LETTER FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

Temporary Gifts Dear Friend, Before this pandemic year, as the curtain would rise on an OBT performance—back when we would all gather shoulder to shoulder without concern, I think we were already aware of the fleeting nature of dance performance. Whether it was a full-length classical ballet or something more contemporary, we would experience the inspiration of the art and let it wash over us, knowing that the experience was a precious gift, but on some level, also recognizing it was a temporary gift. That essential fact contains within it a perfect analogy to life itself: beautiful shining moments that are temporary gifts bounded by the reality of our individual lifespans.

In that respect, the dancers who thrill us with their mastery, their physical prowess, and their artistry are our stand-ins; we applaud their efforts because they remind us of our own potential to soar. Dancers embody, in the fullest sense, our own potential—meaning that the art of the dance is given bodily form by the young artist-athletes who create beautiful shining moments that give us all so much joy and help reinforce our appreciation of the world around us and our place and purpose in it.

The architecture that supports all those artists and all that joy—company, school, repertory, theater—has remained relatively stable for a long time. Until this past year, it might have remained untouched for even longer. But the forced isolation, the closing of theaters, the perspective that ballet itself has not been equally welcoming to all comers, has led all of us at OBT to examine how we share what we love with all of you, and how we might make it even easier for you all to love OBT. That’s why Act II of this reimagined season—OBT MOVES—is centered on dialogue and the generation of new ideas to help us soar even higher than we have before. Act II includes the new performance series OBT RAW—in which you will hear even more from the dancers who are our stand-ins and real-world avatars, OBT2 RAW – a chance to catch the next generation of artists hoping to fill our hearts, a new dance by Gioconda Barbuto created for the screen, and the launch of OBT’s (R)Evolve panel discussion series. Each one of these components is an important part of OBT’s commitment to all of you to create the kind of experiences you crave, to invest in the future of ballet, and to play a role in creating a community we are proud to call home.

At the end of a performance, when the curtain comes down—whether an actual or a digital curtain—we hope you will have been entertained, perhaps impressed, but most definitely engaged in the sense that, for those brief shining moments we share, you have been lifted up by the precious but temporary gift that is ballet.

LETTER FROM THE BOARD CHAIR Dear OBT Friends, On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I would like to welcome you to Act II of Oregon Ballet Theatre’s reimagined 20/21 season. While we are all absolutely aching to get back into theaters one day soon, in the meantime OBT is thrilled to bring our community a series of opportunities to connect with dance in a number of innovative and exciting ways.

In Act II we are literally bringing the ballet off the stage and directly to you via dynamic dance discussions, live digital performances, innovative videos and even outside onto Portland’s city sidewalks. In March, OBT is launching (R)Evolve, a series of curated dance discussions hosted by artistic staff with guest panelists to examine, dig deeper, and ask questions regarding ballet’s influences, traditions, and desired evolutions. Later in the spring, OBT RAW will bring live dance performance from OBT’s nationally acclaimed ballet company streamed directly to you via OBTV. In addition, our junior company, OBT2, will be taking dance outdoors to the streets of Portland, re-energizing our city with unexpected pop-up performances. At the end of April they will be presenting OBT2 RAW featuring new work from eight choreographers including OBT Founding Artistic Director James Canfield.

Accompanying the fulsome artistic program, OBT School continues to teach over 200 students virtually and has created captivating digital content for our students and families. OBT’s Community Engagement department is connecting with underserved students to ensure that all students have access to dance, despite remote learning.

While we are greatly enthused by the strength and resilience of OBT throughout the pandemic, without traditional ticket sale revenue OBT is reliant on the generosity of our donor base. We want to encourage you to give and to thank you for believing in the necessity of art in the face of adversity. OBT’s donor support has allowed OBT to creatively continue its mission this year and has kept the organization poised to take the stage again next season.

Ballet companies around the world have pivoted to digital presentations to keep the art form alive. The physical separation from audience has been painful and brought to the forefront the

role of audience in the performing arts. The first (R)Evolve event, “The Alchemy of Audience,” explores this historic moment and the impact on dancers who have not only been restricted in their ability to perform, but to even train and rehearse at a level required to maintain their artistry.

And that reflects the society that supported the 6 - obt.org

creation of this art form, and was unquestioned for over 100 years.” While tradition makes ballet unique, it is time to take stock of what aspects of this tradition need fine tuning or even a thorough overhaul. In this segment, OBT explores the physical and racial stereotypes found in traditional fulllength ballets.

OBT (R)EVOLVE PANELISTS GIOCONDA BARBUTO

CHOREOGRAPHER The choreographer and creator of BringingOutsideIn, Gioconda Barbuto is an internationally esteemed Canadian dancer and choreographer. As a long-time member of Les Grands Ballets Canadiens and Nederlands Dans Theater III, Barbuto was quickly recognized as a versatile and magnetic artist, gracing the works of many leading choreographers. Her synergy in studio with Jiří Kylián, in particular, led to two celebrated dance films, Birth Day and Car Men. In 1996, she was nominated for The Kennedy Center Fellowship and received The Banff Centre’s Clifford E. Lee Choreography Award. She has unflaggingly pursued her choreographic calling, creating detailed, dynamic friezes of full-bodied gesture, marked by her innate musicality. Choreographing for many acclaimed dance companies, her oeuvre now counts over 50 works.

In 2015, Barbuto was selected as the McKnight International Choreographer in Minnesota. She also recently obtained one of the choreographic positions for Oregon Ballet Theatre’s Choreography XX competition, creating BringingOutsideIn—named “best in premiere” in Dance Europe magazine.

Barbuto also extends her methods for molding space and energy through her Movement Workshops and is invited to teach at academies worldwide.

PHIL CHAN

AUTHOR

Phil Chan is a cofounder of Final Bow for Yellow-face, and most recently served as the Director of Programming for IVY, connecting young professionals with leading American museums and performing arts institu-

tions. He is a graduate of Carleton College and an alumnus of the Ailey School. As a writer, he served as the Executive Editor for FLATT magazine and contributed to Dance Europe magazine, Dance magazine, Dance Business Weekly, and the Huffington Post.

He was the founding General Manager of the Buck Hill Skytop Music Festival, and was the General Manager for Armitage Gone! Dance and Youth America Grand Prix. He served multiple years on the National Endowment for the Arts dance panel and the Jadin Wong Award panel presented by the Asian American Arts Alliance. He serves on the Leaders of Color steering committee at Americans for the Arts, the International Council for the Parsons.

LEEWEI CHAO

CHOREOGRAPHER

Born in Taipei, Taiwan, LeeWei Chao started his ballet training with Ms. Xiao Lee, who brought the Vaganoca ballet method from Russia to Taiwan. In 1996, Mr. Chao joined Joffrey Ballet AS A Concert Dancer in New York City, followed by a dancing carrier with Joffrey Ballet Chicago and Milwaukee Ballet Company. Mr. Chao has taught at Alonzo King LINES Ballet, LINES Ballet BFA Program, Stanford University, ODC Dance San Francisco, and Smuin Ballet Company, among others. Mr. Chao was featured in the August 2018 issue of Dance Teacher Magazine. He is currently a faculty member with Oregon Ballet Theatre and NW Dance Project since 2018.

BA in Dance from Mills College and an MA in Contemplative Education from Naropa University. She began her training in ballet in Astoria, Oregon and later in Portland. She was a member of San Francisco based Margaret Jenkins Dance Company, and founded her own company Henry Harris Green. While still a performing artist, Kasandra began her career as a teaching artist in 1972, teaching modern dance and ballet in studios and colleges in California and Oregon.

She worked as an NEA funded Artist in Schools in the Midwest. She shares creative movement processes with people of all ages, especially children whose lives have been infused with social and emotional challenges. Her work can occur in private and public K-12 schools, community centers, hospitals, groups homes and childcare centers­ —believing everyone should have the opportunity to dance. A specialist in teaching struggling youth, she received a 2007 and 2009 Young Audiences Sunburst Award for commitment to arts education. She has served on community leadership committees to further best practices and equity in arts education, helping to bring the Regional Arts and Culture Council’s Right Brain Initiative into being, serving on Portland’s Any Given Child committee in connection with The John F. Kennedy Center for the Arts, serving on Oregon Arts Commission panels, and was a founding board member of the Oregon Dance Education Organization, an affiliate of the National Dance Education Organization, receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2019.

Kasandra served as OBT’s Director of Education Outreach (now titled Education and Community Engagement) for 14 of her 28 years with OBT. She retired in June, 2020.

the summer program at the School of American Ballet in 2004 and enrolled as a full time student that fall. She joined New York City Ballet as an apprentice in June of 2006 and became a member of the corps de ballet of the Company in February of 2007. In October 2009, Kathryn was promoted to soloist. She left the company due to an autoimmune illness in 2012. She has since regained her health and currently performs, teaches, and speaks around the country, runs a highly successful YouTube channel, her podcast The Kathryn Morgan Show, writes a column for Dance Spirit Magazine, is the creator of the the Kathryn Morgan Scholarship, Kathryn Morgan Collection and Kathryn Morgan Haul, and is a judge and master teacher for the Youth America Grand Prix Ballet Competition. She joined Miami City Ballet as a soloist for the 2019/2020 season. She is the recipient of the 2006 Mae L. Wien Award, 2006 Movado Future Legends Award, and the 2009 Janice Levin Award.

Emily Parker is originally from Boston, Massachusetts, where she has recently returned after six seasons with Oregon Ballet Theatre. She is now pursuing a career in medicine and research, and is working on an inpatient clinical research ward studying the circadian rhythm at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

Her favorite OBT performances and roles include William Forsythe’s In the Middle, Somewhat Elevated, Nicolo Fonte’s Left Unsaid, ‘Purple Girl’ in Nacho Duato’s Jardí Tancat, Jiří Kylián’s Falling Angels, and ‘Dew Drop’ in George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker®. Emily continues to dance alongside her new pursuits and is thrilled to participate in OBT’s (R)Evolve series.

George Balanchine choreographed The Four Temperaments for the opening program of Ballet Society, the forerunner of New York City Ballet. It is one of his earliest experimental works, fusing classical steps with a lean and angular style. The ballet was inspired by the medieval belief that human beings are made up of four different humors and that the dominance of one over the others determines a person’s temperament. ​The work includes three themes and four variations that correspond to these basic human moods: choleric, quick to anger; melancholic, gloomy and dejected; phlegmatic, slow moving and apathetic; and excerpted in this program, sanguinic, bright and happy.

The Four Temperaments was recognized immediately as a work without precedent in choreographic history. It is Balanchine’s first—and phenomenally powerful—announcement of the spare, dislocated classicism that he would employ throughout his career in works such as Agon, Episodes, and Stravinsky Violin Concerto and that would have such a profound influence on the emerging American style. Oregon Ballet Theatre first presented The Four Temperaments in 2006.

It was staged by Francia Russell and featured many beloved OBT superstars including Alison Roper, Gavin Larsen, Artur Sultanov, and Brian Simcoe. Sanguinic was performed by the breathtaking Yuka Iino and Jon Drake.

Agon is notoriously difficult musically for the dancers­—and after including the female solo from the second pas de trois, in

Wish List, we thought showing two sections from the equally bracing first pas de trois was only fair. Of note to keen-eyed observers, many sections of Agon are based on 17th Century French Court dances—here the Sarabande and the Gailliard.

THE VERTIGINOUS THRILL OF EXACTITUDE Excerpt CHOREOGRAPHER: WILLIAM FORSYTHE MUSIC: SYMPHONY NO. 9, FOURTH MOVEMENT COMPOSER: FRANZ SCHUBERT PREMIERE: JANUARY 20, 1996, BALLET FRANKFURT OBT PREMIERE: OCTOBER 13, 2007 STAGED BY: JODIE GATES/ LISA KIPP BALLET MASTER Set to the fast paced final movement of Franz Schubert’s Symphony No. 9, The Vertiginous Thrill of Exactitude melds traditional elements of classical dance—tutus, point shoes, and crystalline technique—with dazzling speed and virtuosity.

“Vertiginous” was intended as an affectionate homage to both Petipa and Balanchine in its courtly partnering conventions, compositional structure (solo variations set amongst pas de deux, pas de trois, and ensemble sections), and speedy, precise allegro work. At the same time, the ballet is utterly contemporary from its overt celebration of the dancers’ techni-

cal ability to its self-aware embodiment of dance tradition imparted by the green, flying saucer tutus for the women.

Though the ballet has no story or plot, the title gives a clue to the mood of its creator. Vertiginous can mean dizzying or whirling, but it can also refer to something that undergoes constant change. Overlaid with “exactitude”, Forsythe presents the idea that clean precise execution of the steps can lead to thrilling and dizzying results. The OBT dancers were thrilled to have the opportunity to be coached directly by Mr. Forsythe (via zoom) for the OBT RAW performances.

Napoli was ballet master August Bournonville’s ultimate triumph and won him the status of “Danish ballet poet,” as Hans Christian Andersen called him in a letter following the premiere performance on March 29, 1842. Since then, Napoli has been danced in an unbroken tradition for 150 years and has come to represent the essence of August Bournonville’s creativity, both in steps and ideas.

The ballet was choreographed after Bournonville visited Naples where he had been impressed by the local color and the vibrancy of life on the harbor of Santa Lucia. It appeared to be a city in constant movement. The first and third acts of Napoli were inspired by these Italian street scenes Bournonville wrote in his memoirs: “From my window, in the course of an hour, I would witness more tableaux than I could use in ten ballets!”

In 1836 August Bournonville created and starred in his own version for the Royal Danish Ballet.

Bournonville’s version became the cornerstone of the romantic ballet tradition and remains one of his most celebrated works.

In this program we present the pas de deux from Act II of the ballet which opens with a beautiful pantomime in which the Sylph explains to James that the forest is hers and she will share it him but that he must never touch her otherwise she will die. They begin to dance as they profess their love each other

and are swept away by their passion. James tries to touch the Sylph but she manages to evade him. Their pas de deux is a beautiful balance between his powerful leaps and her ethereal delicacy.

This beautiful and energetic duet is added to the OBT repertory for the first time in celebration of Principal Dancer Xuan Cheng’s 20th anniversary as a ballet dancer. Stagers Frank Andersen and Eva Kloborg have generously donated their expertise in appreciation of Xuan’s wonderful achievments.

SWAN LAKE The Neapolitan Dance CHOREOGRAPHER: KEVIN IRVING, AFTER PETIPA MUSIC: PYOTR ILYICH TCHAIKOVSKY, SWAN LAKE OP. 20 PREMIERE: OREGON BALLET THEATRE, FEBRUARY 18, 2017 KELLER AUDITORIUM, PORTLAND, OR LIBRETTO: KEVIN IRVING STAGED BY: LISA KIPP In this program we present an excerpt from Act II of the ballet. It’s the night of the grand ball given in honor of Prince Siegfried’s birthday during which he must choose a bride.

Hopeful young ladies arrive from far and wide. In the anteroom, delegates from foreign courts jockey for the best positions. In this comical scene the Neapolitans vie for the Prince’s

attention—but no one can captivate the prince who has spent his life charming everyone else.

Out of academic ballet steps, character and motivation gain momentum as the dancers get swept away in some of the most entertaining music Tchaikovsky created for this iconic ballet.

Marius Petipa was 80 when he created Raymonda, one of his last major ballets. The work is set in the twelfth century and steeped in medieval legend.

The role of Raymonda is one of the most demanding in the classical ballet repertoire. The ballerina performs no less than five variations each revealing different ides of her character.

For OBT RAW we have selected the brilliant—and technically

daunting—variation from Act III to highlight the distinct qualities of our newest principal dancer, Eva Burton. This variation demands assurance, delicacy, and aplomb—all characteristics we know that Eva possesses in abundance! And to top it off, we were thrilled to call on the talents of OBT School Faculty member Natalia Bar to coach this role she knows so well.

My reaction—this personal solo—was a declaration of freedom.

Freedom from the stereotypes of gay/straight, masculine/

feminine, freedom as well from rules pertaining to dance as I understood it. Looking at it now, at a distance measured in decades, I see a clear message of strength through self-affirmation that I hope continues to resonate with the audience.”

The words of the songs are from poet Mathilde Wesendonck, who was also the wife of one of Wagner’s patrons. Wagner and Mathilde were said to have engaged in a very intense, albeit hopeless affair which was broken off. The love affair contributed not only to this song cycle but also to the concept for Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde.

conflict directly, the images and atmosphere created convey, without doubt, an evocative emotion. The overall impression of Raptus is of an overwhelming dream, with uncontrolled passions leading to destruction, to disunion. It is a ballet endowed with enormous intensity, in terms of movement, emotion and staging. This short duet is the culminating moment of the ballet, where the two protagonists challenge us to decipher—who is the dreamer, and who is the dream?

STAGER AND COACH Frank Andersen became Artistic Director of the Royal Danish Ballet in 1985. His first term ended in 1994 when he took over as Artistic Director of the Royal Swedish Ballet until 1999. He then resumed his post at the Royal Danish Ballet from 2002 until 2008.

In 2002, Andersen was among five artists to receive the Dance Magazine Award in recognition of outstanding contribution to the field of dance. In 2004, American-Scandinavian Foundation made Andersen “man of the Year” in the US. In 2008, Andersen was awarded Commander of the Danish Dannebrog Order.

Born in Copenhagen, Denmark, Frank Andersen began training at the Royal Danish Ballet School at the age of seven. He also studied under Vera Volkova, Stanley Williams, and Nora Kiss. He was accepted to the corps of Royal Danish Ballet in 1971 and became a principal in 1977. His dancing has been described as conveying a love of life, humor, and charm in roles such as Geert in The Kermesse in Bruges, Gurn in La Sylphide, Franz in Coppélia, and Puck in John Neumeier’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

In 1976 Andersen and Royal Danish Ballet principal Dinna Bjorn founded the Bournonville Group. Known in the U.S. as “Soloists of the Royal Danish Ballet,” this ensemble of 8–10 dancers toured the world for ten years as ambassadors of Bournonville’s work.

They performed in the US, Canada, Central America, France, Italy, Sweden, Holland, Hong Kong, The Philippines, and Thailand.

Andersen has staged more than 30 productions of August Bournonvilles ballets for many internationally recog-

nized companies including: A Folktale for the Royal Danish Ballet in 1991— with set and costumes by her Majesty Queen Margrethe II, La Sylphide for the National Ballet of China in 1999, and Napoli Act III for the National Ballet of Cuba in 2008. In 2010, Andersen, together with his wife Eva Kloborg, staged Bournonvilles Conservatory and Flower Festival in Genzano for the Vietnam National Opera and Ballet, and this culminated in major presentations at the Hanoi Opera House in May 2010.

Since 1997 he has been Artistic Advisor to the National Ballet of China, visiting the People’s Republic on many occasions. In 2014 he published the first book in Chinese about the Royal Danish Ballet and August Bournonville. In 2013 he became the first Dane to be a Professor with the Beijing Dance Academy.

Andersen is thrilled to share his passion for August Bournonville’s choreography with Portland audiences in this Oregon Ballet Theatre premiere production of Napoli Act III.

GEORGE BALANCHINE

CHOREOGRAPHER Ge org e B a la nc h i n e trans­formed the world of ballet. He is widely regarded as the most influential choreogra­ pher of the 20th Century, and he co-founded two of ballet’s most important institutions: New York City Ballet and the School of American Ballet. Balanchine was born in St. Petersburg, Russia, in 1904, studied at the Imperial Ballet School in St. Petersburg, and danced with the Maryinsky Theatre Ballet Company, where he began choreographing short works. In the summer of 1924, Bal­ anchine left the newly formed Soviet Union for Europe, where he was invited by impres­ sario Serge Diaghilev to join the Ballets Russes.

For that company, Balanchine cho­

reographed his first important ballets: Apollo (1928) and Prodigal Son (1933).

After Ballets Russes was dissolved following Diaghilev’s death in 1929, Balanchine spent his next few years on a variety of projects in Europe and then formed is own company, Les Ballets 1933, in Paris. There, he met American arts connoisseur Lincoln Kirstein, who persuaded him to come to the United States. In 1934, the pair founded the School of American Ballet, which remains in opera­tion to this day, training students for com­ panies around the world. Balanchine’s first ballet in the U.S., Serenade, set to music by Tchaikovsky, was created for SAB students and premiered on June 9, 1934, on the grounds of an estate in White Plains. Bal­anchine and Kirstein founded several short-lived ballet companies before forming Ballet Society in 1946, which was renamed New York City Ballet in 1948. Balanchine served as the Company’s ballet master from that year until his death in 1983, building it into one of the most important performing arts institutions in the world, and a cornerstone of the cultural life of New York City. STAGER AND COACH Natalia Bar was born in Odessa, Ukraine. She was trained in the classical tradition of Odessa State Choreographic Academy and continued her studies with legendary teachers Julius Placht, Elena Tchernishova, and Marina Shamsheva. Ms. Bar went on to dance professionally with the Odessa Ballet Company for 15 years. During her career she worked with world renowned choreographers Leonid Lavrovsky, Oleg Vinogradov, Igor Tchernishov, and Nina Fedorova. As a soloist with the company she performed leading roles in classical ACT II - 15

OBT RAW GUESTS and contemporary ballets and toured internationally.

Since she moved to the U.S., Ms. Bar has established a reputation as a well-known teacher, choreographer and coach in both traditional Vaganova and contemporary American styles.

Ms. Bar was on the faculty of the Rock School of the Pennsylvania Ballet in Philadelphia for 15 years, both as a teacher and as the official International Competition Coach. While at the Rock School, Ms. Bar coached the winners of international competitions in Moscow, Jackson, Greece, Paris, and the Youth America GrandPrix in New York City.

In 2008 Ms. Bar was honored with the Outstanding Teacher Award by Youth American Grand Prix. Many of Ms. Bar’s students are professionally employed by major dance companies including New York City Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, Royal Danish Ballet, Joffrey Ballet, and Alvin Ailey. Ms. Bar was featured in the MTV series “Made” and in the feature film NY Export: Opus Jazz, which aired on PBS and stars New York City Ballet dancers. Ms. Bar’s daughter, Ellen Bar, enjoyed a 13 year career as a soloist with New York City Ballet.

AUGUST BOURNONVILLE

CHOREOGRAPHER

August Bournonville was born in Copenhagen, Denmark, on August 21, 1805. A dancer, choreographer, ballet director, and teacher who directed The Royal Danish Ballet for nearly 50 years, he established the Danish style of dance based on bravura dancing and expressive mime. His distinctive style is noted for its precision, neatness, lightness, and gaiety. It is filled with bouncy jumps, speedy footwork, small quick steps, and beats done while the upper body is held still. He was trained by Vin16 - obt.org

cenzo Galeotti, the Italian dancer and choreographer who became the founder of The Royal Danish Ballet, as well as by his father, French dancer Antoine Bournonville, who arrived in Copenhagen from Stockholm in 1792.

Bournonville became a solo dancer at an early age at the Royal Ballet in Copenhagen. He created a style, although influenced from the Paris ballet, entirely his own in which elegance and grace dominated. As a choreographer, he made original ballets with varied settings: Denmark, Italy, Scotland, Russia, and South America. In Le Conservatoire, Bournonville dramatized memories of his years of study in Paris; key themes were harmony and grace. In his ballets, harmony of the dance reflects harmony of the soul: Ballet steps are infused with joyful exuberance.

Among his ballets still performed, three are treasures of the Danish ballet repertoire. Napoli, La Sylphide, and A Folk Tale represent the essence of Bournonville’s artistic outlook. In these ballets, he maintained that art should be positive—with the purpose to elevate us and make us harmonious human beings. The ballets are dedicated to a world of order, meaning, and beauty – in which balance prevails. Bournonville also directed the Royal Swedish Opera (1861-1864), and staged several of his works in Vienna (1855-1856). In 1877, following his return to Denmark, he retired and was knighted. He was a central figure in Danish culture, who fought to improve the social status and security of his dancers. He died on November 30, 1879, in Copenhagen.

rice Béjart’s Mudra School in Brussels, and completed his education at New York’s Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in New York. His professional career began in 1980 with Cullberg Ballet in Stockholm, but it was at the Nederland Dans Theater, directed by Jirí Kylián, where he first came to prominence. He composed his first choreography there, Jardí tancat (1983), with music by María del Mar Bonet, and won first prize at the International Choreographic Workshop Cologne. His ballets and choreography are now part of the repertoires of the most prestigious international companies.

He was artistic director of the Spanish National Lyrical Theatre Ballet in Madrid, today the National Dance Company (1990-2010). In 1999, he founded the National Dance Company 2, with the aim of training and preparing dancers for their professional life. He currently directs the Mikhaylovsky Theatre Ballet in Saint Petersburg. In recognition of his achievements as a dancer, he received the 1987 VSCD Gouden Dansprijs (Golden Dance Award).

WILLIAM FORSYTHE

CHOREOGRAPHER

William Forsythe has been active in the field of choreography for over 45 years. His work is acknowledged for reorienting the practice of ballet from its identification with classical repertoire to a dynamic 21st century art form. Forsythe’s deep interest in the fundamental NACHO DUATO principles of organization has led him CHOREOGRAPHER to produce a wide range of projects Choreographer including Installations, Films, and Web for Jardí Tancat, based knowledge creation.

Nacho Duato was Raised in New York and initially born in Valencia, trained in Florida with Nolan Dingman Spain, and studied and Christa Long, Forsythe danced at London’s Ram- with the Joffrey Ballet and later the bert School, Mau- Stuttgart Ballet, where he was

OBT RAW GUESTS appointed Resident Choreographer in 1976. In 1984, he began a 20-year tenure as director of the Ballet Frankfurt. After its closure, Forsythe established a new ensemble, The Forsythe Company, which he directed from 2005 to 2015. Forsythe’s most recent works were developed and performed exclusively by The Forsythe Company, while his earlier pieces are prominently featured in the repertoire of virtually every major ballet company in the world, including The Mariinsky Ballet, The New York City Ballet and The Paris Opera Ballet. Further to his work as a choreographer, William Forsythe is a current Professor of Dance and Artistic Advisor for the Choreographic Institute.

STAGER

Jodie Gates has established a significant dance career, contributing to the profession as a visionary leader, artistic director, educator, choreographer, stager and principal dancer. She is an experienced founder of programs and organizations, and serves as a facilitator for artistic collaborations and educational initiatives. Her professional performing career spanned 25 years, dancing as a principal ballerina with the Joffrey Ballet, Frankfurt Ballet, Pennsylvania Ballet, Complexions, and as an international guest artist. Since 2004, Ms. Gates has choreographed over 70 original dance works for stage and screen. Her commissioned choreography has been performed at the Kennedy Center, American Ballet Theater, New York’s City Center Theater, Staatsballett Berlin, the Helsinki International Ballet Competition, the Vail International Dance Festival among others. She has choreographed for television commercials, and companies including Ballet West, Cincinnati Ballet, Colorado Ballet,

Complexions, Kansas City Ballet, BalletX, Washington Ballet, and Tulsa Ballet. She is also responsible for staging William Forsythe’s ballets worldwide, including productions at Paris Opera Ballet, San Francisco Ballet, Prague National Theater, Zurich Opera Ballet and Teatro La Scala, among others. Her honors include the American Ballet Theater/Altria Choreography Fellow, a recipient of Jerome Robbins ‘New Essential Works Program’ and honored by the American Association of University Women. Ms. Gates currently resides in Southern California, and is the Artistic Director for the award-wining Laguna Dance Festival, and is the Founding Director of the Glorya Kaufman School of Dance at the University of Southern California, where she developed and established a new movement model for dance education.

FRANCIA RUSSELL

Francia Russell was Artistic Director of Pacific Northwest Ballet and Director of Pacific Northwest Ballet School from 1977 until her retirement in June 2005. She is responsible for the addition to the Company’s repertory of many works of George Balanchine. In addition to teaching, rehearsing, and promoting the potential of Company dancers, Ms. Russell enriched the curriculum of PNB School by adding related subjects of study and engaging a team of expert consultants. She also oversaw the development of an extensive community education program and founded the DanceChance program in 1994. These components of the School were distinguished as ahead of their time in American dance education.

Ms. Russell’s most influential teachers were Felia Doubrovska, Antonina Tumkovsky, Vera Volkova, Robert Joffrey, and George Balanchine. She

joined New York City Ballet in 1956 and was promoted to soloist in 1959.

She retired from the company in 1961, danced for a year with Jerome Robbins’ Ballets USA, and taught on the faculty of the School of American Ballet in 1962-1963. In 1964, Balanchine appointed her ballet mistress of NYCB. Ms. Russell was one of the first ballet masters chosen by Balanchine to stage his works. To date, she has staged 246 productions of Balanchine ballets worldwide. In 1987, she staged the first Balanchine ballet in the People’s Republic of China for the Shanghai Ballet, and in 1988-1989, she staged the historic first authorized performance of Balanchine’s work in his homeland for the Kirov Ballet in St. Petersburg. From 1975 to 1977, Ms. Russell and Kent Stowell were Co-Artistic Directors of Frankfurt Ballet.

Ms. Russell’s numerous awards include the Washington State Governor’s Arts Award, the Dance Magazine Award, an Honorary Doctor of Arts from the University of Washington, an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from Seattle University, and the Brava Award from Women’s University Club of Seattle. In 2004, Ms. Russell received the Arts Fund Lifetime Achievement in the Arts Award, the Seattle Mayor’s Arts Award for Lifetime Achievement, and the Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award and was recognized by the King County Council for her achievements in the arts.

ARTISTIC STAFF KEVIN IRVING

THE CRUMPACKER FAMILY ARTISTIC DIRECTOR A rare dancer whose career spanned multiple disciplines, Kevin Irving began dancing with jazz classes in his hometown dance school (Long Island, New York), before joining the school and training ensemble of Alvin Ailey — an experience that impacted him deeply. From 1982–1985, he danced with The Elisa Monte Dance Company of New York, a company often referred to as “postmodern,” but at 24, he took a sharp turn toward classical dance and joined Les Grands Ballets Canadiens in Montréal.

Promoted to soloist and subsequently to principal dancer, Irving became a well-known figure wherever LGBC performed, excelling in classical, neoclassical, and contemporary roles — including in ballets by diverse choreographers such as George Balanchine, Antony Tudor, Kurt Joos, Nacho Duato and in works created by LGBC’s resident choreographer James Kudelka. In 1993, Irving joined Twyla Tharp Dance, touring the U.S. and Europe with the acclaimed choreographer, including performances at L’Opéra de Paris and the PBS filming of Tharp’s much-lauded ballet In the Upper Room.

From 1994–2002, Irving was ballet master and associate director with Nacho Duato’s Compañía Nacional de Danza in Madrid, at a time when the Spanish company was in high demand all around the world. From 2002–2007, he was artistic director of The Göteborg Ballet, the 2nd-largest professional dance ensemble in Sweden. The company, rejuvenated during Irving’s tenure, was named the most important dance company in Sweden in Ballet International’s 2007 critic poll.

From 2007–2013, Irving was a frequent guest ballet master with The Royal Danish Ballet where he staged and rehearsed works by Jiří Kylián, George Balanchine, and Jerome Robbins. He has also been a guest teacher with numerous companies and schools in the U.S. and abroad for over 20 years. Additionally, he has staged ballets by Nacho Duato and Nicolo Fonte for companies such as The Royal Ballet Covent Garden, Nederlands Dans Theater, Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, Lyon Opera Ballet, and The Australian Ballet, to name just a few.

In the U.S., Irving became associate director at Morphoses (formerly The Wheeldon Company) from 2011–2012, coordinating special initiatives aimed at defining the company’s unique profile in the dance world. From 2010–2016, he ran I-DANCE (Inspiring Dance: American Nations’ Choreographic Exchange), a nonprofit that sent teachers and choreographers to dance communities in Central and South America. Irving was named artistic director of Oregon Ballet Theatre in July 2013 and is proud to call Portland (and OBT) home since that time.

NICOLO FONTE

RESIDENT CHOREOGRAPHER

Choreographer Nicolo Fonte is known for his daring and original approach to dance. His work has been noted by critics for a unique movement language as well as a highly developed fusion of ideas, dance and design. He has created over 50 new works for dance companies spanning the globe, garnering praise and generating excitement

for his daring and theatrical approach to dance. The Australian Ballet, Pennsylvania Ballet, and The Dutch National Ballet, among many others, all have works of his in their repertoire. Whether made to Ravel’s brash Bolero or the quiet intricacy of a Bach violin piece, Fonte ballets have common ground: “The choreography is inventive, creating expressive original shapes built on an undercurrent of implicit human relationships” (Foyer, Dance Europe). “What impresses the most is that his choreography is obviously the result of a personal reflexion—distinctly and unmistakably Fonte, proof of a rare quality” (Michel Odin, Danse).

Well-known to Portland audiences for a stunning roster of works including Never Stop Falling (in Love), Bolero, Giants Before Us, and Rhapsody in Blue, Fonte is recognized throughout the world as a choreographer equally comfortable with classical and contemporary dance forms. Nicolo Fonte is currently the Resident Choreographer for Ballet West, in Salt Lake City, which began with the 2012–2013 season. He became Resident Choreographer at Oregon Ballet Theatre beginning with the 2016–2017 season.

LISA KIPP

REHEARSAL DIRECTOR

Lisa Kipp began studying ballet in Olympia, Washington, and finished her training at Pacific Northwest Ballet School. She danced with Pacific Northwest Ballet, Pacific Ballet Theatre, Ballet Oregon, City Ballet of Los Angeles, and James Sewell Ballet, as well as performed in the touring company of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera.

Kipp danced principal roles in George Balanchine’s Rubies, Tchaikovsky Pas de Deux , Square Dance, Concerto

ARTISTIC STAFF Barocco, and Apollo, and appeared as the Cowgirl in Agnes de Mille’s Rodeo.

Prior to joining Oregon Ballet Theatre in 2004, she was ballet headmaster for The School of Spectrum Dance Theater in Seattle, as well as the company’s rehearsal director. Kipp has been ballet master for OBT for over 10 years and rehearsal director for over five years. As ballet master, she has assisted James Kudelka, Lar Lubovitch, Lola de Ávila, Nicolo Fonte, Francia Russell, Bart Cook, Christine Redpath, and Helgi Tómasson. She staged George Balanchine’s Rubies, Square Dance, and Who Cares? for the company and is responsible for the corps de ballet in its classical repertoire.

RESIDENT LIGHTING DESIGNER Michael Mazzola’s critically acclaimed lighting and scenery have been seen in venues throughout the U.S., Europe, and Asia, from opera houses to amphitheaters and circus tents to hay barns. The three-time New York Dance and Performance Award winner has designed lighting and scenery for Oregon Ballet Theatre, Pacific Northwest Ballet, San Francisco Ballet, Whim W’Him, Queensland Ballet, the Finnish National Ballet, Stuttgart Ballet, Grand Rapids Ballet, Ballet West, Ballet Nacional de Cuba, Ballet Hispánico, Trey McIntyre Project, The Washington Ballet, Royal Winnipeg Ballet, Houston Ballet, Rachel Tess Dance at the Wanås Foundation in Sweden, Baryshnikov Arts Center, LMCC’s River To River Festival, Third Rail Repertory Theatre, Bebe Miller Company, and Liz Lerman’s Dance Exchange.

by James Kudelka at Royal Winnipeg Ballet. He then traveled to Chicago for a new Giselle by The Joffrey Ballet, among others. Mazzola has been the scenic designer for Comedy Central Roasts and the 2015 Lincoln Awards at the Kennedy Center Concert Hall for upLIGHT.

Jeffrey Stanton is from Santa Cruz, California.

He trained at San Francisco Ballet School and the School of American Ballet. In addition to classical ballet, he studied ballroom, jazz, and tap dance. He joined San Francisco Ballet in 1989, before joining Pacific Northwest Ballet in 1994. He was promoted to soloist in 1995, promoted to principal in 1996, and retired from PNB in 2011. He has performed principal roles in various Balanchine works such as Apollo, Theme and Variations, Who Cares, and Agon. He also performed principal roles in classics such as The Sleeping Beauty, Swan Lake, Merry Widow, and Romeo and Juliet. COMPANY PRINCIPAL DANCERS EVA BURTON was born in Los Angeles, California, where she received training from Patrick Frantz, followed by San Francisco Ballet School. In 2010, she joined OBT as a dancer in the corps de ballet, was promoted to soloist in 2016 and became principal in the beginning of the 2020–2021 season. Her repertoire includes works by George Balanchine, William Forsythe, Trey McIntyre, Nicolo Fonte, James Kudelka, Nacho Duato, Helen Pickett, Yuri Possokhov, August Bournonville, and Jiří Kylián. In 2015 and 2019, she performed the title role in Ben Stevenson’s Cinderella. In February of 2020, she made her debut as Princess Aurora in Christopher Stowell’s production of The Sleeping Beauty.

She attended Guangzhou Ballet School, joined the corps de ballet for Guangzhou Ballet of China (under prima ballerina Dan Dan Zhang), and rose to principal. In 2004, she was a silver medalist in the third Shanghai International Ballet Competition; in 2005, a finalist in the eighth New York International Ballet Competition; and in 2006, a gold medalist in China’s Tao Li Bei World Dance Competition. Upon Édouard Lock’s invitation, she joined La La La Human Steps and performed in 20 countries across three continents: Europe, Asia, and North America. She joined Les Grands Ballet Canadiens, and became an OBT principal in 2011. Xuan has danced leading and original roles in world class choreogra-

phers’ repertories, including William Forsythe, Nacho Duato, Jiří Kylián, and Nicolo Fonte. As principal at OBT, some of her standout roles include: Princess Aurora, Cinderella, Juliet, Giselle, Alice, Sugarplum Fairy in George Balanchine’s Nutcracker®, Odette/Odile in both Christopher Stowell’s and Kevin Irving’s Swan Lake and as Teresina in August Bournonville’s Napoli.

PETER FRANC is from Lancaster, Pennsylvania. He trained with Metropolitan Ballet Theatre and Houston Ballet Academy, where he received the Michael Wasmund Award upon graduation. He then joined Houston Ballet for eight years and rose to the rank of demi-soloist. He later moved to Aspen Santa Fe Ballet (2012) before joining OBT as a

COMPANY soloist (2015). OBT promoted him to principal in 2016. He regards his role in Jerome Robbins’ Afternoon of a Faun as a favorite, as well as Romeo in James Canfield’s Romeo & Juliet and Prince Siegfried in Kevin Irving’s Swan Lake. Other favorites include features in works by Jiří Kylián, Hans Van Manen, Stanton Welch, Christopher Bruce, Nicolo Fonte, Cayetano Soto, and Alejandro Cerrudo.

BRIAN SIMCOE is from Grants Pass, Oregon, where he trained with Penny King and Sylvia Bolton. From there he went on to train with Long Beach Ballet, Pacific Northwest Ballet School, and the School of Oregon Ballet Theatre. Initially an apprentice with OBT in 2004, he rose through the ranks and was promoted to soloist in 2011 and to principal in 2013. While he has performed a wide variety of work throughout his career by choreographers such as George Balanchine, James Kudelka, Nacho Duato, Christopher Wheeldon, and William Forsythe, some of his favorite featured roles include Jerome Robbins’ Afternoon of a Faun, Nicolo Fonte’s Petrouchka, Yuri Possokhov’s La Valse, and Romeo in James Canfield’s Romeo and Juliet.

San Francisco Ballet School, she joined OBT’s Professional Division (2011), became an apprentice (2013), and was promoted to company artist (2016). Her favorite OBT performances and roles include William Forsythe’s In the Middle, Somewhat Elevated, George Balanchine’s Stravinsky Violin Concerto, Nicolo Fonte’s Left Unsaid, Trey McIntyre’s Robust American Love, ‘Purple Girl’ in Nacho Duato’s Jardí Tancat, ‘Dew Drop’ in George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker®, and ‘Princess Florine’ in Christopher Stowell’s The Sleeping Beauty. Lind was promoted to soloist in 2019.

MICHAEL LINSMEIER — raised on a family dairy farm — is from Cato, Wisconsin. He trained at Jean Wolfmeyer School of Dance and at Virginia School of the Arts under Petrus Bosman. He joined Milwaukee Ballet before joining OBT’s corps de ballet (2011) and was later promoted to soloist (2013).

His favorite roles are Stepsister in Ben Stevenson’s Cinderella, Mercutio in James Canfield’s Romeo & Juliet, Nacho Duato’s Jardí Tancat, Darrell Grand Moultrie’s Fluidity Of Steel, and Helen Pickett’s Terra.

COMPANY DANCERS

SOLOISTS THOMAS BAKER is from San Jose, California. He began training at the age of 15 at Westside Studio of Performing Arts under Bené Arnold and attended San Francisco Ballet School on full scholarship.

While he joined OBT as an apprentice in 2010 and returned as a company artist in 2014, he also spent two seasons dancing with Ballet San Jose. He has collaborated with Barak Ballet and National Choreographers Initiative. With OBT, he has performed roles such as the Cavalier in George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker ® and White Rabbit in Webre’s ALICE (in wonderland), as well as principal roles in works by George Balanchine, William Forsythe, Nacho Duato, Nicolo Fonte, and others.

Baker was promoted to company soloist in 2019.

JESSICA LIND is from San Jose, California, where she began training at Dance Theatre International. Following one year at

COCO ALVAREZ-MENA is from Miami, Florida, where she started her training at DanceTown under Manny Castro and Maria Eugenia Lorenzo. She then attended The Harid Conservatory for pre-professional Vaganova training and later attended USC’s Glorya Kaufman School of Dance in 2019 as part of the inaugural class. While at Kaufman, she was fortunate enough to work with William Forsythe, Jodie Gates, Desmond Richardson, and Zippora Karz. Post graduation, she joined Oregon Ballet Theatre as a company artist in 2019.

BRIAN BENNETT is from Lanham, Maryland. He began his dance training in the competition circuit where he performed tap, jazz, hip-hop, and contemporary routines across the United States. He began his ballet training in high school at Baltimore School for the Arts under the direction of Norma Pera. During this time, he was very fortunate to perform in ballets such as

George Balanchine’s Serenade and Balanchine’s Stars and Stripes as well as Martha Graham’s Appalachian Spring. He received scholarships to train at summer programs hosted by San Francisco Ballet School, The Joffrey Ballet School, American Ballet Theatre, and George Mason University. After high school, Bennett attended Butler University in pursuit of a Bachelor of Science in Arts Administration under the direction of Larry Attaway. At Butler he enjoyed dancing in ballets such as Giselle, George Balanchine’s The Four Temperaments, Paul Taylor’s Piazzolla Caldera, Swan Lake, and Gerald Arpino’s Viva Vivaldi. Bennett joined Oregon Ballet Theatre as a Company Artist in 2019.

HANNAH DAVIS is from Chapel Hill, North Carolina, where she began dancing at Chapel Hill Ballet School. She furthered her classical and contemporary studies at University of North Carolina School of the Arts under Brenda Daniels and Susan Jaffe.

Hannah joined OBT2 in 2015, was promoted to apprentice in 2016, and became a company artist in 2018. Her favorite performances with OBT include Choreography XX in the Rose Garden, Winter Fairy in Ben Stevenson’s Cinderella, and Jiří Kylián’s Falling Angels.

MAKINO HAYASHI is from Kumamoto, Japan, where she trained at Kumamoto Ballet School, and where she later received a Hitozukuri Grant. She joined Colorado Ballet as an apprentice (2001) and was promoted to corps de ballet (2004) before joining OBT (2010). Among her favorite roles are Nacho Duato’s Rassemble ent and Jardí Tancat, and Matjash Mrozewski’s The Lost Dance. In addition, she was featured in August Bournonville’s Napoli; Darrell Grand Moultrie’s Instinctual Confidence; William Forsythe’s In the Middle, Somewhat Elevated; and as Helena in Christopher Stowell’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Makino has also been choreographing since 2013, and has created works both here in the US and Japan, including two works created on OBT dancers, Brothers and a Sister, and What do you see… Her work, Black Earth, was accepted and performed at Szólóduó choreographer competition in Budapest Hungary in 2019 ACT II - 23

CHRISTOPHER KAISER is from Los Angeles, California, where he trained at Los Angeles High School for the Arts. Afterward, he was accepted to The Juilliard School, where he graduated with a bachelor of fine arts and danced in the Edinburgh International Festival. He danced with Alberta Ballet for three seasons before joining OBT. This will be his 5th season with OBT. He has enjoyed performing roles such as Nacho Duato’s Gnawa, William Forsythe’s Herman Schmerman, Nicolo Fonte’s Left Unsaid and Giants Before Us, and Ben Stevenson’s Cinderella as a Step Sister.

MATHILDE LAMBERT began training at the Washington School of Ballet, directed

by Kee-Juan Han. Shortly after moving to Paris, she joined the CRR de Paris before training professionally at La Scala Ballet School in Milan, Italy. She then joined the Dutch National Ballet as a trainee. She received a direct entry award to the summer intensive at The Royal Ballet School. At 18, she became an apprentice with Northern Ballet in Leeds, England. She danced in David Nixon’s The Little Mermaid as well as in Kenneth MacMillan’s Concerto, and the title role in Northern Ballet’s Ugly Duckling.

Mathilde continued her career dancing with Columbia Classical Ballet where she performed the roles of Snow White in Mark Diamond’s ballet, the Snow Queen in Radenko Pavlovich’s The Nutcracker, the soloist girl in Rick McCullough’s Triptych Life Chance Gala, and the Second Odalisque in Le corsaire. With the Minnesota Ballet she danced some of her favorite roles including: The Sugar Plum Fairy in Allan Fields’ The Nutcracker, and the role of Tatiana in Bruce Wells’ A Midsummer Night’s Dream. She is excited to start her first season with Oregon Ballet Theatre!

ZUZU METZLER grew up in Camas, Washington. She trained with OBT School, joined OBT2, became an apprentice in 2018 and was promoted to company artist in 2020. She was awarded the Elena Carter Memorial Scholarship and has spent summers at Pacific Northwest Ballet School, San Francisco Ballet School, the 24 - obt.org

School of American Ballet, and Exploring Ballet with Suzanne Farrell. Favorite performances and roles include Nicolo Fonte’s Accidental Signals, Cupid in the Annual School Performance of the Dream Scene from Don Quixote, and both Harlequin and Marzipan in George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker ®. She has also enjoyed dancing Winter Fairy in Ben Stevenson’s Cinderella and Jewels in Christopher Stowell’s Sleeping Beauty.

COLBY PARSONS is from Santa Barbara, California, where he studied at Santa Barbara Ballet Center with Denise Rinaldi. He then trained on full scholarship at American Ballet Theatre, danced with ABT II, and had soloist and principal roles with Alberta Ballet in Calgary. He joined OBT as a company artist in 2014 and has enjoyed the roles of Lover in James Kudelka’s Sub Rosa, lead in August Bournonville’s Napoli, Prince in Ben Stevenson’s Cinderella, and Cavalier in George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker ®. He has also been a guest artist in Japan, Costa Rica, Spain, Italy, Switzerland, and Canada.

BAILEY SHAW is from Raleigh, North Carolina. He began his ballet training at Wake Forest Civic Ballet at the age of 14.

Upon graduating high school, Bailey trained under Patricia McBride and JeanPierre Bonnefoux at Charlotte Ballet Academy (2015). He also studied at Miami City Ballet School. He then spent two seasons dancing in BalletMet’s second company (2017–2019) under the direction of Edwaard Liang. Bailey joined OBT as an apprentice in 2019 and became a company artist for the 2020–2021 season.

Some standout performances he has had the opportunity to dance include Edwaard Liang’s Wunderland, Alonzo King’s Chants, and George Balanchine’s Tchaikovsky Pas DeDeux and Valse Fantaisie.

APPRENTICES KANGMI KIM is from Seoul, South Korea. She received her training with Sunhwa Arts High School. She moved to New York in 2016 and trained on a full scholarship at American Ballet Theatre Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School. She joined OBT2

in 2017 and became an apprentice in 2019. Her favorite roles include: Waltz girl in George Balanchine’s Serenade and Nicolo Fonte’s Accidental Signals.

NIKO YAROSLASKI was born and raised in Morro Bay, California. He began jazz and contemporary classes at age four.

When he was 12, he started taking ballet classes at Ballet Theater Studio in San Luis Obispo and later received instruction from the Academy of Dance in their Professional Training Division. He attended summer intensives on a full scholarship at American Ballet Theater in NYC, Ballet West Academy, Ballet Arizona, Kansas City Ballet, and Pacific Northwest Ballet. He joined Ballet West Academy year-round Professional Training Division in 2016, then was promoted to Trainee in 2017. He then danced as a full scholarship trainee from 2017–2019. As a trainee, he performed in numerous company shows and in academy productions such as Oberon in Scherzo in Midsummer Night’s Dream, and he performed in Viva Vivaldi. Niko joined Oregon Ballet Theatre as an apprentice in 2019.
