2025 NOBLESSE OBLIGE AWARD HONOREES: BOB AND LORI HARRISON
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Aloha Maryknoll Community,
The publication of this year’s Knoller marks another chapter in the proud and enduring legacy of Maryknoll School. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Fr. EJ Ikaika Resinto for his six years of dedicated leadership as our Pastor and we warmly welcome Fr. Ese‘ese “Ace” Tui as the new Pastor of Sacred Heart Church and Maryknoll School.
As we look ahead to our historic 100th anniversary on September 6, 2027, we reflect on nearly a century of educating generations of children, guiding their growth, and shaping individuals grounded in a strong moral compass and the spirit of Noblesse Oblige. Faith, Academics, and Community remain the pillars upon which we continue to build.
The completion of Bachelot Hall provided students, parishioners, and families with a dedicated gathering space for performances, events, and fellowship—an enduring testament to progress and community spirit. This year, we have placed significant focus on modernizing our facilities in alignment with our Master and Strategic Plan. The fresh coat of paint on our buildings and the driveway improvements at our high school campus are tangible signs of Maryknoll’s steadfast commitment to providing a safe, beautiful, and pride-filled environment for our students and families.
Continuing the vision of the Maryknoll Sisters, our students are encouraged to see the world beyond themselves. This year, our elementary students traveled to Fuxiao, our partner school in Beijing, while high school students explored Hainan, China. Our ongoing partnerships with Akifuchu High School in Hiroshima and Naragakuen in Nara foster rich cultural exchanges in Japan. Additionally, middle school students have the opportunity to earn high school credit in world languages—Spanish, Mandarin, and Japanese—setting them on a path of global awareness and communication.
Our Dr. Rosita Leong Mandarin Immersion Program celebrates its ninth year since welcoming its first cohort, while the expansion of Japanese language offerings in grades K–5 and the introduction of middle school world language and culture courses further enrich our students’ global learning experiences.
Partnerships with Hawai‘i Pacific University and the University of Hawai‘i Early College Program continue to offer our high school students firsthand experience with college-level coursework and the opportunity to earn valuable college credits before graduation.
As we celebrate our 98th year, we remain dedicated to weaving together tradition and innovation, always guided by the enduring pillars of Faith, Academics, and Community.
Mahalo for being an essential part of our Maryknoll ‘ohana and for your continued support in the spirit of Noblesse Oblige. You are the difference in carrying forward the Maryknoll spirit into our next century.
With sincere appreciation,
SHANA TONG ’83 President, Maryknoll School
Most people know me as Father Ace Tui, but my full name is Ese‘ese Tui. I was born and raised in the beautiful village of Faga‘alu on the island of American Samoa—the same village with the only hospital on the island, so you could say I came into the world right in the heart of things!
Faith was woven into my life early on, thanks to my mom, Miriama Aumaivao-Tui. She became Catholic after marrying my dad, the late Siamani Kelemete Tui. I’m the oldest of five—three younger brothers and one sister, who’s the youngest and often the boss of us all.
Our family life revolved around the Church. I remember coming home from school, hearing the usual: “Finish your homework, do your chores, then go check if anything’s happening at church.” That’s just how we were raised. Being the eldest, I was often given leadership responsibilities, especially alongside my dad. He taught me everything, from how to speak confidently to how to honor our Samoan culture.
I played football at Samoana High School and was deeply involved in parish life—youth group, altar serving, reading at Mass, and of course, singing in the choir. In Samoa, if you’re not in the choir, are you even Samoan?
People always ask, “When did you know you wanted to be a priest?” My call came during one of the hardest moments of my life. When my dad passed away, it felt like my world collapsed. But that same evening, our parish priest, Fr. Setefano Tuisea, came to pray with us. Then he came back the next day, and again the day after. His gentle presence, compassion, and prayer became a light in the middle of my grief. I realized then—priests don’t just work on Sundays. They walk with us, especially in the hardest times. That’s when I felt God tugging at my heart.
I told my mom I wanted to become a priest, but she said, “Son, taste the world first. I want you to be sure.” At the time, I didn’t like that answer—but she was right. I worked for six years in American Samoa with a nonprofit teaching computer skills and later moved to Hawai‘i at age 23. I managed a care facility in Ewa Beach with The Arc in Hawai‘i, serving adults with developmental disabilities. Those years taught me how to serve with patience and joy.
Eventually, God opened the door. I went to Mount Angel Seminary in Oregon, then to St. Patrick’s Seminary in Menlo Park, California. I was ordained a deacon in 2020 (yes, mid-COVID!) and became a priest in 2021— on the same day Fr. Damien was ordained years before.
I spent my first four years of priesthood at St. Anthony Church and School in Wailuku, Maui. Now I’m honored to serve as pastor here at Sacred Heart Church and Maryknoll School. I grew up in a family that loved God, community, and culture. I pray that during my time here, we grow together in faith, joy, and aloha.
Aloha Maryknoll ‘Ohana! ‘O Darlani Gaspar ko‘u inoa. Ua hānau ‘ia au ma ka mokupuni ‘o O‘ahu a hānai ‘ia au ma ke ahupua‘a o Waikele, Honouliuli, a me Palolo. My name is Darlani Gaspar and I am deeply honored to join the Maryknoll School community as the new Middle School Dean. Born on the island of O‘ahu and raised in the ahupua‘a of Waipahu, ‘Ewa Beach, and Kaimukī, I carry with me the values, traditions, and spirit of our island home. It is with great joy and enthusiasm that I begin this new journey alongside our families and our incredible students.
As we welcome a new school year filled with possibility and growth, I want to express how excited I am to support your children as they continue developing not just academically, but also spiritually, emotionally, and socially. Middle school is a critical time in a child’s life, a time of curiosity, self-discovery, and transformation. I believe strongly in building an environment where students feel safe, seen, and supported as they learn and grow into the young leaders they are meant to be.
Catholic education holds a very special place in my life and in my family’s story. I was blessed to attend Catholic schools throughout my entire academic journey, beginning in kindergarten at Saint Joseph School and continuing through high school at Sacred Hearts Academy. My parents, Peter and Darlene Nazarino, prioritized raising my brother Darwin and me in the Catholic faith and ensuring that we received a values-based education grounded in service, compassion, and excellence.
Catholic schooling is truly a family tradition in our ‘ohana. We proudly represent four generations of Catholic school education. Over the decades, my great-granduncle, father, brother, daughter, son, nephews, nieces, and cousins have walked the halls of Saint Louis School, Sacred Hearts Academy, and Maryknoll School. These experiences have shaped who we are and continue to influence how we show up in our communities, with empathy, faith, and a commitment to making a difference.
Maryknoll’s mission to educate hearts and minds while nurturing compassionate servant leaders resonates deeply with me. I am fully committed to upholding this mission in our middle school program. Together with our dedicated faculty and staff, I will strive to cultivate a welcoming and vibrant environment where students are encouraged to take risks, build resilience, and develop a strong sense of purpose rooted in faith and service.
On behalf of our entire middle school team, thank you for entrusting us with your children. We are truly grateful for the opportunity to partner with you during this pivotal time in their lives. Whether you have questions, concerns, or simply want to connect, please know that I am always here to support you. Communication and collaboration are key and I look forward to building meaningful relationships with all of you throughout the year.
Please join us in giving Darlani a heartfelt and warm Spartan welcome as she steps into her new role. We are truly blessed to have her with us!
On July 1st, I proudly stepped into the role of High School Dean at Maryknoll School, a position that feels like a natural continuation of my decades of service and leadership within our Spartan community. For me, Maryknoll isn’t just where I work; it has always been home.
As a true Maryknoll lifer, I’ve worn many hats throughout my journey here. After graduating in 1990, I earned my Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education from the University of Dayton and later a Master of Arts in Administration, Curriculum & Instruction from Gonzaga University. In 1995, I returned to my alma mater as a High School Social Studies teacher, spending ten wonderful years inspiring students before stepping into administration.
From 2005 to 2012, I served as High School Vice Principal, bringing balance, humor, and thoughtful leadership to the role. In 2012, I was asked to serve as Interim High School Principal and was later officially selected as High School Principal, where I had the privilege of serving until 2016. Afterward, I continued to help shape Maryknoll’s academic programs as Director of Scheduling and Registrar for K–12, which eventually evolved into my role as Director of Student Support Services. There, I worked to ensure every student had the guidance and resources needed to thrive.
Now, as High School Dean, I bring back not only my experience but also my deep love for Maryknoll to the high school leadership team. My devotion to Maryknoll extends far beyond the classroom and office. Together with my husband, Jon, I am the proud parent of three Spartans: Alyssa ’19 and twins Reece and Wyatt ’26. Whether I’m cheering my sons on the crosscountry course or track, leading Key Club and Kiwanis Club, or pitching in with just about every student activity imaginable, I feel grateful to remain an active and joyful part of our students’ lives.
My journey has been one of full-circle commitment, from student to teacher, from administrator to parent, and now, once again, leading our high school. For me, Maryknoll is not just a workplace; it is my family, my calling, and a community I’ve been blessed to help nurture for nearly three decades.
As I step into this new role as High School Dean, I remain committed to living the spirit of Noblesse Oblige: “To whom much is given, much is expected.” And in true Spartan fashion, I will continue to give my all to Maryknoll.
In Loving Memory of Lucile Smith '37 Mistysyn: Mrs. Maryknoll
LUCILE SMITH '37 MISTYSYN (1920-2025)
WRITTEN BY BUDD LAUER AND CHASEN ST. ONGE ‘09
THE HEART AND SOUL OF MARYKNOLL SCHOOL
Last year, we had the privilege of sharing the remarkable life story of a woman who truly embodied the spirit and values of Maryknoll School, Mrs. Lucile Smith '37 Mistysyn, lovingly known as “Mrs. Maryknoll.” It is with profound sorrow that we share the news of her passing on June 4, 2025, at the age of 105. While her physical presence is no longer with us, Lucile’s spirit, legacy, and impact will forever echo through the halls of Maryknoll School and the lives she touched across generations.
Lucile was not simply part of Maryknoll School’s story; she was our story. Her life paralleled the growth and evolution of Maryknoll and her legacy is woven into the very fabric of the school community. From the moment she stepped onto campus as a young student in 1932 to her final days as a lifelong supporter and friend of the school, Lucile embodied the Maryknoll values of faith, service, compassion, and dedication.
A LIFE OF FIRSTS AND FOREVERS
Lucile’s journey with Maryknoll began in 1932, just five years after the school’s founding. She entered as an eighth grader and graduated in 1937 as a proud member of Maryknoll’s third graduating class. At a time when the school itself was still laying its foundations, Lucile was already laying the groundwork for a lifetime of service and support. Her experience as a student would serve as the foundation for a relationship with Maryknoll that lasted more than 90 years, one defined by extraordinary generosity, unwavering commitment, and deep personal faith.
She carried her Maryknoll education with pride and purpose. After graduation, Lucile furthered her studies at Sullivan’s Commercial School, graduating in 1939 with business skills that would serve her throughout her professional life. She went on to work at Liberty House, moving from the basement
to the main office, a testament to her diligence, capability, and work ethic.
Even in her early years, Lucile demonstrated a heart for service and community. She volunteered with the Maryknoll Girl Scouts, helped at school lū‘aus, and gave her time to booth activities, all small gestures that grew into a lifelong pattern of selfless giving.
A DEVOTED FAMILY WOMAN
Lucile’s life took a new turn at a Sodality Dance, a USO event for Holy Name members from Fort Shafter, where she met her future husband, Michael. The two were married on January 22, 1944, at Sacred Heart Church in Honolulu. Their marriage blossomed into a beautiful family life centered around faith, love, and education.
Lucile and Michael raised their children with the same values she had learned at Maryknoll. Committed to providing them with a strong
academic and spiritual foundation, she enrolled them at Maryknoll School. Even then, her involvement extended beyond being a parent. Lucile was a constant presence on campus, volunteering in classrooms, assisting with school functions, and even reorganizing the alumni association to foster stronger connections among past graduates.
Michael passed away in 1991, but Lucile’s resilience and strength carried her forward. Her family remained central to her life and she continued to live out her commitment to service and education well into her later years. Even after she sold her home, she moved to Arcadia, which is directly behind the High School campus. Lucile would frequently watch From her window, Lucile would often watch and listen to the students on campus. She would say, “it helped her stay connected to the students today”.
HONORING A LIFETIME OF DEVOTION
In one of the most memorable and meaningful events in Maryknoll School’s history, Lucile was honored on October 19, 2024, during the Noblesse Oblige Dinner. It was a momentous occasion recognizing her nine decades of unwavering support as a student, volunteer, advocate, and lifelong ambassador for the school.
That evening, she was presented with the inaugural Maryknoll School Lifetime Achievement Award, an award created to honor those whose lifelong service and dedication have significantly impacted the Maryknoll community. In a heartfelt and emotional announcement, the school shared that the award would henceforth be named the Lucile Mistysyn Lifetime Achievement Award, ensuring that her name and legacy would continue to inspire generations to come.
Lucile accepted the honor with humility and grace, surrounded by family, alumni, faculty, and friends who had been touched by her love and generosity. Her presence at the dinner reminded everyone in the room of what it truly means to live a life rooted in faith, service, and community.
A LEGACY OF GIVING
Lucile’s giving spirit never wavered. She served wherever she was needed, answering phones at the front office, helping organize alumni events, and supporting countless school programs. But perhaps her most enduring gift was the Lucile Mistysyn Endowed Scholarship, established in 2020. The scholarship supports students who embody the values Lucile cherished— dedication, compassion, and the desire to serve others. The first student to receive the Lucile Mistysyn Endowed Scholarship Fund was Shawn Alexander Ching ‘26, who is the 2025 Noblesse Oblige Scholarship recipient.
This fund is more than financial aid; it is a symbol of Lucile’s belief in the transformative power of a Maryknoll education. Her contributions have directly impacted the lives of students who might not otherwise have had the opportunity to attend Maryknoll—a reflection of her deep commitment to equity and access.
Lucile was also a proud member of the Noblesse Oblige Society, a group of generous benefactors who have committed to ensuring Maryknoll’s continued success for future generations. Her vision for the school never stopped at the present— she always looked toward the future, planting seeds of hope and opportunity for tomorrow’s students.
A BEACON OF THE MARYKNOLL MISSION
Lucile’s life stands as a powerful embodiment of the Maryknoll mission: to educate students to become thoughtful, compassionate leaders inspired to serve others. Her story reminds us that one person— through quiet acts of love, steady commitment, and unwavering faith— can change the course of many lives.
In many ways, Lucile was the living heart of Maryknoll School. Her life spanned eras, touched thousands of lives, and served as a model for how to lead with humility, kindness, and purpose. She witnessed the school grow from a small campus to a thriving educational institution and never once wavered in her support or love for its mission.
Lucile's impact extended beyond campus and into the broader community. She helped model what it means to be a servant leader, especially in today’s fast-paced,
digitally driven world. At a time when so much attention is drawn to screens and distractions, Lucile reminded us of the beauty of human connection, community service, and the power of showing up for others.
FOREVER "MRS. MARYKNOLL"
Lucile Smith '37 Mistysyn was more than an alumna. She was a pillar. A guidepost. A living legacy. Her life reminds us that our purpose is not only found in what we do, but in the lives we touch and the communities we build.
To our alumni who were fortunate enough to know her, Lucile leaves behind warm memories, wise advice, and countless examples of kindness. To those newer to Maryknoll, who may not have had the opportunity to meet her, we share her story not as a history lesson—but as an invitation to follow in her footsteps.
Maryknoll School is stronger
because of Lucile. Our community is richer because of her presence. And our future is brighter because of the seeds she planted.
Though we mourn her passing, we also celebrate a life that continues to inspire. Lucile’s name will forever grace our campus through the Lucile Mistysyn Lifetime Achievement Award and the scholarship fund that bears her name. But perhaps the greatest tribute we can offer is to live as she did—with hearts open to service, minds committed to learning, and spirits grounded in faith.
Mrs. Maryknoll, we will miss you dearly. But we know your legacy lives on, in every student who walks these halls, in every alum who gives back, and in every act of kindness inspired by your example.
Thank you, Lucile, for showing us what it truly means to live a life of purpose, service, and love. You will always be remembered as Mrs. Maryknoll.
Big Dreams, Big Hearts
MARYKNOLL LAUNCHES SPIRIT SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM FOR 8TH GRADE CATHOLIC SCHOOL STUDENTS
It all started with a late-night thought, a spark of inspiration that struck Marissa Bratton, Director of Enrollment Management, somewhere between cooking dinner and caring for her children. “How do we attract amazing students from our Catholic school ‘ohana to choose Maryknoll for high school?” she wondered. By sunrise, the idea had already grown roots, and just a few months later, it blossomed into something truly special: The Maurice & Joanna Sullivan Family FoundationMaryknoll Spirit Scholarship
Launching in the 2025–2026 school year, this exciting initiative is set to ease the financial burden for students and families making the leap
from middle school to private high school. With generous funding from the Maurice and Joanna Sullivan Family Foundation , the scholarship will support two students from each of O‘ahu’s nine K–8 Catholic schools, providing $5,000 in tuition aid per student per year.
That’s right: not just once, but every year from grades 9 through 12. Do the math (we triple-checked), that’s $20,000 per student for those who stay all four years at Maryknoll High School.
Cue the happy tears.
But this isn’t just about dollars and cents. It’s about opening doors. It’s about saying to a bright, motivated eighth grader, “We see you. We believe
WRITTEN BY BUDD LAUER
in you. And we want you here.”
In collaboration with the Presidents and Principals of these nine Catholic schools, Maryknoll will help identify two deserving students per campus who exemplify character, commitment, and a whole lot of heart. That adds up to potentially 18 students each year who will now have a clearer, more affordable path to a Maryknoll education, an education grounded in academic excellence, moral development, and community values.
Participating schools include:
• Holy Family Catholic Academy
• Mary, Star of the Sea School
• Our Lady of Good Counsel School
• Saint Anthony School
• Saint Elizabeth School
• Saint John Vianney School
• Saint Joseph Parish School
• Saint Patrick School
• Saint Theresa School
With a combined enrollment of 2,143 students as of 2023, the potential impact is immense.
And here’s the best part: the Maryknoll Spirit Scholarship isn’t meant to stand alone. It can be stacked with other financial aid, merit awards, and scholarships, giving families the flexibility and support they need to make the best decision for their child’s future.
It’s not every day that a late-night idea becomes a legacy. But thanks to Marissa Bratton’s vision and the unwavering support of the Sullivan Family Foundation, Maryknoll’s spirit is stronger than ever.
Marissa didn’t stop at just creating the Maryknoll Spirit Scholarship—oh no, she had something even more special in mind! She wanted to throw a heartfelt celebration for not just the students, but also the proud parents, supportive educators, and dedicated administrators who help make dreams come true. On March 12, 2025, Maryknoll School rolled out the red carpet in the newly renovated Bachelot Hall for a sparkling
scholarship dinner.
Despite their jam-packed schedules filled with schoolwork, extracurriculars, and service activities, all 18 Maryknoll Spirit Scholarship recipients made it to the event, talk about commitment! But the night wasn’t just about honoring the students. Families were applauded, school leaders were thanked, and the room was filled with pride and gratitude.
President Shana Campos '83 Tong took to the podium with a warm message about the power of Catholic education and its impact as students continue into high school. Then came the show-stopping speech by beloved high school teacher Wyatt Lay, who brought both laughs and a few happy tears as he congratulated the recipients and shared his excitement about seeing many of them at Maryknoll High School in the near future.
It was an evening full of spirit, sparkle, and sincere celebration, exactly what Marissa had hoped for.
Once the confetti had settled and the applause faded, six amazing students officially said “yes!” to Maryknoll School, proudly joining the Class of 2029 as recipients of the Maurice & Joanna Sullivan Family Foundation – Maryknoll
Spirit Scholarship. And who was the first to cheer them on? None other than Marissa herself, who beamed, “Welcome home, Spartans! We can’t wait to see all the incredible things you’ll do here at Maryknoll!”
But the excitement doesn’t stop there! The Maryknoll Spirit Scholarship isn’t just a one-time celebration; it’s a tradition in the making. This scholarship will return each year to support the next wave of bright 8th grade graduates from the nine K–8 Catholic schools, continuing the mission of lifting up students with heart, faith, and Spartan pride!
A big, heartfelt mahalo to the Maurice & Joanna Sullivan Family Foundation for their incredible, transformative gift to the Maryknoll Spirit Scholarship! Their generosity isn’t just changing lives, it’s opening doors, fueling dreams, and paving the way for six bright new Spartans to continue their journey as proud members of the Class of 2029. Because of their support, these students aren’t just receiving an education, they’re gaining a home, a community, and a future filled with promise.
So, here’s to the dreamers, the doers, and the students who are about to discover just how far a little spirit (and a whole lot of scholarships) can take them.

FATHER ESEESE “ACE” TUI INSTALLED AS PASTOR
For the past 20 years, Sacred Heart Church – Punahou and Maryknoll School have been graced with the care, wisdom, and aloha of two amazing spiritual leaders. Father Gordian “Gordy” Carvalho, who brought heart, humor, and steady guidance to our community from December 1, 2006, to December 31, 2018. His leadership was key during the building of our beloved Maryknoll Community Center—he truly helped lay the foundation, both literally and spiritually!
Most recently, we had the dynamic and dedicated Father EJ Ikaika Resinto, who took the baton on January 1, 2019, and ran with it until June 30, 2025. With his kind heart and steady presence, Father EJ shepherded us through another

milestone: the exciting renovation of Bachelot Hall, helping breathe new life and performances into a space we all cherish.
Now, cue the celebration, because a new chapter is here!
As of July 1, we are thrilled to welcome Father Ese‘ese “Ace” Tui as our new Pastor! Officially installed on August 16, 2025, Father Ace comes to us full of warmth, energy, and aloha. With his joyful spirit and fresh perspective, we know he’ll be a blessing to the Maryknoll ‘ohana.
Here’s to continuing the journey—faithfully, joyfully, and always together—with Father Ace at our side!
The Quiet Force Behind Maryknoll’s Big Leaps
REMEMBERING ALFRED M.K. “AL” WONG
If you’ve ever walked through Maryknoll’s vibrant campus— cheering at a basketball game in the Maryknoll Community Center or admiring our recently renovated Bachelot Hall—you’ve likely felt the impact of Al Wong, even if you didn’t know it.
For more than 40 years, Al and his wife, Laureen "Laurie" Hong '56 Wong,
played a behind-the-scenes role in transforming Maryknoll School. They didn’t do it for attention, applause, or a plaque on the wall (although there is a court named after Al). They did it because they believed in the power of Catholic education—and they believed in Maryknoll.
Alongside his dear friend Dr. Thomas Kosasa, Al co-chaired not

one but two of the largest capital campaigns in Maryknoll’s history, helping to raise more than $20 million to bring the Maryknoll Community Center and the renovated Bachelot Hall to life. These two projects have since become the beating heart of our campus; spaces filled with student laughter, learning, and legacy. And yet, Al never sought the spotlight. His style
Living the Vision
THE MARYKNOLL SISTERS’ MISSION IN HAWAI‘I
At the heart of the Maryknoll Sisters’ work is a shared vision, one that transcends all creations. This vision, shaped and affirmed during the Congregation’s 17th General Assembly in 2014, continues to guide every step of their journey.
OUR VISION
We, the Maryknoll Sisters, envision One Earth Community where the co-creative energy of Divine Love flows freely, nurturing the wholeness of being in an expanding and evolving universe.
OUR MISSION
For over a century, the Maryknoll Sisters have embraced God’s mission, nurtured by the spirit of our founder, Mother Mary Joseph. In this era of global awareness and rapid change, we are called to reflect on our evolving understanding of our charism and respond to the needs of our time. Recognizing that we are One Earth Community, we see our mission as “wholemaking”, building connections through partnership, collaboration, and networking, especially in service to those living on the margins of society.
From immigration advocacy to prison outreach, from storytelling to sacred art, the Maryknoll Sisters in Hawai‘i embody the Congregation’s vision of a world united by love and compassion. Through their ministries, they weave connections across cultures and generations, living proof that the Maryknoll mission continues
to flourish in ever-changing times.

2025 Noblesse Oblige Award Honorees
BOB AND LORI HARRISON
WRITTEN BY CHRISTINA SOUZA
The Noblesse Oblige Award & Scholarship Dinner celebrates the enduring spirit of Maryknoll School’s guiding motto: Noblesse Oblige – to whom much is given, much is expected. This annual event reflects our commitment to honoring individuals who exemplify a life of Noblesse Oblige, including distinguished community members recognized with the Noblesse Oblige Award for Service and one graduating senior awarded the Noblesse Oblige Scholarship.
BOB AND LORI HARRISON HAVE DEDICATED THEIR LIVES TO SERVICE, LEADERSHIP AND COMMUNITY.
For Bob Harrison, the path to a fulfilling life and career began with a strong sense of duty and a desire to serve. After graduating from high school, he worked in construction in Arizona, then taught SCUBA diving before enlisting in the U.S. Navy with plans of becoming a commercial diver. Instead, he served in a shipboard foundry at Pearl Harbor, pouring molten metal into molds to create parts for Navy ships. Since his ship required to stay at Pearl Harbor, he was able to join a canoe club and competed in two regatta seasons and the Moloka‘i to O‘ahu race, experiences that deepened his connection to Hawai‘i.
Following his service, Bob enrolled at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa, initially choosing chemistry as his major. Though he later switched to math, it was that first semester in chemistry lab that proved life changing. He met Lori Kam, and the rest is history.
Their journey together has been one of education and service. After two years at UH Mānoa, Bob transferred to UCLA to complete his degree, while Lori pursued nursing at Mount Saint Mary’s. They both graduated and married shortly after. Bob then earned his MBA from Cornell, while Lori began her nursing
career in Ithaca. They later moved to New York City, where Bob joined Chase Manhattan Bank and Lori completed her master’s in nursing at University of Pennsylvania.
In 1990, they returned to Hawai‘i to give back to the community that had shaped them. Bob joined First Hawaiian Bank in 1996, where he built a respected career rooted in service and integrity. He has served on the boards of Aloha Harvest, the Hawai‘i Bankers Association, the Hawai‘i Business Roundtable, the Hawai‘i Community Foundation, and the Foundation for Maryknoll School, among others.
Lori made her own remarkable impact on Hawai‘i over a 33-year career caring for tens of thousands of women as a nurse practitioner in women’s health at Kaiser Permanente. Her compassion extended well beyond the clinic. She has served on the board of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) and chaired its annual walk for five years. She also served on the AfterSchool All-Stars Board, demonstrating her lifelong dedication to improving lives through both healthcare and education.
Together, Bob and Lori Harrison have built a legacy defined by service, leadership, and a deep love for Hawai‘i. From a Navy foundry to hospital rooms and boardrooms, their journey is a powerful reminder of what’s possible when lives are guided by purpose and a commitment to making a difference.

Maryknoll School: From 1927 to 2025
A HISTORY OF MARYKNOLL SCHOOL
On September 2, 1927, the Maryknoll Sisters from New York arrived in Honolulu aboard the liner City of Honolulu, carrying with them a mission of education and service. Just four days later, Maryknoll Grade School opened its doors to 170 eager students in grades one through six.
From 1927 to 1930, the Sisters lived humbly in Bachelot Hall—sleeping on cots on the stage, preparing meals in a small kitchenette, and even holding classes in makeshift spaces, including a tiny room beneath the hall. That changed when the Dowsett property was gifted to the Sisters for their convent.
The school quickly grew. In 1931, Maryknoll welcomed its first freshman class, with enrollment reaching 399 students. Two years later, the first edition of the Chi Rho Knoller —forerunner to today’s Knoller —was published. By 1934, Sisters Mildred, Bertran, and Emily had established the first Catholic Girl Scout troop in Hawai‘i, leading the girls by train to Camp Haleopua in Pearl City.
The late 1930s also saw the launch of student government and the last graduating class to wear the original middy blouse uniform—ushering in a new look for the 1940s.
History took a dramatic turn on December 7, 1941, when the attack on Pearl Harbor thrust the U.S. into World War II. The U.S. Army Engineers commandeered five classrooms, forcing Maryknoll to operate on double shifts for the remainder of the school year. In 1947, Father George C. Powers acquired the historic McDonald Hotel property on Punahou Street, and by 1948, 300 high school students had moved to the new campus.
In 1935, Maryknoll became accredited by Catholic University, and thirteen pioneering graduates from the only co-educational Catholic high school in Hawai‘i received their diplomas. Two years later, the school celebrated its 10th anniversary with 630 students across Kindergarten through 12th grade, taught by 21 Maryknoll Sisters. That same year, a new school building rose on Dole Street, dedicated in November 1937.
Maryknoll’s Army ROTC program began in 1950 and was formally recognized in 1954. In 1952, the school’s Silver Anniversary year, the territorial government claimed more than half of the high school property to build the H-1 Lunalilo Freeway. Undeterred, the school was rebuilt, and on August 30, 1953, the Maryknoll High School was blessed.
In 1960, the Civil Air Patrol replaced the ROTC, with Maryknoll’s drill team earning “Best in Competition” honors at the Aloha Week Parade. Athletic excellence soon followed. In 1976, both the boys’ and girls’ varsity basketball teams captured ILH Division I State Championships. The boys went on to win in 1981, 1982, 1984, 1985, and 1986, while the girls added titles in 1977 and 1978.
The late 1970s and early 1980s also marked new leadership milestones—Jared Kaufmann became the first lay high school principal in 1977, and Jim Gahler became the first lay grade school principal in 1981. By 1995, Maryknoll had joined the Coalition of Essential Schools, and in 1997, Mike Baker became the first lay president, serving until 2007.
Perry Martin assumed the presidency in 2008, guiding the school for 12 years. Under his leadership, the Clarence T.C. Ching Maryknoll Community Center opened in September 2009. That same year began an era of baseball dominance, with HHSAA Division II State Championships in 2009, 2013, 2014, and 2015. The boys’ basketball team captured back-to-back state titles in 2019 and 2020, with hopes for a three-peat dashed only by the COVID-19 cancellation of the 2021 season.
In 2020, alumna Shana Campos '83 Tong became interim president and later the school’s current president. New athletic milestones continued, Maryknoll’s Lady Spartans claimed their first-ever Division I State Softball title in 2022, and in 2024, the girls’ basketball team won their first championship since 1978, earning the Division II crown.
That same year, a symbol of the school’s enduring spirit came full circle: Bachelot Hall, where it all began, reopened in August 2024 after a $6 million renovation.
As Maryknoll School approaches its 100th anniversary in 2027, the community stands poised to celebrate a century of faith, learning, service, and achievement. Plans are already underway for a year-long commemoration that will honor the vision of the Maryknoll Sisters, the dedication of generations of faculty and staff, the accomplishments of countless alumni, and the bright promise of future Spartans. It will be a milestone not only in the school’s history, but in Hawai‘i’s educational and spiritual legacy.
Maryknoll’s Big Leap
A DECADE-LONG DREAM BECOMES A PARKING REALITY
WRITTEN BY CORI WESTON, BOARD CHAIRMAN, FOUNDATION FOR MARYKNOLL SCHOOL
If you've ever circled the neighborhood during basketball season or arrived early—yet still too late—for the last open spot at Alumni lū‘au, you know one thing about Maryknoll School all too well: parking is a prized commodity.
Well, get ready to do a happy dance in your car seats, because we’ve got exciting news to share!
Over the past decade, the Foundation for Maryknoll School has been quietly and thoughtfully assembling pieces of a larger vision—acquiring strategic properties between Dole Street and Clark Street. Like a giant game of real estate Tetris, each new lot was a carefully chosen step toward solving one of the school’s longest-standing challenges: parking.
And in November 2023, the final puzzle piece clicked into place. With the Foundation's acquisition of the last parcel, the entire block is now part of Maryknoll’s future. What comes next? A transformation that’s been years in the making.
PARKING RELIEF IS ON THE WAY…
In the Spring of 2026, construction will begin to replace the six current residential properties on that block with a brand-new parking lot featuring 80 standard stalls and 6 EV charging stations, a total game changer for our urban campus.
Let’s be honest, our charming location in the heart of Honolulu’s residential Makiki neighborhood is full of benefits, but abundant parking isn’t one of them. Between athletic games, school plays, community events, and the ever-popular Alumni Lū‘au (which had an all-time high of 450 attendees this year), the scramble for a spot is real. But that’s all about to change.
With construction expected to last about six months, the new parking area is set to open by September 2026, just in time for the new school year and fall sports season. Cue the horns and streamers!
A THOUGHTFUL APPROACH WITH OUR COMMUNITY IN MIND!
As exciting as this project is, Maryknoll has remained mindful of our neighbors every step of the way. In February 2025, President Shana Campos ‘83 Tong met with local residents and community members to present the plans and hear their feedback firsthand.
Several thoughtful concerns were raised, including:
• The removal of a beloved dog park, used daily by petloving residents
• Potential for increased traffic in an already busy area
• Additional lighting that could impact nearby residents, including those at the Tiare condominium
We listened, took notes, and got to work.
As a result, the final project includes a revamped and improved gated dog park that will continue to serve the neighborhood’s four-legged friends and their owners. We know dogs are family, too!
As part of the City & County of Honolulu’s permitting process, a comprehensive traffic analysis was conducted. It identified specific upgrades to help ease flow, including the installation of raised crosswalks and new signage to create safer and smoother traffic patterns in and around the area.
In addition, a 6-foot rock wall will border the new parking lot, helping preserve privacy for surrounding residences. Two secure entry gates will prevent overnight parking, and sensor-based, low-light LED fixtures will offer just enough illumination for safety without creating light pollution for neighbors. It’s a win-win design that respects the community while supporting school needs.
WHY THIS MATTERS
This project is more than just a convenience, it’s a critical upgrade that strengthens our ability to host events, run athletic programs, welcome families, and support our mission in a more accessible and practical way.
By alleviating street congestion, we’re not only improving the daily experience for Maryknoll families but also being good stewards of our neighborhood. More parking on campus means fewer cars lining the surrounding streets, and less stress for everyone trying to get to school, work, or the big game.
And let’s not forget those EV stalls! Maryknoll is committed to building a greener, more sustainable future, and those six EV chargers are just the beginning.
Maryknoll’s Master Plan in Motion
GOODBYE TO THE INFAMOUS DRIVEWAY SQUEEZE!
WRITTEN BY DAVID POORE
If you happened to stroll through campus this summer— or found yourself peeking through the construction fencing, you might have noticed some big changes happening on the High School side of Maryknoll School campus. That’s right, progress is paving the way (literally!) as part of our exciting
And this summer? We tackled a longtime legend. A
Yes, we’re talking about the driveway.
For the past 50 years—yes, five decades—parents, students, and teachers alike have shared the same experience: gripping the steering wheel just a little tighter while squeezing through that narrow one-lane driveway alongside the High School. With its infamous metal fence hugging the Arcadia side, drop-off and pick-up time could sometimes feel like navigating a real-life obstacle course.
Well, we heard you. And this summer, we got to work.
Construction crews came in to widen the driveway, giving cars more breathing room and improving traffic flow for daily commutes. But we didn’t stop there. That old metal fence that everyone knew (and maybe not-so-secretly disliked)? Gone. In its place stands a brand-new retaining wall designed to help prevent erosion, making the area safer and more stable for years to come.
To complement the new wall, we planted fresh greenery and native foliage along the edge, not just to make it look beautiful, but to also serve a practical purpose: even more
erosion control, naturally!
These changes might seem small on paper, but to anyone who has made the daily Maryknoll drive, they’re monumental. The smoother traffic flow, increased safety, and fresh aesthetic are already making a big difference in how families and faculty move through our campus each day.
But wait, there’s more!
This project is just the first step in an exciting series of upgrades planned through our Master Site Plan. Looking ahead to Summer 2026, we’ll be taking things to the next level, literally! We’re partnering with the talented team at HHF Planners Hawai‘i to give the front entrance of the High School a full, fresh makeover.
surface runoff away from building
While we’re keeping some of the details under wraps for now (gotta leave a little room for surprise!), we can say this: the entrance will be reimagined to reflect the spirit, pride, and future-focused vision of Maryknoll School. Think improved pedestrian access, better traffic flow, and a welcoming space that reflects the excellence happening inside our classrooms.
So, next time you pull into campus, take a moment to appreciate the extra room, the cleaner lines, and the flourishing greenery. It’s not just a driveway—it’s a sign of exciting things to come.
Thank you to all of our families, faculty, and supporters for your patience and enthusiasm as we continue building a better Maryknoll, one improvement at a time. Stay tuned— our next transformation is just around the corner!

CORI WESTON
Maryknoll School is proud to welcome Cori Weston as the new President of the Maryknoll School Foundation, effective July 1, 2025. A longtime supporter of Catholic education and a pillar of the Mavryknoll community, Cori brings decades of leadership, professional expertise, and heartfelt service to her new role.
Cori’s Maryknoll journey began in 2002, when she joined the Board of Directors, serving for 16 years until 2018. During her tenure, she served as Board Chair and led or contributed to several critical committees, including Board Governance, Board Affairs, and the Maryknoll Community Center Committee. She played a key role in updating board bylaws and articles of incorporation and was instrumental in launching the Maryknoll School Foundation, the very organization she now leads.
Since joining the Foundation’s Board of Directors in 2021, Cori has continued to advocate for philanthropy that supports the school’s mission of noblesse oblige—the idea that privilege brings responsibility. “Maryknoll’s mission is a calling for me,” she said. “I was blessed with a Catholic education at Notre Dame, both undergraduate and law school, which taught me the importance of nurturing mind, body, and spirit. Supporting our Maryknoll ‘ohana ensures students have a foundation to thrive academically, personally, and spiritually.”

The Power of Endowments
A LASTING LEGACY FOR MARYKNOLL SCHOOL
WRITTEN BY MONICA HAHN ‘84
As Maryknoll School continues its mission to educate future servant leaders rooted in faith, scholarship, and service, one of the most impactful ways our community ensures longterm success and access is through the establishment of endowments.
Endowments are permanent funds invested to generate annual income that supports student scholarships, programs, faculty development, and other vital needs. Unlike one-time donations, endowments offer lasting benefits—providing financial support year after year, generation after generation. They reflect a donor’s desire to make a difference not just today but far into the future.
In the 2024–2025 school year, Maryknoll School proudly welcomed five new endowments and scholarship funds that will begin providing critical student support in the 2025–2026 academic year. These generous and forward-thinking gifts exemplify the spirit of giving that defines our Maryknoll ‘ohana.
The Class of 1975 Endowment and the Class of 1968 Endowment
represent powerful examples of alumni unity and purpose. These milestone class gifts are a testament to the enduring bonds formed at Maryknoll and a commitment to uplifting future Spartans. Both classes have chosen to leave a legacy that will remove financial barriers and keep a Maryknoll education within reach for deserving students.
We are also honored to announce the establishment of the Lucile Mistysyn ’37 Endowment and the Douglas Ferreira ’63 Endowment. Both Lucile and Doug were deeply influenced by the core values instilled at Maryknoll—especially the principle of Noblesse Oblige: to whom much is given, much is expected. Guided by this belief, they chose to create lasting legacies that will provide future generations of Maryknoll students with access to the same academic, spiritual, and leadership formation that helped shape their own lives.
Rounding out this year's new funds is the Spirit Scholarship Fund, made possible through the generous support of the Maurice and Joanna Sullivan Family Foundation. This
scholarship is specifically designed for incoming 9th grade students from Catholic Diocesan K–8 schools on O‘ahu, reinforcing the continuum of Catholic education and providing a strong foundation for future success at Maryknoll.
Together, these five new funds reflect a powerful investment in our students, our school, and our shared future. They are more than financial instruments, they are acts of hope, love, and commitment to the generations to come.
We invite other alumni, families, and friends of Maryknoll to consider joining this legacy of impact. By establishing or contributing to an endowment, you help ensure that the gift of a Maryknoll education remains strong, vibrant, and accessible for decades to come. For more information about establishing a Scholarship or Endowment in honor of your graduating class or in your name, please contact Budd Lauer at (808) 952-7312 or budd.lauer@ maryknollschool.org
Aloha e Maryknoll Alumni ‘Ohana,
At Maryknoll School, our ‘ohana is the heart of who we are—and who we continue to become. The Alumni Office, uniquely housed within our Institutional Advancement team, exists to ensure that every alumnus and alumna feels welcomed, supported, and woven into the life of our dear alma mater.
This year, our vision is to holomua—to move forward together—with more intimate, meaningful gatherings where you can reconnect, share stories, and deepen your ties to Maryknoll. We have achieved so much in recent years, and now our goal is clear: to not only meet alumni needs, but to invite you back into the fold as active participants in shaping the future of our school community.
Our legacy is lived through the mo‘olelo—the stories—we share, and it is only fitting that we lead with Mrs. Maryknoll , an icon for our alumni. No matter where you are in life, Maryknoll remains a constant—a steady source of connection, pride, and legacy that will never change.
In the spirit of I maika‘i ke kalo i ka ‘oha The goodness of the taro is judged by the young plant it produces —we recognize that the strength of Maryknoll today reflects the lives and values of those who have come before. You are a living testament to our school’s mission and to our motto, noblesse oblige
If you would like to be part of our alumni initiatives or share your mana‘o, please reach out to me directly at chasen.stonge@ maryknollschool.org. Your voice and your presence matter. Together, we will honor our legacy while building a vibrant future—because once ‘ohana, always ‘ohana.
Me ka ha‘aha‘a,
CHASEN GIOVANNI ST. ONGE '09
Alumni and Mentorship Program Officer, Maryknoll School
Aloha, Maryknoll Spartan Alumni ‘Ohana,
Thank you for a year full of food, events, and reconnecting. I am very privileged to have spent the last 18 months sharing memories and creating new ones with everyone who has returned home to our Maryknoll.
While it may be true that the moment I got my diploma back in 1999, I became part of this Alumni Association, it wasn’t until Aunty Wendy Wong-Howell '73 asked me to “help out” that I really discovered the depth that is our Alumni Association. This journey as your interim president has given me the chance to see the way Spartans respond to a call for help. How we integrate Noblesse Oblige in our lives and for each other. I’ve continued to ask those of you who have always been around to help: please stay and thank you. And those who had/have not found your way back home to Maryknoll: please come and have a visit. I am continually overwhelmed by the outpouring of support and reconnection I have seen for myself, my family, and our school.
At our 2024 lū‘au and again at our lū‘au this year, I got the chance to see how wonderful a time is when Spartans gather. Chasen and the rest of us in the Alumni Council would love to see it continue to grow and thrive. Our goal continues to be to connect our alumni and help foster the legacy of Maryknoll. We have managed to approve our Alumni Association by-laws and will be voting soon for our new Alumni Council. We would love for you to join us; we would love to see you come home.
With warmest gratitude, DENBY (FUKUDA) RALL ’99 Alumni President, Maryknoll School
A Legacy of Vision and Aloha
THE NEW PATRICIA YOUNG LEE ’61 AND DR. WORLDSTER LEE ALUMNI AND HOSPITALITY ROOM
WRITTEN BY BUDD LAUER
After five decades of anticipation, Maryknoll School proudly opened the doors to its first on-campus gymnasium, the Maryknoll Community Center (MCC), on September 4, 2009. Now, 16 years later, the MCC continues to stand as a beacon of Spartan pride and unity. Over the years, its courts have echoed with the cheers and tears of victory and defeat, as generations of athletes and fans came together to witness the incredible journeys of Maryknoll’s athletic teams. From the heartbreak of narrow losses to the jubilant celebration of championship banners raised high, the MCC has been more than just a sports venue, it has been a home for memories, milestones, and the heart of Maryknoll School.
The MCC is a direct result of bold vision and determined leadership. We are forever grateful to former President Michael Baker, longtime supporter Al Wong, and Dr. Thomas Kosasa, whose tireless fundraising efforts over nearly a decade turned dreams into reality. Their commitment to the school and its mission set the foundation for what the MCC represents today, a gathering place for students, parents, alumni, and the greater Maryknoll ‘ohana.
Tucked away on the second floor of the MCC is a gem that has recently been given new life, the Alumni Hospitality Room. Originally designed as a space for Maryknoll alumni to gather for class reunions, intimate events, and moments of reconnection, the room has now undergone a stunning transformation. Thanks to the generous support and vision of Patricia Young Lee '61 and her husband, Dr. Worldster Lee, the
space has been fully renovated and thoughtfully redesigned to welcome the next generation of Spartans returning home.
Though still receiving finishing touches, the newly enhanced room was unveiled during the annual Alumni Luau on July 12, 2025. The classes of 1985 and 2005 had the special honor of hosting their milestone reunions in the revitalized space, filling the room with laughter, stories, and a deep sense of belonging. It was a fitting debut for a space created with love and purpose.
Now officially named the Patricia Young Lee ’61 and Dr. Worldster Lee Alumni and Hospitality Room , this multiuse facility opened for full alumni use on August 1, 2025. Beautifully arranged and comfortably accommodating up to 60 guests, the room is designed in a flexible dining room configuration and features a chef’s kitchen, projector screen, and space perfect for hosting special events, meetings, cooking demonstrations, kupuna luncheons, and so much more.
As we look ahead to Maryknoll’s centennial celebration in 2027, the Patricia Young Lee ’61 and Dr. Worldster Lee Alumni and Hospitality Room represents the spirit of continuity and community, where the past is honored, the present is celebrated, and the future is embraced with open arms.
Alumni Week ‘25
A Celebration of Legacy, Connection & Aloha
ALOHA SPARTAN ‘OHANA,
Our alumni are the heart of Maryknoll’s legacy, and during Alumni Week 2025, we came together to celebrate their extraordinary contributions in a week filled with connection, tradition, and aloha. From heartfelt gatherings to spirited competitions, it was a time to honor achievements and showcase the enduring power of our alumni network.
We began the week by weaving a tradition that has quickly become a beloved favorite—our Lei Making Day. Alumni, Maryknoll Community Alliance parents, and friends filled the room with laughter, stories, and the fragrance of fresh blooms, crafting beautiful lei to gift to every Lū‘au attendee.
Thanks to the generosity of our community, every guest left with a symbol of connection and aloha.
The second annual Alumni Volleyball Tournament brought high energy and plenty of friendly rivalry, while the ever-popular Jared Kaufmann ’58 Bowl-A-Rama filled the lanes with joyful competition and community spirit. The debut of our new Spartan Tavern speakeasy night gave alumni a brand-new way to connect, selling out in just one week and leaving guests buzzing with anticipation for its return.
The week concluded with the Alumni Lū‘au, a recordbreaking gathering that packed the gym with over 450 attendees and brought our Maryknoll ‘ohana together in a celebration of tradition, friendship, and aloha.
Mahalo to all who participated, volunteered, and sponsored events. This was a record-breaking year, and here is what happened during Alumni Week. Your presence and support keep the Maryknoll spirit alive for generations to come.
E KOMO MAI! A CELEBRATION OF TRADITION & REUNION
This year’s Maryknoll Alumni Lū‘au was nothing short of monumental—a true celebration of spirit, tradition, and the enduring bonds of our Spartan ‘ohana. For decades, the Lū‘au has been a cherished tradition, and in 2025, we honored our rich history while elevating the experience with enhanced spaces for connection, the return of beloved customs, and countless moments to “talk story” with classmates and friends.
The gym was alive with energy as about 450 attendees, representing milestone reunion classes ending in 5 and 0, packed the space, filling it with laughter, hugs, and the unmistakable feeling of coming home. Together, we reconnected, celebrated our shared journey, and embraced the flavors and cultural richness of a traditional Hawaiian lū‘au.
Guests enjoyed a Hawaiian feast prepared by Wil Cordes ’88 and Forty Niner Restaurant & Catering, while Hoku Zuttermeister filled the air with music and Kyle Roche ’18 kept the energy high with a photobooth and lively sounds. Dessert was a special treat from our president Denby Rall ’99 and her triplets, Dax, Donn, and Drake ’35 , adding a sweet touch of Spartan pride.
Class photos, reunion celebrations, and plenty of opportunities to “talk story” made the evening unforgettable. The warm and welcoming atmosphere was a testament to the dedication of Lū‘au Chair Royce Campbell ’07 and the incredible planning committee who poured their hearts into creating a night to remember.
From the Mass at Sacred Heart Church to the final song, the night was a living expression of our motto, noblesse oblige, to whom much is given, much is expected. This was more than just a reunion; it was a celebration of who we are, where we’ve been, and the legacy we continue to build together.
ALUMNI VOLLEYBALL TOURNAMENT
The Alumni Volleyball Tournament has quickly become one of Alumni Week’s most anticipated events, and this year it was bigger, louder, and more spirited than ever. Building on the momentum of last year’s one-day showdown, alumni teams returned to the court ready to bump, set, and spike their way to victory.
The gym echoed with cheers from classmates, families, and friends who packed the stands to support their favorite teams. Players of all ages—from recent graduates to seasoned alumni—showed off their skills, proving that Spartan pride never fades.
More than just a competition, the tournament was a true celebration of camaraderie. Between matches, alumni caught up on old times, shared memories from their days on the court, and created new ones. The friendly rivalry brought plenty of laughs, a few dramatic rallies, and no shortage of high-fives.
In the end, the tournament wasn’t just about who took home bragging rights—it was about bringing our ‘ohana together in the spirit of teamwork, tradition, and friendly competition. With the energy and excitement still buzzing, it’s clear this event has cemented itself as a cornerstone of Alumni Week for years to come.
THE SPARTAN TAVERN – A NEW ALUMNI TRADITION IS BORN
This year, Alumni Week introduced something entirely new, The Spartan Tavern , an intimate, speakeasy-inspired gathering that marked the first rebrand of our beloved Spartan Pau Hana. From the moment tickets went on sale, excitement was palpable. In just one week, every seat was claimed, making it our first sold-out event in Alumni Week.
What made The Spartan Tavern even more remarkable was that it was the first event fully planned, branded, and organized by alumni themselves. This collaboration brought together a dream team of Spartan-owned businesses, Hale Momona, Special Delivery Hawaii, Cece Sweets, and Kaimana Creations 808 , who transformed the evening into a refined yet nostalgic experience that set a new bar for alumni gatherings.
Guests followed discreet instructions to find the hidden entrance, knock three times, and give the password, “It’s a little bit Whiskey” before stepping inside. What awaited them was a warm, low-lit room filled with curated spirits, gourmet fare, and the hum of good conversation.
The whiskey menu was a highlight, featuring Ardbeg “Spectacular”, Glenmorangie “The Cadboll Estate” 15 Year, and Gordon & MacPhail 15 Year, alongside a $5 tastings bar where guests could explore and share their own bottles. Dinner by Hale Momona paired perfectly with the evening’s selections, prime rib bathed in Talisker 10-year whisky, garlic roasted potatoes, and a mushroom balsamic medley, rounded out with charcuterie and an indulgent dessert flight by Cece Sweets.
The night wasn’t just about fine spirits and elevated dining; it was about connection. Alumni mingled, shared stories, and created a sense of camaraderie that felt like it had been aging for years.
With its sold-out success, The Spartan Tavern has already established itself as more than an event, it’s the beginning of a new Maryknoll tradition. A place “where legends gather, and stories age well.”
MARYKNOLL ALUMNI & MARYKNOLL COMMUNITY ALLIANCE LEI MAKING
Lei making is one of Maryknoll’s most cherished Alumni Week traditions—a time to gather, create, and share aloha. We make lei to celebrate our Maryknoll community, to honor the tradition of giving and receiving aloha, and to symbolize our collective growth and connection. Each flower in a lei represents a member of our ‘ohana, and together we form something beautiful and enduring, just like the community we share.
This year, over 50 alumni, parents, and friends joined us from 3:00 PM to 8:00 PM in an evening filled with laughter, conversation, and the fragrant scent of fresh flowers. By the end of the night, we had crafted more than 250 lei , each one a gift of love and connection to be presented to attendees at the Alumni Lū‘au.
As alumna Mailani Makainai '98 so beautifully said, “You are each a budding flower that is the lei of Maryknoll.” It is a sentiment that captures the spirit of the evening and of Alumni Week itself. Thread by thread, flower by flower, we are reminded of our school motto, noblesse oblige, to whom much is given, much is expected. Through this act of giving, we pass on our aloha, ensuring it continues to grow in the hearts of our Maryknoll family.

In Memoriam: Brother Venard F. Ruane, M.M.
(1927–2025)
Brother Venard F. Ruane, M.M., passed away on February 11, 2025, at the age of 97, after serving as a Maryknoll Brother for 76 years. Born Thomas Francis Ruane in Waterloo, Iowa, on April 4, 1927, he was one of eight children. After graduating from Sacred Heart High School in 1944, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps in Guam and China, where encounters with missionaries inspired his vocation. He entered Maryknoll in 1947, taking his First Oath the following year and choosing the name Brother Venard.
In 1952, Brother Venard was assigned to the Hawai‘i Region , beginning a remarkable 18-year ministry at Sacred Heart Parish and Maryknoll Schools in Honolulu . His service was as varied as it was impactful, opening and closing the church daily, teaching catechism, serving as Boy Scout Master, driving the school bus, and working for nine years as Maryknoll High School’s first Athletic Director. He became
a familiar and beloved figure on campus, known for his welcoming spirit, quick humor, and ability to remember every student’s name and story.
Even after later assignments in New York and California, Brother Venard returned to Honolulu multiple times, continuing to serve as bookkeeper, financial officer, and Eucharistic Minister at Shriners Hospital for Children. For decades, his presence was a fixture at Sacred Heart and Maryknoll—so much so that one parishioner called him “the campus memory.”
In 2007, he was inducted into the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem. He celebrated his 75th Jubilee as a Maryknoll Brother in 2023, surrounded by the ‘ohana he served so faithfully.
Brother Venard’s legacy will always be part of Maryknoll’s story, woven into its classrooms, traditions, and the countless lives he touched with faith, kindness, and aloha.

ART, SPAMPLIFIED: ALUMNA BRITNEY
ASAO '09 ON CREATIVITY, COMMUNITY, AND THE TEACHERS WHO LIT THE SPARK
WRITTEN BY CHASEN ST. ONGE '09
When I sat down with alumna Britney Asao '09—now Manager, Marketing Partnerships Creative, at The Walt Disney Studios—one theme rose above the impressive résumé lines: gratitude. Yes, her work powers large-scale campaigns with real visibility. But the story she wanted to tell most was about the people who helped her get there—family who cheered and teachers who noticed a spark and fanned it into a flame.
“I am always honored to work on these large-scale projects that reach so many people. It’s a dream come true to see my work have that kind of visibility,” Britney shared. “But none of it would have been possible without the support of my family and teachers, who nurtured my love of art throughout my life.”
For Britney, two Maryknoll mentors were pivotal. She speaks first, and tenderly, of the late Mr. Bradley Koki '71, whose encouragement did more than validate a talented student—it set her direction. He urged her to study graphic design in college, a nudge that became a compass point. That advice, delivered at the right moment, put her on the path she walks today.
The second was Mr. Chris Coats, who recognized not just aptitude but dedication. Seeing how Britney lived and breathed the work “even outside the classroom,” he invited her to serve as an unofficial teaching assistant (TA) in Graphic Arts. That trust did what great teaching so often does: it converted potential into practice. Britney learned to articulate design
choices, support peers, and take responsibility for the craft— skills that translate directly to creative leadership.
“The late Mr. Koki was the one who first encouraged me to study graphic design in college, which ended up putting me on the path to where I am today,” Britney said. “And Mr. Coats was the one who gave me the opportunity to be an unofficial TA for the Graphic Arts class because he knew my passion and dedication for the material, even outside the classroom.”
Today, Britney’s role sits at the intersection of creativity, partnership, and impact. It’s a place where ideas must be both beautiful and strategic—where visuals tell a story partners can rally behind and audiences can feel. That dual fluency— artistic excellence tethered to purpose—is exactly what her Maryknoll experience cultivated.
“I’ll always be thankful for my time at Maryknoll because
it’s where I was given the encouragement to pursue my creative passions, which eventually turned into the career I have today.”

Class Reunions 2026
LET’S CELEBRATE TOGETHER!
Calling all Spartans from classes ending in 6 and 1—2026 is your year! We can’t wait to celebrate your milestone reunions next June during Alumni Week 2026. It’s the perfect opportunity to reconnect, reminisce, and create new memories with your classmates.
PLAN EARLY – SPACE IS LIMITED
If you’re thinking of hosting your reunion at Maryknoll, book your space as soon as possible to ensure you have your preferred venue. Many classes choose to tie their celebration into one of our Alumni Week events—making it easier for classmates to gather and enjoy the Spartan ‘Ohana spirit.
KEYS TO A SUCCESSFUL REUNION
Over the years, we’ve learned what makes reunions truly special:
1. Appoint a Point Person Assign someone to manage class emails and address updates. We’ll send invitations through our alumni database, but if contact info isn’t current, we’ll use the last email on file. Keeping your list fresh means more classmates get the invite.
2. Create a Social Media Hub
Many classmates reconnect on Instagram or Facebook Start a private group for your class to share updates, photos, and event details.
3. Build a Team
Recruit 4–6 classmates to help divide up outreach. This ensures more personal contact and a higher chance of bringing everyone together.
4. Remember—Every Class is Unique
There’s no “perfect” number for a successful reunion. The goal is simply to gather as many as possible. Sometimes, the most meaningful connections happen in smaller circles.
WHY REUNIONS MATTER
This past year reminded us how important it is to be present. A reunion isn’t just a date on the calendar—it’s a chance to relive treasured moments, strengthen bonds, and honor the legacy of Maryknoll. If you have the chance to go, take it. You never know when it will be your last opportunity to see a friend, share a laugh, or remember a story only your classmates would know.

Class of 1975 Celebrates Jubilarian Reunion
WITH WEEKLONG FESTIVITIES
WRITTEN BY CHASEN ST. ONGE '09
This summer, the Class of 1975 returned to Maryknoll for their long-awaited Jubilarian Reunion, and they did not disappoint. From the moment festivities began in early July through the close of Alumni Week 2025, the Class of ’75 celebrated with warmth, laughter, and Spartan pride, reminding everyone why reunions are such a special part of the Maryknoll tradition.
The milestone year carried extra sparkle for the group, thanks to their incredible achievement as the top fundraising class on Giving Day 2025. Together, they raised an impressive $67,351, a reflection not only of their generosity but also of their enduring love for Maryknoll. With their win came the coveted reward of a prime rib dinner, and the Class of ’75 knew exactly how to make the most of it. They transformed their prize into the official kickoff event of their reunion, gathering in Bachelot Hall for an evening filled with delicious food, heartfelt toasts, and the kind of camaraderie that only half a century of shared history can bring.
But the prime rib dinner was just the beginning. Over the course of Alumni Week, the Class of ’75 kept the celebration going with both private gatherings and campuswide events. The Alumni Luau set the tone for the week, a colorful, joy-filled evening where classmates reconnected, introduced spouses and significant others, and shared stories from their school days. The reunion atmosphere was equal parts nostalgia and excitement, as laughter echoed through conversations that picked up as though no time had passed at all.
For many, the highlight was simply being back on campus. Several classmates took the opportunity to walk through the Grade School and High School grounds, some for the first time in 50 years. Hallways that once bustled with students rushing to class now held the echoes of memories, and it
wasn’t uncommon to hear bursts of, “Do you remember when…?” followed by stories of favorite teachers, spirited sports games, and unforgettable moments of youthful mischief. The campus walk-throughs became an emotional full-circle experience, proof that while time has passed, the sense of belonging at Maryknoll remains timeless.
The week offered plenty of opportunities for both reflection and celebration. Casual gatherings gave classmates the chance to relax, catch up, and enjoy each other’s company, while the larger events, like the luau, showcased the vibrant spirit of the wider Spartan alumni community. In every setting, the Class of ’75 stood out for their energy, humor, and heartfelt connection to one another and to Maryknoll.
Their reunion wasn’t just about looking back; it was also about looking forward. The class’s leadership on Giving Day demonstrated their commitment to supporting the next generation of Spartans, ensuring that Maryknoll continues to thrive for years to come. Their gift was more than financial; it was a testament to their enduring belief in the values and education that shaped them 50 years ago.
As the festivities came to a close, one thing was certain: the Class of 1975 had made their Jubilarian Reunion an unforgettable milestone. With memories refreshed, friendships renewed, and a legacy strengthened, they left campus with the same Spartan pride they carried as students, only now, richer with the wisdom and joy of five decades lived.
For the Class of ’75, coming home to Maryknoll was more than a reunion; it was a celebration of family, faith, and the lifelong bond that makes every Spartan generation shine.

Maryknoll’s Class of 2025 marked a milestone to remember with a week of cherished traditions, heartfelt moments, and Spartan pride. From prayerful beginnings to joyous celebrations, graduation festivities highlighted not only the accomplishments of the senior class but also the deep bonds of family, faith, and community that make Maryknoll truly special.
The celebration began on the morning of June 5th with the annual Baccalaureate Mass, where families and friends came together to bless the graduating class. The Mass provided a meaningful moment of reflection before commencement, grounding the seniors in faith as they prepared to begin their next chapter. Families of students in the Maroon & Gold Society, those who attended Maryknoll from Kindergarten through 12th grade, received a special gift honoring 13 years of dedication and partnership with the school.
Later that evening, the spotlight turned to Class Night, one of Maryknoll’s most beloved traditions. Held at the historic Hawai‘i Theatre, the event was filled with nostalgia, pride, and celebration. The grandeur of the theater set the stage for an evening of recognition as faculty and staff presented awards honoring the class’s achievements in academics, service, leadership, and spirit. The night culminated in the moving candlelight ceremony, when seniors passed the symbolic Maryknoll “torch” to the incoming Class of 2026, affirming the continuation of Spartan legacy. The glow of the candles and the sense of tradition created an atmosphere that graduates, and their families will never forget.
The festivities continued the next day, June 6th, with the 91st Annual Commencement Ceremony at Neal Blaisdell Concert Hall. Dressed in caps and gowns, the Class of 2025 processed into the concert hall to the cheers of proud families and friends. The ceremony celebrated the students’ academic
achievements, personal growth, and shared experiences that defined their high school years. Following commencement, the graduates were surrounded by loved ones, adorned with layers of lei, hugs, and words of encouragement as they officially joined the ranks of Maryknoll alumni.
To close out their high school journey, the seniors came together one last time for Project Graduation, a night filled with fun, laughter, and unforgettable memories. It was the perfect finale, allowing the Class of 2025 to celebrate their Spartan spirit as a class before heading off in new directions.
From start to finish, Maryknoll’s graduation celebrations were a reflection of what makes the Spartan experience so unique: the blending of tradition and community, faith and joy, pride and purpose. Congratulations to the Class of 2025, your future is bright, and your Maryknoll family will always be cheering you on!
