Marymount London Network In Remembrance Enduring Legacy Supporting our mission Upcoming Events

Headmistress’ Welcome

Dear Marymount community, Welcome to our first-semester edition of Marymount Matters. Each year, the School chooses a theme on which to focus. This year, we chose to be ‘Rooted in love - a heart without boundaries’ combining words from our mission statement (“rooted in love”) with those of Father Gailhac (“a heart without boundaries”) in the year celebrating this founder of the RSHM. Students and staff have opportunities yearround to reflect on how they can be rooted in love and to challenge themselves to exemplify a heart without boundaries. Over the Christmas period, kindness books were delivered, hampers collected for families in need, and funds were raised for various charitable causes. We are proud to be continuing the mission of Father Gailhac and the RSHM, as the Sisters of this order did before us. Since the summer, we have bid farewell to several RSHM Sisters whose work has been crucial to the foundation and history of our school. Sister Kathleen, Sister Anne Marie and Sister Michaeline are all former Heads of the school. Their legacy is still felt on campus through the building developments they oversaw and the programmes that they introduced. However, their influence has reached well beyond the campus through the staff and the students they inspired. We welcome your memories of these wonderful Sisters who gave so much to our community. I hope you will enjoy reading those that have already been shared on the Marymount London Network portal, launching in February 2024 (see page 16). Please enjoy this edition of Marymount Matters, and thank you for enriching our community. Mrs Margaret Giblin Headmistress

Congratulations Class of 2023 We are delighted to announce that the IB Diploma results for the Class of 2023 maintain the Marymount tradition of high academic achievement. Top score of 45 points We are delighted to share that one of our graduates received a top score of 45 points. Only 25 students in the UK achieved this top mark, and less than 800 students achieved this internationally. Average score: 36 points Our average score has remained consistent for the last nine years. Globally, this score is generally achieved by the top 15% of all students taking the IB Diploma exam. The world average is 30 points. 40+ points A very impressive 36% of our students scored 40 points or above (which is higher than A*A*A*A* at A-levels) which is typically achieved by only 5% of students worldwide. Bilingual IB Diploma The School is proud of the truly international education it offers and of the way it prepares its graduates for top-tier universities and global careers. Marymount graduates are multilingual, culturally fluent and instinctively internationally-minded, and the Class of 2023 is no different, representing as they do 38 different countries and with 43% achieving a Bilingual Diploma. 100% Pass Rate: Marymount graduates achieved a 100% pass rate in the IB Diploma, compared with a global pass rate of 79%. Well done, Class of 2023!

Summer BBQ The start of the school year at Marymount was a joyous occasion, marked by enthusiastic merriment and festivities in keeping with our cherished traditions. The Parents’ Association orchestrated a beautiful reception for both our new and returning families, igniting the academic new year with the unmistakable Marymount spirit. In the company of their families, students relished a classic BBQ alongside games and treats. The afternoon was a celebration of the Marymount community, and we are grateful to the dedication of our parent volunteers and staff for making it such a remarkable event. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Marymount parent community for their unwavering support and dedication. The commencement of the school year is a time for reflection and celebration as we embark on a new journey together. We are grateful for the opportunity to educate and nurture our students in partnership with their families, and we look forward to a year filled with academic excellence, personal growth, and community spirit.

Alumnae Reunion

Chatter, laughter, and refreshments flowed in abundance over two days of celebration and connection as over 90 alumnae, current staff, past staff, and guests came to campus. Five continents and nearly 20 countries were represented at this reunion, which brought together alumnae from all the classes. Our particular thanks to the Classes of 1983, 1988 and 1993, who led the way in terms of numbers. We are so grateful to everyone who came! Find more pictures on the Marymount London Network portal (more details on page 16).

“An unforgettable “Although the school weekend. I loved has changed, the Marymount spirit every minute remains the same, and of it.” that’s very beautiful.” Pilar Ducci, Class of 1983

Middle School Camp

Written by Ines, Grade 8 “Marymount students in Middle School get the amazing opportunity to visit Middle School camp (PGL) with their peers. The time that you have at Middle School camp in Grade 6 will be very different from the time that you have in Grade 8, but I can guarantee you that it will be one of your top highlights of the school year! As a Grade 6 student, I hoped to be able to get to know my peers better since I was new to the school. In my last year of Middle School, I realised how lucky I am to have this wonderful bonding time with my friends and peers. In Middle School camp, we partake in some pretty nerve-wracking but exciting activities such as giant swing, trapeze, and Jacob’s ladder. These activities help us as a Grade become better at communicating and strengthen our team-building skills. Although I wish that I could be able to go to PGL every single year, I realised that there will be other exciting activities in High School as well!” 6

Día de los Muertos Our traditional Halloween festivities and House games were certainly spooktacular again this year, with the Class of 2024 continuing the tradition of the Spook House and every Grade giving their all for their Halloween skits. The World Languages Department brought another cultural dimension by exploring the ‘Day of the Dead’ - or Día de los Muertos - a significant cultural day in the Spanish-speaking countries of Latin America. Many thanks to all those who facilitated these activities. November is a special month within the Christian calendar, as it is a month of remembrance for those we have loved and lost. On Wednesday, 1 November, we gathered as a whole school community to celebrate a Mass for the Feast of All Saints. Father Chris explained that on this day, we remember all saints, known and unknown, who have attained heaven. He also reminded us that these saints were ordinary people who lived good and holy lives. He encouraged us all to live our lives seeking to be kind and to be the light of God to others in this world.

Philip Pullman’s Grimm Tales Thoughts from the Cast and Crew “I remember first developing a keen interest in performing when I turned 9. I participated in plays in my primary school, but The Grimm Tales is a fun and interesting way to see what performing is like on a bigger scale. The cast and crew are super friendly and are all so supportive. It is a chance to make new friends and socialise with students in other grades. The Grimm Tales is an excellent play with lots of different mini plays inside it. This is my first school production at Marymount, and I am thrilled that it is with such a caring cast and crew. The Grimm Tales is an amazing play and was worth all the rehearsals.” Isabelle – Grade 6 Shoemaker/ Goose Storyteller/ Boat “Despite being a new student, I never felt isolated or embarrassed. On the contrary, this gave me a boost of confidence to perform proudly on the stage. Since I started my drama hobby at the age of 7, I have been going to auditions in Hong Kong consistently until the hit of the pandemic. COVID-19 limited my opportunities to audition, and this is my first ever piece after I have set foot in the UK which is exceptionally significant to my family and me. Hopefully, we can bring out a variety of perspectives and messages to the audience through our effort, expressive acting and lively choreography.” Danielle – Grade 8 The Princess of the Golden Roof/ The Rich Man “Costume and prop design has always been something I have been interested in, and I have really enjoyed learning more about the design elements of creating theatre over the years and more recently in DP Theatre. I am very grateful to Ms Szymczak for giving us the opportunity to work on a production on this scale, it has really helped to give us an idea of all of the different roles and responsibilities that go into works like this. Working on this production has been a really enjoyable experience.” Lucy - DP Grade 11 Theatre Head of Prop and Costume Design

Thanksgiving at Marymount Following a beautiful Thanksgiving Mass, led by Father Chris with the support of Campus Ministry, Marymount’s halls echoed with laughter and the tantalising aroma of roasted vegetables (and pumpkin and chocolate brownie). It couldn’t be anything other than the community gathering for a traditional Thanksgiving dinner. The catering team transformed the dining hall into a festive haven, its tables adorned with autumnal decorations. Students eagerly lined up to fill their plates with a cornucopia of Thanksgiving favourites, including mashed potatoes, gravy, cranberry sauce, and stuffing with all the trimmings.

Evening of Chamber Music This semester’s chamber concert was a delight for parents and music enthusiasts alike. Talented High School musicians performed a diverse repertoire, from 18th-century classics to modern masterpieces, with technical mastery and emotional depth. The audience was captivated by the performances and erupted into applause after every piece. The event showcased the transformative power of music and the dedication of Ms Stockall and the School's performing arts department.

10

Christmas Fair The Marymount Auditorium was transformed into a wonderland of festive cheer as the school’s annual Christmas Fair unfolded, organized by the dedicated Parents’ Association (PA). The event, held on a crisp winter afternoon, was a resounding success, bringing together the school community and beyond to celebrate the spirit of the season. The event’s success was a testament to the hard work and vision of the PA, who poured their energy into organising a truly magical experience for the entire school community. Their commitment to fostering a sense of belonging and celebrating the festive season shone through in every aspect of the fair, creating an afternoon to remember for all who participated.

Advent Carol Service

The festive season brought an extra dose of joy and harmony to Marymount as the annual Advent Carol Service unfolded, filling the auditorium with the familiar melodies of beloved carols. The audience, captivated by the students’ spirited performance, joined in the singing, creating a moment of shared harmony and pure Christmas spirit. The service’s success was a testament to the enduring warmth of the words of the Gospel and to the power of music to unite and inspire, reminding all that the true spirit of Christmas lies in the joy of sharing and the warmth of traditions. Well done to the Marymount choir for starting the final week of school with glorious music and beautiful songs!

Alumnae Through the Generations

Megumi Jouas (Class of 1991) and daughter Julie Jouas Yosano (Class of 2015) in the same graduation dress her mother wore. What are your favourite memories of Marymount? Megumi: Having nighttime talks in my room. People came to my room as I was the only one with a single room. I also loved the International spirit at the school. Julie: I loved spending free periods on the grass lawn with my friends, taking pictures and enjoying the sunlight. I also loved taking part in International Day and representing Japan. My roommate had a bunny back home in Germany, who she would FaceTime every night to say goodnight to. It was so lovely falling asleep to that, which is why I think German is such a soft and beautifulsounding language. Did you have any teachers in common? Mr Ripp. He actually remembered Megumi and that she was not good at maths, so he was pleasantly surprised when he realised Julie’s passion was maths. He helped her get into Cambridge for straight maths and is one of the reasons she became a maths teacher herself. Do you think much has changed from your time at Marymount? Megumi: Some aspects, like the new library but the warm and welcoming atmosphere, remain the same.

12

Why did you choose to send your daughter to Marymount? Megumi:At that time, Julie wanted to study further math for her IB curriculum, and Marymount International School was one of the schools she visited. So it was more Julie’s choice, but I feel so blessed that she could enjoy and make many wonderful friends there. I would like to send my prayer to all sisters of the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary who founded many schools across the world and continue to pray for the Marymount International School community. I would say Marymount is homely, international and encouraging. Julie: I think the confidence that Marymount has given me has really stayed with me and allowed me to achieve my dream of studying maths at university, becoming a teacher, and becoming a mother. Also, I do not really have a strong sense of where home is, as we have moved around a lot or may have an ambiguous national identity. Marymount gives me a little bit of a home, and the identity of being a Marymount girl gives me a group of people I belong with which is really nice.

Alumnae Through the Generations

“When I think of Marymount, I think of many wonderful things…but what stands out first in my mind was my first day with the incoming class. I will never forget the words of our headmistress, Sister Anne Marie Hill. She thanked all the parents there for entrusting their most prized possessions (their daughters) to the school’s care. She said that besides building their educational skills, they were our future mothers, and that was also important. Only one teacher was still there when my daughter attended: Miss Brown, the PE teacher. She looked exactly the same. I suppose I missed the nuns the most when my daughter attended. That was the biggest change for me. I chose Marymount for Shaleena because I love the ethos and nurturing that they have there. At Marymount, they know how to build self-esteem and are wonderful at discovering and building your daughter’s strengths. I loved being in a Catholic environment when I was there. I found the teachers to be approachable while I was there. I wouldn’t have done it any other way.” Veena Chanrai (Class of 1977)

What are your favourite memories of Marymount? Veena: My favourite memory was starting Marymount International School and being the only Grade 6 boarder and how all the upperclassmen (boarders) looked after me. Coming from another school where the kids intimidated me it was very refreshing to have unsolicited support from the Grades 10-12 students who took me under their wing to make sure I was ok.” What three words would describe Marymount? Shaleena: “Accepting, joyful & memorable.” What has stayed with you from your time at Marymount? Shaleena: My friendships, I am still incredibly close with a handful of girls I met in Grade 6 who remained with me until Grade 12– I have attended their weddings and given speeches. We have great memories that shaped us at Marymount International School and often look back at the incredible growing moments we have had together.”

Marymount London Network This February, Marymount is launching a new portal for the alumnae, past staff, and past parents of the School called the Marymount London Network. This portal will include events, news, and exclusive access to galleries and groups for members.

But why should you join?

The answer is simple: to connect, give back and grow.

Connect

Reminisce with fellow graduates, see what they have been up to and stay in touch.

“This year’s reunion wouldn’t have been as successful as it was without the incredible class reps. Their herculean efforts in reaching out to their communities meant that record numbers attended, guaranteeing many laughs and a lot of new, happy memories being made. This new portal will make organising future reunions so much easier as the Class groups pages allow alumnae to reach out to one another directly.”

“One of the best bits of being involved with Marymount as an alumna is meeting so many members of the community from all walks of life. I’ve really enjoyed getting to know alumnae from other Classes and sharing our experiences through the years, and I have made new industry contacts and friends.” Etain Fitzpatrick, Class of 1988.

“Grant to them Eternal rest.” Sr Anne Marie Hill, who died in January 2024 Sr Anne Marie was a remarkable presence in the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary (RSHM) for 67 years, dedicating her life to the realisation of their educational vision and to fostering collaborations within the Network and beyond. Sr Anne Marie Hill has a special place in the hearts of Marymount London, having been a teacher and Head of School here from 1974 to 1984. During that time, in keeping with her visionary leadership, she created a legacy which continues to enrich our school community today. She was also Head of School at Marymount Paris and Marymount Rome, and it was she who brought about the profound relationship between our schools. She introduced the Middle School Festivals which have enriched the lives of thousands of students over the decades.

Susan Kumnick, the current Global Network Coordinator said, “The Global Network of RSHM Schools stands securely on the shoulders of RSHM sisters who value education to transform the future by inspiring young people in our classrooms and beyond to know and carry on Father Gailhac’s mission “that all may have life”.” Our school certainly stands on the shoulders of those Sisters who went before, and one such key figure was Sr Anne Marie. Her achievements as an educator, a builder of schools, and a creator of networks, pale in comparison to her achievements as a human being. Sr. Anne Marie embraced her humanity and ours. Her capacity for giving love was matched by her unbounded capacity for inspiring it. We are truly grateful for the gift of her life”.

Sr Anne Marie saw the great strength in collaboration and in sharing ideas to build community. As such, she was a founding member of the London International Schools’ Association, which we are still a part of today. In addition, Sr Anne Marie was also instrumental in establishing the Marymount Network from which the RSHM Global Network was born. Today, our 19 schools across the world connect and collaborate by living out our shared school goals and criteria. For Sr Anne Marie, such international mindedness and connectivity, coupled with the aspiration to send our students out into the world as compassionate global citizens who will contribute meaningfully was key. We remain forever grateful for her inspirational leadership, personal engagement and long-lasting legacy. Those who had the privilege of working alongside her speak of her with great admiration and fondness.

As we take the time to remember Sr Anne Marie, we give thanks for the life she dedicated to the RSHM, to education, and to the Marymount Schools.

Sr Kathleen Fagan, who died in September 2023 Memories from the Headmistress at Marymount School of New York, Concepción Alvar Marymount School of New York was irrevocably changed by the extraordinary vision and bold leadership of Sr Kathleen Fagan. After graduating from Marymount New York in 1959, Sr Kathleen earned her BA from Marymount College in Tarrytown and an MA from the University of Notre Dame. She returned to her alma mater in 1969 as an English teacher and went on to become head of the Upper School in 1972. She served as the Headmistress of Marymount New York from 19762004. In 2004, Sr Kathleen became Headmistress of Marymount London and was later appointed Provincial of the Eastern American Province of the RSHM from 2009-2015. After her retirement, Sr Kathleen remained deeply connected to Marymount New York as Trustee Emerita and a mentor for trustees and administrators. Sr Kathleen embodied the Marymount mission throughout her life as a creative, divergent thinker; an advocate for social justice; and a champion of young women. She answered the call to religious life and then encouraged generations that followed to listen for and to answer God’s call in their own ways. She will be dearly missed.

19

Sr Michaeline O’Dwyer, who died in July 2023 Memories from the Headmistress of Marymount International School Rome, Sarah Gallagher Sr Michaeline was a pillar of the Marymount Network, particularly in the European schools. Whilst Rome was home to her for the majority of these past fifty years, she spent a wonderful period in Berkeley CA, served as interim Headmistress in London 2009-10 and again in Paris 2017-18, and was an invaluable Board member in Istituto Marymount, Paris, and London. Sr Michaeline was born to Irish parents in New York City on September 24, 1936; she joined the RSHM on September 8, 1954 shortly after her graduation from the Academy of the Sacred Heart of Mary in New York City. Having completed the Novitiate in August 1956, she was assigned to teach Third and Fourth Grade students at St. Andrew Elementary School in Sag Harbor at the tip of Long Island. From there she moved to Fifth Grade teaching at St. Anne’s Elementary School in Garden City: this was followed by a stint at the Academy of the Sacred Heart of Mary. In 1961 she returned to study, completing a Master’s degree in Biology at Marymount College Tarrytown and Fordham University. After her studies, she moved to Marymount College in Arlington, VA. in 1963 to teach in the Biology Department. Sr Michaeline also completed a nursing degree during this time. It was in 1970 that she first moved to Rome to Marymount International School. Her time in Rome was followed by a sabbatical year at the Jesuit School of Theology in Berkeley, CA. She remained in Berkeley as Director of Development until 1997 when she was called to serve on the Eastern American Province Leadership Team in Tarrytown for six years, and then as Provincial Councillor for another six years.

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace.

Enduring Legacy Our foundation is indebted to the enduring legacy of Father Gailhac and the Sisters of the RSHM. Their visionary efforts have laid the groundwork for a rich tradition of community and philanthropy that has profoundly shaped the School we know and love today. As we begin preparing for 70 years of the RSHM in Kingston and look into the future, we invite you to consider leaving a gift in your will. This act is a unique opportunity for you to make a lasting impact on the School, ensuring its continued growth for generations to come. By including a gift in your will, you play a vital role in sustaining the future of Marymount. Your legacy has the power to change lives.

1% can change a life Did you know that a gift in your will can be the most transformative gift you can make? You can provide for your family by ensuring 99% of your estate is left to them. Just 1% to charity will make a huge difference.

Gifts in your will are often tax-efficient All legacies at the current time to the School are free from UK Capital Gains Tax and Inheritance Tax as we are a registered charity (registration number 1117786). By choosing to make a gift in this way, you may reduce the total tax liability of your estate to your family. In the UK, for example, if your estate is worth over £325,000 and if you leave a minimum of 10% of your estate to charity, the tax due may be paid at a reduced rate of 36% instead of 40% on the balance of your estate. Always speak to a financial advisor to understand how a charitable gift could affect your loved ones.

Supporting our mission: nurturing caring, capable, courageous young women

The Annual Appeal seeks support for three key projects at the school; Partnerships, Bursaries and Campus Evolution. Partnerships: Supporting service

Regardless of their Grade, students take part in service at Marymount. It is woven into the very fabric of the curriculum: Grade 11 and 12 students participate through the CAS programme (Creativity, Activity & Service), and in the Middle Years Programme there is Service as Action. Opportunities for students to participate in service include Saturday School with a local partner school (St Joseph’s) and our Zambian sister school peer tutoring programme. Giving to Marymount means supporting the expansion of student service partnerships into different areas of need, both local and global. This ensures that when Marymount students graduate, they are aware of how they can and must make a positive impact on the world around them.

Supporting Bursaries at Marymount

Father Gailhac, the founder of the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary, spent his life working to support women and children, securing for them a bright, independent future. Following his example and that of the Religious Order he founded, Marymount believes that a family’s financial circumstances should not be a barrier to their daughter’s education. The Marymount Hardship Recovery Fund was established by the School in 2020, and several families relied upon it throughout the pandemic. In just 18 months, our community raised over £100,000 and supported 11 families through unprecedented difficulties. Despite the easing of economic challenges, the demand for financial support has not been reduced, so the Hardship Recovery Fund has evolved into the Bursaries Fund. We are grateful for the community’s continued support, allowing us to open our doors to students from every background.

Supporting Campus Evolution

Since 2012, Marymount has invested heavily in campus redevelopment. Our most recent transformations include the Main House, the STEAM Hub, improvements to the Auditorium and – most recently – the Sports Hall. The Governing Board have ensured prudent and sustained regeneration across the site, creating new and exciting spaces for all Marymount students. Donor support is built into the very foundations of every building on our beautiful seven-acre site. By giving to Marymount, you will be joining hundreds of families who have supported the School throughout its history. This unbroken chain of giving has helped Marymount become what it is today and will ensure the continued fulfilment of our ethos and mission.
