Beat the Heat Tips for Hydration During the Warmer Months

Summer brings beautiful sunny days and warmer temperatures, but it also increases the risk of dehydration. Staying hydrated is essential for maintaining energy, focus and overall health. Here’s how to avoid dehydration and thrive during the hot months.

Why Hydration Matters

Water plays a critical role in regulating body temperature, transporting nutrients and supporting organ function.

When you don’t consume enough fluids, your body can’t perform these tasks efficiently, leading to symptoms like fatigue, dizziness, headaches or even heatstroke. Older adults are particularly at risk as the sensation of thirst diminishes with age.

Signs of Dehydration

Be alert for warning signs such as:

• Feelings of confusion or light-headedness

• Dry mouth, lips and tongue

• Dark urine

• Less frequent urination

• Constipation

• Muscle cramps

• Swelling of the feet

If you experience these symptoms, increase your fluid intake immediately and seek medical attention if they persist.

Consult Your GP

It’s a good idea to check in with your GP, especially if you have medical conditions that affect your hydration levels or if you’re taking medications like diuretics. Your GP can help you develop a hydration plan tailored to your health needs.

Keep Cool in the Heat

Combine hydration with strategies to beat the heat:

• Wear lightweight, breathable clothing.

• Stay indoors during peak heat hours.

• Use fans or air conditioning to maintain a cool environment.

By staying mindful of your fluid intake and taking steps to regulate your body temperature, you can enjoy the warmer months without falling prey to dehydration. Stay safe, stay hydrated, and savour the summer!

Tips to Stay Hydrated

Drink Regularly: Aim to drink water consistently throughout the day, not just when you feel thirsty. Carry a reusable water bottle to remind yourself to take sips.

Hydrate with Food: Include water-rich foods like cucumbers, watermelon, celery and strawberries in your meals and snacks. These foods can supplement your fluid intake while providing essential nutrients.

Switch It Up: If plain water feels monotonous, jazz it up with a slice of lemon, orange, or cucumber. Herbal teas and sparkling water are also excellent alternatives.

Set a Routine: Make hydration part of your daily schedule - have a glass of water with each meal and snack.

Brian and Nina’s love story began at ES Wigg & Son, where they both worked in stationery manufacturing. After some persistence, Nina agreed to go on a date, and the rest is history. They are now the proud parents of three children, seven grandchildren and a bouncing baby great-granddaughter.

Their lives changed in recent years when Nina was diagnosed with dementia. Initially, Brian found the biggest challenge was knowing what services were available so that Nina could remain living at home for as long as possible.

Navigating this new reality was initially daunting, but with time and the right support, they found a way forward.

With the support of ECH and a network of carers and services, Nina can still live at home, which is a priority for Brian: "Nina has looked after me all her life, and now I’m repaying her.”

Keeping Nina physically, mentally and socially active has also been important.

Nina attends the ECH Day Program three days a week. The program is vital for Nina, who participates in activities she loves, like music. While Nina enjoys a safe, welcoming space to socialise and pursue her interests, the program provides Brian with valuable respite.

“We get so much help from ECH. I can’t speak highly enough of the team members; they’re lovely people. The consistency of care is wonderful. Nina knows them personally and it’s heartwarming to see her greet them with open arms.”

Come inside the State Theatre Company

ECH’s support adapts as Nina’s needs change. Recently, the couple moved from their ECH village in Mitcham to Morphett Vale, bringing them closer to family. This move ensures Nina continues receiving the personalised care she needs while staying connected with loved ones.

Brian and Nina experienced a full-circle moment when they returned to the historic ES Wigg & Son building, now home to the State Theatre Company, for the Jack Maggs Wardrobe Tour. The experience was made possible through ECH's valued partnership with the State Theatre Company South Australia.

Brian is enormously grateful for the opportunity to participate, “The day trips are a break from the mundane routine. It makes Nina feel better, and it makes me feel better.”

The sense of connection and support Brian and Nina have found through ECH goes far beyond the day trips.

“We’ve come to know the ECH people like family, like friends. They’ve made such a difference in our lives,” Brian reflects. “All our children are wonderful, but they have their own families. With ECH stepping in, it strikes a good balance.”

With personalised support, compassionate care and enriching new experiences, Brian and Nina feel empowered to embrace this next chapter with ECH as their trusted partner.

Support at Home is coming soon

What is Support at Home?

Support at Home is a new Australian Government initiative designed to simplify care and prioritise supported and independent ageing.

Commencing from 1 July this year, Support at Home replaces the Home Care Packages (HCP) Program and Short-Term Restorative Care (STRC) Programme.

The Commonwealth Home Support Program (CHSP) will also merge with Support at Home no sooner than 1 July 2027.

If you currently receive support or services through these programs, you may have received a letter in the post from the government advising of upcoming changes.

Support at Home is one of the ways the Australian Government is implementing recommendations that were made in the final report of the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety.

The Support at Home program aims to help older Australians stay in the comfort of their own homes for longer, by giving them more choice, flexibility and transparency to better tailor their services to their individual needs.

Importantly, if you are a home care recipient and currently access support and services from ECH, you can continue to do so through Support at Home.

What does it mean for me?

If you were already receiving a Home Care Package, on the National Priority System or assessed as eligible

for a package on 12 September 2024, the government has advised that you will be no worse off under Support at Home.

Where can I get some help with what I need right now?

Many of you are reaching out to us now to review your needs and your current services. Once we speak with you we are then able to recommend additional services that

can help you to get more out of life. We are encouraging you to appropriately utilise available funds before 1 July, 2025. This will help to demonstrate the level of support that you will require into the future, under Support at Home.

We are here to help, so please reach out to your Care Partner or one of our friendly team members today on 1300 275 324.

Where do I find out more?

We appreciate that you may have questions about the changes Support at Home will bring, however the government is still to confirm many details about the program.

We will continue to provide updates so we can let all of our residents, clients and the wider community know how they will be affected.

If you have questions about Support at Home

If you have questions about Support at Home you can visit our dedicated information hub at ech.asn.au/ support-at-home or speak with one of our friendly team members during business hours on 1300 275 324.

Helen Walker’s Story of Impact and Advocacy

Helen Walker’s life at ECH’s retirement village in Micham, is a testament to how retirement can be one of life’s most enriching chapters. She epitomises ECH’s ethos of getting more out of life.

A highly accomplished professional, Helen has played a pivotal role in shaping healthcare in Australia. Her distinguished career includes nursing leadership positions in palliative care at Mary Potter Hospice, Cabrini Palliative Care in Melbourne and Laurel Hospice at Flinders Medical Centre. She has Board Director experience and is now Deputy Presiding Officer of the SA VAD Review Board.

Helen channels her passion for progress into her role as Chair of ECH’s Consumer Advisory Board she continues to contribute to the community with vigour and purpose, advocating for empowered and inclusive aging.

ECH also provides practical support that makes a real difference in her day-to-day life. “I have Mohammed coming once a fortnight, which is glorious. He does the floors and bathroom, and I dust.”

More than her professional achievements, Helen is defined by her zest for life and deep appreciation for the supportive environment ECH provides.

“I just love living here,” Helen says. “It’s friendly, and my home is beautifully located close to everything I need.”

Helen spends her days doing what she loves, from the Fit for Life program at College Grove, where she works up a sweat and enjoys coffee with the group afterwards, to book clubs, choir rehearsals and art house films at the Palace Nova. An avid reader with a passion for history and podcasts, Helen’s curiosity keeps her learning and growing.

Helen feels safe, supported and part of a community that values her.“ECH is very progressive, always moving forward, and it recognises that we come with a wealth of life experience and are still contributing,” she says.

For Helen Walker, living at ECH is not just about retirement. It’s about thriving, growing and embracing every opportunity to truly get more out of life.

Joy’s Artistic Journey Creating a Beautiful Life

In her small but vibrant workspace, surrounded by colourful shards of glass and the melodies of honeyeaters from her garden, Joy creates mosaic masterpieces that reflect her connection to nature and her unstoppable spirit.

Joy, who lives with her husband Trevor, receives support services from ECH that are specifically tailored to meet her needs. With ECH managing tasks like cleaning, shopping, and personal care, Joy can channel her energy into her true passion: creating art.

“I’ve always been creative,” Joy explains. “I started with pottery and watercolours, but 20 years ago, I discovered mosaics and knew it was what I wanted to focus on. It’s my meditation and my joy.”

Living with Parkinson’s disease and chronic pain, Joy is determined to create while her body still allows. “I thought, my time’s running out. I’ve been working

harder than ever - sometimes spending hours in my shed, even through the night.”

Each piece of glass in Joy’s mosaics is hand-cut, graded, and arranged to create seamless transitions of colour. “Mosaics are intricate work,” she says.

“People don’t realise how much effort goes into them, but for me, it’s so satisfying. Grout day, when it all comes together, is the best.”

Beyond the beauty of her art, mosaics are a source of healing and self-expression for Joy.

“When you have Parkinson’s, you can’t dwell on it,” she says. “This keeps me occupied and feeling good about myself.”

Trevor is her greatest supporter, encouraging her creative pursuits, while ECH ensures she can focus on what matters. “ECH takes care of the day-to-day so I can focus on what’s important to me. They really help me get more out of life.”

Discover the Women’s Health Clinic

At the ECH College Grove Wellness Centre, the physiotherapist-led Women’s Health Clinic offers expert care for women facing pelvic health challenges, including incontinence, prolapse, and pelvic pain. With a compassionate and personalised approach, clients participate in one-on-one sessions tailored to meet their needs, ensuring the highest level of support.

Incontinence affects twice as many women as men, often due to unique reproductive health events such as childbirth and menopause. Recognising how challenging it can be to talk about these issues, the clinic provides a safe space where women can find both understanding and practical

solutions, helping them regain confidence and achieve their health goals.

ECH Physiotherapist Jodi says, “Many clients hadn’t heard how a physiotherapist could help with pelvic health issues. After listening to women during regular physiotherapy appointments, I realised it was important to offer a space to discuss bladder and bowel control issues openly.”

The clinic offers a comprehensive approach, starting with an in-depth discussion of each client’s medical history, followed by education on pelvic floor health. Through targeted exercises, such as pelvic floor strengthening, women are empowered to address symptoms like incontinence and pelvic pain.

The clinic operates exclusively at the College Grove Wellness Centre on a referral basis, with ECH Care Coordinators identifying clients who may benefit from the service.

As Jodi encourages, "Even if you’re concerned, come and have a chat. You never know what advice could make a difference."

If you think you could benefit from the Women's Health Clinic, speak with your ECH Care Coordinator today. They can assess your needs and provide a referral to the service. For general enquiries, call 1300 275 324.

Living Well with Dementia: Support for Every Step of the Journey

Dementia is a collective term for a group of symptoms caused by disease to the brain that can affect thinking, behaviour, and the ability to do everyday tasks. While the risk of developing dementia increases with advancing age, it's not an automatic part of ageing. Recognising early symptoms and seeking professional advice is crucial. “We want to raise awareness of the early signs of dementia while emphasising the importance of consulting with a GP for further evaluation,” says Jo Young, Dementia Support Coordinator at ECH. Symptoms may include memory lapses, confusion with dates and times, and changes in mood or behaviour.

Living with dementia can be challenging, but with the right support, it is possible to live well at home and get more out of life.

ECH offers personalised Home Support services, including tailored care plans, practical strategies for daily living and assistance with household tasks such as laundry and vacuuming. Our Home Support team members provide compassionate personal care, nursing and medication management to help individuals maintain a safe and comfortable environment.

ECH’s Wellness services provide significant benefits for individuals living with dementia. These include occupational therapy for home safety and independence, cognitive therapies such as music therapy and neurological rehabilitation and

dementia-specific social work to guide families. Additional support helps individuals and caregivers achieve personal goals and maintain a sense of purpose.

ECH’s Day Program provides engaging activities like music therapy, arts and crafts, and horticultural experiences tailored to individual preferences and needs. These programs foster social interaction and offer carers time to recharge, knowing their loved ones are well cared for. “We start with a social interview to understand each participant’s interests, dietary needs, and life experiences,” explains Jo.

Jo encourages families to stay connected and utilise available services. “If you notice changes,

Common changes that may be associated with dementia:

Changes in thinking and memory:

• Forgetting recent events or getting lost in familiar places

• Trouble learning new things or finding the right words

• Making poor or risky choices

• Losing track of time, repeating questions or misplacing things

Changes in daily activities:

• Difficulty with daily tasks like cooking, paying bills or shopping

• Disturbed sleep patterns or sleeping more during the day

• Trouble with walking or movement, such as shuffling or stiffness

Changes in mood and behaviour:

• Feeling unusually sad, anxious or hopeless

• Losing interest in hobbies or social activities

• Acting out of character or feeling restless

it might be time to start a conversation with your GP or loved ones,” she says. Early intervention ensures timely care and enhances the quality of life for everyone involved.

ECH’s Conditioning Classes are designed to support your individual health in a fun group environment. Held at ECH Wellness Centres in Morphett Vale, Henley Beach, Victor Harbor, Walkerville and Modbury, these classes are led by experienced allied health professionals dedicated to your fitness journey.

Jacob, a Clinical Exercise Physiologist and Allied Health Lead at ECH, explains: “A Conditioning Class is for clients with chronic conditions or specific health concerns requiring more support and supervision. Each participant follows a tailored program designed to meet their needs, whether it’s managing arthritis, recovering from injury or improving fitness.”

What to Expect

Each participant begins with a one-hour assessment to determine their goals and needs. From there, they join regular 45-minute group classes, with everyone working on their personalised program.

“The beauty of ECH’s approach is that it’s completely individualised,” Jacob shares. “We focus on what each person needs - whether it’s improving balance, building strength or enhancing cardiovascular fitness. Programs are structured with sections for cardio, balance and strength exercises.”

Jacob adds, “For those managing conditions like diabetes, we monitor things like blood sugar levels to ensure it’s safe. If adjustments are needed during a session, we make them on the spot.”

Freddy, a wheelchair user, loves the classes: “I come three times a week—it’s really great.” For Beverley, the program has been transformative: “I had a stroke two and a half years ago. My husband signed me up to help with balance and strength. I love seeing how much I’ve improved at each annual assessment.”

Getting More out of Life with Vision ImpairmentFranca’s Story

I’m an ECH client and volunteer living with Retinitis Pigmentosa, a condition that has left me legally blind. My vision is limited to a small tunnel and I experience short-sightedness and night blindness. Despite these challenges, the support I receive from ECH helps me stay independent and active in my community.

ECH provides weekly assistance that includes cleaning, social support and transport. Their occupational therapists (OTs) have introduced me to assistive technologies like my talking air fryer and helped me learn how to use them. Over the years, I’ve also been provided with tools like a white cane, magnifiers, and a talking thermometer, all of which have made daily tasks more manageable and safer.

The social activities organised by ECH, such as group bus trips, are a highlight for me. Navigating through crowds or reading labels can be frustrating, but with the support of ECH staff, these moments become less daunting.

For those who are new to vision impairment, I encourage seeking support early. ECH tailors its assistance to your individual needs, whether it’s helping you adapt to cooking with a talking thermometer or marking buttons on appliances with raised dots. Their approach makes it possible to continue doing the activities you love in new ways.

Losing vision can feel overwhelming, but with the right support, you can maintain your independence and stay connected to your community. My advice is to embrace the help available, whether it’s assistive technology, guidance from OTs or practical support for daily life. Independence is still achievable, and you don’t have to navigate the journey alone.

Thanks to ECH, I’m living well with vision impairment and continuing to do the things that matter most to me.

Please note that this information is of a general nature only. Should you or someone you know have concerns about their vision, please seek professional medical advice.

Meet Aash Growing Community Through the ECH Community Garden

For Aash, the ECH Community Garden at Laidlaw Street, Henley Beach, became more than just a gardening project — it was a lifeline during a difficult time. Widowed at 29 with three children, she later remarried, but after 32 years, her second marriage ended, leaving her alone once again, struggling with her health and searching for purpose.

Determined to rebuild her life, Aash joined the gardening group led by Horticultural Therapist Dean. Working alongside fellow novice gardener June, Aash discovered a supportive and welcoming environment. Together, they transformed an empty plot into a lush, thriving garden with raised beds for better access, bursting with vibrant flowers and plants that attract birds and bees.

“I came into this without knowing anything about gardening,” Aash recalls. “Dean and the group made it such a welcoming and supportive environment. It became a place to chat, learn and encourage each other.”

While injuries have since limited her ability to volunteer, Ash remains connected to the garden, visiting for morning tea and the companionship of friends. She has expanded her involvement through ECH community engagement activities, attending art classes, the Stitches with Heart sewing group and Seaside Wellness sessions.

“The community groups at ECH have made such a difference,” Aash says. “Without companionship, it’s easy to feel isolated. But being part of these groups, you realise you’re not alone and life is worth living. The garden is so peaceful, with birds singing and friends by your side.”

Aash reflects on the joy of connection. “Sometimes, you must tell yourself, ‘Put your hat and coat on and get out there.’ It’s made all the difference to my health and happiness.”

“ECH has been a lifesaver,” Aash says. “The workers and volunteers are so friendly, and feeling included is wonderful.”

Through ECH’s tailored support, Aash has found community, purpose and a renewed zest for life.

Join Aash at the Henley Beach Community Garden on Wednesdays fortnightly at 10.30am, enjoy the fresh air and share a cuppa.

Hydration Made Easy Refreshing Foods to Keep You Nourished

Staying hydrated is vital during the hot summer months, but drinking enough water can be a challenge. Thirst signals often weaken as we age and some people worry about frequent bathroom trips or simply forget to sip throughout the day. Thankfully, water-rich foods can help you stay hydrated while adding delicious variety to your meals.

Hydration Heroes

Fresh summer produce is a hydration superstar. Cucumbers, tomatoes, oranges, celery, romaine lettuce, watermelon and strawberries contain over 90% water. Other refreshing options include peaches, green grapes and zucchini. Even cooked salmon, sweet potatoes and corn can contribute to your daily hydration.

Soups, yogurt, smoothies and cottage cheese are also excellent sources of fluids. For an easy hydration-friendly meal plan, try a breakfast smoothie with fresh or frozen fruit, snack

on watermelon or raw veggies, enjoy a big salad with colourful vegetables for lunch, and add chilled gazpacho or another light soup to your dinner.

How Much Water Do You Need?

In Australia’s summer heat, eatforhealth.gov.au’s guideline is for 2.1L or around eight cups per day. This includes all beverages and the fluids you get from food. A diet rich in fruits and vegetables can provide up to two cups of this total.

Check-In with Your GP

If you’re unsure about your hydration needs or have a medical condition that affects your fluid intake, it’s important to check in with your GP. They can provide personalised advice and help you create a hydration plan that fits your health requirements. Dehydration can worsen health issues, so regular consultations can help you stay on top of your health, especially in the hotter months.

Tips to Boost Fluid Intake

• Add summer favourites like citrus slices, mint or cucumber to your water

• Try chilled water with ice or a spritz of soda water for variety

• Include water-rich foods in every meal.

If you live in, visit, or travel through bushfire-prone areas, make sure you stay informed about the Fire Danger Rating each day. You can check updates on the cfs.sa.gov. au or by listening to ABC Adelaide.

In case of a Catastrophic Fire Danger Rating, ECH will contact you to reschedule any 'non essential' services to another day. For people who have essential services such as medications that need to be taken at a specific time, we will advise you of arrangements in relation to your situation.

Make sure you have a bushfire plan in place and follow local advisories. If you're unsure, call the CFS information hotline at 1800 362 361 for further guidance.

Safety During Heatwaves

Heatwaves can pose a significant risk, particularly for those with medical conditions. It is important to stay hydrated and avoid excessive time outdoors during peak heat. If extreme temperatures are forecast, ECH

may reschedule your services and will contact you in advance if changes are necessary.

The Telecross REDi service by the Australian Red Cross offers free daily check-in calls during heatwaves for people who may be vulnerable or isolated. You can register by calling 1800 188 071 .

Know Where to Get Health Advice

Dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heatstroke can be serious, especially during summer. If you're feeling unwell and can't reach your regular GP, you can call Healthdirect at 1800 022 222 for 24/7 health advice.

Power Outages

In the event of power outages during heatwaves, visit sapowernetworks.com.au outages or call 13 13 66 for updates. You can sign up for SMS alerts notifying you of any outages in your area. During power cuts, especially on very hot days, it’s crucial to stay hydrated and avoid strenuous activities. If you need to seek air-conditioned

relief, local libraries or shopping centres are great options.

Stay Active and Engaged

Despite the heat, summer is a wonderful time to enjoy outdoor activities. Just remember to take breaks, hydrate, and protect yourself from the sun. ECH recommends joining community activities like Bocce and craft workshops to stay connected and active during the summer months.

Tips to Stay Cool

• Keep your home cool by using fans or air conditioning.

• Stay indoors during the hottest part of the day.

• Drink plenty of water, even if you don't feel thirsty.

• Wear light, loose-fitting clothing.

By taking these precautions, you can enjoy a safe and healthy summer. If you have any concerns or need to reschedule ECH services during extreme weather, contact 1300 275 324
