Corey’s Hospice tribute to his Dad Ric See page 9

Standish youngster is star fundraiser for Hospice where his Dad was treated

A SIX-YEAROLD Standish lad has helped raise funds for Wigan and Leigh Hospice in memory of his Dad.

Corey Coggins helped to raise £141.82 in memory of Ric Coggins who was cared for by the hospice in 2011 after he was diagnosed with bowel cancer at just 32 years old. The youngster raised funds by selling Wigan and Leigh Hospice wristbands at Woodfold Primary School and at Standish Swim School, with the support of Jean Lowton, where he

takes his swimming lessons. It isn’t the first time Corey has taken on a fundraising challenge for the hospice. In 2014 he sold loom bands, and the year before suggested organising Daddy’s Duck Race. The duck race, which took place near Wigan Investment Centre, raised more than £4,000. Mum Carrie Coggins said: “Corey is really keen to keep on helping the Hospice and he’s already thinking about his next fundraising idea. “When Ric was ill the hospice team were fantastic. Staff regularly came to our home to care for him and were always there to answer any

questions and support us as a family. They also gave myself and Corey a lot of support after Ric passed on.” “Corey knows that

the hospice helped his Dad and that it constantly needs to raise a lot of money so he’s really keen to do his bit to help.” The Community Fundraiser for the Hospice Christine Edwardson, said: “Corey has done a brilliant job of

FOUR WIGAN ProCo students have been on the trip of a lifetime, swapping their college life in Wigan for two weeks training in Malta.

ST JOHN RIGBY College student, Nadia Turton, was narrowed down from thousands of applicants to reach the Grand Final of Top Model and won the public vote!

Nadia, who studies Biology, Mathematics and Chemistry travelled down to the Hilton Metropole Hotel in London on March 13th and 14th, where she walked down the catwalk alongside 160 finalists from across the UK and globally.

around the country and I also think being out of my comfort zone has really boosted my confidence. It has definitely broadened my horizons but I still have my heart set on going on studying Biochemistry at university. I think modelling sometimes has some stigma attached to it but ultimately it is about displaying fashion, which is a form of art. Everybody

taking part and the organisers were so welcoming and friendly and most importantly everybody was raising money for charity. Thank you to everybody at St John Rigby College who took the time to vote and kindly donated money.” Our pictures show Nadia modelling three outfits on the catwalk.

Animal care learners at the Wigan-based training provider, Sarah Gartland, Rebecca Whitling, Derek Pitcher and Liam Ashcroft travelled to Malta to experience working in a different country. During the two weeks, learners completed a work placement at a cat sanctuary, where the feed, cleaned and groomed the cats as well as had the responsibility of completing health checks and rehoming the cats. This work placement helped

the learners experience handling different animals as well as develop their practical handling skills, which forms part of their qualification. Nina Daly, Animal Care tutor who travelled to Malta with the learners said: “It was interesting for the learners to experience working in a cat sanctuary abroad with other young people from different countries. “Not only did this help the learners develop their animal welfare skills, it also helped their communication and team building skills, which will help strengthen their future job prospects.” As well as completing the work placement the learners

explored the island’s beaches, visited tourist attractions including an aquarium, and had the once in a lifetime opportunity to swim with dolphins. Whilst in Malta the learner had to cook, keep their accommodation tidy, learn how to look after themselves and use public transport. Sharon Ashcroft, mother of learner Liam Ashcroft, said: “I am so proud of Liam for going on the excursion. It was an opportunity of lifetime for him to go and it has done him the world of good. “This trip is the best thing that has ever happened to him; he has come back with confidence.” This excursion is part of

partnership work between ProCo and Everything is Possible, a non-for-profit organisation providing free international opportunities for young people via a European International Funded programme. More international projects have been planned for ProCo’s learners. Three construction learners travelled to Sweden at the end of April to work at a carpentry training centre and four animal care learners are working at a donkey sanctuary in Aruba for two weeks in June. Plans for Haigh Hall are gathering pace Courier

£12M A MASTERPLAN to rejuvenate the whole of Haigh Woodland Park, Wigan is gathering pace.

At the centre of the regeneration project is the £6m restoration of Haigh Hall. Detailed plans for the hall have been submitted by Contessa Hotels and will be put before Wigan Council’s planning committee in June. If approved, the plans will see the historic hall restored to its former glory and transformed into a luxury four-star boutique hotel complete with 30 bedrooms, a spa and a fitness centre. In addition, a detailed planning application is currently being developed for a new adventure play area which marks one of the first of many new exciting family facilities on the 250acre site. The winning concept from Wicksteed Playgrounds follows a competitive tender process to appoint a preferred contractor. Paul Kenny, cabinet member for Leisure and Resources at Wigan

Council, said: “I’m extremely pleased that the £12 million Haigh project is really coming to life. The hotel and play projects underline how serious we are about transforming Haigh. This heralds a new, golden age for what will become one of the North West’s most exciting green spaces. Importantly this investment programme will reduce the maintenance burden for Wigan Borough taxpayers by £8 million over the next decade.”

Proud

Craig Baker, Director of Contessa Hotels, said:“Our plans for Haigh Hall are progressing really well and we’re really proud to be part of such a unique and exciting project. The hall is steeped in history and we are excited about restoring and transforming it back to its very finest. As the cornerstone of the Haigh Woodland Park experience, Haigh Hall will be open to the public all year. The hall is one of the most iconic buildings of its type in the region and we look forward to seeing its regeneration take off.” Charlie Howard, managing director of

THE WIGAN COURIER -

Wicksteed Playgrounds, said: “We are delighted that all of the time and effort dedicated to designing the play area with Haigh Woodland Park has been recognised through our selection as preferred contractor. Wicksteed has been leading the UK play industry in designing, supplying and installing playgrounds for almost 100 years and I can honestly say the Haigh Hall Woodland Park design is one of the most impressive in the company’s long history.” Local schoolchildren and the Friends of Haigh Country Park group will continue to be involved in the planning of the adventure play area, which is expected to be installed by the autumn. When work starts it will mark the beginning of a three-year journey to transform Haigh Woodland Park. Wigan Council will invest around £4 million in i n f r a s t r u c t u r e improvements and new attractions within the 250 acres of woodland surrounding the hall, with phase one of the plans

Trust staff lead by example

WIGAN Leisure Culture Trust staff spent an afternoon litter picking at Haigh Country Park.

The group of staff filled more than 30 bags of rubbish from around the site following the Easter break.

Managing Director Pete Burt said: “We’re committed to being a ‘green’ organisation and where better to start than on our own doorstep? Staff at Haigh wanted to do their bit to help keep the park looking tidy and I’m really pleased with the results. Thank you to everyone who took part.” WLCT has recently been awarded ISO14001, a standard which helps organisations minimise their impact on the environment. As part of this scheme, staff are looking at ways they can help the company to become greener. Our picture above shows Trust staff during the litter pick.

Wigan Council up for top award

WIGAN COUNCIL has once again been nominated for one of the most prestigious prizes in local government – six months after an independent survey found a 50 per cent increase in resident satisfaction levels in the borough. The council is one of five authorities battling it out for the “Best Achieving Council” prize at the annual MJ Awards – which honours excellence in local government across the country. The council was a runner up at last year’s awards and will be up against Cheshire West and Chester Council, Glasgow City Council, Norwich City Council and Thurrock Council at this year’s awards. The nomination comes despite Wigan Council seeing its budget cut by 30 per cent –the third biggest cut to its budget of any local authority in the country according to the Financial Times. Since 2010, the council has wrestled with cuts of more than £100m, yet in the same period an independent survey found satisfaction with how the council runs services rose by 50 per

cent. Judges were impressed by the council’s strong performance across a range of services. Singled out for particular praise was the council’s drive towards creating greater selfreliance amongst its communities through The Deal and its consistently strong leadership. Donna Hall, chief executive of Wigan Council, explains: “Many of our residents will be familiar with The Deal by now – in essence it’s about promoting greater self-reliance in our communities, to help us balance the books and to encourage greater responsibility. “One of the initiatives to come out of The Deal is the Community Investment Fund, which has seen £5m offered to voluntary groups to help support communities across the borough. We are really thankful for the difference all of these groups make and in particular Barbara Nettleton from Sunshine House in Scholes, who is part of the team being interviewed by the judging panel today. “In addition to that, our Deal for Adult Social Care has seen services for adults transformed – we’re now having a conversation with service users to find out what they want to do and connecting them with the activities that

interest them in their local community. “This is saving us money, while improving the lives of our residents who have greater choice and flexibility. “There’s a long way to go, but if our recent residents survey if anything to go by I’m confident we’re on the right road. I’d like to thank residents for supporting us on this journey and staff for helping to lead the way and embrace the transformation.” Chair of Waterfield’s Bakery – one of the largest employers in Wigan Borough and chair of the Wigan Forward Board, Richard Waterfield, said: “I am delighted that Wigan Council has been nominated for the Best Achieving Council which is richly deserved. The council has managed to successfully implement savings across the borough with a positive impact on the local community by involving the private sector in delivering the strategy set by the leadership. “There is a genuine and achievable desire to improve the living standards of the people within the borough by bringing together all interested parties around the same table with the same agenda.” The overall winner will be announced on Thursday 18th June.

WIGAN YOUTH Zone has appointed experienced business and charity worker Bernard Edmunds to the Board.

Bernard, who has lived in Wigan Borough for nearly 30 years, will join the Youth Zone Board as a business ambassador.

He said: “Although I’m from the south originally, I have been in Wigan for years now and all of my children were raised here. “I’ve already been involved in helping to set up the UTC, but I really want to put more back into the young people of Wigan to help raise their aspirations and give them the right start in life. “I feel passionate about Wigan Youth Zone and the fantastic success it has achieved. I hope I can add value by bringing in more companies to support all the work the Youth Zone has achieved to date. “I firmly believe that Youth Zones are key to supporting young people in the UK, helping them to achieve a sense of purpose and teaching them vital life skills which will help them into employment. The work Wigan has done is really pioneering and sets the bench mark for others to follow.” Wigan Youth Zone board meet once a month on a voluntary basis to oversee all activity in the youth facility. They use their collective expertise to advise on any areas where

improvements can be made and look at what areas could be developed to benefit the young people of Wigan Borough further. As the renovation work takes shape, the Board are keen to focus on the Drumcroon development which will open later in the year. Wigan Youth Zone is now working with Wigan Council and partners to provide a digital skills hub in the building where young people can learn all the necessary web skills such as coding to arm them for their future careers. Bernard said: “Part of my role will be as business ambassador to engage the business community further, not only to support the Youth Zone in general, but to see if they could offer to support young people in the skills hub and the enterprise and

employability work that takes place. “Wigan has already set the benchmark for what can be achieved so far, but it is only with the support of the business community that we can really take Drumcroon to the next level. “ Bernard brings a wealth of business experience to the Youth Zone Board. His last role was as MD of McBride International and Bernard is also currently Independent director on a Bahrain board, which operates famous high street retail brands in major shopping malls. Bernard is also founder of the male cancer charity Men Matter that has Sir Bobby Charlton as its patron. Wigan Youth Zone General Manager John Harker said: “Wigan Youth Zone simply couldn’t operate without the collective skills, experience and wise

council of our board. Having someone with a wealth of business skills such as Bernard join at such a critical time for the development of Drumcroon is obviously priceless to us as a charity. “Bernard not only brings his decades of experience in the global business community but also his commitment to develop the skills of our future business leaders, the young people of Wigan Borough. We are delighted to welcome him to the team and look forward to working with him in the future.” For more information on how to support Wigan Youth Zone or the Drumcroon skills hub contact John Harker at or Bernard Edmunds at Our picture shows Bernard with Youth Zone General Manager John Harker.

Election storm over housing claims

THE WIGAN COURIER -

From: Mr Ray Whittingham Sir, The Standish Independent councillor George Fairhurst has sent personal letters to postal voters in which he states quite blatantly, all other candidates “are in favour of more houses in Standish” and that they are completely out of touch with the residents of Standish. He also states that he is the only candidate in this year’s local elections who is opposed to any more developments. I cannot speak for the other candidates but this is an outrageous lie. Every house in Standish will have received my election leaflet by now. Should anyone like to view my election leaflet, they can do so by emailing Ray4Standish@outlook.com or like Ray4Standish on Facebook and I will send them a copy. There is nothing in my leaflet that supports more developments whatsoever. I am vehemently opposed to more houses in Standish and on our surrounding Green Belt. Councillor Fairhurst states: “I was first elected in 2004; I have opposed all houses planned for Standish" "A vote for myself is a vote against more houses; it is a vote for someone who stands up for Standish in the Council Chamber"

If anyone reads the local press about the Standish Independent councillors’ performances within the Council Chamber, they will know that this is not true. The three Standish Independent councillors walk out of the chamber when they can't get their own way or disrupt proceedings during vital meetings. When asked to leave they have refused and the police have had to be called in to try and resolve the situation or remove them from the chamber. George Fairhurst also does not take any seats on any committees but still takes his full councillor’s allowance of £11,500 a year! Hardly standing up for Standish in the Council Chamber is it? Councillor George Fairhurst has been a councillor in Standish for 11 years and to say he is opposed to more houses is laughable. Almost 1,000 dwellings have been planned in Standish on his watch. What has he been doing whilst these properties were being planned? Just harping from the sidelines and not taking the fight to the developers, in my opinion. The Standish Independents also claim that by being a supporter of the nonpolitical Standish Voice group you must support more house building. Standish Voice has been formed to get

the best deal for Standish, as a result of the 1000 more houses that are coming to Standish. This is exactly because George Fairhurst and his family of councillors failed to prevent them in the first place! He has also been gloating around Standish that he has won three previous elections and will walk in this time, I hope the people of Standish will teach him a lesson that their goodwill cannot be taken for granted and give him the electoral shock he deserves! Yours, Ray Whittingham Conservative Candidate for Standish with Langtree ward

From: Mrs Debbie Parkinson Sir, The Standish Independent councillor George Fairhurst has written in his letter to Postal Voters that “ALL other candidates have said they are in FAVOUR of more houses in Standish”, and that he is “the ONLY candidate opposed to any more.” This is a blatant untruth, which your last edition’s leading article proved. Wigan Council has refused the recent application for 250 houses on the former Standish Golf Course, and that they will employ a leading Barrister to fight any appeal by the applicant, a

400026

decision I wholeheartedly support. As the Labour Party candidate, I will not only OPPOSE further large scale development in Standish, but pledge to work to see that all other applications are refused. Standish is Full! I will also work with the Neighbourhood Community group to ensure that very penny of the £5million the Council will get will be spent in Standish to improve our infrastructure and provide better recreation facilities for us all. The people of Standish need to know the depths that their current Councillor will sink to in order to get elected.

Yours , Debbie Parkinson, Labour Party Candidate Standish with Langtree ward.

Recycling rates rocket in Wigan

Gardeners at forefront of townʼs ever-improving record on the environment SPRING HAS sprung and green-fingered gardeners across Wigan Borough are helping recycling rates rocket.

Green bin recycling rates in the borough have doubled in the past week as the sun shines and gardens are tidied up. Wigan Council has praised residents for quickly getting back into using their green bins. As part of The Deal, the more people recycle the more money the council saves helping it to freeze council tax and save residents money. The council collects over 21,000 tonnes of organic waste in green bins from homes every year all of which is turned to compost. As part of ‘International Compost Awareness Week’, Wigan Council is

urging more residents to “go green” and recycle food as well as garden waste. Ellen Hardaker, pictured, Wigan Council’s recycling education officer, said: “It’s fantastic that residents across the borough have so quickly got back into using their green bins. “Recycling garden and food waste in the green bin is really important as it saves that waste from going to landfill and it also has a very important role to play in helping grow our future food.” Green bins are used for garden waste such as leaves, twigs and grass as well as leftover food (cooked or raw), tea bags and egg shells. The organic waste is taken to a special site out of the borough where the

waste is shredded and put into a large container where it is left for two to four weeks. Tiny organisms break down the waste and as it rots it can heat up to 70°C making the composting process even quicker. The compost is then left outside for up to three months and is then used by farmers as a soil conditioner to help grow crops. To help people recycle as much as possible, residents are provided with a silver caddy to collect leftover food inside the house which can be emptied into the green bin. Special compostable caddy liners can be obtained from several outlets across the borough free of charge. Alternatively, people can

folks of Wigan had, as always, made a huge contribution to the funds raised for charitable purposes across the Christmas period. Santa had again been a popular visitor to the local streets and supermarkets. This money has already been donated or earmarked to be given to charitable organisations and voluntary groups within our town. Money from other activities that have been undertaken, together with the contributions from our own members have been used to provide food and

shelter in poorer areas of the world and in campaigns such as the eradication of polio and aid for disaster areas with emergency supplies. Jim also stressed that the club was very active locally in many other aspects including education via 'Youth Speaks ''Junior Speaks” and health campaigns such as 'Stroke Awareness Day'. Through Dragons Den and Community Day the club is able to support the smaller charities within Wigan and he expressed the club's appreciation of the

use a layer of newspaper to line their caddy or simply put the food straight into the green bin. Residents are urged not to use plastic bags as these are not compostable. A full list of caddy liner outlets can be found at www.wigan.gov.uk The ‘Get Composting’ website at www.getcomposting.com

also gives further advice on how to make compost at home. Wigan Council is to open its new organic waste station later in the year which will help boost recycling rates further. For further information on what can and can’t go in each bin log on to: www.wigan.gov.uk/recycl ing.

Sir Ian gets Wigan Star award

KNOWN AROUND the world from his time in Middle Earth on stage in London or New York or walking the cobbles of Weatherfield, Sir Ian McKellen’s next starring role will take place in his hometown of Wigan. Sir Ian will be the next person to be honoured with a star which will go in pride of place on Believe Square in the town centre. The 75-year-old will return to Wigan Borough this summer to personally accept his accolade at a celebration of a career which has so far spanned more than 50 years. He lived in Wigan from the age of three to 11 in a semidetached house across the road from Mesnes Park. He has spoken about his love of the brass bands playing in the park on summer Sundays and scoring for the cricket team and is a place where he has

returned over the years. Sir Ian has said seeing traders pedal their wares in the Market Square was one of the things that first interested in acting: that and the Frank Fortescue Players at the Hippodrome. He also often recalls Wigan’s great sense of community, particularly through its host of communal venues including the municipal baths, cinemas and the children’s library which he often attended. This passion for libraries and educating young people has also inspired many people across Wigan Borough to visit libraries and continue with their learning. Famous for his performances in Macbeth, Othello, Richard III and King Lear, Sir Ian’s first encounter with Shakespeare was a performance of Twelfth Night by amateurs at Wigan Little Theatre. But to most he will be best-known as Magneto in the XMen films and as Gandalf in the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit trilogies. Lord Peter Smith, Leader of Wigan Council, said: “It is an immense privilege for Wigan Council to bestow this honour on a great actor of film and theatre. “Sir Ian McKellen is rightly one of this town’s most loved

sons who has brought the magic of stage and screen to life to so many people around the world. There are few better ambassadors for the town having inspired people across Wigan Borough in so many ways including his active work campaigning for equal rights for LGBT community and as a

founder of Stonewall.” Sir Ian said: “I am looking forward to returning to Wigan, which holds so many special memories, for this honour. It will be fascinating to see how the town has developed since 1951, when our family moved to Bolton. If only the Hippodrome was still there!"

Future Medics on Air at Wrightington Hospital

FUTURE Medical students Lewis Edwards-Yates and Sara Cooksey were interviewed live on air by Wrightington Hospital Radio DJ Kevin Riley to mark the completion of their work experience placements.

The St John Rigby College Future Medical students have recently completed a block work placement that has seen them work in a range of departments from Admissions through to Theatre.

Lewis and Sara were asked a range of topical questions about the medical student programme, what their plans are for the future and how the experience has enabled them to gain a competitive advantage when making applications to Medical School. Lewis aims to study Medicine at Manchester University and has ambitions of becoming a GP. “The Medic Programme at St John Rigby College has been fantastic. I have had some wonderful experiences. To stand next to a surgeon carrying out a hip-replacement procedure in the hospital that pioneered the procedure was a unique and awe inspiring experience. It is only by being part of this course at St John Rigby College that I

have been given this opportunity.” Head of Science and Future Medic Co-ordinator Victoria Brown said “The St John Rigby College Future Medical Student Programme is an excellent opportunity for those young people who are considering a career in Medicine. The programme is designed to challenge students to be the best they possibly can be. The partnership the College has with Wrightinton Hospital is a vital component of the programme and it is testament to the quality of students who are part of this course that their time at the hospital is so highly valued.” Principal Peter McGhee said “This is the third year of this very successful programme which provides students with a competitive advantage when making applications to medical school. Over the past few years St John Rigby College students have regularly broken all achievement and high-grade records. One of the key strategies we have used to achieve these excellent results has been to introduce a series of “Futures Programmes”. Each of these has a links to employers and University. Linking employment, HE and college studies has enabled us to ensure that our students are leaving St John Rigby College with not just the best grades they possibly can, but also a broad skill set that will set them up for life”.

This is a great example of how the community of Standish can pull together for the good of all. It gives me tremendous confidence that by working in such a co-operative spirit, when decisions on the priorities for the £5million the Council gets from the new housing have to be made, we will be able to sit down together and work out how to use it best for the benefit of everyone in Standish.”

Wigan Streetgames wins national award WIGAN STREETGAMES Network has been awarded Securing the Future by national sports charity StreetGames in recognition of the project’s contribution to the local area.

Wigan Warriors round up

AT the time of this writing, Wigan are third in the Super League table (tonight’s match against Hull KR hasn’t kicked off yet), and in the last month have taken the prize scalps of two old foes, both St Helens and Warrington. Does this mean they have put their shaky start to 2015 behind them? Well, all is not completely well in the Cherry and White garden. The Warriors’ dismal away form continues to dog them, and keeps acting to prevent any sign that a fullscale recovery is now under way. They lined up against Wakefield at Belle Vue last week knowing that they hadn’t won away from home for nine months. This hoodoo was put to rest, Wigan overcoming the Wildcats by 22-40. But it was far from convincing. An extremely average home team managed to run in four tries against a Wigan team who yet again were an error-strewn shadow of the force they usually are at home.

Firstly

But first things first. It can’t all be brickbats this week. Far from it. The night of April 16 was a much better one for Wigan fans, and a great occasion on which to be at the DW Stadium. It wasn’t just that Wigan won a convincing 30-20 victory over the Wire, but the much anticipated announcement of Sam Tomkins’s return in 2016 was made at half-time amid great fanfare, Chairman Ian Lenagan explaining the situation to the fans via the big screen, to the accompaniment of air raid sirens. The club pulled the

Paul Finch is

The Insider

whole thing off with aplomb, and not for the first time. If you remember … the recapture of Joel Tomkins was also mentioned half way through a match, the player himself coming out onto the pitch to sign his contract, amid wild cheers from the surprised terraces. The return of Sam, however, is much more significant, in my view.

Lost players

A couple of years ago it looked as if the British game’s best players were all headed to distant fields. The loss of Joel was very galling. Players lost to Rugby Union aren’t just lost to Wigan, they are lost to the game as a whole. But it is increasingly evident that top RL players are not necessarily going to make top RU players. To my mind only Jason Robinson, who was one of the world’s best brokenfield runners in any code, has hit the real heights in the 15-a-side game. Most of the others have been soso, while a few have been abject failures. This is no criticism of the players; it simply illustrates the vast but often unseen differences between the two sports. It is rarely a given that just because you are good at one you will automatically be good at the other. And presumably, when so much money is involved, this penny will eventually start to drop with the Rugby Union, whose scouts are still circling so many of our Rugby League clubs. But Joel’s return ultimately wasn’t that unexpected, whereas the permanent loss of younger brother Sam was a much more likely prospect. I have no doubt that going to Australia is still the ultimate ambition of many

Wigan Warriors from the Inside Out...

of today’s players and their agents. It signifies a big payday, a glare of careerenhancing publicity, and unlike heading to RU, which whether rightly or wrongly is seen by many RL fans as a softer option, it will only do your reputation as a player a power of good. In fact, it’s now become fashionable in certain parochial quarters of RL fandom to claim that good players in the UK will never actually become great players unless they prove themselves in the toughest league on Earth. Well, no one will be able to say that about Sam Tomkins, who, when he returns to Wigan, will have done two years in the NRL, during which period he has caught the eye many times. All of which goes to underline my original point that Sam coming back to Wigan is a major event. He hasn’t waited until his best years are over, as Adrian Morley and Gareth Ellis appeared to do, and has fulfilled his promise to the cub who let him go early on his original contract, i.e. Wigan, that he would return to play for them.

Return

But it’s also been a vindication of Ian Lenagan, who a couple of years ago appeared to preside over the unexpected departure of three major talents – not just the Tomkins brothers, but Lee Mossop as well – which aroused the ire of keyboard warriors from Standish to Platt Bridge. Though even the most ardent Lenagan supporters must have been worried and baffled by this, and perhaps weren’t entirely convinced by the chairman’s assurances that all these players would return and that Wigan would have first refusal. Well … all three now

have. Which is a fantastic morale-booster both for the club and the fans. Of course, neither we nor Lenagan can afford to assume this will happen every time, and the RU and NRL are still going to come sniffing, but it now looks as if the RFL, at long last, is going to take action to try and stem the tide of defections.

The Super League clubs are convening in June to contemplate the introduction of a marqueeplayer ruling in 2016, which would empower each team to pay one player in their squad a salary discounted from the current salary cap. Potentially, if the club can afford it, this might be an enormous amount of money. As I understand it, this could apply to either a player currently employed by said club, or a completely new player – in effect, allow them to make a massive signing, as in the good old days. The obvious immediate advantage is that this will enable clubs like Wigan to compete more robustly with the glamorous alternative of the NRL and the seemingly bottomless pockets of RU. Not surprisingly, the rumours are already running like wildfire. Who will Wigan sign? Well, we shouldn’t run before our horses to market. At this stage it’s only a proposal. However, as only seven of the 12 Super League clubs need to vote in favour, I suspect it will go through. Here’s hoping, or what.

Wigan StreetGames Network received the award at the annual StreetGames National Awards Night last week, held at the University of Warwick, which highlights the admirable work being carried out by community projects across the UK. The awards ceremony also serves to recognise the exceptional staff and volunteers who are dedicated to delivering sport to young people in disadvantaged areas. Wigan StreetGames Network is a partnership of four organisations (Communities United Project, WLCT – which delivers community sports opportunities on behalf of Wigan Council, Wigan Warriors Community Foundation and Leigh Centurions Community Foundation) working together to ensure sustainable community sport. The partnership delivers 10 Doorstep Sports Clubs and two Us Girls sessions plus several other projects which utilise the StreetGames principles. In total, an average of 600 young people attend sessions across Wigan each week. Wigan StreetGames Network was chosen from nearly a thousand projects from across the country with

WINSTANLEY College has teamed up in a unique partnership with Wigan Warriors to allow talented young rugby players the chance to complete A-levels alongside playing and training for the professional Rugby League team. The partnership means players will have a timetable that will allow them to study for three A-levels at the College as well as have allocated time for training at Wigan Warriors.

Winstanley College is the perfect choice of partner for the team. The College has a long history of sporting excellence and already has two under 19’s Wigan Warriors players studying with them, Kyle Shelford and Max Dudley. Not only that, it is a fantastic opportunity for players to study with the College which is consistently top in the North West for A-level results and is also in the top five Sixth Form College’s nationally. Kyle, 18, from Orrell, who went to St Peter’s High School, is now studying for his PE, Human Biology and Business Studies A-levels at the College. He said: “It can be hard trying to juggle study with training so having it scheduled into the college day will really benefit young players in the future.” Max, 17, from Billinge, who attended Up Holland High School, is studying PE, Chemistry, Human Biology and Psychology at the College. He added: “Doing A-levels alongside rugby opens up more opportunities for your future.

Wigan Athletic Community Trust enough.” Thomas Drake, Community Cohesion Co-ordinator at Wigan Athletic Community Trust said: “We’re extremely proud of Nathan - he is proof that with a lot of hard work and determination you can achieve your goals. We really hope this opportunity leads to bigger and better things for him.” As part of the Game On programme, Nathan and his team mates came out as worthy winners against four other teams from across the country to represent England in the Coalfields Regeneration Trust’s Game On Home International Tournament against teams from Wales and Scotland. Providing activities at times when young people may otherwise be engaging in antisocial behaviour or even low level crime, Game On has provided over 70 children and young adults across Wigan

with access to a training programme that instead teaches them about sport, team work and social interaction. Thomas adds: “Game On has had a massive impact on the local community. The introduction of football on a weekly basis has ensured that each young person has had the chance to engage in a diversionary activity. The programme has helped prevent what was becoming a continuous cycle of anti-social behaviour in the local area.” In a report delivered by Coalfields Regeneration Trust it was found that more than 700 children throughout England, including those living in the most deprived areas of Wigan, have participated in Game On since its launch in 2013. Head of Operations (England) at Coalfields Regeneration Trust, Andy Lock said: “Game On attracts youngsters who are not only interested in sport but are also

The partnership between Winstanley and Wigan Warriors will make this much more accessible.” Matthew Peet, Head of Youth Performance at Wigan Warriors summed up the exciting new venture: “As part of the club’s long-term youth development strategy, Wigan Warriors is committed to ensuring that a comprehensive education programme is offered to all players within our system. The range of education programmes not only gives an outstanding opportunity for second careers outside of Rugby League, they also maximise players’ development via the integrated delivery model and qualifications that underpin sporting excellence. “The partnership with Winstanley College unites two organisations that have a shared philosophy of continual improvement of the athlete and the person.” Our picture shows Max Dudley and Kyle Shelford at Winstanley College.

Sam is coming home to Wigan

SAM TOMKINS is on his way back to Wigan. The Warriors made the announcement at half time in the home win over Warrington on April 16th, to the clear delight of the home crowd and boos from the Wire faithful! Ian Leneghan has agreed a transfer fee in excess of £200,000 and Sam will have a fouryear contract at the DW. Sam will don the cherry and white colours in the 2016 season after two years in the NRL with New Zealand Warriors. Sam scored 144 tries in 152 games for Wigan before leaving to join New Zealand Warriors after helping Wigan winning the double in 2013. The former Wigan St Patrick’s amateur has enjoyed success Down Under and played in every Vodafone Warriors game in 2014 scoring 13 tries, amassing 13 try assists and 108 tackle busts – the fourth highest in the NRL.

Chairman Ian Lenagan said: “This is another tremendous signing for the Wigan Club and only serves to justify our policy of allowing players to experience other competitions whilst always keeping the option available for them to return to the Club in the future.” Sam said: “I am really happy to have this sorted and to be returning home to Wigan. All of my friends and family live in Wigan, a lot of them play for Wigan. It really was a no-brainer for me when I sat down and thought about things. “It’s been a fantastic experience to test myself in the NRL but the reality is I am 13,000 miles away from my friends and family. When I left Wigan I always knew in my heart that I would return to play for the Club one day and I am very excited at the thought of returning to the DW Stadium and pulling on that famous jersey once again. “I have really enjoyed my time in New Zealand and can’t thank everyone enough here as they have all done so much to make me feel welcome here since my arrival last year. My sole focus for the remainder of 2015 is to help the Warriors make the play-offs as we look to mount a serious challenge for the NRL Premiership.” Coach Shaun Wane added: “Once I heard that Sam was looking to come back to England next year I knew we had to pull out all the stops to have him here. He is one of our own and a truly world class player. Sam knows what we are all about here at Wigan.”

criticism she reached the top of her game. Sue also engaged those who aren’t trying to make it as professional athletes by reinforcing the skills that will gain by participating such as responsibility, confidence, time management, sportsmanship and commitment. In the afternoon, she took the girls’ football team on the 3G pitch for a training session and then watched them used the skills they had learnt in a game. At the end of the game, Sue gave them

analysis of their play, giving them positive and constructive feedback. Alyson Hastie, College Sports Maker, said, “Sue visited the College as part of Sport England’s National Lottery funded project, ‘Sportivate.’ She was so inspirational for the girls and talked about how she overcame the challenges that female athletes face.
