MSYSA Community Outreach
Last Month MSYSA attended the FundPlay Summit in Baltimore. Our Executive Director, Greg Smith lead the discussion on unlocking government funding at the 'Push for State Funding' roundtable.
Participants discovered how organizations are tapping into state appropriations. While also learning firsthand about MSYSA’s efforts to establish a new youth sports funding pool in collaboration with the state government.
MSYSA Director of Outreach, Nathean Meadows attended the Aspen Institute Project Play Summit. He joined Baltimore-area legends, including Cal Ripken Jr. and two-time Super Bowl winner Torrey Smith, in discussing how to deliver community impact through youth sports. Nathean also lead discussions at the Summit, presenting a session titled "How to Partner with Schools!
On May 15th, Gabby Carle visited Oak View Elementary School. She shared her passion for professional soccer with the students, recounting her experiences with the Spirit and as a member of Team Canada on the world stage. Carle highlighted the significance of representing her country in the World Cup and the Olympics, and proudly spoke about winning an Olympic Gold medal in 2021. During the Q&A session, one student's question stood out: "Who is your biggest inspiration?" Carle revealed that Brazilian legend Marta is one of her greatest inspirations both as a player and a person. After answering questions, Carle enjoyed playing soccer with the students, making the session both educational and fun.
On May 28th, Gaithersburg Elementary School welcomed MaKenna Morris to their Let’s Play! program. Morris, a versatile player for the Clemson Tigers for four seasons, was drafted by the Spirit in January 2024. As a Germantown native, she connected easily with the students through her Maryland roots and shared her journey of becoming a professional player. Morris also joined in the session's activities and scrimmages, playing alongside the students and adding excitement to the program. Both events were memorable experiences for the students, who were inspired by the stories and skills of the professional athletes.
USYS National ODP Team:
Congratulations to the National ODP teams for a successful spring season at the Easter Cup and in Costa Rica. A standout moment was their victory over the Costa Rica U20 World Cup team. These achievements at both the Easter Cup and in Costa Rica show the strength of the USYS ODP program.
The US Youth Soccer Olympic Development Program is a national identification and development program for high-level players. The program identifies and develops youth players throughout the country to represent their state and regional associations. At the state association level, pools of players are identified in each eligible age group, and brought together as a team to develop their skill through training and competition. From the state pools and subsequent teams, players are identified for regional and national pools and teams. Maryland State ODP teams are comprised of the best Maryland players in various age groups.

Soccer can be a catalyst for so many positive skills and emotions, from team spirit, to perseverance, to pushing one’s perceived boundaries to building communities. Being able to put my varied experience to the task in pursuit of this goal is a privilege.

The game of soccer has been a huge part of my life ever since I was a child. Ever since my playing career ended and my refereeing career began, my goal has been to improve the game and experience for the players and referee. In this role, I can continue to grow the game that I love by providing a highquality work environment for the match officials and in turn provide a safe, fun and healthy playing environment for the children on the field!
The Deputy State Youth Referee Administrator (SYRA) supports the SYRA in overseeing all referee needs for all MSYSA administered programs, cups, and events. The Deputy SYRA assigns referees for many matches each year to include a number of MSYSA sanctioned tournaments and leagues.
