Mason Cree

Hello,
My name is Mason Cree and I am in my final year of study at Griffith University for a Bachelor of Architectural Design. This portfolio has been compiled to showcase my skills and experience within the realm of architecture and design throughout my journey so far.
Architecture is an essential part of our lives which influences the way we as humans live, work, and connect with the world. Through architecture I believe that we can aid in designing spaces which are not only aesthetically beautiful, but functional parts of our lives that promote well-being and address social and cultural issues.

Palm Beach, QLD Pavilion Dwelling 2024
‘Womens Transitional Facility’
CITY SYSTEMS
Place: Currumbin Waters, QLD
Year: 2024
Type: Transitional Facility
Tutor: Liz Watt
The natural water systems of Currumbin akin to the occupants of the transitional facility are in a state of liminality, a temporary threshold between solitude and the convergence into the wider community.
This transitional facility takes inspiration from the ecological and city systems within Currumbin to create a space which fosters repair and rehabilitation not incarceration. These city systems include pathways, nodes, edges, districts, landmarks and infrastructure found within Kevin Lynch’s ‘The Image of the City’. These city systems were analysed at both a city and site scale to create a micro-city.

‘Ascence Wellness Centre’
CONTEXTUAL AWARENESS
Place: Murwillumbah, NSW
Year: 2023
Type: Mental Health Facility
Tutor: Jessica Blair
The journey of life akin to the Tweed River is not linear in essence, rather a meandering flow of energy which the Bundjalung people were well aware of guiding their movements through the land. Just as life is one continuous ascent, the center is choreographed to symbolise the different markers towards holistic wellbeing. Each floor containing spatial moments which aid in providing this achievement.
Ascence Wellness Centre embraces the notion of the journeying in a literal and metaphorical context. Reflecting the aspirations of individuals seeking a pathway to holistic wellbeing, it represents a transformative expedition towards personal growth by guiding inhabitants to reconnect with spirit, country and community. The concept takes inspiration from the temporary movements of the Bundjalung people along the Tweed river and scenic rim of Murwillumbah and their deep connection to country.

‘Youth Development Centre’
CONTEXTUAL AWARENESS
Place: Southport, QLD
Year: 2023
Type: Community Centre
Tutor: Marli Moller
The Dowling Drive Development Centre has been designed to foster a sense of connection within the existing community. This space takes cues from surrounding playgrounds to enhance the theme of youth and play within the space.
The intention of the centre is that the older generation from the local area would come to teach the youth in a variety of different skills with an emphasis on ecology. The Centre features a dedicated learning space in which children from the surrounding schools may come together and learn from the older generation enhancing community connection. Additional features include a community garden consisting of native Australian flora which acts as not only a space to learn about ecology, but as an immersive and explorative experience.
While the primary role of the project it to foster learning and development, it was crucial that the centre appeal to all potential users. To achieve this the multiple programs such as a café and open studio/workshop spaces have been established where all members of the community can come for social gatherings and to participate in activities such as yoga, art or relaxation.

‘The Mantle’
SECTIONED SPACES AND PLACES
Place: North Burleigh Headland, QLD
Year: 2022
Type: Performance Art Stage
Tutor: Joanne Choueiri
Establishing a connection between the local fire twirling performances of Burleigh Heads and the Volcanic activity which forged the headland, The Mantle has been conceptualised to enhance the audience to performance connection by exaggerating the senses of awe and danger.
The monolithic design and permanent materiality connects The Mantle to the headland of North Burleigh by respecting the site context. The form derives from the shape of the headland itself which thousands of years ago was shaped by the intense volcanic activity of Wollumbin (Mt Warning). The interplay of light and shadow paired with the multifaceted form creates a stage that perfectly compliments the art of fire dancing.
