Spring is here! I am writing this on a very wet and windy February day – but I hope by the time you are reading it there will be signs of Spring, with crocuses brightening up the place and daffodils starting to flower. It’s surprising how a bit of colour lifts the mood, I love it. When Spring sunshine hits those nooks and crannies, often our thoughts turn to cleaning and de-cluttering – Sammy from Strictly Organised has some great tips to help you put some order back into your home. With Mother’s Day around the corner (30 March for those who need a reminder), regular columnist Fiona ruminates on what being a mother is all about. Our inspirational interviewee this month is Hayley Lambert, who has been causing a stir with her brand new Zero Waste shop in Hughenden Yard, Marlborough. If passion and enthusiasm are any sort of measure, it’ll be a huge success. Hope you enjoy!

Hayley Lambert Hayley Lambert is the proud owner of Packaging NOT Included, the zero waste shop that opened on 23 February in Hughenden Yard, Marlborough. Hayley lives in the town, with her husband Ed, a musician. Are you from this area? No, I’m from Essex originally. We’ve been in Marlborough about eight years, having moved from London. Tell us about yourself I grew up in a small village in Essex, which I liked, but as I got older found quite limiting, as you had to travel to do anything. I was always musical, and so applied to study music in London after my A levels. Music College was a shock to the system coming from such a provincial background. I felt out of my depth at first, as many of my fellow students came from specialist music schools and I felt I had a lot of catching up to do. Eventually I settled in, and in the end had a great experience – it really helped me build resilience, and a strong work ethic. I feel I really grew up whilst there, and learned a lot about the world and myself. After leaving, I built up work as a musician – hard work, but I quickly had a full timetable of teaching, orchestral gigs and concerts with a saxophone quartet. Subsequently I focused more and more on teaching, as I tired of the travelling and waiting around involved in performing. I have really enjoyed teaching saxophone and trying to inspire the next generation of young musicians. We moved to Marlborough when I got a teaching job at Marlborough College. Ed is a musician and jazz composer/arranger, working freelance. Luckily, nowadays you don’t have to be in London to get work, as more and more musicians are living away from the city – not really surprising as it is so expensive to live there. We’ve been very happy here. It’s quite some career switch from musician to shopkeeper – how did that happen? It was almost unintentional! About 18 months ago I happened to be searching on the internet for “nuts in bulk” (I was baking biscuits which needed ground almonds and walnuts, and could

6

only find them in small, expensive packets in the supermarket). I came across Earth.Food.Love, the first zero waste shop in the UK, which is in Totnes, Devon. I was immediately captivated by what they were doing and impressed with what they had achieved. The idea of selling product to people who brought their own containers really appealed. I spent a while researching it on the internet, but initially dismissed the idea of doing it myself as pie in the sky – I’m a musician not a retailer. However, I found that the idea just wouldn’t go away, and the more I thought about it the keener I became. Earth.Food.Love have had a lot of interest from others who want to do the same thing, and as they have no interest in franchising, they produced a guide for others on what to consider when thinking of opening a similar shop. Having gone through it, I decided that I would see if I could raise the money through the Government Start Up loan scheme. It’s a great scheme to help people get businesses off the ground, and provides help with writing a business plan and so on. It was a real thrill when I heard that the loan was approved. Since then I’ve been working hard to pull everything together, finding premises, suppliers, planning and fitting the shop etc. Now I am just a couple of weeks from opening and very excited!

Essentially it is an organic grocery shop, with no packaging. Everything is sold loose or from dispensers, and people will bring their own reusable containers to buy the goods they want.

People Tell us how the shop works Essentially it is an organic grocery shop, with no packaging. Everything is sold loose or from dispensers, and people will bring their own reusable containers to buy the goods they want. The majority of items will be long shelf-life products – rice, pasta, nuts, seeds, cereals, beans, chocolate, flour, sugar etc. We will also have a selection of fresh fruit and vegetables, and fresh bread every day from Rudies, the new artisan bakers. There will also be a peanut butter maker, and a machine that produces nut milks. In addition, we’ll have a range of natural cleaning products and toiletries, and some containers/reusable packaging (eg beeswax wraps). In all there will be around 150 products. When buying, you first weigh your container, and label it with a barcode. You then fill it with your chosen produce (one type per container), and then take to the till to pay, where the weight of your container is taken off the total weight. How have you chosen the products? It’s not just about lack of packaging, there is also a real focus on local, organic, Fairtrade and ethical products. It’s the only place locally that you will be able to buy unwrapped organic fruit and veg, refill cleaning products, refill shower gel and shampoo. Initially there won’t be any refrigerated or frozen products, although they may come later.

What have you enjoyed, and what have you found difficult about preparing to open? Time management has been something of a challenge, as I have continued my two teaching jobs whilst getting ready to open! There’s so much to do, I have been known to be in the shop until midnight on occasion. On the whole I have loved every minute of it – researching products and suppliers and discovering that there are lots of likeminded people out there, pursuing their passions and challenging what is perceived as normal. It’s been a huge learning curve, but I’ve enjoyed finding solutions to problems that have cropped up as we’ve gone along. I’ve been careful to ensure that you don’t have to compromise on quality to buy ethically – all the cleaning products have been tested for effectiveness and they are great. People keep asking me if I’m nervous, but honestly, I’m just excited – it feels right. It’s wonderful to be doing something I have such a passion for. What do you think your main challenges will be once you are open? I think it will take a while to get the amount of fresh food right, as I am determined that there won’t be any wasted produce. This might mean that we run out of the odd thing before the end of the day, but I’m sure we’ll get the balance right in the end. Hopefully people will be understanding. Other than that, I’m sure that there will be issues we haven’t thought of, but that we will deal with as they arise. Ed has been a fantastic

support through all of this, and together I think we can resolve anything unexpected. What are you looking forward to the most? Meeting all our lovely customers - we’ve had a lot of interest already, and I am excited for all the people that have been so supportive either in person or on social media to come into the shop. I’m also looking forward to seeing how the shop develops over time, as I’m sure there will be lots of tweaks to suit our customers. What do you enjoy doing when not in shop mode? My main interest is going to the gym. I go to The Fitness Space in Marlborough, where everyone is fantastic. When I first went it was because I thought I needed to get fitter, and I wasn’t expecting to enjoy it so much. I love my workouts there, they are a good distraction from work, as you can’t be thinking about dried goods or shopfitting while weight lifting! I enjoy reading, although not much time for that at the moment. The last book I read was the latest Philip Pullman, the first in The Book of Dust series. Ed bought me a “How to be an entrepreneur” type book for Christmas, but I haven’t had time to read it yet! As a musician, I have a very wide ranging taste in music – from classical, to choral and rock and pop. I don’t play so much at the moment, but I’ll always love the saxophone. Packaging NOT Included is in Hughenden Yard, Marlborough – why not pop along with your containers and check out what’s on offer? You’ll find more info at www.packagingnotincluded.co.uk, and you’ll also find them on Facebook and Instagram

Michael Gray Memorial Appeal As many of you no doubt know, Michael Gray, who was crucial to the inception and development of the Merchant’s House and who held the House close to his heart for thirty years, died in November last year. The Merchant’s House Trust is now exploring ways of marking his special place in the project, and as well as writing to all the Friends of the Merchant’s House is appealing more widely to reach those who would be interested in contributing. Clyde Nancarrow, Chairman of Trustees explains, “Michael’s greatest love was English furniture, especially that of the 16th and 17th centuries, and so we would like to buy a significant piece of furniture in his memory. It would be displayed in the House with an acknowledgement of why it was purchased. Michael’s family are generously donating the sums collected at his funeral to the Trust and we are asking people to kindly

8

contribute in his memory. All contributions will be most gratefully received” If you would like to contribute, payment should be made by cheque to The Merchant’s House Trust or by bank transfer to: Barclays Bank PLC, Account Number: 50635065 Sort Code: 20-84-58 Using the reference MG fund.

Do you use Children’s Centre Services? Wiltshire Council is asking for people’s views on proposals to expand what it says is its successful model of providing children’s centre services in local community venues. It says more vulnerable families are being reached as many of the services for under 5’s are now provided at the heart of communities. Currently the services are provided in a mix of venues, including dedicated buildings or community sites such as libraries, church halls and community centres. More people are also accessing information online so future provision will have to meet that need. Now Wiltshire Council is keen to expand its model by finding more community spaces including halls, libraries, campuses and leisure centres. People are being consulted on alternative venues so underused buildings can be closed and more sessions can be held for children and families in well-used community sites. The services for families with under-5s provide a range of support and advice around parenting, home learning environment, domestic abuse support, employment and training opportunities and healthy lifestyles. Children’s centre services would continue to work in collaboration with health visiting and midwifery and other colleagues who support housing and employment. There would also be a greater emphasis on providing help earlier for families before they reach crisis point. If you think there should be services more local to you, or changes to the existing ones, you can have your say at http://consult.wiltshire.gov.uk/ portal/education/childrens_centre_proposals until 20 March 2019.

Royal British Legion

At January’s Full Council meeting, our Mayor, Councillor Lisa Farrell, was delighted to present a cheque for £440 to David Brown, Vice Chairman of the Marlborough Branch of the Royal British Legion. This represented the proceeds of a Town Council commemorative ‘Roll of Honour’ event held on 10 November in the Town Hall, a tribute to all those in Marlborough who played their part in the Great War. This contribution will be towards the Poppy Appeal 2018 for which the local RBL branch raised a record breaking £17,000 – a magnificent effort for this worthy cause.

Green Tokens

At the same meeting, Cllr Farrell was able to thank Waitrose for its continued support under the Community Matters Green Tokens Scheme where shoppers can decide which local cause to donate their tokens to. Ian Burdekin,

Branch Manager, handed over a cheque for £342 raised to help towards the costs of staging the Christmas Lights Switch-on event and Lisa Wakeham, Community Lead for the scheme, then presented a cheque for £250 towards the Mayor’s 7 charities. The Mayor also thanked all of those who donated their tokens.

Tree Planting

On a windy February morning, around 60 volunteers met to plant trees on Marlborough Common to create a Centenary Wood to mark the end of World War 1. Les Trute, General Manager of Marlborough Golf Club, helped spearhead the project discussing it with the Woodland Trust to make sure that the best site was selected. In time, it will form

an avenue beside the fairway at the 15th hole. It’s hoped that an interpretation board will be added later to help explain the importance of the wood to future generations. The trees are all indigenous species including Goat Willow, Silver Birch, Wild Cherry, Field Maple, Rowan, Oak, Whitebeam, Hazel, Dogwood and Holly. So not only year-round interest, but a wildlife friendly habitat too. Thanks go to Club members and local volunteers as well as the Town Council Grounds Team who all helped with planting.

Jubilee Centre At a farewell event at the end of January, the Mayor was able to say a big thank you to Carole Walker who has managed the Jubilee Centre for just under 15 years. The Centre, which is in the High Street, provides a vital service for elderly people in the area offering them a stimulating and safe environment with a host of varied activities. Over the years, Carole and volunteers have transformed the centre into an invaluable facility. We send her all best wishes for the future.

Lifestyle

Mother’s Day Mother’s day will, for me, be a poignant day this year. My Mum and my Mother in Law are both very much alive and kicking and I am so grateful to have them around. We aren’t really a family that makes a big fuss of Mother’s day, but I’ll get them each a card and a little something to show that I care. These will either be popped in the post or handed over when we meet near the time. Nothing fancy on the day itself. Similarly for me, as a mum, the day is usually a couple of cards, jokey from son and pretty from daughter signed by them and the menagerie of pets, of course, then off we go. The rest of the day on a cold rugby pitch in the morning cheering on the Marlborough U15’s and home for chores, enforcement of homework time and build up to a roast dinner - and that’s how I like it. I don’t need to be wined and dined and showered in chocolates or flowers. (Well, flowers are nice occasionally…) Saying that though, appreciating happiness, whilst we have it, is an understated art. I am at an age now where friends and family are losing their mothers and, whilst life has ticked away nicely for them, the loss of their mother, sudden or otherwise is immense. Sadly, a young colleague of mine passed away days before Christmas leaving a small child. My Mum lost her mother at an early age too and I cannot begin to comprehend the impact that losing a mother must have on a child. Fitting in calls to my parents around the general hustle and bustle of life is not my best skill. I generally speak to my parents once a week. Sometimes, if technology permits, we even manage to Face Time. This is always hilarious as I get the view of a thumb, the ceiling or the top of Mum’s head. Then there’s the “I’ll hand you over to Dad now” and we have a few minutes more of ceiling, shots of ears, even the carpet and a quick catch up before Call the Midwife takes priority and off they go. My sister has recently set up a family WhatsApp group which fills the gaps a little and has resulted in some more single sentence chatter and exchanged snow pictures or

14

naughty puppy pictures. Whilst I assume that this is enough, is it? Although my parents are retired, they are busy people and quite often, one or the other isn’t around when I call. This all seems fine and the accepted norm, but how am I going to feel when, in September, my daughter goes off to university some four hours away from home? I have no doubt that there will be the odd text – usually for money, and the odd call, but how would I feel if this was once a week only? I can’t quite comprehend it. Mind you, with teenagers, there are quite often days when you wonder why you’ve bothered speaking at all. Life is different now to when I was at university and had to queue to use a telephone in my student halls. Her phone is very much glued to my daughter’s hand, so that shouldn’t be a problem. Will she call, will she miss me? Who knows? What I do know is that the key is to making each of those moments that you do share the best version of a moment that they can be. We don’t need to be hearts and flowers to our mums and as mums all the time. It’s about what makes you feel loved that counts. Happy Mother’s day Mum x Fiona Kellow Fiona Kellow is a working mum of two. When she isn’t running around after her family she is a Partner at Thrings Solicitors, specialising in family law.

Spring de-cluttering Longer days, warmer weather, daffodils appearing – Spring must be around the corner. I love the word spring. It conveys that feeling of a positive burst of energy - a good word describing how the world wakes up from those sleepy winter months. It is therefore not surprising that people are motivated to have a good spring clean to freshen things up. Clients often say they imagine I live in a minimalist haven of nothingness, which makes me laugh as that isn’t the case. However, what I do believe, and what I tell them, is that the things you have in your home should help not hinder how you live. Like everyone else, Spring is a good reminder for me to go through a declutter process. Over the past few months I have had the perfect opportunity as we have been doing some building works which meant I had to clear some rooms. So here are some of the things I used to help me: • I put a recycle/donation box near the front door, and I added to it as I went along. • I removed everything in my wardrobe that didn’t fit/hadn’t worn for a while. • I invested in some ‘thin’ hangers and created about a third more hanging space. • I thought I had a pretty organised kitchen but those out of date jars and spices still lingered and there were old saucepans buried at the back of the cupboards. Out they all went. • I cleared out all the cosmetics and creams that I hadn’t used for a while – they can be one

of the biggest germ traps. • I took some old medications to the pharmacy so they could be disposed of properly. • I thinned out the bookshelf of paperbacks and managed to create more space in the landing by getting rid of a fiddly bookcase. • I discovered the Tardis that was the garage. Boxes we had stored waiting to unpack once the work had been done were more than I remembered! However, having lived without the contents for over a year it became easier to let go of a lot of things and not bring clutter into the newly decorated space So how am I feeling now? A lot calmer. Everything has its place and managing the house has become much easier. There were times when it was all a bit daunting, so I set up a simple routine where I did an hour of focussed clearing each night and after a week it was done. I now have a bit of a ‘spring’ in my step! Sammy Ryan, Strictly Organised

Vet’s Column

Parasites: the unwelcome guests As winter draws to an end and the weather slowly starts to get warmer, parasites become more active and eager to begin bothering our pets! So we feel it is the perfect time to remind all pet owners to make sure their pets are protected against these unwelcome guests. There are two major groups of parasites that can affect our pets: ectoparasites, which are external parasites, and endoparasites or internal parasites (most of them are worms!). The first like to settle in our pets’ skin and hair and the later like to make themselves comfortable inside our pets’ bodies, settling in different places according to their type. Most worms live in the intestines, positioning themselves in the perfect spot to steal our pets’ nutrients, causing gastrointestinal upset, and, in most severe cases, anaemia and bowel obstructions. However, others are bolder in their invasive ways and establish themselves in the heart (heartworm) or lungs (lungworm) causing bigger and potentially life-threatening problems. As for ectoparasites, these are the ones that you’ll be able to notice more quickly as they keep themselves busy on the outside! We’re talking about fleas, ticks, mites, but also flies and mosquitoes. These can cause allergies and skin conditions, either by irritation or because our pets scratch themselves so much, and can be the carriers of worms and other dangerous infectious agents. It is very easy for our pets to get parasites as these tiny creatures are everywhere, and can effortlessly make their way through our homes uninvited, especially fleas. Being carried by our pets, fleas will march through our doors and before we know it, they’ll start laying their eggs all around their environment. This is why it’s so important to cover all angles when treating for fleas,

28

treating the affected pets, other household pets (including indoor pets), and the home environment. The good news is you can (and should) keep your pets protected from these little creatures at all times! There are a number of products available on the market to protect your pets, but different products have different effects on the parasites depending on their composition. Some have a repellent effect that keeps external parasites at bay, others only kill adult parasites, and others won’t kill the parasites but will keep them from growing into their adult forms, preventing their reproduction. Some Products have long-term effects, but others don’t. There are also some products available for dogs that are not safe to use in cats (and other pets) and can even be fatal if inadvertently applied to our friendly felines. For these reasons, you should always seek veterinary advice to keep your pets protected. Your vet will be able to recommend the best product (or combination of products) to protect your pets and formulate a prevention plan specifically tailored to their needs that takes into consideration their routines, their environment and their interaction with other pets. Remember: prevention is the best medicine! Drove Vets
