ÆRØ GUIDE 2021 > 7
MARSTAL Marstal is the biggest town on Ærø, and was once the second-largest shipping hub in Denmark – exceeded only by the Danish capital. Take a stroll through the town or along the waterfront and you will notice how the impressive maritime history is still much in evidence everywhere you look.
MARITIME TRADITIONS ALIVE AND WELL Shipping remains the lifeblood of the town. Marstal is home to the School of Navigation, which has been training navigators for the Danish merchant navy for more than 150 years and is still highly relevant today. As recently as in 2020, the school received a grant of DKK 3.5 million from the A.P. Møller Foundation to invest in training vessels and facilities. If you would like to dive down into the maritime history of Marstal, we warmly recommend a visit to Marstal Maritime Museum – although “museum” is perhaps
8 > ÆRØ GUIDE 2021
an understatement. The place is actually a treasure trove of all things maritime, and the people in the photos are more than anonymous figures. “The lady there on the deck
in the big hat was my great-grandmother,” relates the tour guide. And that pretty much sets the scene (find out more about Marstal Maritime Museum on page 31).
CARSTEN JENSEN’S "WE, THE DROWNED" THE "ÆRØXPRESSEN"
A MAGNET FOR INVENTIVE MINDS It is not unusual to find evidence of innovation and creative thinking in and around Marstal. For example, there is the old Engine Factory, which was given a new lease of life after it was bought at auction in 2017 and converted into a maritime culture centre. One good example of the innovation capacity of the old factory is its new FabLab, which was launched in 2019 and already serves as a magnet for inventive minds. A FabLab is a kind of inventors’ workshop where inquisitiveness is the key and the only limit is the imagination.
MARSTAL DILIGENCE BRINGS NEW LIFE TO THE HARBOUR The harbour has become a centre for life and
celebration now that the ÆrøXpressen ferry link between Marstal and Rudkøbing has been re-established. The route was closed down in 2013, but reopened in December 2019. ÆrøXpressen is financed by private shareholders, serving as a fine example of authentic Marstal diligence. Another example is the old pier which runs all the way along the harbour, continuing out to Frederiksøen. The pier was hand-built by the local seafarers following years and years of inactivity by the authorities. With the return of ÆrøXpressen, a host of shops and cafés have opened their doors once more in Marstal, and you can experi-
The novel "We, the drowned" (Vi, de druknede) was written by the Danish author Carsten Jensen, born and raised in Marstal. The book tells the story of four generations of seamen, all driven by a longing to explore far horizons, and whose lives of peril have far-reaching consequences for themselves and their families. The book has received international acclaim, and is the reason why people all over the world have a good understanding of what it means to be a “son of Marstal”. ence an almost metropolitan atmosphere as you stroll around the harbour with a to-go drink in your hand and attractive sailing ships in the background.
AROUND MARSTAL Marstal is a wonderful place to go shopping and presents a tempting selection of cafés and restaurants. There is also a campsite and youth hostel, as well as hotels and private homes that offer overnight accommodation at reasonable prices. When you visit Marstal, make sure to take a walk out to Eriks Hale – or “Halen”, as the locals call it. This tongue of land has one of the finest beaches on Ærø, as well as 19 of the iconic beach houses that many people consider one of the most authentically “Ærø-ish” features of this wonderful island.
PSST! DID YOU KNOW ... ... that there is something unusual about the urban planning of Marstal? The town is actually laid out with the waterfront as its centre – and planned without a ruler. That is why all the roads and paths (known as “strings”) run from the main street down to the harbour and the sea.

ÆRØSKØBING
A FINELY PRESERVED TOWN
AN ENTERPRISING TOWN
Ærøskøbing is the best preserved eigh teenth century town in Denmark, although some parts are actually more than 750 years old. Thanks to the total preservation orders that apply to many of the houses in the town and an ambitious conservation plan, Ærøskøbing stands almost as a dictionary definition of idyll, with its cobbled streets, climbing roses and small, well preserved houses. Travel guides from both Denmark and abroad often refer to it as “the Fairytale Town”. Take a stroll through its streets and admire the colours and details of all the houses – for instance, one of the doors was last painted in the 1700s, when it was treated with a mixture of ox blood and oil! If you pass through the marina, you will come to Vesterstrand beach, famous for its colourful beach houses. The campsite, the youth hostel, guest houses and hotels provide plenty of places to spend the night for the numerous visitors to the town, which also has a fine selection of cafés and restaurants.
In recent years, Ærøskøbing has experienced something of a renaissance and a veritable flood of entrepreneurship. As one example, Torvet (the town square) which was nothing more than a car park and a slowly wilting general store just ten years ago, has now become a thriving meeting point for the town, with cafés offering outdoor service, and joyful brides skipping up to have their photo taken in front of the old linden tree. The local independent school receives a steady flow of applications, and the houses put up for sale are seldom on the estate agents’ books for long– an authentic sunshine story on the island.
1 0 > ÆRØ GUIDE 2021
In the summer, you can follow the watchman on his rounds and feel the breath of history caress your skin. The guided tour of the town, through the streets lined with old houses, gives an excellent impression of life here in ages past, while the twilight really sets the scene in the Fairytale Town.
A PRIZEWINNING TOWN In 2002, Ærøskøbing was awarded the prestigious Europa Nostra prize for its work to preserve European cultural heritage. In 2013, the town was also presented with Det Brune Johanneskors, which is a Danish national award introduced by the Danish Nature Agency, the Danish Agency for Cultural Heritage and the VisitDenmark organisation. This prestigious award is given to sights and attractions of national significance, and of the 200 or so Danish sights included, two are on Ærø: Ærøskøbing itself and Voderup Klint.
TAKE YOUR TIME...
PSST! DID YOU KNOW ... ... that at Bøssehage, on the outskirts of Ærø, you will find a charming little jetty and beach, known locally as “Skidten”? The unflattering name (it means “the crap” in English) comes from the fact that this was once the town dump, and the verdant flora on the site today is almost certainly attributable to the fertiliser from the numerous toilet pails that have been emptied here in ages past. Sit down on the bench out by the water and enjoy the view to Lilleø and Ommelshoved.
ÆRØ GUIDE 2021 > 1 1
SØBY HARBOUR LIFE
The harbour in Søby is the setting for a great many events and activities. It is home to many of the commercial fishermen on the island, and the site of Ærø’s largest work place – Søby Værft (shipyard) – that launched Ellen, the world's furthest ranging electric ferry on one charge, in 2019. Local enthusiasts have organised a walking tour of the area in the footsteps of the original founder of the Søby Værft: Arthur. The walk is both entertaining and educational. You can find out more about Arthur on the following page. In the summer, guests and locals alike stream to the harbour to enjoy the annual harbour festival. Attractions here include crab races for the youngest visitors, and drinks and snacks under coloured lamps for the grown-ups in the evening. From June until September, the entire harbour area is decorated with fascinating contemporary art when Ærø College of Art stages its outdoor summer exhibition. For details of the exhibition, see visitaeroe.com/events. Søby Marina has a wonderful sandy beach, with a fine jetty and crystal clear water. There is both a playground and a mini-golf
course nearby, and the area is perfect for families with children. You can also prepare your evening meal in the charming barbecue area, with its picnic tables and cookhouse.
THE TOWN AT THE TOP At the top of the town stands a beautiful church from 1745. This is also the site of Søby Mølle (mill) which is considered to be the town hallmark. Further down towards the harbour, you will find Finns Bageri & Café, a bakery that takes pride in making bread and cakes from scratch using top quality ingredients. The Dagli’ Brugsen supermarket stays open late, selling locally produced goods, gluten- and lactose-free products and a range of special offers. Other attractions in Søby include cycle hire, a variety of inns and bars, holiday apartments, B&Bs and a local furniture shop. Are you looking for a truly exceptional camping experience in the heart of the countryside? Then visit Søby Camping, known as the “The Edible Campsite” because delicious herbs, lettuce, peas and other vegetables are grown on site – for guests to enjoy free of charge!
PSST! DID YOU KNOW ... … that the village of Haven (the Garden), which is located 3 km outside Søby, was established when farm owners from Søby were ordered to leave the town by the king, because their farms were located too close to each other. The “lucky ones” were selected by the drawing of lots, and their respective farms were then dismantled stone by stone and rebuilt outside Søby where their animals had previously grazed under a parlour and yard system. 1 2 > ÆRØ GUIDE 2021
SØBY’S SURROUNDINGS The area around Søby is scattered with charming villages and delightful farm shops. For example, the shop called Herremark – located in an area of the same name – sells wonderful curios and modern ornaments for the home. Head off on an excursion – in a car, by bike or on foot – to Vester Mølle (mill), which stands in an idyllic setting several kilometres from Søby. A few hundred metres further on, you will find Søbygaard Manor, which you can learn more about on page 29. On the other side of the road is the beautiful Vitsø lake. Take a walk around the lake and enjoy the magnificent birdlife, which features a variety of species you will be hard-pressed to find anywhere else in Denmark. It is also here that you will find the photogenic old Vitsø Mølle (mill).
SKJOLDNÆS LIGHTHOUSE AND GOLF COURSE If you drive in the opposite direction, north through the village of Haven (the Garden),
WHO IS ARTHUR?
Arthur Jørgensen (1908–1994) founded Søby Værft, which is the largest workplace on the island today, employing around 100 people. It is also one of the biggest repair- and new-build shipyards in Denmark.
you will come to one of the most attractive lighthouses in Denmark: Skjoldnæs Lighthouse, which still flashes its warning out across the water at night. Built in 1881, the lighthouse is 22 metres high, and the round building is made of Bornholm granite. From the top of the tower, there is a magnificent view in clear weather, taking in the Baltic Sea, the waters of the Little Belt and the South Funen Archipelago. There is actually a reason why Skjoldnæs Lighthouse became one of the most impressive lighthouses in Denmark. Following the defeat in 1864 and the loss of Schleswig, Ærø became part of the Danish County of Svendborg. It was therefore decided to build an impressive lighthouse that could be seen all the way from Kiel as a salute to lost friends and family. One of the most beautiful seaside links in Europe has been laid out in the area around the lighthouse, and you can read more about this golf course on page 25.
Arthur arrived in Søby from Fjellebroen on Fyn in 1930 and founded Søby Motorfabrik. The small engine factory grew quickly, largely on ac count of the fishing boom Søby enjoyed in the years immediately following the Second World War. Around 1,200 engines were built at Arthur’s factory from the mid-1940s to the start of the 1960s. When that era came to a close, Arthur started to construct steel ships on a specially built slipway. The first dry dock was constructed in 1967 and the shipyard has three such docks today. In 1977, the coaster Pia Arre slid down the slipway, marking the start of a new chapter in the history of the yard. A further ten coasters were built here, at a rate of approximately one per year. In 1991, Søby Værft received an order for six cutters for the Marine Civil Defence Force. When they were delivered, the shipyard landed an order for six more. This continued until the yard had delivered 30 cutters and the Marine Civil Defence Force was fully equipped! Søby Værft, Arthur’s dream and life’s work has built fully 111 new vessels to date. The shipyard also played a significant role in the ongoing technological revolution with the delivery of Ellen – a 100% electrically powered ferry – in 2019. Arthur’s spirit is still alive and well in Søby!

VILLAGE LIFE ON ÆRØ
On Ærø, the small villages are liberally sprinkled along the main road between the large towns of Marstal, Ærøskøbing and Søby. Drive through the village streets and soak up the undisturbed idyll. Cows, horses and sheep graze on the fertile fields with their dikes and hedges, which surround the small, neatly kept houses and farms. Gardens bursting with flowers and fruit trees line the main street, while the village pond is home to ducks and other local fauna. Even though you may have decided to stay in one of the larger towns on the island during your holiday, there is every reason to take a drive to one of the small villages nearby. For example, you could visit Ærø Bryggeri (Brewery) in Store Rise or the 1 4 > ÆRØ GUIDE 2021
workshop of Tree & Earth Creams in Skovby. You can also go on a shopping expedition to Herremark just outside Søby, or buy delightful soaps from Sæberiet in Bregninge. This is also where you will find Uldgården, a large farm shop with a difference, selling all kinds of soft products, shoes, local delicacies and more. Did you know that even the local residents can get lost in Ommel? Or that Bregninge is the second-longest village in Denmark? Or that after you pass the town sign on your way into Tranderup, you actually drive out of Vindeballe two minutes later? The villages of Ærø are quite special, and you really should treat yourself to the experience of walking or cycling through at least
one of them – if for no other reason than to see all the roadside stalls.
THE VILLAGE CHURCHES STILL STAND A common trait of many of our villages is that they have their own churches, which are symbols of the small communities that still exist on Ærø. In fact, Ærø boasts no fewer than seven churches, each with its own distinctive features. Rise Church is the oldest one on the island, with a history stretching back to the 1100s. Bregninge Church is the only roadside church on Ærø and there are guided tours through out the summer. One peculiar feature of the churches in Rise, Tranderup and Bregninge is their circular graveyards. For the opening hours of all the churches, see page 49.

THE BEAUTIFUL BEACHES OF ÆRØ For many people, a life-long love affair with Ærø begins on the beach. The coastline helps define an island, and the beaches of Ærø are simply enchanting. Every summer, joyful visitors based at the nearby campsites and marinas make their way to the beaches. The splash of the water, the laughter of children and the general celebration of life make up the very essence of summer on the beaches of Ærø. In the other seasons of the year, too, the coastline of Ærø is the setting for all kinds of activities: angling, water sports, nature rambles, winter bathing and more.
THE BEACHES NEAR SØBY Well sheltered in a bay by a delightful little promontory, lies the beach of Søby with its fine sand and bathing jetty. This child-friendly beach is just a skimming stone’s throw from a playground, marina and café. If you set out from Søby on the country walk known locally as the “Tour de
PSST! DID YOU KNOW ... ... that Risemark Beach is actually a naturist beach? It was officially inaugurated as a naturist beach in 2014, and the Danish Naturists’ association held its annual Whit sun Meet there a few months later. The event attracted a great many visitors, who were warm in their praise of the beach, highlighting what a wonderful sandy beach it is to bathe from.
1 6 > ÆRØ GUIDE 2021
Jørbæk”, you will soon come to Jørbæk Strand, a gem of a sandy beach, bordered by unspoiled countryside where cattle graze. The beach has its own bathing jetty, which will lead you to the cleanest, emerald green water over a sandy seabed around 10 metres out – simply perfect for everyone who enjoys taking a running jump into the water or swimming long distances.
VESTERSTRAND BEACH NEAR ÆRØSKØBING Vesterstrand beach is located just outside Ærøskøbing, a few minutes’ easy walk from the marina and campsite. This child-friendly beach is known for its bathing jetty and its shallow water. The wonderful sandy beach lines the bay all the way to Urehoved, where you will often find kitesurfers enjoying their sport on windy days. The beach is lined with 71 of the 90 classic beach houses on the island – including the one that graces the cover of this brochure.
ERIKS HALE NEAR MARSTAL Eriks Hale (Erik’s Tail) is the name of a tongue of land on the outskirts of Marstal, close to the marina and camp site, bordered by two types of sea. On one side, you can swim in the warm, child-friendly water of Lille Hav (the Little Sea), which is an enclosed, shallow bay between the harbour and the beach, while on the other side, you will find the bracing Baltic Sea, where the waves are sometimes impressive in size. Eriks Hale is also the perfect place for
a country ramble, if you follow the land out as far as you can. This walk will also take you past the beautiful beach houses. When you reach the new break water on the tip of the tongue, the beach turns 90 degrees and you can continue along the outer side of the pier to the lime furnace at Frederiksøen. Stop here and enjoy your packed lunch, before retracing your route all the way back. It is a delightful walk with a difference, covering fully 4 km.
BREATHTAKING SUNSETS If you are looking for truly breathtaking sunsets along the coast, look no further than Tværbymark or Voderup on the south-western side of Ærø. Here, the sea turns to fire almost every evening – or afternoon, if you visit us in the cooler months.
TAKE A DIP WITH THE LOCALS Ærø is known for its year-round bathing. The Ærø Winter Swimmers make their way into the water from the BP Building at Ærøskøbing Harbour at 8 o’clock in the morning every day in the period 1 September–1 May. You are more than welcome to join them.
BEACH SPICES Take a stroll along Vesterstrand beach in the company of Nils Ørum, nature guide and gatherer. As you walk, Nils will show you how to identify different plants to use in your cooking, and give you tips and hints about how to collect and prepare them. Book a guided tour on vesteraas.dk.
THE BEACH HOUSES ON ÆRØ The beach houses are possibly the most Ærø-ish thing you will find on the island. In many ways, they are the hallmark of Ærø, and they hold a deep significance for both residents and guests. Their history can be traced back to 1920, when the first houses started to appear. There were big differences between the early constructions. Some were simply sheds, where there was just enough room to change clothes, while others resembled little holiday houses.
Today, there are no fewer than 90 small beach houses on the island: 19 on Eriks Hale in Marstal, and 71 on Vesterstrand beach in Ærøskøbing. They are in almost constant use in the summer, where they form the backdrop for many people’s fond memories of sunny days on Ærø. Marstal is home to perhaps the most frequently photographed beach house on our island – the little red one with the thatched
roof – while in Ærøskøbing you will find the house that graces the cover of this year’s brochure. It is the first one you see as you drive along Vesterstrand beach. To read the full history of the beach houses on the island, see visitaeroe.com/beachhouses. In the summer, you can also go on a guided tour of the beach houses on Vesterstrand beach, while outside the peak season, you can book the tour for yourself from Ærø Tours through their website at aeroetours.dk.

THE MAGNIFICENT NATURE AND GEOLOGY OF ÆRØ
VITSØ Ærø became an island as a result of a dramatic rise in the sea level following the last ice age, which ended approximately 11,700 years ago. The rising water levels at that time created one of the biggest “drowned” ice age landscapes in the world: the South Funen Archipelago. Ærø is part of “The South Funen Archipelago Geopark” that was established by the Municipalities of Svendborg, Faaborg-Midtfyn, Langeland and Ærø in 2018, with the purpose of increasing awareness of the unique geological, natural and cultural legacy of the region.
reclaimed land could be used as hay fields and pasture. Gråsten Nor is the largest uninterrupted stretch of meadow in the region of Fyn, making it a popular destination among lovers of nature. Interesting flowers that grow here include the beautiful and protected May orchid. The local population numbers more than 75,000 blossoming specimens on a hectare of land – possibly the largest collection of wild orchids in Denmark. There is an 8 km signposted nature ramble around the cove.
slow worms here. Voderup Klint is protected and the whole of Voderup has been designated an international nature conservation area under the Natura2000 scheme. In addition, Voderup Klint has been presented with Det Brune Johanneskors, a Danish award given to sights and attractions of national significance. There are good parking options close to the cliff, so you can visit on your own and take a stroll down onto the beach or eat lunch on one of the terraces. You can also choose to join a guided tour of the area.

VITSØ LAKE
The impressive Voderup Klint (Cliff) stands on the Baltic Sea coast, and is absolutely worth a visit. In the manner of giant steps, one stone terrace follows the next all the way down to the beach. The terrace formation is attributable to the strata of soil that make up the cliffs. The numerous hours of sun that Ærø enjoys, combined with the south-facing location of the cliff, provide fantastic conditions for a wide variety of plants and birds. You may even be lucky enough to spot sand lizards, adders and
Vitsø was originally a branch of the fjord, bordered by seaside meadows and with a direct connection to the sea. Over the course of many years, the area was dewatered following construction of a dam, and the progressive cultivation of the land led to the disappearance of many of the rare local plants. The dewatering of the area was halted in 2009, after which Vitsø was allowed to become an unbroken area of nature covering 150 hectares and comprising a large new lake surrounded by seaside and
Until 1856, Ærø actually consisted of two islands linked by a narrow stony reef – called a “Drej” in Danish. The two islands were separated by a large, shallow stretch of coastal water, Gråsten Nor (Cove), named for the large ducal manor house that stood at the western end of the reef (Drejet). In 1856, a causeway was built between the two islands and two pump mills were constructed to dewater the entire area. The work took 24 years, after which the 1 8 > ÆRØ GUIDE 2021

Three small islands have been established in the lake to protect breeding birds from natural predators, and Vitsø now serves as the final stop in Denmark for thousands of migratory birds preparing to fly south. Grey geese, ducks and a multitude of wading birds come here to breed, and you may also catch sight of a lapwing flitting above the meadow. From the car park at Søbygaard and the one in Vorbjerg Skov (woods), you can follow paths that lead around the lake. Some of them form part of the Archipelago Trail, an interlocking network of paths, clearly marked by blue signs on wooden poles.
NÆBBET The fascinating nature area known as “Næbbet” stretches over 300 metres, starting from the low cliff on the north side
facing the South Funen Archipelago. From a biological perspective, this is one of the most important and interesting areas on Ærø for bird-watchers and plant lovers. At the same time, the water that borders the stretch of land between Skjoldnæs Lighthouse and Næbbet is something of a goldmine for anglers on account of its depth and the strong current. The construction of the Kiel Canal in 1890 marked the start of mineral mining in the area, and after the end of the Second World War, there was a significant demand for materials to help rebuild the towns and cities of Northern Germany. In just a few years, large excavators created an almost barren, lunar landscape in the area, dotted with giant craters filled with water. Gravel mining was banned around 1975, after which new biotopes appeared: moorhens, swans, ducks and wading birds
WHITE-TAILED EAGLE now breed here, and even the rare little tern has been spotted in the area.
WHITE-TAILED EAGLES BREED ON ÆRØ In recent years, some bird-watchers have been lucky enough to spot white-tailed eagles on Ærø, and a pair of the eagles has even started breeding in the area around Bølgmose marsh. In the breeding season, the municipal authorities re-route the Archipelago Trail to give the nest a wide berth and allow the large birds some peace and quiet.
GUIDED TOURS AND EXPERIENCES IN THE COUNTRYSIDE OF ÆRØ A variety of guided tours through the countryside of Ærø are available in the summer months. For details, see visitaeroe.com/events.

WHEN PEACE AND QUIET
DESCEND… you can attend a lecture by an author at one of the local libraries, enjoy entertaining concerts in intimate venues, or visit some of the numerous artists and craftsmen in their open workshops and galleries. Many artists are only too keen to invite you inside to see their work and have a chat, and you are sure to hear more than a few interesting stories as you travel around the island.
As September progresses, the pace of life gradually slows on Ærø. This is the time when you can sometimes have the whole beach to yourself, while on the streets you may meet only a cat and a passing local, who will greet you with a cheery “Go’daw!” The hectic activity of the summer is replaced with a special sense of peace and quiet, and the local islanders gladly welcome the winter months. This is the season for cultivating social relations and making the most of the numerous cultural and recreational attractions on the island – and as a guest, you are most welcome to come along.
ART AND CULTURE Ærø has a rich cultural life. For example,
BIO ANDELEN (CINEMA) 2 0 > ÆRØ GUIDE 2021
Bio Andelen, the cinema in Ærøskøbing, is perhaps the smallest cinema in Denmark. It is open all year round, showing films in charming surroundings. Enjoy a glass of wine or a cup of hot chocolate as you snuggle down in your seat among the locals from Ærø. For details, see visitaeroe.com/events.
ACTIVE HOLIDAYS WITH ROSY CHEEKS Ærø is extremely popular among anglers, and this is an activity that is particularly well-suited to the cooler months, as the fish are more likely to bite when the weather isn’t quite as warm. Hiking and biking in brisk weather brings a glow to your cheeks and raises your spirits, and when you are fin ished for the day, nothing beats sitting in a charming holiday house, tucking into a deli-
cious hot dinner with your friends. You can also go kayaking or try Stand-Up Paddling (SUP), play golf or go horse riding all year round.
THE TEMPTING TABLE You can always find open cafés, bars and restaurants on Ærø. For opening hours of the various eateries in the period SeptemberMay, go to visitaeroe.com/openinghours. The list is updated every month.
TIME TO UNWIND AND INDULGE YOURSELF Many people see the winter months as the time to look inwards, and Ærø offers every opportunity for you to unwind and indulge yourself. Slow your pulse with a guided walk in tranquil surroundings, a yoga break with full board, or a visit to one of the many skilled treatment specialists on the island, who offer everything from craniosacral therapy and massage to coaching and lessons in personal development. You may even muster up the courage to take a refreshing dip in the sea with the local winter bathers. You can read more about treatments and therapy, etc. on page 49.

RIDE YOUR OWN
TOUR DE ÆRØ Ærø is simply made for cycling excursions and holidays. The island has fully 150 km of wonderful cycling roads with no – or only light – traffic. In fact, you can actually follow a signposted 100 km route without cycling the same stretch of road twice. The tour of the island comprises encounters with idyllic hollyhocks, beautiful country side, timber-framed houses and grazing cattle – all set against the deep blue archipelago as a constant backdrop. The route takes in challenging hills, gravel paths and wonderful stretches of flat road. You will often find yourself cycling along the coast, and we would dare to claim that you will rarely have seen a finer view. On Ærø, you can follow cycle routes 91 and 92, as well as 17.5 km of the breathtaking Baltic Sea Route (N8). Moreover, you can take on the “Ærø Alps” on routes of 20, 50 and 100 km, which Flying Heroes, the local cycling club, has put together. Look for the poles with the red, amber and green markings (see the photo on this page). Bring your own bike or rent one from the numerous bike hire outlets on the island. You can choose anything from electric
cycles and mountain bikes to an authentic rickshaw. For a list of all the bike hire outlets on Ærø, see page 49. If your legs run out of energy, you can put your bike on the back of a bus. This service is free of charge.
At the libraries and the tourist information offices at Søby and Ærøskøbing Harbour, you can pick up detailed cycle maps showing all the good routes, fishing spots, shelters and so on. For helpful tips and tricks for a successful cycling holiday on Ærø, as well as recom mendations for good cycling routes, see visitaeroe.com/cycling.
WE LOOK AFTER YOU AND YOUR WHEELS We want you, as a cyclist, to feel welcome and in good hands on Ærø, so to help you, there are 20 members of the Bike Friends scheme on the island. Bike Friends are places where you can always find a pump, a puncture repair kit, drinking water and access to a toilet – or, as a minimum, directions to the nearest one. For a list of all Bike Friends and their addresses, see page 49.
PSST! DID YOU KNOW ... ... that the Baltic Sea Route covers fully 820 km, running from the middle of Jutland to the south of Zealand? The route leads through a variety of Danish regions, including Southern Jutland and the islands of Ærø, Fyn and Lolland-Falster. A whole 820 km of charm on two wheels!

LACE UP YOUR BOOTS
AND ENJOY THE COUNTRYSIDE OF ÆRØ The biggest attraction on Ærø is without doubt the countryside itself. The combination of the gentle coastline towards the South Funen Archipelago and the harsher, less polished stretches of coast facing the Baltic Sea make the countryside of Ærø quite special – and a bracing walk is the perfect way to experience it all. Ærø has a wonderful network of hiking paths that lead along the coastline and across the open landscape. For example, you can walk the section of the Archipelago Trail that starts in Søby and ends in Faldsled on South-west Funen. The trail traces the South Funen Archipelago, and Ærø boasts fully 36 magnificent kilometres of this nature hike. You can also walk along the south side of Ærø, following the seaside trail – a 30 km route that largely follows cycle route no. 91. Take a detour to visit the coast and the cliffs at Voderup Klint, which has a number of its own absolutely beautiful and slightly more challenging hiking trails. If historical walks are more your cup of tea, we can warmly recommend the track around Gravendal, the trail at Gråsten Nor (Cove)
or Ejnar's Trail. There is no end to the possibilities! You can pick up hiking and cycling maps free of charge from the tourist information offices and libraries on the island. For additional inspiration, see visitaeroe.com/hiking.
HIKING HOLIDAYS ON ÆRØ
Book a hiking holiday at Gæstgiveri Breg ninge, for example, where both the seaside trail and the Archipelago Trail pass close by,
and where the beds are delightfully soft. Hanne, your hostess, is happy to organise packed lunches for you, and the free bus service stops right outside the front door.
SLEEP OUT UNDER THE STARS If you’re a fan of sleeping outdoors, Ærø provides plenty of opportunities to spend the night at primitive campsites and shelters in beautiful surroundings. For an overview of all the sites, see page 50.
FREE BUS SERVICE If there is one thing both guests and local residents make full use of, it is the local bus service – which is free for everyone, all year round. Buses depart from Marstal, Ærøskøbing and Søby every hour. The trip lasts approx. 1 hour from start to finish. And, of course, the bus carries bikes as well – although only to a limited extent and from selected stops. For a list of these stops, see the bus timetable at visitaeroe.com/freebus.
BUS FROM MARSTAL TO OMMEL AND KRAGNÆS You can also take the bus from Marstal to Ommel and Kragnæs on Tuesdays and Fridays (two departures per day). For departure times, see the bus timetable at visitaeroe.com/freebus. ÆRØ GUIDE 2021 > 2 3
WORLD-CLASS ANGLING No matter what the weather is doing, you will always be able to find a great fishing spot on Ærø. The conditions for angling are ideal all year round, and you are almost guaranteed to land a prize sea trout from somewhere along the unique coastline. Ærø is surrounded by fine fishing waters. Measuring 30 km long and just 9 km across at the widest point, the island has fully 80 km of coastline from where you can fish for sea trout all year. On the south coast, steep cliffs stretch towards the sky and the water conceals numerous rocks and stones, whereas the coast on the north side is distinguished by shallow bays lined with eel grass. The north

side in particular is especially good for flyfishing and wade fishing. In the course of just 15 minutes, you can move from one fishing spot to another, where the wind and water conditions are completely different. So if the wind is unfavourable where you are, you can quickly switch to a different spot with more shelter and clear water to fish in. Few other islands offer so many different places to fish.
WOULD YOU LIKE TO PIT YOUR WITS AGAINST THE COASTS OF ÆRØ? You can, of course, rent all the fishing equipment you need on Ærø, and you can even go on guided tours with knowledgeable locals who can show you where the best fishing
spots are to be found. If the rest of your family is equally keen on fishing, you can all head off together on a family trip. During the spring and summer, you can book an angling holiday at Gæstgiveri Bregninge, where Hanne, your hostess, will be happy to prepare your day’s catch for dinner. Gæstgiveri Bregninge also has a cleaning table, smoking oven and freezer space. In the early autumn, you can visit the island for a Sea Trout Weekend. Anglers from all parts of the world descend on Ærø to spend a whole weekend fishing for sea trout – and there are naturally prizes to be won! For tips and hints for a wonderful angling holiday on Ærø, see visitaeroe.com/fishing.
GOLF
WITH A SEA VIEW
Ærø is home to the one seaside links in Denmark with a sea view from all the greens. The course is located on the northern tip of the island, bordered by sea on three sides, and with Skjoldnæs Lighthouse in the middle, standing proud as a prominent hallmark. It is an 18-hole seaside course, the like of
which you would otherwise have to travel to Scotland or Ireland to experience. The view is unparalleled, especially in the summer, when you can see a flurry of sailing ships on the waters of the Baltic Sea and the South Funen Archipelago, making their way around Skjoldnæs Lighthouse. The vessels often pass so close to the course that you
can hear the voices on board if the wind is blowing from the right direction. A round of golf on this course is a rewarding experience and many of our guest players return again and again. There are more than a few challenges – on both the front and the back nine – especially when the wind picks up. You also need to beware of the numerous protected dikes. That said, the course is eminently playable. The front nine run along the south side of Ærø, while the back nine follow the coast behind Skjoldnæs Lighthouse on the northern tip of the island. Do yourself a favour and swing by the course – if only to admire the view ...
WOULD YOU LIKE TO PLAY WHAT MAY BE THE MOST BEAUTIFUL GOLF COURSE IN DENMARK? The course is open every day from sunrise to sunset and to play it, you can choose between a day pass, flex membership or full membership of Ærø Golf Club. For details, see visitaeroe.com/golfing. ÆRØ GUIDE 2021 > 2 5
ÆRØ’S PAST AND HISTORY
LINDSBJERG GALLEY GRAVE
STONE AGE You will find fascinating traces of ancient times in many places on Ærø. Giant burial mounds, galley graves and dolmens testify to the presence of our forefathers over a period measured in thousands of years. For example, next to Rise Church stands a large Stone Age dolmen in the shape of a ship, while Lindsbjerg and Kragnæs are the site of well-preserved galley graves.
THE VIKING AGE Until just a few years ago, the Viking Age was
an almost unexplored chapter in the history of Ærø, but the discovery of an ancient trading post at Havsmarken on the south-east coast of the island has shed new light on this period. The discovery clearly positions Ærø as a key point on the important Viking Age trading route, running from Constantinople, via Russia and Birka and Visby in Sweden, to Hedeby in North Schleswig, which was the most important trading settlement in Northern Europe at that time. At Vejsnæs Nakke, you can still see traces of St. Albert’s Church, which was originally built
as a fortified position. The re-created installation consists of a 3-metre-deep trench and a sturdy earthwork emplacement which has been dated to the Viking Age, around 1000 AD. The location took on a new function in the 1300s, when a church was built on the site. Around 50 graves have been unearthed in the immediate vicinity of the church, including a great many children’s graves. Other finds include a large number of coins, which accurately date the period in which the church was used from the mid1300s to the Reformation in 1536. For details of other ancient relics, see visitaeroe.com/prehistoricmonuments.
MORE RECENT HISTORY From the fourteenth century to 1864, Ærø was variously united and divided into a series of enclaves under German duchy rule. Ærø was positioned outside the toll limits of the Danish realm, which created a fertile basis for a smuggling industry that was actually the way of life for a large number of Ærø residents. Ærø was unified as a single administrative unit in 1750. A memorial stone at Olde Mølle mill marks the unifi cation.

MUSEUMS ON ÆRØ
ÆRØ MUSEUM
ÆRØ MUSEUM In 2019, Ærø’s museum of culture and history re-opened, hosting a new, permanent exhibition entitled “Ærø – our island”, which is devoted to narratives and artefacts that present centuries of history of life on Ærø. In a simple and straightforward manner, the exhibition takes you on a journey back through time: from present day life on the island to the rural society of ages past. As the journey unfolds, you are introduced to several key topics in the history of the island, from the wedding tourism of modern times to Ærø as a part of the Duchy of Schleswig before the defeat at Dybbøl in 1864. Enjoy the encounters with lives lived here: the dandified peasants of the 1800s, the German-American bride and groom, merchant Lauritz Kock and the deaf-mute Philip of Ærøskøbing. Otto von Bismarck, the Iron Chancellor himself, also puts in an appear ance. The exhibition explains his relation 2 8 > ÆRØ GUIDE 2021
ship to Ærø, and reveals why the people of Ærø head for the beach to boil eggs on Easter Saturday. It also tells the story behind the island’s two local flags.
The exhibition has already received warm praise from visitors on account of its wonderful stories and its atmosphere.
A visit to the museum garden (in its 1920 form) provides a fine impression of a greener, more fertile Ærøskøbing, which is otherwise hidden away from the world in the closed courtyards of the town.
The red house on the corner of Brogade and Gyden is one of the best-preserved eighteenth century timber-framed houses in Ærøskøbing. The building has also retained its original interior, with narrow staircases and an old fireplace. The house was filled with life and laughter after it was purchased by sculptor Gunnar Hammerich (1893–1977) who furnished it with an impressive collection of antiquities, including 3,000 Dutch tiles, Kellinghusen faience and other household utensils from Southern Jutland and the South Funen Archipelago in the period 1600–1800. Gunnar Hammerich worked tirelessly to promote preservation of the original ambience of Ærøskøbing for many years. He was a key

Hammerichs Hus is a monument to the development of the town over the course of the twentieth century. His artistic oeuvre is exemplified in numerous monuments on the island.

The main building and the more recent farm buildings are seated on two artificial islands clad in impressive stonework. You enter the building via the reconstructed drawbridge over the moat. Søbygaard stands next to a mediaeval embankment built in the twelfth century, from the top of which there is a
magnificent view out over Vitsø Lake and the island of Als. Søbygaard is home to a rich variety of wildlife – particularly frogs, which can often be heard croaking lustily in the reeds. An openair stage has been established in the area behind the barn, where the traditional and festive Ærø Festspil (theatre) is performed. During the summer, the manor hosts a variety of activities for children and adults alike through the Kys Frøen (Kiss the Frog) activity centre. For details, see page 27.

Exhibitions and concerts The main building and the barn host changing special exhibitions in the summer months. The concert hall is decorated with works by the celebrated artist Sven Havsteen Mikkelsen – actually the designs for glass mosaics that now adorn a number of Nordic churches. Sven HavsteenMikkelsen lived the last 25 years of his life in Øster Bregningemark, which is not far from Søbygaard. During the summer, the hall is the venue for concerts of classical music performed by musicians from Denmark and abroad. For the latest updates, see: visitaeroe.com/events.
THE OLD SHIPYARD
MARSTAL MARITIME MUSEUM Marstal Maritime Museum is the place to go for a good helping of nautical fun and adventure! Here, you can experience what it is like to sail on an authentic yacht, climb to the top of a ship’s mast, or recline in the saloon on a steam-powered ferry. The museum has more than 300 model ships as well as a wealth of remarkable artefacts brought home by sailors from their travels on the seven seas – a shrunken head, for example, which is also mentioned in Carsten Jensen’s best-selling novel "Vi, de druknede" ("We, the drowned"). There is also a comprehensive collection of works by J. E. C. Rasmussen, famed for his paintings of seascapes and Greenland. The museum organises fun activities for children in the school holidays (see page 27).
FLASKE-PETER'S COLLECTION
Eriksen's Square Eriksens Plads (Square) is something of seedbed for wooden shipbuilding, and here you will find a partially constructed schooner that stands as a sculptural symbol of the comprehensive shipyard activity that has dominated the town. The boat-builder’s hall is open when the doors are open, and the motor shed is open when the motor is running. The whole area is a delightful little oasis with a barbecue site, benches and tables.
Flaske-Peter (Bottle Peter) (1873–1960) managed to build more than 1,700 ships in bottles and 50 large model ships. Around 500 can be seen in the collection, which also features the memorial cross he made for himself, containing seven built-in ships in bottles – one for each of the seven seas. The museum also includes an exhibition about the famous frigate Jylland, and the Ærø ferry company D/S Ærø. A new exhibition of bottles on loan from the Museum of Southern Jutland will be opening in 2021.
FLASKE-PETER’S COLLECTION
THE OLD SHIPYARD
Visit Flaske-Peter’s collection of ships in bottles, which has been on display in Ærøskøbing’s former poorhouse since 1943.
Det Gamle Værft (The Old Shipyard) comprises living workshops, where both children and adults can experience the history of seafaring right up close and get their hands dirty, too. In the smithy, you can try working red-hot iron – under expert guidance, of course – while in the copper workshop you can make your own bracelet. In the rigger loft, you can try your hand at making rope, bind your own keychain and tackle a variety of seaman’s tasks. For details, see page 27. Out behind the slipway, you will find the riveted steel ferry M/S Angelo formerly the S/S Svendborgsund from 1907, which once sailed the Marstal–Rudkøbing–Strynø route, laden with passengers and cargo. The focus here is on the processes used to build the old, riveted iron and steel ships, an intricate craft that was common more than a century ago. Both the experiences and the exhibitions at Det Gamle Værft are constantly changing and developing, and a variety of restoration tasks are under way. HIGH DAYS AND HOLIDAYS ON ÆRØ
WHEN THE FLAGS FLY ON ÆRØ It is a tradition on Ærø to share good times and sad times alike by raising flags for and with one another. So it is not unusual to encounter a whole street lined with flags when the local young people are celebrating their confirmation. Similarly, an entire village will fly its flags at half mast to mark a funeral. In Marstal, all the streets are colourfully decorated when the town is celebrating the launch of a large vessel, and both Marstal and Ærøskøbing are quick to bring out the flags for their town parties and annual Bird Shoot.
SHROVETIDE AND TWELFTH NIGHT If you are in town on Ærø on the evening of Shrove Monday, or if you have been invited in by some of the locals who are game for a laugh, you may be lucky enough to experience a knock at the door, followed by the entry of some strange characters wearing masks and talking in high-pitched voices, demanding a schnapps glass full of port. And a drinking straw. They will then start telling fantastic tales for the entertainment of all 3 2 > ÆRØ GUIDE 2021
present – ideally about current topics on the island, which the mask-wearing visitors are quick to parody. A special trait of the island is that the residents wear masks on Twelfth Night in Bregninge and Søby, while in recent years, Bregninge Church has held masked services to mark the holy date – a different, slightly mystical experience!
EASTER Easter is a special time on Ærø. This is when family and friends gather together and head for the beach on Easter Saturday to boil eggs. So on this day, you may well see closed shops with a note on the door explain ing: We’re out boiling eggs! The wind and weather conditions don’t matter, everyone simply puts on warm clothes and loads up a wheelbarrow or similar transportation device with eggs, sausages, beer and soft drinks – and of course, a pot to boil the eggs and sausages in. The fuel for the fire is gat hered around the beach, and the cold sea water is perfect for cooling the drinks.
DENMARK’S NO. 1 CHRISTMAS ISLAND Ever dreamed of a Christmas season with a difference? Free from hustle and bustle, stress and shopping centres? Then head for Ærø over Christmas. With its relaxed atmosphere and space for everyone, Ærø is the perfect setting for distilling the very essence of Christmas. Rent a holiday house in the country with room for friends and family, or book a charming room at one of the authentic hotels and guest houses, and spend quality time with your partner, strolling through the
delightful streets on Ærø, resplendent in their Christmas decorations.
CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS ON ÆRØ Christmas on Ærø is synonymous with traditions for children and adults alike. In Marstal, Santa and his family sail ashore on the good ship Samka, and the subsequent lighting of the Christmas lights is a popular attraction among both local residents and guests. On the day before Christmas Eve, you can head over to Søby to watch the
magnificent elves’ parade. The procession sees the streets of Søby packed with elves large and small accompanying Santa on his post wagon, and the event winds up with bags of treats, hot drinks and wonderful bonhomie. In Ærøskøbing, the annual Christmas market is held on three successive Saturdays, forming the centrepoint for memorable Christmas activities for visitors of all ages. To find out more about Christmas on Ærø, see visitaeroe.com/christmas.

EXPERIENCE ÆRØ FROM THE AIR
GO SAILING
Starling Air organises flights over Ærø and the surrounding area. Experience Ærø in its entirety, taking in its colourful rapeseed fields and magnificent stretches of countryside at the same time. It is an impressive sight! Starling Air is based at Ærø Airstrip (EKAE), which was originally established in 1960, making it one of the oldest airstrips in Denmark. The international airstrip links Ærø to the whole of Europe and welcomes a large number of guest aircraft in the summer months. The airstrip has two grass runways (789 metres) and is located at Gråsten Nor, midway between Ærøskøbing and Marstal. For additional information about sightseeing flights and Ærø Airstrip, see starling.dk.
From Ærø Boat Charter, you can rent a boat – with or without a captain – and go island hopping in the South Funen Archipelago. For example, you can take a trip to the island of Drejø and spend the night in a shelter, or go exploring in the unspoiled countryside of Hjortø. To find out more, visit aeroeboatcharter.com. VISIT BIRKHOLM, ÆRØ’S “LITTLE BROTHER” Birkholm is one of the smallest inhabited Danish islands, and it is part of the Muni
cipality of Ærø. There are actually more houses than residents on Birkholm. Several of the houses, which are holiday homes today, are owned by people who live in other parts of Denmark and spend a good deal of time looking after them. A small, loyal group of residents who were born and raised on the island are devoted to keeping the old traditions alive and take pride in ensuring that everything is intact in summer and winter alike. There are no eateries on Birkholm, but there is a small self-service shop and a marina, as well as countryside that is perfect for hiking, and a number of great fishing spots. To find out more about Birkholm and the options for trips to the little island, see visitaeroe.com/birkholm.
WEDDING ISLAND ÆRØ Romance is alive and well on Ærø! Every year, more than 2,000 couples say “I do” to each other in delightful surrounding on the island. The people of Ærø take pride in the fact that
their island attracts so many joyful couples year after year, and it is clear that the local businesses involved in the numerous ceremonies in one way or another are also proud and honoured to be able to play a part. Ærø’s reputation as a wedding island has spread around much of the world, with plenty of coverage in international media. Even the signs on the town streets and the beautiful colours that decorate many of the houses there testify to an elevated level of aesthetics.
A CREATIVE SETTING Ærø Kunsthøjskole (School of Art) is the centrepoint of modern artistic life on the island and a beacon for art schools everywhere. The school runs courses all year round and in summer it hosts a major exhibition at Søby harbour to showcase the students’ work. For the past few years, the Ærø Dog Days culture festival has also been helping to put Ærø on the map as an island that is making its mark on the young, more experimental art scene.

FOR HEDONISTS The village of Rise is home to the local brewery Ærø Bryggeri, which has become famous throughout Denmark for its fine, tasty beers – including organic brews. Right next door is Ærø Cigar, a small tobacco plantation that makes hand-rolled Ærø cigars. Here, you can follow every link of the chain from tobacco seed to finished cigar, as almost the entire process is carried out by hand in Store Rise. Den Gamle Købmandsgaard (The Old Merchant’s Villa) in Ærøskøbing houses Ærø Whisky Distillery and Visitors’ Centre. Ærø Whisky is an authentic Ærø product, where
the contents of each bottle can be traced back to the specific field on the island where the barley malt was grown. Summer isn’t summer without ice cream, and both Aroma Is and No 1 in Ærøskøbing sell mouth-watering home-made flavours. Hattesens Konfektfabrik is enjoying formidable success for its hand-made liquorice confectionery, where the motto is: Less sugar, more taste! THE MARINAS ON ÆRØ
MARSTAL MARINA “The way to get to a real island is to sail there!” And this is what you have every opportunity to do when it comes to Ærø. In addition to our five regular ferries, we have fully four marinas, each with its own individual charm. The three large ones are located in Marstal, Ærøskøbing and Søby, while the fourth – smaller and wonderfully charming – one is in Ommel.
bathroom facilities. It is also within easy walking distance of the town, where there are plenty of shops, restaurants and ice cream booths. The view from the marina isn’t bad either. The picture here shows the view out over Eriks Hale – a delightful beach lined with beach houses in all colours. You can read more about Marstal on page 8.
MARSTAL MARINA
At Ærøskøbing Harbour, you will find a wellequipped marina with attractions including a playground, barbecue area and mini-golf course. It is also within easy walking dis tance of the popular Vesterstrand beach with its iconic beach houses. There are good shopping options nearby, too. Right next to the marina is a large discount supermarket, and if you continue on into town, you can visit Ærøskøbing Bageri (Bakery) that sells a wide range of tasty Danish bread and cakes. You can read more about Ærøskøbing on page 10.
The biggest marina on the island is in Marstal. It was named Harbour of the Year by the Dansk Tursejlere (Danish Tour Sailors) association in 2019. The marina has a full range of facilities, including a playground, charming barbecue shelters and good toilet/
HARBOUR FEES On Ærø, we like to welcome our guests in person. This means there are no payment machines in our marinas. Instead, we ask you to pay our harbour fee collector who visits all the jetties every morning and evening. You can pay cash (DKK and EUR) as well as with Danish and international credit cards.

ÆRØSKØBING MARINA
SØBY MARINA Privately owned Søby Marina is a charming and well-run marina. The harbour presents a range of facilities and attractions including a playground with a barbecue area, picnic benches and a cookhouse, making it easy to prepare the evening meal while your
children play nearby. Within easy walking distance, there is a Dagli’ Brugsen supermarket selling a wide range of food and other items, as well as Finn’s Bageri & Café, which sells Danish bread and cakes at their impressive best. In fact, many of the local islanders are happy to drive to Søby purely to enjoy treats from Finn’s bakery for their breakfast or with their afternoon coffee. Søby Havn is a fishing and industrial harbour centred around Søby Shipyard. This means you can often see large coasters and fishing vessels making their way into the harbour. You can read more about Søby on page 12.
KLEVEN HARBOUR On the north-east coast of Ærø, near the village of Ommel, lies Kleven Havn, a charming little harbour run by Kleven Bådelaug, the local boating lodge. The harbour has retained its authentic atmosphere and maritime ambience, and serves as an excellent alternative to the larger marinas. Facilities close to the harbour include a small toilet building and a primitive campsite. In addition, some keen local residents have set up an outdoor hot tub with a wonderful view out over the harbour – perfect for keeping warm on cool evenings. The nearest shops are in Marstal, approx. 3 km from the harbour.
BROWN BARS
AND TOWN LIFE ON ÆRØ On Ærø, you have every opportunity to go out for a beer or two all year round. This is because you will find an inn or an authentic "brown" bar in almost every town and village on the island.
Almost all inns and bars on the island have a dart board and/or a billiard table, and it is not unusual for the locals to hold a little billiards tournament on a Friday afternoon.
A POINT OF REFERENCE IN A SMALL COMMUNITY
After around 8 o’clock in the evening, the average age of the regulars drops sharply, the juke box plays a little louder, and the ambience changes to coloured lights and fancy drinks. It’s time for the young people to hit the town! The biggest dance floor is to be found at the Miss Sophy discotheque in Marstal, but you can usually find space to show off your moves to the music at many of the smaller establishments on the island as well. Moreover, Landbogaarden in Ærøskøbing organises great dance parties all year round. As a new addition to the island nightlife, Ærø now has two cocktail bars: Ballast Bar Butik in Marstal and Ærø Guesthouse & Café in Ærøskøbing. For an overview, see page 48.
In the same way as in many other small communities, the inns and brown bars play a special role on Ærø. This is because Ærø is a seafaring society, and the inns and bars serve as points of reference for many of the seamen when they return home from their latest trips and voyages – this is a place where people look out for and take care of each other. From as early as 10 o’clock in the morning, you can meet the first regulars in the local brown bar. This is where people come to exchange tall tales, share experience and put the world to rights until deep into the afternoon.

4 4 > ÆRØ GUIDE 2021
At the same time, Ærø is an ultra-modern island with well-functioning infrastructure including a lightning-fast fibre network, exciting job opportunities, a hospital, GPs, dentists, schools, kindergartens, day-care centres, nursing homes, sports halls, fitness centres, a cinema ... pretty much everything a modern island resident might need, in fact. Other attractions include the almost limitless views out over the sea, the wide expanse of sky, the nearby beaches and the breathtaking countryside that surrounds you, perfect for unwinding in when the working day is done. The ferries are the lifeblood of Ærø – both in the peak season when they bring guests from near and far to light up the island with joy and laughter, and when the days become shorter, the pace gears down and life on the island turns inwards. That is when people have the time and energy to explore and develop their dreams, to create and cultivate valuable communities.

ÆRØ TAKES THE LEAD ON
ENERGY ISSUES On Ærø, we have already come a long way with our green transition. We generate our own green electricity and district heating, and the electric ferry Ellen has demonstrated that electricity from wind turbines can also be used to replace fossil fuels in ferry operations. The Municipality of Ærø has the stated ambition of ensuring that the island is selfsufficient in renewable energy by 2025, and completely fossil-free by 2030.
SELF-SUFFICIENT IN WIND TURBINE ELECTRICITY As early as in 1985, the biggest wind farm in Denmark at that time was built on Ærø, when eleven new wind turbines were added to the six existing ones. Today, Ærø has six new, highly efficient wind turbines that generate more current on an annual basis than the island itself can consume. One special feature of the wind turbines on the island is that they are all owned and operated by local wind turbine associations, proving the commitment of the island residents to the green transition.
FERRY POWERED PURELY BY ELECTRICITY
The innovative electric ferry Ellen can sail seven times longer per charge than any other electric ferry in the world, making it a role model for future electric ferry operations. It entered into service on the route between Søby and Fynshav in August 2019, and the evaluation report from June 2020 shows that running exclusively on electricity is actually the cheapest solution for the operator, viewed over the full service life of the ferry. The idea of an electric ferry arose on Ærø, and Ellen was designed and built by Ærø-based businesses.
DISTRICT HEATING BASED ON SOLAR POWER AND OTHER RENEWABLES Ærø has almost 7 m2 of solar panels per resident, which is probably a world record. However, the large expanse of solar panels can only cover a part of the island’s total consumption of district heating. The remain ing district heating requirements are covered by heat pump technology and carbon-neutral biomass (wood and straw). The Marstal Fjernvarme solar heating instal-
lation is the biggest on the island and one of the largest in Denmark, comprising a total of 33,365 m2 of solar panel area. The facility covers around 55% of the district heating requirements in Marstal, Ommel and Græsvænge.
NEW IDEAS FOR THE GREEN TRANSITION The numerous innovative ideas that drive Ærø’s green transition stem from a fruitful working relationship involving Ærø EnergyLab, Marstal Navigation School and members of the island’s business community. Upcoming initiatives focus on areas such as finding new ways to store the surplus power from the wind turbines on the island so that it can be used locally, even when the wind isn’t blowing.
GUIDED TOURS OF ÆRØ ENERGYLAB Ærø EnergyLab organises a variety of guid ed tours and programmes for primary and secondary schools, universities, delegations from all parts of the world, energy tourists and other interested parties.

Maritime Center Ærø holds once again an International Small Boat Regatta. The races will take place next to Ærøskøbing harbor. Parallel to the event, Ærø Jazz Festival takes place in the city, so we guarantee an enjoyable evening.
A resort area of individual holiday houses set in landscaped grounds in Ærøskøbing, several with a view over the marina and close to the beach at Vester Strand, one of the best on Ærø. The houses (37 m2) all have a lounge with kitchen niche, a separate bedroom, loft bedroom with space for two beds and a bathroom with shower. The houses are serviced by Hotel Ærøhus. The marina is close to the shops. A holiday house resort that is ideal for guests who want peace and quiet. The area has recently been completely renovated. There are three different categories. You find different indoor design and equipment (A, B and C). The houses are owned by individual owners.

Let the silence embrace you in beautiful surroundings near beach, Forrest, and town. We have tent areas and camp units with a stunning ocean view, units for campers, cottages with a bathroom, and Glamping cabins. You will find all of this at our nice little family driven campsite in Marstal.

You can also buy smoked foods to take home all days of the week – we provide vacuum-packing. All the smokehouse menus are available as take-away – with 100% compostable disposable service – now you are ready for your trip out into the nature of Ærø – or for the ferry trip home.
Take-away
All our smoked fish are served with bread and butter, green salad or potato salad – or ”maybe” also with our fry-free French fries on the side. Enjoy your food with a draft beer, wine, water, 100% natural apple juice, or maybe a schnapps – or the Ærø-specialty, a ”Riga”. You can also buy coffee – maybe with a piece of chocolate cake – cappuccino, café latte, hot chocolate with whipped cream or a SKARØ ice cream.
At Ærøskøbing Røgeri, we serve fish fillets and French fries without the use of deep frying, that is why we call it a fry-free area. The oven-baked fish fillet or the warm fish cake with French fries and remoulade is ready in just a few minutes.
Fry-free area
Ærøskøbing Røgeri is a seafood restaurant in the most unpretentious way – it is open all days of the week from April to October. Here you can enjoy a quick lunch, a light evening meal or – at the height of the season – the smokehouse evening menus with grilled salmon, trout, halibut or zander in the courtyard.
