, honed through interactions with diverse nationalities, is vital in creating an inclusive, welcoming community. Understanding and respecting the unique backgrounds of our tenants and property owners enrich the fabric of our relationships, fostering a sense of belonging and mutual respect.

The principle of preventative maintenance, ingrained in Anita from managing offshore assets, translates seamlessly into property management. Proactive care of properties not only preserves their value, but also enhances tenant satisfaction, reflecting the care and attention to detail that is synonymous with Norval Real Estate.

Investing in relationships is at the heart of the Norval Real Estate philosophy. Much like the critical machinery on oil rigs, the people they work with are indispensable to their success. Building positive, enduring relationships with tenants turns properties into homes and fosters long-term occupancy, contributing to the well-being of our community.

To property owners, they offer the advice to view your investment through the lens of empathy and care, recognising its role in the lives of your tenants. To tenants, they suggest embracing your rental as a home, a space that reflects your respect and care, enhancing your quality of life and contributing to a positive community atmosphere.

Norval Real Estate, with its foundation in diverse experiences and a commitment to excellence, are more than just property managers. They are custodians of homes and facilitators of new beginnings, ensuring every property they oversee is a testament to their journey, values and vision for a community where every individual feels at home.

Financial success: a blueprint for bookkeeping bliss

Effective bookkeeping is more than just crunching numbers; it's about building a robust financial infrastructure that will support your business's growth and longevity. Christine Genocchio, owner of Imperium Corporate Services, emphasises the critical role of skilled bookkeepers and Business Activity Statement (BAS) agents in ensuring that a business's financial records are not only accurate but also compliant with regulatory requirements.

Christine shares her blueprint for bookkeeping bliss and explains why setting up your bookkeeping software correctly is a crucial step on the path to success:

1 A CLEAR FINANCIAL PICTURE FOR INFORMED DECISION-MAKING

Accurate and timely financial data is the lifeblood of any successful business. Properly set up accounting/bookkeeping software provides a clear financial picture that enables entrepreneurs to budget effectively, forecast future needs, and identify trends in their business. It's like having a roadmap for strategic growth.

With a well-organised system in place, business owners can focus on their core competencies and strategic planning, confident that their financial affairs are in capable hands. This allows them to make informed decisions that drive their business forward, rather than spending precious time sifting through disorganised records.

2 COMPLIANCE: THE NON-NEGOTIABLE ASPECT

Staying compliant with tax laws and regulations is a non-negotiable aspect of running a business. Tax laws are constantly changing, and non-compliance can lead to hefty penalties and audits that can be detrimental to your business. This is where professional bookkeepers and BAS agents shine.

A skilled bookkeeper/BAS agent remains

up to date with the ever-evolving tax landscape, ensuring that your business stays on the right side of the law. Moreover, when tax filing season arrives, having properly managed bookkeeping simplifies the process, saving you time and reducing stress during critical periods. Compliance is not just about avoiding penalties; it's about safeguarding your business's reputation and financial health.

3 EFFICIENCY AND ACCOUNTABILITY

Streamlined bookkeeping isn't just about accuracy; it's about efficiency and accountability within your organisation. A systematic approach to record-keeping promotes transparency, instilling confidence in stakeholders, including investors, lenders, and even customers.

When your books are in order, it becomes easier to track expenses, manage cash flow, and monitor the financial health of your business. Employees are more likely to take their responsibilities seriously when they see that financial matters are being managed professionally.

4 THE INVESTMENT IN LONGEVITY

Imperium Corporate Services understands the importance of getting your books right throughout your entrepreneurial journey. Their services not only ensure accuracy and compliance but also empower business owners to make informed decisions, boost efficiency, and build trust with stakeholders.

In the grand scheme of things, investing in a bookkeeper or BAS agent is an investment in the longevity of your business. It lays the groundwork for financial stability, growth, and compliance. By prioritising accurate and streamlined bookkeeping, you set your business on a trajectory for success from the word go.

Your positioning strategy: the critical role of websites

Your website is the home of all your marketing efforts. If you are starting something new or making a change in your business, start with an update to your website.

Websites often display generic content and act as mere placeholders that fail to resonate or inspire action. Does your website answer the most critical question a visitor has – why choose you? Not an easy question to answer. The answer to this question will dictate every choice you make in marketing.

YOUR POSITIONING STRATEGY

A positioning strategy aims to establish the defining characteristic of a brand in the consumer's mind influencing their perception. It effectively communicates your brand's competitive advantage. In other words, what do you want to be known for?

Step 1: Competitive analysis. Begin with a thorough exploration of your competition. Understand what offerings are available to your audience and identify the strengths and weaknesses of your competitors. Be inspired by them to bring something different.

Step 2: Understand decision making. Gain insights into your target market's decisionmaking process. What factors influence their choices? Examine competitor reviews and utilise tools like Answer the Public to uncover the queries and concerns they bring to search engines regarding services like yours.

Step 3: Unique Value Proposition (UVP). Pinpoint the singular value you provide that sets you apart. Your positioning could pivot on various facets like customer service excellence, unparalleled convenience, competitive pricing, superior quality, community focus, innovative features, catering to an underserved niche, or a commitment to sustainability.

Step 4: Crafting your narrative. With your UVP defined, weave your narrative. Adopt the hero's journey framework, positioning your customer as the protagonist. Chart their path from recognising a need through the challenges they face to the moment they find your solution. Illustrate how choosing you

amidst a sea of alternatives uniquely satisfies their quest.

THE CRITICAL ROLE OF WEBSITES

Your website is not just a platform; it's the narrative of why you are the preferred choice. Within the crucial first seven seconds, it must articulate a captivating story that resonates with your audience, compelling them to choose you.

The impact of a static, uninspired website extends beyond lost opportunities. It strikes at the heart of your brand's credibility and growth potential. An underwhelming website often results in swift disengagement, leading to eroded trust, a diluted competitive edge, and a notable decline in conversions and sales. Consider these updates:

A captivating headline will immediately reassure visitors that they're in the right place. It must reflect understanding and offer solutions, establishing a connection from the outset.

Choose evocative imagery that encapsulates your unique value proposition. A personal photo, for instance, can showcase your personality and authenticity, triggering an emotional response and establishing a personal connection.

Establish credibility and trust before visitors invest time in your content—utilise social proof like testimonials, certifications, and accolades. Ensure your website's design is professional and intuitive, mirroring your brand's essence.

Create a narrative journey that acknowledges their challenges and underscores the urgency of addressing them. Detail the collaboration process, showcasing your solutions and reinforcing the reasons to choose you. Highlight the benefits of this partnership and simplify the next steps for deeper engagement, whether through free consultations, webinars, or other valuable resources.

Ideas to reality: the alchemy of entrepreneurship

As an entrepreneur, your journey from a mere concept to a thriving company is a path fraught with challenges and uncertainties. However, Keely White, the Founder and CEO of Liinchpin, is a maestro in transforming entrepreneurial dreams into successful realities. With over $1 billion in revenue added to Australian businesses, Keely's expertise and insights have been monumental.

For Keely, the magic of entrepreneurship lies in the process of creating something out of nothing. It's akin to the art of alchemy, where an idea takes form and substance, guided by the hands of a visionary founder.

One of the common pitfalls in business is being overwhelmed by a multitude of ideas and opportunities without a clear path to execution. Keely emphasises the need to cut through the noise and focus on what truly matters. It's not about piling on new strategies and initiatives but identifying the exact constraint that hinders progress.

“There’s no shortage of ‘we shoulds’ or good ideas. The challenge in business is often the resources,” Keely says.

“Who's got the time, the money, the team, the people power, the know-how, all the bits and pieces, to bring these ideas to fruition? This is what keeps business owners stuck in the details of their business forever.”

This is why the Liinchpin System is so vital to business success, simplifying the process by helping business owners untangle the business’ grip from around them, prioritise effectively, and remove roadblocks.

The core philosophy at Liinchpin is that the power of success is balanced between simplifying the best strategy and swiftly actioning it, dissolving bottlenecks for good. Keely emphasises that right execution is the real game-changer.

A shining example of this approach is a local Sunshine Coast company that Liinchpin recently assisted.

“They approached me with all these plans for growth, with a laundry list of strategic tasks they felt they needed to complete,” Keely says.

“They were completely overwhelmed and afraid of the potential cash strain. We asked them to simplify and examine their current network. There’s all this untapped revenue and growth in what already exists in their current activities. Success leaves clues.”

By implementing a straightforward automated strategy building on their existing community base, they achieved a remarkable 40 per cent growth in revenue. It required minimal resources and a simplified focus, dispelling the notion that growth always demands complexity.

Keely and her team firmly believe in providing more than just knowledge or advice. It’s not enough to educate; one must also possess the tools to bring it to life. Liinchpin provides templates, a framework or a set system. They ensure that the path from idea to reality is practical.

Keely's approach not only resonates with businesses striving for growth but also with those looking to preserve the essence of their entrepreneurial spirit as they scale. She understands the magic that lies at the heart of founder-led companies.

“People talk a lot about great culture, but the essence of how to create and maintain it as a business grows, is completely misunderstood,” Keely says.

“What is required is a set system that creates a high performance and harmonious team - no matter how big or small.”

Liinchpin helps companies implement a system for creating a self-managing team, where employees are shown exactly what success looks like for them as individuals and how they contribute to the bigger picture of the organisation. This in turn creates people who care about the business’ success and actively want to contribute to it.

With Keely and her team’s guidance, businesses can not only scale but also preserve the magic of their entrepreneurial core.

The evolution of networking: three levels of business growth

Often seen as the lifeblood of business growth, networking evolves as the business owner matures. For most small businesses, networking and word-ofmouth referrals generate over 90% of new customers. Understanding this evolution is critical to harnessing the true power of networking, moving from local connections to strategic partnerships and, ultimately, to a focus on reputation and community contribution.

LEVEL ONE:

LAYING THE FOUNDATIONS – For new business owners, networking is about survival and planting roots within the local community. Initially, the aim is to secure new business through referrals, a vital lifeline when marketing budgets are slim and brand recognition is in its infancy.

These entrepreneurs are struggling to establish their credibility and voice within their industry. They are open to mentorship and leadership roles that might catapult their visibility. They seek platforms to demonstrate their expertise, understanding that each connection made is a potential referral source. The primary goal is to secure a steady stream of clients to ensure the business’s upward trajectory.

LEVEL TWO:

THE POWER OF PARTNERSHIPS – As businesses mature, the key to sustainable growth is forging high-value, synergistic partnerships. Business owners leverage their established community presence and deeper industry understanding to seek partnerships that offer mutual benefits. They look for collaborative opportunities where combined efforts can serve a wider customer base, creating a consistent pipeline of opportunities.

The metric for success transitions to the quality and impact of new partnerships. Confidence blooms as these entrepreneurs witness the tangible effects of their work on clients and recognise their growing influence within their sphere.

LEVEL THREE:

REPUTATION AND CONTRIBUTION –

In this stage, owners no longer actively chase referrals. Such opportunities now come organically, managed efficiently by their teams, allowing the owners to shift their focus outward. Networking transforms into an act of giving back. Established business owners use their platform and experiences to contribute to the community, nurturing budding entrepreneurs and enriching industry practices. Speaking engagements, workshops, and valuable content creation become their new networking tools aimed at enhancing their personal brand and, by extension, their business’s legacy.

Success becomes more emotive at this level. The satisfaction of aiding others' growth, being a pillar in the community, and witnessing the industry's evolution becomes the new measure of achievement. The focus is on initiatives that support their team, uplift the industry, and benefit the wider community.

Networking, in its essence, is about connection and growth. As this journey unfolds, its purpose and outcomes evolve dramatically. AI: transforming Sunshine Coast business futures

Sunshine Coast business owners are increasingly hearing about the positives (and negatives) of using Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools. While some business owners have jumped on the AI bandwagon, others are a bit more cautious about taking the leap. A recent study by MYOB has reported only 19 per cent of Australian small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are currently utilising AI in their operations. For many business owners, the prospect of integrating AI can be daunting. Let's address some of the fear and confusion surrounding AI and suggest practical steps forward.

One of the greatest fears surrounding AI is the complexity and perceived inaccessibility of the technology. Many worry that it requires extensive technical knowledge or significant investment. However, AI can be more approachable than it appears. There is a wide range of tools available, so much more than the mainstream offerings such as ChatGPT. It's about leveraging the correct AI technology and taking small steps to enhance customer experiences, make datainformed decisions and streamline your most labour-intensive tasks, not overhauling your entire operation overnight.

that might not be immediately obvious. This doesn't mean disregarding business instincts; rather, it's about supplementing them with concrete data. For example, AI can analyse customer interaction data from social media and website visits to identify patterns, allowing business owners to create more effective, personalised marketing campaigns targeted at specific customer interests and behaviours.

A common concern is that AI might lead to depersonalisation or even replace human roles. In reality, AI should be seen as a tool to streamline operations, allowing staff to focus on more strategic and creative tasks. It's about enhancing efficiency, not replacing the human element that is central to small businesses and the use of AI. One of the ways that we have assisted small business owners is by helping them to overcome social media posting procrastination. For example, we recently worked with Empire Art Photography to create a Marketing Assistant AI Persona to assist them with the planning and development of a personal branding challenge to help bring greater visibility to their personal branding service.

A major advantage of AI is its ability to personalise customer interactions. While the idea of analysing customer data might seem overwhelming, AI simplifies this process. It's not about intruding into customer privacy but about using available data to better understand and serve your clientele. With guidance, this information can then be used to create an AI Persona customised to your business and target market to assist with usually laborious tasks such as strategic planning and writing drafts for social media posts. We recently assisted Eumundi Markets to create an Events Assistant AI Persona to assist in event planning and marketing.

For small businesses, the shift from intuition-based to data-driven decisions can be intimidating. AI demystifies this process by identifying patterns and insights

Given the rapid evolution of AI technology, training is important to learn how to approach AI. Google has a range of free courses; however, it’s also advisable for small business owners to seek assistance from experts in the field. A certified AI consultant can help demystify AI by breaking it down into simple, actionable steps, tailor solutions to your specific business needs, and ensure you're making the most of this technology in a secure, ethical and effective manner.

Embracing AI doesn't have to be an overwhelming leap into the unknown. With the right guidance and a clear understanding of its benefits and limitations, business owners can confidently integrate AI to enhance their operations and customer experiences.

A decade of innovation and opportunity: celebrating Silicon Coast’s 10th anniversary

As Silicon Coast marks its 10th Anniversary, the organisation looks back on a decade of fostering innovation and forward-thinking within the entrepreneurial ecosystem of Australia. Their journey, underpinned by the theme ‘Turning Opportunities into Reality,’ reflects a commitment to building on a strong legacy and propelling the region into a future of economic prosperity.

Silicon Coast has been pivotal in crafting an environment where entrepreneurship, collaboration, and innovation flourish. Silicon Coast and Forward Fest cofounder Craig ‘CJ’ Josic says their mission has always been to co-create the most innovative and entrepreneurial region in Australia.

"We're not just celebrating past achievements; we're gearing up for a future where our community's clarity, connection, capability, collaboration, and advocacy shine even brighter,” CJ says.

At the heart of Silicon Coast's strategy lies a series of signature events such as Forward Fest, Collaboration Lives Here, and Startup and Scaleup Weekends, designed to encourage economic growth and technological advancement. Forward Fest stands out as a transformative business festival that aligns with the organisation's annual theme, providing a launchpad for learning and growth.

"Forward Fest is a catalyst for innovation, driving economic recovery and enhancing employment opportunities across Southeast Queensland," CJ says.

Silicon Coast's impact is further amplified through its ecosystem leadership group, a collective of key stakeholders dedicated to executing a shared vision that is both strategic and measured. By fostering a unified brand identity, promoting targeted

marketing campaigns, and leveraging connections within industry organisations, Silicon Coast has positioned the Sunshine Coast as more than a tourist destination— it's the entrepreneurial capital of the region.

Queensland Chief Entrepreneur Julia Spicer highlights the importance of ongoing support. "It's critical that we support organisations like Silicon Coast beyond an event. The dedication shown, and the willingness of the government and Advance Queensland to collaborate with regional organisations, is a testament to Silicon Coast's influence,” Julia says.

As Silicon Coast embarks on its next chapter, the focus is on leadership, sustainability, equity, investment, growth, business retention and expansion. These pillars are not just goals but a promise to the entrepreneurial community that the organisation will continue to be a source of support and guidance.

Looking toward Forward Fest 2024, the expectation is to build on the previous year's success and create an even more impactful festival. Will Shrapnel, founder of HeliMods, encapsulates the sentiment of the community when he says, "These events that Silicon Coast run create more conversations that lead to more ideas that then scale our region's capability and capacity in the innovation ecosystem."

Silicon Coast's decade-long dedication has proven that with the right support, collaboration, and vision, turning opportunities into reality is not just a theme—it's a living, breathing part of the entrepreneurial journey on the Sunshine Coast.

Join the celebration and the movement and be part of turning the next decade's opportunities into your reality.

Reviving MATTERS: a multimedia ecosystem for community connection

In a recent episode of the Coast and Commerce podcast, host Ben Amos from Innovate Media engaged in a compelling dialogue with Luke Hawley, the new CEO of Matters Magazine. Luke is known for his exceptional ability to connect entrepreneurs and foster meaningful collaborations. Luke discusses the revival of Matters Magazine and how traditional print media is adapting into a multimedia ecosystem for community connection.

Luke’s transition from a corporate position at Procter & Gamble in Sydney to becoming a prominent figure in the Sunshine Coast’s business community is a story of adaptation and seizing opportunities. His initial venture into the business world was marked by a strong desire to create something of his own, leading him back to the Sunshine Coast with a vision to make a difference in the local business landscape.

Central to Luke’s business philosophy is the concept of being a connector, which he embodies through initiatives like Marketing Broker Australia and B2B Sunshine Coast. Whether it’s creating engaging websites for local business owners or networking at his monthly LinkedIn Local events, proactive connection is what led him to helm of Matters Magazine.

“My job is to help Sunshine Coast business owners share their stories, advice and offers with their local community,” Luke says.

When Luke learned of the potential closure of Matters Magazine, a beloved local publication on the Sunshine Coast for 17 years, he sensed an opportunity to preserve and evolve this iconic community asset. He connected with Vickie Magic, the former owner, who was open to the possibility, and suggested he meet Dr Shari Hall who had been writing the stories in the magazine for the past eight years. Together, Vickie imagined they’d form a great partnership, each possessing skills that complemented the other’s expertise.

A MULTIMEDIA ECOSYSTEM

Through the revival of MATTERS, Luke and

his business partner, Dr Shari, are redefining the role of print media and integrating it with digital strategies to enhance reach and engagement.

“The magazine and the new mobile app become a portal to engage with premium, longer-form Sunshine Coast business community content,” Luke says. This approach demonstrates how traditional media can adapt and thrive by embracing digital tools and platforms.

Luke advocates for networking as a strategy for developing genuine, meaningful relationships within the business community. He advises against approaching networking with a purely transactional mindset, emphasising the value of trust and mutual support.

“It’s trust that then leads to doing business with you,” Luke notes, highlighting the significance of building a network based on authenticity and shared values.

COMMUNITY CONNECTION

For Sunshine Coast business owners, Luke’s experiences and insights offer practical advice on leveraging those community connections and innovating within traditional business models like print media. Creating mutually beneficial partnerships with local chambers of commerce, educational institutions, radio stations, and organisers of a multitude of business events and expos, the Matters Magazine ecosystem continues to expand. These important collaborative endeavours drive business growth for all.

“If you are curious about how to engage with the diverse Sunshine Coast business community, reach out,” Luke encourages during the podcast. Through Luke’s story and insights, business owners can gain valuable perspectives on building strong networks and embracing innovative approaches to traditional advertising mediums.

Leaders in local: Rod Winner shares the 91.1 Hot FM ethos of localism

As we take another turn around the sun, the new year brings with it a sense of renewal and fresh opportunity. For Rod Winner, General Manager of 91.1 Hot FM, this annual reset is not just a personal ritual, but a significant influencer of business strategies as well. Indeed, the arrival of January prompts individuals and organisations alike to reevaluate their goals, recalibrate their plans, and embark on new ventures with renewed vigour. At 91.1 Hot FM, this annual reset sets the stage for a year of growth and innovation.

Their meticulous planning ensures that the team at 91.1 Hot FM is wellprepared to tackle the challenges and seize the opportunities that lie ahead in 2024. From refining content strategies to coordinating staffing, every aspect is carefully orchestrated to lay the foundation for success.

One significant aspect of 91.1 Hot FM’s approach is its unwavering commitment to what Rod calls localism. “We are leaders in local,” Rod proudly declares. “Our focus is here and nowhere else.” This emphasis on serving and uplifting the local community is at the core of the station’s ethos. Through strategic partnerships, engaging content, and impactful advertising campaigns, 91.1 Hot FM amplifies the voices of local businesses and fosters meaningful connections within the Sunshine Coast region.

“We have local people doing local radio shows, talking about local things,” Rod emphasises. With everyone back on deck in February, it felt like a new beginning for the station family. “Sam and Ash are back together for breakfast again after Ash’s seven-month maternity leave, and that has just raised the vibe at the station and also on the airwaves through her infectious laughter and banter with Sam,” Rod says.

“We have a full book of shows across the entire day with Mikey and Dana during the workday, and Nugget and Al to drive you home. We are live and local from five o’clock

in the morning until seven o’clock at night - all done from our Maroochydore studios.

“We are proud that our team are all local people. They went to school here, their kids go to school here, they coach and play sport here, they have an endless list of contacts. It is just a fantastic book of knowledge of everything that has happened and is happening on the Coast. Our localism ethos is what connects us to the community on a deeper level.”

This commitment to localism extends beyond the airwaves and into the fabric of everyday life on the Sunshine Coast. Whether it is supporting local events, charities, or businesses, 91.1 Hot FM is there as a trusted ally and a partner of the community.

“Radio is a broad medium, and it’s always there. Radio's ability to deliver messages quickly and adapt them in real-time makes it an indispensable asset for businesses looking to stay agile and responsive in today’s fast-paced world,” Rod says.

“Radio can bring a strong form of credibility. It’s comforting for people to listen to, and it gives businesses a sense of authority.” By sharing the stage with trusted voices like those of 91.1 Hot FM, businesses can enhance their credibility and reach a broad audience.

“When businesses choose to advertise with us, we take the time to learn a lot about them. We find out what their challenges are and use all the resources available to us to work on solutions with them. Our clients feel like they are part of our business, and we want the client to feel like we are a trusted part of their business as well,” Rod says.

As 91.1 Hot FM looks ahead to 2024, Rod expresses optimism and excitement about the opportunities that lie ahead. “From a whole of station perspective, we’re super excited about what 2024 is going to bring for us, our listeners and our clients. We have consistency across many years now, and we're proud to be leaders in local.”

EMPOWERING GROWTH ACROSS THE COAST

Six months after taking the helm as General Manager of TAFE Queensland’s East Coast region, Mark Reilly shares his vision for the future of vocational education and training on the Sunshine Coast.

“If you’re not prepared to take on the job of leading the team, you lose the right to complain.” Those are the sage words of wisdom Mark Reilly recalls his mentor bestowing on him when he first embarked on his career.

Now, more than 30 years on, Mark credits this notion, and his desire to empower others to experience the lifechanging impact of education, as the driving force behind his own career path and his recent ascension to the role of General Manager for TAFE Queensland’s East Coast region.

“For me, it’s about acknowledging that the power is in our hands –that if we truly want to make a difference, we have to be willing to put our hand up and walk the talk,” Mark says.

“It’s about putting yourself out there, being vulnerable and taking on the job with the view of improving the future for others.

“My passion is around supporting the student experience, which is really at the heart of everything we do. I want to continue building on the incredible work of my predecessors to ensure we’re putting the student at the forefront of our decision-making. I am where I am today because of what TAFE has provided to me, and I want our people and our students to feel the same.”

Mark began his career as an apprentice electrician when he was just 15 years of age, and still maintains his accreditation to this day; however, it wasn’t until after he’d completed his qualification and practiced in industry for five years that he discovered his true passion lay in education.

“I was at an awards dinner as a recipient and one of the trainers from the business I was working at said to me, ‘You really need to be one of the teachers here’. As a young tradesperson, I was supervising a lot of apprentices and I really enjoyed showing them what I’d learnt,” he says.

“FOR ME, IT’S ABOUT ACKNOWLEDGING THAT THE POWER IS IN OUR HANDS –THAT IF WE TRULY WANT TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE, WE HAVE TO BE WILLING TO PUT OUR HAND UP AND WALK THE TALK. IT’S ABOUT PUTTING YOURSELF OUT THERE, BEING VULNERABLE AND TAKING ON THE JOB WITH THE VIEW OF IMPROVING THE FUTURE FOR OTHERS.”

“I just had that natural affinity, and one of my peers recognised that in me. Like a lot of our teachers, I found that sharing my knowledge and experience with students and helping them achieve their career goals was incredibly rewarding.”

Mark taught electrotechnology in New South Wales for 13 years before making the move to Queensland. Over the next 18 years, he climbed through the ranks of the vocational education and training (VET) sector, taking on various managerial roles within TAFE Queensland, as well as the Australia Pacific Training Coalition.

After six years as the Executive Director for Education and Training for TAFE Queensland’s East Coast region, stepping into the role of General Manager was not only a natural progression, but an opportunity to lead the region’s VET sector into the future for the benefit of students, local industry and the community.

“At TAFE Queensland, we have the opportunity to offer programs that meet the needs of all members of our community, but it’s about getting the balance right to ensure that we address the greatest areas of priority while creating opportunities for students to succeed in a career they’re truly passionate about,” Mark says.

“Supported by the Queensland Government through the Fee Free TAFE initiative, we’ve been able to increase our training in the East Coast region by over 30 per cent on last year, and for this region–including online programs–we’re looking at delivering training to around 35,000 students this year.

“This is not only a significant increase, but it’s also great news for the local economy and local businesses, with these skilled, jobready students set to graduate and fill the jobs that are most needed in our community – and there are so many great opportunities for our students on the Sunshine Coast.”

With this in mind, Mark says the region will be investing significantly in its facilities, equipment and training for staff to ensure TAFE Queensland is delivering the most upto-date skills to local students.

“Education opens doors and changes lives, which is why we’re partnering with the Queensland Government and consulting with Local Government and community groups to fill the jobs of now and into the future,” he says.

“We’re investing a significant amount

into the development of new programs and resources that will enable locals to secure jobs in our emerging industries, including hydrogen and renewable energies, advanced manufacturing, automation, and cyber security.

“For example, we’re the first Registered Training Organisation in Queensland to deliver the Certificate III in Automotive Electric Vehicle Technology (AUR32721), enabling us to deliver the hybrid EV training that local automotive businesses need now and into the future,” he says.

“We’re currently working on our infrastructure plans for the next 10 years with the guidance of local businesses, community groups and governments, so that we can ensure we’re addressing their needs and putting qualifications in the hands of our regional communities.

“We’re also improving our flexibility to support students and businesses in developing their skills while improving our own sustainability. At TAFE Queensland, we pride ourselves on delivering practical, hands-on training, so while there are still large components of courses delivered on campus, we have used technology to adapt and offer a mix of training where people have the option to study remotely from their home while still feeling like part of the TAFE community, which is really game-changing.”

With so many exciting developments, Mark and his team’s vision for the future is certainly taking shape, and will have a positive lasting impact on students, industry and the community for many years to come. It’s a plan they hope will help highlight the value of VET and encourage more young people to make trades and VET qualifications their first choice.

“Vocational education and training provided me with the ability to choose my own future, and this is the case for our students too,” Mark says.

“The qualifications we offer at TAFE Queensland are a real opportunity for individuals to have an extremely rewarding, lifelong career.”

From burnout to bliss

A BUSINESS OWNER’S JOURNEY OF REDISCOVERY AND WELLNESS

Success is often equated with relentless drive and an unwavering commitment to growing one’s business. However, for Mary-Ellen Odijk, owner of With Style – Weddings & Events & Retreats, this pursuit of excellence and the pressure to do it all alone lead her down a path to burnout. Mary-Ellen shares her transformative journey from the depths of exhaustion to the creation of unique wellness retreats that help individuals and businesses redefine success.

FROM DISCOVERY TO BUSINESS OWNER

Once a full-time mother and part-time pharmacy dispensary technician, it wasn’t until her thirties that Mary-Ellen embarked on a deeper self-discovery, one that would allow her to fill a void, unleash creativity and build something uniquely her own. Initially inspired by the world of cake decoration, she completed a patisserie course in Sydney and started Hunny Bunny Cakes.

Challenges were many as she transitioned from being an employee to a chef apprentice and ultimately a new business owner. Her early years of retail experience provided invaluable communication skills

for connecting with people, but running a business brought a new set of skills to be learned. She had a never-ending to-do list, beginning with needing to learn the importance of legal procedures and regulations particular to the food service industry. Other initial steps included registering her business, obtaining necessary licenses and approvals, understanding local and regional guidelines, negotiating food labelling regulations, and managing business finances with accurate bookkeeping and accounting. Like many solo entrepreneurs, she fell victim to the common narrative, “I can do this on my own.” For who else would ever be as invested in her business as she was?

CREATING VALUE

Initially Mary-Ellen kept her business operations simple, relying on word-of-mouth referrals to generate new clients. As the business grew, a more structured marketing approach was required. She realised the necessity of upgrading to a professional website from the do-it-yourself version she’d designed.

One of the significant hurdles Mary-Ellen faced was determining the value of her products and services. Driven by self-doubt and a lack of confidence in her experience, she struggled with under-pricing. An eye-opening exercise, where she assessed time spent on her services and calculated the hourly rate, brought clarity to the fact that she was

40 | MATTERS ISSUE 105
BUSINESS | Work Life Balance

undervaluing both herself and the services she offered.

“I wasn’t valuing myself and my time. I believed I was inexperienced, just doing what people asked me to do,” Mary-Ellen confesses. Seeking guidance from business mentors, she gradually learned to recognise her worth and started factoring in the uniqueness of each job when pricing her services.

ADAPTING AND MAKING CONNECTIONS

brand to potential clients with a focus on a user-friendly experience that clearly communicated the range of services available. Her niche emphasis on small, intimate events became her distinguishing factor, attracting clients looking for personalised experiences tailored to their needs.

A FORCED PAUSE

With the onslaught of the Covid-19 pandemic, a forced pause in Mary-Ellen’s bustling business occurred. In the throes of returning deposits to interstate clients and rescheduling planned events, she simultaneously found herself bedridden due to a serious injury. Why is this happening? she asked herself. This physical setback became a catalyst for much-needed self-reflection. MaryEllen candidly acknowledged the toll her relentless work ethic took on her. She realised that the joy she once found in her work was overshadowed by her persistent pursuit of success. The pandemic-induced break allowed her to step back and assess the true meaning and purpose of her business, compelling her to re-evaluate her priorities.

“I started to realise that I was making my business personal. It was always about the challenge, the drive,” she says. “It took so much of my focus both mentally and physically. By the time Covid hit, I was completely burnt out. It was time to explore what I needed. I took myself out of the business, whereas before I had just been the business.”

A SHIFT IN FOCUS

Mary-Ellen wanted With Style to be a successful business, but more importantly, she craved balance and joy. In her quest for personal wellbeing, Mary-Ellen stumbled upon an unexpected avenue – wellness retreats. Through her catering services for such events during Covid, she discovered the profound impact these had on individuals seeking holistic healing. This realisation sparked a shift

As the Sunshine Coast wedding industry evolved, Mary-Ellen began a significant re-branding process. This involved merging Hunny Bunny Cakes with her newly formed business, With Style – Weddings & Events & Retreats, streamlining the services offered. She spent 18 months doing market research and networking, meeting venue operators and other professionals in the industry, establishing connections and understanding the local market dynamics.

Her new website played a pivotal role in presenting a cohesive

“I THINK BUSINESS HAS CHANGED SO MUCH OVER THE YEARS, AND I BELIEVE WE NEED TO LOOK AFTER OURSELVES AND EACH OTHER THROUGHOUT THE CHALLENGING JOURNEY OF ENTREPRENEURSHIP.”

in her focus – from the relentless pursuit of success to a desire for fulfillment.

She experienced first-hand the benefits of corporate wellness retreats and began to envision these retreats as curated events that go beyond traditional corporate getaways. She saw them as transformative experiences, nurturing both the body and soul in beautiful and safe spaces conducive to connection and healing.

Re-examining the business’s purpose, she decided to create a more balanced existence for herself. The process involved rethinking her marketing strategies and acknowledging the need for self-care.

THE CURATED LUXURY WELLNESS EXPERIENCE IS BORN

Mary-Ellen elucidates the essence of her wellness retreats, which extend beyond pampering sessions. Designed for eight to 16 people, these retreats offer an opportunity to connect with colleagues on a personal basis outside of the office. They provide a time for reflection within and sharing experiences with others. Education forms a significant part, offering tools and strategies for managing stress, learning relaxation and exercise techniques, and cooking new recipes with locally grown fresh foods.

She collaborates with industry professionals to provide participants with take-home skills they can incorporate into their lives. Her retreats are designed for individuals or groups seeking an escape from daily routines, offering a structured yet flexible schedule encompassing wellness activities, art, exercise, nutritional and psychological support. For her, it’s all about creating opportunities to explore new activities, boost nutrition, and find time for exercise and meditation.

CONNECTION AND CONVERSATION

Mary-Ellen urges business owners to embrace open conversations, dismantle the facade of perfection perpetuated by social media, and recognise that they are not alone in their struggles. She advocates for genuine connections with fellow entrepreneurs, seeking mentors, and prioritising emotional wellness.

“I think business has changed so much over the years, and I believe we need to look after ourselves and each other throughout the challenging journey of entrepreneurship,” she says.

THE COST OF IGNORING BURNOUT

What is the unseen cost of neglecting burnout? Neglect of employee wellbeing can lead to low morale, decreased productivity, and increased turnover. Her experience becomes a cautionary tale for business professionals to grant themselves and their staff permission to take a time-out when stress and exhaustion set in. As she pioneers a new approach to corporate retreats, the narrative invites businesses to reconsider the cost of burnout and the immeasurable benefits of prioritising the health and happiness of their most valuable assets –their employees.

In a world where the pursuit of success often neglects the individual behind the business, Mary-Ellen’s story stands as a testament to the transformative power of self-reflection, a shift in focus, and the creation of spaces where both individuals and businesses can thrive. The ripple effect of her journey challenges entrepreneurs to redefine success on their terms – embracing not just the external accolades but the internal fulfillment that makes the pursuit worthwhile. u

Pathway to greatness

with Frida Valtonsson

What began as an outlet for stress during a difficult time in her life has inspired a passion that resulted in Frida Valtonsson successfully coowning and running her own gym on the other side of the world.

Having experienced emotional turmoil following a break-up and the loss of a loved one, Frida decided to focus on improving her own wellbeing, and in doing so, found her calling.

“The more I got into fitness, the more I loved it, and because it was improving my life, I felt like I wanted to tell the world about it,” Frida said.

I saw it as a great chance to build a career and live in one of the best places in the world.

“That’s when I made the decision to study it and pursue it as a career. I just really wanted to help others feel as good as I felt.”

Born and raised in Sweden, Frida had previously travelled to Australia and fallen in love with its sunny beaches – so when Frida discovered TAFE Queensland delivered the Diploma of Sport (SIS50321) on the Sunshine Coast, she jumped at the opportunity.

“I saw it as a great chance to build a career and live in one of the best places in the world.

“TAFE Queensland was able to offer a course that met my needs; practical, hands-on, flexible training that not only provided in-depth learning but could also be achieved in a reasonable amount of time, and the guidance of our teachers was amazing.”

It was as she was nearing her graduation and preparing to return to Sweden in 2019 that she met and fell in love with her partner Isaac, making the decision to stay and work as a personal trainer from his private studio gym where, at the time, he delivered two group training classes a week.

“I started taking clients, and they referred their friends, so my clientele kept getting bigger. With new people coming in, my partner and I decided to renovate the gym and offer group fitness.”

Frida had only been working for six months when she and Isaac opened The Studio Health and Fitness Community. Then COVID hit.

“We were incredibly lucky that we had such supportive members, so we were able to keep going,” Frida said.

In just four years, The Studio Health and Fitness Community has grown from two classes a week to

Frida Valtonsson has turned a love of fitness into a thriving business, teaming up with her partner to grow what started out as a small, private studio gym into a successful group training community.

“I constantly want to improve, not just in business but in life, so I love the challenge of running my own business. It provides the possibility to grow and continue learning because it’s a never-ending journey,” Frida said. “My dream is to continue growing our gym and provide more for our members, but I’d also love to be able to employ more coaches and help more trainers join the industry.

RN educates the community with lifesaving skills

Afun birthday celebration with mates took a dark turn when, in a moment of revelry, the 18-yearold guest of honour accidentally cut himself severely with a Swiss army knife he had been gifted by his best friend. In a chaotic scene, his friends, in a state of panic and intoxication, attempted to treat the injury by holding his hand under running water as they watched the blood swirl down the drain. Unbeknownst to them, the severity of the cut required immediate and correct first aid.

Hearing a bang at her bedroom door and the cry of “Ms. Bartlett, he’s cut himself really bad!” Judy Bartlett, Registered Nurse, intervened. Immediately switching from startled mum to highly trained and calm first responder, she instructed and showed the boys how to apply direct pressure to her son’s wounds, how to lie him down to elevate his legs, and how to use a cold cloth for compression. This is only one of hundreds of scenarios Judy can share to illustrate the critical need for teenagers and those around them to be equipped with essential first aid knowledge, especially in situations involving alcohol and injuries.

In the realm of healthcare and first aid, certain individuals stand out not only for their professional expertise but for their dedication to educating communities. Judy Bartlett, RN owner of Rapid Response First Aid and iCare Training, is one such individual. Her journey is marked by a passion for helping

people prepare for the unexpected, passing on lifesaving skills learned throughout her 30 years of extensive experience in healthcare and education.

SPECIALISED COURSES AND TEENAGE FIRST AID

Judy's commitment goes beyond standard first aid courses. As a mother, she saw a need to offer specialised in-depth training to parents, delving into the nuances of baby and child illness and injury. Additionally, as her children grew and she witnessed firsthand the risks and dangers unique to the adolescent population, she incorporated courses specifically designed to address the challenges teenagers face, covering topics such as drug exposure, consequences of alcohol intoxication and head injuries. She can vividly recall numerous personal experiences that would leave anyone saying to themselves, “If they only knew what to do!”

TEEN HOSPITALITY WORKER TRAGEDY

Judy recounts a tragic incident here on the Sunshine Coast involving a 16-year-old working at a local fast-food chain. Given the routine task of cutting up the cardboard boxes for the skip bin, the teen accidentally cut his inside leg with a Stanley knife. Despite yelling out and initially appearing nonchalant, the severity of the injury became apparent

too late. His colleagues, assuming it was a minor cut, continued serving customers, only realising the seriousness of the situation 20 minutes later when they discovered he had fallen unconscious and died from an arterial bleed.

QUAD BIKE ACCIDENT

Judy recalls another incident involving two 18-year-olds working on a cattle farm. Early one morning as the sun was rising and the birds were singing, the young men mounted their quad bikes to gather the cattle for milking. One of them spun out of control and suffered a severe head injury, but the other, lacking first aid knowledge, panicked. With the best of intentions, he dragged his injured friend back to the farmhouse without immediate medical intervention. The lack of basic first aid skills in this scenario resulted in life-altering consequences, leaving the young man a paraplegic for life.

SEIZURE IN THE AIR

Adding to the spectrum of her experiences, Judy shares a compelling scenario involving her daughter, who works as a flight attendant. On a routine flight, a pregnant woman appeared to suffer from nausea related to motion sickness. The situation escalated rapidly when the woman suddenly experienced a massive seizure. In her role as a flight attendant, her daughter faced

the daunting challenge of managing a medical emergency mid-air. Drawing upon her mother's teachings and her own first aid training, she requested immediate assistance from her senior flight crew and any medical professionals on board, while simultaneously assisting the distressed woman and reassuring concerned fellow passengers.

SNAKE BITE DANGERS

Living on the Sunshine Coast, snake encounters do occur. Judy warns against common misconceptions in dealing with snake bites, stressing the importance of immobility and the application of a pressure bandage rather than wasting time running home to seek help or attempting to catch the snake for identification. Her insights underscore the need for practical knowledge in managing snake bites, dispelling myths that can lead to delayed response and worsened outcomes.

EMPOWERING COMMUNITIES THROUGH FIRST AID TRAINING

Educating the community is the number one priority for Judy and her team at Rapid Response First Aid. Their teaching extends to schools, youth groups, youth homes, community centres, and mums and bubs groups. They can provide on-site training to businesses and workplaces whose staff need certification and renewals for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and First Aid. Customised courses can be designed for individuals or groups. Face-to-face courses occur at their new state-ofthe-art teaching facility in Maroochydore. Online shortened courses are available for busy professionals and students. Corporate and mining industry group training, with an emphasis on practical skills, fire safety and emergency response, is aided by her colleague who is an expert in mine rescue, safety at heights and confined space training.

Her goal is to instil not only knowledge but also a sense of urgency in handling unforeseen circumstances and emergencies. She delves into the psychological aspect, highlighting the importance of staying calm, asking relevant questions, and eliminating panic through thorough preparation. Mental Health First Aid courses are also offered with Judy and her team at Rapid Response.

“It’s important to arm yourself with as much knowledge as you can so you feel equipped and empowered to act,” Judy says. “The more you know and the more you practice, the less you feel panic and the more automatic your potentially lifesaving actions become.”

Judy’s commitment to imparting practical, scenario-specific skills, especially to teenagers and young adults, underscores the vital role first aid plays in our communities. As we navigate the unpredictable nature of life, Judy advocates for preparedness, awareness, and the life-saving potential of first aid training for all. u

FINDING BALANCE WITH COLOUR IN NATURE A natural path to inner peace

Our world is stressful. Negativity seems to pervade every aspect of our lives, and the need for inner calm and balance has never been more apparent. Stress affects us in business, our family life, social interactions, and the education of our children. Lifestyle coaches Lorraine and Dr. Bob Roberts, offers a simple yet effective technique grounded in Nature to help us regain our equilibrium called Balance With Colour (BWC).

THE BIRTH OF BALANCE WITH COLOUR

Lorraine and Bob discovered the power of BWC during a period of personal trauma and grief, compounded by everyday stress. They needed a tool to manage their feelings of hopelessness, one that was accessible and wouldn't add to their stress. Lorraine turned to Nature for inspiration. By focusing on a single colour in Nature each day, such as the green leaves of a tree, she found that positive words naturally surfaced in her mind - growth, abundance, protect, anchored, empathy and strong. This enabled her to shift her focus away from the overwhelming negativity and distractions that surround her daily.

Lorraine and Bob experienced profound benefits of BWC in their lives and felt compelled to share this discovery with others. Their first book, Balance With Colour: To Avoid Sliding into Depression, was born from this passion.

A TECHNIQUE FOR ALL

Lorraine’s dedication to helping children affected by Domestic and Family Violence (DFV) made her realise the universal applicability of the BWC technique. Regardless of age, creed, culture, or background, BWC can benefit anyone. It's easy to learn and seamlessly integrates into daily routines.

To further assist various groups, a BWC guidebook was developed. It offers detailed instructions on how to utilise BWC to combat bullying, address men’s mental health issues, strengthen family bonds, and integrate BWC into school curricula for any grade level. The guidebook includes samples of support materials and a presenter’s manual.

Feedback from a trial of the BWC technique implemented by SunnyKids at a local primary school was overwhelmingly positive.

One facilitator says, “The children who partook in the program responded in the most unpredictable, but heart-warming ways. The program enabled many deep and meaningful conversations and connections between the children, about animals and Nature. We encouraged the children to take these new characteristics home to their families and other friends outside of school.”

A parent commented, “My children demonstrated genuine enthusiasm and interest in the program. The concept of utilising Nature and colour association as a means of navigating life challenges resonated with them strongly, encouraging them to transform difficulties into positive outcomes.”

Recognising the importance of making BWC fun and easily adaptable to daily activities, Lorraine authored fictional storybooks, A Journey of Discovery and Colour in Nature.

A TOOL FOR BUSINESS AND BEYOND

Understanding the challenges faced in various areas of life, including the business world, Lorraine and Bob believe that the BWC concept and technique holds significant value. Their experiences have shown that treating others empathetically and respectfully creates a more pleasant and productive atmosphere, both in the workplace and at home. To facilitate the adoption of BWC in the business community, they designed an A1-sized set of posters and a presenter’s handbook for training and teaching purposes. Additionally, they offer a BWC meditation video that provides relaxation and allows individuals to focus on their chosen colour and word for the day.

The Balance With Colour technique offers a unique and accessible way for people from all walks of life to regain balance, positivity, and empathy in today’s stressful world. Lorraine and Bob’s commitment to sharing this powerful tool highlights their dedication to making a positive difference in the lives of individuals, families, and communities. Together, we can all find balance and harmony in our lives and at the same time, protect our planet. u

New Year’s resolutions with Bhavna Megh

WELLBEING | Mindset
Navigating

In the dynamic world of holistic well-being, Bhavna Megh shines as a catalyst for transformation. As a seasoned Mindset and Energy Coach and the visionary behind Stepping Into You, Bhavna shares her unique approach, delving into the mind-body connection and the transformative power of rituals.

As the New Year unfolds, seeking guidance on achieving health and fitness resolutions seems to be top of mind for many Australians. Many of us have been guilty of seeking the quick fix, the magic pill, the super smoothie, or the 21-day total body make-over to achieve that all elusive perfect body. However, Bhavna is quick to point out the challenges that often accompany these kinds of resolutions and explores the holistic aspects of her clients' goals, addressing relationships, self-image, societal and cultural expectations, past traumas and overall sense of wellbeing.

“Probably the most common goal or resolution that people will set for themselves is around their health and fitness,” Bhavna says. “Perhaps they’ve ended a relationship and desire to meet someone new; maybe they feel a shift in their physical body might reignite some passion and increase their libido; perhaps they’ve been yo-yo dieting most of their life with little success and feel now is the time for change; or maybe they’re in business and feel they’d be more confident communicating with clients if they felt better physically.

I hear a lot of excuses from people: the pressures of work, I just don't have the time, I have pain and my body is not allowing me to exercise… When we’re back into the flow of life and the chaos of things, we stop seeing results and the frustration and negative selftalk begins. Unfortunately, this resolution becomes the one that fails the fastest.” But why?

ORIGIN OF LIMITING BELIEFS

Bhavna explains that it all goes back to the development of deep-seated limiting beliefs that become the obstacles to achieving resolutions. Subconscious programming that occurs during our early childhood development contributes to the creation of beliefs that make up our personality. They may have been downloaded from parents,

relatives, school friends or society. As a result, we end up seeking out things in our environment which reinforce those beliefs.

“As a child, I was given many nicknames like ‘Daddy Long Legs’ (I could jump lots of squares in hopscotch), ‘Giraffe’ (I was one of the tallest of my year in high school), and ‘Chicken Legs’ (for having legs that were long and skinny). Wearing long, baggy trousers as part of my regular uniform, and larger shirts and blazers that didn’t fit my body kept me and my body hidden.”

Bhavna recalls her early teens, when she was diagnosed with a physical condition that caused her to lose additional weight. In her twenties, doctors and personal trainers constantly told her she was underweight for her height - not ‘normal’. She was ashamed to discuss this with her female friends, many who were regularly trying to lose weight, leaving her feeling isolated and alone. She constantly compared herself to women in her environment and ‘perfect-looking’ celebrities, further reinforcing her beliefs around beauty and body image, which she states, “kept me small, kept me in self-

Discovering what she really wanted took time, thoughtful introspection, and profound communication with her body. She began daily meditation that involved touching every part of her body, connecting with it and showing appreciation and gratitude for its strength and abilities.

“Every point of dis-ease and dis-comfort in the body is a communication,” Bhavna says. “When you experience this, your body is showing you that there’s something out of balance. We need to listen to what our body is telling us.”

Bhavna changed her belief statement to reflect what she truly desired: “I am the optimal weight that allows me the energy and confidence to do all the things that I love, need and want to do every single day.”

It was expansive and liberating. Making the shift from overly analytical thinking to more intuitive communication allowed emotions that were previously stuck in her physical body to release. With this shift, she began to experience more balance, more peace, and more joy.

WHAT DO I WANT TO BELIEVE ABOUT MYSELF?

INSTEAD OF THE CURRENT ‘STORY’ I AM LIVING, WHAT REALITY DO I DESIRE FOR MYSELF NOW?

WHAT IS TRULY STOPPING ME FROM CREATING THAT REALITY?

judgement, having a negative impact on my life”.

Having trained in self-development and emotional release work over the last 15 years, Bhavna encourages clients to replace limiting beliefs with positive, supportive beliefs, emphasising the transformative power of mindset shifts.

FUSION OF MIND AND BODY

“Seven years ago, I participated in a belief change workshop. I wanted to programme for myself, I am 56 kilos and a healthy weight,” Bhavna says. “My partner asked me why I wanted to be that specific weight – it’s restrictive and limiting.”

RITUALS FOR LASTING CHANGE

After the initial novelty and enthusiasm for achieving resolutions wanes, it’s the skill of creating rituals that can serve as a powerful tool for sustained change. Shifting from routine-based short-term thinking, Bhavna encourages clients to view their habits as rituals. This fosters a deeper connection with self and promotes a more longterm commitment as the actions become automatic and part of daily living.

“A ritual for me is something that is much more sacred, something that is truly honouring and contributing to self in whatever way that is, whether it’s physical, mental, or spiritual,” she says. “Sometimes

Are you ready to liberate yourself from…

> past traumas

> abuse and bullying

> anxiety, worry and depression

> societal and cultural expectations

> continuous and ongoing frustrations

> fear, shame, self-doubt, and unworthiness…?

the word ‘routine’ takes clients back to unpleasant rigid structures that perhaps their family have taught them. A ritual tends to sit in a different place in the mind in terms of what it’s doing and what it’s reframing. It’s truly powerful and can help to reignite your rhythm and resolve.”

THE ‘STORY’ WE LIVE VERSUS THE REALITY WE DESIRE

People often come to Bhavna with a ‘story’ they’ve been living for years. The language and self-talk used can be debilitating and prohibitive to progress and change. “If they’re currently operating in the belief system of, ‘It’s too hard to change my body,’ or, ‘I don’t have the time to plan my food,’ I work with them to create and re-frame those beliefs to reflect the reality they desire. What if you told yourself exercise was fun? What if you believed change was easy? What we believe is what we experience in our reality.

We’ve downloaded and adopted all these beliefs from influences in our environment and gone through our adult life finding things that reinforce those beliefs. We do this because we need to confirm our internal reality by aligning it with our external environment. But, when we change our internal belief system, we start to experience and find things that validate the new beliefs that we have. This strengthens and reinforces them, and that then becomes our evolving and more expansive reality.”

EMPOWERING CHOICES

It may seem a daunting task for some – changing a belief system that’s been embedded deep into one’s mind since childhood. Yet, there is hope and a way to create new neural pathways in the subconscious mind. Evidence from quantum science is showing us that everything is connected. Using various energy healing modalities and muscle testing, Bhavna helps clients uncover and differentiate between their positive truths that promote congruency between the mind and body leading to healing, and the discord and false beliefs that perpetuate disease. Guiding them to the realisation that they are all-powerful and have the capacity and potential to do, live, and be in the life they desire is her role as their mindset and energy coach. The work comes from within the individual, and the choice is theirs.

Taking responsibility for choices becomes a cornerstone in Bhavna's coaching philosophy. In a paradigm where external experiences are seen as reflections of internal states, she invites individuals to acknowledge the connection between mind and body.

In Bhavna’s world of mindset and energy coaching, transformation is not just an outcome; it’s an ongoing journey. Her professional and balanced approach serves as a guiding light, urging individuals to embrace change, explore their desires and unlock their inner power. As we navigate the complexities of resolutions and well-being, Bhavna's wisdom resonates—a reminder that true transformation begins within. u

We all know the expression: There’s no time like the present. This proverb was first recorded back in 1562. Then a couple of hundred years later, John Trusler amplified it by adding, “A thousand unforeseen circumstances may interrupt you at a future time”.

So, if you want to avoid those thousand things taking you off-track, there really is no time like the present to take action on your goals and dreams. What better time than the start of a new year to really get clear on those goals and write them down?

What I want to share with you is all about living your dreams and seeing how far you can push it.

About 25 years ago I picked up an Economist magazine and in the back of it there was an ad for an executive course, where you could go to Harvard Business School. There were also similar courses offered at Yale and Stanford. I thought to myself, wouldn’t that be cool to go to one of the big boys and learn from some of the smartest minds on the planet. Well, in early 2024, I got to fulfil one of my dreams of going to Harvard Business School in Boston, Massachusetts. The course I just completed was Mergers and Acquisitions - Strategy, Execution and Post Merger Management. There were 81 people there from 31 countries.

I love being a student. I always have. So, I loved sitting around all these smart people. In my class was one of the head guys from Airbus in Toulouse, France. Another was a Professor at Harvard Law School who was involved in

the case of Elon Musk with Twitter. I’m sitting there with my eyes wide open, taking it all in.

I don’t know about you, but I didn’t get great scores at school… just average at best… and so doing something like this was just not on my radar. I didn’t think it was possible.

My message to you today is: When it comes to limiting beliefs, the more you break them down and just go after it, the better. See what’s out there. See who’ll take you! Ask the question. Just go after that thing that calls to you. When you’re resourceful, things happen.

I’ll give you an example of an exercise we did that reveals just how much we humans can hold ourselves back due to limiting beliefs. It’s a lesson about the principle of self-sabotage and this is so often an unconscious practice.

About 10 years ago, we put out a job vacancy notice for a General Manager role. It had the usual language you would expect to see, ‘We are seeking a general manager…’ But it was for a fictitious job. The job did not exist. We just invented it to test this general principle of self-sabotage. The first week we advertised the annual salary for the position as $50,000. We got 161 applications for the job. The next week, we advertised the same job, with exactly the same wording, but this time we gave it an annual salary of $250,000. So how many applications do you think we got? I can tell you. It was four. The job description didn’t change. It was still the same job. Only the salary changed.

Most people who looked at it would have thought, I’m not worth $250,000. Or

Boundless dreams Aim high, soar higher

only people with a certain background and experience get that amount of money. There was a self-sabotaging point there, purely on the dollar amount.

In closing, I issue to all of you a call to action. Dream again! No matter what stage you are in life, dream again! Then allow yourself to deeply feel the dissatisfaction of where you are currently and overcome your fear of taking the next step.

So many business owners have allowed the day-to-day grind to steal their dream and the faith that they had in that dream. They no longer believe in the vision that they once had. Are you one of those? Do you want to know how to recreate a vision that will propel you forward? Then find someone who can give you a fresh perspective. Someone who can help you blow through what’s been holding you back. It ain’t over till it’s over!

“Each new day is a blank page in the diary of your life. The secret of success is in turning that diary into the best story you possibly can,” Douglas Pagels.

Healthy gums equal healthy smiles from the foundations up

In the quest for a fresh start, we often overlook a crucial aspect of our well-being - our gum health. It's easy to dismiss the state of our gums as inconsequential, but they are the hidden foundation upon which our overall wellness is built. Periodontitis (gum problems), the elusive and often misunderstood 'hidden disease,' lurks in the shadows, evading the attention it deserves. Yet, its implications can ripple through our entire body, impacting our health in ways we may never have imagined.

Periodontist John Carrigy of Foundation Dental Services (FDS) takes us on a journey to uncover the significance of gum health as a beginning place for total body wellness. It's time to shed light on the mysteries of periodontitis and explore the pivotal role it plays in shaping our new beginnings on the path to optimal health. Join us as we delve deeper into the secrets of a healthy smile and discover how it can lead us to brighter days ahead.

WHAT IS A PERIODONTIST?

‘Peri’ from Ancient Greek, means ‘around’ and ‘odon’ means tooth. A periodontist is an Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) registered dental specialist that looks after everything around the teeth – the supporting structures – maintaining oral soft tissue health and general occlusal function.

WHAT DO THEY DO?

They work closely with the general dentist and hygiene teams on the Coast

to diagnose and treat a wide range of oral health conditions such as: periodontitis or pyorrhoea (pronounced pie-re-arh). They also biopsy various oral lumps and bumps, carry out minor surgical procedures like correcting tongue ties or gum shape, and replace missing teeth using dental implants.

SHOULD PERIODONTITIS BE TREATED?

Most of us will be susceptible to developing some level of gum problems during our lives. If left untreated, it can become a major cause of tooth loss. It can also complicate management of systemic health issues such as diabetes and cardiovascular issues. Yes, it should be treated.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS AND WHO SHOULD I SEE?

Periodontitis is called the ‘silent disease’ in dentistry. There is rarely any pain until the problem is well established. However, if picked up early, it is usually very easy to treat. If you experience increasing food impaction, bleeding on brushing, bad breath, are aware of becoming ‘long in the tooth’, or your teeth are becoming crooked or loose, then you should see your general dental team. They will then decide the extent and severity of the problem and treat it in-house or raise a referral to FDS.

DO I REQUIRE HOSPITALISATION FOR DENTAL IMPLANTS?

FDS does not carry out general dental care (such as fillings and cleans) however, we can accept ‘self-referrals’ via our website. We can

then carry out a thorough assessment and treatment for you as needed, and/or refer you on to one of the excellent general practices and hygiene teams that we work with on the coast.

At FDS we have been placing implants for over 25 years. We only use the best quality materials and reputable implant systems. Detailed planning is carried out away from the chair using 3-D scans. This allows the actual placement to be carried out in the normal dental chair under the same anaesthetic you would use for a filling as a walk-in walk-out procedure.

HOW MUCH DO DENTAL IMPLANTS COST?

Asking how much dental implants will cost is like asking how much a car may cost. It will depend on the implant system chosen, the number of implants, complexity of the surgery – just to name a few factors. The best first step is to attend for a consultation where all the options and variations can be explored and obtain a firm quote. If it is a very complex or expensive treatment plan, it’s wise to obtain a few quotes. Once placed, it is usually very difficult to remove implants.

CAN MEDICATIONS CAUSE BLEEDING GUMS?

Possibly. However, the most common cause of persistent bleeding gums is developing deeper periodontal issues. Sometimes various medications will affect saliva flow and indirectly or directly change the way the body responds to plaque (such as bacterial build-up). A periodontist will look at your

54 | MATTERS ISSUE 105 WELLBEING | Health

list of medications and explain any possible effects as part of your consultation.

IS IT TRUE YOU ARE A FAMILY OWNED AND OPERATED BUSINESS?

Yes. All three children, and three of our spouses, are also in dentistry and help with patient care. So, there are seven of us in the business with eight dental degrees between us and two more under study. Within our support staff there are also numerous family

connections such as sisters, daughters, sons. At FDS, you will definitely get to know the family!

WHERE CAN I LEARN MORE ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS MODEL AND HOW YOU MANAGED TO BUILD SUCH A GREAT COMPANY?

Over the next two issues of Matters Magazine, we plan to share more on the way FDS was built as a company. Further information will also be provided on the

HOPE IN ACTION

The transformative impact of PTSD Dogs Australia

In the vast support network for Australia’s first responders and Defence Force personnel grappling with the harrowing effects of PostTraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), there shines a light of hope: PTSD Dogs Australia. This not-for-profit charity is dedicated to rescuing, rehoming, and training displaced and unwanted dogs to become vital companions for those navigating the turbulent waters of PTSD.

Living with PTSD can be an incapacitating experience. The constant state of hyperarousal, hypervigilance, and intrusive memories can severely impact one’s daily life and relationships. Simple tasks like going to the grocery store or attending a social event can become overwhelming challenges.

However, the presence of a well-trained assistance dog can offer a ray of hope in this darkness. These dogs not only provide practical assistance but also emotional support and companionship, helping individuals reclaim their sense of normalcy and joy in life. Let’s delve into the remarkable journeys of three individuals whose lives have been profoundly changed by the presence of their four-legged companions.

TEAM BLAZE

The handler, a retired Naval Clearance Diver, found solace in Blaze, an Australian Shepherd. The handler’s struggles with PTSD and mobility issues were once overwhelming. The isolation from normal life and overwhelming anxiety led him to avoid public spaces and social activities, impacting his family life and emotional wellbeing. However, after a rigorous six-month training program, the handler’s avoidance behaviours and anxiety began to dissipate. With Blaze’s training to perform retrieval and tug-based tasks to assist with the handler’s mobility challenges, he experienced significant progress in overcoming his avoidance behaviours and anxiety.

Team Blaze has triumphantly attended family events and embraced public spaces the handler once feared. Blaze became not just a companion but a lifeline, embodying the essence of healing through unconditional love and support.

TEAM HENRY

For the handler, a retired Army Veteran, the arrival of Henry marked a turning point. The handler’s struggles with chronic anger, low mood, and anxiety were debilitating. Severe startled responses led to social exclusion from local shops, cafes, and community spaces. However, with Henry’s support creating space, the handler experienced significant improvements in re-entering public spaces and engaging in social activities.

Henry’s training to mitigate his companion’s anger outbursts and assist with mobility issues opened doors to social inclusion previously shuttered by fear and anxiety. Team Henry has now seamlessly reintegrated into the community, fostering deeper connections and reclaiming his sense

of belonging. Local shops and cafes now support Team Henry, with the community keeping an eye on them.

TEAM LEGEND

The handler, a retired Army/Air Force Veteran, found newfound peace and joy in Legend. The handler’s high levels of anger, social isolation, and night terrors compounded his challenges, impacting his ability to engage in family. However, with Legend’s training to mitigate his companion’s anger and create space around him, the handler experienced significant improvements in managing his anger and engaging in family activities.

Legend’s ability respond to his handler’s needs with unwavering loyalty transformed his life. Team Legend has now embraced family activities and conquered their night terrors, rediscovering the fun in life.

These stories are poignant reminders of the profound impact assistance dogs can have on individuals grappling with PTSD. Through tailored training programs and unwavering companionship, these dogs offer not just support but a pathway to healing, enabling their owners to reclaim their lives with newfound courage and resilience.

PTSD Dogs Australia stands as a testament to the power of compassion and dedication in fostering hope amidst adversity. As these stories illustrate, the bond between human and canine transcends words, offering solace, strength, and a beacon of hope for a brighter tomorrow. u

WHY LOCAL MATTERS

The Sunshine Coast is our home. It is also a place where the community beats in sync with the vibrant rhythm of local businesses. Just spend a day strolling through any of our local markets or walking down the streets of our villages and towns, and you’ll understand the significance of supporting our neighbours. Local Matters is not just a phrase; it’s a rallying cry for a community that understands the power of connection, collaboration and shared prosperity.

We are in an era where the pursuit of paradise has its economic hurdles – think rising commercial lease and property costs; think vacant store fronts with ‘lease’ signs in the windows; think increasing numbers of people struggling to find affordable accommodation. As more people join our community from near and afar, the need for thoughtful strategies to overcome these challenges becomes apparent. Yet, amid these difficulties, there exists a symbol of hope and resilience—our local businesses.

CONNECTION

When we choose local, we choose connection. Local businesses are not just faceless corporate entities; they are the familiar smiles, the heartbeat of our neighbourhoods. By supporting them, we forge connections that go beyond transactional boundaries. It’s a handshake with a business owner who knows your name, a shared nod of acknowledgment that strengthens the communal bond.

COLLABORATION

Local businesses often collaborate, creating a network of interconnected ventures that amplify their impact. When we support local, we contribute to this ecosystem of collaboration, where businesses join forces to innovate, share resources, and

collectively elevate the community. It’s the spirit of collaboration that turns challenges into opportunities and transforms our local landscape into a dynamic, resilient ecosystem.

SHARED PROSPERITY

When we choose to spend our dollars locally, we are investing in the vitality of our community. Local businesses create job opportunities, fostering economic growth that resonates beyond the balance sheets. A thriving local economy doesn’t just benefit business owners; it permeates into every household, uplifting families and shaping the future of our community.

GENEROSITY

Local businesses are more than just providers of goods and services; they are invested in the well-being of the community. Whether it’s sponsoring local events like the annual holiday carols, supporting charities, or actively participating in community initiatives, local businesses are generous contributors to the social fabric. By choosing local, we become part of this virtuous cycle of giving and receiving, where the community's well-being becomes a shared responsibility.

AUTHENTICITY

Every local establishment carries a unique story, reflecting the passion and dedication of its founders. When we choose local, we celebrate authenticity over uniformity. It’s a conscious decision to embrace diversity and cherish the distinctiveness that local businesses bring to our community.

Let’s continue to buy local and become active participants in shaping a community that thrives on the values that truly matter. Every purchase made from businesses in this paradise we call home becomes an investment in the future of the community we love.

Creating a brand The birth of Guy Kempt

With a career spanning decades in marketing, advertising and branding, Stuart Peace has honed his skills to perfection. His creative spirit, inherited from a family with an artistic background, found a natural fit in the marketing and branding arena.

Today, embarking on an entrepreneurial journey into eCommerce, he stands at the helm of Guy Kempt, his new men's grooming brand that embodies authenticity, quality, and a celebration of masculinity.

According to Stuart, branding is more than just a name, a logo or a tagline; it is the essence of a business. It encompasses a company’s purpose, vision, and mission, forging a true connection with its audience. Think Apple, Nike, Bunnings and Lorna Jane and you understand. Effective branding allows a business to stand the test of time and inspire customer loyalty. It is the heart and soul of all successful businesses.

“It’s about telling a story about why you exist and what you stand for. It is those emotional connections that make people ambassadors and advocates for your brand,” Stuart says.

Having been instrumental in shaping brands for numerous clients internationally over the years, Stuart had a nagging desire to craft something uniquely his own. The concept was simple yet profound: create a tangible product, something he could touch, smell and sell. He had the idea of crafting handmade soap bars, which he envisioned selling at local markets. The synergy between his creative instincts and entrepreneurial drive became the driving force behind the birth of Guy Kempt.

Guy Kempt is far from being just another men's grooming line. Stuart's commitment to crafting top-tier products using natural ingredients sets his brand apart. Each

soap bar is meticulously handcrafted in small batches, utilising only the finest natural components such as olive oil, shea butter, and essential oils.

The product range boasts scents like sandalwood, blood orange, rosemary and lemongrass, catering to the discerning male. Guy Kempt products, including the upcoming silicon-based Man Mitt, are designed to offer an authentic, masculine experience in the shower.

“In a world where most men’s grooming products smell like flowers, Guy Kempt is a breath of fresh air,” Stuart says.

“We provide men with the opportunity to smell like men, to embrace their masculinity.”

Beyond crafting high-quality grooming products, Guy Kempt is on a mission to support men's mental health. Stuart firmly believes in the importance of fostering a community where men can be themselves, free from societal pressures and stereotypes.

“A lot has changed in our society, and sometimes, being a man is looked down upon. Guy Kempt is here to say, ‘It’s okay to be a man.’ We are committed to donating a percentage of our profits to men's mental health initiatives, ensuring that those who need it can access support,” Stuart says.

Guy Kempt's journey has only just begun. Stuart has exciting plans for the brand, including the introduction of Soapscriptions, a subscription service that allows customers to receive their favourite soap bars regularly.

In the world of eCommerce, Guy Kempt is poised to make a significant impact. Stuart’ s extensive experience in branding, marketing, and entrepreneurship positions the brand for success, promising

a bright future filled with high-quality grooming products and a genuine commitment to men’s well-being. As the Guy Kempt brand continues to grow, it promises to redefine men's grooming, one invigorating shower at a time.

An eye check can save your life

Best Practice Eyecare

Eyes, often referred to as the windows to the soul, offer us a unique perspective on the world. However, the hustle and bustle of modern life, coupled with extensive screen time, can take a toll on our vision. Thus, a commitment to nurturing our eyes marks a poignant new beginning in our health journey.

The first step in this endeavour involves regular eye check-ups. Just as we schedule routine visits to the dentist or the general practitioner, prioritising comprehensive eye examinations ensures early detection of potential issues. These examinations go beyond assessing visual acuity; they encompass a thorough evaluation of ocular health, detecting conditions such as glaucoma, cataracts, or macular degeneration that may compromise vision over time. Embracing regular eye checkups is a conscious choice to safeguard one of our most precious senses. Several life-

threatening diseases can show their first symptoms in our eyes. Equally important is adopting a lifestyle that supports optimal eye health. A diet rich in nutrients such as vitamins A, C, and E, as well as minerals like zinc, can contribute significantly to maintaining healthy eyes. Foods like leafy greens, colourful fruits, and omega-3 fatty acids found in fish, flax seed and avocados can be instrumental in providing the nourishment that our eyes require.

Additionally, safeguarding our eyes from harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays underscores the importance of proactive health management. Sunglasses with UV protection shield our eyes from the damaging effects of sunlight, preventing conditions like cataracts, pterygia and macular degeneration. This simple yet crucial habit marks a new beginning—a commitment to preserving our eyesight and cherishing the gift of clear vision.

Embracing new beginnings in the context

of eye health involves a multifaceted approach encompassing regular check-ups, a nutrient-rich diet, mindful screen habits, and protective measures against harmful UV rays. Your GP or optometrist can refer you to Dr Michael Karpa at Best Practice Eyecare if you need to follow up on any concerns. An eye check can save your life!

A soul-soothing magic facial Your Face Matters

Regular facials are like a refreshing sip of sunshine for your skin, especially in a place as radiant as the Sunshine Coast. Hydration needs to take centre stage in your skincare ritual, acting as the ultimate drink for your skin’s thirst. Imagine it as a cool, revitalising wave washing over your face, replenishing moisture and leaving you with a luminous glow.

Deep cleansing is the superhero move that clears away the day’s (week’s or month’s) grime and stress, giving your skin room to breathe. It’s like a mini vacation for your pores, waving goodbye to impurities and welcoming a fresh start. And let’s talk about those pesky lines – facials are like little time - traveling escapades, helping to smooth out the wrinkles and leaving you with a canvas that whispers timeless beauty.

Now, let’s dive into the soul-soothing magic. Picture this: a serene oasis where a skilled therapist dances their fingers along

your neck, shoulders, and face, creating a symphony of relaxation. It’s not just about the skin-deep benefits; it’s a holistic experience that transcends into your very being. The stress of the day, week, month or year melts away, replaced by a tranquil calm that echoes the gentle waves at Mooloolaba beach.

Incorporating a massage into your facial isn’t just a luxury; it’s a necessity for your soul. It’s a reminder that self-care isn’t selfish but a beautiful act of self-love. A facial which includes a massage is a harmonious dance, leaving you not only looking rejuvenated but feeling like a sun-kissed goddess from within.

So, why are regular facials essential? They’re a celebration of your skin, a rejuvenation of your spirit, and a reminder that indulging in self-care is a journey to radiance, both inside and out.

The power of personal branding Empire Art Photography

The world of modern business requires more than just a unique idea or a robust business plan to remain visible. It demands a strong personal brand, and at the heart of this lies the power of personal branding photography.

The advent of digital media has drastically reshaped how businesses interact with their audience. In this visually driven era, personal branding photography has emerged as a crucial tool for entrepreneurs and professionals. It’s not just about having a headshot; it’s about crafting an image that tells your story, conveys your values, and connects with your audience on a deeper level.

A compelling personal brand image does more than just catch the eye; it speaks volumes about who you are and what you stand for. It’s a visual narrative that encapsulates your professional journey, your ethos, and your unique selling proposition. In an increasingly crowded marketplace, personal branding

photography sets you apart, creating a memorable identity that resonates with your target audience.

Consider the impact of a well-conceived brand image. It’s the first interaction a potential client has with your brand. A professional, authentic photograph can build trust and credibility instantly. It’s a silent yet powerful communicator that works tirelessly across various platforms – be it your website, social media, or marketing materials.

Moreover, sustainability in business isn’t just about enduring; it’s about evolving and staying relevant. Personal branding photography isn’t a one-off exercise; it’s an ongoing process of aligning your image with your brand's growth and direction. As your business evolves, so should your brand image, reflecting the changes and milestones along your journey. This continual evolution keeps your brand fresh and relevant, ensuring that your audience remains engaged and connected.

Your image is an investment in your brand’s future. It’s an essential tool in your branding arsenal, one that requires thought, creativity, and a strategic approach. This is where the expertise of professional branding photographers comes into play. They don't just capture images; they capture the essence of who you are and what your brand stands for.

Why it pays to invest in solar

Electricity bills can be a drain on your wallet, whether you're a homeowner or running a business. But here's the good news: solar energy can significantly reduce those bills, and it's more affordable than ever because our government contributes to the upfront cost. It will add value to your property and helps protect our beautiful planet with renewable energy. Here’s a few commonly asked questions:

How many panels can I install on my roof? As many as you can, as the energy you generate from the sun is free.

Should I consider a battery? The Queensland Government just announced we are finally getting a battery subsidy – this means you can get $3000 to $4000 off a battery now.

What is the warranty on a solar system and battery? Panels have a 25-year warranty, whereas inverters and batteries have a 10-year warranty.

If I get a solar system, how can I find the best power company?

Check out www.wattever.com.au for daily updates on power companies by state and their deals.

Investing in solar is not just a smart financial move; it’s a step towards a greener future. So why wait? The answers you seek are already within reach, and the sun is shining on your opportunity to save!

No more separation anxiety at Animal Emergency Service Tanawha

Have you ever experienced the worry and concern that accompanies handing your sick or injured pet over to the veterinary nurse, only to watch them disappear through the doors to the unknown “back” of the hospital? Or perhaps you've felt that unsettling separation anxiety, not knowing what happens next as your beloved companion embarks on their journey to wellness? In the world of veterinary care, Animal Emergency Service in Tanawha, led by co-directors Alison Stewart and veterinarian Dr. Danielle Huston, understands these emotions all too well.

Their new beginning is a pioneering shift towards an open hospital concept where clients can now accompany their furry family members during their veterinary visits. This transformative approach addresses these fears head-on while offering a multitude of benefits, all amidst the backdrop of challenges that come with this bold change in the way we care for our pets in times of need.

Some benefits of an open hospital include:

• enhanced client education and understanding of their pet's care, time and associated costs,

• improved trust and confidence through direct observation of the clinical team's skill, expertise and compassion, and

• reduced stress for both pets and their owners.

However, this progressive move is not without its challenges, which may include:

• witnessing unexpected and potentially distressing cases,

• safety considerations within a functioning hospital, and

• the pressure it places on the veterinary team as they perform their duties under the watchful eyes of clients.

As Animal Emergency Service embarks on this transformative journey, they navigate the delicate balance between these advantages and challenges to provide optimal care for both pets and their devoted owners.

Safe holiday travel with pets

Holidays welcome thousands of visitors with their furry friends to the Sunshine Coast. Animal Emergency Service (AES) urges pet owners to embark on their vacations with safety in mind, to ensure a stress-free getaway for both you and your pets. Easter is a time when the AES hospital witnesses increased cases due to the following hazards:

Chocolate treats contain toxic substances that can be fatal for cats and dogs if ingested. Symptoms include vomiting and increased heart rate.

Hot cross buns are inappropriate snacks to share with pets because raisins can lead to renal failure.

Easter decorations like toy

eggs and bunny ears may seem like playful items to your pet but can pose serious risks if ingested, potentially requiring surgery.

Keep them out of reach to prevent emergencies. If any of the above are ingested, seek immediate vet attention.

Begin your Sunshine Coast holiday with your pets armed with knowledge and precautions. AES wishes you a safe and hazard-free Easter celebration. We are open 24/7 and no appointment is required. Our hospital policy aims to keep you with your pet as much as possible throughout their treatment journey.

The power of your authentic story

Your authentic story can change the world! Now, that’s a massive statement, but as an award-winning businesswoman, I know this to be true.

You don’t have to jump from tall buildings or leap over skyscrapers like superman, you simply have to share your story authentically, sounds easy right?

But there are things that hold you back. If you are among the 90 per cent of aspiring authors I’ve had the privilege of working alongside, you may have a lack of confidence when it comes to writing, even though you may be an otherwise confident person. You may not have uncovered your voice or the strength of your message yet. Maybe questions like ‘Who’s going to listen to me anyway?’ or ‘Who am I to write a book?’ eat you up at night.

Which is tragic because it means your self-doubt rules and your story dies with you. The world doesn’t get to read the gifts that you have extracted from your life. Your experiences don’t fulfill the purpose they were meant to. But what if you knew that your story holds the power to inspire, to connect, and to transform not only yourself but also countless others around the world? What if, by embracing your authenticity and finding your voice, you could unlock new opportunities and propel your career to unprecedented heights? Through years of working alongside aspiring authors, I have found three core components essential for success on the path to becoming a published author, all of which are detailed in her award-winning book, The Mindful Author.

AUTHENTICITY

In this era when everyone’s BS radars are finely tuned, readers can smell insincerity a mile away. Be brave enough to step up and share this authentic story, never feel like you have to be a Brene Brown or Brendan Burchard clone in order to be taken seriously – there are people out there who need to hear your story in your words!

CONNECTION

Connection lies at the core of every book that has shaped who you are over the years. The key is to create a book that connects as strongly

with your core message, values, and beliefs as it does with your readers’. When you do this, they will feel like they know you and this leads to trust. Connection to yourself, your story and your audience is key.

TRANSFORMATION

Becoming an author is about so much more than simply slapping words between two covers – those who can align their personal story with their business goals have the potential to unlock new opportunities. The potential to leverage your book to become an industry commentator, a renowned leader, a sought-after consultant, and even a speaker on a global scale is limitless – you can take it as far as you want to.

So, if you’re tired of putting off your dreams of becoming an author, I invite you to take the next step. Whether it’s attending an Ignite & Write Workshop to kickstart your journey or enlisting the expertise of my award-winning ghostwriting services, now is the time to make your mark.

Your authentic story has the potential to change the world. It's time to unleash its power and embark on a journey of empowerment, influence, and success. Let’s write the next chapter together. u

Montville Chamber of Commerce Inc.

Starting a new business is thrilling yet challenging, especially when unfamiliar with the local business landscape. In Montville, the Chamber of Commerce plays a pivotal role in easing this transition and advocating for the needs of new businesses.

Our approach begins with a warm welcome, offering personal connections and a listening ear to newcomers. Monthly meetings provide valuable networking opportunities, fostering a sense of belonging within the community. Understanding that each business has unique needs, the chamber facilitates connections with resources like the Sunshine Coast Council's Economic Development team, offering assistance tailored to individual challenges. Their timely advice has helped businesses navigate regulatory processes, such as obtaining licenses. Increased visibility within the business community, facilitated by chamber events and promotions, has led to tangible business growth for many newcomers.

To further support new businesses, the chamber offers a range of programs and events. From social gatherings to workshops on branding and business mentoring, these initiatives provide invaluable resources for success. Engaging with the chamber community is encouraged through face-to-face networking, collaborative events, and cross-promotional opportunities. By working together with neighbouring chambers and local authorities, the Montville Chamber of Commerce endeavours to ensure that new businesses feel supported and empowered to thrive.
