LETTER FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
Welcome to OBT LIVE! Our first in-person performances since the curtain came down on The Sleeping Beauty in February of 2020, OBT LIVE is a celebration of our connections to each other – performer to audience as well as OBT to its community. Through our wonderful partnerships with Portland Opera and OMSI, OBT has been able to bring all of us together, safely, to thrill to the unique uplift that is the inevitable result of watching the OBT dancers doing what they love best and what has been, for too long, out of reach due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Many thanks to all of our wonderful sponsors – but especially to Mr. Jordan Schnitzer and The CARE Foundation for recognizing the value of the arts in support of healthy community, and whose generous donation made the stage we perform on possible. Over the course of these many long months of isolation, uncertainty, and anxiety, the artists of OBT have remained steadfastly committed to their art and to the future of ballet in the Portland metro area – which is what makes these performances so very dear to all of us. The exhilaration experienced by the dancers as they reunite with each other, and with the potential of moving through space, and moving audiences with their art is the unmistakable gift they share with us. Also unmistakable is that the performance you will see could only be brought to life by professional ballet dancers and a company like OBT. As Artistic Director, it fills me with enormous pride to witness the daring and pizzazz of every OBT dancer in this program, and to cap this one-of-a-kind year with this one-of-a-kind performance, featuring a major new work by Resident Choreographer Nicolo Fonte and introducing a fresh new choreographic voice to Portland with a commissioned premiere by the very talented Jennifer Archibald. The future of ballet is being developed right before your eyes, right here in the Rose City, with your support! We all have surely grown more aware of the tremendous contributions of the first responders on the front lines of the pandemic. OBT joins in the chorus of appreciation for all of those who have helped our community through the long months of this crisis. Now it is time for the second responders – the artists among us – to help restore and rebuild the fabric of the civic tapestry that binds us together. The arts, especially live performance, generate the current needed for the next phase of our recovery – and the palpable electricity we unleash with OBT LIVE is meant to be just the first jolt for all of you! Please take the energy created with this performance and re-invest it in whatever brings you joy and that will lead to better outcomes for all.
Enjoy!

LETTER FROM THE BOARD CHAIR Dear OBT Friends, After an extraordinary 16 months, it is the Board of Trustees’ greatest pleasure to welcome you back to the world of live in-person dance performance with OBT LIVE. This production is the culmination of OBT’s reimagined season OBT MOVES, and is coming to you from the Jordan Schnitzer CARE SummerStage, a pop up outdoor venue next to Portland Opera, serving both in-person and virtual audiences. To mark this momentous occasion, OBT has put together an uplifting production of two world premiere ballets by OBT’s Resident Choreographer Nicolo Fonte, and internationally renowned choreographer and founder of the Arch Dance Company Jennifer Archibald. These newly commissioned works were thematically inspired by the sheer joy OBT staff and dancers feel in reconnecting with you. This performance is a wonderful example of the united will of the Oregon community to enable our local arts organizations to stay strong throughout the pandemic. Our Summerstage was made possible due to a generous collaboration with our friends at the Portland Opera and OMSI. In addition, OBT is grateful to the Harold & Arlene Schnitzer CARE Foundation, Travel Oregon, and TriMet for supplying the funding to make this in-person outdoor performance possible. Lastly, OBT is continuously inspired by our donors who believe and support OBT’s mission to Share, Inspire and Connect, no matter what the circumstances. Our village is the state of Oregon and organizations and donors within it. It is because of this village that OBT was able to Dance On and Dance Strong through the pandemic and now, to finally reconnect with a live audience. If you haven’t already, we hope you will consider joining us by making a contribution that will help us continue to share the joy of dance in our community. We hope you enjoy reconnecting with us and your friends and family in-person through OBT LIVE. OBT is overjoyed to be reconnecting with you. Thank you, as always, for your support. Best,

OBT LIVE PROGRAM SCULPTEDCLOUDS CHOREOGRAPHER: JENNIFER ARCHIBALD MUSIC: YULUNGA (SPIRIT DANCE) BY BRENDAN PERRY AND LISA GERRARD LYRICS BY LISA GERRARD | PERFORMED BY LISA GERRARD AND DEAD CAN DANCE AWE BY ROGER GOULA OBT WORLD PREMIERE: JUNE 5, 2021 Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh explains: What does a revolution in consciousness look like? How do we look at our earth today? “So to breathe in and be aware of your body and look deeply into it and realize you are the Earth and your consciousness is also the consciousness of the earth. Not to cut the tree, not to pollute the water, that is not enough.“
You can't sculpt clouds . . . there's an air of lightness, and freedom and higher being in our clouds above. Can we learn to not always control, sculpt and take from our environment?
SEASONS Special Appearance by OBT2 CHOREOGRAPHER: LEEWEI CHAO, PETER FRANC MUSIC: ANTONIO VIVALDI OBT2 PREMIERE: JUNE 6, 2021 ‘Seasons’ as danced by members of OBT2 includes five interludes choreographed to music by Vivaldi. ‘SEASONS’—Danced by our second company, OBT2, Seasons is a compilation of interludes that herald the coming of spring,
summer, autumn, and winter. This fresh treatment of Vivaldi music is excerpted from the new full length Four Seasons ballet, choreographed by LeeWei Chao and Peter Franc and curated by Marion Tonner.
CHOROS CHOREOGRAPHER: NICOLO FONTE MUSIC: RAI AND LATENT MANIFEST BY TARIK O’REGAN CHOROS BY LUDOVICO EINAUDI OBT WORLD PREMIERE: JUNE 5, 2021 "Choros” means dance in the Greek language. This word occurs in the names of numerous Greek dances, which may be literally translated as “dance of . . .” or ”dance from . . .”. But “Sometimes you just have to dance” was what I was thinking of when I started to conceive of this new work for this momentous occasion—OBT’s return to live public performances. (It was in fact the working title for the ballet). The simple, most basic fact is that dancers need to perform like birds need to fly. Dance is a special class of performance that combines movement, rhythm and gesture with music, and has the unique quality
of transforming space with the physical body. Whether that space is on a formal stage, the intimacy of your own bathroom or the inner sacred space of your heart, there is no more natural an expression of celebration, than to dance. Dancers need to dance and Choros was made for this moment and for these inspiring dancers to celebrate the occasion with all of you watching. —Nicolo Fonte

ARTISTIC STAFF KEVIN IRVING
THE CRUMPACKER FAMILY ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
A rare dancer whose career spanned multiple disciplines, Kevin Irving began dancing with jazz classes in his hometown dance school (Long Island, New York), before joining the school and training ensemble of Alvin Ailey — an experience that impacted him deeply. From 1982–1985, he danced with The Elisa Monte Dance Company of New York, a company often referred to as “postmodern,” but at 24, he took a sharp turn toward classical dance and joined Les Grands Ballets Canadiens in Montréal. Promoted to soloist and subsequently to principal dancer, Irving became a well-known figure wherever LGBC performed, excelling in classical, neoclassical, and contemporary roles — including in ballets by diverse choreographers such as George Balanchine, Antony Tudor, Kurt Joos, Nacho Duato and in works created by LGBC’s resident choreographer James Kudelka. In 1993, Irving joined Twyla Tharp Dance, touring the U.S. and Europe with the acclaimed choreographer, including performances at L’Opéra de Paris and the PBS filming of Tharp’s much-lauded ballet In the Upper Room. From 1994–2002, Irving was ballet master and associate director with Nacho Duato’s Compañía Nacional de Danza in Madrid, at a time when the Spanish company was in high demand all around the world. From 2002–2007, he was artistic director of The Göteborg Ballet, the 2nd-largest professional dance ensemble in Sweden. The company, rejuvenated during Irving’s tenure, was named the most important dance company in Sweden in Ballet International’s 2007 critic poll.
From 2007–2013, Irving was a frequent guest ballet master with The Royal Danish Ballet where he staged and rehearsed works by Jiří Kylián, George Balanchine, and Jerome Robbins. He has also been a guest teacher with numerous companies and schools in the U.S. and abroad for over 20 years. Additionally, he has staged ballets by Nacho Duato and Nicolo Fonte for companies such as The Royal Ballet Covent Garden, Nederlands Dans Theater, Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, Lyon Opera Ballet, and The Australian Ballet, to name just a few. In the U.S., Irving became associate director at Morphoses (formerly The Wheeldon Company) from 2011–2012, coordinating special initiatives aimed at defining the company’s unique profile in the dance world. From 2010–2016, he ran I-DANCE (Inspiring Dance: American Nations’ Choreographic Exchange), a nonprofit that sent teachers and choreographers to dance communities in Central and South America. Irving was named artistic director of Oregon Ballet Theatre in July 2013 and is proud to call Portland (and OBT) home since that time.
