Yearbook: a book published yearly as a report or summary of the statistics or facts.

According to Mr. Webster a yearbook is only a report of statistics or facts. We have tried to make this yearbook just a little more than facts and statistics. We hope it will help the graduating class to recall all the pleasant - and some unpleasant — things they have gone through here at Marvelwood. It will also serve, for the seniors, as an end to their secondary education. For the underformers, this book will also serve as a memory, but more as a milestone to their lives here at Marvelwood.

We would like to thank Mr. Michael H. Harper for his devotion and guidance.

the PRISM staff and the class of 1969 dedicate this yearbook to a man who has devoted his recent life to Marvelwood School. The man of whom we are speaking is Mr. Robert A. Bodkin. Mr. Bodkin has served as headmaster at Marvelwood for a full twelve years. His concern for his school, its growth and development, has served each of us. It will continue to serve students for many, many years to come. As a result of his unselfish dedication Mr. Bodkin became ill this year and has been unable to be with us. We hope that he will be back among us soon.

As the Class of 1969 got its start back in September,

1963, it was very small and very passive compared with the eighth grade of the year before. The class started off

with Bessalt, Belknap, Cosmus, and McNeil. Not long after the year got underway Donny Rawson joined the

class. One more student entered in the spring, and John

Maus finished the year with the quiet five.

That was the year of t]je Greenhouse Rumbles,

MacGuire’s skateboard rides down Bunker Hill, and Cleve Storrs’ disagreement with Cheshire. On the whole, the 48

but all that was to change the next September.

Freshman year got off to a good start with all but one

member of the class living in Rumsey. The first major incident was the Great Shaving Cream Fight, and as time

went on the year proved to be a little more exciting than

we had expected. The class had grown to twenty,

Country Club.

Our change from freshmen to sophomores brouglit with it new members and, for the first time, a younger class. Added were Bush-Brown, Elgood, Thomas, Schmidt,

Carleton, Brustrom, Peck, Baker, Hemingway, and Paddock. We retain many fond

memories, including Mr. Muir and his lacrosse goalie Ralph and little Lambert Jackson. By the end of the year the class was beginning to mature and contribute

more useful members to the

school community. We were also providing the school with

played on varsity teams and the JV teams were filled with

After an all-too-short summer, we returned to Cornwall with the great status of

being juniors. This fact swelled some heads but it soon wore off. As the year progressed our interests shifted from the lower forms to our upcoming senior year

and responsibilities. Hasner, Campbell, Cameron, and Hoyt joined the fun for the last two years.

The year went by quickly and we looked forward to being the big men on campus in the tall. Memorable events of the year included Rumsey parties, the giant phone bill, and the Bruehl fire.

The last leg of the journey started in September, 1968, with the return of everybody from the preceding year and Rick Koehler the only new member. The

year got off on the right foot with an undefeated cross country team and a good

soccer varsity. However, things didn’t go too well for long, as the midyear Ad. Math. marks will attest. The weather was good for winter sports, with plenty of snow for

Mohawk and ice for the refurbished hockey rink. The weather was most considerate

when on February second and third from 24 to 30 inches of the white stuff extended the mid-winter weekend for two extra days. It took Cornwall another week to shovel itself out.

For the second half of the year we had to make do without the leadership

of Mr. Bodkin and were lucky to have

Mr.

Rosnshaugen

to fill in as our

headmaster. Even though RAB was with us for such a small part of the season, his

idea of a Student-Faculty Advisory Council was put to work, with Dave

Culhane as School President. We are glad

Mr. Bodkin will be back with the school

next year.

Next year will mean separation for the class of ’69. Members will be going to college in all parts of the United States and some will be going abroad. We hope to be able to keep in touch with our friends, and also that many times in the future we will again come back to Cornwall as

we have so often in the past.

Coaches van Beuren and Giesing Captains Campbell and Hemingway 64

With eight boys from the squad attending the Continental Soccer Clinic and four returning letter men in the starting lineup the 1968 Varsity Soccer Team seemed to have a great deal of potential. Under the leadership of coaches Van Beuren and Giesing, the team worked well as a unit and developed excellent morale, turning in a fine record against formidable opposition.

The team had a scrimmage against Berkshire on September 23. In this first outing teamwork was ragged, and Berkshire seemed clearly superior to Marvelwood. A second scrimmage, against Cranwell, saw definite improvement and reason for optimism.

CANTERBURY The season officially opened on September 28 with a 2-1 win over Canterbury on our home field, the first in three years. The first quarter was scoreless, with Marvelwood in control most of the time. Hal Bauer made a goal unassisted in the second session, and two minutes after the half he scored again on an assist from Dan Reid. Dumphy scored next for the visitors, but the last quarter went scoreless, leaving the home team victors by one point.

WOOSTER Marvelwood controlled the game until Wooster scored on two fast break plays in the second quarter. Hal Bauer put the home team on the scoreboard with a chip shot from Brooks Paul. Wooster came back to increase its lead in the third quarter, so although Bauer scored again on two fast break plays in the final period, Marvelwood finished on the short end of a 34 score.

HOTCHKISS J.V. On a cold October 10th, Marvelwood traveled to Lakeville for a decisive win over Hotchkiss. The first quarter saw scores by Jon Noyes and Bauer, and right wing Pete Ripley made it 3-0 on a long shot in the second. Paul made it 4-0 in the third period.

Goalie Tim Gurney held the opposition scoreless, and Coach van Beuren was able to empty the bench toward the end of the game.

AVON Parents’ Weekend, October 12, saw the team battle to a scoreless tie with Avon.

Marvelwood controlled the ball for the greater part of the game, but was never able to get by the Avon goalie, who played an excellent game.

FORMAN Marvelwood again controlled the ball against Forman, Danny Reid and David Bush-Brown contributing three goals apiece, while Noyes added another for good measure. The final score was 7-3.

GUNNERY This game was the liighlight of the season for the team. Gunnery was undefeated and Marvelwood entered the game as a distinct underdog. Playing on its home field, Marvelwood battled to a 2-2 tie at the end of regulation time. Danny Reid scored the winning goal in overtime.

SALISBURY On October 26, before a Salisbury Parents’ Day crowd, neither team played up to potential. The hosts scored twice while Reid was the only scorer for the Blue and White, leaving the score 2-1.

ALUMNI On the day after the Salisbury defeat, Marvelwood held its traditional Alumni game.

Although the oldsters put up a good fight, the Varsity won by a fairly large margin.

WATKINSON On the following Wednesday the team traveled to Hartford to play Watkinson. The game was close all the way, with the lead changing hands three times. The home team won 3-2, with Reid and Bush-Brown the scorers for the visitors.

LENOX After two recent losses the team was up for the Lenox game, played in Lenox, Mass.

Again Reid and Bush-Brown were the Marvelwood scorers, and Gurney was credited with a shutout. The final score was 2-0.

WESTMINSTER In the last game of the season Marvelwood scored in the first minutes, but fell back as a much stronger Westminster team went ahead to make the score 6-1.

Although the team did have a good record, it might have been better if Hal Bauer had not broken his leg and if Co-captain Booth Hemingway had not been out for so much of the season. With these problems, the Varsity did well to come up with a winning season.

The Strategy Led by Captain Dale Baker, the varsity cross country team was the first to go

undefeated in the School’s history. Coached by Mr. T. E. W. Durrans, the thirteen runners

posted a record of eight wins and no losses.

Unaware of Marvelwood’s racing plans, most teams fell prey to the team’s tactics.

While it might seem logical to have the fastest men in the leading positions, Coach Durrans’ runners didn’t work that way. The slower men, called the “pace makers," were placed in the leading positions with the job of starting with a sprint and maintaining a fast

pace as long as possible. Pace makers were used to lure the fastest of the opponents into a

pace that would tire them before the end of the race.

Next came the “independent men.” They were free to run the race as they saw fit,

either acting as additional pace makers or running a straight race. After the independent men came the “killers.” This group consisted of the five fastest men on the team. Their duty was to stay in a pack not far behind the leading opponents, whom they would

gradually overtake.

Last but not least were the “follow-up” men who stayed behind the killers and became

a sort of second group of killers. They were to maintain a good position and, hopefully, hold it.

In the five-year history of the cross country team this was the second winning team.

At the Fall Sports Banquet Mr. Durrans gave much credit to tactics but much more to the

excellent and dedicated boys he had to work with.

The Season Marvelwood opened against Storm King at Cornwall-on-the-Hudson on October 5, winning by a score of 22^/6-34^/^. Richard Sullivan and a Storm King man tied for first

place and Marvelwood took eight out of the first eleven places.

Next came a home meet on Parents’ Weekend, October 12, when the squad met Laurelcrest School. The home team took eight out of the first ten places, winning 17-38.

Against Forman the score was Marvelwood 20, Forman 39. A Forman man came in first, but the next ten finishers were from Marvelwood.

On October 23, the team met its first real challenge against Gunnery J.V. and Lenox

J.V. at Lenox. Marvelwood won the meet by only two points, beating Lenox 28-30.

Gunnery had a score of 67.

Marvelwood next beat Winchester School 15-50, taking the first ten places. The first

five finishers were Richard Sullivan, Jeff Barber, Captain Dale Baker, Andy Keiser, and Larry Paddock.

On November 1 the team ran against their strongest rival, one that they had never beaten, the Hotchkiss J.V.s. The victory was close — 27-28 — and the race was hard and

well run. Hotclikiss took the first two places with Barber, Baker, Walters, Keiser, and Sullivan finishing 3,4,5,7, and 8 respectively.

The season closed with a repeat win over the Gunnery J.V.s, 22-39.

The School gives recognition to Coach Durrans and Captain Baker for such a fine season. With Co-captains Jim Crane and Richard Sullivan, Gordon Parker, Andy Keiser,

Jeff Barber, Phil Sprayregan, Kirk Walters, and Ed Stuart returning, prospects for future

successes are unusually bright.

The Varsity Hockey team posted a moderately successful record of six wins and four losses. However, the record did not accurately reflect the fine quality of play and enthusiasm. With only ten players on the roster, Marvelwood often managed to out-skate and out-play teams that had twice the numbers and twice the ice time.

CANTERBURY In the opening game, against the Canterbury Varsity, Tim Gurney made the only score of the first period with an assist from Dave Bush-Brown. The same combination did it again in the second period, while the opposition scored once. Canterbury slipped three goals past goalie Mike Moody in the last session, making it 4-2 for Canterbury.

MILLBROOK J.V. On January 22 the team overpowered Millbrook, scoring four goals in the first period, five in the second, and two in the third. The one-sidedness of the game is further shown by the shots on goal, 95 for Marvelwood to 9 for its opponents.

HOTCHKISS J.V. In the first home game the Varsity edged Hotchkiss, 4-3. After a I-l first period, Gurney and Bruce Janelli put the Blues in front. Bush-Brown added an insurance goal in the last period as the visitors scored again.

LENOX J.V. Again playing at home. Marvelwood routed Lenox in a game in which everybody but one defense man and goalie Moody scored. Only one goal was made in the first period, due to poor ice conditions. However, five more were added in the second period and seven more in the last.

KENT J.V. On February 1 Marvelwood played Kent on neutral ice at the Salisbury School. Kent scored twice in the opening period and Bush-Brown evened it up with two in the second.

Kent went ahead with another goal in the same period and added another in the last ses­ sion. Max Tufts scored near the end of the game to make it 4-3.

CRANWELL Marvelwood was upset in another home game by Cranwell. After two scoreless periods, the visitors scored twice and Gurney made the only goal for Marvelwood.

SOUTH KENT J.V. In a night game at South Kent the home team took an early lead but Bruce Janelli tied it up in the second period. He and Gurney scored again in the last period to make the final score 3-1. Moody played his usual excellent game in the nets.

WESTMINSTER J.V. An exciting dance weekend game was played at Westminster on February 22, when Marvelwood pulled from behind to win in overtime, 4-3. The home team dominated the first period and went ahead 2-0. In the second period Scott Harvie started Marvelwood’s drive with a goal and Bush-Brown tied it up. In a well played last period Westminster went ahead again with a rebound in the opening minutes. In an attempt to tie the game Marvelwood peppered the goalie and even pulled goalie Moody from his cage to add more power. This paid off just before the end of the game, when Janelli deflected a shot by Bush-Brown into the cage. In a six-minute playoff Moody saved a breakaway, and in the final minute Bob Holbrook made the winning goal.

FORMAN The Forman game proved to be another breather for Marvelwood. As in the Lenox game, almost everybody got into the scoring act, the final result being Marvelwood 12, Forman 1.

SALISBURY The season closed with a heartbreaking loss to Salisbury at Salisbury. The game could have gone either way. As was true all season, Marvelwood came on strong in the third period and would have won if it had not been for some spectacular saves by the home goalie. Salisbury scored in overtime, making it a 2-3 loss for the Blues.

The main characteristic of the 1969 Varsity Ski Team was inexperience. Captain Danny Reid was the only holdover from the outstanding 1968 team, so a major job of

rebuilding had to be undertaken with virtually novice racers. Coach Schneider was new at the job but did more for the team than could have been expected under the

circumstances. As a result of his efforts and the instruction furnished by Captain Reid and ski instructors from the Mohawk Ski Area, a great deal of improvement was made during the season.

The difficulty of the task was heightened by a schedule that included the most fierce competition for a Marvelwood ski team to date. For the first time the team faced varsity

racing teams from the upper bracket of the Tri-State League. The competition included Hotchkiss, Choate, and Suffield, as well as traditional rivals such as Salisbury, Kent, and

Millbrook.

Joining Reid on the six-man team were seniors Brian Campbell and Doug Carleton,

junior Reese Kornreich, and sophomores George Bard and Rob Wallingford.

HOTCHKISS AND SALISBURY The first meet was held at Indian Mountain on January 15, against Hotchkiss and Salisbury. Hotchkiss placed first with a score of 95, Salisbury was second with 83, and

Marvelwood a poor third with 45.

MILLBROOK

On the following Saturday, skiing at Millbrook, Danny Reid was first in both the Giant Slalom and the Slalom, and Brian Campbell was second in the former event. Marvelwood

won the Giant Slalom event, 96-92, but Millbrook won the Slalom, 96-82, thus achieving

a greater combined total to win the meet.

SUFFIELD AND KENT Saturday, January 25, saw the Varsity at Catamount to compete against Suffield and

Kent. The former placed first, Kent second, and Marvelwood, with no skiers placing in the first ten, was last.

THE TRI-STATES On February 15 and 19 Reid, Campbell, and Carleton represented Marvelwood at the

Tri-states” at Catamount. They did not do well in the Slalom and placed twelfth out of fourteen schools.

KENT, CHOATE, MILLBROOK Dance Weekend saw the varsity competing at Mohawk against Millbrook, Choate, and

Kent. Kent won the meet, Choate was second, Marvelwood third, and Millbrook placed last. Reid had a very good first run but disqualified on his second run.

SALISBURY The season closed with a loss to Salisbury. However, there was some satisfaction in the fact that Marvelwood came very close to beating a team that had beaten it very badly in

the opening meet.

The 1969 season can be considered one of frustration, but it was also one of learning and additional experience. In 1970 this young team will have matured, and the veterans

will be joined by much talent up from the J.V.s, including Jon Asch, Phil Sprayregen, Mark Murphy, John Edwards, Andy Keiser, Rick Sullivan, Scott Culbreth, Jack Whitton, Brooks Paul, and Marshall Heaven.

MARVELWOOD SHOWS INCREDIBLE POWER - LEADS DIVISION 11 Marvelwood’s success in the first three games has put fear into the hearts of coaches and players on opposing teams in western New England. In three games, Marvelwood has scored 50 goals and given up just three; 18-0 over Cheshire, 19-0 over Suffield, and 13-3 over a good Darrow team yesterday. The veteran attack seems to be leading the way - Bush-Brown, Gurney, and Dick Noyes are all on the higli scoring list as is middie co-captain Hemingway.

Marvelwood plays Westminster on Wednesday and takes on a very strong Taft team on Saturday, a team Marvelwood is rumored to have beaten in a scrimmage early in the season. ^5

WESTMINSTER UPSETS MARVELWOOD IN SLOPPY CONTEST

“Both Westminster and Hotchkiss had big wins this last week. On Wednesday Westminster faced the higlily favored Marvelwood Mavericks at Cornwall. In spite of Marvelwood’s record in the three previous games, Wednesday was Westminster’s day and they won, 6-4. ’Minster had a 5-2 lead at the half and was never headed after that.

MARVELWOOD OVER TAFT

On Friday Division 11 runner-up Marvelwood bounced back and beat Taft, a Division I leader, 4-1. Marvelwood should have no trouble this week with the Choate JV’s and Avon; the following week they will face Hotchkiss and Loomis.”

WESTMINSTER - MARVELWOOD ON TOP IN DIVISION 11

“Since its stunning win over Marvelwood last week, Westminster has continued its winning ways with an 8-2 win over Avon last Friday and a 10-6 win over Berkshire this past Wednesday. Montgomery scored four goals for the winners in the Wednesday game; Jim Hooper was high scorer for Berkshire with three goals. After beating Taft last Friday, Marvelwood easily defeated Avon yesterday, 12-1. The Marvelwood goalie continues to play spectacular ball, the defense is excellent, and Hemingway, Bush-Brown, Gurney and Noyes have the ability to put the ball in the net.”

TOUGH LOSSES TO HOTCHKISS AND LOOMIS

Loomis also had a good week with wins over Conard H.S. and a strong Marvelwood team. Loomis has two league games left and must win both of them to tie with T-P for the division championship. On Wednesday Loomis will go to Choate for what will be the 100th game in Loomis’ ten years of Lacrosse; on Saturday a strong Hotchkiss team will paly Loomis at Windsor. Hotchkoss had three big wins recently over Choate last Saturday and then a marathon win at Marvelwood on Wednesday 4-3 in five overtime periods with the winning tally being scored by Joe Ständer! at 19.59 of overtime. Both goalies, Jon Noyes for Marvelwood and John Hill for Hotchkiss, were outstanding and made 19 and 18 saves respectively.

VICTORIES OVER KINGSWOOD AND STERLING

In the last week of the season Marvelwood defeated Kingswood on Wednesday and Sterling in contests on Saturday and Sunday. In the Kingswood game Marvelwood’s fine defense proved effective once more, holding Kingswood to one goal. Sterling came down from Vermont with a tough, hustling team for two games on dance weekend. Marvelwood’s ball handling and finesse proved too much for Sterling and the Blue and White won by scores of 14-4 and 13-4. On Sunday, after a hectic night of revelry the Marvelwood stickmen managed to re-group just in time for the contest. Just before game time Marvelwood unveiled its very creative and unorthodox pre-game warmup. It is believed by some that this unique style of pre-game drills was instrumental in psyching-out the opposition.

CAMPBELL, HEMINGWAY, NOYES NAMED TO ALL-WESTERN NEW ENGLAND TEAM Co-captains Campbell and Hemingway and goalie Jon Noyes were among the players selected by the coaches of the 19 member schools of the Western New England Lacrosse Association for the all-league team. Throughout the season defenseman Campbell’s agility and uncanny checking made him especially effective in stopping the opposition’s high scoring attackmen. With Hemingway’s 29 points and the drive that made him come up with the loose ball more often than anybody else on the field, he was an excellent face-off artist and defense midfielder.

Noyes was one of the finest goalies in schoolboy lacrosse.

Unfortunately, this year the Marvelwood tennis team was not able to claim a record quite as satisfactory as that of the varsity lacrosse team. Although the winnings were low, the spirit was high.

At the beginning of the season the first three matches were cancelled by stormy weather. As the weather became better, the record became worse.

LOSE THREE The first three matches Marvelwood played were defeats. To be more specific, the scores were Gunnery JV 7-2, Berkshire JV 13-5, and Cranwell 5-1. The Cranwell match was followed by the Salisbury JV match, when Marvelwood was able to proclaim its first victory by a 6-3 margin.

Next the team travelled to Forman on May 14. Out of a possible eight sets, Marvelwood took two with Jim Crane taking his singles and the second doubles team of Max Tufts and George Bard winning theirs. The match ended in a 6-2 victory for the Forman School.

DEFEAT AVON

The tennis team then departed for its match with Avon’s JV’s. The match went well for Marvelwood, with Chip Gutzwa, Scott Young, Jim Crane, and Reese Kornreich all winning their singles. When it came to doubles, the Blue and White racked up two matches with their first and second teams being victorious. Unfortunately, because of their lack of time, the third doubles, consisting of Reese Kornreich and Mike Moody was unable to finish the match. Marvelwood took an easy victory, the score being 6-2.

On May 21 the team travelled to Darrow. Because of the lack of playing time, each member of the team played two sets with the results being added to the appropriate side. In the singles Gutzwa took one set, Tufts two, Harvie one, and Bard one. In the doubles matches, Marvelwood only captured one set, by the Tufts-Harvie team. The match ended with Darrow winning by a score of 11-6.

The South Kent varsity was the next and last match of the season. Playing for the first time on home courts, the tennis team put up a good fight against their worthy opponents. In singles, Scott Young split sets, winning one 6-1. Max Tufts took both his singles with scores of 6-2, 6-2, and Jim Crane taking both of his, 6-3, 6-3. South Kent took first, second, and third doubles, ending the match with a 10-5 victory.

NO TEAM MEMBERS GRADUATE The season resulted in six losses to two wins. With all its members returning next year, the Marvelwood team has hopes of improving in skill and experience over the summer, and hopes to improve the record next year.

Each boy entering Marvelwood is assigned to one of four divisions. He remains a member of a division for the duration of his stay at the school.

After each marking period boys are graded on a point system for marks, effort, citizenship and activities in which they participate. The total number of points is then calculated for each division and the higliest scoring division is >> 6( rewarded by a niglit out. D division, the highest scoring division this year, has seen such movies as “Bullet, The Wrecking Crew,” “Interlude,” and “The Niglit They Raided Minskies.”

This year Bruce Janelli broke the school record of 165 set by Paul Sprayregen of the Class of’67, with a score of 183. This is quite an achievement.

The new Student-Faculty Advisory Council, organized by Mr. Bodkin in September, 1968, started as an experimental group which would make recommendations to the Administration for changes that should take place in the school community.

The Council, composed of eiglit students and three faculty members, was elected by various organizations, as follows: Students and faculty elect the President.

Students and faculty elect the Vice-President.

Dorm supervisors elect one student representative.

The Senior class elects one student representative.

The Fifth Form elects one student representative.

Blue Key elects one student representative.

The Monogram Club elects one student representative.

The faculty elects one faculty representative.

The Administration elects one representative.

Students elect one faculty representative.

The class officers elect one student representative.

The Council meets once a month to consider all formally rendered suggestions from any of the groups represented on the Council that are consonant with the Council’s aims. The Council makes recommendations to the Administration concerning these suggestions. It has united the various groups involved in running the school into one central discussion group.

MONOGRAM CLUB The Monogram Club consists of all boys who have received at least two letters in one sport or letters in two or more sports. Captains of varsity teams are automatically members. Club members are distinguished by white letter sweaters which may be worn in place of jackets.

There are several purposes of the club. First is the recognition of the school’s leading athletes. Another is systematizing the arhletic program, in which the club may propose changes. The members also help set the standards that must be met to qualify for varsity letters. Varsity captains for the current season are officers of the club. There are two committees, one to organize rallies and arrange for posters, and the other in charge of greeting visiting teams and arranging teas after games.

Organized by Mr. Flynn in 1963, the Club has two distinct functions. One is to study all aspects and eras of military history under the guidance of a specialist who has worked in the field for eighteen years. The other is the opportunity for members to participate in war games.

Under Mr. Flynn’s rules the board — 4x6, 6x8, or 6x12 — represents an area of 214 square miles. 500 pages of rules are available to members to enable them to do battles accurately, in Napoleonic period engagements some 450 figures represent 54,000 men. The active collection of figures runs to about 1600.

For the first time in Marvelwood’s history, a chess club and team was initiated and organized, under the influence of Mike Moody. As the season progressed, Mr. James Plummer joined the club as an advisor.

The chess team ended the season with a record of 2 wins, 3 losses, and a tie. Although the team failed to have a winning season, it gained much experience and had a lot of fun.

The organization of the team and club has been a great success and will continue as long as there is student interest.

Two very commendable performances of the play Twelve Angry Men” by Reginald Rose were given on March eleventh and twelfth in the Assembly Room.

Directed by Mr. Jay Stroud, the play was seen by the student body, the faculty, and a few parents as well as some local townspeople.

The play itself depicted a jury room in which the members of a jury were voting on a murder case involving a man’s life. In the first act, the vote was eleven to one in favor of a verdict of guilty. But by the end of the last act, and after many heated debates, this vote became a unanimous “not guilty.

THE SOCIAL SEASON

Our social season started off with a dance with St. Margaret’s School. The girls arrived from Waterbury at 6:30 and were met at the Calhoun reception room. After dates were introduced, they departed for the Dining Hall. From dinner the dates were escorted to the Assembly Room where the dance was held. The band provided pleasant entertainment while the couples “grooved.” The one-night stand provided the couples with a pleasant and relaxing time.

The next dance, also at home, was with Wykeham Rise School from Washington. Once more the couples enjoyed the pleasant atmosphere and it was said by all that the dance was a great success.

Our third event was with Miss Hall’s School, and was again held in the Assembly room. “Ajax” provided the entertainment and a good time was had by all in spite of the fact that not many seniors were present.

A record crowd turned up for the Winter Invitational Weekend, February 22nd and 23rd. Most guests arrived around lunch time, the meal being served in the Dining Hall. In the afternoon the girls went to various sports along with their dates. Marvelwood won a thriller against Westminster in an away hockey game, while the skiers placed third in a home contest against Kent, Choate, and Millbrook. Many couples found the snow excellent at Mohawk.

There was general socializing in the Assembly Room from five to seven, and dinner was served at eiglit. Next, dancers were taken to the Mohawk Ski Lodge for the evening. The professional band, “The Destined Few,” provided music, with AJAX, a school combo, filling in from time to time.

After breakfast on Sunday many couples went skiing, returning at 2:15. Most of the girls were gone by 3:00.

Special thanks are due to the Pennells, the van Beurens, and the Dance Committee for making the weekend a great success.

SPRING DANCE WEEKEND Dates arrived for a buffet lunch on Saturday, Mary 24, and all were housed for the weekend in the New Dorm. At 2:30 a large crowd of students, their dates, and faculty members attended the varsity lacrosse game in which the home team swamped Sterling School, which had travelled from Vermont for the occasion. There were also spectators at the South Kent tennis match, also played at home.

Tea was served after the games, and at 7:30 boys met their dates in the Dining Hall for a picnic supper. By the time 8:30 rolled around, couples were ready to dance. The band, “The Random Concept,” performed an excellent concert, which, combined with the fantastic light show controlled by Rob McGowan, made the dance a huge success.

Sunday’s weather was dismal, but after a late breakfast a second lacrosse game provided another victory over Sterling. By time for lunch, the sun had come out, and all were able to enjoy a picnic lunch before it was time for the girls to depart. .HI" >■

SUMMER SCHOOL The sixth session of the Summer School of Reading and English, founded by Mr. Bodkin, opened on June 30 with a capacity enrollment of about forty boys and thirteen faculty members.

The school is organized so that a student can learn what his personal weaknesses are and how to improve upon them. After the first two days, in which several types of diagnostic tests are given, the boys are placed in small groups according to their specific needs. No grades are given during the largest part of the summer, for the emphasis is on self-improvement, not on competition. Each boy is responsible to an advisor who checks on his progress in all areas in weekly faculty meetings.

Terminal tests and extensive reports at the end of the summer are discussed with parents on Progress Day.

Co-Directors for the Summer School were Mr. John Flynn of the regular Marveiwood faculty and Mr. William P. Gillette, Assistant Headmaster of the Deveaux School in Niagara Falls, N.Y. Reading specialists were Mrs. John Flynn, who has been with the school since its inception, Mr. Jerry Margolis of Columbia High School, South Orange, N.J., Mr. Farrell Fand of Maplewood Junior High School, Maplewood, N.J., and Mr. Arthur L. Pepin of the Buckley High School in Hartford. Composition was taught by Mr. Timothy Scott of Kent School, Kent, Conn., and Mr. Christopher Getman of the Hotchkiss School, Lakeville, Conn. Experienced tutors were Mrs. Farrell Fand and Mrs. Timothy Scott.

Boys were housed in New Dorm and Rumsey Hall, and there was a full slate of sports activities which included a lot of swimming.

COMMENCEMENT 1969 Marvelwood’s 19 seniors were graduated in exercises held on Friday, June 6, and Saturday, June 7. After a dinner

for the graduating class, their guests, the trustees, and the faculty, the traditional Baccalaureate Service was held in

the First Church. The Reverend Ronald Cebik officiated and the sermon was given by the Reverend Henry K. Yordon of the First Congregational Church of Norwalk.

With ideal weather prevailing, Saturday’s commencement exercises were held at eleven o’clock on the

Marvelwood Green, with Mr. Bodkin officiating. The higlilight of the ceremonies was an address by Dr. Albert

Bush-Brown, distinguished educator and a Marvelwood trustee and father. He spoke on what he called

our

scrambled sense of priorities,” and called on the younger generation to participate in the unscrambling and to tliink of their colleges as laboratories for the study of social change.

Class President Dale Baker delivered the Valedictory, and the ceremonies ended with the traditional ringing of the Piper Victory Bell by Calhoun Hall.
