Annual Report 2021

With Gratitude

When I wrote this report last year, I remember being concerned about what was ahead, given the uncertainty surrounding the pandemic. I did hope that when the Annual Report came around this year, we would be happily celebrating the pandemic being mostly behind us. This past year proved to be another difficult one, and it seems that challenges brought on by the pandemic will continue into this next year.

One of the things that we were very proud of last year was the fact that the Masonic Home of Missouri never stopped helping our clients. In fact, the assistance provided increased, as you will see in this year’s Annual Report. Through the Masonic Home’s Outreach Programs, this year we provided $1,474,377 in assistance.

Although overall assistance increased, the Partnership Programs saw decreases. For the first time since the inception of the Partnering To Honor program, there were no requests. The pandemic simply stopped the Honor Flights. The CreatingA-Partnership program also saw decreases due to a variety of factors caused by the pandemic.

The pandemic brought forward an unexpected opportunity, too. Due to COVID-19’s impact on the markets, the Masonic Home saw decreases in the amount of investment income it was earning. At the same time, the Masonic Home saw increases in donations from the membership.

For years, the Masonic Home has been reporting on the struggle between investment income and

Executive Director's Report

donations. The Masonic Home has not been receiving enough financial support to cover the cost of the Outreach Programs. The Masonic Home has increasingly relied on investment income, but this, as a long-term strategy, risks the charity’s ability to maintain its status as a publicly supported charity.

The Board of Directors made the decision to work on correcting the course for the Masonic Home going forward. This means a decrease in investment income and a renewed focus on support from our donors, business partners, and the membership. This is not a one-year problem, but significant changes were made this year to start us down this important path.

The Board of Directors recognizes that the needs in our communities are great right now. Lodges and Chapters have not been able to work as they had in the past. With this in mind, the Masonic Home is changing matching funds for the Creating-APartnership program this next fiscal year. For every dollar donated by the Lodge or Chapter, the Masonic Home will match it with two dollars.

The Masonic Home of Missouri was incorporated 135 years ago. The Masonic Home struggled initially, but it managed to find its way with leadership, vision, and support. The Masonic Home supported those in need during two World Wars and the Great Depression. As current day leaders, it has become our turn to take care of this charity during crisis. It is our responsibility to ensure that the Masonic Home is able to continue helping those in need during this pandemic and whatever comes next.

The O’Bryants

When we met Joseph O’Bryant, he was receiving medical treatments for a rare blood clotting disorder and was unable to work. His wife, Candice, was also kept from working by Lupus. Life, however, was not stopping around them. They still had a home to maintain, bills to pay, and children to care for.

While Candice O’Bryant had anxiety about their mounting bills and ability to adapt and care for their family, Joseph tells us he was not. He knew that God would provide for him, and through the Masonic Home, he was right.

Since we met them just four years ago, the couple has been confronted with a car accident, a knee replacement, and cancer — each pushing back the day when Joseph O’Bryant will be able to return to his business full-time.

We know it will mean the world to Joseph and Candice when that day comes, but in the meantime, the Masonic Home of Missouri is here for them.

would be one that needed help.”

Creating-A-Partnership Is BIGGER for FY2022!

We want to help you and your community recover from the financial impact of COVID-19, so we are doing a BIG thing! The Masonic Home of Missouri Board of Directors voted to make some BIG changes to the CAP program for the upcoming fiscal year.

Starting July 1, 2021, we are doubling our match for the Creating-A-Partnership program! That means that for every $1 your Lodge or Chapter raises, you can put $3 back into kids in your community.

The Board also chose to increase the maximum we will match from $10,000 per Lodge or Chapter to $15,000 per Lodge or Chapter!

That means every Lodge and every Chapter has the opportunity to donate $45,000 to the needs of children in their community.

We cannot wait to see the impact we will make on your communities together. Now, who’s ready to do some BIG things with us?

VETERANS PROGRAM

A Word from the Director of Finance

Fiscal Year 2021 . . . the sequel to 2020.

Throughout this Annual Report, you will notice the use of phrases such as “continuing impact.”

This is because we continue to see the effects of the pandemic, with no real end in sight.

As with last year, the economic situation created by the pandemic impacted our revenues, expenses, and processes. However, not all areas of impact mimicked 2020. In sharp contrast to last year’s 44% decline in donor support, this year, we saw an increase of 29%, bringing us back to a level that is just slightly less than our pre-pandemic annual support average.

Modified working conditions continued for most of the fiscal year, including suspended travel, remote work, mask requirements, quarantines, and temperature taking. We are happy to report that no Masonic Home employee has contracted COVID-19 to date. All of these conditions, however, came with financial implications.

Expenses were impacted as well. Need continued to rise, resulting in a 14% increase in Long-Term Financial Assistance, a 129% increase in Children’s Outreach, and a 143% increase in Short-Term Monthly Financial Assistance. Total Financial

Assistance increased by 12% versus last year, coming in 30% higher than pre-pandemic levels.

Partnership Program costs decreased by 32% versus last year. This continues to be directly related to school closures, lodge and chapter closures, and the suspension of Honor Flights. These programs are down by 41% from pre-pandemic levels.

Investments continued to rebound from the sharp decline in early 2020, ending the year with a substantial increase in market value. Investment income decreased dramatically due to market conditions during the first three quarters of the fiscal year.

The Board of Directors took this opportunity to take an aggressive stance on passing the IRS Public Support Test. The test requires that at least a third of total revenues over a five-year period come from donations. Because current and past leadership has taken great care of the funds of the Masonic Home for over a century, investments have grown to provide a level of income that makes it difficult to pass this test. It is in the best interest of our clients and our donors to retain classification as a public charity, as classification as a private foundation comes with tax consequences for the organization, limits on tax-

Revenue Source

The need for our donors is greater than ever.

contributions and expense requirements. A short-term strategy was implemented to reduce investment income to help provide the Masonic Home the ability, with increased fundraising efforts, to pass this test over a period of several years. Although implemented later in the year, the impact on the current year percentage was substantial, almost achieving the required threshold for this single year.

Adjusting investment income is only half of the challenge to pass the test. The second half is increasing our commitment to fundraising. Although the assets of the organization have grown, the need for donor support has not lessened. Between the rising need of the membership and the IRS rules on support, the need for our donors is greater than ever.
