Vanuit een ziekenhuisbed kijkt de arts Anberber terug naar drie belangrijke periodes in zijn leven, dat tegelijk het leven is van Ethiopië. Tijdens een studie medicijnen in Keulen maakt hij kennis met het socialisme en hij keert als verlicht intellectueel terug naar Addis Abeba, om daar te ontdekken dat het marxistische regime van Mengistu Haile Mariam het land in een dictatuur heeft veranderd. Tijdens de val van de Berlijnse muur is hij weer in Duitsland, waar hij zwaar wordt mishandeld. Zo komt hij in het ziekenhuisbed terecht. Ongedwongen maar onontkoombaar schetst de Ethiopische regisseur Haile Gerima het lot van Anberber als het lot van Ethiopië. Het land is als de gewonde man op zoek naar zijn verleden, naar geschiedenissen die het misschien heel kunnen maken.
Perunika Trio als het ware een geconcentreerd koor – met eenzelfde indringend, betoverend effect.
Drie zangeressen met Macedonische wortels maar opgegroeid in Bulgaarse steden en nu wonend in Londen: het Perunika Trio. Ze kwamen met elkaar in contact als leden van het London Bulgaria Choir en besloten als trio zelfstandig door te gaan. Hun muziek is sterk beïnvloed door de traditionele muziek van Bulgarije, Macedonië, Servië en Rusland en ruimer: door de orthodoxe liederen en het Slavische repertoire. Met slechts sporadisch een sobere begeleiding doen ze soms denken aan Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares. Met alleen hun drie stemmen vormen de zangeressen van het
The Perunika Trio consists of three female vocalists with Macedonian roots who were raised in Bulgarian cities and now live in London. They met each other as members of the London Bulgaria Choir and decided to carry on together independently as a trio. Their music is strongly influenced by folk music from Bulgaria, Macedonia, Serbia and Russia as well as by Orthodox songs and the Slavic repertoire. Their occasional performances with minimal accompaniment are sometimes reminiscent of Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares. Using only their voices, the three singers in the Perunika Trio could be likened to a distilled choir – with the same powerful, enchanting effect.
Confined to a hospital bed Doctor Anberber looks back on three important periods in his life, which are also a reflection of Ethiopia’s own experiences. While studying medicine in Keulen, Gemany, he was introduced to socialism and returned to Addis Ababa an enlightened intellectual, only to discover that Mengistu Haile Mariam’s Marxist regime had turned the country into a dictatorship. Back in Germany when the Berlin Wall fell, he was badly beaten and ended he ended up in hospital. Ethiopian director Haile Gerima portrays the Anberber’s fate as the fate of Ethiopia in an informal yet unequivocal way. The country is like a wounded man searching for his past, for events that might make it whole.
