THREE DEANERY High School pupils have pitched their recycling ideas to Councillor George Davies to encourage Wiganers to get recycling.

Year 11 pupils, Hannah Parker, Rachel Leftbridge, and Abena Otchera explained to Wigan Central Councillor George Davies that it was important for schools to take on recycling schemes so that future generations can benefit.

The school has formed an eco-group, an eco-garden, a worm cafe in the schools grounds, and a newsletter to inform pupils how to get recycling.

Councillor Davies, who sits on the environmental panel for the Confident Places Scrutiny Committee, praised the three pupils for their contributions to put recycling skills at the forefront of their educational needs.

He said: “It is important that the next generation get involved with projects such as environmental and recycling schemes.

“I would like to thank the Deanery High School, especially Hannah, Rachel and Abena for their work that they are carrying out as part of the project.”

Help catch the culprits

WIGAN residents are being asked to help catch the culprits who don’t clean up after their dog.

The Brick centre gets Rotary support

NOT ONLY has The Brick centre, Wigan’s voluntary centre that helps homeless people, moved to new premises just off Library Street, but it has been able to extend its services thanks in part to a donation from Wigan Rotary Club, which has helped to expand the foodbank service.

Trish Green Manager of the centre explained: “With the end of crisis loans from the 1st April we expected to see an increase in

demand in trying to help people with issues including debt and financial management.

“We saw it was vital that as part of our help we were able to continue to provide food parcels.

We are delighted therefore to receive this donation from Wigan Rotary Club, which has helped to provide extra food in order to cope with the demand.’

Rotary President Venk Mani said ‘ We are delighted to be able to help The Brick extend the services they provide to the people in need in our town.

“It was obvious to us that the changes in the benefit system

were going to present real problems for some residents.

Hopefully this donation will help in a small way.’

Venk continued: “ The Brick is now based in Rowbottom Square, Arcade Street off Library Street, and I know would always welcome donations of tins of food and money to help with the ever increasing demand for their services.’

Based on Arcade Street in Wigan town centre, The Brick collects food which is then made up into parcels designed to last for three days.

Trish Green from The Brick says: “It is very much a crisis service for people who have fallen on hard times for whatever reason. People are referred to the Food Bank from organisations like local housing associations, the job centre, Wigan Life Centre and the Citizens' Advice Bureau. We take their details and make up parcels to suit their specific needs.”

Traditionally seen as a support service for the homeless, Trish says the range of people using the food bank has changed drastically in recent months.

“We have been operating since 2008 but recently we have seen more families, more young people and people who have lost their jobs using the service,” she says. “It also affects every part of the borough and we distribute food parcels throughout different communities, not simply the more deprived areas. “In the last few weeks alone The Brick has distributed more than 200 parcels to people in need and Trish fears the demand for the service is only going to increase in the short-term.

“We are really pleased that the Library Service has come on board and agreed to do this,” she says.

“Sadly, due to the demand, we need

all the help we can get.”

The library scheme is simple “People using the libraries can donate tinned or packet food by placing it in the specially designated box. The Brick's Food Bank cannot take fresh food, so donations need to be tinned, dried or in packets.

Because the service is dealing with a lot more families they would also welcome donations of essential items such as nappies and toiletries.

Wigan Council's Cabinet Member for Leisure, Cllr Chris Ready, paid tribute to those behind the project and appealed to members of the public to help.

“This is one of those projects that we really do wish wasn't needed but sadly it is,” said Cllr Ready. “The council and its partners are doing all they can to help homeless people and people in need in our borough but of course we cannot act in isolation.

“Society's problems are everyone's responsibility and this scheme is a great way for people to get involved and make a difference to someone else's life. We are relying on the kindness of members of the public and library-users but we're sure the response will be great. It's only by working together that we can hopefully look forward to the time when food banks are a thing of the past, in the meantime I'd like to thank everyone in advance for helping out.”

Libraries join Brick scheme

LIBRARIES across Wigan Borough have joined a major drive to help prevent people in need from going hungry.

Working with homelessness charity The Brick, WLCT's (Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust's) Library Service has agreed for the borough's libraries to be used as collection points for food donations. The food will be donated to The Brick's Food Bank and be distributed to families and individuals in desperate need of support.

Kim Collins, Customer Service Manager for WLCT who manage the Library Service on behalf of the Council, explains: “The Brick has been doing some outreach work with homeless people from the libraries for some time now.

“We believe that libraries are at the heart of the community and so we decided to contact the charity to see if there was anything else we could do to support them. They suggested the Food Bank collections which we thought was a good idea.”

Libraries in Atherton, Leigh and Tyldesley are already taking part in a similar food collection service but those collecting for The Brick Food Bank will be Ashton, Golborne, Hindley, Lamberhead Green, Marsh

In a crackdown against dog fouling, Wigan Council’s safer environment team are appealing for witnesses to come forward with enough information to catch those guilty of not picking up after their dog.

Councillor Kevin Anderson, cabinet member for environment and communities at Wigan Council, said: “ While we get a lot of calls from residents reporting the crime, the information they provide is usually not sufficient to identify the perpetrators.

“In an effort to eliminate the mess from our streets and green spaces, we’re asking our residents to help.

Terry Dunn, director for environment at Wigan Council, added: “We’re asking responsible dog owners, who pick up after their dog, and residents of the borough, to help us to identify those who don’t. By making a note of the time, route, dog and owner description, our officers will be able to catch them in the act.”

If you know of a serial offender, report them by contacting Wigan Council's helpline on 01942 404364 providing the date and time of the incident, the exact location, the person’s name/description (if known), and description of the dog.

If an owner is caught not cleaning up after their dog, they will be issued with a fixed penalty fine of £50. If a fixed penalty is issued and not paid, prosecution for the offence provides a fine of up to £1000 upon conviction.

THE AUNT of a young Wigan woman who died from cancer has pledged her support to this year’s Hopice Star Trekkers event.

Mrs Eileen Massey says, “I am joining the Wigan & Leigh Hospice STAR T R E K K E R S sponsored walk this year for the first time.

“My niece Louise Prescott was diagnosed with cancer in 2003 and became a Wigan & Leigh Hospice patient 4 years

ago but passed away in February this year.

She was always a positive lady with a bright smile who was an inspiration to everyone who knew her.

Louise was always happy to go to the Hospice because it was such a wonderful place with amazing staff. Not only did she spend a few occasions as an in-patient, but she was a frequent visitor for different kinds of therapy treatment.

Louise always said how a visit to the Hospice made her feel so much better.

As a visitor I was amazed at the pleasant, restful and peaceful atmosphere of the building and the professional, caring treatment by the staff.

They were always helpful and willing to assist in any way they could; not only to Louise, but also to her quite large family, whenever we visited.

Louise especially loved the therapy rooms with their subdued lighting, candles and gentle music.

It was therapy just to enter!

As soon as you do so, a calming, relaxing ambience surrounds you.

All the family cannot speak highly enough of the The terrific Hospice. support Louise and we, her family, received, was nothing short of outstanding. They were endlessly helpful, patient and supportive.

So much so, that we are planning a number of fundraising events and

Touchdown for Try Reading!

ON the rugby pitch they’re real and winners they’ve won every trophy the game has to offer, but now Wigan Warriors are about to take on a challenge of a different kind as they limber up and prepare to get down to some serious...reading.

To celebrate the launch of Wigan Borough’s very own Try Reading project, the Warriors will be swapping passes for page-turners as they embark on their very own Six Book Challenge.

The Warriors are the first full team to ever take up the challenge.

Try Reading is an exciting initiative that aims to promote and celebrate this year’s Rugby League World Cup. More than 30 public library services across the North of England have joined forces to put on a host of reading and rugby-themed event in the run-up to this October’s big kick-off.

WLCT (Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust) is leading the Try Reading charge in Wigan Borough through its network of libraries.

On Wednesday May 8 Wigan Warriors took time out from their regular training session at Edge Hall Road, Orrell, to sign up to the scheme and become the first Rugby League team to take on the Six Book Challenge.

The event will be held along the Leeds Liverpool Canal at the Wigan Investment Centre, to generate funds for the hospice, where Corey receives support and guidance. Corey, who lives in Standish, has named the fundraiser ‘Daddy’s Duck Race’.

The charity event, which will take place on Sunday 30th June, will also aim to raise awareness of Bowel Cancer, the illness that claimed the life of Corey’s dad, Ric Coggins, when he was just two years old.

The toddler suggested the fundraising idea to his mum, Carrie Coggins, whilst watching a duck race on one of his favourite TV shows, Mr Tumble. Corey said: “I want to do a duck race like that to remember Daddy."

He also asked if two of his friends, Bobby and Ted Goode could be a part of the race, as they too lost their father three

FOR THE children and staff at St Wilfrid's Church of England Primary School in Standish 2013 is once again a Dance Festival year and everyone in school is beginning to get excited as plans and rehearsals for the festival reach a climax.

The festival, called Fantasia, will be held on June 20th at Robin Park Arena, starting at 630pm, and will feature dance pieces from the whole school.

Outreach and Programme Manager for WLCT Rita Devlin explains: “The Six Book Challenge is a national initiative from The Reading Agency that has been designed the help people get back into reading. All you have to do is choose six books you would like to read and then chart your progress in a diary.”

Wigan Warriors have agreed to take part in the challenge, and the players who will be doing it will post regular updates on how they are doing on the club’s website.

There will be lots of other events taking place as part of Try Reading and we hope that the Warriors’ involvement will turn lots more people on to the joys of reading.

So, will Sam Tomkins be sifting through Sense and Sensibility after the showers? Or will Pat Richards be pondering Pride and Prejudice during the pre-match interviews?

Warriors’ captain Sean O’Loughlin says: “Many people will think that the lads would rather take on the St Helen’s pack single-handedly than open a book but the truth is slightly different.

“Reading is a great way

to relax and unwind. It takes your mind off the pressures of the game and many of the players like nothing more than getting into a good book.

“We’re all looking forward to taking the Six Book Challenge. We hope it lets our young fans know that reading is really important and will give you pleasure for your whole life.”

Funded with an award from the National Lottery supported £6 million Grants for the arts libraries fund through Arts Council England, Try Reading covers a geographical area spanning from the Wirral to Hull. In the run-up to the World Cup there are more than 150 planned events that will help hundreds of people not only get into reading, but writing and drama as well.

Wigan Council’s Cabinet Member for Culture and Leisure, Councillor Chris Ready, says: “We’re really proud and pleased that the Warriors are supporting this initiative.

“Once again Wigan is leading the way in sport and culture because they are the first team to take part. The Rugby League World Cup will be

years ago to a disease calledAlpha-1; which they also hope to raise more awareness of.

Ric, a local PR executive, was diagnosed at 32 and lost his fight just ten months later. The cancer went undetected, despite various tests, and sadly once it had been discovered it had already spread to Ric’s liver. Ric spent his remaining months enjoying family time with Corey and his wife Carrie, whom he married on New Year’s Eve 2010.

Corey is appealing to individuals and businesses to purchase a duck to take part in one of two races throughout the event. The ducks cost just £2 each for the family races, whilst ducks for the corporate race can be purchased by local businesses for only £25.

The races will take place between 12pm and 4pm, there will also be plenty of family fun on offer with fairground style events, charity stalls, a range of refreshments, music and much more. There will be 1st, 2nd and 3rd place prizes for each race which Corey hopes will be donated by local businesses.

Carrie said: “From the day he was diagnosed Ric wanted to raise awareness of the disease in order to prevent others going through what he had to. By fulfilling Corey's fantastic idea of a duck race, we hope to raise as much awareness of bowel

cancer as possible and honour Ric by carrying out one of his last wishes and keeping his memory alive.

Corey also wants to help his friends who lost their father to Alpha-1. Alpha-1, also known as Antitryspin Deficiency, A1AD or AATD is an inherited, genetic condition that is passed on from generation to generation. It is a little known illness in the UK and most people have never heard of it.”

As well as raising awareness for Bowel Cancer and AlphaI, all funds raised from the event will be donated to Wigan and Leigh Hospice.

Carrie said: “It is two years this week since Ric passed away and without the support of Wigan and Leigh Hospice, alongside our family and friends, I’m not sure where we would be.”

Bowel cancer can be successfully treated in over 90% of cases, if diagnosed early. The early symptoms of bowel cancer are very similar to other, much less serious problems with the bowel. Symptoms can include abdominal pain, bleeding from the back passage, change in bowel habits, bloating, cramps, diarrhoea, constipation, loss of appetite and weight loss.

MP and councillor united!

WIGAN Central Councillor George Davies is calling on the residents of Standish to support an online petition set up by Wigan MP Lisa Nandy against more homes being developed in Standish.

Government Inspector Kevin Ward has approved outline plans for more than 1,000 houses to be built in Standish.

The land includes the site of the former Standish Golf Course, land at the back of Standish High School and land on the Bradley Lane estate.

Wigan MP Lisa Nandy is waiting to meet with the inspector to encourage him to reject the core strategy proposals.

Under Government guidelines, more than 2,500 houses must be built in Wigan Borough by 2026.

Wigan MP Lisa Nandy said: “The Government appointed Planning Inspector has rejected the views of Wigan Council, and ordered that 1,000 new homes can be built in Standish.

“This is against the wishes of many local residents, who wish to see new homes built in the Borough, but are deeply dismayed that the plan takes no account of the pressures on roads in Standish or the value of greenbelt land to people

“During the public consultation, I met with and discussed these concerns with senior Council leaders and urged local people to make their views known to the Government appointed Planning Inspector.

I am deeply disappointed he has ignored the wishes of local people and the Council.”

Councillor Davies would like to thank the people of Standish who are objecting to the core strategy proposals and encourage Standish residents to help Lisa’s campaign against the core strategy.

He added:” “The planning inspector has moved the goal posts so that the core strategy decisions have moved from Lowton to Standish, and this will create havoc in the village.

“Already an application has been sent in by Morris Homes for the golf course project to build 250 homes.

“I’m calling on the residents of Standish to support our MP in a bid to stop these unwelcome developments.”

MP calls for My Money Week support

WIGAN MP Lisa Nandy has called on local schools to take part in My Money Week (3 to 9 June), giving pupils the chance to learn more about money and personal finance.

Every primary and secondary school in Wigan is being given the chance to take part for free in My Money Week, which has returned for its fifth year thanks to a new partnership between national charity pfeg (Personal Finance Education Group) and Barclays.

My Money Week will improve young people’s financial skills, knowledge and confidence through special lessons, activities and debates in schools and other settings across the UK. Teachers in Wigan can order a free Activity Pack, developed by pfeg, full of creative and engaging financial resources and ideas for how to deliver financial education to young people, from the age of four up to 19.

Young people in Wigan can also take part in the ‘A-Z of Money’, a national competition challenging them to learn more about money through creative writing.

Lisa said: “I am delighted to lend my support to My Money Week, money and personal finance are a vital ingredient to our lives and understanding from an early age gives young people a better chance of staying out of the hands of pay day or doorstep lenders in the future. Sound money management skills will give young people a great start to their early life.”

National NHS post for Wigan Consultant

A LEADING Orthopaedic Consultant based at Wrightington Hospital, has been appointed by NHS England as the National Clinical Director for musculoskeletal conditions.

Professor Peter Kay, pictured, has been appointed as a National Clinical Director which will see him work closely with people with musculoskeletal conditions, health professionals and musculoskeletal charities to support improvements in health outcomes.

He will share his time between Wrightington Hospital and his new national role at NHS England.

Professor Kay said: “I’m honoured to be the first National Clinical Director for musculoskeletal conditions appointed by NHS England. "Whilst I am excited to have taken on this appointment, which builds on my past experience, I do not underestimate the responsibility I have taken on particularly to patients as well as the wider musculoskeletal community.

"I’m also very grateful and reassured to have received numerous letters of support for this new appointment.

"I can categorical state that I will do all I can in this role to achieve better clinical outcomes that improve the quality of life for patients who suffer from musculoskeletal conditions.”

Joe, our host for the evening, uses a whistle to start and end games and also halt a game to produce a yellow or red card when he catches someone cheating [usually they have just made a mistake] but it is so funny.

One of our members was building a beetle in the wrong game box and received a warning. She couldn’t

stop laughing and it was a while before she could continue. She had scored nothing in the previous game and so the box was empty, thus confusing her.

Another lady on the same table missed out a couple of body parts, declared ‘BEETLE’ only to get the yellow card for a false call.

The winner of the event was the one with the most points at the end of 12 games. We had an interval for drinks and biscuits at half time. The prize was a chocolate hamper with a bottle of perry, kindly donated by Sainsbury’s. We also had a raffle of approx 8 prizes and Joe gave us a Nursery Rhyme quiz at half time, which was really good, and all the children were given chocolate creme eggs, whatever their score.

Joe will be hosting his own Beetle Drive at his church on 24th June at St Andrew’s Mission, Garswood from 6 pm. £3.00 per person, including light refreshments.

Centenary of Mothers’ Union

ST LUKES Church, Orrell will be celebrating the 100th Anniversary of thechurch’s branch of the Mothers’ Union with a service on Tuesday 11th June 2013 at 7.30 p.m.

AT OUR May 8th meeting we had a speaker who gave us a real surprise.

Joanne Halliwell who is an actress and comedienne with her own personal style. She gave us an truly entertaining performance acting out the role of Betsy the Scullery Maid. We all laughed from start to finish. A meeting we will all not forget.

Our walking and book groups are as busy as ever. Together with many trips out organised.

Our next meeting is on June 12th at Appley Bridge Village Hall, Appley Lane North at 7.30 p.m. The speaker will be Geoff Moss on Garden Management.

Wigan Archaeological Society meeting

THE next meeting of the Wigan Archaeological Society will be on Wednesday 5th June at the Standish Suite of the Brocket Arms in Wigan.

Our speaker is Ron Cowell from Liverpool Museum who will be telling us about his recent excavations on Merseyside.

Earlier this year Ron's team discovered 8000-yearold houses on Lunt Meadows, just outside Liverpool.

This area would once have been a sandy promontory surrounded by reed beds which would have been an ideal area for a Mesolithic hunter-gatherer community.

However this is very rare evidence of a community from this period living in a permanent or semipermanent environment.

Ron's team has also recovered stone tools and worked flint from inside the structure. The project was commissioned by the Environment Agency who want to transform farmland into a wetland reserve.

He gave lots of helpful hints and suggestions accompanied by slides; he was prepared to listen to and answer questions about members problems and the difficulties encountered, to all he gave straight forward answers. He had written several books with hints and ideas which were available if members wished to buy.

On 2nd May we had a lovely lunch at the Wheel Restaurant, the food was excellent and served pleasantly and efficiently by the students.

On 9th May an interesting and informative talk was given by Marie Hurst on Aromatherapy which the members found to be most helpful.

On May 16th Dorothy Mapley spoke on " I'd like to do that".

She did not tell us what it was going to be about but said it would be revealed in her talk. I can't tell you because it might spoil it for you if ever you get the chance to hear her - but it was informative and amusing with lots of reminiscing.

During our leisure time I will be showing pictures of a visit to Bodnant Gardens with all the variety of trees and shrubs and beautiful colours. After the beautiful few days over the Bank Holiday, the weather changed and it was rather damp and chill, but despite this it was truly beautiful. There will also be a quiz about gardens - not too difficult even for those who may not know too much about plants and gardens!

We look forward to more interesting talks before we finish for a Summer Break during July, restarting on 15th August with a talk by Mrs Gwyneth Millard entitled "Aunt Eliza".Are you fifty or over and free on a Thursday afternoon? why not come and join us on a Thursday starting at 1.45pm until 3.30pm, you would be made most welcome. Sue is, of course, famous for her roles in Brookside, The Royle Family, Lapland, Being Eileen, and many other productions. Currently, of course, she is appearing as Gloria, the mother of land-lady Stella, in Coronation Street.

Sue has a work colleague, Janice Troup. Sue is also a friend of Janice’s family, who come from Shevington. Janice’s father – Mr. Tim Hooley, passed away recently.

As a tribute, and in memory of him, Sue Johnston has kindly offered to come to Shevington and support our community event.

Planning of Fete 2013 is still “work in progress.” However, the committee is confident that the presence of such a well-known personality as Sue Johnston will raise the profile – and the attendance figures – of the Fete.

The College provided an update of its contribution to local needs and major property developments which are planned for the College over the coming 12 months.

Senior staff members and Governors were joined by a wide range of community members including Headteachers from high schools across the Borough, local employers, Voluntary group members, Wigan Council, Student Ambassadors and Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh Acute Health Trust, “The Big Debate” was a major focus of the event where guests were asked to contribute their opinions and respond to a number of

experience that they need.

THE WIDOW of m u r d e r e d submarine officer Ian Molyneux Standish from has spoken of her “pride” after she was awarded a special military cross at a ceremony in Wigan Town Hall.

L i e u t e n a n t Commander Ian Molyneux was shot dead on board HMS Astute in April 2011, was presented with the Elizabeth Cross, which is given to the next-ofkin of members of the British Forces killed on duty.

Lt Cdr Molyneux, a father-of-four, was murdered on the submarine while it docked in Gillian Molyneux, was whose late husband Southampton by a

drunken crew member.

His widow was presented the cross by the Lord Lieutenant of Greater Manchester at a ceremony hosted by the Mayor of Wigan Borough Cllr Myra Whiteside.

The couple’s four children were also at the ceremony as was the Northern England Naval Regional

C o m m a n d e r Commodore Dickie Baum.

Gillian Molyneux said: “I am honoured to receive the Elizabeth Cross. It is a medal no next-ofkin ever wishes to receive but it goes some way to recognising what we as a family – and most importantly our children – have sacrificed and lost through Ian’s dedication to the Royal Navy, Queen and country. I accept it with deep sorrow and immense pride.

“I lost my soul-mate when Ian died and our children lost a wonderful daddy. I will always take great pride in my husband, his heroic actions on the day of his death and the submarine

service and all it stands for.”

Cllr Myra Whiteside added: “Lt Cdr Molyneux’s tragic death deeply shocked and saddened the people of Wigan Borough. He was clearly an outstanding naval

officer and a loving and committed husband and father.

“His widow and children have shown remarkable dignity in the face of their terrible loss. It was an

absolute privilege for me to welcome them to the Town Hall and host this ceremony on behalf of the borough. I can think of no one who deserves such recognition more.”

Get on your bike for the Hospice

Armstrong said, “Why not sign up to ride for the Hospice, knowing that not only will it be a great incentive to ‘get on the road’, but by raising sponsorship for us, you will be helping people who are on a much more difficult journey. We are hoping that the Olympic legacy will encourage even more riders to support us this year.”

FOLLOWING the highly successful London Olympics and Paralympics, there has been a surge in the interest in cycling. Wigan & Leigh Hospice are hoping that will reflect in the numbers of riders joining their ‘team’ in the Manchester to Blackpool Bike Ride this year on Sunday 14th July.

Over the last 15 years, around 5,500 riders have raised approximately £800,000 for the Hospice.

Joint research by British Cycling and Sky TV indicates an increase of cyclists in all sectors of society. The survey also shows a resurgence in ‘family and friends’ cycling together for fun.

There has been a revival in people of all ages taking up cycling again. The greatest increase has been in lapsed cyclists who are now riding further and more often.

Wigan & Leigh Hospice are inviting you to ‘get on your bike’ to support them. The Hospice cares for over 1,000 patients and their families every year and raising nearly £5,000 every day is a major challenge.

Mayoral visit to Mossy Lea School Pupils get insight into police

THE Mayor of West Lancashire recently visited Wrightington ON TUESDAY 7th May, 2013, Canon Lea Primary Sharples C of E Primary School and Mossy Nursery, Wigan, had a special visitor in School.

PC Hilton came into school to talk to the Nursery children about his job.

The children used role play, dressed up in uniforms and looked at the equipment police officers use in their jobs. P.C. Hilton also talked to the children about keeping safe and how the police can help us.

Mrs Sullivan, Nursery teacher, said “The children got so much out of the visit and a lot of the children now want to follow in P.C. Hilton’s footsteps and become police officers when they grow up!

“I would also like to say a big thank you to PC Hilton for sparing the time to come into school and visit us!”

During the visit, the Mayor presented the school with their Race Equality Award.

The visit was finished off by some Mossy Lea singing.

A BRAND new children's indoor play and party centre is opening in Wigan!

School takes part in Festival

OVER THE early bank holiday weekend pupils from Mossy Lea Primary School took part in the Wrightington Scarecrow Festival which was organised by The White Lion pub in Wrightington.

All the residents, businesses and schools in Wrightington were encouraged to submit their own scarecrows.

Over the weekend, people could come and buy a map (from the White Lion) to find all the scarecrows and vote for their favourite.

Maps cost £2 and all money raised went to Diabetes UK. The whole school had a fun afternoon making the scarecrows in our new school hall. Spot the Scarecrows!

Britain has over 250 bee species, but numbers have fallen dramatically in recent years, affected by disease, chemicals and habitat loss. What’s the problem?

The Wall Mason Bee is highly dependent on the pollen of the wildflower bird’s-foot trefoil which it needs to feed its young. Its decline is closely linked to the loss of this plant as a result of intensified farming and urban development.

The bee, which loves to nest in broken limestone paving, is holding on in the places like Gait Barrows, Canforth and Hutton, but it needs more help to join up isolated populations. That is where people in the North West can make a difference.

Leading bee expert from the University of Reading, Professor Simon Potts, said: “The way we farm and use land across the UK has pushed many rare bees into serious decline. I’m calling on the government to act swiftly to save these iconic creatures which are essential to a thriving environment and our food supply”.

Sandra Bell, Friends of the Earth Nature Campaigner said: ‘The iconic Wall Mason Bee is in real trouble.

But people in the North West can change all that with simple practical actions and by urging their MPs to

part of a national decline in UK bee populations. The UK has lost 20 species of bee since 1900. A 2012 study showed it would cost farmers £1.8bn a year to replace the pollination service bees provide for free.

What can people in the North West do?

• Plant bee-friendly flowers such as bird’s-foot trefoil • Raise bee-decline with your local MP and ask them to support a Bee Action Plan.

• Ask local authorities to identify and protect local sites important to bees through the planning system.

What can government do?

The Bee Cause is calling for a national Bee Action Plan to protect all bee species. A Bee Action Plan would defend the Wall Mason Bee and other species by helping farmers, gardeners and park keepers to reduce chemicals that harm bees; and ensure our towns and countryside provide bees with enough flowers to feed on and places to nest.

Donate to charity, not to beggars

VISITORS to Wigan town centre are being urged to donate their spare change to registered charities, rather than give to individuals begging on the street.

The money will then be spent on organised and appropriate support for people who might otherwise use money received through begging to fund drug or alcohol addictions.

Wigan Council is working with partners, including Greater Manchester Police, outreach workers and local charities, to reduce street begging and direct people to the support available to them. The Killing with kindness campaign aims to educate the public about the effects of giving money to beggars, as well as putting beggars in touch with organisations that can help them.

Cllr Kevin Anderson, whose portfolio covers town centres and community safety, said: “Members of the public give their money to street beggars in good faith, often presuming that they are homeless. In fact, we know from the organisations that we work with that most people are not homeless and this money is used predominantly to buy drugs and alcohol.

This can lead to an increase in crime and anti-social behaviour.

“There are many organisations, often charities, offering support with addiction or providing accommodation to those in need. They would benefit immensely from people’s donations and we would encourage people to consider making donations to them,.

New stroke information centre

WIGAN stroke group Think Ahead officially opened their new Ashland House premises on May 8th with an open day event for h e a l t h professionals and VIPs from across the Wigan Borough.

The Chair of Wigan C l i n i c a l Commissioning Group Dr Tim Dalton began the day by declaring Think Ahead’s new Stroke information centre open.

Wigan & Leigh students through to building finals

Remove the wilting seed heads from Rhododendrons and Azaleas, so that the plants energy can go to foliage growth and next year’s flowers, rather than seeds.

Work lime in the soil around your Hydrangeas to produce pink flowers or Aluminum Sulphate for blue.

Remove any sucker growths from fruit trees as soon as they appear.

Keep a vigilante eye on the roses. Keep them sprayed for aphids and other pests and diseases such as black spot.

Pines and other conifers can be kept to a compact size by pinching off the new growth 'candles'.

Lilacs should be pruned lightly after they finish blooming, removing sucker growths and dead blooms.

Feed lilacs in May with a good all purpose 10-10-10 fertilizers after they have finished blooming. If your soil has an acidic pH, work a little lime into the soil as well.

PERENNIALS, ANNUALS and BULBS

Dahlias, Gladiolas, tuberous Begonias, Lilies and Cannas and other summer flowering bulbs can be planted this month.

Gladiolas bulbs may be planted at 2-week

thoroughly after transplanting. It is best not to dig or move other spring flowering bulbs until their foliage has ripened and died back.

Pansies, Snapdragons, Dianthus, Petunias, Geraniums, Fuchsias and Impatiens should be ready to plant by mid month.

Toward the end of the month, it should be warm enough to plant out the more tender annuals like Salvia, Zinnias, Marigolds, Lobelia.

Lightly side dress perennials with an allpurpose 5-10-10 or 10-1010 fertilizer. Avoid spilling the fertilizer on the plant, and use care not to damage the shallow roots when you cultivate it into the soil.

Setting the stakes next to your taller flowers early in the season, will help to support the plant against winds as well as making it easier to 'train'.

Promptly remove spent flowers from any plant unless your intent is to harvest the seeds. It consumes the plants energy to produce the seeds, and in many species of plants (especially annuals), removing the dead flowers will promote further blooms.

There were first place finishes in the ‘senior bricklaying category’ for Michael Banks, a third year Bricklaying apprentice and in the ‘new entrant category’ of the plastering for Mark Harrison, a Level One Diploma in Plastering apprentice.

Coming in second in the ‘senior plastering category’ was Billy Simpson, a second year Plastering apprentice.

It was a third place finish for Conna O’Grady in the ‘new event category’ for Plastering.

Conna is a first year Bricklaying apprentice.

The regional heat, which took place at Hugh Baird College in Merseyside on May 2, was one of 15 regional heats taking place around the UK, with the final taking place later this year.

SkillBuild is an annual event which is managed

by CITB, the Sector Skills Council and

Industry Training Board for the construction industry, and supported by local employers as well as national sponsors.

Yvonne Barber, Divisional Manager for Construction Crafts, said: “Skillbuild is an excellent opportunity to showcase the talents of our Construction students.

Our learners benefit from the competition in that they are able to demonstrate the high level skills that they have developed at College and at work.

“I am very proud of the learners and the staff that have taught them to compete in very competitive marketplace.

They are a credit to the department.”

Susan adds: "The campaign is going really well and it’s already popular but we now want to add to this by making sure our reminiscence sessions are just as successful."

A PIONEERING project that has provided hundreds of children and young people in Wigan Borough with after school activities is the best there is in the North West...and that’s official!

Nowt2Do?, which is supported by Wigan and Leigh Housing (WALH), has been named as the winner of the Excellence In Youth Involvement award for the North of England in this year’s prestigious Tenant Participation Advisory Service (TPAS) awards.

The awards are open to all social housing providers and aim to highlight those individuals and organisations that ‘go the extra mile and show what can be achieved when people are truly involved’.

Nowt2Do? is the brainchild of Wigan school-based police officer PC Andy Wright who had the idea to use his school’s (Fred Longworth High) facilities to provide young people with activities and clubs during the evenings, weekends and school holidays.

Church attendance rises in North West

The Church of England today released its annual statistics for 2011, including figures for Blackburn Diocese, revealing a strong and growing trend for Christmas attendance, an increase in baptisms and stability in weekly service attendance.

Blackburn Diocese, the Church of England in Lancashire, is a key part of this growth story, showing the third highest Diocesan rise in average Sunday attendance across the UK, with an increase of 4.4%.

Meanwhile total average weekly attendances (for services held across the whole week including Sunday) are also showing signs of growth in Blackburn Diocese, with a slight increase of 1%.

Nationally, Christmas 2011 drew 14.5% more worshippers to Church of England services than attended in 2010, reaching a total of 2,618,030. In Blackburn Diocese the total numbers of worshippers was up 10%, from 40,120 in 2010 to 44,100 in 2011.

Whilst one of the factors for such a high annual increase includes the poor weather in 2010, early returns from 2012 reveal a further increase in Christmas attendance on

these high 2011 figures suggesting a potential growing trend for churchgoing at Christmas.

On Easter Day in 2011 the figures for all age attendance were down 1.6% nationally, but were down by 1% in Blackburn Diocese from 33,800 to 33,400.

Almost half of the Church of England’s regional areas have seen growth in Church attendance, with 20 out of 44 dioceses, including Blackburn, showing increases in attendance.

Nationally there was a 1.2% increase in children and young people attending to 216,928. While the equivalent total weekly figure in Blackburn

Diocese is 2% down, it doesn’t tell the complete story, because Sunday attendances by young people are up 7% Also released today and available on the Church of England website are other figures for church life and activity.

The total number of baptisms has increased by 4.3% nationally and by 7% in Blackburn Diocese. This means that the Church of England as a whole conducted an average of over 2,600 baptisms each week during 2011.

Weddings saw a slight decrease of 3.6% in 2011, to 51,880. In Blackburn Diocese the numbers of weddings fell by 8%, from 1040 to 960.

The aim was to provide every child from aged 11, the opportunity to take part in as many safe, meaningful and different activities as possible. To that end, all activities are provided free of charge and in a variety of locations.

It began in 2009 as a 10-week pilot but four years later many hundreds of children and young people continue to enjoy a diverse programme of activities that encompasses everything from Dance to Bricklaying. Since its start young people have attended the project’s various and varied activities on more than 25,000 occasions.

WALH and Nowt2Do? faced stiff competition from housing organisations across the North of England in the regional competition. The partners were crowned the winners at a presentation event at Manchester’s Palace Hotel. As well as being hailed as the best in the North, the project will now go on to the national finals which will be held at The Concorde, Manchester Airport on Thursday July 11.

Speaking about the triumph, PC Wright said: “Engaging the young tenants of today and the future tenants of tomorrow is a priority for everyone involved in the Nowt2Do? Project.

relief of A49 road at Marus Bridge

WIGAN & LEIGH College has invested £55,000 on a new state of the art facility to enable students to get hands on experience of specialist renewable energy equipment.

The new Sustainable Technologies and Renewables Centre (STaR) forms part of the College’s £1.4million engineering facility at the Pagefield Centre, Walkden Avenue.

The STaR Centre houses specialist equipment such as, ground and air source heat pumps, solar thermal and photovoltaic panels and a small wind turbine on the roof, which students will operate, and maintain as part of their courses.

As well as providing teaching facilities, the Centre supplies rainwater harvesting for the toilets, the solar thermal panels provide hot water for the kitchen, and so far 41,000kW of electricity has been generated by the solar pv’s.

Oil from the catering department is also being turned into biodiesel thanks to a special biodiesel filtration rig, which will be used by students working on college motor vehicle programs.

John Holland, lecturer and programme manager for Electrical and Electronic Engineering, said: “In the next decade, the National Grid will see 80 percent of their current workforce retire, and it is vital that the next generation of engineers have the sound

grounding in renewable technologies this Centre offers.

“The STaR Centre provides our students with access to the latest technology, enabling them to be in a prime position when seeking employment, while also providing up skilling opportunities for existing engineers and technicians.”

Also launched alongside the Centre is Green Deal Wigan & Leigh LTD. This is the company tasked with delivering the government’s Green Deal and ECO (Energy Companies Obligation) initiatives across the borough. This ensures that local trades get access to the right funding and the work generated by that money.

Greendeal Wigan boosts environment friendly business

E N V I R O N M E N TA L LYfriendly businesses have received a boost in Wigan with the launch of a new company, Green Deal Wigan & Leigh Ltd, and the opening of Wigan & Leigh College’s Sustainable Technologies and Renewable Centre (STAR) on the same day.

Green Deal Wigan & Leigh is the local delivery team for the

Government’s Green Deal and Energy Companies Obligation (ECO). The company will be tasked with delivering the Government’s initiatives across the borough to ensure that local trades get access to available funding, and the huge amount of work that will be generated.

AN AMBITIOUS plan to relieve congestion and aid traffic flows on one of the busiest road corridors in the Borough have been welcomed by ward councillors.

A £1.1million bid to the Dept for Transport, if approved, will see the Marus Bridge Roundabout removed and a traffic light management system put in its place with dedicated lanes to assist traffic flows.

If successful, work could commence on design and consultation as soon as this summer. A decision is expected by the end of March.

Both Poolstock Lane and Highfield Grange Ave suffer from congestion at peak periods with tailbacks often stretching for hundreds of metres and along the A49 traffic is backed up to the M6 junction and ward councillors believe that the option identified by council highway chiefs will assist in keeping traffic moving as well as improving access to and from arterial routes into Hawkley Hall and Winstanley.

Winstanley’s Cllr Clive Morgan, pictured above with fellow councillor Lynne Holland, said: “We have seen a number of new houses built in Winstanley in recent years and this has brought more

cars onto the local road network creating tailbacks along Highfield Grange Ave and rat runs through the local estate. The current roundabout restricts traffic flow and is no longer fit for purpose.

“I would also like to see the right turn from the A49 into Clapgate Lane reintroduced and I will continue to lobby for this.

“We now need the Dept for Transport to give the green light!”

Worsley Mesnes Cllr Lynne Holland said: “Poolstock Lane is at breaking point and along with plans for the bypass as part of the Westwood development this proposal will bring relief to long suffering residents.”

The current roundabout has a number of features that would be retained as part of the re-design and located close to the existing roundabout. Cllr Holland has welcomed the retention of these features as part of a wider landscaping package of works.

Cllr Holland added: “It is important that we maintain the features of the current roundabout and I am pleased that plans I have seen will retain these features albeit in a different setting as part of landscaping works.”

ON FRIDAY 10th May Wood Fold Primary School in Standish joined in with Wigan Council’s ‘Paint the town blue’ campaign to send Wigan Athletic on their way to

Wembley.

The children all dressed in either a Wigan Athletic kit or blue and white, whilst donating money to Joseph’s Goal.

Avid Latics supporter Mrs Wilcock said ‘It was

lovely to see the children supporting this fantastic occasion for Wigan whilst raising over £300 for Joseph’s Goal.’

More silverwear for Wigan’s young guns

WIGAN RUGBY Union U15s finished their season in style, by lifting the Blacksticks Lancashire Plate with a magnificent win against much fancied Liverpool Collegiate.

The under 15s followed the example of the club’s Junior Colts side, who won the Raging Bull Shield final.

This season has proved to be a really successful one for the Under 15 squad, with 23 players

competing for places, and three players gaining representative honours with Lancashire.

Only two games have been lost during the 2012-2013vseason, and a fantastic cup win leaves the squad in great spirit and confident for more success next season when the club celebrates its Centenary.

The season finished with a tour to Yorkshire where again we triumphed in both matches

played.

Any new players (year 11 from September) are always welcome.

We train Mondays and Wednesdays throughout the season.

IT’S BEEN a real roller coaster for the Latics this last few weeks: a fantastic FA Cup Final victory followed by the sadness of relegation from the Premier League after eight magnificent seasons.

But sport in Wigan is all about people: and the celebrations and disappointments are shared by the whole community, hence

the picture - it shows Wigan Councillors Chris Ready, his daughter Kelly Ready and Damian Edwardson enjoying Wigan's magnificent FA cup success at Wembley on May 11th.

What a party - no matter who you were, if you were a Wiganer it was pure elation.

Warriors march on as Shaun builds a dynasty

I REMEMBER watching the great Wigan sides of the late 80s and early 90s going about their business, sat there open-mouthed at game after game in the South Stand of the old Central Park....

Shall I reel off the names?.....why not.....

Shaun Edwards, Ellery Hanley, Andy Platt, Joe Lydon, Dean Bell, Andy Farrell, Shaun Wane, Kevin Iro, Frano Botica, Bond, B-J, David Myers, Chariots, Andy Platt, Dennis Betts, Phil Clarke, Gary Connolly, Graeme West, Ian Lucas, Kelvin Skerrett, Mick Cassidy, Andy Goodway, Steve Hampson, Derm, Greg, Twiggy, There were so many memories one that sticks out is the Challenge Cup game against Bradford played at the old Burnden Park in 1992. Wigan were 36-0 up at the break.

A bloke sat in front of me turned round at half time and said: “Excuse me mate, what game are they playing here...?” I thought he was taking the proverbial, but I answered all the same: “Rugby League mate....” He said: “Thanks - it’s just that I’m from Whitehaven and I’ve never seen anything like this before....”

I remember an evening, Tuesday 9th April 1991, when 30,000 packed the old ground to watch a titanic performance by Wigan against Widnes as they went in pursuit of The Impossible Dream.

Eight games in that month, including the inevitable Cup Final victory against poor old Saints....

A personal view

MAKING HIS MARK - Wigan coach Shaun Wane is creating a new dynasty at Wigan with star players like Sam Tomkins (below).

OK, OK, enough - your point is??

Well, I reckon that the team that has been so effectively crafted by Shaun and his coaching colleagues is well on the way to creating their own legend.

We have a deadly strike force in Sam Tomkins ( the best player of his generation) Josh Charnley and

Pat Richards.

We have a diehard winning mentality under the new coach, just like that engendered by John Monie.

There is a growing belief among the tribal Wigan faithful...

And the team is now turning it on, week after week, game after game. The performances are electrifying, all the better compared to those distant days because of the progress that the other clubs in the Prem have made in recent years.

Who will stop this squad from sweeping the board? Cup, minor and major premiership?

The only real contenders are Huddersfield. Leeds are going through a dark tunnel at the moment - they could recover and the game at Man City will have told us a lot about where the Rhinos really are. Huddersfield have blossomed in a totally unexpected way this season under Paul Anderson, but do they have the resolve, the backbone and the experience that rubs through Wigan sides time and again?

By the time we get to the beginning of July, we will have six home league games left, just two away (plus of course the Challenge Cup quarter and semi finals...)

But just relax and enjoy the ride. It’s 2013, not 1990, and a new squad of young turks are fulfilling the destiny of the Cherry and Whites. Me? - I’ll be sat in the East Stand openmouthed again, building another set of great memories...

Orrell bow out with ‘encouraging form’

IN THEIR final game of a disappointing season, Orrell showed some encouraging form before going down 13-24 at home to Tyldesley.

A break by John Presho taken on by Max Huxley and Mick Caldwell almost brought an early score only for the back

rower to held up of the visitors line.

However it was Tyldesley who opened the scoring running back a loose kick out of defence for a converted try with a penalty affording a 0-10 lead.

Orrell came into the game just before the break with a try from Presho the centre beating the defence from acting scrum half after the pack had driven close to the Tyldesley line.

Although Orrell started the second half well it was again

Mick Wilson pulled a penalty back for the home side before Tyldesley hit back with a converted try.

Orrell continued battle and from a late attack down the left they were once more held up over but from the five metre scrum Chris Gregory got over for his first try of the season.

Lancashire Golf Seniors stroll into finals

LANCASHIRE completely dominated the Northern Counties Seniors' Qualifier at a wet and breezy Ilkley in Yorkshire to reach the English Finals for a third successive year.

Wigan RUFC reflects on 2012-2013 season IT’S BEEN a season of mixed fortune for the senior sides at Douglas Valley.

Wigan’s 1st team finished 6th in South Lancs and Cheshire division 1, the 2nd team finished 6th in Raging Bull division 2 north, and the 3rds finished 5th in Raging Bull division 4 north.

Although none of the senior sides mounted a serious promotion push, there were some significant performances and some great rugby played, and with changes taking place on the coaching front, the club is now gearing tself up for a good showing in the Centenary Season 2013-2014, which starts with a grand Centenary

This week a question for you all …

IS THERE a certain kind of Wigan fan who feels that he isn’t actually watching Wigan RL unless the team is chocka with overseas stars who’ve come to the club amid a blaze of publicity and have signed on for megabucks?

I ask this question in all sincerity, because having recently perused a number of online Wigan Warriors fan forums, I’m bemused by the attitude of a small but significant number of supporters.

Okay, I know that those who tend to post online and get into arguments about everything and anything, are a typical vociferous minority and usually hold extremist views, but it seems that the pessimism in some quarters that greeted the appointment of Shaun Wane as head coach – unbelievably to me – is continuing. In fact, there is almost an air of doom and gloom among some, who are quite convinced, without any evidence whatsoever, that Wigan are trying to sell “the few stars they have left” and that local lad Shaun cannot be the long-term answer to Wigan’s problems “because he hasn’t won anything yet”.

That latter comment was made without any hint of irony, or, if we’re bluntly honest, even a vague attempt to represent the real situation. Shaun Wane has already won the League Leader’s Shield (for what it’s worth, which, given that it’s the toughest trophy to win in the modern game, should be a lot more), but he’s only been in the job a year and a half, and 2013 hardly counts as we haven’t even reached the cup finals stages yet, and Wigan are still in with a shout for both of them.

When other fans have bravely tried to respond that, under Shaun Wane, Wigan have been playing some fantastic rugby, and thus far this season are comfortably and deservedly at the top of the league (bear in mind this article is being penned before the Magic Weekend in Manchester), there is a near-scornful

Wigan Warriors from the Inside Out...

PAUL FINCH wonders why there are so many doubters...

response as if such inconvenient facts are totally irrelevant. Some embittered wags have even suggested that this has only happened “because the rest of the league is rubbish”.

Talk about churlish.

My counter-argument would be that Wigan RLFC are currently in as good a place as I’ve ever seen them, and I’ve been watching since the late 1960s. Their backroom team is the best I’ve ever known. Commercially and in terms of their publicity and marketing machines, they are streets ahead of everyone else, while the coaching set-up at almost every level in the club is second to none. On the pitch, they are creaming most opponents and giving their close rivals a very good run for their money – at the time of this writing Wigan are a staggering 248 match points above their nearest chasers – and yet the Wigan first team squad is largely composed of home-grown players and previous ‘unknowns’, the sum total of whom falls well within the salary cap.

Nobody can accuse the current Wigan administration of “buying success”, which was the charge made by jealous rivals during the 1980s.

All that said, I won’t deny that, on the whole, I’ve been worried about the state of the British game overall for a little while now. There isn’t enough talent, either at coaching or playing level, and what little there is is spread too thinly to create a sufficiently competitive league. In my opinion, there are two or three clubs who, frankly, have contributed nothing to Super League for several years now, so I’m quite pleased to see the proposed restructuring of the British game, which may ultimately turn our top tier into a leaner, meaner machine.

The new big problem of course is the lure of the NRL and Rugby Union (though why the latter would attract any Super League player with serious athletic ambitions is beyond me). But only a rational response to this threat will suffice.

Abolishing the salary cap or raising it willy-nilly would be no good. Unless the game can attract much improved sponsorship or TV deals, only two or three clubs would be willing or able to spend a lot more than they currently do. We’d finish up with the same situation we have now: a small elite league within the overall league, with our star players and their agents taking advantage of the increased availability of cash to ask for even more money, as is being seen in Australia.

On the subject of the NRL, and according to newspapers down under, Wigan have now accepted that Super League’s current hottest star, Sam Tomkins, will soon be heading to the Southern Hemisphere, but have priced his contract buy-out at $200,000 a season. On top of that, they will allegedly be seeking a first option on Sam, should he ever wish to return to Super League.

If all this is true, it’s a bitter pill to swallow for the average Wigan fan – a resigned acceptance that star players no longer want to see out their entire careers in Cherry and White – but it also seems to me like a sensible way to respond to the menace the NRL are posing to the British game at present: allowing these lads to leave, but getting every penny they are worth in return (and maybe even a player or two), and ensuring that should they decide to come home again, and a good number of them will, ‘home’ is Wigan, not somewhere else in the British game.

An alternative viewpoint of course, would be for us just to sit there in a state of OTT despondency, decrying everything the club does these days and dreaming hopelessly about the return of the 1980s.

That would solve everything, wouldn’t it?

IT’S A STORY that even the most e x p e r i e n c e d H o l l y w o o d scriptwriter would raise their eyebrows at.

Dave Whelan, a promising young English footballer, breaks his leg playing in the 1960 FA Cup Final for Blackburn Rovers. It effectively ends his career, but undeterred, he uses his compensation money to fund a market stall.

Fast-forward to 1995 and Whelan has built up a multi-million pound retail empire. After narrowly missing out on buying Manchester United, he decides to put in a bid for his hometown team, Wigan Athletic. The Latics are languishing in Division Three and mired in debt. Whelan’s bid is accepted and he boldly declares that within ten years, the club will be playing Premiership football.

The ambitious businessman is ridiculed in the national press for his comments; how could a small-town team like Wigan possibly reach the holy grail of English football?

Ten years later, in 2005, Whelan has the last laugh.

Sam Oliver reflects on the most eventful

season in Wigan Athletic’s history

Wigan were promoted to the Premiership, and eight glorious years of playing in the best league in the world had begun.

However, reaching the FA Cup final was still beyond the dreams of many Latics fans. But on Saturday 13th April 2013, we rewrote history by beating Millwall in the Semis. We also secured a spot in next season’s Europa League.

I have to admit, I didn’t think we stood a chance against the 2011 winners Manchester City.

Roberto Martinez thought otherwise. From the 1st minute to the 92nd, we remained calm and stood our ground.

The sending off of Pablo Zabaleta changed the game though. Suddenly we were on top, but a goal was desperately needed to avoid extra time.

Cue the forgotten man and Prince Harry lookalike Ben Watson, who had been out for most of the season with a broken leg (sound familiar?). He firmly planted his head on the end of Shaun Maloney’s superb corner, sending the ball whistling past City ‘keeper Joe Hart.

There was a moment of stunned disbelief inside Wembley.

And then pandemonium.

The noise inside that stadium is something I will never forget. We had done it! Wigan Athletic, FA Cup winners 2013. Noone deserved it more than Whelan and Martinez, the odd couple; the softlyspoken Spanish manager and the brash Lancastrian chairman.

It was a victory for the club, but also for football in general. It showed that despite how many millions you have in the bank, passion and tenacity will always prevail.

Despite our cup success, it’s still disappointing that we haven’t managed to stay in the Premiership.

We could have saved ourselves in the match against Arsenal, but the Champions League contenders were simply the better team. The season was rounded off with a 2-2 draw against Aston Villa.

Pundits say the league table doesn’t lie, but if we had Ramis, Alcaraz and Figueroa fit for the full season, you get the feeling that we wouldn’t have been fighting relegation.

On the positive side, we have local derbies against Bolton, Blackburn and Blackpool to look forward to next season, as well as European football and the Community Shield. If we keep hold of the majority of our players, we should bounce back up next season.

Our biggest summer signing will be to keep hold of Martinez; that really would be a good way to start life in the Championship.
