The idea that time is a relative matter is not always easy to keep in mind. To the school boy and girl school days are an eternity. To the freshman a forty-five minute period is a long, long period. To the seniors the few May days before gradua­ tion are never ending. Think then of a school term of twenty five years!

Twenty five years------twenty five school openings, twenty five graduations, twenty five fall Parents' Days, twenty five winters, twenty five--------Bob and Cornelia Bodkin have made these long rounds since Marvelwood was founded in 1957, and when they have completed their last Marvelwood chores in 1982, they will leave behind a 25 year record that is unique.

Their ability to see good in that which to others seemed hopeless, their ability to see hope in times when others saw doom, their ability to carry on when others chose failure---- - all of this steadfastness has brought Marvelwood to the bright new days we now enjoy.

The Class of 1981, which has shared only a small time­ segment of the long Bodkin era, takes pride in paying tribute to Headmaster Bob and to his wife Cornelia as they go now to live with mellow memories instead of with harsh realities.

In my Headmaster's Message in the first Marvelwood Yearbook in 1960, I defined what I saw as Marvelwood's mission and expressed the hope that we would have the capacity to fulfill this mission.

This mission, as I saw it, was to provide boys — and now, of course, we must add girls — with good character and traditional academics and to strengthen traditional values within the framework of a relatively informal and friendly atmosphere.

As the world seems increasingly tumultuous these days, more than ever I see the need of passing on traditional knowledge and strengthening traditional values.

More than ever, too, as Cornelia and I set out on our sabbatical year, followed by retire­ ment from Marvelwood, I hope that Marvelwood will have the capacity to fulfill this mission.

Under the leadership of Peter Tacy, Peter O'Neill, Joe Neary and Ken Keskinen I am sure that it will.

The Vespers programs try first to provide a moral and spiritual dimension to the Mar­ velwood experience and second, to develop a broader sense of community by bringing the school together to reflect on the values, pur­ poses, ideas, and life styles as presented by teachers, students, and invited guests. Speakers during the year have included Mr. Bodkin, Mr. McAllister, and Mr. Tacy of the Marvelwood community; Father Ritter of Covenant House in New York; Members of Alateen and Alcoholics Anonymous; Guru John Khalsa of the Yoga Center in Hartford; Pastor Wismar of the Cornwall Lutheran Church; Christmas Vespers with readings by Mr. Gazin, Mr. Perkinson, and Mr. Keskinen; and two student programs, culminating with the Senior Vespers during Commencement week.

In my eyes life is like a candle in that it begins and ends in darkness; in that while it burns, it gives off light and energy, is active and colorful; in that it gradually consumes itself, gets shorter and shorter; in that it can be snuffed out at any moment; in that it is brief at best, burns only for shorter duration. I leave my good bye's here, to where I met the greatest people in my life. Curty, Mikes ffS, Reyhay, ads Soups, Jeffy, Carlos, Bro If27, Kemo, Paulie, Theblo, Hutch, Booster, Benny, George. And the wall. I will end this letter to say that of all the people I just mentioned none of them could equal my Ann. Her support. Affection, and her presence in my last two years at Marvelwood have been so valuable to me.

This years Junior Class was made up of a majority of last year's Sophomores, and a large num­ ber of new students. The Class fit well together and started to work towards becoming the productive Class of 1982.

Since Marvelwood is on the verge of having its second headmaster, it is up to this year's junior Class to make him feel welcome and to help him become familiar with the school. When Mr. Tacy begins his first year, the Class of 82 will share their views with him, and help work towards making Marvelwood an even better school.

A large number of the Juniors have also participated in helping the Seniors with certain jobs, such as, supervising the Recreational Room and running the School Store. This kind of par­ ticipation has led this year's Junior Class to be willing and ready for leadership next fall.

The 1980-81 Marvelwood Sophomore Class is one of the largest the school has ever seen. Composed mostly of new students, the sophomores showed an energetic at­ titude, and had many class members on Varsity sports. This years class dinner proved successful with a very large turnout of class members.

With the coming of a new headmaster next fall, the support of the Juniors and Seniors will greatly influence the outcome of the year, judging by their performance this year, the support of next years Juniors will serve in a positive manner.

The Cross Country Team had a fine season compiling a 7-2 record under the coaching of Mr. Robert Green. The team was led by Captain Nick Benson who managed to break his old home course record while setting new records on two other courses. The team’s success was due to a lot of hard work and good team spirit.

During the season the cross country team worked on improving their skills and setting new goals that they would follow throughout the rest of the season. Nick Benson received powerful support from Co-Captain Peter Burke and teammates Kent Forstman, Adam Cohn, Rick Woods, Duane Puryear, David Tucker, Richard Harriss, Ben Cook, Jerry Coyne, and Bryan Smith. The team will lose seniors Cohn, Cook, and Coyne, but Captains Burke and Benson will be returning to the team next season.

Although the Marvelwood Varsity soccer team did not have a winning season this year, much improvement was shown both individually and as a team. This year's team was led by tri-captains Dave Curtis, Joe Church and Cajah Lupton. John Kehoe was a fantastic goalie and Bram van der Vlugt, Buster Crabtree and Paul Mahoney were the main offensive threats. The team got off to a quick start with three victories and one loss in its first four meetings. The team played aggressively throughout the season but was unable to record another victory.

Wooster and Forman were tied. Most of this year's losses were by not more than one or two goals. Departing seniors of this year's squad are Mike Hamer (MVP), Dave Curtis, joe Church, Cajah Lupton, Keith Michelson, and Tom Lewis. This year's coach was Mr. Mc­ Allister who was assisted by Mr. Shillieto.

With a lot of returning players and a number of this year's JV players, next year's team should be able to improve this year's record by winning some of those close games that were lost

Under the direction of Mr. Paul Perkinson, “adventure” remained the dominant theme of the Marvelwood Wilderness Ways Program. An ap­ preciation and respect for themselves, for others and their environment was also stressed. Whether it was dragging an injured victim off Coltsfoot Moun­ tain, swimming a mile in Tyler Lake, running ten miles on the Blue Loop trail, completing a pussic climb, repelling in the caves, “eating” a tree, portaging in a canoe or flipping in the icy April Housatonic River, students developed a spirited enthusiasm for the adventure wilderness offers.

The JV soccer team, under the coaching of Brian Kavanagh and Edward Johanningsmeier, completed the season with a 4-7 record. This year there were only six re­ turning players from last year's squad. That means there were twenty-two new players this year. All of which did get to play during the season. The high scoring players were Boardman, Miranda, Lynch, and Ransom. The team was led by a fine goalie. Matt Cun­ ningham. Because this year's team was so young many of these fine players will be returning next year to the JV squad and some will go on to the Varsity team.

The potential for a quite successful Varsity ski season was never realized this year, due, in large part, to weather. The last half of the season was called off because of unreasonable warm temperatures.

However, in five races, the team amassed a record of 8-11. The very competent performances of junior Dave Ramazzotti, senior Kris Zwick, sophomore Peter Harvey-Smith and the surprise performance of Cajah Lupton, as well as the steady performances of several others, made for an exciting, rewarding season.

For the third year in a row, Marvelwood's hockey team finished the season with a better record than that of the previous year. This year's 5-3-1 record, which was highlighted by a sixgame unbeaten streak, was the result of consistent defense and effective offense.

High scoring forwards Jeff Leech and Rich Gordon worked well together all season and were helped out by senior de­ fensemen Jim Amarante and David Curtis. In goal, Keith Michelson developed quickly in his first year as a goalie and was responsible for victories in several close games.

The team ended up with a winning record and was never out­ played by an opponent. Overall the season was a great success.

Opposin Ö coaches and players were impressed by the improved evel of play and the good sportsmanship. Steve McAllister and Nat Corwin were coaches.

Already before the start of this year's tennis season coach Gazin had predicted that this would be a year to build a team for the future. Due to the large number of new inexperienced players and a few injuries the tennis team had a tough time competing against other, often larger, schools.

However, it would be a mistake to call this season unsuccessful. Much improvement was shown by all members of the team. The team is grateful to coach Gazin, and at times needed, Mr. Keskinen for their time and devotion. Next year's squad will miss departing seniors Tom Lewis, Ben Cook and MVP Mike Hamer. With the return of many players next year's team should be able to improve this year's record.

Coached by Brian Kavanagh and Deb Corwin, the girls' softball team finished 6 and 6 — the best season a Marvelwood girls' team has ever had in any sport. The starting infield were sophomore Ann "WOOWOO" Wurzer on first base, junior Louise "WEEZIE" Gray on second, sophomore Ann "A.T." Thew on third, sophomore Sarah "DAGGIE" D'Agostino at short, sophomore Lea Harithas behind the plate and senior Laura Tyson on the mound. The outfielders were senior Sue Bryant in left, sophomore Regine Greaux in right, and sophomore Lisa "fight" Jaswell in center. Lisa, this year's Most Valuable Player, also subbed as pitcher and will start on the mound next spring. A young team with many returning starters, the girls (and coaches) are looking forward to winning seasons in the future.

The record was 5 and 6 until the last game, which was home against Berkshire. Expecting their strong varsity team, the Marvelwood girls easily defeated the jV team that came, to tie up the season. That day also happened to be Coach Kavanagh's birthday — what a birthday present!

The Marvelwood Varsity Lacrosse Team, coached by Mr. O'Neill and Mr. Johanningsmeier and captained by Jim il Amarante, Joe Church and Dave Curtis, realized its goal of a winning season with a 6-5 record. The team was told before its first game that a winning season this year would be a greater accomplishment than last year's 9-2 record because Marvelwood had moved back into Division III of the Western New England Secondary School Lacrosse Association. This move meant stiffer competition for the team and its opponents included Berkshire, Salisbury, South Kent and Hopkins Grammar varsities.

1 Season highlights included major upsets over Storm King, Darrow and Cheshire varsities, a gratifying victory I over Millbrook and a heartbreaking loss to Hotchkiss during overtime after Joe Church tied the game in its last 10 I seconds. Marvelwood gave South Kent its best fight in several years, narrowing the margin of loss to three goals.

I Throughout the season Paul Mahoney gave an outstanding performance, particularly against Berkshire, when I he made 26 saves. In the second Darrow game Paul played attack for a short time and scored two goals.

1 Jim Amarante was named a Division 111 All-Star and was tapped for the Western New England All-Star Team, I becoming the fourth Marvelwood player in 24 years to be so honored. Keith Michelson, the season's high scorer I and Most Valuable Player, was also chosen as a Division III All-Star.

For the first time in many years Marvelwood had a JV Lacrosse team again. Under the direction of coach Corwin the team had a successful year and a winning record. The team was made out of mostly young players who had never played the game before. Throughout the season all the players showed tremendous improvement. The season was highlighted when the Hotchkiss thirds were beaten 2-1 in overtime. The most dangerous offensive threat was RossKanenson who was the high scoreron the team.

Rick Schuessler wasresponsible for many face-off victories. MVP was David Tucker who was an out­ standing rookie goalie.

Considering that there was a steady drizzle all day, Alumni Day, October 19, 1980, had a good turn­ out of old grads. Getting together for happy reunions after many years, looking over the old school, and chatting with present faculty and stu­ dents occupied many of the visitors.

The day's highlight was the AlumniVarsity soccer game, which after a lot of huffing and puffing, the alumni won 3-2. The day ended with a reception and dinner. From the class of 1964 onwards, only two classes had no representatives at the re­ union.

Thorton Wilder's "A Happy Journey to Trenton and Cam­ den" was directed by Mr. Gazin. Campbell Clawson played the lead. Her strong performance amazed every­ one, but mostly, surprised Campbell. Fine performances were also rendered by Bill Hutchings, Weezie Gray, Jamie Wagstaff and Terri Harithas.

Marvelwood Drama has become a respected element to the Marvelwood experience by all members of the community. Under the direction of Mr. Paul Gazin and Mr. Paul Perkinson, the fall production consisted of two one-act plays.

FALL DRAMA

"No Why" directed by Mr. Perkinson, was a story of a boy, his family, and his suicide.

Adam Cohn and Laura Tyson played the father and mother, Sarah D'Agostino and Ruth Bramson played the aunts and Bryan Meyers played the grandfather. A solid per­ formance was given by Danial McMullen who played the boy.

IRA RUSSEL DAY Ira Russel Day was a day set aside by Mr. and Mrs. Bodkin to celebrate Ira's retirement from service to the school and the students. Ira did everything from fixing skis and broken win­ dows to making sure every dorm had heat.

On this day no classes were held but instead everyone in the entire school decorated the dining room. The Calhoun girls wrote a song which really touched his heart. Ira Russel will never be forgotten because he has done so much for the well-being of the Marvelwood community in his twenty-five years of service to Marvelwood.

With the full cooperation of the student body and the faculty, the Community Ser­ vice Program has shown many positive results in both on-campus and off-campus projects. It builds a strong student awareness of the need for community service.

Every Wednesday during the year students go out “into the world" to give services to the community in various ways. Some of the work done this year has been in nursing homes, hospitals, elementary schools, and day care centers.

Much appreciation has been shown from many of the employees for whom the stu­ dents work, and the program has shown the students the need for participation in com­ munity affairs.

May 27, T981 was the first annual "Founders' Day" in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Bodkin, who will be leaving the school this fall. After having a rough time getting the Bodkins out of bed (it was eight o'clock in the morning), the entire school gathered in the town hall. There, a number of skits were performed by students, impersonating various members of the faculty and the administration. Following these antics, several people made speeches and May 27 was officially declared "Founders' Day" by the students and faculty.
