Welcome to our 2021-22 season, as we rejoice in OBT’s triumphant return to the stage with six robust programs that will thrill, surprise, delight – and even stand your hair on end!

Following an 18 month absence, I am particularly excited to present a season chock-full of OBT firsts, with new ballets and fresh choreographic voices we can’t wait to share with Portland. Among them: SculptedClouds, a mesmerizing creation from rising star Jennifer Archibald which premiered at our outdoor summer performance OBT LIVE last June, Dreamland from choreographer and former Australian Ballet star Danielle Rowe, and a World Premiere from newcomer Michelle Manzanales.

We are also pleased to add two major works from Ben Stevenson to the OBT repertory. In the fall we bring the intimate Three Preludes, a romantic work for two dancers that has been performed by major companies around the world, American Ballet Theatre and Paris Opera Ballet among them. And in February get set for Stevenson’s sensational Dracula, a spinetingling spectacle that will have you at the edge of your seat!

There is so much to experience this season, and we hope you will take the journey with us. I look forward to welcoming you back “face-to-face” in the theater.

SculptedClouds Jennifer Archibald | Lisa Gerrard & Brendan Perry, Roger Goula This fall we return to the stage with three powerful ballets that bring us face-toface with human nature. In Ben Stevenson’s intimate Three Preludes, a cautious studio flirtation between two dancers transforms into passion as they are swept away by their love. Adding a thrilling counterpoint, we present George Balanchine’s iconic The Four Temperaments, a mesmerizing work based on the ‘temperaments’ of human disposition. We close with SculptedClouds, an otherworldly exploration of our relationship with nature from rising star Jennifer Archibald.

Last year this cherished tradition was suspended, leaving an empty stage in place of our beloved production. As we return to a more familiar world, we do so with a sense that nothing can be taken for granted – especially a time honored tradition that connects us through music and dance. We raise a glass and welcome the return of George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker®. Once again we will join Marie and her charming Nutcracker Prince as they are swept away by dancing snowflakes to a magical land of sweets ruled by the Sugar Plum Fairy and all to Tchaikovsky’s brilliant score!

It can be demanding, consuming, and even a bit . . . bloodthirsty. Get ready as OBT takes a uniquely Portland approach to the month of love with the premiere of Ben Stevenson’s deliciously spine-chilling Dracula, based on Bram Stoker’s 1897 gothic novel. A haunting score by Franz Liszt sets the tone for this immersive fairy tale, with awe-inspiring theatrics, vampire brides, stunning sets, and exquisite dancing.

Don’t miss this Broadway spectacle that will spook and delight young and old alike, and remind us all of the power of true love.

Recommended for children ages 8 and up.

In Dreams – OBT Premiere!

Trey McIntyre | Roy Orbison In this program we enter a mysterious and time-bending dream world. We begin with the return of Matjash Mrozewski’s The Lost Dance. Set to Owen Belton’s eerie score, the riveting work evokes the cinematic world of David Lynch as seven figures emerge almost as ghosts to engage in a kind of ritual dance. We follow The Lost Dance with two OBT premieres; first from audience favorite Trey McIntyre, who takes inspiration from legendary Roy Orbison’s impassioned songs to create the achingly romantic In Dreams. The program closes with Dreamland, a highly charged work from choreographer and former Australian Ballet star, Danielle Rowe. Her powerful and mesmerizing ballet springs from a nightmare of being trapped and clawing to break free.

Fluidity of Steel Darrell Grand Moultrie | Ezio Bosso, Kenji Bunch, and Oliver Davis At last! The much anticipated second installment of our The Americans series celebrating the unique voices and rich history of American choreographers returns.In this program we feature an OBT first-time commission from rising star Michelle Manzanales whose piece Con Brazos Abiertos for Ballet Hispánico was lauded by the LA Times as one of “heart tugging beauty.”

In high demand, Ms. Manzanales will premiere work on both coasts next season with commissions from Paul Taylor Dance Company as well as OBT. Rounding out this innovative production we are delighted to bring back two audience favorites: Darrell Grand Moultrie’s whimsical Fluidity of Steel celebrating maleness without conformity; and Ashley Roland and Jamey Hampton’s Big Shoes harkening back to that moment when we dressed in grown-ups’ clothes and imagined the vast road that stretched on ahead, forever beckoning, daring us.
