THE PRISM 1968

FOREWORD This yearbook is intended to represent the full scope of activities here at Marvelwood by the class of 1968.

It is hoped that this Prism will serve as an accurate reminder of these activities and will bring back years from now many pleasant memories of our time spent here at school. As with all yearbooks, ours was ((

printed by money” and we would like to thank, on the staffs behalf, all the Advertisers who so generously

contributed to our publication.

Also we feel that thanks should go to the sports captains who were virtually drafted off the bench to write the articles on their sports, for the first time this year.

Finally we feel that our thanks should go to Mr. Michael Harper for his guidance and faithful help in the

completion of this book.

So here it is, The Prism for 1968. We hope it will be as enjoyable to read as it has been to produce.

It is an honor to have the Class of 1968 indicate its willingness to hear yet another message from the headmaster.

This transition class has heard many words from the headmaster about the future of Marvelwood School and has

watched this future evolve in physical terms. The charter members of the Class of 1968 arrived on a campus where there were no new buildings. The site of the present Monroe classroom building and the new dormitory was a multi-purpose field. The Piper Victory Bell, now such an outstanding landmark and integral part of the school, had at that time just been erected. That year’s senior class was only the second class not to contain any charter member of the school’s student body, the faculty still included one member of the original group as well as ourselves.

Now — five years later for the Class of ’68 nearly twelve years after Marvelwood opened its doors, the life of

the school is permeated by ideas, customs and attitudes that have grown with the Class of ’68.

Thank you Pete and Bill Spalding for producing, with the help of Mr. Harper and your staff, another attractive yearbook. One that, this time, mirrors the life of a class that has had a significant effect on a school in its most formative years.

AS SECOND FORMERS

The class of ’68 has in its five year association with the School blazed a glorious trail across the pages of Marvelwood history. The first inkling of this future greatness caine in the fall of 1963 when the first members of the class made their appearances. The class at that time consisted of Howard Zeder, Pete Lambertus, Steve Spring, Phil Sandifer, Cleve Storrs, and three who, amazingly enough, lasted tlirougli to the bitter end. Bill Loomis, Duncan Rice, and Skip Young.

Many new traditions were formed that year. One which tended to be quite dangerous to the innocent bystander was a daily run down Pine Street by Young, Rice, and Storrs, who were fleeing from the wrath of Mr. Chris Smith.

Mr. Smith used to enjoy venting his anger by pounding on the second formers with a baseball bat, and consequently this instrument of torture also accompanied Mr. Smith on these daily runs.

Earlier in the year Zeder challenged Piper dorm master Mr. Brown to a wrestling match. The trouble with this was that Mr. Brown lost. Heady with success, the underformers soon ran amok, and the seniors had to quell the riot with a fire extinguisher, soaking the entire group.

Tills riotous bunch caused so much havoc that almost any combination of them was unbearable for any length of time. Resulting from the numerous dorm changes of that year was the first of the Triumphant Trippies.

AS FRESHMEN

Next year, when the class became freshmen, there were, to everyone’s surprise, surviving members. This group consisted of Storrs, Young, Rice, Grusauskas, Loomis, and Zeder. They were joined by new arrivals Steve Myers, Cleave Horton, John Peck, Steve Richards, Bill Spalding, Tom Floyd, Jim Ford, Toby Brown, Dave Robinson, and Sandy Brown.

This was the year of the great shaving cream fights of Marvelwood’s historic past. There were also some pretty rough days; Dave Robinson often conspired to send people through doors without opening them, and Floyd christened Richards with a black eye which lasted for some time.

The Third Form also excelled in classroom activi­ ties. One day an explosion issued forth from the I.P.S. Memorial class. Smoke bellowed from the classroom, and miraculously no one was hurt. From this time on, however, cracks have shown forth, and the ceiling of the room has glistened with glass, all testifying to the industriousness of the class and their fearless leader at the head of the room, Mr. Galati.

The most memorable contribution the class made to Marvelwood’s many atliletic endeavors of that year was the invention of many new songs. These wonderful melodies used to be heard echoing forth from the jeep RICHARDS WITH BLACK EYE coming and going to and from Mohawk. Thereafter Group V gained many happy new members.

New additions in the Sophomore Class were John D’Amico, Charlie Blair, Pete DeYoe, Kevin Conboy, Bill Thomas, Pete Spalding, Steve Meyer, Jon Gordon, Ted LaFarge, Martin Agnew, Steve Mencacci, Dave Swett, Dave Warner, Cliris Brackett, Brian Campbell, Mike Sigman, and Nick Perrotti.

Obviously such a class was a threat to everything on campus. Jim Ford and Cleave Horton ruled the tliird floor of Calhoun. Lacrosse against Mr. Bodkin’s apart­ ment door was common place, as was shaking the building by Horton’s hifi set. Another odd occurrence was the electrocution of anyone foolish enough to touch the third floor doorknob, as it was wired to a 20,000 volt model T spark coil. Luckily tlie current was of a low enough value to do no permanent damage, except possibly to ego.

On a less shocking note, at the other end of the campus D’Amico and Warner outfitted the Flynns’ dog Candy with a new wardrobe when they dressed her in an old pair of underwear with her tail hanging out. It was very amusing to watch her walk about in this outfit.

The Phillips Country Club was started in earnest that year. The water fights, window-breaking parties, and winter sun-bathing parties in the snowbanks surrounding the building made it well worth the expense incurred in repairs by the members. Fantastic rumbles, with and without Mr. Smith, the dorm master, were also an appealing feature of life in Phillips. That year there was also formed there the first of the Truly Triumphant Trippies, this one consisting of Bill Spalding, Richards, and Myers.

THE UPPER EORMS

As Juniors we took on Dave Culhane, Larry Dana, and Jay Wuebbold, whose social conscience and habit of wrestling with his intellect so impressed us that we elected him president of the class for our final year.

Fifth Form year was the Year of the Clubs. Phillips Country Club went into its second year, featuring the Truly Triumphant Trippie of Blair, Wuebbold, and Mencacci; also the Garden Club and lacrosse games in the front hall.

Spalding as sponsors. It featured tennis, squash, lacrosse, sun bathing, and one of the finest restaurants in Cornwall.

The third club, the Chris-a-Go-Go, was known for its niglit life. Among other activities was Sandy Brown’s demonstration of his scissors grip. In fact the club was so active that the walls came and went so often that the decor seemed to change every week. D’Amico and Culhane fell into the habit of taking midnight walks from the club to Calhoun, where they once banded with the natives to make snowmen to block doors the morning before winter vacation.

This was also the year of the “loss and recovery” of Horton, Bill Spalding, and Ford by Mr. Smitli at the movies, and of the Great Library Move to Calhoun. The SOUND invaded Cornwall and is remembered in its modern reincarnation (we did so too learn some big words in English) as THE GREAT BICYCLE CRASH OF 1948.

With the coming of the Sixth Form year the class assumed some needed sense of responsibility. The only new Monster was Bob Fitter, who was immediately incorporated into the band and cross country team. The only new club Skip and Snowmobile 55

was the Rocking R. Ranch (Rumsey). Its features were the Psychedelic Senior Lounge, the restaurant, tíre wall-to-wall bathroom music, and the Infirmary parties. Another Inno­ vation was the padded cell in the Rumsey basement, otlierwise known as the recording studio.

Other experiences such as D’Amico’s attempt at being a flying nun during fifth period study hall will remain etched in our memories. This, to top off our careers, was the year of the GREAT ROOM CHANGE, bees, broken-down busses, Bruehl’s fire, and broken greenhouse glass. More seriously, it was the first year without a Second Form and the first with the New Dorm.

Next year most of us will go off to college, then on to various careers in various places. Probably we will never be together as a group again. Jointly we will have spent seventy-nine years — an average of more than three apiece — at Marvelwood, and no matter where the future may lead, no one of us will be untouched by our years here. Most of us will look back upon these years as good ones and say “That’s where we grew up.”

Every team once in a while experiences what is called growing pains and this is what happened to the Marvelwood Soccer Team this year. The team’s record was a dis­ appointing 1-9-1. Although the record was depressing, the team showed good hustle and determination throughout the season. The defense of the team did an excellent job in keeping the opposition from scoring more than they did. Kevin Conboy was a superb goalie and he received the Most Valuable Player award for the sport. The discouraging thing about the team was the weak offense.

CANTERBURY The first game of the season was played at Canterbury on September 30th. Even though the team lost by a score of 3-1, it played a good game. Skip Young scored the only goal for Marvelwood during the third period when he connected on a direct kick from 30 yards out. That was Marvelwood’s finest quarter of the game, for they outshot Canterbury. Kevin Conboy played a fine game in the goal despite a minor injury.

WOOSTER On October 4 the Varsity Soccer Team traveled to Danbury, Connecticut to play Wooster. The Varsity lost a heartbreaking contest in overtime with a score of 3-2.

Wooster scored the first two goals in the first period and Marvelwood scored the tying goals in the second half. Jon Noyes scored our two goals. Wooster managed to break the tie in the first overtime, giving them the game. Marvel wood did however outshoot Wooster with a total of 27 to 21.

SALISBURY Saturday, October 7, the team played its traditional rival, Salisbury, here on its own field. Salisbury scored their goals during the second and third quarters and Skip Young scored Marvelwood’s goal in the fourth with a penalty kick. The final score was 3-1. The score book shows us that the number of shots taken was almost equal to Salisbury’s (26-23) but Conboy was kept busier making 22 saves to their 12.

MILLBROOK October 12 was the day of the game against Millbrook here at Marvelwood, Our Varsity was greatly outplayed in this game for its record of shots was 13 to 32 for Millbrook. If it had not been again for goalie Conboy, the score would have been greater than 3-0, for he made 20 saves to Millbrook’s 7.

AVON October 14 brought Parents’ Weekend and the Avon Varsity to the fields of Marvelwood. Again the players were plagued by the condition of the field and the spectators watched in a drizzle. In the first period, Jon Noyes scored for us with an unassisted kick from just outside the goalie box. The Avon team then fouglit back, scoring a single goal in the third period and then two more in the final quarter.

FORMAN The Varsity traveled to Forman School on October 18. They played their game in a torrential downpour and cold temperatures. Skip Young scored for Marvelwood on a penalty kick to tie up the game. It was in the last few minutes of the second overtime that the winning goal splashed into the goal for Forman.

HOTCHKISS J.V. October 25 presented the same wet weather but brought the first victory to the Varsity team. Jim Ford scored the only goal in tlie game during the second period when he received the ball on a long pass to the riglit from Brian Campbell. The Varsity managed to hold off the rest of the opposition’s 20 shots at our goal.

GUNNERY The Varsity went to the Gunnery on their Parents’ Day, Oct. 28, to play a disappointing game. For the first three periods of the game there were no scores for either team. Finally, in the last quarter Gunnery fired a goal into the top of our goal. Our defense managed to hold back their line. Our shots numbered 24 to their 17.

WATKINSON The Varsity played Watkinson School in West Hartford on November 1. They were beaten by the strong offensive line with a score of 2-0. Their first goal was made in the first period by a short dribbler into tlie goal, the second was in the third from a penalty shot. Again the defense did their share in fending off 16 shots from them compared to our 23.

LENOX November 4 brought Lenox, rain, and a very muddy field for the game with the Varsity. Lenox slipped the first period goal past our defense and their second period score with a side shot not far from the goal line. The goalie Keven Conboy saved a slippery 22 shots from the Lenox line. They took 36 shots to our 13.

WESTMINSTER On November 8, Westminster came to play us in our last game of the season. The water on the field had turned to ice and it was snowing lightly throughout the game. Marvel­ wood outshot the other team with a 39 to 17 tally but the score ended up in a hard fought one-to-one tie. Ford scored our goal on a garbage shot in the first period.

Westminster scored in the third period. The game dragged into a cold double overtime with no scoring. And so ended our season.

The Cross Country season was exceptional in that the team turned in the best record in Marvelwood history. Mr. Dunans was of great help to Captain Horton and to the other team members as well. His unselfish devotion and faitli in the small squad was the most important asset it had. One might think that being a small group would be a disadvantage.

Well, it was. But somewhere the team found a spark that a winning team needs.

STORM KING The Marvelwood Cross Country team started its season with a victory when it played host to Storm King School October 10. It was the first competitive run on the new 2.68-mile course. The race began at a very fast pace with Marvelwood’s Bob Fitter leading the first mile, but before the return run from the valley, one of Storm King’s harriers was in the first five and he was leading. As the race concluded, a Storm King runner set a new course record of 16.17, beating the old time of 16.54 by Duncan Rice. Rice placed second, only two seconds behind the leader. Tliird, fourth, and fifth were all taken by Marvelwood veterans Dale Baker, Pete Spalding, and captain Cleave Horton, respectively.

The final score was Marvelwood 21 and Storm King 35.

LAURELCREST The Cross Country team won its second meet on October 14, 1967 against Laurelcrest Academy. Captain Cleave Horton did an excellent job of leading the team by placing first.

As they finished on the lower field, the team impressed the Parents’ Day crowd by letting only two of the opposing team into the top eiglit positions. Horton finished eight seconds ahead of the second man. Dale Baker was third, followed by Pete Spalding fifth, Duncan Rice sixth, and Larry Paddock seventh. The final score was Marvel wood 22, Laurelcrest 36, a victory by 14 points.

FORMAN In a heavy rain the team ran against Forman on October 18. Tliis was one of the most decisive victories of the season as the score was a perfect 15 to 43, victory of 28 points.

Horton was again first, followed by Baker, Rice, Sullivan and Spalding. All were within 16 seconds of each other and undisturbed by the Forman runners.

AVON The next race was on October 21. It was the first loss of the season for the team.

Avon runners performed well for their Parents’ Day games by taking the first 3 places.

The score was Marvelwood 36 to Avon’s 20. The harriers were aided by one of the school’s best. Skip Young. Even so, the Avon team showed that it was too good for us.

Young was fourth, followed by Horton fifth, and Baker seventh.

LENOX J.V. October 25 was another setback for the team. They were defeated by 7 points by the Lenox J.V.’s the score was 32 to 25. Horton placed second in tlie meet, four seconds behind their lead man. Rice placed fourth and a newcomer, Richard Sullivan, placed sixth. The team might have done better if runner Bruce Elgood had not been injured in the run against Forman.

GUNNERY The Gunnery played host to the team on October 28. Dale Baker placed first in the meet and Horton followed close behind in second place. Rice, Pete Spalding, and Sullivan were fourth, fifth, and sixth respectively. Even though the team was down two runners, they still managed to beat Gunnery by 20 points. The final score was 18 to 38.

WINCHESTER The next chance at victory came on November 1 against Winchester. Duncan Rice finished second behind Young’s old 2.68-mile competition course record of 15.27 minutes. The first Winchester runner set the new course record of 14.57, 32 seconds ahead of Rice. Horton placed third while Spalding and Baker placed fifth and sixth. The final score was a pleasing 23 to 35.

HOTCHKISS J.V. The day of the match was wet and cold and the Marvelwood runners were slow. The captain of the Hotchkiss seconds had a 13-second victory over second place captain Horton. Paddock, in fourth place, was the only other runner in the top 5, 33 seconds behind the winner. The final score was Marvelwood 33 to Hotchkiss’ 22.

TRI-MEET The last run of the season has a tri-meet with Gunnery Varsity and Trinity-Pawling Varsity at the Gunnery. Gunnery placed first over Trinity-Pawling, and both teams beat Marvelwood by a score of 15 to 50.

The losing races were all close; we miglit have won some that we lost and lost some that we won. In the hardest races the team always put up a good fight and there is no doubt that it always did its best. With Larry Paddock, Bruce Elgood, Richard Sullivan, and Captain Dale Baker returning as a backbone, Marvelwood can look forward to another strong squad next year.

With only two starters from last year’s team returning, this was a building year for hockey. Wlien the annual meeting was called by coach van Beuren veterans Dave Bush-Brown and Captain Charlie Blair were joined by only seventeen other candidates, including three seniors. Several boys were new to the game and only tliirteen actually played in games. For the first time in several years practice was started before Christmas vacation with a workout at the Canterbury rink. In addition, Bob Holbrook, Steve Meyer, Clay Haskell, Tom Cosmus, and Blair spent five days at the Holiday Hockey Clinic at Kent.

WESTMINSTER J.V. In the opening contest, immediately after the Christmas vacation, not much could be expected of a team that was still in the process of getting organized. However, the team played Westminster on even terms for the first two periods, losing a close one 1-0 on a goal in the third period.

FORMAN The second game was played at home against Forman on January seventeenth. The first line, consisting of David Bush-Brown, Steve Mencacci, and Tim Gurney ruled the ice throughout. Bush-Brown had a field day, scoring six goals while Gumey got one and Mencacci was credited with four assists. Forman scored in the last minutes of the game and the final score was 10-1.

MILLBROOK J.V. On January 24 Marvelwood played host to the Millbrook J.V.’s on the Piper rink.

Once again the first line dominated the play, doing all tlie scoring for the home team.

Bush-Brown put Marvelwood ahead with a goal in tlie second period. In the final period Millbrook bounced back, to tie the score, 1-1. With only fifty-five seconds left, Tim Gurney scored the winning goal to make it 2-1.

WOOSTER Marvelwood next played host to Wooster before a Dance Weekend crowd. Wooster struck first, in the opening moments of the game, but Dave Warner tied the score in the first period with a slap shot from the blue line. The visitors managed to get another in the last period, and scored again with a few minutes left to play, making the final score 1-3 in favor of Wooster.

HOTCHKISS J.V. On January 31 the team was whomped soundly by a strong Hotchkiss team, 9-0.

Some credit should go to the defense, which received little help from the lines. Hotchkiss outshot the Blues 52 to 15 and goalie Blair managed to make no fewer than 41 saves.

CRANWELL This was a game that the team was capable of winning if it had not made several unnecessary errors. Marvelwood managed to outshoot Cranwell but their excellent goalie never let the puck get past him, making it 0-3.

LENOX Bush-Brown scored twice in the first minute but Lenox came right back with three goals. Bush-Brown tied it up with three seconds to go in the period and made two more in the next period. He hit again in the last period and was joined in the scoring column by Pete Ripley of the third Une Final score, 8-4.

SOUTH KENT J.V. This game was about even until the last period, each team taking about thirty shots.

However, South Kent slipped one past Blair in the last period, making it 0-1.

KENT J.V. On February 17 Kent whipped Marvelwood, 6-0. As in the Hotchkiss game, the defense got little help from the line and Kent outshot the Blues 33-20.

CANTERBURY Scoring three in the first period and three more in the last, the Canterbury Varsity rolled over Marvelwood although the teams made about the same number of shots.

WATKINSON On February 23 the team played its final outside game against a weak Watkinson club, winning 15-0. Both Gurney and Bush-Brown got hat tricks and Bruce Janelli scored twice.

ALUMNI The alumni were beaten 13-2 in an official game. Jeff Miller ’66 made both goals for the oldsters, while School goalie Clay Haskell turned traitor and made eleven saves for the visitors.

The team enjoyed excellent ice this year, and would like to thank coaches vanBeuren and Giesing for making the season a success. While the 5-7-0 record wasn’t as good as some in the past, it can be said that team members enjoyed themselves immensely.

This year Marvelwood had one of the finest ski teams in school history. The team consisted of tri-captains Duncan Rice, Cleave Horton, and Ted LaFarge, along with Pete DeYoe, Pete Spalding, Skip Young, Jim Ford, and next year’s captain Danny Reid.

Except for Sophomore Reid, the entire team consisted of Seniors, which made it an extremely experienced team. This enabled us to win many more meets than we miglit have.

SALISBURY On January 17 the Varsity Ski Team tied their first meet of the year with Salisbury.

Ice dominated the entire course and there was a cold wind blowing across the slopes.

Because of the icy conditions, Marvelwood lost three of tlieir best racers. Pete DeYoe did a fine job and took first place. Duncan Rice was the only tri-captain to finish, placing third for the entire meet. The score was 93.3 for both teams.

DARROW & MILLBROOK Marvelwood faced its toughest rivals on January 24 and came out on top. The meet was scored as two different races. The final score of Marvelwood vs. Darrow was 96.2 to 75.9, and of Marvelwood vs. Millbrook 98.3 to 87.8. The course was on Darrow’s steep slope behind the school. At first, it did not look good but Dan Reid placed first for Marvelwood. Duncan Rice and Ted LaFarge placed second and third, respectively.

KENT On January 31 the varsity beat Kent at Catamount. The final score was 91.8 to 82.2.

The conditions were incredibly icy but the Marvelwood team managed to take the top three positions in the meet. The Marvelwood racers who placed were Duncan Rice, Dan Reid, and Ted LaFarge taking first, second, and third respectively. Kent’s first two racers took fourth and fifth.

BERKSHIRE Marvelwood lost its first race of the season to the Berkshire team on February 7. The final score represented a poor day for the team. Marvelwood 82.3 to Berkshire’s 99.6.

Tri-captain Ted LaFarge had two excellent runs and finished fourth in the meet. Dan Reid finished seventh after a fall. Duncan Rice fell in the last part of the course and finished ninth. Tri-captain Cleave Horton turned in the fastest time for the entire meet after falling on his first run.

SALISBURY Rematch On February 13 Marvelwood reraced Salisbury at Butternut Basin. Marvelwood proved itself superior after trying for a victory in early January. The final score was 95.4 to 89.3. There was a great cold wind blowing up the long course, but the team was still fast. The final placement showed that Captains Rice, Horton, and LaFarge had taken first, second, and third respectively. Dan Reid finished fifth overall in tlie meet.

KINGSWOOD The Marvelwood Ski Team bowed down to the Kingswood team on February 14. The conditions were ideal but the top racer, Duncan Rice, fell on his second run. The final score of the meet was Kingswood 96.8 to Marvelwood’s 89.7 After the first runs, we had the first four places in the meet, but most of the points were lost with falls on the second runs. The final placing was Ted LaFarge second, Dan Reid third, and Jim Ford fifth.

HOTCHKISS J.V. The last meet of the season came on February 20. The Marvelwood skiers lost the meet by a score of 96.5 to 91.2. Ice greatly hampered the teams efforts. Dan Reid zipped down the course to take first place followed by Pete DeYoe in third and Ted LaFarge in fourth. Cleve Horton turned in the fastest time for the race on his first run but had trouble with his bindings on his second one.

CONARD H.S. On April 18 the Blues traveled to West Hartford to open the season with a 4-3 victory.

Marvelwood was off to an early lead with scores by midfielders Booth Hemingway and Bill Loomis, and Skip Young made it 3-0 in the tliird quarter. Conard finally snuk one past goalie Duncan Rice, but Loomis scored again before Conard found its scoring punch near the end.

WILLISTON The strong Williston team dominated the first quarter and led 1-0. The second period was a repeat, although attackman Dick Noyes managed to even the score. Middy Hemingway scored unassisted in the second half, but the strong Williston offense proved too tough and Marvel wood suffered a disheartening loss, 12-2.

DARROW In the Darrow game the Blues jumped into the lead when Tim Gurney swatted in a loose ball and Pete DeYoe scored on an assist from Loomis. Darrow tied it up, but in the second quarter Marvelwood again went on the attack as Noyes scored and attackman Dave Bush-Brown fed Skip Young who made the final goal. Marvelwood’s defense, Captain Steve Richards, Kevin Conboy, and Brian Campbell, plus interchangeable goalies Steve Myers and Duncan Rice held Darrow helpless in the second half. The final score was Marvelwood 4, Darrow 2.

TRINITY FROSH Marvelwood led Trinity 1-0 in the first quarter on a goal by Skip Young. This proved too good to last and the visitors picked up four goals to end the half. They added one to start the second half and six more in the last quarter. The Blues’ time in the penalty box was equivalent to two periods of play, which prevented any sustained offensive.

TAFT On Friday before mid-term break the team looked in vain for a victory. The first period went scoreless as both teams missed the cage repeatedly. Taft broke the ice early in the next period witlr two scores in rapid succession. The Blues’ only score came when Hemingway took the second half faceoff and scored. Taft made two more early in the last period.

CHOATE Against Choate, Marvelwood improved greatly. Gurney opened the scoring and five minutes later middy Danny Reid scored his first of the year. In the second half D’Amico and Richards, who had moved up to attack, made tlieir first goals of the season and Marvelwood continued to bomb the goalie. Both Blue goalies played exceptionally well in this well-deserved 7-2 win.

AVON Marvelwood earned - and needed — this win to stay in the C Division race with Darrow. Richards opened the scoring but Darrow responded with three quick goals. Then the Blues started rolling, DeYoe opened the bombardment that continued until the final whistle. Total Blue shots were somewhere in the thirties; shots that passed the goalie came to 16.

WESTMINSTER When Marvelwood challenged the strong Westminster Varsity on May 15, Richards started the action with two

minutes gone in the first period. Westminster chalked up four before Brooks Paul and Young tallied to make it 3-4.

The half ended at 4-4 as Skip scored again on a corner shot. Westminster scored when the Blues were a man down on defense at the beginning of the second half and made it 6-4 as the game ended.

LOOMIS

On Dance Weekend Loomis visited Cornwall for an extremely exciting game. The visitors began by rocketing two past goalie Myers. Reid retaliated with a shot from midfield which was matched by two from Loomis. Beginning the second half, Loomis again hit pay dirt twice, one matched by Young’s goal assisted by Bush-Brown. The rest of the game was spent between the restraining lines. While 6-2 doesn’t sound too close, the Blue offense worked well,

taking twenty shots. The defense also did well to hold the quick-moving Loomis offense to six goals.

KINGSWOOD

Kingswood’s early season had been poor, as they lost every game except to Avon. However, they dominated the first quarter, slipping three past goalie Rice. Young scored once, but his effort was countered immediately by two more from Kingswood. The second half was a repeat of the first; the Blues’ offense never got started and passes

were missed and ground balls went to Kingswood. The defense let two more slip by and the final score was a discouraging 7-1.

HOTCHKISS The Blues’ poor showing against Kingswood was redeemed against Hotchkiss. Eager for his second goal of the

season, Bush-Brown dodged his man beliind the cage and came around to score. The Marvelwood defense held until late in the third quarter when a surprise Hotchkiss team got one past Myers whose goal tending prevented what might have been a liigh-scoring game. Hotchkiss scored again near the end, making the final score 3-1 in favor of

Hotclikiss.

Captain Richards commented that he felt honored to have been a member of this year’s team which was always

spirited, aggressive, and, most important, helped by high morale among the players. As for the season record, it might as well have been 7-4 instead of 4-7.

Richards added, “I jvould like to personally thank Coach King Hurlock and Coach Robert Bodkin. Through Mr. Hurlock’s exceptional coaching ability and devotion to the team, and through Mr. Bodkin’s support we made out better than the record would indicate.” He added that his only regret was the length of the season. “It all went by so quickly,” he said. “From the early days in Baltimore to the last whistle at Hotchkiss it only seemed like two weeks, but it was a most beneficial and exciting two weeks.”

Under Mr. Wadlow’s leadership the courts were put in good condition and clay was added before the season started. Captain Steve Mencacci and Scott Young were the only returning players, and Jim Ford was lured away from lacrosse. Along with five new boys, they made up the first eight players on the team.

Mr. Wadlow brought his team home from Hartford with a victory over Watkinson in the first match. The score was 6-3. All three doubles teams, consisting of Mencacci and Gutzwa, Ford and Young, and Kornreich and Asch,

won their matches.

After matches with Berkshire and Gunnery were rained out, the season resumed with a disappointing loss to

Laurelcrest, 9-0. The visitors had a good team and it is interesting to note that their first man was a freshman.

To our surprise, Cranwell brought only five men for the next match, but they were able to eke out a 3-2 victory nevertheless. Salisbury proved another close match, the visitors taking home a 5^ win over Marvelwood. On Parents’

Day, May 11, rain again forced cancellation of a match, this time against Darrow and after five singles matches had been played.

Against Forman the team suffered another disheartening loss, this time by 6-3. However, Mencacci, Young, Gutzwa, Kornreich, and Asch all performed well. The sixth outing, this time on Dance Weekend, provided a close

win over Avon, 5-4.

The final match was a disappointing loss to South Kent, 9-0. The young Marvelwood team was again up against

much more experienced players.

Marvelwood looks forward to an improved record next season, as six starters are returning. Many other prospects are expected to go out for the team, so the future looks comparatively rosy.

This has been an exceptional year for Mar-

velwood sports. Many personal and team goals were attained and new standards set.

In the fall we had an undefeated J.V. soccer team the first in the school’s soccer

history. The Varsity conducted itself well; in spite of a losing season, it never gave up and showed real spirit throughout. Cross country completed the first winning season in its short history.

Winter brought tremendous enthusiasm for

skiing and despite some poor weather con­

ditions the team maintained its pace through the season, sending one of its members on to high ranking in the Tri-State races. Hockey enthusiasts showed

dedication, rebuilding and maintaining the rink for themselves, under able leadership from their coach.

Tennis has had a somewhat shaky past at Marvelwood, but this year saw fresh new interest. The courts were resurfaced by the team and coach. New talent was developed and will show up in the record in coming years.

Lacrosse players had plenty of hustle. With Marvelwood’s modest supply of manpower, the Varsity held its own in competition with the major school teams.

The School has kept a high pitch of enthusiasm and drive in its sports program. Tliis comment is not just the traditional self pat on the back at year’s end, but a tribute to a job well done.

Upon entering Marvelwood each boy is assigned to one of the four Divisions, and he will remain

a member through his career at the school. After each grouping and marking period, boys are graded not only by marks in courses, but also for effort, activities, and citizenship. The number of

points per boy is worked out and the Division with the highest average receives some reward such as a night out. This year the winning divisions have seen such movies as “Reflections in a Golden Eye,

This is essentially a merit system which gives every boy an equal chance to show how he can

best contribute to his Division and win points for it.

Now in its second year, the Blue Key has been fulfilling its purpose in representing the best

elements of Marvelwood. Among its duties around the school, the Blue Key helps out by greeting visiting parents and acting as general guides. It also helps the Admissions Committee by conducting

tours of the campus for prospective students and their parents. In addition, this year members of

the group escorted members of the “Kentettes” to dinner before their singing performance.

In an Assembly program before Cliristmas vacation Mr. Henry Pennell talked to the student body about his summer volunteer work with the VISTA program in Alabama. He discussed the problems of illiteracy and how deficient education affects the lives of many

poor people in the South and in urban ghettos. VISTA has many projects of the sort he

participated in, where one can help educate the underprivileged and at the same time gain an enjoyable work experience.

At a meeting of class officers Jay Wuebbold proposed that Marvelwood organize a

group to work with underprivileged children, and with Mr. Pennell’s help arrangements were made to tutor fourth and fifth grade children in academic trouble in Waterbury.

The Marvelwood boys spent Tuesday afternoons in Waterbury, being paired off with students who need help. Each pair worked on whatever seemed worthwhile, activities ranging from playing with crayons to discussing something the younger boy has read.

Each child was encouraged to keep a diary as a basis for the next week’s talk.

The volunteers are to be thanked for their enterprise. They made a real contribution.

The Outdoors Club was established in order to provide students with an opportunity to develop skills in hunting, fishing, and camping, and to use these skills on outings in the Litchfield County area. The Club is set up so that four new

members will be taken in each year; one from each class. The new members must be elected by unanimous vote of the existing members and they will be judged on the basis of interest, skill, and trustworthiness. Essentially, club members are expected to provide their own hunting, fishing and camping equipment. Linder the

leadership of Mr. Robert Kay, the club has made many trips this year and has become a respected group around campus.

The Sports Car Club is another new organization formed this year under the leadersliip of Mr. Michael vanBeuren. The club’s goals are to increase the technical knowledge of its members in the areas of sports car design and operation. The

members of the club discuss race results of the movies that they are shown.

Membersliip in the club is maintained at a level of nine persons to allow a greater flexibility of activities to be held and to ease the transportation. Some of the activities this year have included movies and trips to the New York Auto Show and Lime Rock Park. The interest in the Sports Car Club this year will uphold the club’s status in the future.

This was the first year that Marvelwood’s Military History Club has gotten into full swing. Mr. John D. Flynn has organized a group of interested boys who have carried out actual battles with Mr. Flynn’s miniature soldiers in the basement of Dunn Dorm. In the coming years, the club will extend its membership to underformers as well as seniors. Should the interest in the Military History Club continue the way it has this year, it will be one of the stronger functioning clubs on campus.

The Monogram Club was founded this year by Mr. E. Kingdon Hurlock, Director of Athletics. The club consists of all boys who have received at least two letters in one sport or a single letter in two sports. Captains of varsity teams are automatically members. Club members are distinguished by white letter sweaters which may be worn in place of jackets.

There are several purposes of the club. First is recognition for the school’s leading athletes. Another is systematizing the athletic program, in which the club may propose changes. The members also help set standards that must be met to qualify for varsity letters.

The captains of varsity teams for the current season are the officers of the club, which, in addition to officers, has two functioning committees. The Spirit Committee organizes rallies and arranges for posters, while the Reception

Committee is in charge of greeting visiting teams and conducting teas after games.

THE SUMMER SCHOOL j

Four years after its founding. Marvelwood’s Summer School of Reading and English opened on June 27 with a

capacity enrollment of forty-five boys. Whereas the first student body had been drawn mostly from local schools

who were familiar with Mr. Bodkin’s work in reading instruction, last summer’s boys came from thirteen states and one foreign country. While the school does not usually accept applicants from the regular Marvelwood winter

sessions, for the first time it did take some boys who were about to enter Marvelwood in September.

Essentially, the school is based on the methods of the famous New York University Reading Institute. During the

first two days, batteries of tests are given, and students placed in the various sections according to their levels of 1

achievement. They work in small sections, under the supervision of trained reading teachers. Each boy is responsible

to an adviser who checks on his progress at weekly faculty meetings. With a student-faculty ratio of four to one, the work is practically on an individual basis.

Last summer’s school was headed by Mr. Thomson L. Leiper of Pittsburgh, Pa., and by Mr. John Flynn of the regular Marvelwood faculty. The staff also included Mr. Philip Bianco of the New Lebanon (Pa.) High School. Mr.

Jerry Margulis of the Columbia High School, South Orange, N.J., Mr. Joseph Condon of The Hill School. Pottstown, Pa., Mr. Timothy Scott of Kent School, Mr. Jay Stroud of Marvelwood, and Mr. Farrell Fand of the Maplewood (N.J.) Junior High School. Psychometrician Ray Clutier of Litchfield was in charge of testing. Dr. Josephine Ross of

Sherman was psychological consultant, and Mr. Michael vanBeuren of Marvelwood directed physical education activities. Mr. Bodkin was at the school in an advisory capacity and found time to do some teaching.

While the Summer School will probably remain small, it is most gratifying to realize that it already has a nationwide reputation for excellence in its field, to such an extent that thirty-five other schools recommended it to their students last summer.

Instead of one play with several acts as produced by the Marvelwood Drama Society in past years, Mrs. Bodkin chose three one-act plays to be performed in the round this year. The plays were produced for the student body on

March 7 and for seniors, faculty, townspeople, and parents on the following evening. They were performed in the School Assembly Room.

The Pedestrian, which was written by the noted science fiction writer Ray Bradbury, has a cast of three actors. It is a story of the world of the future, where the machine and television control people’s lives. Extensive sound effects and scenery were called for

The Tell-Tale Heart, dramatized by Luella E. McMahon from Edgar Allen Poe’s short story, portrays a murderer whose own sense of guilt makes him reveal his crime to the police.

The Informer is from the book by Liam O’Flaherty and takes place during the time of the Irish Rebellion. The central figure is a member of a gang who betrays one of his comrades for financial reward.

The returning actors from last year’s production, Steve Myers, John Brustrom, Charlie Blair, Henry Margenau, Jay Wuebbold, and Kevin Conboy were joined this year by Chris Wilson, Pierce Schmidt, Sandy Cameron, Les Ryon, Dale Baker, Bill Spalding, Skip Young, Mike Cassidy, and Nick St. Clair. Bill Spalding was stage manager and Steve Mencacci was picked for the third year to act as prompter.

The Great Bicycle Crash of 1948,” a worthy successor to former groups such as “The Thumb,” “Us,” “Meadow Muffins,” and “Sound.” Wooden cages were placed on both sides of the band to give dancers an opportunity to demonstrate

The weekend officially started at noon on Saturday, although some of the girls arrived

earlier. Dates were settled in their various rooms in the New Dorm*and in the homes of Mr. and Mrs. John Callioun, Mr. and Mrs. Christopher

Smith, Mr. and Mrs. Scott Walker, and Mr. and Mrs. Ronshaugen.

The hockey game against Woo­ ster started at 2:30 and was at­

tended by many couples, all being disappointed to see the Varsity lose a close one. A tea was held for weekend couples and the visiting team before the girls went back to their rooms to dress for the evening festivities.

At 5:45 the Bodkins gave a reception for the visitors, before a turkey dinner in the candlelit dining room. The proper atmos­ phere for the occasion was achieved by red-jacketed underformers who acted as waiters.

The dance was held at the Mo­ hawk Ski Lodge, and as usual the

“Great Bicycle Crash” proved a great success. In addition to a large fireplace with glowing embers, an assortment of colored lights aimed at the band provided fitting decor­

ations for the season. Chaperones were Mr. and Mrs. Durrans, Mr. and Mrs. van Beuren, Mr. and Mrs. Gesing, and, later in the evening,

Mr. and Mrs. Bodkin.

At 12:30 the boys took their dates back to the campus and a small, select party for seniors and their dates was a perfect ending for a funfilled evening.

from nine to ten. At ten there was a bus waiting to take couples wishing to ski up to Mohawk.

Conditions were good and there was plenty of skiing before lunch at the Lodge cafeteria and

return to the school. In the afternoon the girls packed and said goodbye to their dates, tlius

ending a memorable weekend.

The Spring Invitational Dance was a bit smaller than the winter affair, although tliirty-five beauteous Maidens—including eiglit dates for seniors—braved the rustic simplicity of Cornwall in the spring.

Senior dates were scheduled to arrive at noon on Friday, and a few watched practices for the tennis and lacrosse games on Saturday. Later on, couples went out for dinner and a movie. On Saturday morning the girls were permitted to accompany the seniors to class if they chose to.

Underform dates arrived around midday, and all visitors were settled in rooms in the New Dorm

soon after lunch.

Saturday afternoon saw sports activities on many fronts, the Varsity playing host to the Loomis team and the lacrosse J.Vs also competing against Loomis on Hubbard Field. The tennis team played Avon on its home courts.

After dinner in the Dining Hall, boys and their dates took a bus trip to the Cream Hill Lake >9

Country Club for their dance. Competing with the world-renowned "Bicycle Crash, etc.” was another band whose name remains a mystery—if it had any name. However, it is reliably reported that its members were Scott Young, Cliip Gutzwa, Rob McGowan, Jon Noyes, and Dick Noyes.

Refreshments were served until the bus left for the campus at 12:30.

Sunday breakfast was served from nine to ten for those who had the energy to get up that early. Later the boys and their dates went to Cream Hill Lake for a day of fun, frolic, and a picnic

lunch. All returned to Marvelwood in time for the girls to pack and bid the boys farewell in the early afternoon.

All in all, it was an outstanding year for social events. Again the van Beurens, Bodkins, and

Dance Committee must be thanked for making it such a success.

In his Valedictory Address, class president W. Jay Wuebbold said, in part:

“In my two years at Marvelwood I have found that one of the school’s greatest assets is the students. They have been congenial and a pleasure to attend school with. But I have found one major hang-up, an ultra apathetic attitude. This lack of concern is found not only in extracurricular activities, but also in events occurring outside the domain of Marvelwood. Unfortunately, this attitude exists not only here on our campus, but in all communities that are inhabited by affluent society. Analyzing this problem, I am afraid that the blame does not lie on the students, but that they have inherited tliis attitude from their parents.

Today’s affluent student has witnessed his father concerned only with self interests, while he sits back and lets others run the affairs of the community . . . ((

.. . Last night Father Wadhams told us exactly v/hat kind of a world we are facing. Because of an apathetic

attitude taken by the preceding generation we are inheriting a world full of illiteracy, starvation, and other social injustices. Had our parents’ generation done more than sit back on their laurels and let these conditions exist, we would be entering a far more promising future.

“But, fellow graduates, please do not “bag” the whole thing in despair. Take hope. Better yet, take a stand!
