LETTER FROM THE HIA-LI PRESIDENT & CEO Dear Valued Long Island Business Leader: On September 21st, we were honored to present our 29th Annual Business Achievement Awards to five exceptional Long Island organizations during our award ceremony. The event took place at a gala luncheon at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury. The HIA-LI Business Achievement Awards were established to recognize industry leadership, creativity, successful business operations, corporate vision, and forward-looking development/growth strategies. In the ever-evolving world of mathematics, the transitive property reigns supreme. If A equals B and B equals C, then A unequivocally equals C. But let’s shift our focus from the realm of numbers to the domain of real-world impact, as we delve into the equation that has been the driving force behind the remarkable career of our CEO, Dr. Subrina D. Oliver. Her dedication is not to mathematical concepts but to the transformative power of STEM education in creating a diverse workforce. The formula for STEM talent-pipeline success? Exposure, Awareness, and Access.

Awareness: B = C Now, onto the second part, “B = C.” In Dr. Oliver’s world, this translates to ensuring that once individuals are exposed to the wonders of STEM, they’re also made aware of the myriad possibilities within these fields. It’s akin to realizing that apples can be added to apples. Dr. Oliver achieves this by channeling workforce expertise into STEM industries,

Access: A = C The equation culminates with “A = C.” In simpler terms, exposure and awareness must lead to access. Dr. Oliver envisions a world where everyone, regardless of their background, has an equitable opportunity to dive into the vast pool of STEM opportunities. Under her guidance, O-High Technologies LLC is committed to providing equitable access to industry demands and ecosystems, substantive resources, events, programs, and innovative solutions. In her eyes, A and B must indisputably equal C for a truly inclusive STEM workforce. The Transitive Power of STEM Diversity Advocacy across the Manufacturing Occupational Outlook: Just as the transitive property in mathematics tells us that if A equals B and B equals C, then A must equal C, so too does STEM diversity advocacy lead us to a future occupational outlook that’s brimming with promise in manufacturing. Diverse Skills for Tomorrow’s Workforce (A = B): In the manufacturing landscape, diversity isn’t just about representation; it’s about fostering diverse skills and perspectives. When we advocate for STEM diversity (A), we empower the workforce with a broad spectrum of skills (B). This dynamic, versatile skill set is the cornerstone of a manufacturing future prepared to tackle evolving challenges. Global Competitiveness (B = C): A diverse, skilled workforce (B) is inherently more adaptable and innovative, driving manufacturing’s global competitiveness (C).

By embracing diversity, we ensure that our industry remains a global leader, ready to compete on the world stage. Tech-Driven Manufacturing (A = C): The future of manufacturing is deeply rooted in technology (C), and STEM disciplines (A) provide the foundation for mastering these advanced tools and processes. When we champion diversity in STEM, we’re actively contributing to a manufacturing sector that’s not only technologically advanced but also diverse and inclusive. Career Opportunities Abound (A = C): The growing demand for skilled professionals in manufacturing (C) presents a wealth of career opportunities. Our advocacy for STEM diversity (A) ensures that these opportunities are accessible to everyone, creating a future occupational outlook that’s both diverse and equitable. Just as the transitive property guides us to logical conclusions, our commitment to STEM diversity advocacy leads us to a manufacturing future that’s not only technologically advanced but also diverse and inclusive. Together, let’s continue to advocate, collaborate, and harness the transitive power of change to shape a manufacturing future that’s brilliantly innovative and profoundly equitable. Conclusion: Remember, diversity in STEM isn’t just a buzzword—it’s the key to innovation, creativity, and securing manufacturing’s place in the future. By advocating for diversity in your own capacity, you’re contributing to a brighter and more inclusive future for the entire manufacturing community. Join the conversation, raise your voice, and be the change you want to see. Together, we can make manufacturing a place where everyone’s potential can shine.

September 2023 - The HIA-LI Reporter Page 13

Exposure: A = B In this intriguing equation, “A = B,” Dr. Oliver places a spotlight on the pivotal role of exposure. Just as 1 + 1 equals 2, she recognizes that exposing the next generation to STEM is a fundamental step. Driven by this conviction, she has tirelessly worked to ensure that aspiring tech (and non-tech) enthusiasts catch a glimpse of the enchantment of STEM through O-High Technologies’ industry-driven initiatives, workshops, and captivating demonstrations. By amplifying exposure, Dr. Oliver ignites the flames of curiosity in young minds and sets the stage for a diverse future workforce.

engaging with governmental outreach programs, investments into academic talent development systems, and fostering intentional community engagement. Through these efforts, she ensures that young talents not only envision the doors STEM can open but also receive the keys to unlock them.

keepingcurrent Will The Holidays Bring Out The Best In Long Islanders This Year? By Paule T. Pachter, A.C.S.W., L.M.S.W. Chief Executive Officer Long Island Cares, Inc. © The Harry Chapin Regional Food Bank 631.582.3663 x 101 www.licares.org

Food banks, soup kitchens and emergency food pantries across the country are engaged in what has always been the busiest time of the year as we respond to the needs for Thanksgiving, and Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanza and other holidays. This has often been the time of year when many individuals and businesses on Long Island think about opportunities to help those in need, donate to their favorite charities, and are generally in a giving spirit. There are literally thousands of nonprofit charitable organizations throughout Long Island that are well deserving of your support, and I hope that as you read this column, you’ll think about supporting those causes that are near and dear to you and your family by volunteering your time, attending a special event, or even making a year-end monetary donation. While inflation and the high cost of goods are impacting many families on Long Island, it shouldn’t stop us from giving what we can afford to help our neighbors in need. With unemployment at its lowest levels in decades, more people are finding employment and have

improved their ability to be more self-sufficient. Though others have decided to move out of our region. What we do know is that some of our local pantries and soup kitchens continue to report an increase in the number of people coming to them for emergency food or a healthy meal, and that the number of people accessing Long Island Cares’ six community-based satellite locations have seen an increase of more than 35% of people receiving emergency food through the regional food bank’s hunger assistance and humanitarian service centers. We also see increases in the number of seniors participating in the Meals on Wheels program, and our own Mobile School Pantry program that provides weekend food for children in the Brentwood School District and the Riverhead School District. The need on Long Island is increasing overall between 25-45% and we are also seeing more frequent visits to our pantries and soup kitchens, and concern for families to share in the offerings of the holidays remains the same for those donors willing to help.

There are too many children, seniors, Veterans, homeless, disabled, newly arrived immigrants, and others living in poverty and even 200% above poverty in our region, (a family of four earning $51,000 per-year is considered to be living in poverty on Long Island) and many of them deserve your support this holiday season and throughout the year. Long Islanders have a very rich history of giving. This was very clear in 1980 when Harry Chapin founded Long Island Cares as the first food bank in our region, and it continues today, 43 years later when private donations to our organization account for a significant percentage of our annual budget. So, will you help provide a holiday meal to our neighbors in need this year? Of course you will, and you can do it by visiting your local food pantry, soup kitchen, senior center, Head Start program, mental health treatment program, Veterans Services agency, LGBTQ program, drug treatment and rehabilitation program, day care center, disabilities day habilitation program, special education school, or going online to: www.unitedwayli.org, www.guidestar.org, www. charitynavigator.org, which is also where you can find more information about our local nonprofit charities, including Long Island Cares-The Harry Chapin Regional Food Bank. Let’s make the holidays happy for our families, and another family who might be in need. The holiday spirit brings out the best in Long Islanders.

YOUR NEIGHBORS’ THANKSGIVING WISH LIST...FOOD Food is our most basic need, but food is not always available in every household as it should be. This holiday season you can help put meals on the tables of those that need it most.

health presents us with the rare opportunity to harness public support in ways that improve individual lives and community outcomes.

TELL US ABOUT HOW YOU/ YOUR COMPANY STARTED? WHAT YEAR ANNIVERSARY ARE YOU CELEBRATING

As an example, we know that services for those in mental health or substance use crises should be different than other emergency services, just as we already differentiate ERs and fire departments and police for other crises. That’s why, with state and county support, CN Guidance is launching an Intensive Crisis Stabilization Center to ensure behavioral health crisis services are available 24/7/365 across Long Island, so individuals, families, and first responders have the safe, expert care needed in high-risk situations.

Serving Long Islanders since 1972, CN Guidance & Counseling Services has grown substantially since its inception as an outpatient clinic. Our evolution has been shaped largely by emerging needs of consumers as they move through the process of recovery. As we emerge from our 50th anniversary, we celebrate this history and growth including key milestones like the establishment of our first community residence (1989), our launch of permanent Supportive Housing (1992), and expansion of our reach through specialized programs (Assertive Community Treatment, PROS, Care Management, etc.).

I also see a growing need to deliver tailored behavioral health services for children, young adults, and families. Isolation, social media, suicide, substance use—we know youth face immense obstacles today, and CN Guidance has been expanding our programming to meet these challenges.

Our integration of mental health, substance use, and primary care in 2014 set the stage for CNG to launch the region’s first Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic in 2017, and we continue to grow with community support.

HOW HAS YOUR BUSINESS PIVOTED THROUGHOUT THE PAST YEAR AS A RESULT OF THE PANDEMIC?

WHAT WAS A TURNING POINT FOR YOU/YOUR COMPANY?

One major focus since the pandemic has been— more as an intensified focus than a pivot—to truly center our staff, who make our success possible. Our mission, reach, and impact all contribute to making CN Guidance a great place to work, and the agency likewise places a high priority on staff success and fulfillment, which contributes to employee retention.

Barbara Bartell, who was CN Guidance’s CEO until her passing in 2013, was one of Long Island’s pioneer advocates and leaders in the behavioral health field. She joined CNG as a receptionist the day the clinic opened its doors in 1972, and she rose through the ranks to become CEO in 1991. Barbara transformed CNG from a small outpatient clinic to a multi-service behavioral health organization offering a robust and diverse array of treatment services and supportive programs. While her passing was a turning point for us, we have not turned the page on her vision. We honor her legacy by continuing to grow our agency and expand our reach and services to support Long Islanders in need.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR COMPANIES PROFILE TODAY.

• Integrated Treatment for mental health and substance use • Residential Services Supervised group homes and crisis housing • Recovery Supports including mobile recovery unit and peers • Outreach • Education for the public, clients, families, and providers • Community Trainings on topics like Mental Health First Aid, Narcan opioid overdose reversal, and fentanyl test strips

WHAT IS YOUR COMPANY’S PHILOSOPHY? We believe recovery is possible for everyone. When a person is ready to begin their journey of recovery, they deserve to be aware of the high-quality services that are available to them, and we should design our services to remove barriers to their access. Our services should be readily available to everyone eligible, not only those who have the means or inside information to begin treatment. In these ways, our philosophy centers individuals and the communities we serve, and we seek to improve outcomes related to the social determinants of health that we know will both save us all costs and save lives.

WHAT OPPORTUNITIES DO YOU SEE IN THE FUTURE? Growing awareness of and support for behavioral

MOVING FORWARD, HOW HAS YOUR BUSINESS STRATEGY/ PERSPECTIVE SHIFTED? Financial responsibility has been a strategic focus of mine since joining CN Guidance in 2013, and I am proud we have built on that foundation this decade. We diversified revenue sources to avoid overreliance on fundraising or any singular service model, and we vastly increased our grant-funded programming to fuel our growth in furtherance of our mission. Now, along with our highly effective Board and leadership, I am focused on achieving sustainable growth in our program portfolio, which will translate into lasting improvements in health equity and behavioral health outcomes across Long Island. Attention to health equity achieves two goals: it advances our mission and makes economic sense for funders, too. We seek to improve both the fair and just access to value-based care that our diverse populations deserve, and this translates into better community outcomes that save taxpayers and providers costs and improve public welfare at the same time.

September 2023 - The HIA-LI Reporter Page 25

Touching more than 30,000 individuals on Long Island in 2022 alone, CN Guidance delivers 40+ programs across four priority areas: Prevention, Treatment, Harm Reduction, Recovery. We benefit the community through:

• Mobile services • Specialized programs (ACT, PROS, Health Home, Navigator, HCBS, etc.)

For example, despite the myriad challenges of COVID-19, CN Guidance made ZERO layoffs due to the pandemic. In fact, our staff grew to more than 400 individuals during this timeframe.
