SUPPORTING OUR STUDENTS

THERE ARE NO CRACKS AT MARVELWOOD
Our students don’t find the cracks to fall through because, at Marvelwood, we support them at every turn. We ensure that every student is known and has many trusted adults invested in their academic, social and emotional success. On a typical day, a student will attend 7 classes, enjoy meals in our Dining Hall, spend time with a coach, and connect with a dorm parent over the course of the evening. This system of constant contact creates a strong sense of community and support for our students and allows our faculty to quickly and proactively meet their needs.
NEVER ONE-SIZE-FITS-ALL
We adapt to the changing needs of adolescents, so learning and personal growth at Marvelwood is never one-size-fits-all. From the dorm to the classroom, we provide students with the knowledge, guidance, and support necessary to make informed, educated, and healthy life choices.

ACADEMIC & LEARNING SUPPORT
Marvelwood academics are thoughtfully and intentionally designed to be experiential, active, and hands-on. Students gain academic prowess and confidence through our dynamic curriculum that is constantly evolving – or, as we like to call it, ‘breathing’ – to meet the needs and interests of our learners. Our students drive our programming because we make it our business to really know and understand them. We listen to them and adapt our teaching and courses in response to their interests. We believe that this approach translates into the success we see in the classroom and contributes to the transformational learning experience that is characteristic of a Marvelwood education. More important than that, our students know that we believe in them and in the potential each and every one of them has to grow, meet challenges with determination, and make a meaningful impact on their world.
We are committed to supporting learning differences through a combination of intensively-targeted efforts to make even the most challenging college-preparatory curriculum accessible. Students are encouraged to participate actively in their studies, understand and embrace their learning style, and accept guidance from the professionals with whom they interact every day.
With each individual top of mind, support ranges from quick check-ins to intensive daily intervention personalized to address a wide range of academic challenges including those related to executive function, language-based learning, dyscalculia, dysgraphia, dyslexia, processing speed and working memory.
LEARNING SUPPORT
Marvelwood’s Clark Center for Learning Support offers families three different structured learning support options, from intense one-on-one support to self-guided review with instruction. Designed to transition students from strong support to independence over their time at Marvelwood, our tiered learning support programs help students with learning challenges experience academic success, increase self-confidence, and acquire strong learning and self-advocacy skills needed in college and beyond.
Our teachers have the training, experience, creativity, and patience to identify and remediate weaknesses in basic skills, to support a student’s efforts in content classes through the use of specific learning strategies to fill in the gaps which may present an impediment to success in college preparatory coursework.
ORTON-GILLINGHAM INTENSIVE
Daily 1:1 intensive language remediation using Orton-Gillingham (OG) approach for students with dyslexia and other language-based learning challenges. Includes a separate daily period of Strategies 2.
Orton-Gillingham is a diagnostic, prescriptive, and multi-sensory approach that varies widely from individual to individual and is used to support students with dyslexia and other language-based learning challenges. This structured, sequential, and cumulative approach was developed in the nineteenth century and is the forebearer of what is widely known as structured literacy today.
Our Director of Learning Support is a full-time faculty member and a Fellow in the Orton-Gillingham Academy. Our Orton-Gillingham faculty have completed at least the seventy-hour Associate Level training course. They are either certified by the Orton-Gillingham Academy or pursuing their practicum and certification.
STRATEGIES 1
1:1 tutorial support for students with learning differences and academic weaknesses in multiple areas. Students meet daily individually with their teacher to focus on academic support for content classes, preview and review of homework, use of assistive technology, and instruction/strengthening of reading, writing, organizational, and study skills.
STRATEGIES 2
Small-group support designed to improve and support students’ overall achievement as they move toward increased academic independence. Students meet daily with a teacher in groups of no more than four and focus on organizational and time management, metacognition and selfawareness, language and math skills, learning theories, and stress and anxiety management.
