EDITOR’S CORNER This issue’s “From the Editor” is actually a “To the Editor.” The following letter tells me that last issue’s cover story achieved precisely what we strive for on every page of each Knoller.

Mahalo, Dr. Oyama, for sharing your memories with all of us.

Dear Editor: I enjoyed the lead article by Fran Chow Wong ’69 on Troop 42 in the Summer 2002 issue of the Knoller. I was amazed and proud that Troop 42 is still functioning and with the same spirit and adventure of the past.

For me, the greatest years of Troop 42 were in the 1940s. We had an outstanding Scoutmaster in Mr. Rudolph Sylva. To many, little is known of this humble man except that he was in the first graduating class (1935) from Maryknoll High School. His twin brother was a Maryknoll priest. He lived on Dole Street near the campus and supported his elderly mother. He worked with the linemen for the Hawaiian Electric Company but spent all of this free time with the scouts.

I joined Troop 42 after Pearl Harbor and the Scoutmaster at that time was Police Officer Todd.

Mr. Silva was his assistant. Mr. Silva assumed the Scoutmaster’s position soon thereafter. We met in the basement of Bachelot Hall but moved into Bachelot Hall for more spacious accommodations. Also there were blackout regulations on Oahu and curfew was imposed after dark so we spent the night there after our meetings. Father Enwright later became his assistant.

All the scout members attended Maryknoll: Gabriel Ferrara, Gilbert Ferrara, Donald Yap, Richard Silva, Raymond Sato, Donald Lau, Wallace Takata, except Teddy Soong who I believe attended Roosevelt. (Apologies to scouts I forgot.)

We were the most active troop in Hawaii. We went hiking every weekend and camping whenever we had a chance. All our activities were limited to this Island. Mr. Silva knew the mountains on Oahu like the back of his hand. We never brought food or water. We lived from the land. He knew the location of every fruiting tree on the mountain. Some of the incredible places I have seen are permanently imprinted in my memory forvever. He spoke fluent Hawaiian and respected the land and sacred places. No matter where we were, we always managed to tidy up and go to the nearest church on Sunday.

His influence on each of us and the values he instilled will immortalize him. Furthermore, we had so much fun and joy being part of this troop. I will always look at Troop 42 and Mr. Rudolph Silva as synonymous. May Troop 42 continue and carry on this proud tradition.

Gender Politics 101

MORE SIMILARITIES THAN DIFFERENCES

I

cringe whenever I hear politicians – local or national – offer solutions for curing the ills of American education. Politicians generally offer simplistic slogans that will resonate with voters in the place of earnest reform and in-depth analysis. In short, they look for a quick fix since their term of office rarely provides the time it takes to achieve genuine results; moreover, education is but one issue that they hope to address during their time in office. That is how we came up with President Clinton’s long-forgotten “Goals 2000: Educate America Act” and now we are in the throes of President Bush’s bumper sticker initiative popularly known as “Leave No Child Behind.” The core of this initiative is what is now called The Standards Movement – the establishment of state and national standards by which individual student performance can be measured.

Few disagree with the establishment of standards, but there is little agreement about how they should be measured and, more importantly, what to do when students fail to meet the standards. For example, High Stakes Testing – using standardized tests to make “high stakes” decisions regarding promotion, retention in grade, or graduation from high school – has resulted in an alarming increase in the high school dropout rate. Surely these students are being “left behind.” While it is premature to advance any real evaluation of President Bush’s educational program, if his recent remarks encouraging single-sex education in public schools is indicative of his own knowledge base and the wisdom of his advisors, then I think we have little to look forward to in the way of genuine educational reform during this administration.

A MANDATE FOR CHOICE I am a firm believer in parental choice in education. My parents chose to place me in an all-boys Catholic school through almost my entire education. I joke that I didn’t know that girls went to school until I was a graduate student. So along with the right of students and parents to choose their educational environment comes the vital need for a rainbow of schools that address special interests, needs, and family concerns. Choice makes this possible and single sex schools are one viable choice. I suspect that the President’s remarks are fueled by research on coed schools that suggests that some girls fail to reach their academic potential in the coed setting. Moreover, brain research further indicates that boys and girls process some information differently.

Studies on how boys and girls learn came into their own in the 1980s and took hold with “Shortchanging Girls, Shortchanging America,” a 1992 report issued by the American Association of University Women (AAUW) that found young women were at a decided disadvantage in our schools. The report was followed by scores of studies detailing the differences in male and female learning styles, brain development, and growth needs. What the studies failed to acknowledge was that similarities of young boys and girls far exceeded the differences. In 1998, the AAUW released report entitled “Separated by Sex: A Critical Look at Single-Sex Education for Girls,” which revealed that there is no evidence in general that singlesex schools are better for girls than coeducation.

Not to be outdone, the 1990s saw a proliferation of studies on the social, psychological, and kinesthetic needs of boys. Books such as Michael Thompson’s “Raising Cain” and William Pollack‘s “Real Boys” make a strong case that school and societal demands are shortchanging boys and truly placing them at risk.

IGNORING THE OBVIOUS Much of the gender research of the past quarter century is flawed, inconclusive, and flies in the face of reality. For example, at the time of the AAUW publication stating that our schools were failing girls, most of the common indicators told a different story. Young women were well ahead of the male counterparts in graduation percentages, college acceptances, College Board scores, and enrollment in advanced placement courses. Young women far outnumbered young men in graduate and professional programs and females outnumbered males in honor societies and class valedictories. One glaring area of imbalance stood out at the time of the report: males were far ahead of females in both knowledge and use of technology. Female students have since closed the gap.

ONE SIZE DOES NOT FIT ALL What all of this has taught us is that males and females learn in a variety of environments. What is most important is that teachers recognize that one size does not fit all, that there are fundamental differences in learning styles, and that both boys and girls have some different needs at various stages of development. A first grade girl enjoys sitting looking at a picture book and sharing her impressions quietly with her neighbor; her male counterpart needs to walk about the room, run to the play area, and climb on the equipment. Today’s well-trained teachers recognize the needs of both and provide a healthy balance. Informed by the best of gender research, today’s teachers are able to address the various developmental needs of their students – male and female – and still keep them in the more natural coeducational setting. Girls and boys learning together, appreciating their differences, valuing their perspectives, and recognizing their relative strengths are well along the path to maturity and successful adjustment to the challenges of adulthood.

Hopefully, before the President or U.S. Secretary of Education Rod Paige puts forth another under-funded, poorly conceived, but overly hyped initiative, they will draw from the White House Slogan Hall of Fame and “Just Say No.”

Alumna Named First Female Lay Principal of Maryknoll High School

A

fter a lengthy search process, Maryknoll School President Michael Baker and the Board of Trustees announced the selection of Betsey Hughes Gunderson ’68 as the new high school principal in August 2002. Maryknoll’s first female lay principal, Betsey succeeds Andy Corcoran ’64, who departed Maryknoll in the summer of 2001.

Betsey brings to her new position nearly 30 years of experience in private schools. She began teaching at Maryknoll in 1974, where she taught for four years. She taught four years at St. Anthony Junior/Senior High School on Maui, and for 15 years at Sacred Hearts Academy. Betsey also taught at the college level as a graduate assistant at South Dakota State University.

She returned to Maryknoll in the fall of 2000, and most recently served as interim vice principal during the candidate search for a new principal.

Betsey graduated with distinction from the University of Hawaii at Manoa with a degree in liberal studies with a concentration in Hawaiian studies. She also holds a master of education degree in curriculum and instruction from South Dakota State University. She is the mother of Christine, Claire, Joanne, Jon-Erik ’02 and Jason ’05.

Amidst the whirlwind of activities that precede a new school year, Betsey took a few moments to share her thoughts on her new position.

When did you first envision yourself as the principal of Maryknoll High School?

“It took Evanson Chang [interim principal] asking me to be his interim vice-principal. He allowed me to work in partnership with him last year to lead the school. By May, when I was urged by peers to pursue this position, I could really envision the challenges of this job as something I would love to embrace.”

What will be your greatest responsibility and challenge as principal?

“I have a wonderful, dedicated and extremely talented staff. My greatest challenge will be to move us all forward together as we renew our commitment to what it means to be a Catholic Essential School.”

What does your being both an alum and a Maryknoll parent bring to your new position?

“It really gives me perspective! As an alum, I have a sense of our history and tradition. As a parent, I have a sense of the challenges that young people face today and how we are responding to those challenges.”

What is your greatest hope for Maryknoll School?

“My greatest hope is that we can create a caring community of lifelong learners who recognize that we all have a duty to each other and our world…[and] that we prepare all students who pass through our doors to be the best human beings they can be. It is not enough to only develop their minds – we must transform their hearts as well.”

What is it about your Maryknoll experience that keeps you here?

“The sense of family…a strong sense of belonging…the sense of duty.

“Much was given to me when it looked like, for financial reasons, I would have to change schools. [Vice principal] Sr. Joan Malherek structured a way with Sr. Katherine [Theiler, principal] to keep me at Maryknoll. I paid one-third of my tuition, my mom paid one-third; and I was gifted with the last third. To provide perspective: Though my proportion was about $100 per year, I babysat at 50 cents per hour to earn that money!

“Sister did not give me a simple handout. She knew that my education was my responsibility and it was up to me to make the best of this opportunity. Her compassion has never been forgotten!”

In the spirit of Noblesse Oblige, Betsey has a clear vision for her role in perpetuating the Maryknoll charism. This includes the charge to “walk the talk,” by making decisions and moving ahead with fundamental values firmly in place. Those values include, of course, the responsibility of giving back.

Based on the idea that “Maryknoll is not fully exclusive like other private schools,” Betsey believes that the school needs to embrace inclusiveness, serving those who have not only financial but also spiritual and behavioral challenges. This does not mean compromising Maryknoll’s standard of excellence, though she does believe that students can be held to high academic standards with compassion.

Betsey now follows in the footsteps of the Sisters who laid the foundation for the growth of Maryknoll School into an outstanding institution for Catholic education. Betsey hopes to model the Sisters’ approach to leadership by taking input from all constituencies and maintaining a sense of humor, while being “feminine at the same time.” She will also be guided by the “Golden Rule,” which for Betsey means, “Love the Lord and your neighbors with all your heart, soul and mind.”

It is an edict that will serve Betsey well as she continues to give back to Maryknoll School in her new role as high school principal.

“Nowhere Else I Would Rather Be”

D

olores Rosso was born on February 22, 1924 in Philadelphia, PA to “warm, loving parents Dan and Anne Brennan Rosso (I carry my Irish-Italian heritage proudly).” She is the oldest of five children: two brothers and two sisters, one of whom, Marie, is also a Maryknoll Sister. She was educated in Catholic schools, and always enjoyed learning and studying.

Dolores learned of the life and work of Maryknoll Sisters from reading Maryknoll magazine, named at that time The Field Afar. As a 6th grader, she was attracted to photos and stories of the Sisters visiting women and children in the alleyways and kitchens of rural China.

By 7th grade she had asked for her own subscription to the magazine and read each issue avidly. Activities and social events took priority in her life until after graduating from high school when, she says, “I began to realize God was truly calling me to be in mission as a Maryknoll Sister.”

After some work experience as a long-distance telephone operator and clerical worker at National Biscuit Co., Dolores entered the Maryknoll Sisters congregation in New York in September 1943.

Shortly after she was assigned to Teachers College and earned a bachelor of education degree (and in later years a masters of arts from University of Hawaii).

In September 1949, Dolores – now Sr. Ana Doloritas – was assigned to Hawaii and Maryknoll School. She describes her career as “a happy life for 33 years – 21 as a classroom teacher, then 11 years as executive director of the Alumni Association.”

Sr. Dolores blessed us with the following written reflection on her years at Maryknoll School.

discussion/conversations about life issues and values. While I may have opened doors for them in many areas of learning, they were the teachers as well. Besides classroom time, there were wonderful after school conversations with many of them. Along the way, for example, I was initiated into the problems with car mufflers and the comparative merits of current recording artists.

As faculty coordinator of assorted extracurricular activities, interscholastic speech events, socials, senior prom, class night, etc. I marveled at their creativity and talents. There “was nowhere else where I would rather be…” than right there doing what I was doing at that time with those Maryknollers.

When the opportunity was offered in 1971 to be executive secretary/director of a newly established Alumni Office on campus, I welcomed the invitation to be its anchor. It was during those next 11 years that I saw the Maryknoll School family spirit as a lived reality.

The members of the Alumni Board, chiefly grads of the early years, were completely and tirelessly dedicated to forming a strong Alumni Association by providing a variety of events to attract and welcome alums, as well as a newsletter to maintain communication with them.

Their enthusiasm for their goal was inspiring.

At the Alumni Office, former students frequently dropped by to say hello. In a matter of minutes we were in conversations about what had been happening in life since their graduation. It was a privileged time for me as they shared their accomplishments and disappointments, often reminding me what they remembered about their school years. They asked about their Sister teachers. There was a feeling they felt at home.

One aspect of my work with the Alumni Association brought another kind of delight. No matter the event – a fundraiser, banquet, class reunion – when Knollers met Knollers there were lots of hugs, laughter (hilarity!), “talk story” and general good feelings. Spouses were embraced as part of the family. Friends cared about renewing friendships. Many classes often invited former teachers to class reunions. I was always energized by those times.

Having been given the distinct honor of being an Honorary Alumni member with membership on the Alumni Council, I feel a strong desire to encourage Maryknollers to keep in touch and become involved. The younger Alumni Council members and committee chairs have an enthusiasm and generosity reflecting Noblesse Oblige; they truly care about providing meaningful and entertaining events for all Maryknoll grads. They are talented and committed, evidently having caught the family spirit of their school years expressed in service.

Quality education is a realized goal of the school curriculum today.

Also, the present administration of the school is dedicated to keeping alive the spirit given to the school in 1927 by the founding Maryknoll Sisters. This is commendable and heartwarming to all Maryknoll Sisters. During this 75th anniversary year, the Maryknoll spirit has been at its best and most creative with their careful, professional planning and enthusiasm for communicating the Maryknoll image to the larger community.

■ Sr. Dolores is currently the regional archivist for the Maryknoll Sisters in Hawaii, and has been requested to write their history. She also serves as a member of the Maryknoll School Alumni Council and a member of Maryknoll School’s 75th Anniversary Steering Committee.

December 3, 1982: Sr. Dolores at her “aloha party” before leaving the islands to work at the Maryknoll Sisters Center in Ossining, NY. What started out as a small gathering of classmates who wanted to wish Sr. Dolores well turned into a party of 200 alumni in Rogers Hall. Sister recalls fondly, “They even took up a collection for my winter clothes!”

Sr. Dolores received the Honorary Alumni Award from Maryknoll’s Alumni Association at the 1979 awards banquet. Pictured with her are Fred Lum ’44 and Ted Candia ’46 who were on the original Board of Directors when the Alumni Association was officially organized in 1971.

OUR STORY

“How It Came To Be”

O

n the First Friday of September, 1927 the City of Honolulu docked.

Aboard for Punahou were Sister Veronica, Mission and House Superior, Sister Berchmans, Sister Immaculata, Sister Matthias, Sister Robert and Sister Tarsicius. Father Kress, Brother Philip, his Boy Scouts and some of the parishioners were there with the traditional flower leis and warm Hawaiian aloha. They went directly to Mass and Holy Communion. One of the Sisters wrote to Mother, “We thanked God from the bottom of our hearts for having called us to make Him better known in this lovely land.”

The Sisters’ dormitory was the stage of the parish hall where they found six unmade beds. The kitchenette at the opposite end of the hall became the convent kitchen. Bachelot Hall itself was cut in half by a beaver board partition, one half being used as a combination refectory and community room and the other half as a recreation room. This was supposedly a temporary arrangement but one that lasted for three years.

That first day all the Sisters were invited to St. Ann’s. In contrast, the convent there was like a little doll house, perfect in every detail.

The ladies had even put fancy scarves on the dressers. The parishioners gave a luau for all the Sisters who enjoyed eating everything except the ice cream with their fingers.

When the Punahou group returned to Bachelot Hall, their trunks had arrived (along with that of a visiting actor’s!). They made their beds and asked the Lord to bless their rest that they might be better able to serve Him. Thus ended the first historic day.

Mother Mary Joseph wrote of her night on the stage when she passed through on December 12, 1928:

The Honolulu group is still living in the hall and I had the thrill of sleeping on the stage. It was an odd sensation to look up at the rafters through rolls of scenery, wondering just where you find yourself if the curtain fell.

Trials such as these did not daunt our pioneers. Four days after arrival they opened the first Maryknoll school in the Territory of Hawaii. It was a one story frame building containing four classrooms along one side of which was a spacious lanai. At the end of the building was the name, MARYKNOLL SCHOOL and under it the quotation, “Wisdom hath built herself a home.”

One of the Sisters wrote, “We have a nice school, but no desks, a rather difficult problem to keep the children in order…. We are all happy though because we are having a real missionary beginning.”

On Sunday, September 12, 1927 the school building was blessed

by Bishop Alencastre. A procession of school children marched from the school for Benediction of the Most Blessed Sacrament. The seed had been sown…

SISTER BERCHMANS REMEMBERS… “The school buildings one story cottages had just been finished. The floors newly varnished and bare of any furnishings or supplies of any kind. Monday each Sister registered her own class and Tuesday school began. The registration was as follows – The Sister set up a card table or some small borrowed table. The children sat on the floor. Sister Immaculata had First Grade. Father Kress helped her as the children were so small and numerous.

“After the first sobs and howls had subsided it was discovered that the children had stuck to the still new varnish on the floors and had to be pried loose!”

Alumni Celebrate 50+ Years Since Graduation from Maryknoll School

M

aryknoll’s 2002 jubilarians – alumni celebrating 50 or more years since their graduation – were invited back to campus for commencement events.

Seventeen alumni from the classes of 1937, 1942, 1947, and 1952 attended Baccalaureate Mass on June 6 at Sacred Heart Church. Afterward they enjoyed a delicious buffet lunch under a white canopy on the “Old Convent Lawn” alongside the Administration Building. Lunch was hosted by school president Michael Baker, who spoke to the alumni about Maryknoll’s recent accomplishments and future plans.

The following night, jubilarians were given reserved seating and special recognition at Maryknoll’s commencement exercises at Blaisdell Concert Hall.

Jubilarian festivities are a wonderful way for classmates to reunite for a special celebration of their graduation anniversary, and for the graudating seniors to honor those who came before them. We look forward to seeing the James McPalmer ’47 jubilarians from the classes of 1938, 1943, 1948, and 1953 at their celebration in 2003.

New this year at the high school is an updated, standardized dress code, which gives students several uniform options. They include uniform shorts or pants in khaki or navy; white polo, aloha or camp style shirts with the Maryknoll logo; or a maroon polo shirt. A surprising result of the new dress code is the increased popularity of the pleated blue skirt, which has always been a part of the dress code but was not often worn when jeans were an option for the girls.

Grade School Campus Gets a Summer Makeover

W

hen school opened on August 26, it was business as usual at the grade school campus – but with an updated look and different feel. Students returned to renovated classrooms and air-conditioned buildings, with little outward evidence of the massive work that began immediately after the closing of school in June.

The major part of the work was the installation of a thermal ice storage air-conditioning system that cools the three grade school buildings. (Connections are provided so that Sacred Heart Church will eventually be able to tap into the system to air-condition the church, Bachelot Hall, and the rectory.) Classrooms were enclosed, and the interiors remodeled to update the learning environment.

The foundation and structure of Building A (closest to Alexander Street) was enhanced to correct structural deficiencies and prevent future failures. The building was also strengthened to carry the load of the major components of the new air-conditioning system, including the chillers, cooling towers, and associated pumps.

Four electrical feeders that serviced the grade school campus were consolidated into one main feeder off of Alexander Street, and a new fire alarm system was installed.

The interior and exterior of Building A were repainted.

The new exterior color scheme was selected to better blend in with the colors of the historic church buildings.

Repainting of the remaining school buildings is planned for the future.

The chiller is lowered onto the roof of Building A.

A pit approximately 35 feet deep was dug in front of the Knoll Building to accommodate the thermal ice storage unit. The entire system is energy and cost efficient because the water is chilled to “slush” overnight, during off-peak hours. This is used during the day to cool the water that runs through the system to air-condition all three grade school buildings.

Maryknoll School Board of Trustees Welcomes New Member

C

ori Ching Weston is Senior Vice President, Counsel and Corporate Secretary at Bank of Hawaii. She is responsible for corporate governance, legal and regulatory compliance and stock plan administration.

Prior to joining Bank of Hawaii in 1991, Cori was a partner at Foley Maehara Judge Nip & Chang in Honolulu, and before that a senior associate at Garrity Fiztpatrick Graham Hawkins & Favetta in Bloomfield, NY. She is a co-founder and past director of the Hawaii Financial Regulatory and Compliance Association. She serves on the YWCA Board of Directors, is a director and past chair of the Domestic Violence Clearinghouse and Legal Hotline, and is a member of the Metropolitan Rotary Club of Honolulu.

Cori is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame, where she earned a B.A. with high honors in English and American Studies, and a J.D. from the University of Notre Dame Law School.

She is married to Jeff Weston, a U.S. Marshall, and has two daughters, Ashley and Taylor.

Alumni Establish a New Scholarship for Maryknoll Students

B

ecause of the generosity of Class of 1963 alumni Galen Ho and Patricia Ching Ho, a new scholarship opportunity is available to students at Maryknoll School. The partial-tuition scholarship will be awarded annually to a student with financial need who is of good academic standing and has demonstrated leadership and service to the community.

The Ho-Ching Scholar for 2002-2003 is Thomas Downes ’05, this year a sophomore at Maryknoll School. The son of Patrick and Cathryn Downes, Thomas is an A student who is active in student government, holds a part-time job and volunteers off-campus. He envisions himself someday attending Stanford University and pursuing a degree in law, or majoring in art. Either way, he says, he plans to minor in business so that he can start his own firm or business.

Having set a long-term academic goal has already had an impact not only on Thomas himself, but also on his school community. After learning that Stanford hosts a summer session (four intensive weeks of political study and debate) as part of the Junior State of America (JSA) program, Thomas and a classmate started a JSA chapter at Maryknoll.

“I plan to take my Maryknoll education as far as it will take me,” says Thomas. “I believe that there is no limit to what I or anybody else can do as long as they are committed, hard workers.”

Thomas is on his way to accomplishing his dreams, thanks in part to the Ho-Ching Scholarship. Galen and Patricia chose to endow a scholarship because they felt that the best way to ensure the continued growth and development of youth was to invest in education.

Said Galen, “Education is one of the foundation pillars of our society. If you really think about our future, we have to pay attention to 14

promoting, cultivating the youth of America. And the scholarship is obviously a very good way of focusing on not so much gifted students, but students you know are motivated to contribute to society, make it a better world.”

Patricia added, “We felt a debt to Maryknoll. We always have been imbued with the necessity for volunteer work, giving back to whichever community you live in something of yourself. And in this case since Maryknoll really provided us with a fine high school education and a sense of rooting to our Honolulu community. We wanted to do that for someone in the school.”

Galen is president of BAE Systems Information & Electronic Systems Integration Sector. Patricia has taught for many years in public schools. The Ho-Ching Scholarship is named in honor Galen’s parents and Patricia’s parents, who made unwavering commitments to the education of their children.

Dear Fellow Alumni, Mahalo and congratulations for another highly successful year!

As we begin our 4th year of the renewed Alumni Association, I can proudly state that your Maryknoll Alumni Association is achieving its stated mission and vision.

The mission is “to establish an alumni association, with a solid program, that actively participates in, and contributes to the success of Maryknoll School and members of the association.”

The vision is “to establish the Maryknoll Alumni Association as a recognized premier alumni organization in Hawaii, contributing to the success of Maryknoll School and members of the association.”

After only three years, your Alumni Association has a strong and dynamic program supporting Maryknoll School in many ways, including financial assistance. With a growing number of alumni participating in the association, the 3rd Annual Alumni Week was an overwhelming success. Participation in the FORE! Maryknoll Golf Tournament was again sold out. The annual alumni social – this year the Alumni Dinner – was the best ever, with many classes celebrating class reunions and a dynamic program featuring our deserving alumni.

I’m also proud to announce that each year, for the last three years, alumni support of AIM (Annual Investment in Maryknoll) has increased. This year our annual giving contribution was close to $80,000. Mahalo!

Based on your enthusiastic support and the rapid growth of the association, our reputation as a premier association is spreading among the schools in Hawaii. On a couple of occasions, Lori Kern Carlos ’87 (Alumni Association secretary and Maryknoll’s alumni relations coordinator) has been invited to speak on the success of our association.

We have begun another year of exciting alumni events. Our Alumni Memorial Mass, this year on Saturday, November 2, is always a special, memorable event.

The 4th Annual Alumni Week will again feature three events with the family Bowlarama, the 12th Annual FORE! Maryknoll Golf Tournament, and the Alumni Dinner. Remember, the dinner is a perfect time to schedule class reunions – and the Alumni Week Committee and Development Office handle all the planning, accounting, and coordination.

I am thankful for your continued participation in the Alumni Association and for your enthusiastic support of Maryknoll School.

11th Annual Fore! Maryknoll Golf Tournament

M

ore than 50 teams took part in the 11th Annual FORE! Maryknoll Golf Tournament, held on Thursday, July 18, 2002 at New Ewa Beach Golf Club. The tournament, now in its third year as an Alumni Week highlight event, raised more than $20,000 for school programs.

At check-in, each golfer received a gift bag that included a golf shirt with Maryknoll’s special 75th anniversary logo. Team members snacked on teri burgers, then got into their golf carts for the shotgun start at noon.

On the course, roaming carts served spam musubi, ice cakes and beverages. Along the way, golfers stopped for refreshments at the Coca-Cola Cooler, the Penske Hot Dog Stand, and the Marians Catering “Chili To Go” tent.

Play finished in the early evening. Back at the clubhouse, golfers found great prizes at each place at the table. As they enjoyed a delicious buffet dinner, John Noland ’76 emceed the awards program.

Alumni Dinner

lumni Week 2002 came to a close with the Alumni Dinner on Saturday, July 20 at the Japanese Cultural Center in Honolulu. It was a spirited gathering of Maryknoll graduates that included eight reunion classes who made the event part of their reunion festivities.

The Class of 1952 Gathers for its 50th Reunion R E U N I O N AT T E N D E E S

The Class of 1952 celebrated their 50th reunion on four different days in July.

On Thursday, July 18, they met for coffee and dessert at the Yum Yum Tree and closed the place having so much fun.

Saturday, July 20, those who attended the Alumni Week Dinner were honored with pins commemorating Maryknoll’s 75th anniversary and the 50th reunion of the class.

On Sunday, July 21, thirty-five graduates and their spouses partied at a luncheon at the Hale Koa Hotel.

On Tuesday the 23rd, a farewell luncheon was held at Buffet 100.

On each of the occasions, no one wanted to leave…so they are planning to meet again in 2003.

“The Gathering Call” of the Class of 1957

by Edmund Young ’57 The Class of 1957 celebrated its 45th reunion in Portland, OR last summer. They enjoyed a tour of Washington Park Rose Test Garden, Columbia Gorge and Bonneville Dam. They had curbside bleachers seats to view Portland’s Grand Floral Parade. They attended Mass at

the Grotto (the National Sanctuary of Our Sorrowful Mother). They shared meals – and, most importantly, their lives – for several days, and had a glorious time. Following are excerpts from Edmund Young’s reflections on their gathering.

REUNION It was a clan meeting called to meet at Portland, Oregon during June 6th – 9th, 2002. They came by airplane. They came by motor vehicles of all descriptions. They came with the express purpose of answering the gathering call of the graduating class of 1957.

THE HOSPITALITY ROOM – HOLIDAY INN ROOM #531 In my mind, the Hospitality Room is the place to be at. Not a sour note on Winnie Thomas’s ukulele or David Kaili’s voice (accompanying Winnie) to be heard; not a discordant “Banzai” was experienced there. It was pure fun, easy relaxation, and a place to laugh, experience good cheer, and share some reminiscing in fine company.

Thanks to Manny Medeiros and his lovely wife, Darlena we had great company as well as cases and cases of liquid refreshments for all to enjoy compliments of the Medeiros Corporation.

Eddie [Pfeiffer] spent more than 15 hours smoking many of the salmon he caught with his own two hands. [He] smoked several chicken too! His contributions filled an entire Catholic-family-sized ice chest. I saw plates of rice floating past me as people made a beeline for the smoked goodies piled high at the banquet table behind the roses and Lionel Iseri’s favorite chair.

Thank goodness for the helpful hands at the end of each evening who tidied up the Hospitality Room. Gordon Tom, Jeanette [Salado] and Jack Martin as well as Sadie [Mau Lew and her husband] were “regulars” each evening at clean up time…. The hotel staff was so impressed with the tidiness of our hospitality room and the cleanup efforts that were expended each and every night. Thanks, gang!

TRANSFORMING THE ORDINARY Having dinner is a simple concept. Yet, transfer that idea to the

Windows Restaurant on the sixth floor of the Holiday Inn with this elegant group and you have a magical setting accented with floating bouquets of balloons at each table, Sadie Lew sharing her talents and gifts of a luggage identification tag made of Hawaiian printed fabric, Velma Young giving away those shiny, beautiful, kukui nut leis (and kisses to boot) while Lorraine Maeda placed maroon and gold fabric leis on the necks of classmates, spouses, as well as guests and entertainers. Patricia Ho found the time and resources to provide school pins for each and every classmate. CDs of 1950s music found their way into the hands of all.

Winnie Thomas graced us with her singing. Thanks to Margeaux Cooper Pearson, we were able to have dancing, 1950s style at the conclusion of our evening. Many of the couples have not lost their dancing skills as evidenced by the smooth demonstrations on the dance floor. Where were the nuns with the rulers to measure the dress hems, and priests to push the gentlemen onto the dance arena?

UNTIL WE MEET AGAIN For three and a half days I was in seventh heaven, with a marvelous group of individuals who knew the secret to group dynamics, mass fun, cooperative energies, and that special love the Hawaiians refer to as the Aloha Spirit. It was the most heartwarming experience that I have ever enjoyed.

Class of 1967: Still Strong after 35 Years

“To Dream the Impossible Dream” (our grad song) has endured for us for 35 years! In honor of this momentous occasion we enjoyed a week of festivities beginning on Friday, July 19, with a “three-hour tour” to “Gilligan’s Island” aka Coconut Island. Leonard Gollob captained us across Kaneohe Bay aboard his African Queen (real name). This was a real treat since few are invited to the research facility. Twenty-four of us ate, drank and caught up until the wee hours.

Just the right amount of unplanned excitement was added when we ran aground on the return voyage. Luckily, careful maneuvering by several hardy reef-walking classmates saw us safely on our way.

Another adventure was added to the legend of the Class of ’67!

Tying our banquet in with the annual Maryknoll Alumni Class Dinner on Saturday was a great success! Willa Gaud Papandrew created beautiful favors and centerpieces for our tables. Not only did we enjoy the company of Knollers from other classes, but an added bonus was visiting with one of our favorite teachers, Mr. Allan Yuen ’46. He taught many different courses but our best memories are of his typing class. With no stress and no homework to worry about, we learned a skill that we, as computer users today, are so grateful for.

Sunday morning found 21 of us at a sumptuous brunch at the Outrigger Canoe Club that we repeated on August 11 for those who couldn’t make the prior activities. After the first brunch, several of us 28

went on to attend classmate Didi Lum Ah Yo’s medical fundraiser at Aloha Tower Marketplace. Didi wasn’t well enough to participate in any reunion activities, but she’s holding her own in her battle against leukemia.

Although we started planning later than we should have, with the help of the Alumni Office this became one of the best reunions we have ever had! By taking care of the money and planning the banquet, the Alumni Office made everything so easy for us.

A special mahalo to our class agent Linda Niemitz Langley for nudging us along and to the other core planning committee members for creating such a memorable event: Barbara Chun Chong, Leonard Gollob, Pat Muneno McIntyre, Willa Gaud Papandrew, Lionel Tejada, Eric and Gail Nakagaki Tiwanak.

For those of you contemplating attending your class reunion, my advice to you is…DON’T MISS OUT! I did not attend previous reunions simply because “I wasn’t ready to go.” But after the passing of classmate Jeff Kanalz and the September 11th terrorist attacks, I realized that I might not be here for the next reunion. With that in mind, I decided to join of the committee with Lisa Wong Gruebner and Monica “Nikki” Siu Brissette.

Our reunion was held on the weekend of July 20-21, 2002. The event began with a cocktail party on Saturday at the Honolulu Country Club in Salt Lake. Beach Marriott Resort. Clearly, the four hours allotted was not enough since many of us continued the party at a karaoke bar.

Family Day was held the next morning at the Waialae Ridgeline Recreation Center. This gave us an opportunity to meet our classmates’ children. The day was filled with activities (games, crafts and prizes) for the children and many of the alumni continued to catch up with events in each other’s lives.

What took a year to plan quickly ended in two days. A special thank you to Lisa and Nikki, Richard and Sandy Kishaba, Howard Komine, Alfredo Garma, Dean Horikami (Honolulu Country Club) and the Alumni Office for helping us make our reunion a success!

So remember, go to your reunion! And to my classmates, I hope to see all of you at the next one!

Class of 1958: Mark your calendars now to join the celebration of your 45th reunion, September 4 – 7, 2003. Tentative plans include a dinner cruise and show in Waikiki on Thursday; a party at the Vickerys on Friday; an old-fashioned luau at the Mundons in Kaneohe on Saturday; and a picnic at the Vickerys on Sunday. Darlaine Mahealani Dudoit, founder and editor of ‘Oiwi: A Native Hawaiian Journal, passed away unexpectedly last summer, shortly before the release of the journal’s second edition. Born and raised in Hawaii, Mahealani traveled extensively and wrote both prose and poetry. Her work was published in many journals, including Manoa, Hawai’i Review and Southwest Review. Her essays appear in two Bamboo Ridge Publications, “Sister Stew” and “Growing Up Local.” She was a past winner of the Academy of American Poets Award, the Intro Prize from the Association of Writing Programs, and a place on the USA Today All-USA College Academic First Team. In 1999, Mahealani won the Hawaii Literary Arts Council’s Elliott Cades Award for Literature. Private services were held for Mahealani on August 30, 2002. Our deepest sympathy to Mahealani’s family, including her siblings: Samuel ’70, Dori ’74, Doreen ’76, Deanna ’78, and Steven ’90.

Diana Tong Pruner’s daughter Meagan Jacqueline Pruner (1) is “happy and healthy and an absolute joy to us.”…Tino Sellitto lives in Boston, MA and works for Putnam Investments as a senior portfolio manager on their small cap growth fund. His son Antonio is four years old…Jill Matsuda Matro graduated from the University of HawaiiManoa’s speech pathology program, earning her B.S. in December 2000, then started her masters degree in speech pathology shortly thereafter. Says Jill, “Had the pleasure of working on a research project with Anne Horner ’82! It was wonderful to get to know Anne after all these years. That project took a long time to complete so we spent many hours together laughing and working. We are great friends today. I am enjoying being a wife and mom of four, finishing my masters in social work, and running a home business.”…Valerie Loo Domingo has a two-year-old son named Anthony…Yvette Flair Elledge is “living in Oregon and loving the change of seasons.” She has a two-year-old son named Donovan. Yvette and her husband Gregory attended Maryknoll’s alumni gathering in Portland last spring and enjoyed visiting with other alum who are Hawaii transplants. She’s looking forward to her the Class of 1983’s 20th reunion next year…Raymond “Nick” Choy left Nike and has been at InFocus Corporation for the past two-and-a-half years. He is a graphic designer/project manager in corporate marketing. This fall, he began part-time graduate work toward an MBA in marketing/branding. Nick is also an E-6 (tech sergeant) in the Air National Guard and has been in the military now for almost 14 years.

He works one weekend a month as a video producer/director and photographer. Nick and his wife Michelle celebrated their 10th wedding anniversary in July.

This past October, Kevin Boehning

married his “best friend” Amy, who is a U.S. World and AP History teacher at Waialua High School. They were married at Sacred Heart Church. (Family at the wedding included Kevin’s sister Alyce Boehning Crain ’85, who recently moved home to Hawaii with her husband Aaron and their two sons, Alex ’16 and Adam.) Kevin is currently a field supervisor and the senior tractortrailer (“BIG RIG!”) driver for Perma-Fix Government Services, a company that transports hazardous waste from the military bases. He’s still playing drums, now for a band called Steeltoe (formally known as Bigtoe but, he says, “I’ve reinforced the band!”), which is working on recording a CD. Tony Mizuno is the chief operating officer for The Certified Group, which specializes in apparel, uniforms and promotional products. His company is the supplier of several of the new uniform items now worn at the high school. Tony and his wife Yuko have a daughter, Hannah (4).

Graphic artist Valentino Valdez created this unique wedding invitation for his marriage to Katrina Souza in June 2002. If creativity is any indication, we’re sure that these two have a huge hit on their hands!

Danny Padello has relocated for a year to Washington, D.C. where he is working at the National Guard Bureau as the Joint Readiness Training Center (JRTC) Logistics Officer for Hawaii. Wife Lisa Nakasato Padello ’92 and daughter Keisha (8) are holding down the fort at home in Hawaii, but plan to visit as often as Danny’s busy travel schedule allows.

Sheri-Lynn Goo Rand ’85 married attorney Richard M. Rand on June 15, 2002. Sheri-Lynn is pursuing a law degree from Concord Law School. She and her family live in Honolulu.

Pedric Arrisgado visited Honolulu in August and stopped by the Alumni Office to share the scoop on his life. He’s in his last year of law school at Seattle University and works in the Pierce County prosecutor’s office. (He quipped, “It’s a great experience.

Thank God for prisons!”) Pedric will graduate in May 2003 and take the Washington bar exam the following July. He misses home, though, and plans to take the Hawaii bar in February 2004. His goal is to work in the Honolulu Prosecutor’s Office with his father, Maurice Arrisgado.

Congratulations to Jenny Matsumoto who graduated in May from Creighton University with a Doctor of Pharmacy degree. While at Creighton, she was on the Dean’s List for all semesters and was inducted into the Rho Chi Pharmacy National Honor Society. Since graudation, she passed the pharmacy boards and was granted her license by the State of Hawaii.

CLASS NOTES Nick has been doing the tour in Japan and will be back in November to celebrate his sister’s birthday in Las Vegas. Then, he says, “I get to surf the whole winter on the North

Shore with my friends, but I’ll be back in Japan as early as April, which is when the tour begins.” Nick has been training with Maryknoll faculty member Vernal Lilly at the gym and says, “Vern has got me on a program which can do nothing but push myself in the water. He’s been a great help!”

Megan Hanifin was named to the Dean’s List in the College of Arts & Sciences at the University of Washington in spring 2002.

She will graduate from UW in the spring of 2003. Class of 1999…Run, don’t walk, to

your nearest music store and pick up the CD “Rise Up,” a new release by the group “Uprising.” Group member Cade Santos wrote four songs on the CD and sings the title song, plus the hit “No More Hurry.”

Will the musical wonders coming out of Maryknoll never cease? Congratulations, Cade!

Krystal Lee was awarded a 2002-2003 college scholarship from the Chinese Women’s Club of Honolulu, her third such award from that organization. Krystal is a computer science major at the University of Hawaii-Manoa…Robyn Kurasaki continues to make a name for herself as a volleyball standout at St. John’s in New York. A team co-captain, Robyn has started every game in her three-year career there, and appears on the cover of the Red Storm’s media guide.

Class of 1985 Grad Gives From the Heart

O

n June 18, Kai Chang ’85 received the American Heart Association’s 2002 Guy Matsuguma Award, which is presented annually to the AHA volunteer who makes the greatest contribution to the promotion of CPR training in the community.

Kai is a CPR instructor for the AHA of Hawaii, and a member of its Operation Heartbeat Committee.

During the year, he volunteered to train people at the AHA’s free “CPR mass training” events at the Sheraton Waikiki Hotel and in downtown Honolulu.

He also helped move and set up equipment for both those events. Kai supported the AHA’s new CPR In Schools program by training students at Leilehua High School. The vision that is Maryknoll School began with a young priest and six Maryknoll sisters more than seventy years ago. When Maryknoll School was blessed in 1927, there were 93 boys and 77 girls. Now the student body has expanded to over a thousand students on both campuses.
