Editor’s Letter Who will you vote for?

No matter who it is, I hope you will be voting on May 7. In the last general election, around 39% of those who were eligible to vote didn’t bother - that’s a higher percentage than voted for any single party. Despite the shortcomings of our electoral system, I feel its incredibly important to cast my vote in elections, partly because many people fought for my right to do so, and partly because I feel I have no right to moan about anything if I haven’t bothered.

There is currently a campaign that suggests if you are exasperated with the system, that you should “Vote none”, ie spoil your ballot paper by writing “none of the above” on as at least then your vote will be counted and you will have made a statement.

Some people say “I’m not interested in politics”, but don’t seem to realise that most things in life are affected by them - education, work, tax, health, environment to name but a few. Our interviewee this month, Jim McLeod has an interesting explanation of what stopped him being apathetic about the right to vote - you can read the interview on page 6/7.

Jim McLeod Jim McLeod runs Marlborough Osteopathic Clinic in The Parade, Marlborough. He is married to Sarah, Financial Director for a property company in Pewsey, and they have a son Ben, who is 10.

They live in Marlborough.

You’re not from Marlborough originally, how did you end up here?

I was planning to start my own clinic, and as a family we wanted to move to this part of the country. (We were living in Reigate, Surrey at the time).

Marlborough kept popping up as an option, and it was probably a choice between here and Cirencester. What swung it was the building that became the clinic, as suitable premises in a good location are hard to find.

Number 10 The Parade was perfect for what I was looking for. It had previously been a hairdressers, and at one point an antiques shop (my patients have filled me in on its previous incarnations).

I’ve been here around 8 years now, and it’s been fantastic for both family and business.

We’ve made a great circle of friends, Sarah has a good job, and Ben is enjoying school, and just about to move up to St John’s.

Have you always been an Osteopath?

No, I studied Geophysics at University, and spent a large part of my 20s working as a Field Seismologist in the Oil Industry. I worked in oil exploration in the Middle East, mostly in Saudi Arabia, with a spell in Yemen, which even then wasn’t very stable.

(When I arrived to take up

my post I found that my predecessor had been shot – they didn’t tell me that at the interview!) I enjoyed the 5 years I worked in the field, but it was quite exhausting as we worked 6-7 weeks at a time, pretty much 24/7. We then got 2-3 weeks off – which gave a chance to travel if that was your thing. I did some of that, but after spending 7 weeks in a tent, I quite liked to come home to England for some home comforts and a bacon sandwich!

Why the change of career?

Field work is very demanding and quite isolating, so I didn’t want to do that long term – its fine when you are in your 20s, but when you want to settle down and have a family it’s not very compatible! I came back to the UK and worked on the commercial side of the oil industry, but wasn’t really satisfied. I decided to do an MBA with the hope that would help me work out what I wanted to do. It was actually visiting an osteopath myself for treatment that first piqued my interest – I’d spent so much time hunched over my computer at work that I’d developed an upper back problem, which eventually went ping when I was on holiday in Colorado. The flight

home was agony, and I finally decided to get it sorted. The osteopathy worked well for me, and it really sparked my interest and I decided to train as an osteopath myself.

Where did you train?

I trained at the British School of Osteopathy, which I chose because of its excellent academic record, and the strong clinical experience that they offered during the course. They have a very busy clinic, and we were taught by practising osteopaths, as well as academics. It meant that at the end of the 4 year degree course I had very good hands on experience (no pun intended!) This was in the late 90s when Osteopathy had just become regulated by The British Osteopathic Council.

After qualifying I gained further experience working as an associate at a clinic in Odiham in Hampshire, after which I decided to set up my own clinic.

What is Osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a system of diagnosis and treatment for a wide range of medical conditions. It works with the structure and function of the body, and is based on the

People principle that the well-being of an individual depends on the skeleton, muscles, ligaments and connective tissues functioning smoothly together. It has parallels with physiotherapy and chiropractic. It tends to be thought of as a treatment for back pain, (which probably does make up the majority of cases that I see), but can also be used for a wide range of conditions related to the musculoskeletal system.

You have other practitioners at the clinic?

Yes, the clinic has two treatment rooms, one of which is used by Christine Stiles, a Podiatrist, and also Anna Morshead, an acupuncturist. Both of these are complementary to Osteopathy, and sometimes it may be that one of these specialisms is more relevant to a condition than Osteopathy and vice versa.

Do you have a typical patient?

One of the things I like about Marlborough is the variety of people that I see. From teenagers to the elderly.

Because a lot of work is through recommendation I can sometimes suddenly have a run of a type – eg a rugby player comes to see me, and then he will recommend me to his team mates, suddenly I have a number of rugby playing clients…

I see teenagers because their lifestyles these days cause back and neck problems – carrying all their school books in a heavy bag over one shoulder, computing and texting all cause postural problems leading to pain, plus the more obvious sports injuries.

What’s your favourite part of the job?

Absolutely the people that

I deal with, I meet some fascinating people. I love working here as Marlborough and Wiltshire people generally have a nice attitude to life, which makes my job a pleasure.

What’s your least favourite?

I don’t like it when I can’t help someone with their problem, I will always be upfront with someone if I don’t think I can help, and will suggest a more suitable professional to see if necessary.

What do you do in your spare time?

My passion is cycling which I took up a few years ago. I can be described as a MAMIL (Middle Aged Man in Lycra), and spend quite a lot of time in the saddle. It can be an expensive hobby, as the optimum number of bikes is n+1, (where n is the number of bikes you’ve already got), and the cream that helps with saddle soreness can cost more than my wife’s face cream! Not to mention the obligatory Lycra…. Seriously though, it is a good way to maintain health, and as I also enjoy my annual ski holiday, I need to keep fit. I’ve done some long range rides – last year two friends and I did Marlborough to Anglesey in a day (210 miles – we got the train home); I’m planning a ride to Bruges later this year and also for my own indulgence I am going to attempt Land’s End to John O’Groats.

On the not so active front, I enjoy watching sport, particularly rugby (part of the reason Sarah doesn’t mind my cycling is that she says before that my hobby was sitting down and drinking beer) Sometimes that is in a stadium – the final day of the Six Nations tournament was very exciting this year –

even if England didn’t win the competition.

Where do you like to eat out locally?

We’re quite fond of a good Indian meal, and enjoy both The Palm and The Zaika Inn. We also like The Bell at West Overton. I also like the Food Gallery, we try and time our rides to include a stop there for sustenance! I also like Krumbz, who used to be a couple of doors down before they moved to Kennet Place.

They were really helpful with info when I first came to Marlborough.

Will you be voting in the May election?

Yes I will, although I’m not hugely political. I was fairly apathetic about voting until I realised that apathy can lead to unpleasant outcomes when in France voter apathy led to the extreme right wing party of Jean Marie Le Pen nearly gaining power a few years ago. It was heartening to see the more liberal French realise what might happen and come out in their droves at the final round of their voting process to make sure that didn’t happen.

What are your pet hates/ things you’d put in Room 101?

Bad coffee, blunt kitchen knives and people talking through a film in the cinema. Also banging doors – my dad was a carpenter and when I was very small decided to change all the door closures to the roller closers that were fashionable in the sixties.

Trouble was, he took all the old fittings off but never got round to putting the new ones on – so we had to live with the doors banging closed all the time.

He’s retired now and he still hasn’t got round to it!

100km ride in memory of Bobby Mum Harriet Cox is joining a 55 strong team of cyclists on a 100km bike ride to raise awareness of and help fund research into brain tumours.

Harriet and her husband Paul lost their 5 year old son, Bobby in July last year. Bobby, a pupil at Preshute school had been diagnosed just 2 ½ weeks before he died with a brain tumour known as a Medulloblastoma. The tumour was very aggressive and despite an operation and excellent care at the John Radcliffe Children’s hospital, Bobby was unable to fight against the rapid spread of his cancer.

Bobby’s Ride will take place on Sunday 24 May. A team of 55 cyclists including many colleagues, Elmhurst parents, family and friends will leave Marlborough College at 8am, heading east towards Peasemore and then north to Shrivenham before heading south back to Marlborough College, where the day will

finish with a celebration of their achievements.

Pinewood School are assisting Harriet in this venture by being one of two stops on route and providing much needed sustenance.

Harriet and Paul, who both work at Marlborough College, have been overwhelmed by the support which they have been shown by the Marlborough Community over the last few months and hope that by organising an event of this nature that it will be a very positive way to remember the life of their wonderful son.

The couple have already raised around £11,000, and are aiming to reach a target of £30,000. The two charities being supported by the ride are The John Radcliffe Children’s Hospital where Bobby was treated and The Brain Tumour Charity. Harriet says “We wanted some of the money raised to go towards research because not a lot of money is spent on it even though brain tumours are the biggest cancer killer of children and adults under 40.”

Prospective Paralympic Athlete seeks funding Shane Hartop’s dream is to represent Team GB at the Rio Paralympics in 2016.

Shane, plays Boccia, (a target sport for the disabled similar to bowls or petanque), he already plays at national level and is hoping to raise money for equipment that will help him achieve his ambition.

So far, Shane, who has Spinal Muscular Atrophy, has raised £1550 of the £4000 he needs to fund a new ramp which helps in targeting the ball towards the jack.

Neighbourhood Plan

Residents who came along to the first Neighbourhood Planning meeting on 24 March at the Town Hall learned a lot more about how they could influence future land use and development in Marlborough.

Stonebridge Meadow

Councillors Mervyn Hall and Justin Cook set out the processes towards producing a plan and Wiltshire Council officers were on hand to explain things too. The Town Council has set aside money towards it and will also be applying for external funding. The next meeting will take place this month.

Ground Works at the Common A project to level ground adjacent to Marlborough Rugby Club has taken place over the last few weeks. This will enable a better training area for our young rugby and football players and better recreational space for all to enjoy. A Trim Trail for younger children will also be installed later in the year.

The undulations have been evened out and the next phase will involve cultivation and seeding – a time to allow for the grass seed to germinate. We may need to rope off the area for a

Lots going on at Stonebridge as the Town Council continues to work with ARK on improvements at the meadow. ARK has obtained funding to install a reed bed and pond at the site. As expected, the early stages of the project were muddy and messy but the wetland is really taking shape and will soon be transformed thanks to volunteers planting hundreds of plants around the edges. Once ready, the surrounding ground will be seeded with a mix of flowers and grass and later on, a boardwalk will link the two sides of the reed bed and will be well worth a visit.

Marlborough in Bloom The MiB committee is planning for the South West in Bloom judges visit in July with Chair Anne Crawley looking forward to working with our community and businesses. The judging route has been agreed and it’s all geared to showing

Marlborough at its best. This year Marlborough groups will also be taking part in It’s Your Neighbourhood 2015. Look out for details of how you can be involved on the MiB Facebook page.

Prospect Hospice

New community fundraiser for Marlborough area Local charity Prospect Hospice, which recently ran a very successful community appeal to raise funds to open a new Outpatient Centre at Savernake Hospital, have appointed Mike Kennedy as a new community fundraiser for the Marlborough area.

Mike has been working for the local hospice’s fundraising team for the past year while a team member has been on maternity leave, and is delighted to be joining the team permanently “I was so pleased to be able to stay as part of the fundraising team here, especially because it is such an incredibly important time for our activity in Marlborough,” he says. “With the success of the appeal, it is clear that the people of the town, and the nearby villages, really appreciate the work of their local hospice.”

In his new role, Mike’s priority is to further strengthen relationships with all parts of the community.

“During the appeal we had a fantastic opportunity to connect with so many of the people in the area, and it will be my job to ensure that the

people who live here keep supporting Prospect Hospice, helping us to raise at least £400,000, which it costs to provide our care and support in Marlborough and the Kennet Valley.”

Open your garden for Prospect The hospice is also asking people to open their gardens during the summer as part

of its annual Open Gardens event. “Gardens don’t have to be extensive, but they should have features that would be of interest to visitors,” says community fundraiser Amy Francombe.

“I would love to hear from anyone who has an unusual garden, or a garden which has local historical significance, but if you have any garden that people would want to see, then please get in touch.”

You can even limit opening your garden to just your family and friends, according to Amy: “No matter how big or small your garden is you can still raise funds by opening your garden,” she says. “You could host afternoon tea, a live music event or even put on a mini-fete with stalls and games, even turn your annual family barbecue into a fundraiser by asking people to pay for a plate.

There are lots of ways to turn your garden into the perfect setting for an enjoyable fundraising event.”

Miraculous Mind Muscle Yes, we know our brains are not really muscles, but think of all the hard work they do from the day we are born.

About a year ago, two of our teachers went on a course to hear the latest ideas about how children could learn better. These ideas inspired them and out of this the Miraculous Mind Muscle Project was born.

The key idea was that we all have the ability to learn and understand new things and new skills, but our minds need help to achieve this. After a lot of discussion we voted for 6 characteristics which we thought would help us learn the best: Determination, Responsibility, Resourcefulness, Teamwork, Reflection and Challenge.

We would like to tell you how they work for us and although we started talking about them separately, the more we talked, the more we could see that they all worked together.

Many of us found Determination the most useful for it stopped us giving up if we had got stuck. We began to see that the more Determined we were to keep on trying the more likely we were to find the answer, work out the problem or finish the task.

We must be Determined to

be Responsible for our own independent learning...

Of course there are times when, however hard we try, we find we are stuck. Then we need to take Responsibility for finding ways to move on. Where could we go for help? What could we do next?

Resourcefulness is what we need. In our classrooms there are many resources that can help us solve problems in Maths: bead strings, number lines, number squares and Numericon. In other subjects there is information which could help us in books or on the walls. If we are Determined to take Responsibility for our own learning we can often find useful Resources.

What if we still can’t move on? Then the most useful help is Teamwork. Through discussions with our learning partner or a group, we can often find ways to work through problems. If we are stuck, prompts might help.

An idea from one person can often set off new ideas from others. We need someone to talk things through with, so that we can find answers together. There is no point just sitting in silence when teamwork can help us move our understanding forward. After all other people’s brains are a very good Resource, for us to use, readily available in the classroom.

It is also very important for us to Reflect on our own work, to see where we have succeeded and what we can learn from our mistakes.

Our teachers spend time commenting on our work for a good reason: so that we can do even better next time. These are called “now comments” and can be a useful Resource. .

Challenge, is our final idea to exercise our mind muscle and helps put all the other ideas together, Challenging yourself helps you move forward. If you are whizzing through a piece of work on the “mild” list, then you need to look at the “spicy” and “hot” challenges which teachers set for us. This way we don’t sit around wasting time, but can move ourselves on to the next level.

And what do we need to do that? Yes, there we are back to our list: Determination, Responsibility, Resourcefulness, Teamwork, Reflection and Challenge. That is what we think we need to make our brains work at their very best.

What is green burial?

Since there are now over 300 green burial grounds in the country there is no simple answer to that question. The first one ever created was in Carlisle in 1983 and was part of a council cemetery.

In response to a lot of requests from families for something wilder with trees and a less formal atmosphere, Ken West persuaded his employers to let him experiment with something a bit different in a small unused section of the cemetery. It was so popular he was given a larger area to work with and it inspired others all around the country to take up the idea. Ken West has since written the bible on the subject called Green Burial. I have always enjoyed the fact that his wife was a midwife! Some green burial grounds look like formal parkland, with a lot of facilities on site including an undertakers, indoor facilities

for a service and gathering afterwards, catering etc; others are much simpler and a few simply look like a field which sheep graze over.

What is the attraction? Some people feel most at home in nature, that is what inspires and moves them and so they are delighted to feel that they are contributing in a small way through where they choose to be buried in creating in effect a small nature reserve whose plants and animals benefit from their burial. They also like the idea that their family can enjoy coming to visit them, observing the birds, seeing the trees growing over the years, having a picnic and yet not feel the burden of maintaining a grave. Some have environmental concerns and feel this choice is better for the environment in terms of use of stone, weed control and path maintenance.

Others who are not religious feel more comfortable with a burial ground that is not associated with any particular faith tradition. Having said that a lot of people of faith feel drawn to the nature aspect of such a burial and choose

it anyway and there is one Christian green burial ground in Cambridgeshire. Green burial grounds are places for the living as well as the dead. The green burial movement encourages families to see that they can have a dignified, personal funeral without having to spend a huge amount of money and that they can be involved with the process every step of the way if they want to be.

Families report to us how much comfort this brings to them in their grieving.

Gardening

May in the Garden May with its longer, warmer days is the time of year when many of us begin to spend more time enjoying are gardens. Most trees and shrubs have revealed their leaves and many perennials will be preparing to burst into flower.

From mid to late May outside containers can be filled with a variety of summer bedding to give instant colour that will last all season long.

Remember to feed and water containers regularly to maximise displays.

Sweet peas can be planted outside where they are to flower and either trained up trellis or netting or you could make a wigwam out of canes. Tender plants like tree ferns, Olive and Bay trees that have been under cover or wrapped in horticultural fleece to protect them over the winter can now be unwrapped or placed in position outside. Remove any dead or diseased parts and top up the pot with fresh compost before watering. Just be wary that late frosts are possible well into May, if you have tender plants outside and a frost is forecast simply cover with horticultural fleece or newspaper to give a bit of protection and they should be fine.

Hedges should be given a light trim to tidy their appearance and early flowing shrubs like Pyracantha and Kerria can be pruned. Prune back flowering stems on Hellebores and give spring flowering bulbs a sprinkling of fertilizer to help them build up reserves for next spring. Continue to stake tall perennials and tie in climbing plants as they grow. Thin out earlier sowings of hardy annuals to leave a seedling about every 15cm. Deal with weeds and pests regularly to keep them under control and give water features a spring clean removing any duck or pond weed.

Lawns will need more regular mowing, once a week should be fine. Any stubborn lawn weeds can be either spot treated with weed killer or dug out making sure all roots are removed. Any bare patches of lawn can be re seeded, regular feeding will keep lawns green and healthy all summer long.

At the end of May runner beans and french beans can be sown directly into soil outside in rows with supports made out of netting or canes for them to climb as they grow. Sow sweetcorn in blocks of five about 30cm apart to ensure good pollination.

Plant main crop potatoes and continue to earth up earlier varieties until they are ready to harvest.

Place straw underneath strawberry plants to prevent the fruit from rotting and harvest rhubarb regularly.

Keep bird baths and feeders topped up and take a break to enjoy the early summer sunshine.

New International Family Law The Family department at DGR Law deals with a considerable amount of international work, including such issues as Contact Arrangements for separated parents, applications for Prohibited Steps Orders to prevent one parent from fleeing the UK with the children without the consent of the other parent and Child Abduction.

With the number of people leaving the UK for sunnier climates increasing over the past few years we unfortunate see some of those same people fleeing from abusive partners and returning to the England and Wales. Working and earlier retirement abroad does not suit everyone and the grass is certainly not always greener, it is often quite hard work settling into a new way of life away from family and friends and especially with young children. Sadly, the stresses and strains can result into violence and often drunken violence.

In January the EU introduced The Protected Measures Regulation, giving significant cross-EU enforceability of orders for the victims of domestic violence and others benefiting from protective measures. This allows a man or woman who has been subject to violence outside of England and Wales, who have the benefit of a

protection measure to make an application to have the obligations that were placed on the offending person to be recognised and indeed registered in England and Wales.

A protective measure includes the prevention of domestic violence, harassment, sexual aggression, stalking and intimidation. Whether through injunctions, the prohibition of contact or communication and financial penalties these protective measures can now be put into place equally in England and Wales.

Our Family Team can make the application on behalf of our Clients to take away the strain of dealing with the European Court System which is very different in each country and can be extremely complex. For instance, in the UK Divorce and Children’s matters are dealt with in separate proceedings but in Spain it is one Court and one Order. Also, in Spain the financial aspects of Divorce are rather harsh. All assets and property which are registered in either parties name remains with that person. This often means that women are awarded no financial settlement if a property or bank account is solely in her husband’s name.

Another increasing worry is that of Child Abduction.

The Family Team are often contacted regarding the worries of one parent who believes that the non-UK parent has threatened to remove a child from the UK. The English Family Court allows the Legal Profession to make urgent applications to grant a Prohibitive Steps Order to prevent one parent removing a child. One remedy is to order the parent to submit the child’s passport either to the Court or to the representing Law Firm for safe keeping. Either parent

must request the passport giving reasonable notice and an acceptable reason for wanting it. Only with the agreement of either the Court or the other parent can the passport be released. This gives each parent peace of mind.
