Love Local When I interview people and ask them what they like about living in the Marlborough Area, one of the most common replies is the High Street. Despite an influx of national High St brands in recent years, Marlborough still has a great selection of independent shops owned and run by local people. In addition, there are a good selection of independent coffee shops, cafés and restaurants. (Too many, I hear some people say…) At a time when retail is suffering at the hands of austerity and the onslaught of online shopping, it’s good to remember that all these independent businesses support the local economy, and it’s great if we can support them. I was reminded of this when talking to this month’s interviewee Jane Goldstein. Jane herself runs local independent printers, Print Image. Her enthusiasm and passion for supporting local businesses is infectious, and her love of helping people find the right solution for their print needs is obvious. If you need any print, it’s worth giving her a call and supporting another local business. Lots more to read, hope you enjoy!

Jane Goldstein Jane Goldstein runs Print Image, a local printing company based in Wagon Yard in Marlborough. She is married to Neil, and has three grown up children, Ruby, 22, Rhianna, 21, and Piers, 20. The family live in Wexcombe, near Wilton Windmill. Tell us about yourself I grew up in Reading, so not too far away. I went to Middlesex Uni to do a Business Studies degree. After I graduated, I became one of Microsoft’s first employees in the UK. I worked in Marketing, and as the UK business was small at that time, I got the opportunity to meet Bill Gates once or twice. After a while I moved to London and worked for a business consultancy – I was involved in the transformation programme at BT, which was a long project involving the company reorganising itself to be more focused on customers rather than subscribers. It involved many aspects including corporate ID, internal communications and even the redesign of the telephone bill. Having cut my teeth there, afterwards it seemed if a project had “British” in it I was involved ie British Rail, British Gas etc When I had my children, Neil and I set up an Executive Search company specialising in the reinsurance industry (companies like Lloyd’s of London that are basically responsible for insuring insurance companies). Our firm started just after our eldest Ruby was born, which was somewhat stressful – however we managed to build the business between us with the help of a nursery and a positive attitude (some might call it general madness!) How did you come to run a printing company? Many things contributed to the decision to take over at Print Image. I felt I had done as much as I could at my job in London, and felt I wanted a new challenge. I’m a creative person, and also enjoy working with and for the community. I had been thinking of doing something different for a while, and when the opportunity arose, I took it. I knew the previous owners, as they lived near me. After John sadly died, his wife Cathy mentioned that she was selling the business to me when I saw her at a social event. I was interested straight away, as the business fit with a lot of the things I was looking for – it was local, creative, provided potential for entrepreneurship, and would allow me to use my marketing experience, as well as give the chance to learn something new.

6

How long have you had the business now, and how is it going? Since April 2018, so coming up to a year. It’s going really well, we’ve worked with lots of new clients, and they have given us great feedback, and often recommended us to others, so the business is growing organically. Did you have much experience of printing? I had experience of working with print from the client side of things. There has been a learning curve, but it has been a real pleasure working with experts in the field to provide a brilliant service. My key strength is the understanding of the relationship between design and print, and the best way of getting value from designing for print. I have a great eye for detail too, which is important as print is very technical and you have to get it right. So what would you say is different about what you offer? We offer a bespoke service, and a level of marketing consultancy that you wouldn’t get at every printer. My objective is to make clients happy – the way we do this is by listening to what they are trying to achieve and then working with them to get the best solution, combining design and print to impress and make an impact. Also, we offer a huge range of printed products, from digital print on paper and vinyls through to heat transfer, embroidery and silkscreen printing

I love it when people go away happy with what we have produced for them, especially when we have gone beyond what they might have initially expected.

People on clothing and textiles. Not to mention signs and banners, wirebound books and all manner of promotional products. We have a Print Image team, which involves carefully selected partners that help us to offer almost anything you could want printed! Most businesses are not experts in design and print (why should they be?), and often don’t know exactly what they want when they walk through the door. For instance, we had a client that came in asking for an A4 brochure – after listening to what it was for, we suggested that actually the smaller A5 format would work better and be more cost effective. Another wanted a flyer to promote an event at a comedy festival; after hearing what the objective was, we suggested a business card format would be better as they are easy for people to keep, and also a bit different to what everyone else was doing. We had great feedback from both clients. Finally, we will work with customers to ensure they get the best value and most cost-effective solution to their needs. Do you just work with businesses? No, we do a lot of personal printing too – correspondence cards, letterheads, wedding and other invitations, Orders of Service, greeting cards, calendars etc. At Christmas it was a pleasure to print so many personal Christmas Cards featuring people’s own pictures. What do you enjoy most about your job? I love the diversity of people and businesses that we work for – I meet such a wide variety of people it’s amazing.

I also love solving problems, and coming up with the best ideas to meet people’s objectives. I love it when people go away happy with what we have produced for them, especially when we have gone beyond what they might have initially expected. I’ve also like getting involved in the community – this year we created some tea towels, followed by Christmas cards, with some lovely illustrations of local Marlborough landmarks. One of our graphic designers, Imi, produced the illustrations and we have plans to develop this “With love from Marlborough” range. The products went down really well at the Christmas market. I also got involved with the creation of a calendar to raise money for Brighter Futures – we used images from local photographers, with each month sponsored by local businesses. In a Parish of 300 houses we sold 250 copies (the whole print run), raising a great sum for the charity. This is the sort of thing I really enjoy being involved with. Anything you don’t like? Not really, I think of what I do as being in the happiness business as I bring people’s ideas into reality. I’m thoroughly enjoying the challenge. What do you get up to in your spare time? I like to keep fit and I’m in a paddleboarding club, which I love. I’m also a keen runner – I love to go off on my own with my headphones. It’s great thinking time – I always have loads of ideas while running along! Cooking is something I love – I have over 1000 cook books which are gathering a bit of dust at the moment as I

don’t get as much time to do anything particularly creative these days. I love reading, particularly crime fiction (back to problem solving again!) and when I get the chance enjoy crafty pastimes (although again, finding the time is hard). I love music too, and have a particular liking for the music of Philip Glass, who I believe is the greatest living composer. His output is quite prolific, and often uses other media such as film to enhance the music. He is accessible too, and I have met him several times. What do you like about living in the Marlborough area? I love living in the middle of nowhere - our village is so small it doesn’t even have road names, or mains water (we have spring water). When we moved in about 20 years ago, we still had party telephone lines! The countryside is all around us, we are very lucky to have forest and river in such close proximity, it gives such a sense of wellbeing and has been a great place to bring up kids. I also think there’s a great sense of community – there’s a fabulous mix of people who are generally welcoming and friendly. We’re also very fortunate to have Marlborough High St, which has a fantastic choice of independent shops that I support as much as I can. I think it’s incredibly important to support local businesses – we’re in Wagon Yard, which has a great group of small businesses, a nice little community too. I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else. Local News

Dementia Roadmap for Wiltshire Alzheimer’s Support has launched a new website to guide people through the process of being diagnosed with dementia in Wiltshire.

The Dementia Roadmap for Wiltshire is a simple online guide to what to expect during the process of being diagnosed with any type of dementia. It includes a symptoms guide, information about other conditions that can be confused with dementia, and explains the roles of health care and non-medical staff in supporting families at every step of the way. It is designed to be used by healthcare professionals as well as by families and individuals, who can dip in and out of the roadmap at different stages in their personal journey. The roadmap leads to a related site, the Support Village, where the charity has pulled together links to a wealth of relevant local information about available support. Babs Harris, Alzheimer’s Support CEO, said: “We have been working on this for nearly two years and have had tremendous support and encouragement from so many people who know how valuable this information will be. “People often tell us that what they need is practical, locally available support. There is a wealth of information already available but it can be hard to find, so the Support Village, which is still being developed, will bring this together in one place.” “We already have nine Dementia Advisers in Wiltshire. We think of the roadmap and support village together as a 10th ‘virtual’ dementia adviser, accessible 24 hours a day, and there to help people find the information they need to live as well as they can with dementia.”

10

The Roadmap and Support Village were created with financial support from Wiltshire Clinical Commissioning Group, and with input from people affected by dementia and local organisations.

Rolo’s fame gets wider

Marlborough resident canine author/time travelling dog Rolo is the new face of IAMS vitality dog food. Owner Debi Evans answered a Facebook shout out to an animal modelling agency who wanted a charismatic Jack Russell to feature on the new packaging. Rolo was chosen by photograph and 3 photo shoots/film sessions followed. For the past few months Rolo has been seen on the IAMS packaging in supermarkets nationwide as well as on the IAMS TV advert and even on the side of buses! He has come a long way since his days at Dogs Trust and is busy working on his fifth book in The Secret Adventures of Rolo series.

Volunteers needed! If one of your New Year resolutions is to do some volunteer work, but you haven’t decided what, then here are a couple of ideas for you.

The Friends of Savernake Hospital are always looking for volunteers, either to help in the shop at the hospital, or if more your scene to join the Friends’ Committee. (This involves 4-5 daytime meetings during the year.) If interested, email info@friendsofsavernake.org for more details. Home-Start Kennet helps struggling families. Its volunteers give 1-1 support in the home – increasing confidence, resilience and wellbeing. Last year they helped 107 families and 216 children – help them to help more! Volunteers should be caring, positive, great listeners – with parenting skills or relevant life experience. The next Volunteer Training Course starts February 2019. Interested? Call 01672 569457 or email hskadmin@homestartkennet.co.uk.

Celebrating our Young People

on 15 December. The Mayor was asked to help judge this and was very impressed by the talented competitors and their proud teacher, Cheryl Heuston who puts so much into her work with this group. Another hugely successful event which the Mayor thoroughly enjoyed.

Festive Spirit - The pupils of Marlborough St Mary’s Primary School helped us get into the festive spirit by designing our Mayor’s Christmas Card. There were lots of fabulous designs and it can’t have been easy to decide which ones to choose. In the end, the winners were Bethia Prest and William Harnett, a couple of amazing budding artists. These cards were sent by Mayor Lisa Farrell to people all over the county so spreading Marlborough’s talent far and wide. Very well done everyone.

Lifestyle

“Bags” of good intentions Life in my house has its own hectic pattern with the essentials getting done in between sports, taxi-ing teenagers, dog walks and, of course, work. I have the best of intentions, of course, to be the best human being for myself, my family, my locality and even for the planet. Best laid plans however don’t always work. Ever since the charge came in for carrier bags in supermarkets, I have been travelling around with a boot full of bags which, every time I shop, without fail, I forget. I then buy more bags (often the stronger ones) and promise to do the right thing on the next shopping trip. I will soon need to extend my garage to hold all of the bags for life. In fact, I think I have all of the “lives” covered off for Marlborough in my garage. I know what you are thinking, ”Put the bags in the car, you won’t forget them then”. Well, I do. They end up being thrown around by the kids and put back in the boot to keep them tidy. Maybe car designers could build in a feature light/warning for when you park to remind you to take carrier bags? Or, is it just me? I have even stuck post it notes to my steering wheel as a reminder but failed even then. They say it takes at least twenty times of doing something to make it a habit. I’d be lucky to remember to do this twice, let alone twenty times. I am trying to be good, recycling everything that seems remotely plastic, tin, card or glass and reading up on what more I can do to keep plastics from the seas that surround our shores. What do I do then when, to my horror, I discover a packet of plastic drinking straws in my cake decorating cupboard? They sat there staring at me, daring me to admit that I had something so dreadful in my house. I even looked behind me to make sure no-one was looking when I found them – the shame of it. They must have been in there for years, perhaps a throwback from a children’s

16

party. Do I use them or recycle them or does recycling mean that they will end up with a sea horse being photographed holding one, like the infamous cotton bud picture. For now, they remain in the cupboard but I feel their presence and the shame. Should I put them in the boot with the carrier bags perhaps? Somehow or other, I will crack the bag dilemma, and this year is the year. Learning that one trillion bags are produced per year worldwide is shameful as is the fact that each bag takes 1,000 years to fully degrade and, even as it does, it poses a significant threat to nature, has to be the push to do my bit to help. I have a lot of bags for life to work through but will do my best to use them wisely. So, if you happen to bump into me in Waitrose or Tescos, give me a gentle nudge to get the bags out of the boot will you? Fiona Kellow Fiona Kellow is a working mum of two. Money

Why Cashflow P lanning Can Bring the Future Closer You might’ve come across the term cashflow planning or forecasting. But just what exactly is it? At Chilvester we’ve got just the advice you need, whether that’s about savings, insurance, a mortgage, pension and retirement planning or much more. We help people build solid financial foundations and plan for a prosperous financial future by helping them to identify and then quantify their future goals and objectives. We do this by creating a financial plan which provides the roadmap to achieving those targets. Having a financial plan can help to put some meaning to the reasons you save into things like pensions and ISAs and enables you to make informed decisions about your future. Cashflow planning is an intrinsic part of the financial plan. In simple terms, cashflow planning helps to plot out possible future scenarios. At Chilvester we consider it to be a critical part of both building and maintaining your financial plan. Under the bonnet, a cashflow plan or forecast will show the value of all of your savings, pensions, investments etc. now and project them into the future. It’ll account for your expected income and also your likely expenditure. If you’ve ever wondered when you could afford to retire, whether you’re saving enough to send children to university, or that your money will last as long as you do – a cashflow plan can help to answer those questions by painting a picture of your possible future. Sometimes that target you thought was just too far out of reach might actually be closer than you think. It can show you if a future goal or ambition is financially achievable.

18

We can also use cashflow planning when determining the best way of paying down mortgages, loans and credit cards and helping someone to see how quickly they could become debt free. A cashflow plan can also highlight any potential risks to your financial situation. For example, how would a family cope with a sudden loss of income, or what an inheritance tax liability might be in the future. When you’re thinking of retiring, a cashflow plan can help to show whether your money is likely to last your lifetime. Generally, you only retire once, so getting it right is quite important. This is the one time in life where we think having a thorough financial review is really beneficial. By taking the time to consider all of the available options and plot them out with the help of a cashflow plan, it can help provide a lot of reassurance that the decisions you make are the right ones. One of the really great things about cashflow planning is that it can be regularly updated to see how you’re progressing towards your goals. Sometimes things might need tweaking or changing to make sure things stay on track, but other times it can be really encouraging to see the plan progressing well and those goals getting closer.

Vet’s Column

Healthy Hearts! If we are perfectly tuned machines, then our heart is the engine, and the same is true for our pets! The heart is the organ in charge of keeping nutrients and oxygen moving to every little corner of our bodies, making sure all of our systems continue to work perfectly. Animal’s hearts are made up of special muscular cells and these form 4 separate chambers that hold in blood and then when the heart contracts, the blood is pumped out to the rest of the body. We tend to associate heart issues with our golden oldies, and while age might increase the risk of some conditions, heart disease has a lot of causes! Some of these are more frequent in young animals, and others might even appear at any age. Another critical factor in heart disease is that it’s quite common in both cats and dogs, though they have different causes depending on the species and ages involved. How do I know if my pet has heart problems? There are several signs you can be on the lookout for that might tell you when it’s time to take your pet to the vet. Slowing down during exercise, fainting, coughing, distended abdomen, difficulty breathing, and pale gums are all signs that can indicate heart conditions. Cats, in particular, can suffer from hind leg paralysis due to blood clots that form as a result of poor circulation associated with heart disease. However, many other issues that are not heart-related can have these same signs. To make sure we’re on the right track, your vet will do a thorough physical exam and possibly examine the heart directly with tests like chest x-rays, ultrasounds, electrocardiography or blood tests. The most common heart condition of dogs is disease of the heart valves while in cats it’s a thickening of the heart chambers – a condition

32

called hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. The circulatory system has a fantastic capacity to adapt, but as damages progress, it becomes too much for the heart to compensate. Even though early heart disease usually has no symptoms, once heart failure sets in, most of the time it is irreversible. This is why it’s important to do regular heart health check-ups and catch any treatable conditions in time. My pet has a heart condition, what can I do? Cardiac insufficiency is also known as congestive heart failure, and we agree that this sounds quite scary! Even though this condition is most likely irreversible, there are plenty of treatment options to improve heart function and help with other signs like distended abdomen, fluid in lungs and intolerance to exercise. It’s essential that you: • Follow your vet’s recommendations and for therapy; • Talk to your vet or nurse about all the questions and doubts you might have; • Bring your pet in periodically for check-ups and to make sure the treatment is still working; • Keep in mind that most heart conditions will need lifelong treatment and just because your pet is feeling better you shouldn’t discontinue their medication. Don’t forget, your vets are there for you and your pet If you notice something might be wrong (for example: bouts of coughing, collapse, heavy breathing, distended abdomen) or you’re not sure of how to proceed, contact your practice immediately.
