As spring gives way to summer and the coast comes alive, we’re reminded just how special it is to do what we do, designing, building, and caring for homes in this vibrant community.
This season marks 22 years of Tongue & Groove, and that milestone is only possible because of your dedication. Every home we create or maintain is a testament to your talent, care, and commitment to excellence.
We’re proud to be producing our best work yet — pushing the boundaries of design while expanding our services beyond the build. Together, we’re not just building homes; we’re creating lasting experiences of comfort, connection, and inspiration.
Thank you for the role you play in shaping our story. We can’t wait to see what’s next.
Enjoy the season ahead.

NETFLIX & CHILL
72 Pelican Drive in Netflix’s The Waterfrontt
We’re excited to share that one of our custom-built homes, 72 Pelican Drive in Wrightsville Beach, appears in Netflix’s newly released family crime drama, The Waterfront! Filmed right here in the Wilmington area, The Waterfront showcases a variety of familiar scenes from Wrightsville Beach, downtown Wilmington, and surrounding coastal neighborhoods. As the Buckley family’s story unfolds, keep your eyes peeled for iconic local landmarks, and maybe even a glimpse of our craftsmanship on Pelican Drive.
EXPLORING THE FUTURE OF DESIGN
2 at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair
This May, T&G leaders Mark Batson, Kathy Glynn, Matt Petr, and Josh Aylett attended the International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF) in New York City. ICFF is North America’s leading event for contemporary design. With over 450 brands and 10,000 industry professionals, the show offered fresh insight into global trends, innovation, and sustainability. The team returned inspired and ready to infuse new ideas into the T&G design experience.

VASTU ARCHITECTURE
Designing with Energy in Mind at 1140 Vanderhorst Way
We’re currently building a custom home in Landfall inspired by the ancient principles of Vastu Shastra, a traditional Indian architectural style that harmonizes natural elements and directional flow to promote peace, health, and prosperity.
This has been a unique and rewarding design challenge for our team, as we thoughtfully align each space with Vastu’s elemental guidance, bringing together timeless philosophy and modern luxury in a truly one-of-a-kind home.

RICK’S PICKS
WITH RICK ELLIOTT, DIRECTOR OF CONSTRUCTION
In every build, the difference between good and exceptional lies in the details. It’s the kind of work that doesn’t always show up in a final photo, but you feel it in the experience of the home — how it flows, how it functions, and how it holds up over time. Below are a few standouts from the field this quarter — materials we’re leaning into, techniques we’re refining, and lessons that continue to shape how we build with precision and purpose.
Trustile Doors: Flexible Design, Solid Presence
We’ve been incorporating more Trustile doors across our builds, and they’re quickly becoming a go-to. What sets them apart isn’t just their clean aesthetic or solid-core construction — it’s their versatility. These doors offer flexibility in tight spaces and are particularly effective in pocket door applications. When square footage is at a premium or the architectural flow calls for something seamless, a Trustile pocket door becomes the perfect solution. It allows us to preserve clean lines and eliminate swing clearance without compromising quality or style. It’s a small detail that creates a big difference in the rhythm of a home.
Plumbing Placement: Know the Flow
This one might not make headlines, but it’s essential: where your plumbing is placed impacts the performance of your entire home. We always prioritize thoughtful placement early in the process, especially when planning around distant wings, guest spaces, or detached structures. The farther the fixture is from the main water supply, the more likely you are to see drops in water pressure. Our goal is consistent, responsive pressure throughout — no surprises, no delays. Good plumbing design is invisible, which is exactly the point. It works because we
think through the layout long before tile goes in.
Steel Framing: Setting the Stage
At 322 South Lumina, we’re using steel framing to unlock views and volume that wouldn’t be possible with traditional materials. Steel gives us the ability to push past structural lim-
itations, opening up spans, cantilevering dramatic overhangs, and framing large expanses of glass that bring the outdoors in. It’s not just about strength; it’s about freedom. The freedom to design boldly, to let the structure support the story we’re trying to tell with the home. Especially on oceanfront properties, where views are paramount and wind loads are intense, steel allows us to deliver both beauty and resilience.
Take the Time: Craft Over Convenience
One principle that guides everything we do: take the time to get it right. It’s easy to rush to the next phase — to assume close enough is good enough — but we’ve learned again and again that patience pays off. Whether we’re fine-tuning a tricky corner return, rerouting plumbing to boost efficiency, or collaborating with architects on a last-minute design shift, the work that happens in those quiet, in-between moments often defines the entire project. True craftsmanship means slowing down when necessary, making space for the unexpected, and investing in the details others might overlook. That’s where excellence lives, not in shortcuts, but in the commitment to doing it right.
ELEVATED PRESENCE
HOW TO RESPOND TO KEY SCENARIOS
SCENARIO 1:
Client asks why their Property Services project hasn’t started yet.
COMPLAINT
“I submitted a project request recently, and I haven’t seen any progress. Why hasn’t anyone started my project?”
ELEVATED RESPONSE
“Thank you for your patience. Your project is in our queue, and our team is carefully scheduling each phase to ensure the same level of detail and attention we bring to every T&G home. We’ll be reaching out shortly with an updated timeline and next steps.”
When in doubt: stay calm, acknowledge the client’s concerns, and present a simple solution. You’ve got this!
HOW TO DRESS FOR SUCCESS
How we present ourselves reflects the pride we take in our work. Whether you’re in the office, on a job site, or attending a client-facing event, dressing appropriately is a key part of upholding our brand and the high standards we’re known for. T&G-approved clothing includes:
T&G collared shirts, jackets, & other company gear
Business casual attire: shirts tucked in, clean shoes, and a fresh, clean-cut appearance
SCENARIO 2:
Client is suprised by the cost of a design revision.
OBSERVATION
“This seems really expensive just to change a few things. Why am I being charged so much?”
ELEVATED RESPONSE
“We understand how important these updates are to you and appreciate you bringing up your concerns. The cost reflects the added design time and coordination needed to ensure seamless integration with your overall vision. That said, we’re happy to walk you through what’s included and will take a closer look to confirm all charges are accurate. Our goal is to ensure you’re only paying for what’s necessary, and that you feel confident every step of the way.”
