The senior class of 1979 dedicates this year’s Prism to Beau Denham for his constant devotion and concern for the students and faculty.

As director of the Wilderness Ways program. Beau did an exceptional job of providing instruction in water safety, basic first aid and rescue procedures, survival techniques, canoeing, camping, backpacking, cross country skiing, snow shoeing and many other outdoor activities.

Beau was the sole organizer of our school ski trip to Stowe, Vermont this winter. He has always been willing to help anyone that needed an extra hand, and through his efforts it has been possible for many students to par­ ticipate in activities that would otherwise have been closed to them.

It was certainly a pleasure for all of us to share our last year with the 'Wilderness Man’. We are sorry that Mar­ velwood has lost such a fine man and we sincerely wish him the best of everything in the future.

Headmaster’s Message

1 appreciate being given the opportunity to address a brief message to this year's graduating class.

The class of 1979 might well be called a “growth” class. The most obvious thing about you has been the way so many of you have developed and matured since the class first came into being with two eighth graders five years ago. A number of you are enrolled at colleges you would not have dared aspire to a cou­ ple of years ago.

Your successes in sports, drama and other extracurriculars belie your first awkward efforts awhile back.

With full cooperation of the student body, Thursday work projects this year have shown positive results in both, aiding our community, and in building a strong student attitude for the need for community service.

Each Thursday throughout the year students go out into the world”, to service or aid the community in some way. Students assist various work services such as daycare centers, nursing homes, hospitals, and elemen­ tary schools. Employees of these organizations have shown their respect and appreciation for our volunteers.

The governor of Connecticut, Ella Grasso, has formally recognized the Marvelwood students and what they’ve done.

Thursday Work Projects have given the experience to, and has shown the students the need for their participa­ tion and concern of community affairs around them.

This experience is important for youths and has been given through the Thursday Work Job Program. tI

J.V. SOCCER The junior varsity soccer team had a suc­ cessful season under first year coaches Steve McAllister and Paul Gazin. A strong defense, in­ cluding Dave Curtis in the goal, and an aggressive offense that featured Gregg Goebel, Ken Felt and Dave Ramazzotti, combined to earn a winning season this year. Mo doubt the stars of this year’s junior varsity will be moving up to the varsity in the fall.

The varsity soccer squad of 1978 had a discouraging year. Throughout the season the team was plagued by injuries. The team had little depth to begin with, and when Paul Sharon. Stan James, and Rich Hefler were sidelined the results were devastating.

The hole in the defense was patched by rookie Matt Bradley. Hefler was replaced by Bryant Sweet.

The injuries penetrated each unit; attack, mid-field, and defense. Each unit also had its strengths however. The attack was led by Stan James and Gordie MacKenzie.

Rit Whitehead was the workhorse of the mid-field and the halfbacks rallied around his 'get the ball' style of play. The defense, sound throughout the season, was anchored around co-captain Paul Esty, the team's Most Valuable Player at the center fullback position.

The team was grateful to Coach Dave Powell for his devotion and tireless efforts to build a winning team. The tri-captains, Sharon, Esty, and Lambert were proud to see the squad rise up and give the coach the one victory he wanted most all season long — a win over Salisbury Varsity!

The only word to describe the varsity squad of '78 is Courage. Courage to face superior teams time and again, despite the painful losses. Their outright courage was more than enough to overshadow the poor record. 1-9-1 19

For the second consecutive year Coach Bob Greene’s cross country team tallied a winning season. The team was again led by senior captain Pete Mahoney. Pete, as has become his habit these past few years, was recognized as the team's Most Valuable Player at the Fall Sports Dinner. Mot only was he the team leader and a most consistent runner himself, but on Parent's Day he smashed his own Marvelwood course record with an incredible time of 11 ;38.

Although the team loses four seniors this year, there are several members who were new to the sport this year and should be able to carry on the team’s winning tradition next year.

GIRLS’ SOCCER Around captain Donna Levesque and center forward Dora Ledbetter, who was named Most Valuable Player at the end of the season, the two rookie coaches, Miss Trina Fennell and Miss Pam Greene, began to build a girl’s soccer program.

Although it was a frustrating season, this team which had only seventeen girls to draw from — nine of whom were new to Marvelwood this year — mastered many of the basic skills during the fall. With only three senior girls graduating this year and the promise of a larger female enrollment for next season, many observers expect the benefits of this year’s experience to be reaped next fall.

Wilderness Ways members this year did much to enrich and renew the program. Mr. Beau Denham, the group's amiable and respected instructor, introduced many un­ familiar students to the thrill of camping, canoeing, orienteering, and most of all sim­ ply how to appreciate the outdoor life. In or­ der to further the scope of Wilderness Ways, the boys organized a four-day trip to Vermont to hike the Long Trail from Jonesville to Stowe. All together this group has shown much promise and has helped to enhance the prospects for future members.

This year the ski team enjoyed a ten and eleven season. With several new and inexperienced racers on the team, the record was a very satisfying achievement.

I

The team was coached by Mr. Peter O’Heill and Miss Pam Greene. Miss Greene did more over the course of the season than she might have expec­ ted due to an injury to Mr. O’Neill early in the season. All those connected with the team agree that she did a fine job filling in as head coach.

This year’s hockey season was not one of the schools finest, yet it turned out to be a big improvement over the past several years.

There were a number of inexperienced players on the team.

These players showed great enthusiasm and determination throughout the season. A good deal of the team’s success was due to Coach McAllister. The team also benefited from the support of its two captains, goalie Peter Mahoney and center forward Gordie MacKenzie. The two major problems that faced the team this year were the shortage of ice time and a very tough schedule. Ice time for practice was only available three nights a week and many of the schools on the schedule had considerably larger enrollments than our own.

The leading forwards on the team, Stanley James, Joe Church, Chris A’Hearn, and Danny Mahoney gave the scoring punch that was essential to our team effort.

The defense work of Dave Curtis. Tom Holman, Donte DeLoreto, Peter Burnham, and Rob Buckey helped the forward line a great deal. While in the nets rookie goalie Matt Bradley did a fantastic job, particularly in the Millbrook game.

FALL DRAMA This fall the Marvelwood Drama Club put on two one-act plays in the Loft Theater. The first was a com­ edy by Eugene Ionesco, “The Bald Soprano", and the «1 second was a melodrama by Wilber Braun, “Curse You. Jack Dalton".

The plays were directed by Mr. Roy Towl. He was assisted by his wife Sharon who took charge of costuming, and by Mrs. Laurie O'Neill, Mrs. Wynne Kavanagh and Donna Levesque who worked on make-up.

Student involvement included some of the old hands from previous years as well as some promising new Thespians. The interest, enthusiasm, and hard work of the faculty advisors, cast, and tech crew resulted in two very entertaining nights of theater for the townspeople and the Marvelwood community.

SOFTBALL This year’s softball team had a completely new look. Mr. Brian Kavanagh and Miss Trina Fennell assumed the coaching duties, nine of the team members were in their first year at Marvelwood, and the schedule had been revam­ ped so that virtually all eleven contests were against varsity teams.

As the season progressed two things became apparent; injuries and cancellations would prevent the team from at­ taining its goal of a five hundred season, and the team was progressing nicely as a unit and in terms of the develop­ ment of individual skills.

A very solid nucleus will be returning for next season.

Among them is co-captain and this year's Most Valuable Player, Donna Levesque. However, the team will miss two graduates next year: co-captain Tracy Evans and Dora Led­ better.

formally, it would be enough to say the record was 8-2, one of the wins was over Hotchkiss, and leave it at that. Although this was the lacrosse team’s record this season the story of the squad's success in­ volves more than this.

Coach Pete O’Heill predicted before the start of the season that this would be an all around well balanced team. This proved to be the case both defensively and offensively with one exception. Who could predict that Tri-captain Pete Mahoney would come out of the goal to score thirty-two goals enroute to his selection as the team’s Most Valuable Player. Along with Pete, Bryant Sweet also won recognition for his ef­ forts this spring by becoming the recipient of the under former Lacrosse Award.

Mo doubt the team will miss the old hands who graduate this year, and the handful of seniors who played lacrosse for the first time at Mar­ velwood this year. However, along with his very able assistant, Mr. Ed Johanningsmeier, Mr. O’Meili is a safe bet to confidently tutor next year’s team to a winning season.

One final note: At the spring awards ceremony the graduating seniors, with Paul Esty as their spokesman, made it clear that they ap­ preciate all that Coach O’Meili has taught them not only this season but over the past three seasons, both on and off the lacrosse field.

I 1 This year the tennis team was composed of eight players. The team had two objectives: to meet a goal of individual improvement and to have al! team members become better tactical players.

Each team member had some basic knowledge of how to play tennis when the season began. However, all had room for improvement in the in­ dividual skills that are needed to participate in a match, whether it be com­ petitive or strictly for the enjoyment of the game. And everyone did im­ prove. Skills such as twist serving, drop shots, ball placement, the switch, deepstrokes for back court play, and most important consistancy and ; control were noticeably improved by the end of the season.

Although the team did not have a winning season, it did acquire more effective methods of team play and a better overall knowledge of the tac­ tics of tennis. The team recognizes that much of the credit for the progress made this season is due to the efforts of Mr. Keskinen to whom we would like to express our sincere thanks and appreciation.

Finally, it should be mentioned that freshman John Kehoe held the number one position on the team ladder throughout the season and was recognized as the teams Most Valuable Player at the spring sports assembly.

On the evening of May 19th and 20th the Mar­ velwood Dranna Club staged an outstanding perfor­ mance after only six weeks of rehearsals. The produc­ (t tion was Art Buchwaid’s two-act play, “Sheep On The Runway". Mr. Roy Towl again took charge of direction and the make-up crew was enhanced with the addi­ tion of Tracy Evans.

However, the real story in the spring production has to do with the efforts of the tech crew. After the fall production it was necessary to rebuild the stage and rearrange the layout of the theater in order to conform to the directives of the local fire marshal. Mr. Gazin’s tech crew, which consisted primarily of Stan James, Tom Drake, Scott Hellyar, and Bret Weeks, did an amazing job working under the pressures of too little time and very little money.

The Friday evening Baccalaureate Ser­ vice at Marvelwood is very special. Each year on the eve of graduation, the service is held in the First Church of Christ. In this historic building of simple dignity, the service accomplishes two ends. It is a time for reflection. Reflection upon a high school career that is rapidly coming to a close. It is also an opportunity to reflect upon the promises and the frustra­ tions that lay ahead. Secondly, the bac­ calaureate is the final meeting of the school community. The seniors have lived and worked and grown together, and now are ready to turn over the reins after they step out proudly into the world Saturday morning.

V COMMEMCEMENT only the second time in twenty-two years graduation was held indoors. At another school this would probably mean the ceremony would be held in the gym or some sterile assembly hall. However, there were no disappointed guests at Marvelwood's Com­ mencement because again the school was permitted to use the First Church of Christ.

As has been the tradition for a number of years now, several parents of graduating seniors took an active part in the ceremony. The awarding of diplomas was done by Trustee Dr. Charles DeFeo, father of Peter DeFeo, and Trustee Mr. William F. Drake, ]r., father of Tom Drake. The Commencement Address was given

by Mr. John C. Esty, President, National Association of Independent Schools and father of Paul Esty.

Aside from the often witty and pointed remarks of Mr. Esty, the highlight of the Commencement was the presentation of the special awards by Mr. Bodkin, and the address by Valedictorian, Jason Bleibtreu. This year the Loyalty Cup had co-winners — Jason J. Bleibtreu and Gordon Cox MacKenzie, and the Marvelwood Cup was presented to Peter Mahoney.
