A Note From

As we bid farewell to the long, hot summer, we’re excited to welcome the cooler weather and continue our mission of serving the community with renewed energy. At Benevilla, we are dedicated to providing a broad spectrum of life-enriching services to meet the evolving needs of those who rely on us.

Caregiving, particularly for loved ones with Dementia, is a 24/7 commitment that can be both physically and emotionally demanding. That’s why our programs are designed to support both individuals living with a diagnosis and their caregivers who are with them every step of the way.

The Benevilla C.A.R.E.S. (Community Assistance, Resources, Education & Support) department connects older adults and their families with an extensive database of resources and practical guidance on how to access them.

If you or someone you know could benefit from any of our services, we encourage you to contact our Benevilla C.A.R.E.S. resource line at (623) 526-4404. And don’t miss our upcoming Caregiver Connect event on Friday, November 8th—a great opportunity to access vital resources and connect with fellow caregivers.

In this issue, we’re also excited to share our 2023 Annual Impact Report, showcasing the many remarkable achievements of the past year. Your continued support makes everything we do possible, and we are deeply grateful for the lasting impact we’re able to create together.

Thank you for your dedication, and I look forward to all we can accomplish for our community in the days ahead.

Sincerely,

Transforming Lives with Exercise:

How Benefitness Helps Older Adults Manage Pain and Anxiety

As we age, most of us will suffer from arthritis and degenerative issues which can lead to chronic pain and physical limitations.

A 2023 article featured in the American Journal of Nursing called Managing Older Adults’ Chronic Pain: Higher-Risk Interventions reported “The prevalence of chronic pain increases with age, affecting 28% of adults ages 65 to 84 years and 34% of those 85 and older, with high-impact chronic pain (chronic pain that regularly limits daily activities).”

Group classes not only boost physical health but also enhance mental well-being by reducing stress, improving mood, and increasing self-confidence.

Many who experience chronic pain resort to opioids or other pain medications to get through each day, increasing their risk of prescription drug dependency which may lead to addiction or overdose. A 2022 AARP article, Alarming Increase in Opioid Overdose Deaths Among Older Adults reported that the opioid epidemic “is a national crisis with devastating consequences” and many addictions and overdoses start with medication that is prescribed for pain. A 2016 study conducted by the CDC on opiate guidelines, revealed that in many cases

I was trapped in a cycle of isolation and fear, but Benefitness changed my life and gave me a way out.

regular exercise can provide effective, sustained pain relief, reducing people’s dependence on opioid pain medications.

Benevilla’s Adaptive Gym, Benefitness provides customized fitness classes and personalized sessions which can help people suffering from chronic pain, physical limitations, and mobility issues while reducing their reliance on pain management medication.

Coping with mental health challenges can feel overwhelming. A 2023 study conducted by the CDC stated that approximately 25% of adults in the U.S. receive treatment for anxiety or depression. It is well-documented that exercise promotes improved mindset due to stimulating the brain to release endorphins and dopamine. These ‘happy chemicals’ may greatly help those who struggle with mental health challenges, such as anxiety or depression.

One Benefitness member lived with crippling anxiety and felt too self-conscious to step foot into a gym. She often shares how her life has been transformed since she joined Benefitness. She states how she feels that she discovered a safe, supportive environment where she could build her physical strength, improve her mental health, and form valuable friendships. It took over a year for her to gain the confidence to even sign up for Benefitness, but now she comes to classes at least three times a week. “Beneboxing” classes are her favorite but she enjoys the different choices

offered in each class or personalized session. She said, “I was trapped in a cycle of isolation and fear, but Benefitness changed my life and gave me a way out.”

In addition to helping to increase flexibility, strength, and mobility, Benefitness classes and individual sessions can help reduce pain, improve mobilitity, improve mental wellness, increase socialization and help provide a better quality of life.

SOAR into the NEW YEAR

FLY HIGH WITH YOUR ESTATE PLANNING

A new year is about to take off. It is a time for a fresh flight of new hope and clear skies. Whether you are flying to a vacation, business meetings or to see family, or if you are traveling only in your mind, the new year lies ahead. Pilots begin with a checklist, so should you. Here is a good place to start on your estate planning this year:

Write or update your will

Check with your bank and investment advisor to update your transfer on death forms

Take inventory of your highly appreciated assets and use them, rather than cash, to transfer gifts to charity

Fly high above life’s uncertainties with these ideas and others.

For example, call or email us to see how an IRA charitable rollover can help lower your taxes on IRA distributions; or how donating appreciated stock is an easy and tax-effective way for you to make a gift to Benevilla.

You will soar when you see how easy it is to lower your taxes, all while helping others. Contact the Benevilla Donor Relations team today at (623) 584-4999 or development@Benevilla.org.

A Legacy of Giving:

Fran Penry’s Commitment to Benevilla

Frances “Fran” Penry moved to Arizona in 2002 from Colorado. She and her late husband Brian retired early to Sun City West so they could enjoy sunshine and recreation. After moving to the area, they wanted to give back to the community and started volunteering at Benevilla in many capacities. Frances volunteered to help with everything from delivering hot meals to homebound adults, to helping with office work, to teaching chair yoga in our Life Enrichment programs. Fran also served as a Benevilla “Friendly Visitor” to the same Home Services member for many years, providing both friendship and companionship.

Life Enrichment Program and Chez Nous which was located at the SCW Foundation Building at the time. She also remembers eating lunch and attending volunteer and other community meetings held at Birt’s Bistro, and compiling new employee handbooks in the conference room of the newly built Surprise office.

Fran recalled many memories of her days volunteering for Benevilla over the years. She recalled the “creaky floors” in the old Benevilla main office which was housed in a building donated by the Del Webb corporation. (Pictured) The donated building served as Benevilla’s main office until the Surprise campus was completed in 2009. She remembers teaching yoga at the SCW

Not only was Fran a devoted Benevilla volunteer, she and her late husband Brian have been Benevilla donors for many years. It was important to them to help support fellow community members in need. On a recent visit to Benevilla, Fran was really impressed by the new Benefitness Adaptive Gym and loved watching the interactions taking place with the “grandmas and grandpas” from Lucy’s Anne’s Life Enrichment Program and the children from Wirtzie’s Preschool and Childcare Center. Fran said, “The programs and services Benevilla provides are so wonderful and so important to the community!” Thank you, Fran for helping and supporting Benevilla in so many ways throughout the years! We couldn’t do what we do without volunteers and donors like you!

On a recent visit, Fran Penry reflects on her time as a volunteer with Benevilla.

Bridging Generations:

Benevilla Expands Intergenerational Programing

The Benevilla Life Enrichment Day Program at Lucy Anne’s Place, which serves older adults with early to moderate forms of dementia, has integrated an intergenerational program into its daily activities for many years. The optional program connects members, fondly referred to as “grandmas and grandpas,” with children from Wirtzie’s Preschool & Child Care. Through a variety of planned activities—including arts and crafts, gardening, music, storytelling, dance, games, and entertainment—older adults and children connect in meaningful ways that stimulate their minds and senses, keeping all participants active and engaged.

PBS NewsHour Visit

In January, we were thrilled to welcome a crew from PBS NewsHour to capture the magic of one of our intergenerational sessions at Lucy Anne’s Place. The crew filmed various activities,

interviewed members and staff, and highlighted the joy and warmth created through these unique interactions.

Expanding Our Commitment to Intergenerational Connections

Benevilla continues to create opportunities for young people and older adults in our programs to connect in meaningful ways. Recently, a group of youth from the Dysart Community

Center enjoyed a pizza party at Benevilla’s Life Enrichment Program, Mary’s Place, and at their West Valley location as well.

The visitors from Dysart brought fresh energy and enthusiasm, as they mingled and engaged in conversations with our members. The visit highlighted how youth involvement fosters a spirit of giving back and emphasizes the importance of building strong community ties across generations.

We invite organizations interested in participating in intergenerational exchanges to get involved. To learn how your group can join the Benevilla Intergenerational Program, please contact Jennifer Kehren: JKehren@benevilla.org or call 623-584-4999.

Crescendo of Joy:

The West Valley Crescendo Choir Celebrates Its Debut Performance

The Crescendo Choir, part of the West Valley Life Enrichment Program, delivered a stunning performance that captivated over 70 family members and friends. The atmosphere was electric with applause, cheers, smiles, and even a few happy tears. The choir’s music resonated deeply, showcasing the power of song to uplift and connect people. Program Director Lindsey Nichols, who organized the event, remarked, “Singing has such a positive impact on each person.” Her dedication to bringing the choir together was evident in the heartfelt reactions of the audience. It was a truly memorable event, celebrating the joy and community that music brings.

Give To Benevilla, Get It Back

Your donations can be applied to your 2024 Arizona state tax return and receive a dollar-for-dollar tax credit up to $938 ($470 if filing single).

Your donation will directly support older adults, adults with disabilities, and families in your local community.

What is a State Tax Credit?

• Your state tax liability is the total amount of tax you owe the state on your income. It is a percentage of your taxable income.

• A state tax credit lowers your tax liability. Unlike deductions, which reduce your taxable income, state tax credits reduce your state tax liability by the amount you donate.

• State tax credits are taken when you file your Arizona personal tax return, resulting in either less taxes owed or a larger refund.

BUILDING A STRONGER, MORE

Benevilla has spent decades enriching lives across the west valley, offering compassionate programs for older adults, adults with disabilities, children, and their families. Rooted in caring and connection, Benevilla’s services provide more than practical support—they create a thriving community for all ages.

Life Enrichment Day Programs: Meaningful Connections for Older Adults and Adults with Special Needs

Family caregivers often face the demanding challenge of balancing their own lives with the needs of their loved ones. Our unique Life Enrichment Day Programs, Lucy Anne’s Place, Mary’s Place, and West Valley, offer a warm and welcoming solution. These programs provide more than just respite for caregivers; they create a vibrant environment where older adults with dementias, intellectual disabilities, stroke survivors,

and those living with diagnosis like Parkinson’s Disease can engage in enriching activities.

The Benevilla Intergenerational Program, woven across all three of its Life Enrichment Programs, is a heartwarming initiative that brings together older adults, adults with disabilities, and youth in meaningful, shared experiences. Individuals enrolled in our Life Enrichment Programs are invited to participate in activities alongside children from Wirtzie’s Preschool & Child Care or local youth groups. The unique interactions foster a deep sense of connection, as generations share moments of joy, learning, and compassion. The program encourages empathy, boosts self-esteem for all generations, and creates a special sense of purpose, where all members feel valued and engaged.

Home Services:

Bringing Friendship and Independence to Older Adults

For older adults who find themselves homebound, isolated, or in need of assistance, Benevilla’s Home Services program offers a lifeline. Powered by a dedicated team of volunteers, this program provides essential services like transportation to medical appointments, grocery shopping, light handyman tasks, and friendly companionship. Our volunteers bring not only practical help but also the gift of human connection, easing loneliness and restoring a sense of independence.

A ride to an appointment, or help with errands can make an enormous difference, allowing older adults to live with dignity and remain in their own homes.

Wirtzie’s Preschool & Child Care: Nurturing Young Minds and Hearts

Serving children from six weeks to five years old, Wirtzie’s offers a comprehensive, accredited

curriculum that balances structured learning with the natural joy of discovery through play. Every day is filled with opportunities for children to explore their surroundings, develop social skills, and engage in hands-on activities that foster cognitive, emotional, and physical development.

A unique feature of the program is its intergenerational component. Through structured activities, the children spend time with older adults at Lucy Anne’s Place, fostering a deep sense of empathy, understanding, and connection.

Benefitness Adaptive Gym: A Place of Empowerment for All Abilities

Health and wellness are universal needs, but for individuals with special considerations or ongoing clinical conditions, finding the right fitness program can be a challenge. Benevilla’s Benefitness Adaptive Gym is designed to meet these needs head-on, offering specialized fitness instruction tailored to each individual’s abilities and goals.

Through use of adapted equipment, one-onone coaching or group classes, the dedicated team at Benefitness helps members build strength, confidence, and community. The gym isn’t just a place to work out—it’s a place where every individual is empowered to live their healthiest life

Whether supporting older adults, guiding families, or teaching children empathy, Benevilla makes a lasting impact. Your support has been essential in continuing this mission of providing vital services that strengthen the community.

Sessions provide guidance on safe approaches to back care and physical stability.

TRAILBLAZING RECOGNITION

Benevilla was honored to be the inaugural recipient of the City of Surprise Legend Award. Joanne Byers, President & CEO and Pastor Kim Sterner, Board Chair, accepted the award at the 2023 Surprise Area Interfaith & Golden Rule Community Breakfast.

CREATING A SAFER COMMUNITY

TEAMING UP TO SUPPORT BENEVILLA

Benevilla received a grant from the Maricopa County Department of Public Health to improve emergency preparedness for older adults in the Northwest Valley. We formed a coalition of nonprofits, civic leaders, and faith groups to strengthen coordination with emergency managers and promote preparedness. This year-long effort also culminated in an April 2024 expo featuring speakers from state and local agencies. Video presentations and resources are available on our website.

PARTNERING FOR IMPACT

Lisa Minette, Sr. Director of Enrichment at Benevilla, appeared on Arizona Daily Mix with Bruce Elliott, Co-Founder and CEO of Memory Lane Games, to share the impact of their app’s use with our members. This app enhances cognitive stimulation with a simple, customizable interface for personal photos or topics (e.g., 1950s, 60s music, hometowns). Thanks to a generous grant from Thunderbirds Charities, we’re able to offer this valuable technology.

MAGIC IN MOTION

The Sun City West Witches Ride fundraiser raised over $13,000 for Benevilla. The kind-hearted Sun City West residents doned their finest witch attire and decorate their golf carts –or bicycles for the festive event.

Benevilla proudly hosted the ‘Golfing Fore Good’ tournament. Thanks to the generosity of our participants and sponsors, all proceeds directly supported our mission of enriching lives and making a meaningful impact in our community.

PARTNERING FOR GOOD

2023 Benevilla Community Leadership Award Honoree

Lord of Life Lutheran Church Mission Endowment was awarded the 2023 Benevilla Community Leadership Award at a special awards dinner in November. Benevilla has been blessed with a strong relationship with the Lord of Life Lutheran Church in Sun City West since the mid-1980s. They have supported Benevilla in so many ways. Through funds received from the Lord of Life Lutheran Church Mission Endowment Fund, we have been able to remodel Life Enrichment Adult Day program spaces, create Caregiver Relaxation areas in our Benefitness Adaptive Gym, and continue to provide Benevilla Caregiver Support Groups and CARES programming. They have graciously provided space for Benevilla Caregiver Support Groups and other caregiver

events in the past, and have even provided volunteers to sit with loved ones while support groups take place. The church’s leadership has actively supported Benevilla through their participation on our Board of Directors and committees over the years. We are deeply grateful for Lord of Life’s support, partnership, and friendship which helps us both to better serve our local community.

A LEGACY OF LEADERSHIP

2023 Bill Wolfrey Community Service Award Honoree

Ron and Lori Jensen were awarded the 2023 Benevilla Bill Wolfrey Community Service Award which is named in memory of one of the founding members of Benevilla. This award is presented to an individual or couple each year for their outstanding commitment, support, and service to Benevilla, as well as to our community.

Ron and Lori have supported Benevilla with both time and treasure for over 16 years. Ron is a horticultural expert and brought those unique skills to Benevilla by serving as a volunteer expert in the Surprise Community Garden for many years. In this role, he was instrumental in facilitating onsite gardening and horticulture classes for students with learning challenges from the Dysart School District. Ron has also served on several Benevilla committees which assisted with planning and promoting Benevilla fundraising events. Lori previously participated in Benevilla’s Circle of Caring Friends auxiliary group, which helped raise funds for Benevilla through community events. She currently serves on the Benevilla President Awards Committee each year reviewing staff nominees for this prestigious award. They are both active in the community and are very involved at Lord of Life Lutheran Church.

Ron and Lori are Benevilla Legacy Circle Members, as they have listed Benevilla in their estate plans to ensure our programs and services are available into the future. When asked why they chose to support Benevilla in their estate plans they responded,

“We have seen the results of their [Benevilla’s] work and have heard so many stories of the comfort afforded to spouses and families while their loved ones were being cared for. Wonderful changes have taken place because people gave gifts that made a lasting impression on the future. We wanted to be part of the plan to keep this organization going strong. Some choices in life are hard and others are easy. Leaving something for Benevilla to use in the future was certainly an easy choice to make.”

Congratulations and thank you Ron & Lori for your current support and as well helping support generations to come!

Please consider leaving a lasting legacy to Benevilla as a recipient in your will or estate plan. To learn more, please contact Sara Villanueva, Vice President of Donor Relations at 623-584-4999 or svillanueva@benevilla.org

VETERAN SPOTLIGHT

Dennis Schaefer’s military journey began in 1960 when he joined the Army at just 17 years old. After completing basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, he embarked on a two-decade military career that took him across the globe. His early years were spent in Crailsheim, Germany, where he honed his skills in medical records, a field he would grow to love.

Throughout his service, Dennis bounced between Colorado and Germany, but a notable chapter of his career unfolded in Saigon during the Vietnam War, where he served at a military hospital. The final years of his service brought him to Schofield Barracks in Hawaii, where he transitioned to Field Artillery and embraced the island’s beautiful weather and vibrant culture. He retired as an E-7, leaving behind a legacy of dedication and commitment.

Originally from Edwardsville, Illinois, Dennis found joy in both his work and travels. He cherished his time in Nuremberg, Germany, captivated by its rich World War II history. After retiring from the Army, he settled in Phoenix, where he continued his passion for medical records. Dennis worked at several hospitals and medical facilities, including the VA, while earning his degree in Medical Records from Phoenix College in 1984.

Married and proud father of five, Dennis Schaefer’s life is a testament to service, resilience, and a commitment to making a difference in the lives of others.

Dennis is a member of the Benevilla West Valley Life Enrichment Program. He is one of many veterans we are honored to have in our programs.
