BOUNDARY BREAKER: Libby with her husband Wayne and in her role as goal umpire.

Boundaries Breaking

Libby's Journey as the First Female Goal

Umpire in the Riverland.

In the small, close-knit communities of Australia's Riverland, the echoes of weekend football matches resonate deeply. Among the crowd and chaos, one figure stands out. It's Libby, the first female goal umpire in the region.

So how did Libby, a teacher by profession with no prior knowledge of football's rules, find herself officiating in this male-dominated arena? It all started when Libby and her husband, Wayne, moved to the Riverland. Wayne, feeling too old to continue playing football, decided to take up umpiring and encouraged Libby to join him. "Every weekend he's going to be doing that, I may as well get involved as well," Libby recalls.

cover story
4

Despite her initial hesitation due to a lack of understanding of the game, the supportive community and comprehensive training helped her thrive in her new role.

Libby's entry into goal umpiring was more than just a personal achievement; it was a pioneering step for women in the sport within her community. Her realisation of being the first female goal umpire hit when she noticed the gender-specific signs at the change rooms. This revelation wasn’t just surprising; it was amusing to her. Her presence in this role challenged the status quo and paved the way for other women in the Riverland to consider roles they might not have previously imagined for themselves.

Libby's influence extended beyond the football field into her professional life as a teacher at Renmark High School. She inspired her students, especially young women, to engage in sports like boundary umpiring. Her encouragement and example showed them that gender should not define or limit their choices in sports or any other fields. And now, as a keen volunteer in the SANFL/ECH Walking Football league, she is pushing against the idea, commonly held, that older people don’t play sports like footy.

But Libby’s story is not just about sports; it's about a life dedicated to community service and the joy it brings. From volunteering with Operation Flinders to help disadvantaged youths, to maintaining the Heysen Trail and teaching kayaking, Libby finds happiness and satisfaction in giving back.

Despite the challenges and societal changes over the years, Libby's formula for happiness remains simple and powerful—family, friends, and the great outdoors. Whether it's taking her elder sister out in nature or enjoying the company of her grandchildren, Libby believes in the therapeutic power of nature and community.

As Libby plans to scale back her myriad of activities to enjoy some well-earned rest, she remains excited about the future. Watching her family grow and her community thrive continues to bring her immense joy and satisfaction. Through her journey, Libby has not only left a mark on the Riverland’s sports culture but has also demonstrated the profound impact of leading by example in fostering inclusivity and active engagement at every age. Libby's story is a testament to the power of stepping out of one's comfort zone and embracing new challenges to take on MORE in life.

Whether you love footy or are just looking for a fun way to stay active, Walking Footy might be the ideal activity for you.

Brought to you by SANFL and ECH, Walking Footy is a fun, modified Australian Rules Football program created for people aged 50 or over. Played in small teams on a field the size of a basketball court, Walking Footy is a fun, inclusive and safe game with no running, tackling or bumping involved. It’s a great way to meet new people and incorporate exercise in your life in a social and fun way.

Blossoming Friendships

I n the month of April, clients, residents and team members took the opportunity to explore the beauty and diversity of plants from across Australia and around the world at the Adelaide Botanic Gardens.

They enjoyed an autumn rose show where they heard from Senior Horticultural Curator and rose expert, Andrew Hart over an afternoon tea.

Afterwards, the group walked through the International Rose Garden, which has a striking display of over 2,700 roses. They also had the opportunity to vote for their top five favourite roses in order of preference. The results provide an excellent insight for the rose breeders, introducers, growers and retailers as to the most popular varieties.

As part of a separate event, participants from our ECH walking groups were taken on a guided tour of the gardens where they learnt about the garden’s history, biodiversity and the cultural collections in the Museum of Economics.

What’s more, it was a great opportunity to meet and mingle with other participants from ECH walking groups and Community Engagement programs across ECH.

Thank you to everyone who attended, and to the team at the Adelaide Botanic Gardens for being wonderful hosts. ECH is proud to partner with Botanic Gardens, so that we can provide opportunities for our community to enjoy this wonderful place.

Look out for more exciting opportunities to come later in the year with our other sponsorship partners!

Elaine at Adelaide Festival Daylight Express Event

E laine says, "these events support me both mentally and physically. I feel privileged when I can use my taxi voucher and not have to worry about booking something to attend. I like that they are events that break me out of my usual routine and give me something more to talk about. I think it's wonderful that we have this opportunity!"

What Elaine loves about her Home Care Package:

“I appreciate the help. The biggest thing is mentally knowing I don’t have to get myself in a tis. Physically, I can spend 2 – 3 days in bed if I push myself and not ask for help."

ECH clients had the pleasure of a morning tea at the Art Gallery of South Australia in the Atrium Foyer, connecting with Adelaide Festival’s CEO Kath M Mainland and ECH CE Claire Scapinello, prior to Grammy Award-winning American contralto Meredith Arwady’s Daylight Express performance at Elder Hall.

Meredith Arwady's sensational singing was accompanied by Michael Ierace on piano at Elder Hall as part of Adelaide Festival. Her rich vocal intensity brought to life an eclectic program with a distinctively avian theme, including Blackbird, Feed the Birds, Somewhere Over the Rainbow, Poisoning Pigeons in the Park and more.

National Reconciliation Week

For this 2024 National Reconciliation Week we encouraged Encore residents to attend our first, First Nations Foods session by Damien and Rebecca, Founders of Warndu and Co-Culture Lab; for an interactive hands on celebration of First Nations foods and culture. Here they made native inspired cocktails, tasted native foods and learnt about the foods from our own backyards.

Warndu is an Indigenous owned company which means good in the Adnyamathanha language.

Damien Coulthard (@Damiencoulthard) is an Adnyamathanha and Dieri person of the Flinders Ranges, an international artist, cultural educator and high school teacher.

Rebecca Sullivan (@grannyskills) is a food educator, regenerative farmer, Yale World Fellow and TV presenter who has featured in ABC's Gardening Australia as well as on Channels Nine and Ten.

Once upon a time, there was a man named

David.

So the story begins... it has to be said that all stories start with words and David is our "Word Master"! Check our socials for David's weekly 'Word of the Week'.

client story 8

We have previously shared news of David's walking group to encourage others to follow in their footsteps! Their walks start with some limbering up exercises led by Von, a fellow walker, and David sharing his chosen word of the week. On the first half of the walk, the group contemplates the word to themselves then, on the way back, are given the opportunity to contribute their thoughts to a group discussion.

But who is David?

David's journey began in Melbourne, where the bustling streets and vibrant culture shaped his early years. He ventured northward to Darwin, drawn by the promise of adventure and the allure of the tropics (and his dad). David recounts his time in Darwin fondly, reminiscing about the breathtaking sunsets over the Timor Sea and the wild beauty of the Top End, all watched out of Fannie Bay on one of his regular twilight sails on his boat, fondly known as the 'NTS'.

After several years in Darwin, David found himself gravitating towards Adelaide, a city that would become his true home for over two decades. Adelaide's friendly neighbourhoods won him over, as he has settled into life in an ECH village in Glenelg.

While David's health has had its challenges, he talks of his plans for the next trip to Indonesia with his partner Josie. They support 'Mandiri Crafts' that come out of Yogyakarta.

"For men may come and men may go, But I go on forever."

From The Brook, a poem by Alfred Lord Tennyson

THE WORD MASTER:

David with his lemon tree, relaxing at home and with his walking group.

His philanthropic nature is evident, as he has dedicated himself to volunteer work, pouring countless hours into various community initiatives. He spoke animatedly about his experiences, from supporting the homeless at the Hutt Street Centre, as well as through the Pilgrim Church, to choirs in Darwin and in Adelaide. He has also been the 'library trolley' service at the Royal Darwin Hospital, an OpShop worker, and a Guide at the Bay Discovery Centre in the Glenelg Town Hall.

David's passion for community engagement is evident in every word he speaks!

But David's tale is more than just words; it is a testament to resilience, adaptability, and the profound impact one person can have when guided by a spirit of generosity and compassion. It is about creating spontaneous positivity, to help people travel through life...

Neighbour Day … every day!

Neighbour Day was on Sunday, 31 March; a perfect day to connect with neighbours and celebrate the difference that can be made.

Paul of ECH Gables of St Morris was recognised for volunteering and having a friendly spirit. Nominated by Lyndal & Keith Johnson, and Julie & Ray Owen, Paul has made a significant and positive impact on his community since moving in a year ago.

Known for his kindness, he regularly volunteers for various tasks, from fixing things for neighbours to running the carpet bowling on Tuesdays. Paul's 'The Stump & Magpie Cafe' on his lawn serves as a gathering spot for chats over tea or coffee, showcasing his hospitable nature. He goes above and beyond, offering respite for caregivers and assisting with various community activities without seeking recognition. Paul embodies traits of friendliness, generosity, and helpfulness, making him a cherished neighbour.

“Nothing is too much trouble for him and he gives of his time freely with his big, warm, generous heart. He truly is a great neighbour in a great community.”

An honourable mention goes to June Rouvray from Fairfield Lodge, Glenelg. For the past eleven years in her current village, June actively helps to keep the community tidy and supports her neighbours, demonstrating her kindness and dedication. As well as Fay from ECH Mervyn Graham Lodge, who brightens up the village with her friendly conversations and helps prune her neighbour's roses.

resident story 10

“The community is not just one man… it is a community effort… so I would like to make special mention of the others in our community who also give much of themselves to help others, firstly my wife Robyn… I couldn’t do any of this without her and of course, also Sue, Lyndall & Keith at the village who work tirelessly in our community. We (Robyn and I) haven’t had a single moment of regret since moving in and it’s the community that makes it!”

“The thing that sets him apart from all the other kind people is his selflessness. Nothing is too much trouble.”

Brian Meet the Artist Stubbington

For the ECH Encore SALA Exhibition

The South Australian Living Artists (SALA) Festival is a statewide festival of visual art which was established in 1998 to promote and celebrate the many talented visual artists in South Australia. While celebrating our 60th year, we will highlight the creativity within our ECH Encore community, to engage with both the local community and the broader audience that SALA attracts. There is creativity in every corner at Encore.

LAUNCH EVENT 3pm Wednesday 7 August at Encore Apartments, 85 Smart Road, Modbury. Please RSVP by emailing marketing@ech.asn.au

Brian shares his story by saying, "The only thing I recall getting pleasure from in my school days was art, and my art teacher. I recall being outside in the yard one day, the class had to draw the teacher; her name was Miss Raymond, and pretty good looking. After a while of scratching around she came over to view my work, and was disgusted with what I’d produced she said 'Brian do I look like that? and do my legs look like sticks? LOOK.'

"Apart from those early school days I have never had any lessons in art, just squeeze a bit of paint here and there and make it into something.

"I've painted and sold thousands over the years, mostly earning back less than what the painting has cost me! Oil paints are expensive and I've always used the best quality.

"I did sell a painting once at auction and got more than Pro Hart. The money went to the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

"Of late I've started doing some painting in acrylic mainly because of the space that I'm now restricted in, (smell of oil and danger of spilling) and of cause cost. I think for me the hardest thing is being able to stop."

Balancing Indoor and Outdoor Workouts for Winter Wellness

As the cooler months roll in, it can feel challenging to stay active. Jacob advocates for a balanced fitness approach, incorporating indoor and outdoor activities to maintain overall well-being.

Outdoor Activities

Despite the chill, you can still enjoy outdoor workouts by choosing the warmest part of the day for walks, typically late morning or early afternoon. Partnering up with a friend adds warmth and motivation. Using a walking stick or hiking pole provides stability and confidence, reducing the risk of falls and enabling safe exploration of nature.

Indoor Exercises

For days when going outside isn't feasible, gentle at-home exercises offer an effective alternative. Chair yoga, stretching routines and resistance band exercises improve flexibility, strength and balance without specialised equipment or intense exertion.

ECH Group Exercise Classes

ECH provides a range of group exercise classes tailored to your needs and interests. The sessions offer a supportive and social environment, catering to different fitness levels and fostering connections among participants. Essential Tips

for Mastering Garden Mulching

Mulching is a crucial step in garden care. During the cooler months, mulching helps plants to grow by forming a protective layer against heavy rain and cold temperatures. Here are some valuable tips to ensure optimal results for both garden beds and potted plants.

Sheet Mulching Technique

Before applying the mulch, consider sheet mulching with newspaper or cardboard. This creates a barrier that suppresses weeds and retains moisture, enhancing the effectiveness of the mulch layer.

Choose the Right Mulch

Avoid using green mulch as it can deplete nitrogen from the soil during decomposition, leading to nutrient deficiencies (known as nitrogen drawdown). Opt instead for mulches that promote microbial activity in the soil, enriching its health and fertility.

Utilise Autumn Leaves

Autumn leaves are a fantastic, cost-effective mulching option. As nature's own mulch, they contribute to soil health and structure while providing insulation and weed suppression. Leave them intact to maximise their benefits as mulch.

What To Do When Targeted by Online Scams

We look at what action to take in the distressing event of falling victim to an online scam.

Act Swiftly

If you've sent money to a scammer, swift action is crucial. Contact your bank immediately to report the transaction and prevent further unauthorised withdrawals. Time is of the essence in minimising financial losses.

Report Incidents

Informing the appropriate authorities is key to combatting online scams. Report the incident to ScamWatch and the Australian Cybercrime Online Reporting Network (ACORN) to provide valuable information for ongoing investigations and to help protect others from falling victim.

Monitor and Secure

Stay vigilant by monitoring your accounts for any suspicious activity. If your personal information has been compromised, consider getting new cards and changing passwords to prevent further unauthorised access.

Involve Law Enforcement

In cases involving significant financial losses, don't hesitate to report the scam to the police. They can investigate further and potentially recover funds or apprehend the perpetrators.

Supporting those in need this winter

Thousands of South Australians, many of them aged in their 50s and beyond, face a cold and lonely winter due to homelessness.

From family breakdowns to financial difficulties and mental health challenges, they come from many diverse backgrounds and circumstances. The one thing they have in common is an absence of safe, secured and dignified accommodation.

Recently, as the cold weather set in, ECH had the opportunity to extend a hand to those less fortunate with a timely donation.

More than 100 clean and near new wool blankets, surplus to ECH’s needs, were donated to Hutt Street Centre in waterproof bags together with a wind-up torch and radio.

Organisations like Hutt Street Centre are a beacon of hope and support for those experiencing homelessness, empowering them to rebuild their lives, so ECH was very pleased to be able to make this donation on our community’s behalf.

You may like to consider what goods you could donate to those in need this winter, with Hutt Street Centre gratefully accepting not only blankets but backpacks, sleeping bags, towels, non-perishable food, metro transport tickets and gift vouchers.
