Ode To Miller Dorm

I

Miller Dorm, ah! Miller Dorm, what memories I'll treasure.

The hours I've spent within your walls, and each an hour of pleasure!

Arriving prompt for study hall I'd find each student waiting.

Books all opened on his desk and him anticipating Joyful hours of solid study, silent contemplation Of calculus, geometry, the history of our nation.

Throughout the dorm a silence fell at thirty after seven; To Miller men. the study hall was nothing short of Heaven.

Occasionally, perhaps. I'd hear some Mozart or some Brahms.

For Miller men are sensitive to music's soothing charms.

And once or twice some restless lad might hustle out his cello And play a hunting melody to make us all feel mellow.

At nine fifteen I'd make the call. "How study hall is finished!"

But these keen students would not budge, their zeal was undiminished.

"Oh, let us study longer, sir! ' was their eternal cheer, "We have no need of break tonight, we'd rather stay right here!"

But I insisted, as was right, they put their books away.

And get themselves outside a while to get fresh air and play.

And so they went, good trusty lads, to catch the evening breeze.

And never ever went anywhere near Calhoun or Trustees.

They'd walk the courtyard lost in thought, or deep in conversation.

Talking of philosophy or ecological preservation.

And when the clock had wound its way to fifteen short of ten, I'd make my own way slowly back to Miller Dorm again.

And there they'd all be waiting. "Oh, Mr. King!" they'd crow, "We wondered where you'd got to - you're rather late, you know. " And then the toothbrush race would start, as every student sped To be the first to clean his teeth and put himself to bed.

I'd try to make them stay a while, to tell a joke orchat.

But Miller men are sterner stuff, and they 'd have none of that.

"To bed!" they cried, "We really must get ail lights out by ten.

Or we won't get our beauty sleep, and where would we be then?

Please, Mr. King, we want to take a five-mile run at dawn.

So please be sure to wake us up full early In the mom. " And so. pyjamas Ironed, and cocoa cups all clean.

These good lads clambered In their bunks to seek their sleep serene.

And as the distant churchtower chimed ten right on the snout.

Every Miller underclassman turned his room light out.

"Good night!" they'd sigh and start to count their dreamy jumping sheep.

And all night long they soundly spent in sweet contented sleep.

The seniors then would stretch and yawn, trusty lads and true, "To be quite honest, Mr. King, we are exhausted too.'

And so by fifteen after ten, every night without fail, A deep and restful silence in Miller would prevail.

Miller Dorm, ah! Miller Dorm, where gentlemen of learning Hever wandered after hours, kept midnight oil a-burning.

But studied through each study hall with concentrated power.

Then slept from ten through six next mom their eight allotted hours.

Karim, my friend. Emilio, Mike and Sidney too.

And Sylvain, crazy Canuck, I'll remember all of you.

Miller Dorm's an ugly dump, from floor to ceiling rafters.

But you guys decorated it with brotherhood and laughter.
