Success beckons for IPad entrepreneurs

WRIGHTINGTON sisters Liz and Cate Beattie are the brains behind an exciting invention that looks set to take the world of IPad users by storm. They have developed a special protective cover for the increasingly popular machine that protects it from damage if dropped or thrown. The product is called Tabtoob, and full details about the exciting invention, and the opportunity to order one of these groundbreaking products, can be found on the company’s new website www.tabtoob.com Tabtoob is a sturdy plastic insulation based cover that came in the first instance as an answer to the challenges posed by young users of IPads with challenging behaviour or physical disability. Both sisters are teachers by profession, with Liz working as a speech and language therapist with children with severe learning disabilities in Chorley. “I was very conscious that we were having to send expensive IPads for repair after the children had

email: info@courier-online.net

damaged them accidentally, and came up with an idea to give the IPad all round protection,,” Liz told the Courier. Inspired by the type of head protection now very popular with rugby players, Liz put together pipe lagging and dog balls and fitted them to her IPad: “ It looked clumsy and of course the materials weren’t right, she said, but I was fortunate to have a neighbour who specialise in sports protection gear, and between us we were able to build a prototype in appropriate

materials, mainly EVA plastic, which absorbs the momentum from drops and falls“ The Tabtoob is specially constructed to allow use of the camera and the screen is, of course, fully accessible. Liz was joined by Cate in the early stages of the product’s life, and the two went about introducing schools and teachers to Tabtoob: The first production run was just ten, and it proved an immediate hit. Liz and Cate have now had more than 3,000 Tabtoobs produced.

Said Cate: “Schools have really warmed to the Tabtoob as a means of protecting what is a very valuable asset. The Tabtoob makes the Ipad very secure….” Cate proceeded to demonstrate by throwing her IPad around the Courier office, without so much as a scratch. The deep plastic armour of Tabtoob protects the edges of the machine, and a special removable screen protector looks after the most vulnerable part of the IPad. The Tabtoob has another advantage in that its chunky design makes it easy to hold, and reduces incidences of dropping when in the hands of youngsters. Now Tabtoob has been endorsed and recommended by MENCAP, Autism UK, and CDKL5UK as the best iPad protective case. The tabstrap, which comes

at an extra cost, allows users bagless access to their iPad. Tabtoob comes with a screen protector which cleverly doubles as a stand, just perfect for hands free use. Tabtoob is now making a big impact in the education sector, and the Beattie sisters have plans to export the product to run alongside the booming market worldwide for the IPad product: “ We have been working on Tabtoob for two years,” said Liz, “and we are now looking to manufacture in the UK, provide colour options for users, and are supporting the CDKL5UK charity.” More information about Tabtoob can be had by visiting the website w w w. t a b t o o b . c o m , emailing Liz and Cate on info@tabtoob.com, or calling 01942 829908.

Riders get on their bikes for Prescott Foundation

THE FORMER veteran players of Wigan Rugby Union club and friends continued their annual summer charity bike riding campaign when more than seventy riders cycled from Higher Wheelton, near Blackburn, to Sams Bar in Scholes to raise £1,750 for the Steve Prescott Foundation, which support Christies and Try Assist.

It was a particularly poignant ride as it was the first one since Steve’s untimely death last year, as he had previously joined the riders on their annual fund-raising quest.

In 2006 the St. Helen star was diagnosed with a rare form of stomach cancer and was given months to live. He set up the Steve Prescott Foundation in 2007, and went on to organise a series of money-raising initiatives.

Steve raised almost half a million pounds for charity through the foundation, and was awarded an MBE in 2009 for his efforts. After a long battle with the disease, he died in 2013, aged 39.The riders were joined on the ride by Steve’s former team-mate and Saints legend Chris Joynt who paid tribute to the riders for their fund raising efforts for such a worthwhile cause Since starting their fund-raising rides in 2006 the ‘Vets’ have now incredibly raised more than £35,000 for worthwhile causes. They complete their ‘trilogy’ of summer charity bike rides on Saturday August 2nd with a leisurely ride from Heaton Bridge back to Wigan in aid of Derian House Childrens’ Hospice in Chorley. All the rides are open to everyone, are all off road, are a great day out and of course, it’s all in a good cause. Further information on the next ride is on the Vets’ Facebook page. Our photo show the riders having a well earned drink at Sams Bar on completion of their trek!

Community fete on its way

THIS year, Shevington and District Community Fete will take place on Saturday 2nd August. It will be held on and around Shevington Recreation Ground.

The Committee are pleased to announce that Ian Anthony, UK’s premier Tom Jones tribute act, will be performing the official opening of the Fete. During the day, Ian will be singing as Tom Jones – an act not to be missed!!!!!!

There will be many, varied stalls and attractions along the recreation ground perimeter path, including, once again, a food quarter, which was very popular last year! Other regular favourites such as the children’s races, tug-o-war, welly throw and Orrell Juniors RUFC assault course will take place on the recreation ground. Children’s fairground rides, and various stalls and attractions will appear in and around the Methodist Church and church hall. Shevington Gardening Club’s annual Flower, Vegetable and Produce show will be presented in the Youth and community centre. St.Anne’s Church Hall will once again be hosting a craft fair. In total, across all venues, there will be over fifty stalls!!!!!!! There also will be several refreshment outlets in the three venue buildings. New for Fete 2014 are the following attractions:- Mountain Monkeys are setting up their Climbing Tower; Wigan Urban Farm will be bringing chickens, ducks, guinea pigs and reptiles; SKILS partnership will have photo opportunities, both as Superheroes, and with birds of prey; Shevington Football Club will have a penalty shoot game; Wigan and Leigh Housing are providing a coconut shie. Shevington Gardening Club’s 30th Annual Flower, Vegetable and Produce Show will also

2

take place. As in recent years, the Show will be presented in Shevington and District Youth and Community Centre in Highfield Avenue [next to the Methodist Church..] There are classes to be enters for flowers, vegetables, home produce [jams, cakes etc.] photography, and arts and crafts. You do not have to be an expert to enter, as there are “novice” classes covering flowers, vegetables and home produce. Club members are always on hand to advise and assist in setting out your exhibits, so why not come along and have a go! You can take out a half-year membership of the club on the day of the show. This will be valid until and including January 2015. The Club holds monthly meetings, with guest speakers, first Monday of every month at St. Anne’s Parish Hall in Church Lane. Schedules showing all classes of exhibit are available from outlets around the village, or contact Ted Unwin at tedunwin@talktalk.net or Eileen Longmore at brileen.longmore@blueyonder.co.uk for further information. We look forward to seeing you all on the day! Our ever-popular, free “Park-and-Ride” facility will be operating between the Fete venue, and the car parks at Shevington High School and Shevington Surgery in Houghton Lane. This service is generously provided by Appley Bridge Taxis. As you can see, the organising committee have been working hard to ensure that the Fete and Gardening show remains fresh and attractive to residents of all ages. Please come along on the day, and have a super day out with your family!

The cutting of the ribbon was performed by Cooperative Manager Tracey Aspen and Councillor George Fairhurst. Staff, volunteers and Community Centre organisers were treated to a piece of celebration cake and a glass of wine to mark the occasion. Fitness fans raise £1,000 for Hospice

A GRUELLING 10-hour fitness session at an Ince gym raised over £1,000 for Wigan and Leigh Hospice.

CrossFit Wigan held a WODathon (Workout Of the Day) event when they invited gym members and local residents to make a donation in return for joining a workout session. Ten one-hour sessions were held every hour from 8am to 5pm and £966 was raised which gym member and owner of Kiwi Nurseries, Christian Wilson, boosted to £1,001.

Owner Mike Reid, coach Jonathan Wareing and members Traci Robbins, Mike Wills, Scott Davies and Angela Sweeney pushed themselves to the limit to complete all ten sessions. Mike said: “Over 100 people came and whether they turned up to watch or to take part everyone made a donation and I’m especially grateful to Christian who helped to push the grand total over the £1,000 mark. “We raised about £750 for the Hospice last year but we have more members this year and people have been even more generous because they realise it’s a tough challenge and that we do it for the Hospice.” Our picture shows Mike Reid from CrossFit Wigan with the cheque.

including: making top hats, having a delicious barbeque on the school playground, holding a special assembly to commemorate the occasion and also learning about the history of our school. Adding on to this, the newly elected Mayor of Wigan (Councillor Phyllis Cullen) attended our assembly.

Wigan Ladies Guild report We have done many things to celebrate

The school has been opened for 200 years and first opened its doors in 1814. It is still standing in 2014. The school has been extended twice. Firstly in the 1920’s and again in the 1970’s. A swimming pool was inserted in the 1960’s and removed in the 1980’s; it is now the courtyard. Our school has had a variety of names, for instance: Broad o’th lane school, Shevington Mixed School, Shevington infants/junior school, Shevington council school, Shevington County Primary School and it is now called Shevington Community Primary school. Year 6 pupil Alexandra Henderson quoted, “Throughout the week, it was exciting and enjoyable as we learned many historical facts of our school.” Also, our Head- teacher (Mrs Adams) commented, “We may only be a little school, but we have a big history, which we are extremely proud of. I was honoured to have the Mayor of Wigan attend our assembly, particularly as the year 6 children had put an enormous amount of effort into the assembly”. TYPICAL English weather! One day inclement weather with pouring rain and four days later rising temperatures with brilliant sunshine.

Four stalwarts of the Guild chose the wrong day to set off on a sponsored walk in aid of our chosen charity, Alzheimers Research UK.

Setting off from the DW Stadium and walking along the canal to Appley Bridge they stopped at a local hostelry for lunch before returning by the same muddy route - a round trip of approx 8-9 miles in pouring rain. As you can see by the photograph they arrived soaked to the skin. A few days later 30 plus ladies went on an organised trip to The Stones and Roses Garden at White Coppice. This is a member of the National Garden Scheme which is opened by appointment in aid of Charity. This particular garden with wonderful views has rose gardens, fountains, waterfalls and colourful herbaceous borders. Following a walk around the garden we enjoyed an afternoon cream tea sitting out in glorious sunshine. Ideal weather for a visit to a beautiful venue. The outing was over far too quickly and then it was the journey home through narrow twisty roads and picturesque countryside. Despite there being no meetings of the Guild in July, ladies have also enjoyed a lunch at The Owls and a Strawberry Tea in aid of our Charity. If you are interested in finding out more details regarding a very friendly and active group please contact Loraine on 01942 245228. Thumbs up for school dinners Courier

6

THE WIGAN COURIER -

PARENTS in Wigan Borough were invited to swap their packed lunches for school dinners on Monday July 14th as the council gets ready to launch the free school meals programme.

As of September, all reception, year one and year two children will be eligible to receive free school meals as part of the government’s new initiative for Universal Infant Free School Meals. Each household could save £418 a year per child.

While pink custard and chicken drummers are a thing of the past, parents are still sceptical when it comes to free meals, which is why Wigan Council invited them to take the taste test. Saeka Aziz-Young, 32, from Atherton, brought her four-yearold son, Ben Aziz-Young, along to the school meal taster day at Astley’s St Stephen’s Primary School. Saeka said: “I didn’t know much about free school meals before today, we had been sent a taster menu but until you get to see the full menu you don’t realise how diverse it is. There’s a variety of food available and school dinners have certainly come a long way since I was at school. I was sceptical at first, when you’re my age you think about school dinners and you think sloppy mash. Today’s changed my mind. The food is healthy and tasty and best of all, free. Before today I would’ve probably been making packed lunches for Ben but now I have seen what the school can offer him and knowing it won’t cost me a penny, I will certainly be considering school dinners for my child.” School meals, provided by the council’s Metrofresh team, are tailored to each school and offer a variety of healthy options,

designed to give children the best start in life. The universal meals programme, worth £600m nationally, is being introduced after successful trials in Newham and Durham found that free school meals helped increase concentration levels and improved attainment. Councillor Joanne Platt, cabinet member for children and families, said: “We’re urging parents to apply for free school meals even if their child is already eligible as this is linked to Pupil Premium funding – a pot of money the Government has agreed to reimburse schools. For each child signed up, £1300 per annum will be reinvested in the school and will go towards schools trips, equipment and so on. To apply visit www.wigan.gov.uk/Resident/Benefit-Grants/Free-school-mealsaspx Metrofresh have been involved on the All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on School Food, one of only a few Local Authorities to be represented and are recognised as one of only twelve Local Authorites “Leading the Way.” To prepare for the introduction of universal infant free school meals, Metrofresh set up a steering group to ensure everyone had an input, including school cooks, head teachers, business managers, public health, elected members and other council departments. This joined up approach has enabled the council to be more than ready for September. This venture was in response to the loss of a fellow classmate’s father from cancer last year. The pupils raised money by making and selling Loom Bands which proved very popular and in great demand. They even made them to order in peoples favourites colours and world cup teams! Wigan Council unveils new deal for leisure Courier

7

A NEW deal was unveiled earlier in July and it will see Wigan Council work much closer with its leisure partner Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust (WLCT).

At a meeting of its cabinet, Wigan Council committed to strengthening its partnership with WLCT as part of a renewed drive to get more people in the borough healthy and active. The deal also means the council can keep the cost of visiting leisure facilities among the lowest in the region, as well as keeping Council Tax bills frozen at the same time. As part of the deal, WLCT will focus more on managing the services that have the greatest impact on health, such as leisure centres, Sports Development and its Active Living programme. The council has also committed to a significant investment programme in sports and leisure facilities,

THE WIGAN COURIER -

such as Howe Bridge and Robin Park sports centre with further details announced soon. Some services that are currently delivered by WLCT, such as libraries, heritage and the teams that maintain the borough’s green spaces, as well as some support services, will move back to the council. This will allow the council to modernise these services in line with significant reviews that are already underway. The future management of the borough’s parks including Haigh Country Park will also be reviewed to see how best they can be managed for the benefit of users. Cllr Paul Kenny, Cabinet Member for Leisure at Wigan Council said: “The health and well-being of Wigan Borough residents is our top priority. By allowing WLCT to focus completely on health and leisure activities, we believe together we can build on their excellent track record of increasing

advertise in full colour at NO extra cost - call 01257

the levels of participation in sport and activities in the borough. We see this as a strengthening of our partnership which will help people to live longer, happier and healthier lives. “At the same time, the council still needs to save a further £40million by 2016/17 so this new relationship must provide value for money for Wigan Borough residents. This review is consistent with our policy to drive down the cost of services, by working more efficiently. It also helps us to achieve our commitment to keep Council Tax frozen. By bringing some services back in house, where there is a natural fit with our other services, we believe we can make significant savings while protecting and improving frontline services.” Andy Wiggans, Chairman of WLCT, said: “We are extremely proud of the achievements made over the past decade here in Wigan Borough and are delighted that our partnership with the council will continue and with the associated investment plans. Fundamental to this new working relationship is a renewed focus on supporting residents to make informed lifestyle choices and, as part of The Deal, we will carry on working hard to help residents live healthier, happier lives through a sustainable leisure, health and wellbeing offer.” Funding for public services has changed dramatically since WLCT was formed in 2003, the new deal offers the best financial package in operating the council’s services. Wigan Borough residents will only see subtle changes to the way services are provided initially. The aim is to complete the new deal by April 2015. Wigan MP Lisa Nandy writes for the Courier

Lets get healthier together

WITH the sunshine blazing and the Commonwealth Games underway, I’m sure lots of people will be exercising more and more over the coming weeks, or at least thinking about exercise anyway!

Heat stroke and dehydration are common problems during prolonged hot spells and NHS staff will be ready to help those who are struggling to cope with the soaring temperatures. Whilst we are on the subject of the NHS, I should mention a debate I contributed to in Parliament this week on the Healthier Together consultation. When I asked about the consultation’s failure to account for specific health

and transport issues we face here in Wigan, Health Minister Norman Lamb simply dodged the question and accused me of opposing specialised services. The truth is that, despite all of the government’s talk about devolving power to local communities, this consultation feels very much like a centrally driven, top down process with little or no information available on who will be taking the key decisions and when. As the largest Borough in Greater Manchester, it is crucial that people in Wigan take this opportunity to have their say on the future of NHS services in our area. Please take the time to go online at: healthiertogethergm.nhs.uk to make your views known and ensure that we retain our NHS and that it has the services we both deserve and require. If you have any questions or would like any further information you can always contact my office and they will be happy to help.

CHURCHES together in Orrell are holding a day of prayer at St. Luke's Church , Lodge Road, Orrell on Monday 4th August 2014 to mark the World War One

anniversary - all welcome. Special services will be held at 9am and 6 p.m. and the church will be open throughout the day. Tea & coffee will be available.

Although for most of us, the heat brings a welcome change and opportunities to socialise, it is also important to remember that for others, particularly the elderly, the heat can cause real difficulties.

WHAT a remarkable opening gig for the Wigan Jazz Festival.

Expectation ran high as 1,250 people crowded into the Robin Park venue on a hot, steamy night, drawn by the charismatic figure of one of the country’s most popular musicians, Jools Holland. And boy, we weren’t disappointed. This was a powerhouse performance from Jools and his uber-talented Rhythm and Blues Orchestra, aided by some stellar guest performances from legends Marc Almond, Melanie C, and a scorching contribution by the magnificent soul singer Ruby Turner. There’s no doubt who is the boss in this outfit - right from the first punchy chords and artful arpeggios on the piano, Jools drove the gig forward, jazz, blues, boogie-woogie, a

Jools Holland and his Rhythm and Blues Orchestra With special guests Marc Almond, Melanie C, and Ruby Turner Robin Park Thursday July 10th

solid two hours of feel-good music that had an ecstatic Wigan audience on its feet. In fact, the band were simply a group of travelling party animals who just happen to play instruments, led by a charismatic preacher of the rhythm and blues religion who suddenly found themselves in a room with 1,250 other party animals… The gig simply rolled along, tight beginnings and endings, great links from the great man, and an increasing tempo and virtuosity in both playing and vocal performances which ended with Ruby Turner raising the roof. It was particularly satisfying to be reminded of the vocal talents of Marc Almond and Melanie C, who both received, quite rightly, a rapturous reception as they returned to their

AJ Brown and his Band

roots. Live performance from seasoned and talented singers like these two can’t really be beaten…the blue ribbon belonged to the show-stopper Ruby Turner, who turned in a performance of stunning power and emotion that rocked the joint. Before the gig I met Keith Bergman, who had a smile on his face as wide as the Cheshire Cat - I told him how much I was looking forward to seeing the Maestro and his band. Keith’s response? “You can’t be looking forward to this more than Jools is….” My goodness, how it showed. A great first night - enduring memory was passing the Boss, Ian Darrington, on the way out. For once, he was stunned into silence by what he’d witnessed and heard…….(Mark Ashley)

Robin Park - Friday 11th July

I’VE BEEN fortunate enough to watch the development of this fine young musician over the last few years. He’s a rare talent, principally a soulful vocalist, but also an accomplished instrumentalist and increasingly a fine songwriter.

AJ kicked it all off under the Wigan Youth Jazz umbrella of Ian Darrington as a singer up front in 2008, and the two men have forged a string bond in the last few years, Ian acting as AJ’s impresario, publicist and mentor, watching like the rest of us as the young man he championed years ago matured into his own very specific niche on the UK jazz scene. It was once again a big turnout on a Friday lunchtime at Robin Park, AJ’s audience included a cohort of young epode from several Wigan schools who were given an excellent introduction to the jazz style, both playing and singing. It was polished and passionate: AJ and

his colleagues Martin, Steve, Sam and Alex, produced some stunning rearrangements, particularly of standards like It’s Too Late by Carole King, What Kind of Fool Am I, the Anthony Newley hit made unforgettable by Sammy Davis Junior, and Sinatra’s Here I Go Again. With the younger members of the audience thoroughly enjoying themselves, the band covered some of AJ’s own compositions, Living a Lie from his new EP, Don’t Blame Me, and a great encore from the new AJ Brown album Now and Again ( the title track) . The whole AJ Brown thing is moving towards maturity - all five members look increasingly confident in their own skins, each one carving an individual career in music as well as coming together in this scintillating quintet. The music soothes, stimulates and relaxes, and AJ holds it all together with his first class rapport with his audience. Catch him while you can, before the ticket prices go into the stratosphere. www.aj-brown.co.uk ( Mark Ashley)

Super C Big Band - Sunday 13th July Robin Park Sports Centre

A SCINTILLATING tribute to ace trumpeter Derek Watkins, the Super C Big Band rounded off this year’s Jazz Festival in style.

8

Led from the front by Simon Gardner, himself a mean man on the trumpet, the band was formed three years ago to carry on the legacy of Britain’s preeminent high note brass man Watkins, a job they do with aplomb. The line-up on Sunday had a few late replacements in the stocks, but tar didn’t stop them providing a fabulous two-set gig with some phenomenal performance on trumpet, trombone and sax, especially Andy Greenwood’s flugelhorn and trumpet on a beautifully rendered performance of Evergreen.

The band’s virtuosity made the number flow: Memories of You - more great trumpet from Mike Lovett and Craig Wilding, Nature Boy with the band leader giving it all on the trumpet, some of Dave Watkins’ film and TV work, including the James Bond theme ‘From Russia With Love’ ( played Count Basie style) and the theme to that eclectic 80s series The Professionals. More scorching soul on Little Girl Blue and Miles Davis’ Milestones. The second half built momentum: Jimmy Duk’s arrangement of Skylark melodious, Parisienne Thoroughfare a tour-de-force of solo improvisation across the band, Intimacy in Blues, a Sinatraland number The Song Is You, Maynard Ferguson’s Give It One at a furious pace, and finishing with Derek’s theme tune, ‘We’ve Only Just Begun’Fantastic Jazz, Great Festival……(Mark Ashley)

WOOD Fold Primary on School Lane, Standish held their Sports Day on July 16th.

The rain held off whilst all of the children enjoyed a day of fun and competition along with a picnic lunch with parents and grandparents.

The theme of the sports day was the Commonwealth Games and each class came onto the field with a flag from the Commomwealth to represent. The sports day events included the 100 metres, egg and spoon race, shotput and 300 metres. The games were opened by two pupils George Wright, year 6 and Bojana Wright, year 4 who played the trumpet whilst everyone sang along to the national anthem. The winners were presented with awards in the school assembly on Thursday 17th July. Our pictures show the children enoying one of the games and the national anthem being played.

Street Sleep raises £13,638.28

AFTER a successful Street Sleep organised by ‘The Brick’ in Wigan Councillor George Davies presents a £100.00 sponsorship to Amy Clark, Assistant Manager from The Brick. Amy said: “First of all a big thank you to everyone involved in the Wigan Street Sleep, we managed to raise £13,638.28! Since the Street Sleep all staff and volunteers have continued to work hard, we have held and promoted a Food For Thought Day which was on the 26th June. This event managed to raise a lot of awareness of the importance of having food to eat and encouraged many schools and churches to donate to their local food bank. We are also currently working with the Illegal Money Lending team to host an Illegal Money Lending week where we hope to publicize the dangers of getting involved with loan sharks and to make people aware of how they can prevent it from happening. The Brick is busy as always and we would like to thank everyone for their continued support.” Our picture shows Councillor Davies with Amy outside The Brick presenting the cheque.

Centenary celebrations diary

ON Monday August 4th will be the 100th anniversary of Britain declaring World War One. To commemorate the this anniversary St Wilfrids Church will be open all day for people to visit, remember and light a candle.

At the war memorial between 10.15 p.m. and 10.30 p.m. there will be a act of remembrance followed by a procession to St. Wilfrids Church for a short act of remembrance where people at 11 p.m.. will all blow their candles out. Candles for this event have been supplied by Wigan Metro WW1 committee. Sunday 10th August there will be an act of remembrance in St Wilfrids Church at 4 p.m. when all the standards and dignatories will be in attendance. Following the service there will be light refreshments in the Standish Unity Club. On Saturday 30th August the Standish Royal British Legion will be holding a World War One concert in the Unity Club. Tickets for this including premium buffet will be £5.00. A very good artist for the night has been booked, the veteran sweetheart Sarah Dennis. A wonderful night is

guaranteed. Sunday 31st August there will be a World War One commemoration proms concert in Wigan Park starting at 2.00 p.m. till 4.30 pm. Numerous artists and bands including the Wigan Youth Orchestra will be appearing. Admission is free. The time of this proms was so that families including children would be able to go and enjoy the afternoon and picnic and enjoy a wonderful day.

Boxes to Afganistan Boxes to Afganistan have now finished as far as Standish Royal British Legion is concerned. A letter from Afganistan stating the welfare department where a lot of the boxes went to is finishing on August 1st and asked that no more boxes be sent as there will be no-one to deal with them. The branch have sent 11,000 boxes both to Iraq and Afganistan. We would like to take the opportunity to thank everyone that has helped to collect the contents of the boxes and anyone who has helped in anyway at all. I would personally like to thank all my members who over the years have religiously packed, wrapped and sent the boxes over . A special thank you to the staff at Standish Post Office for all their help in sending the boxes over the years.

WWL stories with David Williams

AS PART of Wigan’s First World War Centenary commemorations, the Royal British Legion’s David Williams has held a number of sessions with children at Wood Fold primary school in Standish to introduce the children to the story of the first Great War fought in Europe a century ago.

Children are pictured with David and various artifacts from the conflict at school, also displaying a new banner that will feature in events over the next few weeks as the August anniversary of the declaration of war approaches.

11

Pupils entered their poems which was then judged by the school to eventually pick an overall winner and three runners up. Eco brand is spreading with the Audi A4 Avant Ultra

AUDI’S new eco brand is spreading through the model range and the Audi A4 is the next car to be given the Ultra makeover. With Ultra, the company aims to prove that striving for lower running costs doesn’t have to mean compromises elsewhere. Nowhere is that idea truer than the A4 Ultra Avant model.

The Ultra version of the A4 Avant gets a 2.0litre TDI with 161bhp and 400Nm. It’s a strong engine that works well with the Avant estate model. There’s plenty of power low down, as

400026

TEL: 01257 400026 to advertise in the motors section

you’d expect, but enough at the top end to ensure it doesn’t feel like it’s running out of puff. The car deals with the 0-62mph run in just 8.3 seconds – underlining it’s performance credentials.

This latest raft of engines has also gone to prove that just because you are driving a diesel engine you don’t have to put up with the rumbles of noise that often come with the package. Refinement is excellent at a cruise but it does get a little noisier when you put your foot down – it’s no worse than a BMW 320d Touring, though, or even the 2.1-litre diesel in the new Mercedes C220 BluTEC Estate. The A4 Avant comes with a six-speed manual, which is smooth, precise and satisfying to use. The

steering is as before, so while it weights up well in corners and is reassuring, there’s rarely a moment of pure excitement. The Ultra badge is reserved for those cars that are lighter on the wallet. With CO2 emissions as low as 114g/km – meaning a yearly tax cost of £30 – and a claimed fuel economy figure of 64mpg, the A4 Avant Ultra is worthy of its title. Elsewhere, things are very much as they were with the A4 Avant. Bootspace is a spacious 480 litres with the rear seats up and 1,430-litre with them down. There’s no making do with smaller wheels with low rolling resistance tyres either, as our car came on the standard 17-inch wheels. There are no restrictions on the option list for Ultra buyers, with our car getting Audi’s Drive Select system and Sport suspension. This all ensures that the Audi doesn’t feel too hard over any road surface imperfections, though Sport mode does mean things get stiffer and occasionally uncomfortable, though the car is a more engaging proposition for it. As a package, it’s hard to criticise the A4 Avant. The small niggles of the standard car are still present in that it’s still not the most dynamic option available. However, the figures are on a par with the BMW 320d, and it’s still an accomplished all rounder. This latest engine has just given it that extra dimension it needed to compete even more forcefully.

Verdict

The A4 Ultra strikes the perfect balance between efficiency and performance. It may be a so-called ʻecoʼ model, but on this occasion you wonʼt have to sacrifice options or comfort for the privilege. As with other Ultra models across the Audi ranges, itʼs hard to argue against this new engine choice being the pick of the A4

Using air-con blunts mpg by over 6% in hybrid cars

RESEARCH shows fuel economy in hybrid cars is hit harder by air conditioning use than that of petrol and diesel models

A i r- c o n d i t i o n i n g systems have a bigger impact on fuel economy in hybrids than in petrol and diesel models, according to research by Emissions Analytics.

Testing at the data service’s Los Angeles facility revealed driving a hybrid with the air-con on full reduces mpg by an average of 6.1 per cent,

compared to just 3.8 per cent for petrol vehicles and 4.6 per cent for diesels. • Best hybrid cars to buy now Economy tumbles even further in hybrids if driving around town, where the effect can rise to nearly 10 per cent. On motorways it fell to 2.8 per cent. On both types of road, air-con had the least impact on petrol-engined cars’ mpg, with diesels falling in between. Although the tests were conducted in the hot US climate, where drivers rely heavily on their aircon, Emissions Analytics said the figures still had relevance for UK buyers. • UK speed limit for

lorries increased from 2015 Founder and CEO Nick Molden explained why hybrids suffer more. “This is, in a way, a variant on ‘MPG illusion’,” he said. “The

perceived effect on hybrids is worse but the reality is the fuel used is the same as for petrol or diesel vehicles on the same journey. “When buying a car, it’s important not to be

seduced by hybrids’ high headline mpg figures, when under real-world use – including with the air-con on – the mpg can come back down quickly.”

Master Builder Of The Year Winner - NorthWest Region

WIGAN BEGIN their one hundred and first season with a completely new fixture list following the RFU's decision to revise the league system in the North West.

A family run business, established in 1996, offering you an individual approach to your project, domestic or commercial. Personal service, providing a unique level of building design and construction quality throughout the Northwest.

This was done to accommodate the two surplus teams who as a result of relegation became eligible for the South Lancashire Cheshire 1 League and to make up for a shortfall of two teams in the North Lancashire Cumbria League. Following consultations and consideration of the travel involved for all teams, Wigan were one of two teams that moved sideways into the North Lancashire Cumbria League which is the equivalent level as the league they had been playing in – South Lancashire/Cheshire1. It is with great excitement and anticipation that Wigan await the start of this season with no points of reference to guide them in the upcoming contests against teams many from Cumbria who they know little about. Over past seasons they have met four of their new opponents in Lancashire Trophy encounters and have triumphed over Heaton Moor, Fleetwood and Blackburn and lost narrowly to Leigh who were then a league above, these cup encounters apart it was in the non league era when they last faced Furness and Aspatria, the rest they have never played. Wigan kick off the season away at Blackburn and their first home fixture is against Whitehaven on September 13th. Peter Rigby continues as skipper for the new season, but with a new coaching set up:- Experienced player Martin Gambles takes over as head coach having gained his RFU level 2 coaching ticket. He is ably supported by Ian Jeffrey (Backs), Nick Gregson (Forwards) and Claire Taylor (Conditioning) with Richard Buckley who is 2nd team manager. Wigan's successful U 19 Senior Colts who last season won the league title and the Lancashire Shield competition, are this season entering The Raging Bull Colts League featuring just 12 teams from the North West and anyone under 19 on the 31st August is welcome to join them training any Tuesday or Thursday at Douglas Valley from 7.00 pm.

Courier SPORT Oliver Sam takes a look at new the additions to the squad

WITH THIS summer’s World Cup offering so much drama and excitement, the new domestic football season certainly has a hard act to follow. However, Latics boss Uwe Rosler has been busy in the transfer market in recent weeks, assembling a squad capable of winning promotion back to the Premier League. Along with previous signings Andrew Taylor and Aaron Taylor-Sinclair, and the now-permanent deal extending Martyn Waghorn’s stay at the DW Stadium, there have been a few more fresh faces in the dressing room recently. Defender and new setpiece taker James Travernier has joined from Newcastle for an undisclosed fee. He’s been very impressive in preseason so far, even scoring a wondergoal in the 2-1 defeat against Rochdale a couple of weeks back. It looks like Rosler is looking to use him as a wing-back, similar to Roberto Martinez’s old system, so Travernier could be a real threat for us going forward this season. Spanish striker Oriol Riera has moved over from La Liga side Osasuna for (yet another)

undisclosed fee. He scored two goals in the league game against Real Madrid last season, so any striker that can get past Sergio Ramos and Pepe is definitely a coup for a Championship side like us! We were also desperately short of firepower upfront following the departure of Nick Powell back to Manchester United, so hopefully Riera will be able to fill that gap and consistently find the net for us. Experienced midfielder Don Cowie has joined on a free transfer from relegated Cardiff City. The 31-year-old Scot has also played for Watford and knows all about getting promoted from the Championship. He’ll also help to provide cover following the sad departure of Jordi Gomez to Sunderland. Last but not least (at least for the moment anyway!), highly-rated Manchester City midfielder Emyr Huws has

joined on a six-month loan deal. The Welshman impressed in midfield whilst on loan at Birmingham City last season, starting in 17 matches and scoring two goals. He’s a talented young player who’s already involved in his national team, having made his debut against Iceland in March. He’ll hopefully fill the void in the centre of midfield whilst Ben Watson and Chris McCann return from long-term injuries. With Rosler still on the prowl in the transfer market, I don’t think Dave Whelan will have put away his chequebook just yet. The Latics continue on their pre-season tour of Germany, with games against Wiedenbruck and Paderborn still yet to play. Our friendly results so far have been pretty mixed; despite wins over Champions League side Besiktas and TSV Havelse, there was a 0-0 draw against Walsall and a 2-1 loss against Rochdale. Let’s just hope our league form this season is more consistent! The new campaign kicks off with a home game against Reading, managed by former Latics goalkeeper Nigel Adkins. A positive start might just set us on course for another memorable season.

Next season....not as diff as you think!! Paul Finch is

The Insider

Wigan Warriors from the Inside Out...

OKAY … ADMIT it. You’ve been dreading any discussion about next season, because you’ve glimpsed the new format British RL will adopt in 2015, and have been so bamboozled by the mere look of it that you’ve shrunk backwards in horror. Whenever the subject come up in has conversation, you’ve nodded sagely and agreed with everyone, regardless of whether they are disagreeing with each other. Embarrassed by this, you’ve perhaps tried to look at it again, and still haven’t been able to make head nor tail of it – either that or you simply haven’t had a spare forty minutes to work it all out with a pencil. Well, don’t worry. You aren’t alone. I’ve been in the same boat. The new league structure will come into force next year – this year’s doublerelegation of Bradford and London was only in preparation for it – and on paper it looks very complicated. However, having checked through it again, I don’t think it’s quite so confusing. So here we go, let’s try and work out what awaits us next year. To start with, in 2015 the First Utility Super League and Kingstone Press Championship will

both feature 12 clubs, whilst the Kingstone Press Championship One will be renamed as Kingstone Press League 1 and comprise 14 clubs. Super League and Championship clubs will each play 23 matches in the regular season – home and away against the other clubs in their respective competitions, plus the Magic Weekend or Summer Bash. At the end of the regular season, Super League and the Championship will split into the Super 8s, three groups of eight clubs based on league positions called Super League, The Qualifiers and Championship Shield. Super League features the top eight Super League clubs; The Qualifiers comprises Super League clubs nine to 12 plus the top four Championship clubs; and the Championship Shield features Championship clubs five to 12. The Super 8s will be played on a seven match mini-league basis, and will largely determine the make-up of Super League and the Championship the following season. In Super League, all eight clubs are guaranteed top flight status for the following year, whilst the top four at the end of the minileague will contest a

play-off series: first v fourth and second v third, with the winner going through to the title-deciding Grand Final. In The Qualifiers, the top three clubs after seven matches will play in Super League the following season with the final place determined by the Million Pound Game, a play-off between the clubs finishing fourth and fifth. The loser of that match will join the three remaining clubs from The Qualifiers and six Championship Shield clubs in the Championship the following season. In the Championship Shield, the top four clubs with contest a play-off series, with the winners contesting the Championship Shield final. The bottom two teams in the Championship Shield will be relegated to League 1. The 14 League 1 clubs will each play 22 games – 11 home and 11 away, playing each other once and nine teams twice with fixtures scheduled on a geographical basis. At the end of the regular season first will place second with the winner promoted to the Championship as champions. The loser of that match will join the teams that finished third, fourth and fifth in a play-off to determine the second promotion spot. The 14 League 1 clubs will also be joined by the 2014 National Conference League Grand Final winners and the 2014 RFL Conference Challenge Cup winners in a new knockout competition played at the start of the season. To allow for the changes to the league structure, the top eight Super League clubs will join the Challenge Cup at the sixth round stage, with League 1 clubs entering at Round 3, Championship clubs at Round 4 and the bottom four Super League clubs at Round 5. Now this comes straight from the Super League’s news release, so I can’t be held responsible if anyone is still scratching their head. However, now that I’ve looked at it on paper, I don’t think it’s quite as complex as I first thought. What do I think of it in principle? Well, the advantages are clear. At

present, half the league season is irrelevant. In all my years watching Rugby League, I never thought an era would arrive when clubs would take their foot of the gas for half a year to reserve energy for the play-offs (though of course, a top five, rather than the ridiculous top eight, might also have accounted for that). And for those teams at the foot of Super League, with no relegation threatening, there was nothing to play for at all. That won’t be the case anymore. Everyone will have to be in tip-top form from beginning to end. And a 12-team Super League is a vastly better idea than the 14-team tournament we still have now. If I had my way, it would be cut down to ten, to try and concentrate the talent in the part of the game where it most needs to be, but my opinion is by the by. However, the franchise system, which I liked, is going to be a big casualty of this. With adequate breathing space to develop their business programmes as well as their playing and coaching personnel, the likes of Huddersfield, Widnes, Catalan and now, it seems, Castleford, have at last been able to emerge as forces to be reckoned with. Will that continue to happen? Who knows. Also, I’m not mad keen on a system that has the potential to see the same teams playing each other again and again, while not atypically of the RFL, I think it’s another of these formats which, while reasonably straightforward in practise, appears quite convoluted on paper. Not the easiest thing to explain to newbies to the game. But these are probably not priorities. The thing top level Rugby League always used to boast, which neither soccer nor Rugby Union could guarantee, was a constant highintensity contest. That has been absent for the last few seasons, and we’ve suffered as a result. Tickets sales are down, and with our best players leaving, it’s been easy to imagine the game was wilting as a professional sport in the UK. Regular big battles in some of our best stadia will go a long way towards rectifying that. So bring it on.

Courier SPORT Jack golf day at Winstanley students take Joining Dean Wood Golf Club competition in their stride THREE A-LEVEL students from Winstanley College competed in the British Colleges Sport (BCS) Equestrian event at Burton Bishop College in North Yorkshire recently and secured themselves a top three spot.

The competition, which included show jumping and dressage events, saw 16 year old Chloe Challinor, from Hindley in Wigan, 17 year old Louise Prescott, from Platt Bridge in Wigan and 17 year old Chloe Workman, from Horwich in Bolton, take third place overall.

The girls took part in the BCS event as part of Winstanley College’s sports enrichment programme where students are encouraged to take part in

extra-curricular sporting events, irrespective of the Alevel subjects they’re studying. Shelley Evans, Sport Enrichment Officer at the College, commented: “Our role is to embed a sports culture into the College and encourage everyone to take part in sports. “We inform the students of all national and regional events taking place and help them organise the logistics in order for them to compete.” Chloe Challinor said: “We really enjoyed the day and it was a good experience getting to ride Bishop Burton’s own horses and compete in both the dressage and show jumping events.” Our pictures show Equestrian winners Chloe Workman, Louise Prescott and Chloe Challinor with their rosettes and Ian McCombes, British Colleges Sport Regional Co-ordinator for Yorkshire and Humber and Chloe Challinor competing at the BCS Equestrian event.

The day started off with a fantastic performance from the World Champion Trick Shot Specialist Geoff Swain, hitting putters over 150 yards and golf ball's out of balloons he certainly left some of the afternoons golf to be desired.

With some comedy along the way and some audience 'participation' (if that's what it can be called) it was the perfect start to a fantastic day in aid of a great cause! With the shot gun going off at 1.30pm on the dot the golf got underway with a shot gun start. There were various prizes to be won out on the course with the most exciting one being on the challenging 182 yard par 3, for a hole in one on this hole not only would the golfer have a very large bar bill but they would also be the proud owner of a fantastic BMW 1 series. Sorry to say

that the car wasn't won on the day but a mention has to be made to Paul Kennedy, who hit the pin and left the ball within inches of the cup being by far the closest on the day. The other prizes out on the course were the longest, straightest drive on the opening 1st hole and nearest the pin on the short, tricky 10th hole which were won by Mark Pastor and Ged Turner respectively who each won 1 Dozen Titleist Pro V1 golf balls plus £150 voucher for Clarke's Golf Shops kindly donated by Bytes Document Solutions. The overall winning team on the day with a fantastic score of 99 points were Dave Jenkins, Paul Lytham, Gareth Dyson and Gareth’s Dad, who won a fantastic Overnight stay at Celtic Manor, playing the 2010 and Montgomery Courses. With other prizes throughout the day the event was enjoyed by all but the overall winner on the day for sure were Joining Jack, rasing in excess of £11,000 the Woodward Solicitors 2nd Annual Golf Day was a fantastic sucsses. A massive thanks must go out to all the sponsors, Dean Wood Golf Club and all the competitors that made the day possiable and so enjoyable and we look forward to next years event.
