Annual Report 2022

Executive Director's Report

The Masonic Home of Missouri is simply an amazing charity. It has 130+ years of helping Missouri Masons and their wives, Masonic widows, Eastern Star ladies, and dependent children. In that long and proud history, this year stands out as an exceptional year.

For the first time since the inception of the Outreach Programs, we provided over $2 million of direct assistance. Let that number sink in for a minute. In just one year, the Masonic Home of Missouri provided over $2 million dollars in direct assistance to those in need. This does not include any operational costs. This also means that every donor dollar went to help someone in need. The number of lives impacted by the Masonic Home’s Outreach Programs was an estimated 44,042. This is the highest number of lives impacted since the Masonic Home came into existence. This is more people than we could have ever possibly helped in a year in a facility. This number far surpasses the current number of Missouri Masons.

The Creating-A-Partnership Program came roaring back stronger and better than ever this year. The Masonic Home’s Board of Directors changed the

matching requirement and increased the total dollars that could potentially go into communities to help children in need. Over $777,000 went back into communities all across Missouri! The program was so successful that the Board of Directors extended the changes to the program for another year.

The Masonic Home’s core mission resides in our Financial Assistance Programs. We were happy to see an increase in our Long-Term Assistance Program, and we recognize that a decrease in Short-Term Assistance is actually a good sign. Short-Term Assistance is for younger members in crisis. Seeing a decrease from the highs during the pandemic tells us that few younger members were in crisis which is hopefully a trend that will continue into the next fiscal year.

This Annual Report will continue to highlight the changes that have been made in our fiscal management to meet the IRS 990 requirements regarding the public support test. There can be a lot of technical information when you start talking about the IRS. Here is the short version: the Masonic Home is currently defined as a public charity by the IRS. To maintain this charitable status, we must receive donations – public support –which translates to membership support.

$2,013,292

If the Masonic Home ceases to be supported by the membership, it is in danger of losing its public charity status. Over 60 percent of all assistance provided was to Masons, their wives, widows, Order of the Eastern Star members, and their dependent children. All that could change if the Masonic Home was no longer classified by the IRS as a public charity. Your financial support is imperative to protect the future of the charity, helping your brothers and sisters in need and ensuring the Masonic Home is there for those generations who come after you.

The Masonic Home is fiscally sound due to diligent management and member support for over a century. We cannot let that change on our watch, especially considering we are truly living up to the statement:

“We are where you are.”

It is with great excitement that we share this Annual Report. We are grateful to all of the Lodges and Chapters that worked our Outreach Programs this past year. There is no doubt – we are making a difference together. The Masonic Home is an amazing charity, and I cannot wait to see what we will do together in the year to come!

Barbara Jefferies

When Barbara Jefferies was diagnosed with dementia, her family knew she would need the care of an assisted living facility in the future. They also knew they could not continue to pay for that care out-of-pocket forever.

Barbara came from generations of Masons, and she joined Job’s Daughters as a child before becoming a member of the Order of the Eastern Star as an adult and then marrying a Mason. Barbara’s sons were aware that the Masonic Home of Missouri had some sort of assistance available through the Outreach Programs, but they were not certain what that meant or if their mother would qualify.

A call to the Masonic Home started a relationship between the Jefferies family and the Outreach caseworkers that would change everything for Barbara, as the family worked on finding appropriate placement for her to meet her care needs.

More than a year after that initial contact, Barbara qualified for financial assistance. The caseworker maintained regular contact with the family during that time, helping to find resources and giving guidance on how to ensure their mother would qualify when the time came.

Barbara is one of our honored Masonic Widows and Order of the Eastern Star members receiving monthly assistance to help her stay where she can receive the care she needs.

The Masonic Home stepped in to help us breach the gap between what she can afford and what she needs to continue her care. You don’t know how much you are changing lives and helping ... you’re helping ... thank you!”

Fiscal Year 2022 was a successful year for the Masonic Home and its clients, donors, staff and Board members.

To quote Past Grand Master John Nations, the Masonic Home helped “more people in more places than ever before.” This statement, true in MWB Na tions’ year as President of the Masonic Home Board, was even more fitting this year with over $2 million of direct assistance provided and over 44,000 lives touched through our programs.

Individual and organizational giving increased by an impressive 41% this year. Thank you to all of the generous individuals that made the work of the Ma sonic Home possible. This year’s giving level exceeded pre-pandemic averages.

We also received an impressive, surprise estate gift from a gentleman named Donald Johnson. He had never previously given to the Masonic Home, nor was he a Missouri Mason (Illinois member). We received a beautiful write-up about him from the trust company when I asked about him and why he may have chosen the Masonic Home, but the extent of our knowledge ends there. I would have loved the opportunity to know him, to thank him and to really tell him the impact of his gift. Maybe he wasn’t interested in recognition. Maybe he didn’t want to be bothered. I just can’t help feeling that we missed an opportunity to give him

a better donor experience. We would have honored either or both of those wishes. Surprise gifts are greatly appreciated, and his gift will live on and provide for tens of thousands of children for years to come. He gave so much to us; I wish we could have given more to him.

If you have included, or are considering including, the Masonic Home in your will, please talk to us about that. We would love an opportunity to sit across from you, to hear about what is important to you and to ensure that the gift is set up and used the way you wish. And, we really love to say thank you.

Lodges and Chapters, and their members, financially support the Masonic Home in various ways. The will to support the Masonic Home through the Penny-A-Day Program has taken off within Eastern Star Chapters. Chapter Penny-A-Day donations increased by 60% and accounted for 23% of total PAD gifts. Lodge support for the Masonic Home through the Penny-A-Day Program has continued to decline – decreasing by 42% this year. In an effort to revive this program, dime and dollar levels were added, along with the ability to be recognized through The Truman Club.

Total expenses increased, with Outreach Program expenses accounting for 77% of the increase. Program expenses alone increased by 21%. Program expenses accounted for 70% of all expenses. That means that 70 cents of every dollar spent by the Masonic Home was

spent to help our clients, children, widows, and veterans. Donations funded 41% of direct Outreach assistance, with the remaining assistance and all administrative expenses funded by investments. This means that 100% of every donor dollar went to help clients.

Total assets decreased by 13% due to investment market conditions. Slightly over 50% of total investment assets are permanently restricted, which means the Masonic Home cannot use those funds, barring a major catastrophe.

The IRS Public Support Test remained at the fore front of our minds. The test requires that a third of total revenue over 5 years come from donations. A century of excellent stewardship has led to substantial investment balances, which led to significant investment income.

Over the past 20 years, bequest and other donations decreased dramatically, making it impossible to meet the one-third threshold. After failing the test for years, the Masonic Home Board took an aggressive stance on passing late last year, creating a multi-year strategy. Part One of the strategy was to minimize investment income, which has been done successfully. Over 66% of total revenue for Fiscal Year 2022 alone came from donations. This is a huge accomplishment.

Part Two of the strategy is to strengthen our fund raising efforts. This is an on-going effort, and we need your help. To protect the Masonic Home as a publicly supported charity as defined by the IRS, and to receive the benefits associated with that classification, we need donor support. We hope that you will join us in carrying out the mission of the Masonic Home – helping more people in more places year after year.
