Marshall has a long history of preparation for those who wish to become teachers. The college of Education and Professional Development (COEPD) has been training teachers since the 1860s. Elementary Education
Elementary Education students benefit from clinical experiences early in their program by observing and working directly with children.
Secondary Education
Middle and high school teachers help to prepare students to go on to college and/or enter the workforce. As a Secondary Education teacher, you’ll be teaching academic lessons as well as life skills to equip students (grades 7-12) with the knowledge and tools they need to succeed in life.

Graduate Studies

Education master’s degrees at Marshall enable licensed teachers to earn an advanced degree or an added endorsement. There are multiple opportunities to study in a 100% online format with a focus on Adult & Continuing Education, Counseling, Education, Literacy, School Leadership, Teaching, and Special Education. These credentials expand teacher skills and expertise, increasing their marketability and earning potential.
Advanced Degrees
Education Specialist Degrees (EdS) are available in Curriculum & Instruction in a virtual hybrid format. The School Psychology program is a hybrid program that has some face-to-face requirements.
Doctor of Education Degrees (EdD) are available in Curriculum & Instruction in a virtual hybrid format and in Educational Leadership in an online asynchronous format.

Career Opportunities
There is a shortage of teachers both in West Virginia and across the country.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics stated job growth in elementary education is expected to grow around 7%. COEPD graduates are licensed by the WV Department of Education and teach in county school systems across the state.
