One evening last winter, I was relaxing with colleagues over a cup of tea in the dining hall after dinner. The conversation turned to an examination of how long each of us had been employed at Marvelwood.

“I started teaching here in 1990, when I was 27,” I offered. As my friends continued to share, I found myself doing a little bit of math in my head: 27 years old in 1990, 28 years had passed since 1990 … I had been working at Marvelwood for over half my life! It was a milestone moment—one among what I recognize as many others in what has quietly become my increasingly long-term commitment to the School. Another came more recently, when I accepted the appointment to become Interim Head of School.

Every year at graduation, we’re reminded that the Marvelwood experience is really all about milestone moments. Our 2018 graduation speakers, members of the first graduating class, shared memories that shaped them as young men and solidified appreciation for the School in their hearts. Marvelwood’s alumni and staff have observed so many significant moments: Robert Bodkin’s retirement, the Easter morning passing of Desmond Letsie Mphenyeke ’91, the Herculean move from Cornwall to Kent, Ultimate Frisbee players orchestrating a final pass to “Mr. Marvelwood” Will Connor ’12 to win the 2012 HVAL championship, Jared Ganeles ’18 bringing down the house with his Hamilton rap at Class Night, the “reveal” of the incredible floor-to-ceiling renovation of all four dormitories, and most recently, an astounding $10 million gift to the School. For all the public moments, there are many more quiet, personal ones: finally earning that A on a Spanish test, making a first real best friend, running an entire cross country race without stopping, the immense pride that comes with taking risks and finding reward. These moments can often be individual and communal at the same time—public and personal milestones whose impact and importance are shared across generations of students and which span the divide that, essentially only geographically, separates the Cornwall decades from the Kent years.

Now, in the twilight of our 60th anniversary year, The Marvelwood School stands poised in its own milestone moment. We look back with fondness and gratitude at a rich history of memories made and shared in a magical valley and on a majestic mountaintop, and we look forward to the next 60 years with hope, purpose, and pride. Together, already, we cherish the moments yet to be experienced and the milestones yet to be remembered.

Looking forward to the next 60 years Wrapping up our 60th Anniversary Celebrations In 2016, we began two years of celebrations, marking 60 years as a school.

With the Commencement of the Class of 2018 in May, we welcomed our 60th graduating class to the Alumni Community. Marvelwood’s first students began their journey in September of 1956. Two years later, the School welcomed its first alumni when four young men, the Class of 1958, graduated. The Class of 2018 was co-ed, quite a bit larger, and far more diverse, yet the essence of the journey remains the same.

The School, which was originally located at the top of the stunning Coltsfoot Valley in the Village of Cornwall for 39 years, now makes its home on top of Skiff Mountain in Kent, an equally beautiful site just 12 miles from the original campus. In the 23 years since we left Cornwall, the student body has grown from 90 to 140. We have more buildings, more space, more fields, more faculty, and more buses. In the 62 years since Robert Bodkin started admitting students, the Mission Statement has been updated, core values have been defined, and programs have been expanded; what remains the same is the thread that weaves through Marvelwood’s 60+ years. The School has always been a place that supports, challenges, and encourages its students, fostering deep feelings of belonging and of caring for one another. The growing sense of family and purpose enriches each student’s time on campus and continues to guide them after graduation.

How did Marvelwood get its unique name?

Robert Bodkin and Ian Hanna founded The Marvelwood School in 1956.

There was much discussion, of course, about what to call the school, including The Cornwall School. Marvelwood was an estate belonging to friends of Mr. Hanna’s family in New Haven, Connecticut. It was named for the popular 19th century American writer Donald Grant Mitchell, who wrote such works as Reveries of a Bachelor and Dream Life under the pseudonym Ik Marvel, inspired by 17th century English poet Andrew Marvell. After some debate between the two founders, they decided on The Marvelwood School. Though the name was considerably less preppy-sounding than the established schools of the day like Taft, Hotchkiss, St. Pauls, and Choate, it fit their mission to create a traditional boarding school for young men who, according to Mr. Bodkin, “had not yet discovered how to make the most of themselves.” The majority of the former Marvelwood estate is now part of the Yale University Golf Course, although Marvelwood Drive still exists as a street in New Haven. In Kent, The Marvelwood School is thriving and looking forward to the next 60 years of educating and impacting the lives of young people.

The Bodkin Legacy

Most schools begin as institutions. They are

purposeful but impersonal places, organizations where an explicit mission provides a foundation, an overarching set of goals, and an abiding center.

But the Marvelwood School that I first visited in late 1980 was not institutional. At heart, it was intimate, personal, and familial.

That heart had been beating within two persons: Bob and Cornelia Bodkin. A childless couple, Marvelwood had provided a throng of surrogate children for the Bodkins, who had discovered they needed to share the experience of bringing up kids at the very center of their lives together.

Marvelwood had been their “labor of love” for 25 years, and as of 1980, it still was. As a result, the time to retire from their school was both as proud and as painful an experience for them as it is for each of us when the kids we’ve deeply loved must move on to run things for themselves.

That Bob and Cornelia dealt with this transition courageously and generously was, of course, in character for them. That’s the kind of people they were. But they also knew they were leaving behind something they’d created that was very important—and they made sure I understood this. A quasi-parental, intimate, profoundly earnest commitment to the growth and empowerment of each and every young person who was a Marvelwood student had been Bob and Cornelia’s objective—and their School’s unique educational method—from day one.

That commitment was the Bodkin legacy.

Think of it as the School’s “endowment” (for, in fact, no other kind of endowment then existed; what did exist was a mountain of debt that I sometimes called the “dis-endowment”). If Marvelwood were to survive as Marvelwood, the non-monetary endowment that the Bodkins had created had to be sustained and nurtured, at the same time that the school’s development as an institution moved ahead.

At that moment, Marvelwood was much like how one of today’s hightech “start-up” organizations can be at the end of a successful first phase of development. Marvelwood had focused on bringing to the independentschool marketplace a much-needed pedagogical innovation, and it had triumphantly proved this innovation’s worth; but it had yet to evolve the organizational and financial structures, or the professional culture, that it would need in order to survive long-term.

Helping Marvelwood make a transition from Bob and Cornelia’s personal and intimate yet fragile school to a more institutional and enduring one, while at the same time preserving the unique Bodkin legacy as the core of the whole endeavor, was to be my job description.

I won’t go into the details of what it was like to take on that eight-year job, except to say that much of the time it provided the sort of challenging contradiction that one experiences when trying to pat one’s head and rub one’s stomach simultaneously. For example, Marvelwood needed to develop an explicit and more formal institutional structure. It needed to work on raising capital, retiring debt, and expanding or replacing a beloved but inadequate campus. The School desperately needed to learn how to operate in the black. It also had to “professionalize” its faculty culture, and to discipline the way that professional culture shaped instruction. But, just as importantly, Marvelwood needed, at the heart of everything it did, every day, to persist in being the unique, intimate, child-cherishing, supportive place Bob and Cornelia had created.

To get my transition-to-institutional-life job done, I knew I had to accept from the get-go that Marvelwood should not have another 25 year “parent” as its Head of School. At first, that limitation didn’t trouble me. In the organizational vocabulary of that era, both the Board and I knew that my role was to be a “change agent.” I would air-drop into the School, help it move into its next stage of organizational evolution in the right way, and then briskly move on. So I was resolved that I would not over-invest in Marvelwood, emotionally.

After all, my own 19 years of boarding school life had certainly taught me that deep organizational change never happens without friction, and that the heat of that friction can be scorching for even the most skillful change-agent. It was also obvious that the second Head of Marvelwood could not count on being as appreciated, much less as loved, as the Bodkins had been, so keeping some professional distance between me and the job, and also being sure I had a draft letter of resignation in my back pocket at all times, seemed a wise plan.

However, in a way that in itself conformed to the Bodkin legacy, the experience of day-to-day life at Marvelwood almost immediately began to undermine my original intention to keep the School at an emotional arm’s length. In time, not only did a profound change in how I connected to the School begin to happen for me, but my wife Barbara and I both began to be captured by the “labor of love” aspect of how leading this unusual School could shape both Marvelwood and its leaders. And ironically, Barbara’s cancer diagnosis at the beginning of our last year at the School

and her hospitalization for treatment in Boston during the middle part of that academic year ended up not as a distraction, but as an experience that greatly deepened our bond to the School. Why? Well, just as all parents learn sooner or later that the love for children that originally ties families together has to be allowed to become a two-way care-taking transaction, this School that we arrived to care for had to be allowed to care for us. It did so, and that made an enormous difference for us. Of course, this also made it very much harder to move on than we’d anticipated!

But move on we did. Just as such inevitable losses tend to be for parents, what was being lost by us simply had to be accepted as a part of a larger and more important process that we’d been part of. And so time passed and our professional lives evolved in fulfilling ways. Barbara and I have tried to be disciplined enough to stand back quietly and watch Marvelwood pursue the legacy of its founders, through four successive administrations and now a fifth (“interim”) stage of leadership.

And yet, another “Marvelwood surprise” happened—or more than one!

Three years ago, Board Chair Tim Carpenter ’71 asked me to join the Marvelwood Board of Trustees. For all sorts of reasons, I hesitated.

The most obvious was based on what I’d learned in 15 years of service to many, many other independent schools through CAIS and NAIS: seldom do former Headmasters who became Trustees really help a Board focus on driving the school boldly into the future.

But other reasons were more personal. Chief among them was that we’d come to love this place so much, if privately; what would it feel like to step back into this relationship, even if, necessarily, in a more constrained way?

Ultimately, as our decision to move to Marvelwood had been so many years before, we both said “let’s go for it.”

Helping Marvelwood make a transition from Bob and Cornelia’s personal and intimate yet fragile school to a more institutional and enduring one, while at the same time preserving the unique Bodkin legacy as the core of the whole endeavor, was to be my job description.

Along with my work as a Trustee, Barbara stepped back into the School, too, in this instance helping Laurie Doss (who’d been at the School since my days as Head) and a group of student volunteers begin what became a permanent campus beautification/science education/service undertaking that’s come to be called “the Daffodil Project.”

And then… not long after Barbara’s death in 2016, our grandson Owen, who was bored and unhappy in his California high school, told me he wanted a change, and he thought that change could happen at Marvelwood. Owen was right; he began as a Sophomore in the autumn of last year, and he has flourished both academically and otherwise, including as a member of a student group that has been producing prize-winning documentary films.

What could be a more complete sort of re-connection?

Well, this. On Father’s Day, 2018, Owen sent me a link to a minidocumentary he’d created about his beloved grandmother, about Barbara’s “Daffodil Project,” and, above all, about what both she and the project on his school’s campus meant to him. Yes, the Bodkin legacy is alive and well at your, and my, School. Marvelwood may now be on a different campus. It certainly is a more grown-up and stable institution. But it is also still and very authentically “intimate, personal, and familial,” just as it was created to be, 60 years ago.

he 60th graduation weekend festivities began Thursday afternoon when the seniors returned from their four-day Washington, D.C. trip, where they

had performed community service, visited museums, and spent their last four days together as a class. Thursday evening, the entire community gathered in the dorm circle for dinner and music. Students and faculty ordered individual pizzas and beverages of choice from a parked pizza truck. The community sat at picnic tables dining on delicious pizza and talking about the Washington, D.C. trip, graduation, and upcoming summer plans. Students and faculty tossed around frisbees and danced on the lawn as the faculty children ran around. It was a splendid evening to commence graduation weekend.

On Friday morning, the School community gathered in the Burton Alumni Gymnasium for Prize Day. Parents and grandparents were invited to the ceremony, where students were honored for their achievements in academics, athletics, and the arts. As student names were read out and they walked to the stage to receive their prizes, parents, students, and faculty cheered. It was a morning of celebration.

Late Friday afternoon, the Head of School Art Goodearl and his wife Mary hosted the traditional Parent Reception at the Head’s home. Parents, grandparents, and faculty gathered for one last time to talk informally about the school year. Graduation speaker Ken Ingraham ’58 was able to join the faculty and parents and shared stories of his time at Marvelwood in Cornwall. Following the Head’s reception, the Senior dinner took place in the dining room, where the junior class served a delicious meal and also bussed the tables.

After dinner, everyone returned to the Athletic Center for the Senior Night Program, with seniors performing musical numbers and readings. The program ended with the traditional senior slideshow, which was accompanied by much cheering and a few tears.

On Saturday morning, the students and faculty met at 10:00 in the School House. The senior girls were given red roses to carry and the boys received their Marvelwood ties to wear at graduation.

The underclassman lined the walkway, preparing for the ceremony to begin. At 11:00, the procession, led by a bagpiper, the Head of School, Trustees, graduation speakers, faculty, and students, made its way to the Athletic Center. This year, Marvelwood celebrated its 60th graduating class. To mark this milestone, members of the first graduating class, Thomas Auchincloss ’58 and Ken Ingraham ’58, were the graduation speakers. Indeed, it was a special moment for the Marvelwood community to hear these two distinguished alums speak.

Immediately following the graduation ceremony and per tradition, the seniors—now alumni—gathered at the Piper Bell and rang it to mark their graduation and induction as alumni.

Students, parents, grandparents, faculty, and friends gathered in the dining room for another delicious graduation luncheon. Seniors surrounded the graduation speakers’ table to offer words of thanks and appreciation to Mr. Auchincloss and Mr. Ingraham. After lunch, students and parents finished packing their cars and clearing the last boxes from dorm rooms. By mid-afternoon, the campus was quiet and the school year had ended.

This moment, this ceremony, however symbolic, is also real, and for me, is accompanied by a number of emotions, most of which are ecstatic, but admittedly, I somehow feel a sense of impossible nostalgia for something that isn’t yet a memory. The pictures being taken now will be in frames on walls and coffee tables. In scrapbooks, shown to grandchildren. Look at us now.

Today is a day for hugs, kisses, a handshake, a pat on the back, well wishing, and congratulations. It is, after all, Graduation.

So congratulations to all of you, my friends. Thank you to my teachers, coaches, and everyone else who acted as a guide along the way, directing us towards greatness and preventing us from straying too far from the path.

Eighteen years of hard work. Of sacrifice. Of victory. Of momentary defeat. Of hope, and inspiration that we will overcome even the most difficult of obstacles. Of Laughter. Of tears. Often, tears from laughter.

I look at you and I see myself 60 years ago.

You look at me, it is what it is. Nothing hits you harder than time. Time is also the chronicle of your life. When I first arrived at Marvelwood, Mr. Bodkin the founder taught me this life guide: Pursue opportunities, overcome adversity, live your dream. The dream? My dogs think it is catching rabbit.

For some, it is just as elusive.

Around this time 60 years ago, The Marvelwood School proudly graduated its first class of four seniors at its first commencement exercise held aside the Calhoun house on a sunny but very windy day in Cornwall, CT. I would proudly be in that group….

A lot of credit must be given to the founders, Robert A. Bodkin and Ian Hanna, along with their wives, in forming an important nucleus leading to quite a successful first school year.

I thought it might be fun to consider which presidents, excluding those who have served in the current century, exhibit Marvelwood’s core values best.

Our first core value is honesty, which emphasizes truth telling, even when consequences might be great.

My nominee here is Harry Truman.

Never one to shy away from making the tough decision, he invited controversy by desegregating the Armed Forces after World War II….

Our second core value is respect, not simply for others but for all of life. Here, the choice is Theodore Roosevelt, perhaps America’s most vigorous environmental champion. As a young asthmatic man, TR learned first hand about the healing qualities of the nation’s natural environment, particularly in the West….

The third core value is responsibility, meaning a willingness to be held accountable. The nominee here is James Madison, the Father of the Constitution, who helped create a government which depended on three co-equal branches holding each other accountable. Madison was a man possessed of keen intellect, and the American Constitution, which he largely crafted, is rightly held to be one of the most important treatises on government in the history of the world….

Our fourth core value is service. This one demands that the interests and needs of the larger community be regularly addressed. The Baby Boom generation and their parents understood that America’s role in the world would be one of leadership. President John F. Kennedy underscored that new reality in creating the Peace Corps, a remarkable institution, which, since its founding in 1961, has harnessed and channeled the idealism of nearly one quarter of a million American citizens working in more than 140 countries around the world.

I leave you with this: find your passion, as I have found mine, celebrate it, and share it with others. And now, my friends, let us meet at the bell as you commence.

Kailin ’Kelvin’ Hu ’18, Zohra Moradi ’18 Desmond Letsie Mphenyeke ’91 came to Marvelwood as a freshman from Soweto, South Africa to escape the injustices of apartheid, and he hoped to return to South Africa one day to help integrate the people of his country. Desmond’s untimely death of congenital heart failure on April 3, 1988, united the Marvelwood Community in the importance of acceptance and tolerance. Odin Beardsley ’20, Oliver Sanchez ’20 Barbara Tacy was the wife of Marvelwood’s second Headmaster, Peter Tacy. A passionate gardener, she worked with Marvelwood students and faculty to share her love and knowledge of daffodils. Thanks to Barbara’s efforts, the campus is ablaze with thousands of daffodils each spring, some of which have won awards in the Connecticut Daffodil Show. The Barbara Tacy Daffodil Spirit Award is presented to the Marvelwood community members who best embrace Mrs. Tacy’s love of daffodils and the inquisitiveness she exhibited toward these beautiful flowers.

WALTER KANE SCIENTIFIC SPIRIT AWARD Stuart Smith ’18 Dr. Walter Kane joined the Marvelwood faculty in 2000 after a long and distinguished career as a nuclear physicist.

At Marvelwood, Walter taught an array of classes over the years, ranging from advanced-level physics and chemistry to Russian. Perhaps what was most admired about Walter was his amazing scientific mind, his memory, and his curiosity about the world and the way things worked. The inaugural recipient of the Walter Kane Scientific Spirit Award is Stuart Smith ’18.

Xiaoye ’Able’ Zhou ’18 Lillian Steinmayer ’19 Conservationist Rachel Carson once articulated that one way to open people’s eyes to both the beauties and dangers in this world was to ask, “What if I had never seen this before? What if I knew I would never see it again?” The Rachel Carson Conservation Award is given to students who, via their actions, help to protect and/or raise awareness about the natural world in their local and/or global communities.

Xiaoye ’Able’ Zhou ’18 used drone technology and photography to create a video and StoryMap about the Macedonia Forest Block Important Bird Area. Xiaoye also volunteered his drone skills to assist local emergency management teams in monitoring the ice dams and flooding along the Housatonic River in January of 2018.

Lillian Steinmayer ’19, in conjunction with the University of Connecticut’s Conservation Training Partnership program, designed a program which introduces children to birds in their backyard and the actions they can take to project habitats for breeding and migrating birds in Kent.

They remained in contact with the Bodkins after Steve’s graduation and following their retirement from the School in 1980. Steve and Mary visited the Bodkins at their home on Martha’s Vineyard just before Robert’s passing in 2004.

Steve served on the Board of Trustees during Peter Tacy’s tenure as Headmaster. He recalls watching “as Peter took this small school on a voyage of discovery, joining Round Square, a group of schools from many countries around the world… all promoting democracy, care of the environment, adventure, leadership, and service to the community, while connecting students at yearly conferences, exchanges, and service projects.” In 1988, Marvelwood hosted the annual Round Square Conference, which brought delegations of students and teachers from over forty schools around the world to the tiny village of Cornwall. Friends and neighbors throughout the area generously hosted delegates and shared in the extraordinary experience. Mary recalls that she and Steve, who attended the conference, stayed at a house in Lakeville, CT with King Constantine of Greece, one of the founders of Round Square who remains active in the organization. Under the leadership of Arthur F. Goodearl, Jr., Marvelwood renewed its involvement with Round Square in 2016. This year, Marvelwood sent a delegation of five students and one adult to the annual conference at Ashbury Steve and Mary with Cynthia Shevlin and Bob Swanson P’93, at the dedication of the Anne College in Ottawa, Canada.

Arthur F. Goodearl, Jr. Marvelwood’s Sixth Head of School

Art Goodearl served the independent school community for 47 years.

He arrived on the Marvelwood campus on July 1, 2011 as the sixth Head of School, and brought with him an abundant knowledge of boarding school management, life, and requirements. He quickly took measure and implemented his management skills to stabilize and put into place a number of key disciplines that had positive impact. We are all very grateful to Art for the impact he had on the growth Marvelwood experienced during his tenure.

Art is an education professional with the highest level of integrity, fairness, dedication, and devotion to the field. His achievements and contributions to Marvelwood, as well as several other schools, are widely recognized throughout the independent school community.

Rounding out his tenure as Head of School, Art was a major force behind Marvelwood’s multi-million dollar campus-wide renovation project. He continues to guide and assist advancement efforts, which are so crucial to the future of our school. In August, Art and Mary moved to

their new home just outside the center of Kent, Connecticut. I’ve had the opportunity to see their home; it’s lovely, and perfect for the two of them.

For me, it has been a pleasure to work alongside Art for the past six years, learning, accomplishing, and enjoying each other’s company. I know I speak for many when I wish both Art and Mary many years of good health and happiness, with time for family and loved ones.

AN INTERVIEW WITH ART GOODEARL What are the challenges currently facing independent schools, especially boarding schools?

The demographics of the admissions pool have posed challenges to all but a dozen or so of the“power” preps. Schools need to analyze those demographics with care. Rising tuitions challenge schools to demonstrate that the value of a boarding education matches the financial outlay.

Schools need to articulate the relevance of boarding education in the new century, which Marvelwood has been doing in the context of the “21st Century Neighborhood,” which has resonated with families with whom I have worked.

How is Marvelwood meeting these challenges?

Marvelwood enjoys a crisp, focused, and unique mission. It is comfortable in its identity but is not, and cannot afford to be, self-satisfied. It needs to continue to execute its mission even as other schools are adding support services, which have been the hallmark of the Marvelwood educational experience. The future belongs to those schools which execute their missions better than their competitors.

What makes Marvelwood stand out from its competitors?

The Marvelwood educational program works for a widely diverse array of learning styles. We have worked hard to create an affirmative school culture at every level. Students and their achievements are celebrated. At Marvelwood, education is a “positive sum game,” in which all students can be winners, instead of a “negative sum game,” in which some triumph and are celebrated at the expense of others.

What is the type of student who gets the most out of Marvelwood?

All students have the potential to succeed at Marvelwood. Here, there is support for students who need that and academic challenge for those who relish it, whether in the form of AP tests or competitions off campus. The Marvelwood educational and social experience can be lifechanging for students.

What is the significance of the campus renovation project (dorm, PAC roof, and science lab) currently underway?

This is a tough one, because there really were so many. As I mentioned, creating an affirmative culture at any school is a real challenge, but the result is plain for people to see and experience here. I’m proud that I helped guide Marvelwood forward to the point that its reputation is now especially strong and able to compete with schools not previously on our radar. The new state-of-the-art science lab, designed by our science faculty, opens the door to wonderfully new creative educational activities.

Our science colleagues were hard at work this summer designing new curricula so that they hit the ground running in the fall. Our newly renovated dorms will dramatically improve the residential experience of our students and will be a tremendous asset for admissions.

In our recent re-accreditation report from NEASC, Marvelwood was given exemplary ratings in three areas: faculty, program, and experience of the students. How is that significant for the School going forward?

Schools need to build on their strengths, and the NEASC Report has identified several of those. There are others as well. It is gratifying when peers confirm what Marvelwood believes a number of its strengths to be.

How has the experience of the boarding student changed (and/or stayed the same) in your many years in the profession?

What are the benefits of boarding schools vs. day schools?

Boarding schools have never been more relevant.

Families are smaller than in the past, and for many parents, the world outside the home doesn’t feel safe. The challenge today is for adolescents to acquire “social skills.” For too many families, this puts much pressure on mom and dad to develop those moments of interaction. As mentioned earlier, the modern boarding school is analogous to an old-fashioned neighborhood, where kids could interact spontaneously with each other, with adults nearby as needed. In this way, social skills developed. That is what Marvelwood is: open and safe spaces both in and out of dorms, where those critical associations, and important moments of social growth, happen.

As a presidential historian, which US president do you most admire and why?

John Quincy Adams. He felt a passion for justice and became, arguably, not just a strong voice in the anti-slavery movement, but an effective legislator as well. Strong-minded and courageous, he set the bar really high for his successors.

What made you choose education as a career?

I always felt a “calling.” Not sure why, except that I felt challenged to help students open their minds to areas within the curriculum, which proved to be a challenge for me.

Who do you look to for inspiration/ guidance in the field of education?

Howard Gardner, a prolific author and educator at the Harvard Graduate School of Education.

If you had chosen another profession, what might it have been?

It would have been the law.

What do you look forward to doing more of in retirement?

AN INTERVIEW WITH MARY LINA GOODEARL Librarian, wife of Marvelwood’s Sixth Head of School, Arthur F. Goodearl, Jr. Having been at a number of very different school communities, what do you see as Marvelwood’s strengths?

The school has a noble mission. The campus is set in an area of great natural beauty. Marvelwood’s greatest strength is the student body.

What are some of your fondest memories of your time at Marvelwood?

I have many fond memories of our Marvelwood years. The ones that come quickly to mind are: quiet hours working in the library, visiting the breeding facility for the Guiding Eyes for the Blind dogs with Laurie Doss, being part of a group of community members going out to count purple martin hatchlings, and planting daffodils around the house with my daughter, granddaughter, Laurie Doss, and Barbara Tacy.

The Children’s Christmas Party is a special event. It begins with refreshments and quickly moves to the library, where holiday songs are sung. Santa, who has popped out of the chimney in one of the second floor bedrooms, comes down the stairs ringing his sleigh bells. When asked why Santa doesn’t come down the chimney into the library, we always point out that it is a shorter distance from the roof to the second floor fireplace, and there is a fire in the library fireplace.

It is the small personal moments that I will remember, the thank-you notes with pictures, or hearing how one of the books a child received from Santa has become part of their bedtime routine or made an impression when they took it to school for show-and-tell. Last year, one of the guests recognized the antique door key in the front door as the magic key from a Christmas book he had read. I have noticed, more than once, at the

opening of the Children’s Christmas party, a child standing at the bottom of the staircase, looking up with a thoughtful look on his or her face.

I enjoyed every event we hosted and all the guests we welcomed to the house. The events help to bring together students, families, faculty, staff, neighbors, and friends of the School. For several years, Art and I attended a conference for heads of school and spouses. It did not take long to realize that the schools that have traditions of bringing various groups together for events have more cohesive communities and enjoyed better “town/gown” relationships.

What have you most liked about living on a boarding school campus?

There is never a dull moment living on a boarding school campus. We arrived on The Choate School campus in September, 1970. In 1972, Rosemary Hall joined Choate and the campus grew to 1,000 students.

It was like a small town. You could be on the faculty hockey team or the women’s volleyball teams; go to performances by Momix or the Vienna Choir Boys; or see Bruce Springsteen at the Paul Mellon Arts Center.

After dinner, the faculty children would gather on the field outside the Rosemary Hall dining room and play while their parents had a short break before the evening’s activities.

In the early years, Art was on duty every-other night and every other weekend. He taught history, coached, and was Director of Activities. I didn’t officially work for the School, but there were times when I was called upon to act in Art’s place.

In our apartment, there was a door between the dormitory common room and Art’s study. The door was open every night when we were home and the children in bed. During the day, there were lots of knocks at the door: “Can I have a boy in my room?”; “Can I use the phone?”; “Can I make cookies in your kitchen?”; “Is Mr. Goodearl here?” You never knew who or what you might encounter when you opened your door to a knock, including Bianca Jagger, Sander Vanocur, Alan J. Lerner, two G-men, and a group of young men led by an oddly familiar-looking fellow with a huge red Afro. I later found out it was one of Mickey Rooney’s son.

“Hi!” said young Mr. Rooney, “Are you Goodearl’s Old Lady?” I was 26 (did he think I was Art’s Mother?) “We are Road Apple!” he announced proudly.

What can you say to that? By this time, I had three children clinging to my legs.

Road Apple had come to campus to play for a dance at the upper campus gym, and they had gotten their truck stuck in mud driving across the soccer field near our dorm. They tried to free the truck by tucking sheets of plywood under the wheels, which, of course, just caused the plywood to shoot out behind the truck like Odd Job’s hat, luckily missing the Road Apple band members.

By this time, Art had returned from his game and called Mr. Plunsky, who had a garage nearby on Route 5. Mr. Plunsky drove up chomping on his ever-present cigar and assessed the situation with his now famous quote that we use when faced with a big mess… “I shoulda brought the big truck!”

How is the experience of raising children different on a boarding school campus?

I only have the first nine months of Tom’s life that I can claim as experience in raising a child not on a boarding school campus. People who had raised children on the campus assured us that faculty children were “fireproof.” Over the years, I developed my own theory. In simple terms, a child’s development is similar in some ways to building a building. The more attention you pay to making a secure foundation, the better the building will be. Our children were both sheltered and exposed to things that most children don’t learn about until years later.

Tom, age five, came into the house carrying a bong. When I asked him what it was, he looked it over and told me that it was a bong and it was for smoking drugs. My first thought was, “I’m out of here! Science Department Chair Laurie Doss

After 31 years of teaching at Marvelwood, Laurie Doss has a lot of

stories. Between life on a boarding school campus and dozens of trips—28 domestic field trips and 24 international trips—Laurie has shared countless experiences with students and faculty over the years.

In 1987, Laurie was hired by Toby Scott, the Director of Academics at the time, to teach science, coach, and live in a dorm, first Ronshaugen and then Calhoun in Cornwall, and finally Sterling Dorm in Kent.

Laurie’s memories of the early years in Cornwall include the family-like atmosphere of the School, the School’s commitment to the community through weekly service outreach, having to dress for formal dinner (of which she was not a fan), Dean of Students Joe Neary standing at the Dining Hall entrance making sure students had socks on before they could eat breakfast, playing town pick-up softball games with Lynn and Hugh Cheney, coaching soccer with Sheila Esten, having the girls in the dorm pile into her apartment to watch television on just three channels in the pre-cable days and sneaking out of the dorm with Keisha Cleveland Baptiste ’91, Tiki Rimany ’91, and other girls to hide in the bushes of Thurber Dorm and play Coaching softball in Cornwall wildlife calls while laughing hysterically at the 18

boys’ reactions. It could be said that Laurie enjoys just a bit of mischief.

She also recognizes and appreciates the strong sense of community that guides the School through even the most difficult experiences. In her first year as a teacher, the School was faced with the unthinkable: the untimely death of a student, Desmond Letsie Mphenyeke ’91, in his dorm room on Easter Sunday. The community came together to support each other and honor the life of Desmond, who had come to the United States from South Africa to escape the injustices of apartheid. Each year at Prize Day, Laurie presents the Desmond Letsie Mphenyeke award to a student or students “whose love of school and the opportunities to learn in and out of the classroom best exemplify Desmond’s spirit.” A few years later in 1989, tornadoes smashed through the Village of Cornwall and the Marvelwood campus; once again, the community came together and faced terrific adversity together.

Logistical challenges have never been an obstacle for Laurie, as she has ventured near and far with her students and a variety of faculty and staff chaperones. For many years, Cape Cod was a destination in the spring. On one of her first trips, Laurie enlisted the help of Cindy Kirk,

who ran the kitchen on the Cornwall campus back when the school was small enough that the food service was handled internally. Laurie wanted the students to experience a real lobster dinner. In an attempt to lower expenses, Laurie and Cindy cooked a dozen lobsters in their room at the Wellfleet Motel. Cooking the lobsters in a steaming pot they brought took four hours and left them and the motel room smelling like seafood for days! While Laurie is known to have inspired many future scientists, Rob Garceau ’92 was on the trip and went on to an accomplished career in the culinary arts.

Laurie is probably best known for her international trips, which she has planned, organized, prepared for, and executed every year—sometimes twice a year—for the past 21 years. Destinations have included Belize, Costa Rica, the Galapagos Islands, the Amazon Rainforest and Machu Picchu in Peru, Guatemala, Brazil, and, of course, Panama, to which she’s led over a dozen trips. The Cocobolo Nature Reserve, located at the

narrowest stretch of Mesoamerica, has become a ‘home away from home’ for Laurie. It’s here where she’s introduced many students to the incredible biodiversity of the area. Having accompanied her on the trip four times, it’s an understatement to say that her enthusiasm is contagious. The trip is a journey of exploration that leaves you wanting more, and everyone gains an understanding of the fragile and intertwined world in which we live.

Perpetuating respect for our world and each other is a key tenet in what drives Laurie. On the Panama trip, interacting with local communities and children is always a highlight and has become more than just cultural exploration. In the Embera Drua village, where Laurie is greeted as a family member by the tribe’s chief, Ivan, her favorite part is, “watching our kids and their kids interact via various activities despite the language barrier.” The Embera Drua, who migrated in the mid-1970s from the Darien Region in northern Panama to the Chagres River to escape conflict with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), and to have better access to education and medical opportunities, have been able to sustain their traditional way of life through ecotourism, proudly and deliberately welcoming visitors to their tribal village to spend the day and learn about their customs.

The village of La Zahina, a half-day’s walk from Cocobolo, is an entirely different story. The village is home to about 30 families who live off the grid, with very little means to support themselves. Petra is the village school’s long-time teacher who works hard to get what she can for her students through a complicated state-system. Over the years, Laurie and Petra have worked together to create programs for their students to interact with each other during our visits. Memorable activities have included tie dying, bird identification, and puzzle competitions. Long-term programs have included CLICK (Communities Linking Internationally to Raise Conservation Awareness in Kids), for which cameras were left with the children of La Zahina. The children, many of whom had never ventured into the nearby rainforest, were tasked with exploring their area and photo-documenting their discoveries. Each year since then, the children have excitedly and proudly showcased their discoveries to Laurie and the Marvelwood students. Just this past year we learned that one particular young man, Angel, had been so inspired by these experiences that he’s going to school for ecotourism to become an official Panamanian tour guide. While the village school only progresses through 6th grade, this young man made the commitment at a young age to travel far from home to pursue an education that will provide an income and enable him to share Panama’s biodiversity with others.

Panama is rich with many animal species; from a jaguarundi running across your path to a tarantula mother on her nest in your shower, the sightings are thrilling. But it’s the avian diversity that most intrigues Laurie. “Each year, you feel as if you are going on a treasure hunt, and you are never sure what type of treasure buried in the forest, stream, or river that you will find next.” And she clearly enjoys encouraging others to participate. Over the years, Marvelwood students have contributed to the discovery of 380 avian species at Cocobolo Nature Reserve, making the Reserve the 14th-highest-rated hotspot out of 100 known hotspots for avian diversity in the country of Panama.

Having come of age at the height of forced bussing in Columbus, Ohio in the 1960s and ’70s, school desegregation policies had a formative impact on Laurie. “I went to school during a time when schools in white neighborhoods and black neighborhoods were divided in half. Forced bussing was designed to integrate schools and bring equality through educational opportunities. There was a lot of resentment all around, so I just tried to see people as people rather than the color of their skin, and/or as individuals rather than their social clique. I got along with kids in all the different social groups, which was probably how I ended up being elected Class President.”

Throughout her school years, however, Laurie did not consider herself a student, and she spent her fair share of time in the principal’s office. She eventually gravitated towards athletics, which came far more easily to her. classroom, with little outlet for a creative and curious mind. She says that the turning point came at the tail end of high school, when her English teacher, Mrs. Bolin, ‘kicked’ Laurie out of class, not for bad behavior, but because she recognized that Laurie should be in AP/ Honors levelEnglish. “I told her that, as my grammar sucked, she was sentencing me to an academic death sentence! Mrs. Bolin responded that my grammar would probably always “suck,” but that my mind needed to be challenged.

She didn’t give me a choice!” That class was one of the best academic experiences she had. Despite consistently low grades for grammar and mechanics, she earned A’s for content, and she clearly remembers most of the books they read, including: Call of the Wild, White Fang, Herland, Nineteen Eighty-Four, and Paradise Lost.

The theme throughout Laurie’s career as a science teacher has been involvement with the community and the world in which we live.

A commitment to conservation permeates the curriculum. Students don’t just learn about topics; they become active participants in the subject matter and often times effect change based on their work. It was student research and the capture of a Golden-winged Warbler (Vermivora chrysoptera) that provided data to help preserve over 400 acres on Skiff Mountain from development, designating areas of the Marvelwood campus and surrounding Kent Trust properties as a ‘Landscape-Level Important Bird Area.’ Grants were subsequently secured to have student-generated signage made for the area. When you think of what excites high school students, birds and bird banding don’t readily come to mind, yet when six Cerulean Warblers were captured in mist nets, the excitement and pride was palpable throughout campus.

Over the years, Laurie’s work with local and state agencies, including the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection and the Kent Land Trust, has gotten students and members of the Kent community of all ages involved in countless projects with tangible results.

Purple Martins, once designated ‘threatened’ in the Northwest Corner of the State, have now been elevated to ‘Species of Special Concern’ thanks to efforts to increase populations. While students may work towards grades during the school year, the real mark of their engagement goes beyond the syllabus. Monitoring bird populations and migration behaviors is a yearround endeavor, and it’s not uncommon to see students and community

members of all ages on weekends and in the summer months monitoring nets, recording data, maintaining Purple Martin houses and Blue Bird boxes, clearing trails, and exploring the vast array of habitats in the area.

Since 2001, over 4,000 birds have been mist netted and banded in the Northwest Corner. Many students have found their scientific calling at Marvelwood, including Lori Pelech ’99 and Sean Graesser ’08, both of whom have established successful careers in the field of conservation.

Going forward, the Science Department at Marvelwood will continue to set the pace for hands-on curriculum. “With the development of Next Generation Science Standards,” notes Laurie, “more and more science teachers are moving away from passive dissemination of information, and are becoming guides or conductors in helping students to discover the process and communication of science in meaningful ways which relates to real world problems.” This approach, of course, has always been the hallmark of science at Marvelwood, and it has been brought to new levels under Laurie’s guidance as Department Chair for the past 20+ years.

With the recent complete renovation of both Marvelwood science labs, as well as our brand new Innovation & Imaging Lab, Marvelwood science teachers are beginning to incorporate technology in ways unimaginable just a few years ago. Having started her teaching career in the pencil and paper era (literally!), Laurie has always been an early and eager adaptor of new processes, technologies, and opportunities. This year, she’s teaching classes utilizing drones to study bats and birds: “The fact that drones can be used to study wildlife both during the day, and at night, with infrared cameras, is amazing. Drones with infrared cameras are also being used to target poachers of endangered species who normally operate under the cover of darkness! Advances in Bioacoustics are also very exciting; this technology is being incorporated into affordable recording units to study bird and bat populations.”

Recently, Laurie participated in a five-day introductory-level Sound Analysis Workshop at the Imogene Powers Johnson Center for Birds and Biodiversity, part of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, in Ithaca, New York.

Participants included scientists and researchers from organizations around the world, including the Greenland Institute of Natural Resources; the Argentine Institute of Arid Zone Research, South Africa; Department of Agriculture; Forestry and Fisheries; and the Wildlife Conservation Society

of Canada. Laurie was the only high school teacher to attend the workshop, and she is, of course, enthusiastically sharing the technology with her students.

In November, the Board of Trustees formally named Lab A the Laurie K. Doss Science Lab, in recognition of her years of service to the School and the greater community, inspiring and encouraging the conservationist in all of us.

Andrew Moore ’14

It’s hard to imagine Andrew Moore ’14 being described as quiet and

shy, but as a freshman at Marvelwood, that’s exactly how he felt. Having come from Eagle Hill School in Greenwich, CT, Andrew was academically prepared for high school, but he wasn’t comfortable communicating with people and never felt like he connected with his peers. He viewed himself as an observer, and he very much wanted to break out of his shell. Upon beginning at Marvelwood, any reservations Andrew may have had about making new friends and acclimating to the community were quickly diminished. In Star Dorm, Andrew found a group of friends, most of whom stayed there through his senior year. Heather Hastings, their Dorm Parent for all four years and now the Dean of Students, recalls, “Those boys were tireless, mischievous, and incredibly fun, continually testing the boundaries of what could be climbed up and skateboarded on.”

Prior to Marvelwood, Andrew attended six schools in eight years, describing himself as “one of those kids who couldn’t take sitting at a desk for too long.” Reading was particularly challenging for Andrew and was the major focus of remediation and support throughout elementary school.

With so much focus on reading, though, Andrew was not challenged in other areas in which he may have excelled. “Eventually,” he says, “I gave up and didn’t want to try.” Finally, at Eagle Hill, Andrew’s educational experience changed: “They saw I was bored and began challenging me in math, while supporting my reading difficulties. It was an amazing experience; they got me.”

Andrew brought his new found academic confidence and awareness to Marvelwood and got right to work. Andrew estimates he spent 80% of his study hall time on English, his most challenging subject. His teacher, 22

Erin Timm, saw him struggle despite putting in a lot of effort, and she worked with him outside of class. Toward the end of the first semester, something clicked for him, and Andrew’s output started to match his effort; he went on to earn Excellence in 9th Grade English at Prize Day at the end of the year. Other teachers who made a difference for Andrew were his Strategies teacher, Dana Slaughter, who “wouldn’t let me do anything halfway”; Paige Root, who “pulled me along through three tough years of Spanish”; Dr. Grace Lin, whose difficult Precalculus class made Freshman Calculus at college “a breeze”; and Heni Foote’s “very hard but equally interesting” AP Economics, which inspired him to major in Innovation and Entrepreneurship with a minor in Finance at Clarkson College.

At the top of Coltsfoot Valley for Cornwall Prism Day

When Marvelwood was in Cornwall, the yearbook was called The Prism.

Cornwall Prism Day brings new students to the site of the old campus each September to learn about the early days of the School. Veteran faculty members and faculty members who were students on the old campus join me to lead a tour through the quiet village of Cornwall.

At the site of the former RPR dorm (now a family home), I describe my experience as a young teacher and dorm parent living in the secondfloor faculty apartment, and how I often threw lacrosse balls around with students in the backyard. We walk by Piper Dorm, Dunn House, and the softball field that I once lined as Athletic Director. At the Congregational Church, we talk about the graduations that were held there each spring.

At Rumsey Circle, now a playing field for the Town of Cornwall, I describe my very first athletic practices with the Girls Soccer team. Across the street is Trustees Dorm, now a family home, which still has the beautiful porch where students and faculty used to gather.

The last stop is the Calhoun building, once the hub of the School.

In front of the building, now a beautifully restored home at the corner of Pine and Bolton Streets, I recall days at the Bodkin Library, Mohawk Mountain, the incredible Cathedral Pines, the mysterious Dudleytown, and the magnificent Cornwall Valley and Coltsfoot Mountain. I talk about teaching history and math in the Monroe school building and dining in the converted barn. I show students where graduation photos were taken, where the school sign once stood, and where Piper Bell used to ring.

For me, Prism Days are important in preserving and honoring the unique history of our school. The Cornwall campus was a school environment unlike any other, and we’re proud to share that experience with future generations of Marvelwood alumni.

Working the Land on Skiff Mountain

In the peak of its third full summer, the Marvelwood Garden Program has become not only a feature

of the School’s landscape but a part of the fabric of its community. Just past the turn onto Skiff Mountain Road, the small .3-acre teaching garden greets passersby with flowers and greenery from spring to fall. Beyond the fenced garden sits the uniquely modern greenhouse, fondly referred to as the Dome. Installed in 2016, the Dome is a 26-foot round growing space that uses simple science combined with innovative technology to automatically regulate its interior temperature, allowing students to participate in year-round growing and learning.

Students participate in the garden program six days a week during the spring semester, preparing the soil for growing, composting, and planting seeds for the summer season. In inclement weather, the group retires indoors to practice cooking skills or watch food-related documentaries. In the fall and winter, students work in the garden and the Dome as part of the Community Service Program, harvesting, weeding, and putting the garden to bed for the season. The garden and the Dome offer students a new environment in which to practice much needed life skills, such as hard work, patience, cooperation, and problem solving. Fresh organic vegetables that are utilized by the dining hall and shared with faculty and staff are an additional welcome benefit. With voluntary poetry reading at the close of every workday, the garden is a sanctuary as well as a classroom.

New this year, a cooking club is in the works to help people connect the growing of plants with healthy and delicious eating. Once a week, students are able to research recipes, practice basic and complex cooking techniques, and use seasonal ingredients from the garden to prepare and cook a dish of their choice. From sweet potato fries to fresh blueberry pies, the cooking club affords non-gardeners a chance to participate in the bounty of the harvest.

The Wellness Initiative that is taking shape on the Marvelwood campus is a continuation of the ideas behind the garden program: to promote health and wellbeing in ourselves and our student population, to address the essential connectedness of our future to our environment, and to make mindful choices, both collectively and individually, to secure our future happiness.

by Hand: The Round Square Big Build in Ecuador

Authenticity comes to mind when reflecting on the Round Square Big

Build in Ecuador this past July.

Ecuador’s biggest and most metropolitan city is Guayaquil, which also happens to be the starting point for an intensely international learning experience. Here, Hostel Ñucapacha (translated as “our earth” in native Quechua) was about to be overrun by 55 bulging backpacks from 15 different nations around the world. Four of these backpacks arrived with intrepid Marvelwood travelers Justin Decoteau ’19, Natasha Nash ’19, Amelia Marshall ’20, and faculty member John Russell ’88.

The objectives of this Round Square service project would be to develop leadership and team work, experience different cultures and environments, and perform community service. Although these were indeed the written objectives, they served as doorways to a truly authentic experience that would impact our lives as much as it would the lives of the people in a small Ecuadorian fishing community with whom we would live for two weeks. Our project went beyond the average sights and sounds of educational tourism and instead landed us in a shared standard of living with our hosts and a simplicity of life that was utterly novel for us but also beckoned us to connect more closely with them.

A four-hour bus ride up the coast from Guayaquil is Puerto Rico, but you won’t find this little fishing village on most maps. Many of the hombres are out at sea making their living in the fishing industry, sometimes 21 days at a time. In the village next to the small elementary school are the beginnings of an early learning center for infants and toddlers. Such a facility will allow mothers the chance to advance their own educations or engage in entrepreneurship. It’s been no secret for the past few decades that as these options arise for women around the world, so does their status.

We began work on the early learning center the next day. The construction phase of the project immediately pushed collaboration across languages, cultures, and age groups. Concrete and bamboo were our primary building materials for the early learning center. Natasha Nash ’19 led the charge on the construction and painting of a desk-sized locomotive that children would be able to crawl through and climb on in 26

BLUE & WHITE MAGAZINE – 2018

the playroom. There were no machines—none—too expensive. During one workday, students, through trial and error, found the most efficient way to make a lot of concrete in a limited amount of time by rotating shovel teams in and out. Divided into four groups, students pushed themselves to mix (this according to my notes) 30 wheelbarrows of sand, 42 wheelbarrows of gravel, and 30 bags of cement (each bag was 70 lbs). This makes concrete.

But wait, there’s more. They added some water to make it heavier and harder to mix. Gallons and gallons were needed to finally lay the floor of the small building. Although satisfying, the work was enough to make the very word, concrete, a curse word among the students, synonymous with the most miserable blend of sweat, dust, and irksome back pain.

After a morning of this, the novelty of that warm and fuzzy word “service” faded quickly and was replaced with more authentic emotions, like fatigue and irritability. Then cynicism and group tension. Some students began to shut down; ahh, the very conditions experiential educators look for in order to teach a deeper level of teamwork and leadership. As an adult leader on this project, though, I don’t intervene. I made no authoritative demands for courageous teamwork or glittery chants of encouragement to not give up. Rather, the student leader and deputy leader of the group had to contend with the discord. Each student leader, a different one each day, was subtly backed by an adult leader who, although quiet, remained highly tuned-in. In these moments, student leaders learned to risk social status, navigated the exhausted angst of a group, diluted tension, and motivated peers in a positive direction. You can imagine how tough that might have been, yet also how it felt when they realized they could do it.

After a hard day’s work, it was time to shower. This entailed filling up a bucket, since a bucket was all we got, then being sure to inspect the bamboo shower stall for unwanted crawly creatures. If it was after dinner, we always took our headlamps with us. This is another part of our shared standard of living and a practice of simplicity, but after a day of work like that, most any kind of shower is a rebirth and a blessing.

Our meals were also simple but nutritious. In the three-sided kitchen of our bunkhouse, six mothers from the community prepared our meals

from scratch. Remember, no machines. Adventures of a Large Format Photographer

For my second trip to Panama, I knew I wanted to do something special, and decided to bring my vintage 4x5 large format camera, hoping to capture shots of some of the amazing things I had seen the previous year. I had a lot of concerns, however, about bringing the equipment on the trip and to the jungle. X-rays are very bad for camera film, and I wasn’t sure if Customs even allowed film!

Thankfully, I was able to hand-check the film and avoid x-ray exposure.

To get the shot set-up, loading the film holders is a herculean task, requiring total darkness. I used a portable darkroom tent, in which you stick your arms through the sleeves and load the film completely by feel. My first shot was taken at Fort San Lorenzo, which sits high above the mouth of the Chagres River. It was my first time using the camera, so I was really hoping it would work. After setting up the tripod, I took a light reading, pulled out the dark slide, draped the dark cloth over my head, focused the image on the ground glass, fired the shutter release cable, and took my first picture.

Subsequent shots were taken at the Embera Village, the Atelopus pool/waterfall at Cocobolo, and a tiny waterfall near base camp at Cocobolo. The most challenging shot by far was at the Atelopus pool, due to the long and muddy hike along steep slopes and across rocky rivers, as well as the uneven terrain to set-up the camera.

Ultimately, my experience using this equipment in Panama was life-changing. Some of the areas I photographed are ones that very few people have ever seen. Thankfully, the photos turned out quite well, so it was totally worth the challenge. I look forward to continuing my adventures with large format photography!

Representing Marvelwood at the Model UN

Each year, Marvelwood students attend the

Model United Nations at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut. The conference is a fourday event that features over 1,800 high school student delegates from 80 schools from all over the country and around the world, including: China, Spain, Brazil, Vietnam, Turkey, Russia, Mexico, and the Dominican Republic. At the eighteenth annual YMUN Conference last January, the opening ceremony keynote speaker was Blair Miller, co-founder of BlueOrange Sustainable Capital, an emerging markets sustainable investment fund, and Chase Sova, Director of Public Policy and Research for World Food Program USA, a charity that fights hunger worldwide.

The Marvelwood delegation to YMUN XVIII was comprised of students from my Advanced Placement U.S. History course: Justin Decoteau ’19, Quinn Downie ’19, Marcella Dumitrascu ’19, Htoo Gay ’19, Vera Hudson ’19, Hui Yu Koh ’19, Lawrence Mashburn ’19, Aidan Mulvihill ’19, Elijah Ring ’19, Alexander Sanchez ’19, Lillian Steinmayer ’19, Avante Walker ’19, and Nathan Winter ’19, as well as Guy Kennedy ’18, Max Branson ’18, Lauren Greiner ’18, Natasha Nash ’19, and Victoria Sanchez ’18.

Victoria Sanchez, making her fourth appearance at the YMUN, and Quinn Downie led the group as Co-Head Delegates, which represented the countries of Chile and Chad, as well as committees dealing with historical events such as the Oslo Accords of 1993.

Weeks before the conference, students conduct research about their assigned countries, and write and submit position papers about various international topics to the YMUN moderators. During the conference sessions, delegates speak on topics including global warming, terrorism, women’s rights, drones, and governmental corruption. Public speaking and coalition building are important aspects of the conference.

In addition, delegates are invited to explore Yale University and New Haven, including tours of the university, visiting classes, or having lunch

with professors. The Peabody Science Museum, Center for British Art, and Yale University Museum of Art were all within a short walking distance of the hotel. The Conference dance is always a highlight for the delegates.

The Conference is an incredibly valuable opportunity for our students to learn how the United Nations functions, and the workings of parliamentary procedure, as well as to meet and work with other students from all parts of the globe. I am extremely proud of our dedicated and talented delegates!

The Pterodactyl Cup is a year-long competition involving every member of the Marvelwood community. House teams compete and earn points throughout the school year to become the Guardians of the Cup. • All members of the Marvelwood Community are sorted into one of four houses: Doss, Everett, Sanchez, and West. The Houses are named for Marvelwood’s four longest-serving faculty members: Laurie Doss, Blythe Everett P’14, ’16, Glenn Sanchez P’18, ’19, and Pam West, all of whom began their exemplary Marvelwood careers on the Cornwall campus and have continued

to shape and influence the School through their dedication, creativity, and enthusiasm.

The performing arts have always been a vital part of the Marvelwood experience.

Husband and wife team Dennis White and Misty Jordan have coordinated the theater program for over twelve years. As Performing Arts Department Chair, Misty has staged a wide variety of plays and musicals, with Dennis managing the technical aspects of the productions. “It’s been very rewarding to see the kids so excited about learning every aspect of theatre,” says Misty. The groups are always a wonderful, enthusiastic mix of experienced theatre kids and complete novices. Each and every production is unique and memorable, allowing students the full gamut of theatrical experience. Misty and Dennis have inspired many Marvelwood students to discover and pursue their theatrical passions.

Pterodactyl Update

Marvelwood had another great campaign in 2017-18, with two teams taking home the Hudson Valley Athletic League crown.

The rugged Wrestling team was outstanding in their winter championship run, beating Storm King and Woodhall handily to claim their first HVAL title since 2013.

The Lacrosse championship was a little longer in the making. The 2018 championship was the program’s first HVAL trophy and their first hardware since the 2004 New England Championship team. With all the action that the Pterodactyl athletes competed in, the highlights for the school year were vast.

As we returned from summer break and transitioned into the fall 2017 season, the boys and girls in blue got back to it quickly, looking to improve on a strong 2016. The 2017 version was another blue-collar style, hard-working season, during which the Boys Varsity Soccer and Boys Cross Country teams starred for Marvelwood.

Boys Soccer was a lethal force on the field, scoring 82 goals in just 18 games, with 41 of them coming from All State striker Justin Decoteau ’19. Justin now stands as the all-time scoring leader in Marvelwood boys soccer history, with 77 goals.

While Justin led the line, fellow captain Jack Flaherty ’18 provided fluidity and creativity in the midfield, setting up 25 goals (also a school record) and leading his team to the HVAL championship game in his final performance.

While Marvelwood lost the final game to the very strong Storm King side, they fought admirably and had an epic victory over Poughkeepsie Day School in the semifinal, which was won 3-2 on penalty kicks after 100 minutes of 1-1 soccer. Isaac “Zack” Plotnick ’18 was a pivotal piece in this game as the third captain and goalie; he made two huge saves in the PKs and also converted one of the three winning spot kicks!

The Boys Cross Country team was strong in 2016 and pushed even further in the 2017 fall edition. Led

by captains Jared Ganeles ’18 and Nathan Winter ’19, the runners won the Faith Christian Invitational to start the season and our own Marvelwood Invitational just before the HVAL Championship race in October. In that final race of the season, the boys in blue and white ran their hearts out. Marvelwood’s top runner, Roberto Soler-Lopez ’18, led a charge against four-time defending champions, Storm King, who saw the Pter give them all they could handle. Marvelwood finished as runners-up, four points behind the champions.

As the leaves fell off and the days got shorter, the athletes on Skiff Mountain moved indoors for basketball and wrestling and to the slopes for skiing. The Boys Basketball team turned the corner in 2017-18, winning 11 games, reaching the HVAL championship game, and earning an invitation to the New England tournament. Eron Wilson ’18 and Justin Decoteau ’19 captained the team and Jack Flaherty ’18 and Avante Walker ’19 were reminiscent of the twin towers from San Antonio, ripping down rebounds and putting up massive scorelines. Avante tied the school record for points in a game with 42 in a game against Darrow School in January. Jack was named to the All New England team, as voted on by the coaches.

On the girls’ side, Hannah Records ’19 was a revelation on the basketball court last winter. She led her lady ’Dactyls with monster performance after monster performance. She added her name to the record boards in the gym by putting up 36 points against Faith Christian Academy in late January and posted 27 rebounds twice this season in matchups against Darrow and Faith Christian. She was also a force on defense and broke the single season record for blocks with 60. With one more year to go for Hannah, I see a few more records falling to this powerhouse in 2019.

On the mats, the wrestlers were ferocious. With the outgoing leadership of Simon Winter ’17 and Chris Lane ’17, who were All New England caliber wrestlers, it was time for the youth to step up. Returning New England finalist, and younger brother of Simon, Nathan Winter ’19 took on a captain role along with his cross country counterpart, Jared Ganeles ’18. Under their leadership, the wrestling squad quickly learned how to compete at the highest level. The early part of the season was a grind, with the team getting thrown into some tough matches and tournaments. This experience was key to their championship run once HVAL matches began.

When we first met up with Storm King and Woodhall, our first-year wrestlers already had 10-15 matches under their belt. The opponents had a different approach to development, as their encounter with the Pterodactyls in January was the start of their competitive season.

The difference in quality and experience was evident as Marvelwood dominated the first HVAL tri-meet. Injuries and illnesses hit the boys in blue hard for the second of three meets, and they suffered a setback, losing to Storm King. Once the squad was back to full strength and in front of their home crowd, it was again no contest as Marvelwood dismantled Storm King, 45-26, and Woodhall, 51-0, in a display of grit and determination that would not be denied. It was the squad’s first banner since the 2013 team, which was led by Honorable Mention All American Raymond “Duke” Sherwood ’13.

Since Duke’s epic campaign in 2012-13, Marvelwood has excelled individually on the New England and national stage. Including this past season, there have been 15 state placewinners and seven New England Placewinners. This year was no different, as Nathan Winter ’19 returned to the state and New England finals for the second consecutive year, this time up two weight classes at 120 pounds. Nathan again qualified for the Prep National Championships at Lehigh University and was one of the top 24 wrestlers in the nation for the second consecutive year. He posted three new season and career school records, with 35 wins, 25 pins, and now 96 career wins. Denzil Fearon ’21 finished off an impressive freshman season with a fifth place finish at the state championships.

The spring was marked by stellar performances from some historically strong teams. The most evident was the Lacrosse program, which dominated the ’90s and early 2000s by winning seven New England championships, the latest being in 2004. Over the years, lacrosse numbers dwindled as Marvelwood began offering more sports. Although the team remained and maintained many great players in the late 2000s and over the past few years, many of the usual lacrosse athletes tried their hand at new challenges in other arenas. Our 2018 season was a return to form for the Marvelwood lacrosse team.

With 20+ players and a revamped defense, Marvelwood, now led by head coach Chris Becker, showed a new

sense of camaraderie and determination. The chemistry showed on the field as the team posted a perfect 8-0 HVAL record, winning the championship for the first time! In the two playoff games, Marvelwood outscored their opponents 29-2! In the semifinal, new goalie James Duffy ’20 put together a brilliant performance, along with the defensive line of David Rednick ’19, Jay Sheehan ’19, and Ryan Cameron ’19, to pitch a shutout, 13-0, over Darrow. In the final against #2 seed Woodhall, who had given Marvelwood all they could handle in their previous game, a 7-6 Pterodactyl win, the team in blue knew they had to be at their best. Becker, along with coaching legend and assistant coach Glenn Sanchez, galvanized the squad to peak at the right time. Did they ever, as the Woodhall Phoenix were no match for Marvelwood’s intensity. From the first whistle, Marvelwood moved the ball efficiently and got everyone involved to keep the Phoenix defense swiveling back and forth. This opened up scorers, and captain Nathan Winter ’19 ran riot as the offensive catalyst, setting a new school record with eight assists. Fellow captain Alex Sanchez ’19, son of Glenn, and freshman sensation Devin Sierra ’21 each had five goals in the game to lead the team to victory and the banner.

The Boys and Girls Tennis teams also had fantastic seasons. The girls were tight with their league rival Oakwood Friends all season. They made the most of their opportunities in the league semifinals, winning 4-3 to move on to the championship match with perennial champions Storm King. The girls dropped that match but were very proud of the distance they were able to go in the most important time of the season.

Boys Tennis was very strong this spring, putting up a 10-2 record overall and 9-1 HVAL record. Their top three singles players, Henok Tangey ’21 (Round Square exchange student from St. Phillips College in Australia), Isaac “Zack” Plotnick ’18, and Roberto Soler-Lopez ’18, were a brutal combination for opposing coaches and players to deal with. No matter if they had a star at #1 singles, the depth of Marvelwood’s lineup led them through the season to ten victories and the HVAL championship game. Our boys in blue and white met the end of their season against Storm King, who had a stacked international lineup. It was still a triumph of a season, and Isaac “Zack” Plotnick finished his illustrious tennis career on a high, earning the all-time record for wins with 48.

It was a superb year, with all the athletes showing the utmost respect for their opponents while producing a fire and determination that is the trademark of the teams from the north side of Kent, Connecticut. We’re proud of our athletes, who continually embrace the ideals of Marvelwood Athletics.

Lacrosse: A Marvelwood Tradition

Lacrosse has been an integral part of The Marvelwood

School since its founding. This popular sport has its origins in the tribal games of the Native Americans in the northeast United States and Canada, where they were used as a ceremonial ritual, a kind of symbolic warfare, to give thanks to The Creator. Games would last two to three days from sunup to sundown, with teams of 100 to 1,000 men on fields that were 1,600 feet to two miles long. The French adopted a version of their own, calling it La Crosse (the stick), from which William George Beers started the Montreal Lacrosse Club in 1856.

One hundred years after Beers, known as the father of modern lacrosse, started the MLC, Robert Bodkin founded The Marvelwood School and brought lacrosse to Cornwall, a small town in CT where Marvelwood’s original campus was.

Lacrosse has been a popular prep school sport around New England, and in the early years of Marvelwood, the program proved fruitful. It took just six seasons for the Marvelwood lacrosse team to achieve prominence on the New England stage, winning the Division 2 championship in 1965. As the sport became more popular, the New England lacrosse governing body added a Division 3 grouping for smaller schools such as Marvelwood. In 1967, Marvelwood won the Division 3 championship. The school was then subsequently promoted back up to Division 2. Under Robert Bodkin’s coaching and leadership, they dominated their league and won another Division 2 championship in 1970.

As the School in Cornwall grew, new athletics options were added; at the same time, lacrosse programs around New England became increasingly competitive. It would be another 21 years before the 36

Pterodactyl lacrosse team would taste glory again, but once they did, they never looked back. In 1991, Coach Hugh Cheney led the program to its first Division 3 New England Championship in two decades and positioned the program to be one of the top prep teams in New England for the better part of the decade. A generation of Marvelwood players knew nothing but success, as the team won the Division 3 championship every year from 1991 through 1995 and again in 1997.

Over the years, players came and went, but the outcome remained the same, as opposing teams were no match for the Marvelwood firepower. In an epic display against Hamden Hall in May 1992, Dave Budge ’92 registered one of the greatest single performances for the blue and white, and quite possibly all-time for New England lacrosse, scoring an improbable 15 goals and

16 points in a high-scoring affair with the larger school opponent. Another massive contributor to the cause in the ’90s came from the school’s all-time assist leader, Gus Kellogg ’95, who registered 67 assists from 1992-95, 46 of them coming in the 1994 championship season.

A young attack-minded coach, Glenn Sanchez P’18, ’19, joined Hugh Cheney and subsequently took over the team with Henry Woodward.

As the century came to a close, Marvelwood continued to produce great players on the New England lacrosse scene but could not get over the hump to secure another New England championship. The strength of the squad shifted a bit in the 2000s, and it was the goalies who brought home the accolades for the team on Skiff Mountain. Pete Farrell ’04 came to Marvelwood in the fall of 2002 from Falmouth, MA and

immediately showed off his athletic prowess as a key contributor to the varsity soccer and basketball teams.

Once the snow melted and the fields were playable, Pete showed his most pronounced talent in goal on the lacrosse field. While the goals might not have come easily in the 2003 season, Marvelwood was always in the game because of Pete’s cat-like reflexes and command of the defensive box. Marvelwood came up just short of the Division 3 championship that season, with The Harvey School being the new dynasty for the early 2000s in the small school arena.

In the 2004 season, a young man from Rhode Island joined the team whose father, Lucian Forbes ’64, had played under Robert Bodkin. Iain Forbes ’05 was also a skilled athlete, but no Marvelwood sports fan truly knew what they were in for in the 2004 and 2005 seasons. With the already stout defense in front of New England’s best goalie, Pete Farrell, Iain gave the Pterodactyls the teeth they needed on offense. Game after game, Iain was a one-man wrecking crew, scoring an incredible 72 goals in the season and leading the squad to the Division 3 New England championship in May of 2004. After another worldly performance in 2004, no one could have imagined that Iain would amplify in 2005, but he went on to score another 83 goals, finishing his career as the school’s all-time scoring leader at 155 goals. Had a few calls gone our way in the 2005 championship game against Harvey, we may now be talking about back-to-back championships in the mid-2000s.

As the next decade transpired, the constant point of strength on the field for Marvelwood was the goalie position. Each year, Marvelwood reloaded with a talented athlete as the back stop. The team again went through a bit of a drought but always seemed to stay in the game due to acrobatic saves from their plethora of defensive talent. As Coach Sanchez moved on from the program in 2012 and Zach Maizel ’04 took over for him in 2013, good goalie play continued, but it was Coach Kane Szydlowski’s introduction to the program in 2016 that got the offense motivated. Along with his hard-hitting assistant coach, Christian Becker, Szydlowski laid the groundwork that led to the success of the 2018 team.

Szydlowski moved on from Marvelwood and the reigns were handed to Christian Becker, who had fallen in love with the sport at an early age in Norwalk, CT, which is smack dab in the middle of Fairfield County, one of the most intensely competitive lacrosse areas in the country. The FCIAC has perennially produced nationally-ranked and champion teams, including Darien, New Canaan, Greenwich, and Ridgefield, which molded Coach Becker with game after game of tremendous competition. He brought this knowledge and competitive fire to Skiff Mountain and instilled it in his players as they made their championship run in 2018.

The 2018 team was led by offensive spark plugs Nathan Winter ’19 and Alex Sanchez ’19, but it was the renewed commitment to defense that Becker emphasized. Another important piece was an elevated

level of competitive drive that Becker expected from his ranks. With excellent chemistry on the squad and a continuously evolving knowledge of the game, our season’s toughest opponent in the league, Woodhall School, was no match for the ferocious attack that Marvelwood came at them with in the championship game. Woodhall lost by a wide margin of 16-2 to our players in blue. The goalie position again became a focal point for Marvelwood, as Edward Duffy ’20 stepped between the pipes all season for the first time and gave up just two goals in the final two games to help the championship cause.

The connections from this team to past teams was evident. Coach Becker and Coach Sanchez, who stepped back into the program, made sure to keep the sense of history and legacy at the forefront of their minds. Edward’s father, Patrick Duffy ’80, had played for Marvelwood under Coach Peter O’Neill, and James Payne ’84, the father of Mason Payne ’21, played for the legendary Hugh Cheney. While Mason was new to the sport and did not feature as prominently as Edward for the Pterodactyls, his presence as a legacy was a vital piece of the success and commitment of this highly successful team.

The most noticeable connection to the past in the 2018 championship team was the Sanchez family.

When Glenn Sanchez stepped away after 18 years and four New England Championships at the helm, his legacy was cemented as the longest tenured and most successful lacrosse coach in Marvelwood history.

We all knew, however, that he wouldn’t stay away for long. Growing up in the hotbed of lacrosse on Long Island, Glenn starred for Smithtown West before taking his talents to Yale University, after which he came to Marvelwood and worked with Hugh Cheney, to mold a New England lacrosse powerhouse. Glenn took over the program in 1994. When his son, Alexander, was born in 2001, we all knew the young man would have a lacrosse stick in his hand soon enough. Fast forward to 2015 and Alex’s freshman year at Marvelwood. Having come up through the local youth lacrosse league, Alex joined the Marvelwood team, showing that he inherited his father’s attacking prowess. Glenn rejoined the coaching staff, bringing his infectious and fun-loving energy to the team.

The success of the 2018 lacrosse team was a combination of skill, commitment, competitive fire, and a sense of history and legacy. From father to son, from coach to coach, and from coach to player, this sport has always been a major part of the Marvelwood story and has been proudly handed down from generation to generation. On May 16, 2018, another chapter was added to our storied history. A full hour-and-a-half before the championship game, Coach Becker gathered the team in the locker room and told them: “Do your job, work like you’ve never worked before—let’s get this win!” I think that’s something Robert Bodkin would have smiled down on, seeing that the program he began 60 years ago is still thriving.

It’s always such an honor to welcome alumni back to campus to celebrate their graduations from Marvelwood, be it decades ago in Cornwall or just a few years ago in Kent. As is tradition, our most senior alumni attending Reunion, Everett Post ’60, carried the Marvelwood flag in our annual Parade of Classes. Stephen Myers ’68, who returned for his 50th Reunion, rang the Piper Victory Bell at the Official Welcome. Several members of the Class of 1978 returned with their families to celebrate their 40th Reunion, and other special classes had excellent showings! During the Official Welcome, Board of Trustees Chair Timothy Carpenter ’71 announced the retirement of Marvelwood’s Sixth Head of School, Arthur F. Goodearl, Jr., and thanked him for his years of service and dedication to the School. Veteran faculty member and senior administrator Blythe Everett P’14, ’16 was welcomed as the Interim Head of School.

Reunion attendees were given the opportunity to ‘go back to class.’ Veteran faculty member Glenn Sanchez P’18, ’19 taught a version of his wildly popular Harry Potter and Philosophy class, which he developed a few years ago with the help of his children, Alex ’19 and Victoria ’18, who share their father’s fascination with the Harry Potter series. At the annual Reunion dinner, Glenn’s children and wife, Sarah Marshall, surprised him with a cake for his 50th birthday. Glenn has been at Marvelwood for over half his life, and he continues to engage students, families, and alumni with his infectious enthusiasm, energy, and passion for all things Marvelwood!

1980s Stephen Forneris ’86

1970s Robert Beeman ’78 With the approach of his 40th Reunion last spring, Robert shared a small cache of photographs he had recently discovered. The 1977 tennis team figures prominently in the 200 photographs Robert digitized, including individual photos of Cathy Place ’77, Ted Christie ’77, and Gary Lanza ’77. Robert also came across negatives from the 1977-1978 yearbook, for which he was staff editor, and from a photography class he took with Peter Barrett.

Robert’s photos will be added to the School archives, which is currently being organized into a new platform and will be shared with the alumni community in 2019.

Philip Spanos ’78 Philip also attended his 40th Reunion at Marvelwood in June with his wife, Sandra. They traveled all the way from their home in Mitchell, South Dakota, near the famous Corn Palace. Philip and Howard enjoyed looking through old yearbooks and sharing fond memories of Cornwall in the late 1970s.

Stephen is a partner with Perkins Eastman, a global architecture firm. He shares his time between New York and Ecuador, where he manages Perkins Eastman’s Guayaquil office. Working in the Latin American market gives him a unique perspective for all of his projects.

Stephen was heavily involved in the formation of the Code and Safety for the Americas (CASA) Act, a Congressional initiative to bring building codes and standards to Latin America, and also served as vice-chair of the Campaign for Safe Buildings, an organization dedicated to providing safe structures in developing nations. Currently, Stephen is lead architect on a major project under construction at Providence College: a Men’s Division I College Basketball training center.

Recently, Stephen designed a sculpture for the College based on the School’s logo, which was installed in 2017.

Howard attended his 40th Reunion in June with his wife, Jennifer, and their two children, Grace (12) and Lily (9).

The girls, avid lacrosse players, brought their sticks and enjoyed throwing balls with Glenn Sanchez P’18, ’19. This was Howard’s first time back to Marvelwood in many years. The family lives in Montauk, NY on the east end of Long Island.

skills consulting firm, Amy continues to enjoy helping professionals improve the way they communicate with the world. Brian, Amy’s husband of 15 years, is pursuing a new career in culinary arts and restaurant ownership.

Stay tuned for news on that front! Last summer, Amy and Brian’s two boys, Charlie (12) and Oliver (9), enjoyed a seven week sleep-away camp in beautiful and rural Pennsylvania, a nice respite from life in the Big Apple.

2000s Richard ‘Marley’ Nelson ’00 Marley lives in Brooklyn with his dog, Groot. They like to take long walks around their neighborhood. When they can get out of the city, Marley and Groot enjoy going to the beach, hiking, and visiting Marley’s mother at Penn State. Be sure to look for Groot cruising around New York City!

Choli Fera Austin ’93 Choli lives in Boulder, Colorado, with her husband, John, who owns an eBay business. Choli has been a hair stylist for over 20 years and owns a boutique salon called Studio Swã. Choli and Brian have two children: Parker, a high school freshman, and Constantine, a 3rd grader.

Choli reports that Constantine is an ‘excellent competitive swimmer,’ and that Parker played on her high school’s varsity volleyball team. The family enjoys skiing and try to go as often as possible. They have a Cavalier King Charles terrier, who often accompanies Choli to work at the salon.

Jose Carreras ’95 Jose works at the Ivorypress Art Gallery in Madrid, Spain, where he handles curating and sales. He reports that he can’t believe that he gets paid for doing what he loves.

Josechu and his wife, Virginia, have two children: Valeria (7) and Martina (3). Josechu gives his best to former faculty member Mike Fitzgerald, whose artwork he has on display in his living room.

Lawson Whitesides III ’98 Lawson lives in Dallas, TX, where he works for State Farm Insurance. Recently, he began pursuing an MBA at Southern Methodist University’s Cox School of Business.

Alyssa Orlow Smith ’99 Alyssa and her husband, Robert, welcomed their second child, Jade, on Valentine’s Day 2018. Jade’s big brother, Justin, will be two in January. The family lives in Stamford, CT.

Will Strozier had a very busy travel schedule this year.

After spending time on the island of St. Lucia, he traveled to Africa, where his adventures included climbing Mount Kilimanjaro and touring Serengeti National Park. Having begun his professional career in real estate development, in 2010 Will co-founded the New York-based hospitality group, NIEUW. Today, he is the co-owner of three restaurants: Proper West and Manhattan Proper, both in New York City, and Proper Twenty-One, in Washington, D.C. Will has hosted a number of Marvelwood events at his establishments, including one last February. We hope you’ll make plans to join us at Manhattan Proper on February 6th, 2019.

Kongo Kawakita ’96 Kongo works in advertising in Japan. His main account is Iichiko, a popular Japanese liquor, for which he organizes television ads and plans various events. Kongo was especially excited to host a booth at Fuji Rock Festival, the largest festival of its type in Japan. Kongo and his wife, Ayana, have two children: Ichiro (5) and Takahashi (2).

He hopes to visit Marvelwood in the near future.

Yasemin Gunduz ’07 Yasemin visited Kent in August with Jade Brown ’08. She was happy to reconnect with Glenn Sanchez P’18, ’19, David Mogle ’09, Mike Cuff, Bing Bingham, Katherine Almquist, Sue Ellen Bohning, and Caitlin Lynch P’13.

Yasemin graduated from Pace University in 2011 with a degree in Business Economics. She is currently a talent acquisition partner for Johnson & Johnson in Istanbul, Turkey.

Alex was recently named Head Tennis Coach and Head Cross Country Coach at Hollins University in Virginia. Previously, Alex was Head Tennis Coach at Wesleyan College in Macon, Georgia. During his tenure at Wesleyan, the team earned the 2017 USA South Conference Sportsmanship Award, the 2017 ITA Regional Community Service and Outreach Award, the ITA AllAcademic Team Award, and the Wesleyan College Team GPA Award. Seven of the players he coached earned ITA All-Academic status. While at Wesleyan, Alex was also Head Cross Country Coach and was responsible for bringing the program back to the School following a fouryear hiatus. Alex is a 2008 graduate of Springfield College and earned a B.S. in General Studies with a Minor in Business Management and a Concentration in Recreation Management. Alex was a four-year member of the Pride tennis team while completing his undergraduate work.

Ryan married Laisa in July, with classmate Joshua Hammond ’01 and former advisor Mike Everett P’14, ’16 in attendance. Ryan reports that Josh played a big part in planning the proposal as well as the wedding, and he is grateful to Mike Everett for being a mentor and a friend since his days at Marvelwood. Ryan works at the biotechnology product development company ThermoFisher Scientific, where he is a senior site specialist focusing on supply/demand planning, cancer research, and biotechnology work. To current students, Ryan offers this advice: “Make the most out of your time at Marvelwood and form as many connections as possible. Many of your teachers and peers are people who will be by your side well beyond your student days.”

Jade Brown ’08 Jade graduated from Florida Southern College with a degree in Psychology. In 2013, she moved to Orlando, FL and worked in the hospitality and tourism industry.

Jade moved back to her hometown of Queens, NY in 2016 and currently works for Madison Square Garden in marketing and promotions. Jade attended her 10 year reunion in June and enjoyed reconnecting with former classmates and teachers, including veteran faculty member Pam West.

Christina welcomed daughter Reality Suzette Patterson on January 2nd, 2018. After six years in restaurant management, Christina is taking a leave of absence and is thrilled to be able to spend time with her daughter.

Taylor graduated from Roger Williams University in May with a degree in Engineering. Over the summer, he was a construction manager for Cricket Valley Energy near his home in Dover Plains, NY. In January, he is excited to begin a new job at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in New Hampshire, where he will oversee the construction of nuclear submarines for the U.S. Navy.

Brian reports that he is fulfilling his lifelong dream of working at Disney World; he is “very appreciative of the dedicated and caring teachers and faculty at Marvelwood who assisted me on this journey and made a profound impact on my life.”

Lucas O’Malley ’11 Science Department Chair Laurie Doss was thrilled to have Lucas participate in the Panama Trip last February as an alumni chaperone. Having gone on the trip twice while he was a student at Marvelwood, Lucas enjoyed the opportunity to share his enthusiasm for the adventure and commitment to conservation with current students. He lives in New Rochelle, NY, and works in the culinary field.

Taking a year off from school, Teddy worked in sales for a dental office. She is currently at Lynn University in Florida, finishing a degree in Cyber Security. She expects to graduate in 2019.

Spencer graduated from Skidmore College in May 2018 with a degree in Business Management. Currently, he is participating in the Praxis Apprenticeship Program and hopes to obtain a job at a high-growth startup. He is also working on a personal website, SpencerLowry.com, which will feature blog posts, book reviews, and projects.

Sabrina graduated from St. Lawrence University in May, where she majored in Political Science and minored in Fine Arts. She recently moved to California and is looking for work with an NGO, hoping to focus on education policy for either the United States or Canadian government. In December 2017, Sabrina became engaged and is planning to get married in Maine.

Kyle Rowe-Zarba ’13 After tirelessly knocking on doors, Kyle finally got his break in the music industry. Working for the United Talent Agency in the music division, he is an assistant to two agents on an indie and alternative pop/rock team.

Nicole Kennedy ’14 Nicole graduated from Salve Regina College in May 2018 with a degree in Psychology. In September, she began graduate school at Eastern Nazarene College in Boston, where she is working toward a degree in Marriage and Family Counseling. Nicole is the daughter of veteran faculty member and Director of Counseling, Dr. John Kennedy. Her sister Jade ’22 is currently a freshman at Marvelwood, and brother Guy ’18 is a freshman at Manhattan College.

Blake Raleigh ’14 Blake attended the Marvelwood Renovation Open House in September, where he enjoyed connecting with faculty and seeing the newly refurbished facilities. Blake lives in New Canaan, CT and works at Half Full Brewery in Stamford. He says that he would like to open his own brewery one day.

Maggie Everett ’16 Maggie is a junior at Roger Williams University in Bristol, RI, where she is majoring in Performing Arts with a concentration in Theatre and Music and minoring in Writing. This past spring, she received “Highest Academic Achievement” recognition for carrying the highest GPA in the Theatre program. Last year, she was President of the University’s Stage Club. In June, Maggie performed in Down the Mountain and Across the Stream as part of the RWU Summer Playhouse series. She also built the sets

and did the lighting for the project. Maggie is currently finishing up a semester in London, where she has been immersed in the West End theatre scene and traveling throughout Great Britain and across Europe.

Erin Hussey ’16 Erin is a junior at Wesleyan University in Middletown, CT, where she is triple-majoring in English Literature, Government, and French Studies. As essay that Erin wrote on the theological dilemmas of revenge in Hamlet was awarded the Winchester First-Year Essay Prize, which recognizes the best scholarly essay written by a first-year student in an English course. Erin is News Editor for the Wesleyan Argus, the School’s student newspaper, as well as co-chair of the Wesleyan Democrats. Erin has remained active in the performing arts, working as an actress in student film productions, a costume designer, and a makeup artist. She is currently studying abroad at the Sorbonne in Paris, which, she reports, “is a dream come true.”

Tighe Mueller ’17 Tighe spent last summer working on a commercial fishing boat out of Kodiak, Alaska, where he battled the elements and thousands of pounds of ice to help bring in over 3,000 salmon. He is currently studying Accounting and Business at Fairfield University in Fairfield, CT.

David Schuftan ’17 David is in his second year at Washington University in St. Louis, where he is studying Biomedical Engineering.

As a freshman, he joined a research lab studying cardiomyocytes grown from induced pluripotent stem cells. David reports that the college experience has been “fantastic, due in large part due to the preparation I received at Marvelwood.” Last summer, David continued doing research on stem cells and hydrogels at Washington University and enjoyed a family trip to Iceland.

Jonathan Matson ’17 Inspired by Marvelwood’s IT Director, Tim Smith, Jon is studying Computer Information Technology at Champlain College in Burlington, Vermont, where he is a sophomore. Jon reports that at Champlain, he is “involved in political activism for civil rights and religious freedom.” Last summer, Jon assisted faculty members Misty Jordan and Dennis White with a dance recital at Marvelwood for Starr’s Studio of Dance. Jon enjoyed staying in Summit Dorm for a long weekend with Jacob Girardin ’18 and Lauren Greiner ’18, who also helped with the event. In his free time, Jon plays Dungeons & Dragons with Jake Renkert ’16 and Josh Fusaro ’17.

On March 2, 2018, former English teacher Erin Timm Addis and her husband, Jeffrey, welcomed their second child, Lucy, who joins big brother Gideon. The family lives in Gladwyne, PA, where Erin is the Writing Center Director and an English teacher at The Baldwin School.

Peter Wade Former French teacher and aviation enthusiast Peter Wade is living in Boston and taking courses in Computer Science at Harvard University. Last summer, he met up with former colleagues Glenn Sanchez P’18, ’19 and David Mogle ’09 at an event near Fenway Park. He wishes everyone on the mountain well and plans to fly over campus at the earliest opportunity.

In Memoriam It is with deep sadness that we share the news of the loss of four members of the Marvelwood Community.

Jeffrey Andrew Totten ’84 1965-2018 Jeff Totten ’84 of Bridgewater, New Jersey, died June 28, 2018 after a courageous battle with cancer. At Marvelwood, Jeff ran cross country, raced with the ski team, and lived in Calhoun dorm. After graduating valedictorian from Marvelwood, Jeff earned a Bachelor of Science from Wittenberg University and went on to work in pharmaceutical sales. Jeff loved spending time with his sons Benjamin (19) and William (16) and was a dedicated participant in their Scouting and robotics competitions. An avid runner, Jeff competed in the Boston and New York marathons.

Charles E. Bowers ’94 1976-2018 Chuck Bowers III ’94, died on March 26, 2018. As a student at Marvelwood, Chuck discovered his passion for nature and photography and spent much of his free time hiking and exploring the beautiful Coltsfoot Valley and Northwest Corner backcountry with his camera.

Chuck worked as a vibrational sound practitioner at the Brighten Center and participated in the Refuge Recovery of Chester County, near his home in West Chester, PA. He was also involved with various conservation organizations, including the Brandywine Conservancy. In addition to his love of photography and painting, Chuck enjoyed hiking and driving cross country to Utah, where he was able to merge these essential interests. He was an avid Flyers fan and hockey lover, and he deeply loved his dogs.

Chuck is survived by his wife, Adriane; daughters, Lauren and Anneliese; stepdaughter, Ruby Monaghan; sisters, Susan Bartman and Beatrix Wimber; and his aunt and uncle, Marietta and Bob Ennamorato. Chuck’s daughter, Lauren, participated in one of the Marvelwood Panama trips, during which she worked on an independent photography project. Chuck was a generous supporter of Marvelwood science programs and was in regular communication with Laurie Doss, Science Department Chair, about his experiences and adventures as a lifelong nature lover.

Dr. Walter Reilly Kane 1926-2018 Dr. Walter Kane, 91, died peacefully on April 29, 2018 due to complications of heart failure.

Walter earned his bachelor’s degree from Stanford University, his master’s degree from the University of Washington, and his PhD from Harvard University. After a long and esteemed career in physics, including over 30 years at Brookhaven National Laboratory, Walter joined the Marvelwood faculty in September 2000. Interim Head of School Blythe Everett P’14, ’16 remembers the day that summer when Walter stopped by the School to drop off his resumé: “He virtually skipped into my office with a twinkle in his eye. He introduced himself, said he lived down the road apiece, and thought maybe there was a way for him to get involved with the School. First, he spoke of his maple sugaring work, and in my mind I began to imagine our students working with him in a new Community Service initiative. Then he added, almost as an afterthought, ‘I’ve also had an interesting career as a physicist,’ and proceeded to hand me one of the most fascinating and expansive resumés I’ve seen in my career.”

Having spent three years at Los Alamos National Laboratory involved in “activities related to national defense” and earning recognition for “ongoing work in the areas of nuclear safeguards, arms control, and nuclear nonproliferation” at Brookhaven National Lab, Walter was not your everyday teacher candidate! On a handshake deal that summer afternoon, he signed on at Marvelwood and quickly adapted to high school teaching. Over the next 16 years, Walter taught a variety of academic classes, including AP Physics, AP Chemistry, and Russian Language and Literature, and a self-designed elective course called Science, Society & the Environment, in which he endeavored to involve students in active discussion of topical science concerns and to educate them about their roles as stewards of the environment and of the Earth’s natural resources.

He was named Faculty Emeritus in 2017.

Lynn Cheney 1954-2018 Lynn Cheney, wife of former faculty member Hugh Cheney, died May 7, 2018, of complications from brain cancer. As a faculty family in Cornwall, the Cheneys were a welcoming focal point of the School community. The four Cheney children, Hope, Rusty, Teddy, and Tyler, grew up amongst the students, eating meals in the dining hall, cheering on their father’s teams, and attending plays and concerts. Hugh and Lynn lived in various dorms before building their own home just across the street from campus.

Lynn was an avid supporter of girls sports at Marvelwood and regularly played in the weekly Cornwall-community pick-up softballs games. Lynn touched the lives of many students and faculty at Marvelwood.

Walter always reflected happily on what he called his “twilight career” as a teacher, and he frequently expressed his deep and heartfelt appreciation for the opportunity to be a part of the Marvelwood family. He was admired and loved by both students and faculty for his endless wealth of information on myriad subjects, his boundless energy (he sometimes snowshoed up the hill to work!), his joyful sense of humor, and his kindness. His spirit and contribution to the School were recognized with the establishment of the Walter Kane Scientific Spirit award, first presented at graduation this past May. In August, a memorial service was held on the east lawn of the campus, overlooking the beautiful vista across the valley and the mountains that surround his beloved Skiff Mountain home.

Hugh wrote: It is difficult to convey the core of this extraordinary woman who endured two of life’s most daunting challenges. With unfailing grace and remarkable courage, Lynn shouldered the death of her son Rusty in 2015 and the glioblastoma that took her life on May 7, 2018. Lynn was not in a battle with her brain cancer. Rather, she treated it as an inconvenient intrusion in her life, and she simply adapted to it with resilience and without complaint. While these two events cast a shroud over the last three years of her life, there is so much more about her that defined how she lived.

Lynn’s death has unraveled some of the fabric that held her close-knit family together, and we feel diminished by her absence. In time, however, we trust that our memories of her remarkable life will eclipse grief. Her deep love of family and our love for her have made this a hard grief. We will miss her more than we can bear at times, yet we are thankful for this life she shared so generously with us all. Now may she be at peace, with no more hard challenges to conquer.

Since its founding, The Marvelwood School’s students have benefited from an educational environment that recognizes individual learning styles.
