As we welcome the spring season, we are energized and inspired to continue our mission of serving the community. At Benevilla, we remain dedicated to providing a broad spectrum of life-enriching services that meet the evolving needs of those who rely on us.
This spring, we are thrilled to celebrate the 30th anniversary of our West Valley Life Enrichment Program. For three decades, this vital program has provided meaningful engagement, social connection, and compassionate care for older adults—enhancing their quality of life and fostering a deep sense of belonging in our community, while also providing respite for the members caregiver and families.
We also recognize the importance of supporting caregivers through our ongoing support groups. Caring for a loved one, navigating grief, or rebuilding life after loss can feel overwhelming—but no one has to go through it alone. Benevilla’s support groups provide a safe space where individuals can share experiences, gain insight, and find comfort among others who understand their journey.
If you or a loved one could benefit from a support group, we invite you to visit our website to explore our current offerings. Wherever you are on your journey, these groups offer understanding, encouragement, and hope. In community, healing begins.
I look forward to all that lies ahead as we work to strengthen and uplift our community.

Growing Together:
The Surprise Community Garden Bridges Generations
Located on the Benevilla campus, a vibrant space of greenery and growth brings people of all ages together. The Surprise Community Garden isn’t just a place for planting fruits, vegetables, and flowers— it’s a hub of connection, learning, and shared joy. The Surprise Community Garden, opened in 2012, is a Community For All Ages (CFAA) program led by Benevilla in partnership with the City of Surprise and Rio Salado College. Among the garden’s many caretakers are two special groups: the young children of Wirtzie’s Preschool & Child Care and the older adults of Lucy Anne’s Place Life Enrichment Program. Together, they nurture their own garden plots, forming bonds that go beyond the soil.
For the children of Wirtzie’s, the garden is a place of discovery. With tiny hands eagerly digging in the dirt, they learn about the life cycle of plants, the importance of healthy food, and the patience required for things to grow. Their excitement is contagious as they watch seedlings sprout and proudly show off their harvests. Meanwhile, the members of Lucy Anne’s Place find joy in sharing their knowledge, offering guidance on planting techniques, and reminiscing about gardens they once tended.
This intergenerational experience fosters a deep sense of purpose and belonging. Older adults,

many of whom live with Alzheimer’s or other cognitive challenges, benefit from the therapeutic nature of gardening—engaging their senses, stimulating memory, and encouraging movement. At the same time, children gain valuable life lessons in responsibility, empathy, and respect for nature.
The Surprise Community Garden is more than just a collection of plots; it’s a testament to the power of community. Here, generations grow together—one seed, one lesson, and one shared moment at a time.
The Surprise Community Garden offers 4x8 and 6x20-foot garden beds and is open to local residents of surrounding communities. To reserve your garden bed or learn more, visit: Benevilla.org/community-garden
If you believe in investing in the future of your community, but don’t want to part with money today, a gift in your will or trust to benefit Benevilla may be the donation option you’ve been looking for. It has these benefits:
• Simplicity. Just a few sentences in your will or trust are all that is needed.
• Flexibility. Because you are not actually making a gift until after your lifetime, you can change your mind at any time.
• Versatility. You can structure your gift to leave a specific item or amount of money, make it contingent on certain events or leave Benevilla a percentage of your estate.
• Tax Relief. When you make a gift to Benevilla, a qualified charitable organization, in your will or trust, your estate may be entitled to an estate tax charitable deduction for the gift’s full value, reducing taxes for your heirs and your estate.
Tailored Fitness: How Benefitness Adaptive Gym Personal Training Sessions Aid
Chronic Conditions
Benefitness Adaptive Gym serves those in our community with different abilities, special considerations and ongoing clinical needs. Unlike traditional gyms, Benefitness offers tailored programs, specialized equipment, and expert guidance to improve strength, mobility, and overall well-being.
Imagine waking up each day knowing that the activities you once struggled with—getting out of a chair, climbing stairs, or reaching for something overhead—are becoming easier and more manageable. Picture yourself feeling stronger, moving with confidence, and reclaiming your independence, all with the guidance of a personal trainer who truly understands your unique needs.
Common Neurological Conditions
For individuals with MS, even small improvements in mobility can be life-changing. At Benefitness, our trainers focus on low-impact routines designed to strengthen the body while respecting its limits. Stretching and mobility exercises can improve range of motion, reducing muscle stiffness.
My life has completely changed because what I couldn’t do before now comes naturally.

Conditions such as Parkinson’s Disease, often leads to difficulties in movement and balance. Our highly trained coaches, specializing in adaptive fitness for neurological conditions, design exercises to improve gait, enhance coordination, reduce the risk of falls, and improve the ability to perform tasks related to daily living.
Resistance training and assisted stretch can help counteract muscle stiffness and weakness, which are common Parkinson’s symptoms. Benefitness also includes exercises that stimulate cognitive function, which may be beneficial given Parkinson’s impact on the brain.
Regular exercise has been shown to alleviate symptoms including spasticity, which is common in individuals with MS.
Stroke Survivors
After a stroke, many individuals experience muscle weakness or partial paralysis. This may be temporary or permanent. With expertise in poststroke rehabilitation, our personal trainers create customized programs that help rebuild strength and retrain the brain-muscle connection. Focused exercises on functional movements can significantly enhance the ability to perform everyday tasks.
Stroke survivors may also benefit from cardiovascular exercises that support heart health and reduce the risk of subsequent strokes.
Personal Training for Injury Recovery
Once discharged from physical therapy, Benefitness training staff can continue participant progress by customizing a training routine to further reach and sustain individual goals.
Through targeted assisted stretching and strengthening exercises, personal training can restore joint and muscle function after injuries such as sprains, fractures, or surgeries. Research

supports that regular exercise, that is guided by qualified professionals, can greatly reduce chronic pain by improving strength, joint range of motion, improving circulation, and reducing inflammation.
Benefitness personal trainers strive to educate clients on proper movement mechanics and body awareness to reduce the likelihood of future injuries.
Emotional Well-being
For individuals with chronic conditions or injuries, the advantages of personal training extend beyond physical improvements.
Mood and mindset may also improve with regular exercise due to released endorphins, dopamine production, and oxygen uptake. Existing and emerging research supports that exercise is well known to combat anxiety and depression, reduce stress, and improve overall mental outlook.
At Benefitness, our expert coaches serve as motivators and emotional allies by leveraging their deep understanding of adaptive fitness and person-centered care to help clients reclaim their confidence and sense of accomplishment. Training sessions provide a safe space for meaningful interactions, which may combat feelings of loneliness and isolation.
Personal training can empower individuals with chronic conditions or injuries with the opportunity to improve their health and well-being through tailored, and safe exercises. Exercise enhances physical abilities, emotional resilience, and overall quality of life, offering a structured, supportive path to recovery and condition management.

A Legacy of Transforming Lives
The West Valley Life Enrichment Program Turns 30
This year marks a significant milestone as we celebrate the 30th anniversary of our West Valley Life Enrichment Program, dedicated to enhancing the lives of older adults living with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias, as well as adults with disabilities including stroke, fall-related injuries, and cognitive impairment. For three decades, our program has been a beacon of hope, compassion, and innovation, providing personalized support, meaningful engagement, and a sense of belonging to individuals and their families.
Throughout these 30 years, our program has evolved to meet the unique needs of each member, ensuring dignity, respect, and joy remain at the heart of everything we do.
Join us as we honor this remarkable journey, reflect on the lives touched, and look forward to continuing our mission of enriching lives for generations to come.
I had the privilege on so many levels to work toward enriching the lives of hundreds of caregivers and their loved ones.
— Darlene
Turner, West Valley Program Director 1996-2018
The Early Years: A Vision Takes Root
In its first year, the program enrolled a total of nine families and operated with a small but dedicated staff of four: a full-time Supervisor, a part-time Registered Nurse, a full-time Activity Therapist, and a part-time Health Aide. The only technology available at the time was a cordless phone—no computers, fax machines, or cell phones to streamline operations. Despite these limitations, the program’s mission was clear: to provide high-quality care and enrichment for those who needed it most.
Initially, there were no formal contracts with the Veterans Administration (VA), Area Agency on Aging, or the Department of Developmental Disabilities (DDD). However, within two years of opening, the program secured contracts with the Area Agency on Aging, followed by the enrollment of members from the DDD, significantly expanding its reach and impact.
The Crescendo Choir had it’s debut performance in September 2024. Family members and friends attended the event which included music and movement .
Opening Minds through Art (OMA), brought members in the West Valley program together with Midwestern University students through art-making. The program culminated with an art show and auction of members original artwork to bid, as well as reproductions on cards available for purchase.
Breaking New Ground: A Mixed Population Approach
West Valley made history by becoming one of the first adult day programs to serve both senior-aged individuals and younger adults with disabilities. This inclusive model ensured that all members received the care and engagement they needed, regardless of age or background.
As the program expanded, so did its services. A transportation department was established to help families who needed assistance getting to and from the center. Shortly after, a community outings component was introduced, adding a new dimension to the activity calendar and enriching members’ experiences beyond the program’s walls.
individuals can engage in meaningful activities, socialize, and receive personalized care. With a commitment to innovation and excellence, West Valley remains a model for adult day programs, proving that quality care and enrichment can make a lasting impact on the lives of individuals and their families.
“Our commitment to providing compassionate care and meaningful engagement has never wavered,” says Lindsey Nichols, current Program Director of the West Valley Life Enrichment Program. “This program is more than just a service—it’s a community that fosters connection, dignity, and purpose for every member. We are honored to continue this legacy and look forward to serving families for years to come.”
As we celebrate this remarkable 30-year journey, we honor the dedicated staff, supportive families, and vibrant members who have made the West Valley Life Enrichment Program what it is today. Here’s to many more years of enriching lives and fostering community connections!

The Power of Presence: The Transformative
Power of Volunteering
Volunteering in a life enrichment day program for individuals with dementia is more than just giving your time—it’s an opportunity to make a meaningful impact, build connections, and uplift your community. At Benevilla, volunteers are the heart and hands of our mission, forming a compassionate safety net of “neighbors helping neighbors” and enriching the lives of hundreds each year.
Our life enrichment day programs offer creative and rewarding ways to engage with members, fostering joy, dignity, and connection. Whether sharing a talent, assisting with activities, or simply offering companionship, volunteers play a vital role in enhancing the experiences of those we serve.
“My mom, who lives in Pennsylvania, is in the early stages of dementia, and since I am unable to be there, I felt inspired to help in my own community.”
Volunteering at Benevilla has been one of the most rewarding experiences in my life.
— David C. Benevilla Volunteer
The impact of volunteering extends beyond those receiving care—it transforms the lives of those who give their time and energy. Many volunteers experience personal growth, new friendships, and a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by individuals living with dementia.
“After taking a tour of Benevilla, I was so impressed by the organization and the incredible work being done in the life enrichment program,” says volunteer Colleen F..
“Volunteering at Benevilla has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life,” says David C., a volunteer at Lucy Anne’s Place. “I wish I had started sooner.” David enjoys spending time with members, listening to their stories, and seeking opportunities for connection.
Activities in the life enrichment day programs include music and art therapy, guided exercise, memory-enhancing games, meal service, and one-on-one conversations. Volunteers help make these experiences engaging and accessible by sharing their unique skills and passions, bringing joy and stimulation to members.
Beyond direct member engagement, volunteers provide essential support in other areas. Some assist with administrative tasks, organize events, or contribute to fundraising efforts that sustain Benevilla’s mission. This

variety of opportunities allows individuals of all backgrounds and skill levels to get involved in meaningful ways.
Many volunteers also dedicate their time to the Benevilla Home Services program, which pairs volunteers with community members needing extra assistance to remain independent at home. Volunteers offer rides to medical appointments, help with grocery shopping, provide light home maintenance, offer companionship, and assist with businessrelated tasks.
At Benevilla, volunteers are more than helpers—they are an essential part of a supportive and caring community. Their contributions ensure that every member
feels valued, engaged, and connected. As the need for dementia care grows, so does the importance of compassionate individuals willing to make a difference.

VETERAN SPOTLIGHT
Rudolph “Rudy” Mogush, affectionately known as “Moggy” during his service, grew up in Baltimore, Maryland. In the summer of 1959, he found himself without a job. As fate would have it, while stepping off a city bus one day, he noticed an Army recruiting station. On a whim, he walked in—and just 30 days later, he was a soldier in the United States Army.
Rudy’s decision to enlist came as a surprise to his family, especially his mother, who humorously warned him, “If you die, I’ll kill you!” To this day, Rudy chuckles when recalling her reaction.
Wanting a skill that would serve him well after his enlistment, Rudy trained as a forklift operator. During his time in Vietnam, he was stationed just 12 miles from the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ). Fortunately, he was never shot at and never had to fire his rifle—a fact he is proud to share.
His two years in the Army were eye-opening. He met people from all over the country, noticing that many of his fellow soldiers came from the Midwest or California, while few, like himself, were from the East Coast. His experiences in the military changed him, making him more alert, more serious about life’s challenges, and more compassionate toward others after witnessing the hardships of war.
Rudy encourages young people to consider military service, believing it provides invaluable life experience and a solid foundation for the future—all while serving the country.
We thank Rudy for his service and for sharing his incredible story with us.
Rudy is a member of The Benevilla Mary’s Place Life Enrichment Program. He is one of many veterans we are honored to have in our programs.
