Welcome To Marshall!

In 1837, Marshall University was formed in Huntington, West Virginia, as one of the region’s first public higher education institutions. Over the next 186 years, Marshall became a beacon for research, education and innovation by recognizing education as the great equalizer.

Students and community are of utmost importance to us, highlighted by University President Brad D. Smith’s departure from Silicon Valley. Now, he charts his alma mater’s path forward in the 21st Century. In its new era, Marshall is dedicated to “Marshall for all, Marshall forever."

We believe higher education should be within reach to all and are dedicated to growing student enrollment, not fees. Marshall is already named one of the most affordable universities in America, and our financial aid opportunities keep growing.

Marshall understands education is a lifelong pursuit. Anyone seeking knowledge will always have a home in our Herd, whether their goal is to receive a traditional education, to push forward in their career, or to learn hands-on in their future work environment.

We offer tailored, inclusive experiences for all of our students. We want them to dream bigger, deliver faster and define excellence, as we adapt, innovate and broaden our pathways to the workforce. Ranked in the top tier of the Best

National Universities by U.S. News and World Report, we are focused on providing world-class learning opportunities from our professors on a beautiful, award-winning campus.

“As goes Marshall, so goes Huntington,” means we understand our duty to serve the community in which we live.

Our R-2 “high research activity” Carnegie classification places us in the top 6% of all U.S. colleges and universities. Students and faculty work side by side to conduct meaningful research that makes a direct impact on Appalachia. Likewise, Marshall’s Early Assurance programs help qualified undergraduates start their careers in our schools of medicine, pharmacy and physical therapy, as well as our athletic training program. High school students are also offered a jump start through our Herd Academy, a path in which college courses can be taken for as low as $25 per credit hour.

Marshall University is committed to making the students the heroes in their own stories, starting with moments of their life.

Marshall University is a premier, regional research university with world-class facilities. We support an active and ambitious research agenda including modern DNA, digital forensics and biotechnology research labs.

The Marshall University Forensic Science Center’s forensic DNA laboratories conduct DNA databasing on convicted offenders for the West Virginia State Police Forensic Laboratory. DNA profiles of convicted offenders become part of a state and national searchable database.

R2 Designation

For the first time in its history, Marshall University has been selected as an “R2” research institution by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education.

This designation places Marshall among the top six percent of colleges and universities in the nation, and is the second-highest classification an institution can receive from the organization.

For its latest rankings, Carnegie surveyed more than 4,000 universities and put just 139 in the R2 category, which includes universities that confer at

least 20 research / scholarship doctorates annually and spend a minimum $5 million per year on research. With its R2 designation, Marshall joined the likes of universities such as Baylor, Wake Forest and Lehigh.

Marshall jumped up two levels with the new designation thanks to an increase in the number of research awards and doctoral dissertations. Research expenditures at Marshall have increased 35% over the past 2 1/2 years, from $23 million to $31 million, and are expected to climb even further this year.
