LETTER FROM THE HIA-LI PRESIDENT & CEO Dear HIA-LI Member, Through these unprecedented times innovation is key. The HIA-LI, has launched the HIA-LI Premium Marketplace, an online platform that enables businesses to showcase their services, products, and offerings to HIA-LI members as well as all Long Island businesses and consumers at large. Designed to help businesses enhance exposure for their company brand, HIA-LI Premium Marketplace members are able to instantly communicate or book meetings with other business professionals. Participants can also link with other members’ social media platforms, promote current or new products and services, and showcase company videos and photos. The HIA-LI Premium Marketplace offers local companies an excellent way to enrich their connections with their target audiences. This one-of-a-kind online business platform promotes communication and collaboration among companies across Long Island. The Marketplace concept arose from feedback from HIA-LI members seeking new ways to promote partnerships, networking, and business development within the organization and around the region. keepingcurrent Food Banks are on the Front Line to Feed Ukrainian Refugees and the Hungry in Eastern Europe: Long Islanders Can Help in These Efforts By Paule T. Pachter, A.C.S.W., L.M.S.W. Chief Executive Officer Long Island Cares, Inc. The Harry Chapin Regional Food Bank 10 Davids Drive – Harry Chapin Way Hauppauge, New York 11788 Office: 631.582.3663 x 101 www.licares.org

Once Russian President Vladimir Putin invaded Ukraine in a barbaric show of military force, the United States and its NATO allies knew the government and people of Ukraine would face a humanitarian crisis the free world hasn’t witnessed since World War II. Since the start of the invasion on February 25, the Ukrainian people have been subjected to bombs falling on their neighborhoods, fires engulfing their hospitals, and hundreds of dead bodies lining their streets. As more than 2 million Ukrainian women, children and seniors create a mass exodus from their homeland to countries such as Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Hungary and other safe havens, we knew that safe shelter, medicine and food would be needed to support these new refugees and the brave men and soldiers they left behind to fight their war with Putin’s army. The situation in Ukrainian cities like Kharkiv,

Kakhovka, Sumy and Kyiv is desperate, with local organizations and the Kyiv City Charity Foundation Food Bank beginning to run out of food. Without the support of the United States and our allies to supply Ukraine with food, personal hygiene products, baby food, canned fish, meat, vegetables, dry milk, pet food, soups, flour, vegetable oil, cleaning products, diapers, sugar, tea and other staples, people will die from malnutrition and hunger. Food supplies from abroad can be gathered at key locations near the western border of Ukraine and help prevent hunger. And from there, be redistributed throughout countries where the millions of refugees are located. While I recognize and applaud the numerous efforts on Long Island to collect coats, medical supplies, food and water for Ukraine, it is critical that logistics are in place to deliver this support

to the Ukrainian people as soon as possible. Several volunteer organizations are already reporting that the flow of supplies for Ukraine have been overwhelming, and delays getting the humanitarian aide to where it is most needed are occurring. That is why Long Island Cares, The Harry Chapin Food Bank has made a monetary donation to our colleagues at The Global Food Banking Network. We encourage other organizations and Americans to do the same. By supporting The Global Food Banking Network, they will help with efforts to support the European Food Banks Federation (FEBA) to respond to the hunger crisis in Ukraine and surrounding countries. These humanitarian efforts are similar to the coordination that Feeding America led during Hurricane Sandy, COVID-19 and other national disasters, allowing the regional food banks respond to the increase in emergency food assistance. As the Russian invasion of Ukraine continues and intensifies, Long Islanders wanting to send aide to Ukraine should do so in any way they can afford. If you specifically want to support efforts to provide food and supplies to the food banks in eastern Europe, you might start by visiting foodbanking.org or eurofoodbank.org.

keepingcurrent How to Avoid Another Dismal Group Health Renewal By Louis Bernardi President and Founder BritePath 516.590.0865 Direct 516.977.3018 Fax lcbernardi@groupplannersinc.com www.britepathins.com

Whether you’ve been a benefit decision maker for thirty years or one; it is important to understand why behavior regarding employee benefits is so different than other cost centers. First, let’s define benefit decision maker (BDM). A DBM is anyone at a company with input or final say in the benefit decisions. It is less likely that a member of the executive team (the C-Suite) is heavily involved in the benefit decision process these days. This trend happened over the past twenty years because insurers provide plan sponsors with less and less data. With no data to conduct a proper analysis, the finance teams have focused their efforts elsewhere. Whatever the case, the issue for employers is that they typically have very little actionable data. This has contributed to the ‘Pay More, Get Less’ results that plague group health plans.

March 2022 - The HIA-LI Reporter Page 14

For this reason, most employers open their calendar to benefit analysis a measly 60 to 90 days per year. You’d think a top two or three expense for

most mid-sized and large employers would garner more attention. There have been significant developments in technology since the ACA regulated the release of claims data which tech companies have made available to help employers make informed decisions. A variety of solutions exist that allow employers to collect actionable claims data from commercial insurers. This data can be used for stop-loss marketing, prescription cost analysis, identify health risks and make informed benefit design decisions. This data uncovered artificial Rx and medical prices and it can identify quality metrics essential for employers and members to make health care decisions. While the data is useful, it is imperative that it be user friendly. Insurers don’t acknowledge their role of assist members in acquiring high-value care. Insurers have relationships with their clinicians, but it’s the health and wellbeing of the member that they laud as their goal or mission. Equally as important is their desire to help employers and members control costs. In this regard, they have failed. The five largest insurers and their pharmacy benefit partners seem to share one thing in common, their performance on the Fortune 100. At the same time, member out-of-pocket costs and premiums skyrocket. Quality of benefits, employee

satisfaction and take-home pay have plummeted. Can a BDM be expected to spend the time necessary to evaluate all aspects of the benefit ecosystem? Probably not, especially since it is common for a BDM to wear a multiple hats within their organization. There must be another option…and there is. Benefit Decision makers can start by making a few subtle shifts in their behavior and mindset. Mindset Shift - Understand they are not purchasing insurance, they are purchasing access to highquality health care. Expectation Shift – Predictable behavior has lowered performance out of trusted partners involved in the evaluation process. If the purchaser resets their expectations, they will get better results. Increase healthcare and insurance literacy – Join online groups dedicated to benefits. Expand your knowledge and better results will follow because of heighted awareness. Behavior Change – Discuss alternatives and request your renewal earlier. 60-90 days is not sufficient time to evaluate options and implement changes. Evaluate Partners – ‘Good Service’ should not take a front seat to the ability of your broker/advisor to provide high-performance products. Chance your expectations and mindset and those around you will change theirs.

Oak Tree Leadership Consulting is about personalized leadership training to create individual leader style and organizational transcendent teams. Across the organizational spectrum, and embedded within every system, there are four factors that determine the function and operation of the group. These are the factors of character, where staff are just plain good people, and commitment, where we willingly invest in others to complete to the task at hand. Also, collaboration is about working with people who are natural sharers. Finally, competency is the organization that just knows how to do things well. They are the assets in the leader’s hands that engender excellence and effectiveness. Oak Tree is about helping you become this leader, and facilitating this kind of team: a transcendent team that will face all situations together. We provide you with the knowledge, tools, techniques, and guidance to navigate these factors that engender a leader’s potential for success.
