On Saturday the club’s Chairman Dave Whelan leads his team out at Wembley to play in the FA Cup Final against Manchester City, with the chance to complete unfinished business from his appearence in an FA Cup Final for Blackburn Rovers in 1960, when the unlucky full back was stretchered off in the first half with a broken leg, Rovers losing 3-0 to Wolves on the day.

Now the Latics squad under mercurial manager Roberto Martinez have the chance to pay the club’s saviour and mentor back big time by giving him the chance to hold the famous trophy aloft.

Wiganers will flock in their thousands to Wembley at the weekend, knowing that they start as underdogs against the expensive Manchester City squad, but knowing also that in a one-off game like this, anything could happen....and there are rumours that firm plans are in place for a triumphal reception for the squad put in place by our optimistic town hall team and councillors...

But before we get to Wembley, there’s the matter of the relegation fight in the Premiership, with Swansea at home on May 7th, Arsenal away on May 14th and then what could be the decider, Villa at home on May 19th.

Hearts in mouths then, but every success to the boys in blue and their steadfast Chairman - go get ‘em Latics!

TWO BUDDING young make-up artists studying at Wigan & Leigh College have had their work featured in two television adverts.

WIGAN Borough Councillors, Mark and Karen Aldred, presented the Mayor of Wigan with a cheque worth £1,143 for her charity, Pensioners Link.

Mark Aldred, Councillor of Atherleigh ward, and Karen Aldred, Councillor of Atherton ward, raised the money thanks to charity event, Door to Door Santa.

Door to Door Santa was set up by Mr John Aldred, Mark’s father, more than ten years ago. Sadly, John has now passed away but his son, daughter-in-law and grandchildren are continuing his charity work.

For £7 Door to Door Santa provides a letter, reindeer dust, and a present per child. Santa Claus may also visit your house (minimum of four children per household).

In 2012, Mark and Karen, along with their son and daughter, raised money for Mayor of Wigan, Councillor Myra Whiteside’s chairty, Pensioners Link, through the Door to Door Santa. The charity organisation supports people over 50 and carers in Wigan Borough to maintain their independence and well being.

Thanks to the Aldred family, more than £15,000 has been raised for different charities throughout the last ten years.

This year the Door to Door Santa will take place across Wigan Borough, but will also take in Bolton areas as well.

Anja Coleman, 18, from Standish, and Rebecca Quinn, 22 from Wigan, who are on the Level 4 Beauty Therapy Management Course, were given the opportunity to work with top freelance high-end television make-up artist, Amanda Gaffey on projects for the Co-op and fashion retailer Curvissa.

Both students got to experience the fast-paced world of TV advertising, and worked on the hair and makeup of actors, and fashion models for the commercials, which are now being aired.

Rebecca impressed Amanda so much that she commissioned the student to work on a photographic fashion shoot, and the professional make-up artist is trying to locate a traineeship in the television sector for when Rebecca finishes her college course.

Amanda said: “The high standard of work both Anja and Rebecca displayed was excellent, and this is testament to the standard of teaching they’ve received at Wigan & Leigh College.

“I would have no hesitation in taking any of the students from Wigan & Leigh College into the work place with me in future.”

Dukes return from Afghan front line

JOB DONE: Corporal Andrew O’Donohue was welcomed home by his four year-old daughter Poppy and his wife Gemma at Catterick Garrison.

SOLDIERS from the North West have returned from Afghanistan, completing their six month mission in Lashkar Gah, the capital of Helmand province. The last 91 soldiers of the 1st Battalion of The Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment (1 LANCS), which recruits from across our region, were welcomed home by their families at a ceremony on the unit’s base in Catterick, North Yorkshire.

Corporal Andrew O’Donohue, 32, of Wigan, was welcomed home by his four year-old daughter Poppy and his wife Gemma. He said: “It’s good to see my family again after six months, these are exciting times.”

Sadly, one Dukes soldier was killed during the operation. Kingsman David Shaw, 23, of Barrow, who died at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham in January from wounds he sustained in Afghanistan.

Lt Colonel Nick Wood, the Commanding Officer of 1 LANCS, said: “I’m extremely proud of the role my soldiers performed in Lashkar Gah. Their

Around 430 Dukes soldiers served on this deployment, which was known as Herrick 17, under the command of 4 Mechanised Brigade.

During their six months working with the Afghan Police they brought continued security and development to the Afghan people in our area.

“The loss of Kingsman Shaw, who fought so bravely and fiercely, was deeply felt by all in the 1st Battalion The Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment. Our thoughts remain with his family, particularly now as we welcome the last of our soldiers home.”

With the UK combat mission expected to be completed by the end of 2014, it is likely that this was the last deployment by 1 LANCS to Afghanistan. However the 2nd Battalion of the Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment (2 LANCS), which also recruits from the North West, has just deployed around 400 soldiers to the country for six

Green agenda

THE NORTH West Green Party are proposing a New Green Deal that would put 100,000 young people into skilled employment across the region. Peter Cranie, the Green Party’s lead candidate in the North West region for the 2014 European Parliament elections, said: "The banks have already had £375 billion of newly created money, which isn’t doing anything to help real people here in the North West. Now the governor of the Bank of England is proposing a further £25 billion injection.

"We believe that should go directly into local economies to help get people back into work. Green Deal jobs would be local, skilled and sustainable."

Sir, As part of our citizenship course we are doing a project which is asking us to research a citizenship topic that has both a national and local interest. The topic which we are interested in is recycling as there are a lot of issues that we can research and raise awareness of in our local community.

Furthermore there are a lot of discussions about new recycling systems such as the almost constant change in the bin system which some people may find confusing due to the everchanging bin collection times which may also be deemed as irrelevant for people who feel that better collection times are needed.

For our project we hope to raise awareness for the need to recycle amongst the younger generation. We feel the younger generation do not fully understand why we should make the effort to recycle. Therefore, we would like to encourage any local businesses who are interested in recycling, to promote it within local schools throughout the Wigan borough. They could do this by possibly handing out leaflets which will engage the younger people of our community.

If anyone has any ideas we would be glad to help out.

Helping stroke victims

From: Mr Colin Brook Sir, Earlier this month Baroness Thatcher passed away after suffering a stroke. She was just one of the 150,000 people who have a stroke each year in the UK – that’s a shocking one person every five minutes. In fact stroke is the third biggest killer in the UK. But the people who survive strokes often end up with permanent disabilities. More than 250,000 people in the UK are living with severe disabilities caused by a stroke.

Many stroke survivors find it extremely costly and difficult to organise a break even for just a few days because of their complicated

care needs.

As a result, around a third of all people with disabilities have never been able to take a break since they became disabled. This means that their carers are also in desperate need of relief and run the very real risk of becoming disabled themselves.

I work for Vitalise, a national charity providing essential respite breaks for people with disabilities and carers. We run the Sandpipers respite break centre in Southport. Each year we welcome thousands of people with disabilities and carers to take much-needed breaks with us.

MRS Florence Mary Charlton was born on 24th April 1913 in Liverpool where she lived in the Lodge Lane and Wavertree areas for 98 years until moving to Lakeside Care Home in Standish in 2011.

At the height of the 2nd World War in 1942 Florence married Robert Wheeler, ‘my Bob’ as she always calls him, and they had four children, Robert, Florence, Norman and Edward. Although widowed in 1952, Florrie worked tirelessly to bring up her young family. The house was always full of fun and laughter along with the occasional stern work and Florrie watched with pleasure and pride as her family thrived.

She now has 9 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren who all love her to bits. Her greatest pleasure has always been when her family visit her.

Worsley Hall kids make fundraising tribute Courier

BIG-HEARTED children and young people in Worsley Hall have pulled out all the stops to help two people who are coming to terms with cancer.

Members of The Meadows Youth Centre steering group have risen to the challenge of raising money for an extremely worthy cause for one and helping a wish come true for another.

The group, all aged between eight and 25, felt they had to do something when they discovered that Derek Myers, the grandfather of group member Shannon Myers had been diagnosed with cancer.

They also discovered that another local resident, Sean Fleming had also been diagnosed with a form of the disease. Determined to help, the children and young people have responded by helping to raise funds on their behalf.

For Mr Myers, the young people are helping him to fulfil a lifelong wish of taking a ride on a steam train. While Sean asked for money for The Christie Hospital in Manchester where he has received much of his treatment.

The group recently held an Easter-themed extravaganza at The Meadows complete with stalls selling cakes, toys, books and clothes. There was music and entertainment from a DJ, a treasure hunt and loads of Easter games.

The group is being supported by Wigan Council’s Voice and Engagement (Youth Service). Youth Worker Scott Williams explained: “When the group heard about Sean and Mr Myers they felt they had to do something to help. They have been working hard to plan this fundraising event and have put a

lot of time and effort into making it a success.

“All the ideas have come from the young people and they have really led the way in making this event a huge success. We are all really proud of what they have achieved.”

Mr Myers granddaughter Shannon, 16, was there on the day working hard behind the toy stall.

“My granddad has always wanted to ride on a steam train,” she said. “When we heard he was ill we decided to help to make it happen for him.

Everyone at The Meadows has been really fantastic.

They’ve all given up their own time to do this and it looks like we actually might make it happen. It’s great that they have helped me to help my granddad like this.”

Friend Jade Bascombe said that once the group heard the news they were only too willing to do something.

“We all wanted to help and this was the idea we came up with,” said Jade. “It’s a fun way of helping to raise money and the results have been great.

Everyone has come along to support us.”

Through their efforts on the day the group managed to raise more than £200 and it now looks like Mr in just four days and it’s great. It really does show what young people can do when they put their mind Myers’ steam train dream will come true.

WIGAN Rotary Club was recently delighted to hear of the continued success of the Wigan Life Education Centre.

This mobile classroom costing £60,000 visits primary schools in the borough running classes on leading a healthy lifestyle, as well as the dangers of drug and alcohol.

In addition it has received positive feedback about the specially designed seven week course for parents to reinforce the healthy lifestyle message.The centre is run as a joint project by the eight Rotary Clubs in the Wigan Borough, who have to find around £35,000 a year to enable the centre to keep going.

Wigan Rotary president Venk Mani was delighted to be able to present a cheque for £1650 to centre trustee Colin Wilkinson and said ‘ This centre is highly praised by Ofsted, and the eminent consultant and TV personality Robert Winston. I hope this facility will continue for many years to come’Colin Wilkinson thanked Wigan Rotary Club for the generous donation and said ’ With budgets coming under great pressure, I hope the borough’s schools and parents will continue to support the important work of the Life Education Centre.’

THE CHARITY Breakfast and Coffee Mornings organised by St. Andrew’s Church Springfield Social Committee are going from strength to strength.

The Epilepsy Action UK event raised £130. Everyone wore purple as the theme is Purple Action.

A Slow Cooker was up for grabs in the raffle, which was won by Irene Smith.

In recent weeks the committee has also raised £95.40 for Diabetes UK- a great effort considering weather was extremely bad!

The committee’s next Breakfast and Coffee Morning is in aid of Christian Aid and takes place on Friday May 24th, another morning is scheduled on June 21st which will be in

aid of Autism.

All kinds of refreshments are available: tea, coffee, juice and toast, cinnamon toast, crumpets, cheese & ham toasties, tea cakes. Assorted cakes, tarts, fruit pies and small pots of jams are also available.

Hand-crafted cards are on sale, which have been made and donated by parishioners and friends, as well as a raffle and chocolate tombola. committee have The organised a special Afternoon Cream Tea event on Thursday June 6, which will have a Victorian style theme with teapots and cake stands.

The committee also hold a Bingo Kings & Queens sessions every Monday from 1pm in the St. Andrew’s Parish Centre.

Admittance is free. You pay only for your bingo tickets. Tea, coffee and biscuits are included and a small raffle is also held.

The bingo session ends between 3pm-3.15pm. All welcome.

The parish centre also hosts a Wigan Family & Local History Society meeting, on the second Wednesday of the mont (except July, August and December).

Standish Churches collect together for Christian Aid

Friends of Haigh raise £200 for Derian House Hospice

THE FRIENDS of Haigh Country Park (FOHCP) have raised a magnificent £200 for Derian House Children’s Hospice.

The friends of group, who formed last year to support events and improvements on the 250 acre park and woodland, raised the cash by asking for donations at a fayres organised in the Stables Courtyard at Haigh over Christmas and Easter.

Working with leisure and culture providers WLCT, the group has already spruced up and re-opened the crazy golf on site.

Over the next few months the 170 strong group will be asking their members to support a number of initiatives designed to enhance the park for visitors.

John Hulme, Chairman of the FOHCP, said: "All the group are extremely please with what we’ve achieved so far. Equally, we’re proud that we’ve been able to raise money for such a worthy charity at the same time.

"The Friends of Haigh Country Park continues to go from strength-to-strength and we look forward to

working with WLCT on future projects.

"Derian House is renowned throughout the region as being at the forefront of children’s palliative and respite care.

"Families who have a child with a life shortening condition can choose from a range of care and support services to meet their individual needs."

David Wilde, Fundraiser for Derian House, said: "We’re extremely grateful for this donation. We need to raise £2.9m each year to keep the doors open so every penny really does count."

WLCT manage Haigh Hall and Haigh Country Park on behalf of Wigan Council.

Louisa Bibby, Parks Activities Officer for WLCT who manage the site on behalf of the council, said: "We work with a strong network of volunteers and friends of groups in many of the borough’s parks and open spaces.

Entertainment all over Bank Holiday Weekend

This is being organised by members of The

programme THOMAS and North West-based dance company Fallen Angels is helping to transform the lives of people battling to overcome addiction.

And now, the dance company behind the project will get the chance to showcase the great work on a national stage.

On Tuesday March 12 Fallen Angels will take centre-stage at the Recovery Festival, which will be held at the QEII Conference Centre.

Dancers will perform in front of an invited audience, including Work and Pensions Secretary Iain Duncan Smith.

Vicky Fletcher, who is Arts Development Officer with WLCT is helping to co-ordinate the Wigan Project, says: “In Wigan we are continuing to develop a 12-week course which allows people who are overcoming drug and alcohol addictions to express their feelings and come to terms with their emotions using a combination of dance and speech to create a powerful performance.

“This creative recovery programme is helping people to take control of their own lives and in the fullness of time regain their independence and ultimately explore

opportunities for employment or voluntary work.”

The Recovery Festival has been organised as part of a government initiative to promote greater understanding about the recovery process to a range of audiences, including the business community.

Its ultimate aim is to forge links between business and those agencies working in the recovery field to foster greater understanding and encourage co-operation.

Paul Bayes Kitcher Fallen Angels Director says: “It's a fantastic opportunity to showcase the successes we have had in front of an extremely influential audience.

“It's a celebration of talent and will send the message that people who have battled drug and alcohol addiction and are now in recovery have both talent and ambition.”

Since THOMAS began their programme in Wigan last May, it has enjoyed some remarkably positive results.

These have included 12 people being referred to the Pathways to Education, Training and Employment service, seven taking advantage of volunteering and mentoring opportunities and two working towards nationally recognised qualifications in Health and Social Care.

Wayne McGarrigan, who is a Recovery Development Worker for THOMAS, is convinced of the project's benefits of the dance theatre workshops.

“It really is transforming lives,” he says. “When we first introduced dance theatre to it, the people we work with were naturally apprehensive, if not downright sceptical about its value. These are people who have often lost all confidence and self-esteem, can be socially isolated and often quite anxious and withdrawn as a result.

“You could almost hear the groans when we told them we were going to do a dance workshop but as soon as we got into it, they really took to it.”

As well as the Recovery Festival, the hope is that

people involved in the project will also stage a special performance in Wigan for an audience that includes representatives from organisations providing recovery services. The aim will be to express views about their experiences of the process in a bid to help improve it.

Wayne adds: “It has been like light coming on for some of the people involved, they have found motivation and energy that previously they would never have believed they had.

“Many of them are now looking beyond the recovery process to a fresh start and a much brighter future.”

Appley Bridge WI round-up

By Anne Foley, Press Secretary LAST month Graham Farrell came to give us a talk on his working life as a Magistrate.

He started the talk with giving us a brief history of Magistrates. He spoke of the 1800's when sentences given out by JPs to adults often included flogging for petty crimes such as stealing food.

Young children as young as eight were also included in these sentences. After a thought provoking and amusing

talk he brought us put to modern times were justice is hopefully more democratic.

His combination of facts and humor gave a talk not to be missed.

We have many local and county events organised for the future. If you would like to come along and find out more about us.

Our next meeting is on 8th May Appley Bridge Village Hall, Appley Lane North 7.30pm. The speaker will be Joanne Halliwell. Her talk will be "Betsy the Scullery Maid".

Wigan Photographic Society visit to Victoria Baths

MEMBERS of Wigan Photographic Society visited Victoria Baths for a photo shoot, in Manchester.

A volunteer-guide showed members around the complex, which was arranged by Debbie Cain another members of the society.

The guide had been a regular at the baths and brought the complex to life with personal anecdotes as well as tales of sports men and women who had benefited from the facilities.

The Victoria Baths Trust is fortunate that most of the Bath’s features have survived neglect, vandals and pigeons.

Interestingly, where some of the stained glass had not been so fortunate, their restoration has been made possible from faded contemporaneous photographs.

From the visit each member created their own photographic impression of the baths, with so much of interest inside and outside the building.

Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the day, and look forward to further visits to this unique survivor.

Ladies Guild visit the media

ON MONDAY April 8th the Wigan Ladies Guild held their Annual General meeting.

On this occasion a cheque for £1,710 was presented to Trish Green from The Brick in Wigan (refuge for the homeless).

Every year the Guild chooses a charity and over the past months has raised monies by individual donations, collection of copper, raffles, bring and buy stalls, sales of hanging baskets, knitted garments, plants and flowers, and not forgetting the popular homemade cakes and biscuits.

Following a vote at the meeting the nominated charity for the coming year is Prostate Cancer UK, which we hope will be well supported by the ladies.

Once again the Guild has had a very successful year maintaining a high membership with the support of

financial backing from Wigan Council.

Throughout the year we have experienced excellent speakers, social events and outings to shows and various places of interest.

In March a group enjoyed a lovely day out to Dowleys Cheesemakers, Garstang, followed by a visit to Barton Grange. Garstang Blue cheese is delicious and can be recommended.

Later in the month a smaller group visited the BBC at Media City.

Outing planned for the future include a Mystery trip (the question is where are we going?), DIY day at Llandudno, a day in St. Anne’s with a visit to the Ice Show in Blackpool and the opportunity to see the show ‘Wicked’ at The Palace Theatre, Manchester in November.

Heart specialist made star of centre

THE heart specialist who gave Wigan and Leigh its first class cardiology service has been recognised with his very own star placed in the grounds of Wigan Boroughs’ newest flagship development.

Dr Nayyar Naqvi, whose dedication to medicine and treating the people of Wigan Borough spans more than forty years, had his achievements honoured at a special recognition ceremony where he received his very own commemorative star placed outside Wigan Life Centre.

The star – which was presented to Dr Naqvi by Lord Peter Smith, Leader of Wigan Council – will be seen by the hundreds of local people who visit the award-winning development every day to access a host of public, voluntary and community services including housing and council tax benefit support, health advice, help finding work and to take part in personal development courses.

Dr Naqvi began his medical career at Wigan Royal Infirmary in 1970 before going on to set up the cardiology service for Wigan and Leigh Health Authority in 1979. In 2004 he was awarded with an OBE from Her Majesty the

Queen, for his services to Medicine and Cardiology.

He was joined by family, friends and colleagues to accept his special accolade outside Wigan Life Centre which will join famous Wigan faces including Billy Boston, Stuart Maconie and John Winnard.

Lord Peter Smith, Leader of Wigan Council, said: “I was delighted to present Dr Naqvi with his own star to recognise his tremendous contribution to cardiology and looking after the health of local people.

“Placing it outside such a popular flagship development where it will be seen by local residents - many of which being his own patients - seemed like a fitting way to show our thanks for the highly valued treatment he provides to the people of Wigan Borough.”

Dr Nayyar Naqvi said: “It is a great honour to have my own star outside Wigan Life Centre and to be placed among some of Wigan Boroughs’biggest and best talents.

“I am very passionate about cardiology and I believe treating patients is a reward in itself. The people of Wigan are very special to me and I have worked through many challenges to provide them with a first class cardiology service - and this is something I shall continue to do for as long as I am capable.”

Walk to School Week (20-24 May) is an opportunity for parents and children across the UK to try walking to school. Along with Walk to Work Week (13-17 May), Walk to School Week forms a part of National Walking Month, a month dedicated to celebrating the benefits of walking.

The case for lowering the voting age for Wigan’s Young People is stronger than ever

IF IT IS possible for 16 and 17year-olds to consent to medical treatment, leave school and enter the world of work, obtain tax credits and welfare benefits, pay income tax and national insurance, consent to sexual relations, change their name by deed poll, get married or enter a civil partnership, become the director of a company and join the armed forces, then in all fairness, they should have the right to vote.

Some of the most difficult questions I face as a local MP come when I take part in Q&As with Winstanley College students. They have a keen interest in the political system and the effect that

Walking to school regularly is not only a fantastic way to encourage an active lifestyle, it is also a great opportunity to teach your children vital road safety skills and ensure they are alert and ready to learn at the start of a new day.

Teachers even report that those pupils who walk to school are more attentive once they reach their desks.

Over the past couple of decades, the number of children walking to school has fallen sharply. In 2011, 49 per cent of primary school aged children and 38 per cent of secondary school aged children walked to school, down from 62 per cent of primary and 48 per cent of secondary school aged children in 1991.

However Living Streets’ Walk once a Week (WoW) scheme bucks the trend. It helped nearly 6,800 schools and over 1.9 million children and young people get walking across the UK last year – with a recent project

seeing a rise of 32% in children walking.

Lisa said: “I am thrilled to be taking part in Living Streets’ Walk to School Week this year and hope that parents and children from across Wigan join me. Walking is key to fighting childhood obesity, but it can also be beneficial to children in other ways, helping them learn vital road safety skills, to interact with their local environment and to become ‘streetwise’ and develop independence.”

Tony Armstrong, Chief Executive of Living Streets said: “This May, we want to get the whole of the UK buying a ticket to stride. As part of National Walking Month we’re urging families up and down the country to give walking a go during Walk to School Week.”

“We think you’ll be amazed at what a difference a short blast of fresh air can do for you. It’s free, green and easy and above all it works. We need to encourage children to get walking now and set healthy habits for the future.”

political decisions have on their own lives.

It makes absolutely no sense at all that we expect 16 year olds to behave and engage like young adults, and in some cases go to foreign lands to fight for their country, yet they cannot choose the government that sent them there in the first place.

The last time Parliament reduced the voting age was in 1969, when it was reduced from 21 to 18. Those against reducing the voting age to 16 use remarkably similar arguments to those against that voting change.

Organisations like the British Youth Council and UK Youth Parliament have been campaigning on this for years, and recently Parliament voted

heavily in support of a motion to lower the voting age. The result is not binding on the Government but cross party support is growing as are the voices of 16 and 17 year olds across the country.

In my experience 16 and 17 year olds today are ready to engage and participate in our democracy, having learnt the principles in compulsory citizenship education. Through being a local youth councillor, a member of a youth parliament or their student union, they are already engaging in significant numbers.

The next step is Votes at 16 – a move that would empower young people to better engage in society and influence decisions that will define their future and the future of our country.

Launch of new health board

THE BOARD of trustees for the new Healthwatch Wigan organisation have been appointed in time for the launch.

The chair, former Makerfield MP, Sir Ian McCartney, will be joined by the newly appointed board of trustees. Between them, Paul Carrol, Jenny Maguire, Norman Williams, Andrew Rogers, Eleanor Blackburn, Tim Smith and Martin Broom have over 100 years’ experience working in health and social care and also as patients and carers.

Run by patients for patients, the trustees and chair will be tasked with looking after the health needs of local people in Wigan Borough, acting as an independent watchdog with the power to influence how NHS and social care services are planned and improved in the borough.

Sir Ian, who was a cabinet minister in a previous labour government, will work with the trustees to ensure the public’s views on health and social care issues are heard and acted upon. Sir Ian said: “As a patient and carer, I am delighted to add my voice in support of the 300,000 plus people of Wigan.

“This is a great opportunity to help shape the services many people in Wigan Borough rely upon. Too often in the past, people have complained the voice of patients is ignored when important decisions about the NHS or social care have been made. This is an opportunity to ensure people’s views are heard loud and clear.

“With a vast array of experience in healthcare, both first-hand and professionally, I am confident that the board of trustees will make a positive difference to the delivery of health services in Wigan Borough.

Lord Peter Smith, leader of Wigan Council, said: “The calibre of trustees and their various backgrounds and specialisms will, I’m sure, help to make Healthwatch a success.

“Together, their professional and personal experience of the health and social service will allow them to apply logic, while understanding and emphasising with patients’ needs, making them ideal candidates for the job.”

"It's selling like the clappers," said Paul, who was more famous previously for his horror novels and Dr Who scripts, but who by his own admission is now an affirmed thriller writer. "Most readers seem to like it a lot, but the main response I'm getting is how dark and edgy it is. I can only assume that's my horror background showing through, but I am an ex-copper as well, so I like to think there's a lot of authenticity there."

Good news on crime

ALMOST 2,000 criminals were swept off the streets as part of Greater Manchester Police's latest and largest offender targeting operation.

Officers from across the force targeted the county’s most wanted criminals in a bid to spring clean crime between 25 March and 14 April.

It resulted in the arrest of 1,927 people and police executed 285 warrants in a bid to clamp down on overall crime. A total of £69,990 was also seized and officers carried out disruption visits to 3,163 known offenders within the region. Arrests were for a variety of offences including robbery, drug-related crime, burglary, driving offences, domestic abuse and rape.

Six arrests were made as a direct result of information from the public who saw wanted offenders on ad vans and one offender handed himself in over fears his face would be on screen next.

The operation was made up of a number of days of action carried out throughout the force by various policing teams and partner agencies such as social services, Trading Standards and SOCA (serious and organised crime agency).

Cannabis factories were found in Salford and Wigan, eight people were charged for organised crime in Oldham and 36 arrests were made as part of a drugs operation in North Manchester.

Eighty three arrests and sixty three charges were made as part of an operation to target offenders of vulnerability crimes

such as rape, sexual assault, domestic abuse and child protection offences. Sixty three of those arrested have been charged and 439 referrals were made to partner agencies such as social services.

The Xcalibre Task Force, a policing team that tackles gun and gang-related crime, worked with officers in Trafford to carry out eight firearms warrants on an organised crime group. Seven people were arrested after quantities of cocaine and cannabis were seized along with £1000.

Officers also worked within communities to engage with young people. A youth bus was used in south Manchester during school holidays, 87 school visits were carried out and 145 community crime surgeries were held by neighbourhood officers and police community support officers.

WIGAN’S FIRST ever 10k run is causing a political rumble in Labour ranks....

Wigan MP Lisa Nandy and Leigh MP Andy Burnham have both declared their intention to run, and the MPs are now taunting each other via social media as to who will finish first.

The charity event 10K will be held on Sunday 8th September and will start and finish in Wigan town centre - passing a host of Wigan's landmarks along the route.

The event has been organised by local charity Joining Jack with support from Wigan Council and Wigan Leisure & Culture Trust.

Lisa said: “I've told Andy he'd better dust of his running shoes and start training if he wants to keep up."

It's not total war between the MPs, though. Lisa added: "When he crosses the finishing line I’ll be there with a bottle of water for him”.

Deanery Eco-group - How can you help?

RECYCLING is a big issue to everyone at the moment.

FINE ART students studying at Wigan & Leigh College, have currently got their artwork displayed on the 2012 Saatchi Gallery website as part of the Sunday Telegraph Art Prize Schools.

The students entered are currently studying on a two-year Level 3 Extended Diploma in Art & Design. They are specialising in Fine Art exploring a full range of themes and experimenting with traditional and non-traditional fine art media.

The competition is sponsored by Deutsche Bank and the first prize of £10,000 will be awarded to the winning school’s art department, with a further £2,000 given to the winning pupil to be spent on art and computer equipment. There are also two further runner-up prizes of £5,000 each will be awarded to the second and third placed schools, with a further £1,000 to each of the winning pupils.

Art tutor, Lee Paton said: “The students have produced some beautiful and creative works of art. They have a professionalism and sophistication that is befitting of the type of modern artwork to be found in a world renowned institution such as the Saatchi Gallery. The students and myself discussed ideas for a project and were inspired by a visit to the Turner, Monet & Twombly exhibition held at Tate Liverpool, in which colour has been used to express meaning, emotion, light and form. We then decided to work with another department in the School for the Arts, Dance.

"We were allowed into the dance studio to watch and draw the dancers, recording the lines of their movements. We explored the two elements of colour and movement which allowed the students to create the large scale canvases entered into the competition. I am so proud of their work and accomplishments and hopefully one student may be rewarded for the effort, understanding, creativity and hard work.”

You’re probably aware of the increasing number of bins in your back garden!

Well, this year they have been put around the school as well. So, to help our school become more eco-friendly, make sure you use the correct bins when you throw away your rubbish. There are many simple things you can do and they will all make a beneficial impact to the school and the planet. It’s easy!

As part of the Year 11 Citizenship course, some of the pupils have chosen to campaign for a greater awareness for the need to recycle. Through a meeting with Councillor George Davies, they managed to receive £100 for The

Deanery in order to help our school become more ecofriendly! This money will hopefully be used to begin new schemes to give our school the ‘Green Flag’ award which means we are one of the most eco-friendly schools in the area.

At the Deanery, we are running a club to promote recycling and other ways in which we can help our environment. The Eco-Club has recently received a bronze award for helping to increase the amount of recycling done at our school. But, there is so much more that can be done!

The Eco-club needs the help of everyone at The Deanery because, even the little things help. Just by putting your plastic bottles in the right bins will help our planet become a healthier place.

Success for Silver Choir

LESS than 18 months ago Wigan's Bright Days Silver Choir was established, and since then the choir has gone from strength to strength and hasn't looked back.

The choir meet every Wednesday at the Performing Arts Centre in Hindley. Under the guidance of Sharon Darby, from Wigan Musics Services, the sessions are enjoyable, fun and uplifting and gives members the opportunity to socialise and make new friends.

Council say bin it right

RESIDENTS in Wigan Borough are being reminded to ‘bin it right’.

Huge savings have been made since changes to waste collections were made last year. But with spring round the corner, and people heading out into the garden, the council is reminding people the green bin is there to be used for garden and food waste only.

Doorstep recycling rates have increased by 20 - 50 tonnes a week. Since food waste collections began, 250 tonnes less waste a week has been collected for disposal. This saves taxpayers’ money and reduces our impact on the environment.

Wigan Council is urging residents to keep up the good work by ensuring they are putting the right rubbish in the right bin. Recycling collection crews have noticed a problem with cardboard in particular with some households using the green bin, meant for food and garden waste, instead of the blue bin or white bag. Residents who put the wrong items in their bins run the risk of having their bin left uncollected.

Councillor Kevin Anderson, Wigan Council’s cabinet member for the environment, said: “It’s great to see the gradual increase in recycling rates in Wigan.

There has been a substantial change to bin collections over recent years and I appreciate the patience and cooperation of residents who are making every effort to do their bit for the environment.”

The council has now finished delivering a new supply of compostable food waste liners to residents’ doorsteps. From now onwards, residents can collect liners for free from their local life centre. Liners are also available to buy in most supermarkets. Alternatively, food waste can be put into the green bin loose or wrapped in newspaper.

A canopy opens and you are enveloped by the peaceful, serene sensation of effortlessly drifting to the ground attached to a professional freefall parachute instructor!

Wigan & Leigh Hospice have obtained 30 places for intrepid people who want to go up, up and away with them to the sky dive centre in Lancaster.

The idea was originated by Chris Shaw, a member of a Hospice Volunteer Support Group in Pemberton. He says, “Two years ago I was invited to take part in a sky dive.

Like most people I was very apprehensive. But I ‘bit the bullet’and said OK! I have always been terrified of heights and the thoughts of jumping out of a plane at 14,000 feet and free-falling to the ground was something of a challenge. But it was one of the best experiences of my life.”

I was strapped to an instructor and we ascended to the dizzy heights. The door opened and I was met by a magnificent view. The next thing I knew I was freefalling, but was amazed that I didn’t have a feeling of insecurity or excessive speed. It was a fantastic experience - and to be raising money for the Hospice was a massive bonus.”

Hospice Community Fundraiser Julie Houston said, “Based on Chris’s experience, the group decided to organise a sky dive in aid of the Hospice. We have 30 adult places for Saturday 15th June. Twenty of which have gone very quickly.”

Four ASDA staff from Leigh expressed an interest, but were understandably nervous. So a meeting with Chris was arranged at the Hospice. Mike Seddon, owner of NW Model Supplies in Hindley, brought a large model plane to

demonstrate how it all works.

ASDA’s Cathy Jones says, “Climbing Snowden was an ordeal for me, but I love doing exciting activities. I am very much looking forward to throwing myself out of a plane. I know what brilliant work they do at the Hospice and I’m already excited at the prospect.” Abi, Stacey and Tracy, also from ASDA Leigh added, “We can’t wait.”

College students make friends

STUDENTS from Wigan & Leigh College have designed the new logo for Hindley’s ‘Friends in Dementia’ (FinD) initiative.

More than 20 students from the Foundation Degree in Graphic Design course created 50 designs to brand the project, which is an NHS innovation scheme to pilot new ideas in communities and improve support for people affected by dementia.

The organisers of the project, which has brought together local community groups, shops, churches, businesses, residents and local services approached the College as they wanted to utilise the students’ creative skills The students were given the brief to come up with an idea that incorporated the FinD name and the Forget Me Knot flower, which is the national symbol for dementia. They then had 24 hours to come up with ideas and submit their design to their tutor.

The winning design, by second year student Natasha Ling, was selected because the community thought it communicated FinD’s key messages. It could also be easily re-produced on to window stickers and pin badges, as well as other publicity purposes.

Wigan & Leigh College tutor, David Beattie, spoke about the benefit of his students working with real clients. He said: “Having the experiences of working with live briefs and clients who have specific requirements in the delivery of a finished solution is essential for all design students.

“The opportunity in a quick-fire brief to research, create and present an idea gives the students a taste of the real design world and this understanding is valuable for a future career.”

Other clients the Graphics team has worked with include Uncle Joe’s Mint Balls, Freshers Foods, National Health Service and the College’s own Marketing Department.

FSB Chairman responds to new figures in first quarter

THE new FSB Merseyside, West Cheshire and Wigan Chairman as branded the bank lending figures as "extremely disappointing".

Elaine Moore, who recently replaced new FSB National Chairman John Allan as Chairman of Merseyside, West Cheshire and Wigan, is responding to figures showing bank lending to small firms fell by £4.8 billion in the first

quarter of 2013.

According to the Bank of England’s latest 'trends in lending' report, small business lending was down by four per cent on the final quarter of 2012, and by three per cent year-on-year – despite numerous high-profile government schemes designed to boost access to finance.

“A fall in bank lending to small businesses, despite the introduction of Funding for Lending and the

business bank, is extremely disappointing,” said Elaine.

“With further credit restrictions from banks anticipated, the growth prospects of small firms are at risk – we need the business bank, and the newly-created Financial Conduct Authority, to help deliver greater competition in the form of new banking entrants and non-bank alternatives without delay.”

The Government will announce that Funding for Lending, its £80

billion loan scheme, will be extended.

“Funding for Lending has helped the mortgage market but not small business lending – the jury is out on this scheme," added Elaine.

"We hope that it is extended to include non-bank funding platforms in order to begin to address this situation, and clearly having a greater choice of competing providers would be the ideal situation."

Super slimmers’ weight-loss success is in the bag!

Slimmers in Orrell, Shevington and at Standish High School are dropping pounds (lbs) and bagging up all the clothes they’ve slimmed out of to raise money for a good cause in The Big Slimming World Clothes Throw.

Members of the Orrell. Shevington and Standish High School Slimming World groups have spring-cleaned their closets and are donating the clothes that no longer fit their new slimline figures to their local Cancer Research UK shop in Ormskirk.

Barbara Steane , who runs the groups which meet at Orrell every Monday, Shevington every Tuesday and Standish High School every Wednesday says members were delighted to get behind the cause and jumped at the chance to recycle their old tops, dresses, trousers, skirts and more.

The Big Slimming World Clothes Throw is a nationwide fundraising drive that sees Slimming World members across the UK donating clothes to Cancer Research UK, Slimming World’s charity partner for 2013. Each bag of clothes collected could raise up to £25.

Barbara says: “Members in the groups have lost over 5,000 lbs ~ (more than 370 stone) since January this year and they’re feeling fantastic! Lots of people have dropped down clothes sizes and their wardrobes are full of clothes that are too big and baggy now. And they’re happy to give them away because they know that they’re never going to need them again! Our Food Optimising plan isn’t a

diet that members follow for a little while and then ‘come off’ when they’ve reached their target weight. At group each week we support members to make healthy changes to the way they shop, cook and eat that they can keep up for life so they really do slim for good.”

Suzanne Baxter, who has lost 4stone since joining and dropped from a dress size 24 to 16, says: “I found it really liberating to get rid of all my old clothes and I’m not worried about ever needing them again because this is me now – there’s no going back! It’s not just a more healthy diet that I love since I joined Slimming World, I’m much more active now too. I have joined an exercise group and walk regularly and it’s all just part of my new life, so much so that I sometimes forget I wasn’t always like this. And it’s wonderful to think that I’ve supported the other members of the group to achieve their own weight loss dreams at the same time.”

STUDENTS AND staff at Wigan & Leigh College discovered what their auras had to say about them at the College’s recent open evening.

WIGAN & LEIGH College lecturer Melanie Doyle has been named as one of the top make-up artists in Britain at a national competition in London.

The 35 year old Make-up and Beauty Therapy tutor from Glazebury Village near Leigh, entered the ‘exposure revelation’ category at the National Warpaint Professional Make-up Artist Competition at Professional Beauty, ExCel London, where she scooped the runner-up prize.

On the day Melanie had two hours to create a camera ready look on a model, which had to appear re-touched even though it had not been. At the end of the time, the model was photographed and that image formed part of the judging process.

The judging panel included celebrity make-up artist Gary Cockerill, creative director of the competition, and celebrity photographer Alan Strutt, who has snapped a whole host of famous faces, such as Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell and Madonna.

Melanie, who has been teaching for the past 12 years, was part of the team that set up Wigan & Leigh College’s successful hair and make-up course.

Melanie said: “It was a fantastic feeling when my name was called, as I hadn’t gone into the competition expecting to even gain a place, let alone come second, so it was a really nice surprise.

“I entered because I’m always pushing my students to go in for competitions and I wanted to be able to guide them through the process with real and recent experience. The competition has given me a fantastic insight into the pressures and time management involved, and the experience will help prepare our students for future success.”

Local aura photographer Howard Minton was invited to the Holistic Therapy and Complementary Therapy department after forging close links with the College, and used special cameras to capture images of the participants.

Open day attendees who had their photograph taken were then given a reading

by Howard, based on whichever colour surrounded them, signifying different personality traits.

Louise Gray, Divisional Manager for Beauty & Holistic Therapy at Wigan & Leigh College said: “Inviting Howard to the College provides an opportunity for visitors and students to experience new opportunities and broaden horizons.

“Students and staff loved the concept as we often talk about auras, but being able to see them brings lessons to life.”

Howard commented: “I had a fantastic response from both students and staff.

Many were surprised at the colour of their auras, especially as everyone always thinks it will come out black.”

Aura photography, which is also known as Kirlian photography, was first discovered in 1939, but became well known in 1970. Practitioners believe it depicts the energy surrounding living things.

College students design ethical fashion

WIGAN & Leigh College’s Fashion students have used their creative flair to design outfits from recycled men’s shirts.

The second year students gratefully received the shirts as a donation from Wigan & Leigh Hospice, before looking to the late Victorian / early Edwardian era as a source of inspiration to get their projects underway.

Students attended contemporary designer catwalks to develop their own blouse ideas based on this trend. As part of the project, the students also researched information on ethical designers working within the fashion industry.

For their final design, students produced their own blouse pattern and then had the challenging task of cutting up the donated shirts to create their piece.

At the end of the project the students organised and styled their own photo shoot, with the help of second year Photography student, Elysee Gill.

Course Leader, Dawn Cunningham, said: “The project has been a great success and has helped to raise the student’s awareness of ethical fashion issues.

“It has also made them aware that they can produce creative and wearable designs by re-cycling existing garments.

“The College is extremely grateful for the Hospice’s part in making it all possible.”

The responses are valuable to the College and will be used as part of its strategic plan to improve curriculum offer.

Guests were treated to canapés and cupcakes made and served by the College’s own Catering & Hospitality students.

A 10bhp difference might sound significant, but in reality the standard car feels every bit as fast in a straight line - that's because it produces the same 350Nm of torque (70Nm more than the Mk6 GTI).

Bury the throttle and with maximum torque from just 1,500rpm the engine wakes up instantly, squeezing you into the snug tartantrimmed sports seats and firing you down the road.

The smooth power delivery is reminiscent of the new 296bhp Audi S3, although it lacks the S3's initial knockout punch.

In place of the electronic differential lock, the standard car uses a development of the previous car's XDS system, which brakes the wheels with least grip.

Find a tight corner and you can immediately feel the callipers nibbling away at the front and rear inside wheels, helping tighten your line and stop the car washing wide.

It always feels like its killing the power though and slowing you down, whereas the differential lock does the opposite helping you to use more of the power by sending it to the wheel that can use it, and driving you out the other side.

It's not as quick through the corners then, but the standard GTI's brakes are more than up to the task, unless you plan on spending a lot of time on track.

The DSG gearbox also rifles through the ratios quickly and efficiently, with

a characteristic hiccup from the exhausts to accompany manual upshifts.

Several driver profiles let you tailor a wide range of parameters - Comfort, Normal, Sport, Eco and Individual - alter how the steering, gearbox, throttle and (if you pay £795 for adaptive chassis control) dampers behave.

Take the time to setup your 'Individual' preferences though because while the suspension never feels too firm in Sport mode, the DSG holds onto gears for fraction too long.

Switch all systems to comfort and it's easy to forget you’re driving a GTI altogether - the suspension is so supple and road noise so well suppressed that you'll need to watch the speedo to ensure you're not touching triple figure speeds, without realising it.

The steering isn't full of feel (modern systems rarely

are), but the way the front end reacts to your inputs is perfecty judged.

A variable ratio system, which increases the amount the wheels turn depending on the angle of the wheel, has a natural feel and allows you to tackle hairpins without crossing your hands. And you'll want to keep both hands on the wheel, because the GTI's rock-solid cornering stability constantly encourages you to carry ever-spiralling speeds through the bends.

Verdict

The new Golf GTI is quieter at a cruise, faster in a straight line and more stable under cornering. It's also 42kg lighter, better looking and costs just £195 more than its predecessor, despite its improved quality, safety and equipment levels. For the

ultimate experience, though, we'd spend an extra £980 and go for the Performance Pack, which lets you use more of the power more of the time. There are more exciting hot hatches on sale, but none offer a more complete package than the Golf GTI.

Apple working on more in-car tech

IPHONE owners could soon be able to use the Maps app and Siri voice recognition tool via vehicle’s their entertainment system.

It has been reported that Apple is currently in discussion with car manufacturers about developing in-car integration for the next generation of its smartphone operating system.

It would mean that users of iOS7 – set to be launched in June – could connect their iPhones to their cars and bring up an optimised, redesigned version of Apple Maps on the centre console.

As well as being able to use the app’s sat-nav function, drivers could control it via Siri.

Apple announced last year that it was working with Audi, BMW, Chrysler, Honda, General Motors, Jaguar, Land Rover, Mercedes and Toyota to integrate its voice recognition software with in-car controls through a feature called Eyes Free.

New Range Rover Sport for 2013 THE NEW Range Rover Sport may share a platform and part of its name with the latest Range Rover, but this is a car that is promising something entirely different.

Land Rover has said that the Sport is built from 75 per cent bespoke parts, in an effort to make this “the fastest, most agile, most responsive Land Rover ever”.

Whether it is or not is a question we now have our best shot of answering, having been behind the wheel of a prototype at Land Rover’s Gaydon test facility.

Our Sport was powered by the SDV6 engine, which means you get 288bhp, 600Nm of torque and acceleration from 0-60mph in 6.8 seconds – that’s 2.1 seconds quicker than the outgoing SDV6 Sport. And the good news is this engine is even more refined than before, revving smoothly and quietly at all times.

Buyers can also choose a 254bhp TDV6, a 334bhp SDV8 or a 503bhp 5.0-litre supercharged V8. Having only driven the SDV6, it’s difficult to say for certain but it could well be the pick of the range. It pulls quickly from the off, and accelerated up to 130mph on Gaydon’s test track with little trouble. What’s more, Land Rover says fuel economy will be around 37mpg and CO2 emissions are improved by 13 per cent over the outgoing car, at 199g/km.

The huge improvements in performance and emissions are the result of a new aluminium body and platform, first developed for the latest Range Rover. It saves 420kg compared with the outgoing car, and that also has a great effect on the Sport’s dynamic abilities.

more than it does in the Range Rover, the steering wheel is smaller and the rack is quicker. As a result it feels a lot more like a sports car, and it even handles a lot more like one, too. Quick direction changes can’t unsettle the Sport, and it grips hard while exhibiting a surprising lack of body roll. Engineers say – as only engineers can – that handling is 30 per cent better than the old model, and that figure sounds about right.

We didn’t have a chance to test the new Sport off-road but the engineering team says it’s the best in class, and if the new Range Rover is anything to go by we’re expecting it to be very impressive.

Active Roll Control and torque vectoring help keep it going where you want it to go, and you can feel the Sport tightening its line around a particularly sharp bend as it brakes the inside wheels and directs power to the outside.

Land Rover wanted the Sport to be able to cover long distances in comfort, and while the ride is noticeably firmer than the Range Rover’s, it still works as a very luxurious motorway cruiser. Thumps and bumps make their way in to the cabin more readily, but ride comfort is still excellent. As is the refinement, which is characterised but very little wind noise, next-to-no wind noise and as little tyre noise as you can find in this class.

Off-roading is still very important, despite this being the Sport model, so it gets the latest Terrain Response system, ground clearance increased by 52mm, improved approach and departure angles and a new wading sensor system that can

Poor eyesight loses licences

ALMOST 6,000 motorists have had their licences revoked or blocked because they cannot see the road properly.

The Department for Transport (DfT) revoked or blocked 5,285 licences for cars and motorbikes in 2011 because the motorists could not pass a standard eye test.

This is an increase of eight per cent since 2010, when 4,906 motorists were banned.

The number of lorry or bus drivers who had their licences revoked or banned has increased by 39 per cent, from 493 in 2010 to 685 in 2011.

Transport minister Stephen Hammond revealed the figures in response to parliamentary questions from Labour MP Meg Munn. He said: “Licensing rules have an important part to play in keeping our roads safe. We must make sure that only those who are safe to drive are allowed on our roads while at the same time avoiding placing unnecessary restrictions on people’s independence.”

Under DfT rules, drivers must be able to read a car number plate from 20 metres in order to pass a driving test. But once a driver has passed their test, there are no further compulsory eyesight tests. Instead, drivers assess themselves when renewing their

licence to ensure that they meet the required standard.

Mr Hammond continued: “If the DVLA is made aware that a licence holder may not meet the minimum eyesight standards for driving then they will investigate. If it is confirmed that a driver does not meet the standards, the DVLA will revoke the licence.”

Driving with defective eyesight is an offence and a driver who does not meet the required standard could be prosecuted or have their insurance invalidated. But the Government has ruled out introducing mandatory eye tests for drivers looking to renew their licence.

A SPORTSMAN’S Dinner is being held at the Britannia Hotel on Almond Brook Road in Standish on 17th May. Organisers are supporting the Joining Jack charity with a big raffle on the evening.

Guest speakers are Bobby Goulding, the ex-Wigan, Saints, Leeds and GB scrum half, and RL referee Karl Kirkpatrick, who have formed a bit of a double act on the sportsmans dinner circuit and are apparently very funny together!

There will also be a turn from a lady comedian.

Dinner is soup, roast beef with all the trimmings, and apple crumble for dessert.

Drink offers will be available courtesy the hotel throughout the evening at the bar, and attendees can look forward to all the other traditional sportsman dinner shenanigans...

Courier SPORT Warriors in Brief New gym opens at rugby club Richards to leave

STAR winger Pat Richards will be leaving the Warriors at the end of the season to return home to Australia where he will re-join his former side Wests Tigers.

Pat’s contract with Wigan expires at the end of the 2013 campaign and after discussions with Pat he informed the Club that he wishes to head back down under after eight seasons in the Super League. Richards has agreed a Two-Year contract with the Tigers for Seasons 2014 and 2015.

Warriors’ manager Shaun Wane said; “Pat is not only a sensational player but also a great person and we will miss his influence both on and off the field. He has made the decision to head home after this season and understand the reasons behind that. We hope that he can provide him with some more happy memories before he departs.”

Pat added; “This has been a difficult decision to make as I have thoroughly enjoyed my eight seasons with Wigan but the time has come for my family and I to return home. I will take with me many happy memories and I can only thank everyone for making me so welcome. I have been extremely fortunate to achieve the successes I have with Wigan with the team and individually and am hoping I can end my time here in England with more silverware to come this season.

Richards has made over 200 appearances for Wigan since joining in 2006 from Wests Tigers where he has scored over 150 tries, over 800 goals and is approaching 2,300 points for the Club. Pat moved up to 3rd spot as the Club’s top points scorer of all time in 2012 and added to the successes of a Grand Final win in 2010 and Challenge in 2011, in 2010 he won the prestigious individual honour of being named Man of Steel.

Powell signs from Sale WARRIORS have signed Wales Rugby

Union Forward, Andy Powell, on a twoand- a- half year contract for the remainder of 2013 plus Seasons 2014 and 2015. Andy will join the Warriors at the end of the 2012/13 Rugby Union season when his current contract comes to an end. Andy is a powerful forward who has spent his last two years at Sale Sharks in the Aviva Premiership having previously played for Wasps, Cardiff, Newport and Llanelli. He comes highly recommended as a perfect candidate for code transition to Rugby League by previous Wigan players in rugby Union.

THE NEW gymnasium and fitness suite at Wigan RUFC’s Douglas Valley headquarters was officially opened on April 22nd by a special guest and sponsor from Indonesia, former player Alan ‘Knocker’ Nye.

Accompanied by his old friend, Wigan club President Frank Morgan, and a group of club officials, Knocker helped a member of the younger generation at Wigan.

Principal of the Britmindo Mining Services Company,Alan was a player at Douglas Valley in the 1970's before he moved to the Southern Hemisphere to further his career. Other contributions came from Electromec, Carlsberg and Standish Media Services.

The gym has been established in the refurbished squash courts, courtesy of a Landfill Tax Credit Grant from Biffa with the work completed by DDC Building and Joinery Ltd.Charles Taylor, from the Junior Section of the club, cut the ribbon to mark the opening of the gym facility which has been developed over the old squash courts at the club. The facility also provides office and storage space as well as the gym and changing facilities for men and women.

Frank Morgan presented Knocker with a certificate as a tribute to his support for the club, despite being based across the other side of the world.

Local husband-and-wife company Wigan Fitness has reached agreement to operate the gym on behalf of the club.

SECOND ROW International Liam Farrell has agreed a new five year Contract with the Club. Liam’s original contract ran until the end of the current season with options for the next two years. This new deal secures Liam to Wigan for Seasons 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017 with an option for 2018.Farrell has been one of the stand-out Super League players this season and has been widely tipped for an England place in the Rugby League World Cup which kicks off in October.

WIGAN’S Junior Colts squad have won the Raging Bull Colts League Shield, defeating Blackburn at Eccles RUFC on SundayApril 28th.

Wigan kicked off into the wind and were clearly the team making the better start but against the run of play Blackburn grabbed the opening try.

Wigan pressed again and were rewarded with an interception by Matty Price for try under the posts with Jon Clayton adding the extras.

This was short lived as Blackburn were awarded a

penalty and added a second try with the conversion for 7-15 at half time.

The second half saw Wigan first up to the mark with Lewis Webb collecting Wigan’s second try, narrowing the difference to 12 -15. Jon Clayton showing style to put Brad Price away for a fantastic try, Clayton’s conversion giving Wigan 19-15 lead.

Organiser Malcolm Holland said: “ It’s a long way for old and battered limbs to pedal, but at least most of it is very flat, very scenic and off main roads!”

“The cost is £10 donation/sponsorship per rider – if over and above this you want to raise individual sponsorship you are free to do so and a sponsor form will be available shortly, but riders are under no obligation to do so.”

Malc will collect any sponsor money up to two weeks after the ride, so riders do NOT need to bring the money on the day: “All we want off each rider on the day is a ‘tenner for Christies,’” siad Malcolm, “The emphasis is on this being a fun event – the ride is always a cracker and is open to everyone, not just rugby veterans: indeed the more the merrier – bring a friend/partner/lover or all 3!
